Experience Christmas Day dinner. There was just something missing with every course. If it wasn't a garnish, the craftsmanship could have been better. Considering the stories, a disappointing experience.

Christmas Eve, we had to wait hours for our food and when it arrived it was lukewarm. Never again Christmas there.

Fantastic restaurant in a perfect location. Panoramic views, fantastic food and fantastic service. Meppel couldn't wish for a more beautiful entrance.

The place it self and the food are okay but the service is way too slow. Not worth the waiting.

We ate here on Boxing Day with a group of 7. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was good. I give the lower stars for service because of 2 somewhat clumsy things about the restaurant. With the first starter, sandwiches were also served, it was said that the butter would be added shortly. It didn't come, so I asked again and it would be arranged. we were told that they were beating the butter in the kitchen. Think the cook is still knocking, no butter came that evening. The main course was served to everyone, the fries were still coming, it was said. The 3 bowls of fries were placed on the table when everyone had already finished the main course. We thought this was very sloppy for a restaurant of this caliber. If you eat somewhere for a much lower amount, something like this can happen. But here it was a blemish on the evening.

Christmas brunch: after a long wait, we first received lukewarm onion soup and then our coffee and tea, of which 1 tea was also lukewarm. We had to ask for sugar and milk which only came when the coffee was cold. We waited an hour for the food. That was very measured with four slices of sausage, four slices of cheese and a few small bowls with some egg. Only the salmon was well proportioned. The rolls were barely cooked and dry. The disappointment was that the restaurant was full and they were busy. All in all, not the Christmas brunch we were looking forward to. We won't be there again. Very unfortunate.

Beautiful location, warm and attractively decorated! Very friendly people and the food was delicious. The only thing we noticed is that the teacups were very small, and there were not many types of tea to choose from. But we enjoyed it and will definitely come back.

Update of the review below; The way in which the owner of the restaurant responded to me deserves respect. Mistakes are not ignored and feedback is appreciated. A pleasant conversation and compensation for the mistake in the price of the bottle of wine makes everything right for me.🙏 Came to this restaurant full of expectations to have a nice evening with 4 people. There was a staff party going on in the back room with loud music. This may have also had an effect on the service because the entire evening was unfortunately very messy. We were referred to a table with three places while there were four of us, so we arranged an extra place ourselves. When asked what we wanted to drink, we asked for a bottle of white wine, it was stupid that we didn't ask for the menu because we got a bottle for 60 euros!! Turned out later. The dishes took a long time to arrive and were lukewarm. And to top it off... a lady started redecorating the dining room with a lot of noise while we were still having dessert. All in all a disappointment this evening.

Enjoyed a delicious lunch menu in a pleasant atmosphere. The menu was surprising, well balanced and delicious. Enjoy delicious food by the water in the summer and this time in the Lime Kiln itself. An attractive space and pleasant service. There are so-called detour wines, this is a detour restaurant.

Great welcome, lady who received our coats. We were allowed to choose between two tables. The service was a bit slow (I saw it was very busy) with ordering drinks, giving menu cards, serving drinks, etc. I also saw (but now I'm nitpicking) that they didn't look around between service, so our signals didn't notice. But every waiter/attendant was very service oriented, polite and friendly. The starter came quickly, tartare laced with (don't remember the name), was delicious. Which was very nice, we wanted the anniversary menu, but that was actually only in November, we were there on December 7. Still, we were allowed to choose that, very good service. Delicious main course, chicken fillet with butter sauce and puff pastry. Dessert also delicious. What struck me was that when we left we had to find our coats ourselves and left the building. I also understand that they cannot escort everyone out. Nice ambiance, in a Christmas atmosphere, not excessive. Just right.

I am very happy that you already have one vegan option on the menu for both starters and main courses, hopefully more plant-based menus will follow, because it was very tasty and also animal-friendly. See you next time, greetings from Hilly Boers

Well... if you want to have a nice lunch in Meppel, Villa Kalkoven is my favorite! Very tasty dishes on the menu, beautifully presented, pleasant service and a lovely place to sit. In short...highly recommended!

Nice location where we actually sat in 1 of the 3 ovens. Friendly service. Tasty main course. Unfortunately, things went wrong with the appetizers. 1 was unreported and out of stock. This was only told when ordering. And I had a steak tartare, which was tasty, but more tartare than steak tartare (much too finely ground). Inquiries revealed that the tartare is purchased sliced/ground and not cut itself. Be prepared yourself. I did not expect this at a restaurant of this caliber/entourage.

We came for the anniversary menu, we had also communicated this when booking. However, the main course was not available.

Had a High tea here a while ago and found our experiences to be average at most. I had reserved a spot a week before for three people, including one dietary restriction and asked them the question on the reservation form if that was possible to accommodate. I waited five days before giving them a call if they actually received the reservation and if they could accommodate for that restriction. The lady mentioned that was possible, yet a customer confirming with the company is not how a business should be ran. Upon arrival there was ample parking opportunity, the building looked beautiful from the outside and the nature that surrounds the actual property makes it quite serene. After making our way in we got seated and noticed the table not having been set properly and fully, which the server apologized for and finished setting after we sat down. It took them after seating us 35min to give us our welcome drink and start the high tea, which is an absurd amount of waiting time. I do have to mention that the alcohol free tea-sparkle was quite palatable and a nice touch! The starter was a pumpkin coconut soup (gluten and dairy free) which lacked flavour, punch and overall depth. After the entre the sweet, savoury pastries and sandwiches came out. Of the sandwich plate there was one with brie, one with salmon and lastly one with a croquette. As for the pastries, every single pastry was extremely sweet to essentially eating pure sugar. What surprised me the most is that they even had a super sugary scone, which as we know should not be sugary. (Depending on the amount of jam/cream you add to that of course). This was the same matter for the carrot cake, muffin, chocolate croissant and cinnamon bun. Essentially every pastry was way too sweet and it spoiled the essence of the food. They also served a separate platter with macarons and vails with a yoghurt substance which was also sweet, yet we found it that be a lot more palatable. For this high tea they have 5 flavours of tea available, yet only three of the five options actually set on the table. Throughout your high tea you can refill and drink as much tea as you like. Our overall experience is that this place is trying to be something they are not (yet). The aesthetics are nice, yet can definitely be improved in terms of safety, construction and experience. And the fact that every pastry was soo sweet, must come from that they purchase their items and don't make it themselves? I feel that 3/5 stars might actually be on the high end of rating this company and our experience, and there is definitely room for improvement!

Had shared dining on Saturday, November 2, with 31 people. The atmosphere was great. Service was friendly but left much to be desired. Food was good, but far too little. Many of our guests have turned on the snack pan at home. Shame!!

But in our opinion there is a mismatch between the wishes of the owners and reality. The service was terrible, the food was too expensive for what you got and the kitchen apparently could only prepare food per dish. We had to wait an hour between starter and main course. It is written that the kitchen only works with local dishes, but if 3 of the 4 starters are oysters then you know it. The atmosphere was great, but with cobwebs on the walls, chipped tiles in the toilets? No, this tent does not deserve more than 2 stars.

What a terrible evening we had here. Too scandalous for words. I don't recommend this to anyone! What was supposed to be a fun evening turned into a nightmare. Terrible service and disgusting food. Stay away from here! It started with the booking. We had made a reservation for 5:00 PM a few days in advance and received a call the next day that our reservation had been canceled because an error had been made in the booking system. We had made a reservation for Villa Bodelake but now we were moved to Villa Kalkoven. In itself an excellent solution because they could offer the same concept for which we had reserved, but it was a further drive for us. Anyway, we had been looking forward to it all week so we agreed. Once we arrived, we had to wait longer because the staff was still eating. That already made a bad impression. The cutlery was dirty, the spider web was hanging on the walls. The atmosphere was grim. We had reserved the promotion for a 6 course dinner for €60 per person. We expected that we could choose something from the menu ourselves, but apparently it was a surprise dinner. (the concept was not clearly stated anywhere) We were very disappointed with the food. I would describe it as cat food! The appetizer for me was one bitterbal which was still fine, not necessarily tasty but it was okay to eat but what we got afterwards was really not tasty. I won't waste too many words on it, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. You hope to have a nice dinner out and then you end up in a nightmare. First of all, we had to drive for an hour to the location. We had made a reservation for 5 o'clock and only received our second dish at 6 o'clock, so it took an awfully long time before we got something again, which is very annoying when you are hungry. The portions were very small. After the third round we honestly admitted that we didn't like it and that we wanted to finish and leave. The atmosphere was no longer fun, we were the only ones in the restaurant. My husband and I only ate the appetizer and still had to pay €60 when we left! Too absurd for words! It is already a luxury for us if we can eat out once a year, and we feel incredibly cheated. I actually cried about it for a while. 60 is a lot of money for us and it was absolutely not worth it. We understand that they charge something for the soft drink, but they charge such an amount for something we haven't even eaten? How can you make that? We feel ripped off and don't recommend it to anyone. We were not even offered a solution. To avoid causing a commotion, we paid and left defeated. Please stay away from here! It's not worth your money.

The three of us came here for our wedding anniversary and to see if this was a suitable location for a party in honor of my mother's 95th birthday. We sat outside on the terrace with a beautiful view, but unfortunately the atmosphere was disturbed by dirty windows in the conservatory, rotten wood on the frames and peeling paint. There were potted plants but they were dead, there was not a plant on the table, nothing, and this round table was too large and without atmosphere. We first ordered prosecco which turned out to be cava. The salad we ordered was more of a side dish instead of a lunch dish, with bread without butter. The fish salad was reasonable, but the burrata did not live up to its name, a few dollops of white puree, a few leaves of lettuce and a few tomatoes. A hollow molar dish, fine but not for lunch. We decided to have a dessert anyway, mango sorbet was very tasty but again a hollow molar dish, fits perfectly in an 8 course menu but not as a dessert. We ordered coffee, but unfortunately it was downright bad, watery and you could easily see through it. All in all, poor price/quality for 120 euros. The girl who served us was very nice, but we will celebrate my mother's party elsewhere.

Made a reservation for a high tea, informed us of allergies in advance. During the high tea, several dishes with nuts were served, but later something else was made. To which the waiter said: otherwise only eat what you feel comfortable with. Unfortunately not taken seriously at all, even though it is a serious allergy.

We held our wedding at Villa Kalkoven. It was fantastic, everything was arranged down to the last detail. We have been to the location a number of times to discuss everything with Lidian and once for a tasting dinner. We had a great experience with the contact and really compliments Lidian, she is doing a great job! The food was delicious and our day guests thought so too! They also took allergies and dietary requirements into account and that worked out well too! We couldn't have wished our day better and we look back on it very fondly!

Due to an unexpected event we had to cancel our high tea at the last minute. The response to this was very good and it was no problem. Later we had high tea and we enjoyed it very much. Nice location and good service. Enough variety between sweet and savory (with a somewhat predominant raspberry theme). Relatively little choice in teas, but enough variety.

Zeer middelmatig. Tafel niet schoon, werd gewoon op geserveerd Hadden geen tournedos, om 18.00 al op... of gewoon niet ingekocht denk ik dan. Voorgerecht minimaal Kalfsvlees was taai Dessert niet lekker. Helaas , leuke locatie maar diner zwaar onder de maat , zeker gezien de prijsklasse waar zij in zitten.

The food was mostly amazing. Some of the chef's choices where not to my taste. the portions are very small, and the wait staff come past a little too infrequently. I would have liked to know more about the food, I got generic answers to my questions. The place is decked out nicely but it was way too warm. Felt like thee ovens where burning.

Had a delicious meal on Sunday April 21. The service was very good and we were served well with a smile. The food was super tasty. Even though it was very quiet at that time, the atmosphere was pleasant! We will definitely come more often.

We booked a high tea with colleagues a few weeks ago. Yesterday was the planned date. The location, atmosphere and service were extremely good. However, the high tea itself was very disappointing. On the website they promise savory and sweet pastries, chocolate, scones and sandwiches. We got two small hard rolls per person with brie and Serano ham and different types of pastries! What was there was delicious, but not as stated on the website. When we inquired, it turned out that we had run out of scones (although we had already booked a few weeks ago) and instead we received a mini crompouse. Upon request, we later received a small bun with chicken curry and a tuna toast. When I indicated that it was not what I expected (no chocolate, no scones and no sandwiches, especially a lot of sweets) they indicated that they understood that I had expected something different (see website) As compensation we were given a drink. Despite the good service and beautiful location, we were still somewhat disappointed because it was not what we had expected.

Had a delicious meal for lunch this afternoon. We arrived a little early but were able to sit straight away in one of the converted lime kilns. Decided to start with a cup of coffee. When we ordered we asked for the wine list so that we could choose one. Unfortunately it only came later after asking twice. Food was very tasty and so were the oysters. Even though there was another miscommunication about the quantity of oysters, which meant we had to wait an extra fifteen minutes for the last 2. The further sandwiches arrived half an hour later without the side dishes ordered, which only arrived after we had finished them. Good food and also a reason to come. Unfortunately, the staff is somewhat distant and not concerned enough with the customer and his/her orders.

Spent Valentine's Day at this restaurant and it was great. The atmosphere is very good, the service is first-rate, and the food is delicious and beautifully presented. The price is also very reasonable.

Had dinner at this restaurant on Boxing Day. We had to wait more than half an hour before the drinks were taken. The waiter, an Asian lady, was downright surly and grumpy. After the drink had been consumed, a friendly boy brought it with the announcement that it was chaos due to a shortage of staff. After this it took a while before the card arrived. The dish I wanted was crossed out on the menu. We ordered 4 courses. The starter was fine, the intermediate course (canneloni) was not tasty. My main course was brisket, the meat was just pureed and the vegetables were cold, the dessert (something with cheeses), far too rich and mediocre in taste. We had to wave to the waiter a few times to ask for water, wine, etc. In the 4 hours it took us, not once did anyone come to us to ask if everything was OK, and we had to take the dirty plates off the table yourself, so that the last course could be served. The first time I saw the lady who served us smile was when we left. Was certainly happy that she could go home. She should realize that people come for fun, especially at Christmas. I find it scandalous to spend more than €400 and be served like this. All in all a very bad experience. Never again!
