What a relaxing place this is. Delicious food, great service, and the restaurant's decor is spot on, in my opinion. Highly recommended.

The food was delicious, with one important tip for giving it four stars: both the fries and vegetables could definitely be a bit more generous. Half a container of fries per person isn't much. A good option would be to offer extras to prevent waste, without adding them to the bill.

De Wheem, a charming Grand Café in Meppel, offers a pleasant outdoor seating area. The staff is quick to ask what you'd like to eat. Under large parasols, you'll find shelter from the elements.

We love coming here. Just popped in for a drink. Anouk and two of her children were happily tagging along. It's all so welcoming here. Just how a Sunday afternoon should be. Thanks again, and see you soon!

Only had beer, tasted delicious and smooth, nice service

This was some of the worst food I have had in a long time. The pasta tasted like jarred sauce. The Cesar salad was soggy because they added hot chicken to it and it sat too long before being brought out. The chicken was thighs with the fat and skin still on it. The liver was undercooked and had an ineditible texture. The burger had a strange smokey taste with very sweet BBQ sauce. The catch of the day was the only editable dish. We waited an extra 40 minutes to get a cheesecake. It took 2 and a half hours to eat. Didn't even get a dinner menus until all our drinks were ordered and served, and we had to ask for them.

The chicken was dumped on the salad while hot, so the lettuce was mostly wilted and cooked. This place wins my reward for the worst salad I have ever ordered. I ate only about 5 bites, but it was so truly vile that I just left everything on the plate. The waitress took the full plate away and didn't even ask if it was good. Pretty crazy for a 20€ salad! I would also say that out of our group of 7 people, only 3 actually enjoyed and finished their food. Only one person felt like it was worth complaining but the waitress just sorta shrugged. The service was also exceptionally bad, with one member of our group ordering a cold desert that took over 45 minutes to be delivered. When considering the extremely high price of the food and drinks for a small city like Meppel, this place is definitely one to avoid wasting money on. A dining experience that kinda put a damper on the whole evening until we went somewhere else.

Cozy restaurant, where you can also enjoy a drink with a wide choice of snacks

Ate here on a standard Thursday evening. We reported upon arrival and indicated that we had a reservation. The girl who helped us said ‘what?’. Okay, a bit of a strange reaction, but okay then we repeat it. She looked as if she saw water burning. Then we asked whether we could sit inside or outside. Then it started to dawn on us that we had a reservation and wanted to eat. It was giving the lights are on, but nobody’s at home. Well, we were finally able to sit down. It took a while before we were asked if we wanted something to drink. No menu was given. Then the drinks were brought and we asked for a menu. She said she would pass it on to a colleague. Fine, that took a while too. Eventually someone walked to a table and asked if they had asked for a menu. This was not the case. A case of no communication/miscommunication between staff? Instead of looking further into whether customers needed a menu, the menu was put back. Finally I walked to the bar myself to get the menus….. Well, after a long wait, you would think that patience would be rewarded. But nothing could be further from the truth. The main courses differ in quality. The food of my company was fine. My steak was crematorium level, while they asked for a medium well.

One of the best meals that we had on our tour of Europe! Excellent service and amazing dessert! House made carpaccio is absolutely to die for. We were able to get in the same day but might recommend reservations (anywhere in Meppel)

We haven't tried such a tender steak for 10 years. Respect to the chef. The waiters are polite and efficient. If it were possible, we would give 6 stars. Wonderful

The chef's special menu was very little fish, half a small bass fillet, for a much too high price. 32.50 further there was very little fries for two people. For an order on the terrace the plates must be hot because the dish cools down too quickly otherwise

Dogs were welcome. Nice when you are on holiday. No water offered. You have a nice view, during lunch it was busy... it took a bit longer then. But it was nice and sunny so no problem. The salami omelette and the crispy Tuna melt sandwich were delicious. I really recommend the sandwich! Super tasty.

Came here with my family a while back for a Birthday dinner and found our experience to be quite nice. We reserved a table for 7people about a week prior, requested a high chair and everything was handled efficiently. As a family we ordered the following, (excluding drinks): 2x bavette 2x catch of the day (1gf) (salmon) 1x duo duck 1x chefs special (entrecote) Kids: tomato soup, poffertjes 1x Proeverij for 4persons Several sides, including: fries, salad And for dessert to share: 1x Cheesecake 1x Dame blanche The food was beautifully plated, had plenty of flavour and everything had the right temperature upon being served. What surprised me was the quality of the meats they serve. I don't get my hopes up when it comes to Dutch restaurants in regards to properly cooked steaks and premium cuts, yet De Wheem truly surprised us. All the food we ordered, even the side dishes were truly lovely, even for international standards. We did however experience a slack in drink service. We ordered several rounds of drinks over our entire seating and 3/6 rounds didn't arrive, or we had to ask the waiter when it would arrive. When we finished our mains and ordered our dessert we also placed a tea and coffee order. After 25min of wait we asked the waiter again if it was coming and they apologized that the bar "forgot it again". At that point we requested those drinks to be taken off our bill and that we'd like to pay. The restaurant itself has a nice ambience, looks beautiful and has plenty of tables available. The bathrooms looked clean and fully stocked. Staff wears outfits that equalize both male as female and it looked pretty sharp for the overall aesthetic. Last but not least: a special shout-out for a restaurant that not only serves good meats, but also has their knives BEAUTIFULLY sharpened! Capital letters: "beautifully". We enjoyed our visit and would definitely recommend this place to others. They do however have room for improvement in regards to their bar service.

Was a bit late, and then I saw that the kitchen of this restaurant was open until 21:00. So I gave it a try and was not disappointed. Ordered the chef special which was a nice steak with vegetables and crispy French fries.

Above all the nicest restaurant in downtown Meppel. Courteous staff, good menu and a nice setting. If I take you out in Meppel we are eating at this place. (Edit: went three more times: always fantastic. Thanks for taking care of the dog every time, thanks to all the staff.

Good food. Not much to complain about price/quality, service and location. If you have a point of criticism, there was a sad piece of greenery on the plate for presentation that has nothing to do with the dish itself. The grilled vegetables, on the other hand, were well prepared and tasty. Use the vegetables creatively for decoration instead of adding a random bit of color that doesn't add anything to the taste experience.

Delicious food! We ended up here without a reservation and how nice that they still had a spot! We had a delicious main course of the big green egg. The bavette and the round steak. It was delicious, well cooked and nice and tender! For dessert we had the twix twice, yummy, highly recommended! The service was also very friendly! I'll definitely be back!

Had a delicious meal last Wednesday with colleagues and our agent from Italy, the food was great! the spacious layout of the restaurant is very pleasant and the ladies serving were very hospitable and came across as professional, which really benefits the business! thanks for the good care.

Gisteravond heb ik bij Grand Café De Wheem een hamburger gegeten. De burger zelf was van uitstekende kwaliteit: sappig, goed op smaak en duidelijk met zorg bereid. Echt een genot om te eten! Wat echter tegenviel, was het broodje waarop de hamburger werd geserveerd. Het voelde aan als een goedkoop kadetje, wat niet past bij de kwaliteit die je normaal gesproken van De Wheem mag verwachten. Dit deed helaas afbreuk aan de beleving van een verder heerlijke burger. Al met al een gemengde ervaring: het vlees was top, maar het broodje kan echt beter. Hopelijk wordt hier in de toekomst aandacht aan besteed, want met een passend broodje zou deze burger absoluut perfect zijn.

Nice tent, cozy and excellent food. It's just a pity that if you make a reservation, there will be a sign on your table upon arrival that says 'reserved from 12 noon to 2 p.m.' After that, this spot is reserved for someone else. It's not a wok restaurant, is it? A bit strange. So after a good lunch you can't just have a nice cup of tea, coffee or a drink. You can, but you have to drink and chat quickly. The tent was quite full, so you can also say no if there is no room left. Quality before quantity.

Gisteren met 4 personen heerlijk gedineerd bij Grandcafe de Wheem. Prachtige etablissement met zeer vriendelijk personeel en een fijne sfeer. Het nodigt uit om ook na het diner nog even te blijven hangen en wat te drinken. Echt een avondje uit.

Heerlijk 🐠 vis gegeten..ondanks dat het behoorlijk druk was..hebben we niet lang hoeven wachten! Gewoon heeeeeeel 👍

het eten was zeer goed. groente echt minimaal, ondanks verzoek om extra groenten. Het is niet acceptabel dat de patat pas later na 10 minuten kwam toen we al aan het eten waren. Wat echt niet kan, en vaker daar gebeurt, is 1,5 uur wachten op het voorgerecht. De bediening was goed.

Weer prima gegeten en gedronken! Wat mij opvalt geen snitzel of varkenshaas als je gezelschappen krijgt is het ook lekker als er niet alleen verschillende soorten biefstuk op de kaart staat! Positief bedoelt maar niet iedereen vind biefstuk lekker brede kaart houden. Prima avond gehad trouwens complimenten 😀👏

The food is simply good, good atmosphere and friendly and efficient service. We always come back here. Make sure you make a reservation for lunch because it is always busy!

First of all, it's been a while since I had a rib-eye steak that was this good! I enjoyed it a lot! 😋 Secondly, the service was on point! We were supposed to come with more people which changed last minute but it was no worries at all. And we originally would've had the full meal bundle for everyone but it was possible to switch to à la carte which was very welcome for the people who can't eat a 3 course meal! Thirdly, the restaurant itself was quite beautiful. Nice lighting, not to bright or to dark and the the tables were nicely spaced so I couldn't hear other people speaking at their tables. I've been to restaurants where this wasn't the case. Lastly, Google Maps limits me to giving 5 stars but I would've given more stars if it was possible.

What a Grand Café. The welcome was friendly. Beautiful appearance of the interior. Spacious layout of the tables. The lunch menu was well presented and extensive. Each dish stated which ingredients it contained, for allergies. Service was very friendly. The drinks were on the table in no time. The lunch dishes were really perfect. The garpaccio (or bread) sandwich and the goat cheese sandwich were great. See photos. Compliments. Keep it up. We will definitely come back

Top tent. Very atmospheric, delicious food. Portion size could have been a little larger. But that was the only disadvantage. Friendly staff too!

Great restaurant. The food is good, but not exceptional. It is a large restaurant, which makes it feel less cozy, but it is attractively decorated. Service is alert, but not pushy.

Had to wait a long time for the starter.. then had to wait even longer for the main course.. and the receipt for the dessert was lost so we ended up waiting an hour for that too. In the meantime, they could have made more money from us by asking for another drink... this didn't happen... a shame because that's what they need. The food was delicious! And worth the wait! The atmosphere and staff are also great!

Yesterday we ate at this restaurant with two friends for a birthday. As a starter we had a sharing board for three people. The board was well stocked with delicious snacks (carpaccio, salmon, croquettes, shrimps, etc.) There were two croquettes on the board, so it was a bit of a fight, but as grown men we were of course able to solve this (rock, paper, scissors). As a main course I had a Ribeye with pepper sauce. Can only say it's the best ribeye I've ever had! Super tasty and served with tasty fries and some vegetables on the side. Fries came a little later than the main course and I thought the vegetable portions were a bit meager, but that certainly didn't spoil the fun. For dessert we had a cheesecake served with mint ice cream. I'm not really a dessert expert, but the dessert was delicious. All in all we had a very nice and tasty evening. I can recommend this restaurant to everyone. Despite a few minor points, I definitely dare to give this five stars!

I have now sat here on the terrace for the 2nd time in six months. Food is really good. Had a generous snack board for the first time, super tasty. Today again (in the sun) on the terrace. With wonderfully warm cushions in the back! Had a super tasty grilled chicken sandwich. It took a while but it was very tasty and (I think €10.95) so still reasonably priced for a very generous portion of chicken. I'd love to come back. Definitely recommended!

Had lunch with a group of 30 people following a special family gathering. Nice secluded spot in the conservatory at the back of the business. Good choices on the menu and very tasty. Not just any sandwich: beautifully served. Pleasant and smooth service. Compliments.

A beautiful place, but we had to wait so long for our food without being told ... the burger was disappointing and partly cold ... the staff was partly friendly but not warm or attentive ... for the amount of money I have really eaten better and nicer elsewhere then here...not worth repeating for me...a pity because you radiate elsewhere...

Mooie inrichting, uitgebreide kaart en het eten is goed. We waren met een grote groep op zaterdagavond en moesten veel geduld hebben: na anderhalf kwam het hoofdgerecht. 🫤 als het terras vol zit kan de keuken het niet aan.

We spent a very pleasant family evening in this cafe. Very cozy atmosphere both inside and on the summer terrace. Incredibly delicious food and good service. The dishes are very large and filling. Dinner for 3 people with wine cost 56 €. I highly recommend this restaurant.

The attendant was very friendly and even gave us a tip about the chef’s special for the day, which we ended up ordering. It turned out to be the highlight of our day, and we had a wonderful time. For us, the prices were quite reasonable considering what we ordered and the quality of the food.

Gezellig zitten. Redelijk vriendelijke bediening. Prima kaart (aan de prijzige kant) met smaakvolle gerechten. Ze bieden cocktails aan maar weten daar vrij weinig vanaf. Pornstar martini schenken ze zonder prosecco / mousserende witte wijn en aperol glas zat half vol voor serieus bedrag. Wij waren een weekendje weg en voor een keer was dit prima. Zou er niet nog een keer naar toe gaan

Leuke locatie, leuk terras, nette en attente bediening en lekker eten. Voor ieder wat wils, goeie vega opties, lekkere salades. Komen zeker terug!

We enjoy coming here and are always satisfied with the quality of the food and service. This time we ate a large goat cheese salad and surf and turf. The prawns in particular were very tasty and the round steak was wonderfully tender and cooked just right. The fries served with it were also delicious. The service was smooth and attentive. We sat in the conservatory, which is a lovely and quiet place, especially because our dog can lie inconspicuously under the table there and no one will be disturbed. It was very thoughtful that a bowl of water was immediately brought for the dog. We definitely recommend this restaurant, even if you just want to have a drink on the terrace.

We always thought it was a wonderful place and visited often. However, the last 3 times the food has not been good for the price you pay. And the food is deteriorating. Unimaginative and tasteless. Too bad because the place is cozy. Nice on the terrace with a drink, but we don't need food anymore. The charm has now worn off somewhat.

How can you lie? See your response to my review. No one spoke to us and no one said to check where our order was. We were ignored. What is so difficult about non-alcoholic beer and a non-alcoholic cocktail. But speak the truth and don't lie. You'll never see us again. Waiting a long time for our drink. 5 people after us got their drinks much earlier. We also ordered food. We asked the waiter what we wanted to ask, and the answer was: the person from your table will be there shortly. When we told her that we wanted to ask something, she just walked away. Then we got up and left. What a worthless staff. So 1 star is still too much.

Wasn't open yet. At 10.00 a.m. Otherwise it's Top Toppie Especially to start a walk there, cycle or have a picnic.

Een erg leuke plaats om te zitten en het personeel was erg vriendelijken snel! We hebben Kabeljauw en een Bavette steak gegeten. Deze laatse was goed van smaak, maar er zaten echt te veel spieren in. Jammer voor een gerecht van € 33,00. Daarnaast verwachtten wij eigenlijk naast de gebruikelijke patat, ook iets van groente. Dit was er, op een heel klein schijfje mais en een groene peper, niet.

Service good, but strange that you always have to check if there is room... even when there is hardly anyone there. There is plenty of free time during your stay... otherwise okay... nice service.

Ate here yesterday. It was very good. Not much you get besides your meat. Unfortunately, there is little that is possible if, for example, you are on a diet and are not allowed to eat certain things. For example, asked for just some strawberries for dessert. That is not possible because they will not have enough for other desserts. These wishes are possible at other restaurants.

Mooi interieur, zit heel gezellig. Voorgerecht was helaas smakeloos en het duurde veel te lang tot hef hoofdgerecht kwam. Dat was superlekker en maakte veel goed!

When we got to the terrace we were not greeted, waited awkwardly while the waiter stood next to us. Food was expensive for the amount you get. Took a long time before we could order, pay, etc. We were not asked if it was satisfactory. Service was slow and unenthusiastic. Shame! Was well regarded and the menu looked good!
