De Waag in Wijk 01

The atmosphere and service at De Waag are truly excellent. The drinks and mocktails are also excellent. However, the food is somewhat inconsistent. The spareribs are always delicious, but the fish I tried, for example, was far too dry. What I find particularly disappointing is that there aren't many special vegetarian options on the menu. I paid €25 for a plate of vegetables in tomato sauce, which I found rather steep, especially since it wasn't anything special otherwise. It feels a bit like a place geared primarily towards tourists.

Reservations are recommended. If it's full, space can be tight. Lunch is okay; the mustard soup is delicious, but I've found it less, though certainly better, in other places.

Cozy place, attentive staff, local beer on tap. Highly recommended!

Unique location. Cafe, vaulted restaurant, historic rooms, very unique. Friendly and welcoming service. We enjoyed the Weizen original beer.

A very atmospheric place, the oldest restaurant in the Netherlands. Nice atmosphere. A bit crowded and noisy, but we accepted that.

The oldest beer café in the Netherlands, a beautiful building, great service, and a cozy atmosphere. I just find the decor rather subpar for a historic building. Hence only 4 stars.

We hadn't made a reservation, but they managed to find us a table for 1.5 hours. The restaurant was packed on a Tuesday, and with good reason! The food was divine and arrived quickly. For the two of us, I spent less than €50 on two main courses, a drink, and bread and spread. I'll definitely be back.

Lovely terrace. Beautiful little cafe. The oldest cafe in the Netherlands! The mustard soup was delicious. The local beer is excellent, and the chocolate cake is fantastic.

It's said to be the oldest restaurant in the Netherlands! It's spread over three floors (with an elevator), and the large dining room on the ground floor is particularly beautiful. The food is very good, with a slight deduction because they didn't restock mustard and other sauces despite requests. Definitely worth a visit!

Beautiful terrace with a view. However, today we were treated very rudely. So they won't be seeing us again. We were treated curtly and rudely when we asked where we could pay inside.

De Waag is great for a drink and perhaps a Doesburg mustard soup. Our dinner was a big disappointment. We sent both dishes back. Perfect for people who enjoy deep-fried spareribs.

Nice, beautiful place. Unfortunately, we had to leave feeling disappointed. The pilsner we ordered smelled and tasted of diacetyl. After pointing this out, we were told there was nothing wrong with the beer. So, no beer connoisseurs behind the bar. I simply asked if we'd like a different beer instead. Further on, we're now enjoying a delicious Veltins pilsner, which smells and tastes great.

Running a bar/restaurant in the oldest location in the Netherlands naturally comes with obligations! So, where in the Netherlands does a lunch menu say: Chicken livers braised with Madeira, in cream with onions and mushrooms, along with delicious raw vegetables, perfectly prepared, for €13!!! Fantastic! Friendly service, nothing pushy. That's how it should be!

Beautiful building and pleasant atmosphere. However, drink prices are not listed anywhere. Not on the drinks menu and not even online. So the bill is a surprise. According to the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) and rijksoverheid.nl, they say you must always display the price. So they're breaking the law here. Something the staff themselves are unaware of. The Waag's comment that prices were listed on the menu is peculiar. The drinks menu I received from the staff didn't have them. I confronted the staff about this, and they said it was perfectly acceptable. It's a shame I didn't take a photo of the menu for proof. It's a shame you made the comment below and didn't just act on it.

We had a wonderful time, enjoyed several beers, and had a delicious lunch! Highly recommended!

It's simply beautiful there, with such lovely staff, friendly and uncomplicated. You can even order fries with your soup, no problem at all. The soup tastes fantastic, we're glad we tried it. And German beer to go with it, what more could you want? The interior is absolutely quaint, and there's plenty of space. We'd love to come back ;-)

They were so hospitable. There was practically no room. They were so helpful, and we were still able to enjoy a delicious main course.

Pleasant evening, only a pity that Doesburg is so deserted. On Saturday there were only a few people at the weigh house.

I expected more. I ordered two different lunch dishes, both of which felt a bit plain.

We were cycling through/in Doesburg, and to cool off, we had to stop for a cold weitzen on the terrace at the oldest restaurant in the Netherlands. 😋 We didn't have time to stay longer and eat anything, but the service was very friendly and fast, even though it was almost full. 👍👍

De Waag is a must see in Doesburg. For a beer or parties in various large in very atmospheric rooms/vaulted cellar. Owner and staff very friendly.

Stop for lunch. Nice and busy on the tram where you can order yourself but where they are also happy to help you take your order.

The oldest café in Holland. Great staff, delicious food. 🙋‍♂️ We went there again in June 2025. The staff is still friendly, attentive, and generally in a good mood. The food and drinks are still as good as ever.

What a great atmosphere and service. The staff is correct and friendly. They think along with you. The drinks are just chilled and the food, in whatever form, is excellent.

Unique location being the oldest still existing bar/restaurant in the Netherlands. Nice atmosphere in the medieval building. The food (lunch) was very good and the service was very friendly. Can get busy so make reservations if you don't want to be disappointed. Prices a bit above average, but not 'crazy'.

Very nice café restaurant with a historical story and you can feel that. Very atmospheric and cozy place. It was busy, but we were still helped cheerfully and friendly. The food was delicious, nice menu and many tasty beers on tap. Outside on the terrace you have a beautiful view of the historical center, inside you can enjoy the history of the building. If you are in Doesburg, this is a super nice place for a bite and/or drink!

Cozy and attractive restaurant. We didn't make a reservation and it was pleasantly busy! We came in and received a very friendly welcome and managed to find a seat for us. We had a nice meal. Despite the crowds, the service went smoothly. It was just admirable to see how they had everything under control. You immediately feel at home. My compliments!
