Beautiful place on the water. Recommended.

We arrived around 6 p.m., and our table was already ready on the terrace. Wonderful on this beautiful summer evening. The service was lovely and hospitable, and the girls were lovely! We opted for the four-course dinner with paired wines. A great choice for us! We had a wonderful time, didn't want to leave before 10 p.m., and even ordered a cheese board on the spot. We weren't familiar with this restaurant, but we'll definitely be back. Tip for the restaurant: the cutlery is clean, but it looks a bit grimy; you could improve on that.

We had a fantastic high tea for two. Beautiful location and pleasant outdoor area. The service was truly excellent. Friendly ladies who catered to every need. And the snacks, ranging from sweet to savory, were not only delicious but also a feast for the eyes.

Today I had lunch with family outside on the patio. It was a wonderful experience, especially with this beautiful weather. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. It felt like I was on vacation, but it was only a 5-minute drive from our house. Highly recommended! We'll definitely be back!

Beautiful location and good food for a fair price

We stumbled upon this extraordinary restaurant by chance and unexpectedly. It actually allows you to dine in lovingly furnished old lime kilns. The service was very attentive and competent. From the small delicacies served by the house to the ordered menu, everything was delicious. There is no drinks menu, but almost anything can be conjured up. There is a charming outdoor seating area. I would like to thank you very much for your hospitality and look forward to another visit.

Had a lovely lunch in the garden, great service, lovely ambiance. And who knows, maybe someday they'll even put pancakes made with flour from the Meppel windmill De Weerd on the menu.

My partner and I got married at Villa Kalkoven on June 20, 2025. Both the preparations for the day, led by Lidian, and our wedding day were perfect. Villa Kalkoven is an incredibly beautiful, romantic place to get married, and we received many compliments from our guests about how beautiful the venue is. We were certainly lucky with the fantastic weather, but also with the team at Villa Kalkoven. It was great that Lidian is an experienced wedding planner, and from our first meeting, we felt comfortable right away. Beautiful location, both indoors and outdoors. You can dine inside in the lime kiln. Friendly service and a nice, albeit limited, dinner menu. We had a surprisingly delicious Dutch rosé. Outside, there are lovely spots in the garden along the canal.

Spontaneous lunch at Kalkoven. Delicious food and enjoyed the location by the water. The decor is really very atmospheric.

Yesterday we had dinner with our company but it was not good unfortunately. Very small portions, not good food (cod and orzo with strange taste), substandard service. We were allowed to choose from 'tomato, carrot or tartare' for starters without further explanation. Forgot to bring rounds of drinks (only had 2 rounds the whole evening) did not receive extra ordered side dishes. We felt quite neglected. I am used to much better here.

What a beautiful and atmospheric location. I couldn't really make a choice from the regular menu. With creative inspiration from the hostess, a very tasteful dinner was presented. Absolutely top!

Ik ging samen met mijn vrouw, om onze 12,5 jarige bruiloft te vieren. Bij binnenkomst kwamen wij al 2 dames tegen, die al enige tijd op zoek waren naar een toilet (dus niet aangegeven). Een medewerkster heeft ons een tafeltje aangewezen en is vervolgens spoorloos verdwenen (later zagen wij haar achter de bar praten met collega s). Na een kwartier wachten zijn wij maar weggegaan. Het zou handig zijn als er een menukaart of drankenkaart op tafel zou liggen, dan kun je jezelf alvast inleven. Zo verschillend van een aantal jaren geleden onder de vorige eigenaren; toen voelden wij ons wel welkom.

For our 12.5 year wedding anniversary my wife took me to Villa Kalkovens. We were assigned a table, after which we were left to our own devices. Later we saw the lady who had assigned us the table, chatting with her colleague behind the bar. After waiting for a while we finally left. So different compared to a few years ago, when I felt welcome in the same restaurant. I don't think it's unwillingness but rather a lack of involvement and professionalism. All in all a disappointing 12.5 year wedding anniversary. So we didn't get to eat, but for service and atmosphere a big fail

Beautiful surroundings, nice restaurant.

Heerlijk geluncht op het terras aan het water. Wat een idyllisch plekje. Leuke en vlotte bediening. Enig minpuntje was dat er terloops wordt gevraagd of je een flesje water wilt. Dat is dan een flesje kraanwater waarvoor 5 euro blijkt te worden gerekend. Dat voelt toch wel wat wrang.

In the past few years we have eaten at Villa Kalkovens about five times. A pleasant location with a spacious outdoor garden by the water. The menu offered a lot of choice and the slogan on the website that many and varied regional products are used was not an exaggeration. Recently we reserved a table for four people for a Sunday evening. The experiences were slightly astonishing, almost hilarious. What happened to the lime kilns? Upon entering we were kindly guided to a table in an almost empty kiln room. After that we were ignored for three quarters of an hour, even though there were only a few guests inside and outside and at least four employees could be counted in the service. Eventually we managed to order something to drink and when asked we were given the menu. With that immediately the first surprise: the website showed a less concise and more attractive menu. According to the owner, the marketing agency had apparently been negligent (but even days later the website remains unchanged). In any case, it turned out to be possible to order one of the starters that had been removed from the new menu - scallops. After an hour and fifteen minutes we got two small amuses, fine. Then a small dish was brought with exactly one (Kaiser) roll. When we asked what it was for, it was explained that this roll had been cut into four at the bottom. The reheated stale roll was really meant for four guests! This while the menu states that the starters are served with an organic roll. When ordering, we had mentioned that one of the four of us had to eat gluten-free; no problem. When he asked for a gluten-free roll after that quartered roll, he immediately got a whole roll; chapeau. The promised scallops were draped in slices on a bed of what was called tomato lavash, but the latter was probably carrot porridge from an Olvarit baby jar. The slices of shellfish themselves had no taste at all. As a main course, one of us got a diamond hare (given the size of an apparently very small animal) and the others a decent piece of cod. The fish was gooey, but had little taste and was also placed on a puddle of Olvarit carrot porridge, but with orzo and a few overcooked carrots. The main courses were served with fries upon request; according to the website, every main course should come with fresh fries, but according to the new menu only for an additional fee, so also for us. And apparently the fresh fries were no longer in stock, baskets were placed on the table with mainly leftover scraps under a few larger fries. The price of the bottles of (tap) water (5 euros per bottle) is reasonable, but why are the bottles with such a large profit percentage not first placed in the refrigerator for a while? There was a generous windfall: three of us ordered coffee/tea with chocolates; the fourth only espresso, but he also got chocolates! A beautiful set of luxury tea boxes was served with the tea glass; the pity was that almost all the boxes were empty. This was quickly replaced by full boxes after this was indicated to the staff. Given the experiences that evening, it seemed sensible to check the bill before paying. However, this turned out to be impossible: the bill was refused three times if it was not paid (digitally) first. In short: what happened to the Kalkovens?

Weer grote klasse om je verjaardag te vieren met elkaar. Heerlijk gegeten en prachtige wijn en met Chanel aan tafel voel je je echt een gast.

Prachtige locatie. Binnen en (zeker ook) buiten. het eten was ook lekker en de bediening is aardig, maar..... Nu al 2 keer meegemaakt dat we erg lang moesten wachten op alles. Op de menukaart, op het drinken, op het eten............. Erg kleine porties. O.a. een heel klein frietmandje voor 3 personen. Werd wel aangevuld toen er gevraagd werd of het genoeg was. Zit je als de rest op is frietjes te eten..... Het (gewone) witbier was op na de eerste consumptie. De eerste ice-tea was een flesje met glas met ijsklontje, citroentje. de volgende waren in een klein glaasje, zonder citroentje..... Er werd niet gezegd dat het verrassingsmenu (in mei) inclusief drinken was, stond ook niet op de kaart. Ik kreeg mijn toetje bij het verrassingsmenu toen man en dochter nog op de kaart aan het kijken waren of zij een nagerecht wilden (zij hadden geen verrassingsmenu). De serveerster die bij meerdere tafeltjes vertelt niet te kunnen wachten totdat ze met en wijntje en een peukje op de bank kan ploffen.... (niet echt gepast bij dit restaurant vind ik). Al met al kreeg ik er een ongemakkelijk gevoel van als ik eerlijk ben. Het zat ook niet vol of zo.

We hebben gekozen voor het verrassingsmenu. 1 persoon eet geen vlees, daar werd een mooi vervangend stukje vis voor bereid. Leuke verrassende gerechten voorgeschoteld gekregen. Heerlijk bereid met mooi garnituur (o.a. tuinbonenpuree en gebakken (of gegrild?) asperge. Op advies van de serveerster lekkere wijnen erbij. Leuke vlotte en attente bediening met bij elk gerecht een praatje. Al met al een leuke avond gehad. We komen nog eens terug.

On a beautiful, busy Friday evening we enjoyed the Local Heroes menu together. Positively surprised by this surprise menu where there was certainly room for wishes / requirements and allergies. The a la carte menu also provided more than enough choices to definitely come back again. The enthusiasm of the entire staff ensured a great evening with delicious wines and great food. A very nice detail is the own herb garden which is also reflected on the plate! In short, thank you for this fun, tasty evening and undoubtedly see you again!

A cozy, historical location with a nice concept. They mainly use local products, you should definitely try the local hero menu! With basil oil from Chanel's own herb garden. Really recommended!

Kwaliteit van eten was het echt niet.Waterig soepje en ná twee uur kwam het hoofd gerecht pas. Geen zout op de friet, weinig smaak aan vlees, groente (wat er voor door moest gaan) er zout. Kom er niet nog eens.

We had a fantastic meal at Villa Kalkoven. The dishes are refined, balanced and some really surprising. The service is smooth, friendly and personal. We will come back.

Voorafgaand bij de reservering werd er fijn meegedacht over wat we als familie graag wilden. Eenmaal ter plekke was er idd een rustige plek gereserveerd. Wat wij niet wisten is dat het zitten in een oude kalkoven donker was en dat de akoestiek er niet fijn was. De muziek werd wel flink zachter gezet toe we er om vroegen. 😊 We waren ruimschoots op tijd. De amuse was goed. We kregen daarna twee zeer kleine bolletjes te verdelen voor 10 personen. Iets meer dan anderhalf uur na binnenkomst, kregen we ons eerste eten. Helaas niet echt tegelijk. De messen waren niet scherp, het bleek dat we bestek van het voorgerecht in gebruik hadden. Er was niet gevraagd in welke mate we het vlees gegaard wilden hebben: medium, rare of well done. De patat was te hard gebakken. De asperge salade wat smakeloos. Er was maar één vegetarisch gerecht op het menu en geen ruimte om te zoeken of er ook nog wat anders mogelijk was, echt spijtig. Het dessert zijn we maar niet meer aan begonnen. Bij het afrekenen hebben we onze moeiten benoemd. We kregen €100,- korting!!

Beautiful location but food was a bit disappointing

We had a wonderful extensive Mother's Day brunch at Villa Kalkoven! The place is really fantastic. We sat outside in the sun with a view of the water. The food was delicious and the service was very friendly and professional.

Villa Kalkoven is a beautiful monumental place just outside Meppel. Worth visiting and having lunch or dinner. We chose the Heldenmenu. A beautiful four-course menu with two amuses in advance. The fresh melon balls and the broth of asparagus with hazelnut were delicious. The lamb was tender (I would cut off the fat) and the dessert with blood orange ice cream was also good. Everything served with matching wines. Beautiful evening.

Delicious meal in the most beautiful garden in Meppel. Service was top notch. Mother's Day threw the kitchen planning into disarray, but delays were nicely compensated with smiles, apologies and - afterwards - the bill. Great tent!

Another delicious dinner at the Villa! The 4-course surprise menu was a very good combination of local products, beautifully presented, taste sublime and well coordinated. The Villa Kalkovens is an experience in itself; you sit in a lime kiln that has been beautifully restored and romantically decorated. The service was also great; smooth lady who is super enthusiastic about her profession! Thank you for this experience! We will be back soon

Fantastic place to sit outside and enjoy the view, but then! Long wait for your first drink, food order taken including a cold cuts platter in advance. This board took a long time to arrive and had been dry for quite some time. After taking the 2nd drink, we had been sitting for an hour, waiting again. Just go get the order yourself. Vague excuse that they were busy with it, pff yes with a lot of chatting. There were 6 tables occupied! We were about to leave, then the food arrived. Unfortunately that was disappointing. My 92 year old mother didn't like it. Other food was also so so. We were asked if everything was satisfactory. Neatly indicated whether she wanted to hear the truth. We have shown these without getting personal. An excuse came that there was still a game. The parking lot held 4 cars! how!. Missed opportunity.

Beautiful location (the weather was also beautiful), we were able to take a seat on the terrace on the water. Service friendly and food good. It all took a very long time, but sometimes we had the feeling that we were forgotten. The excuse was not enough staff, but there were enough (they just had no idea what to do) and no owner/management present. As a result, the price/quality ratio was not right at all. All in all a bad experience, a shame as it is a beautiful location

Disappointing, service was friendly, but inexperienced. Didn't see the work and got in each other's way. There was also no one present to manage the team. This makes the price/quality skewed. For these prices you really expect more. The location is beautiful. But certainly not recommended, unfortunately.

A place like that that makes you think why didn't I discover this before... had a really nice evening, what a relaxed atmosphere there is. And, not unimportantly; delicious meal! We chose the surprise menu, with an extra tartare 'for the tasty', well it was surprising. Compliments for the variety and the daring combination of flavors. You taste the purity. Everything great!

Unfortunately the cash register was closed, but they were very friendly and I got a drink to compensate. Worth 5 stars and the location is beautiful.

Restaurant is beautifully designed, has interesting history, and it’s definitely worth seeing. Food was good, reasonably portioned and looked great. The only unpleasant thing is that it isn’t very clean. We found a dead bug on our table, it was dusty and had spider webs everywhere. Kinda makes you think how clean is the kitchen…

I celebrated my birthday here today with a group of 25 people, including lunch and drinks in the lime kiln room. Coordination in advance was great; fast communication and great consideration was given. Even on the day itself, everything was ready on time, everything was beautifully decorated and the food was delicious. Extremely friendly and committed service and you pay a fair price for everything you get at this top location. Recommended, we will definitely come back.

This was the third time we ate here. You've come to the right place for a romantic atmosphere. There are 4 to 5 choices per course on the menu, but that is exactly what we like: less is more. The food is creatively served and always tastes good. Unfortunately you only get a portion of fries with your main course. Some vegetables or other appetizers wouldn't go amiss. Service wise it wasn't great this evening. The portion of fries only came after we had finished 90% of the main meal and a mistake was made with the desert so we had to wait quite a while for it. Furthermore, very nice and polite staff. Still, a very positive review and I recommend it to everyone to have a nice lunch or dinner here.

Had a delicious high tea at this beautiful location. Upon arrival we were warmly welcomed and our coats were taken. We were then escorted to our beautifully decorated table. The waitress was cordial, friendly and presentable. We were well served and enjoyed the delicious food we were served. Very special location to eat, highly recommended!

De locatie is mooi en er is voldoende parkeergelegenheid. Qua eten viel het ons wat tegen. Zo hadden wij als voorgerecht de bisque, helaas was deze veel en veel te zoutig! Als tussengerecht buikspek, deze was erg lekker. Als hoofdgerecht hadden we ossenhaas, helaas was de friet koud maar door het lange wachten hoefden we geen nieuwe meer aangezien we niet nog langer wilden wachten. Als nagerecht lekker een bosbessen dessert en een lekker stoofperen dessert. In totaal hebben wij 3 uur gespendeert, de wachttijden tussen de gangen waren enorm en het was geen drukke avond! We vonden dit erg jammer. Ook met het drinken ging het niet allemaal zoals het zou moeten. Ook hier ging het weer om de wachttijd. De bediening was erg vriendelijk maar er is zeker nog verbetering! Kosten €90-€100 p.p.

Had a high tea today in honor of a baby shower. We had a separate room, which was nicely decorated by Villa Kalkoven. We were received and served super friendly and all the food was fantastic! In short, I really enjoyed it and highly recommended!

I previously gave 4 stars, but unfortunately I can't get any further than 3. The food was okay but no more than that. Three types of oysters but 2 did not really taste good. Main courses (fish) quite flat in taste and with garnishes it did not really come together. It's a pity that the cava was served in a normal glass (thoughtlessly, but still) and that the service seems a bit too nonchalant. For vegetarians, the food is what they buy: there is something on it but there is nothing to choose from. That's really out of date these days! It remains a beautiful location, but the content really deserves more attention and dedication; especially in relation to the high prices being asked.

We expected a lot and were disappointed. table reserved for 5 people, no staff to be seen when entering, but a table was set for 5 people. Meanwhile, the kitchen staff sounded like they were having a lot of fun. A very nice young lady confirmed that it was our table. Everyone ordered a glass of wine, glasses were exchanged dirty and still dirty and not polished, same with the cutlery. Ordered a plate of bread for a tasty snack, initially forgot about it, then brought slices of white bread with tasteless hummus and a reasonable tasting tapenade. lunch dishes nothing to complain about, but not of the expected level. We are not shocked by €7 for a glass of wine, but they were very small glasses. The nicest young lady had to do it all on her own with help from the kitchen. We thought Villa Kalkhoven was a high-quality business, but we are disappointed In the meantime, the owner called and apologized and started preaching to bed. Sand over it

The location is beautiful and there is plenty of parking. We were a bit disappointed in terms of food. For example, we had the bisque as a starter, but unfortunately it was much too salty! Pork belly as an entree, which was very tasty. As a main course we had tenderloin, unfortunately the fries were cold but due to the long wait we didn't need new ones as we didn't want to wait any longer. For dessert, a delicious blueberry dessert and a delicious stewed pear dessert. We spent a total of 3 hours there, the waiting times between courses were enormous and it was not a busy evening! We thought this was a great pity, not everything went as it should with the drinking either. Here too it was about the waiting time. The service was also very friendly, but there is certainly still room for improvement!

Experience Christmas Day dinner. There was just something missing with every course. If it wasn't a garnish, the craftsmanship could have been better. Considering the stories, a disappointing experience.

Christmas Eve, we had to wait hours for our food and when it arrived it was lukewarm. Never again Christmas there.

The place it self and the food are okay but the service is way too slow. Not worth the waiting.

We ate here on Boxing Day with a group of 7. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was good. I give the lower stars for service because of 2 somewhat clumsy things about the restaurant. With the first starter, sandwiches were also served, it was said that the butter would be added shortly. It didn't come, so I asked again and it would be arranged. we were told that they were beating the butter in the kitchen. Think the cook is still knocking, no butter came that evening. The main course was served to everyone, the fries were still coming, it was said. The 3 bowls of fries were placed on the table when everyone had already finished the main course. We thought this was very sloppy for a restaurant of this caliber. If you eat somewhere for a much lower amount, something like this can happen. But here it was a blemish on the evening.

Christmas brunch: after a long wait, we first received lukewarm onion soup and then our coffee and tea, of which 1 tea was also lukewarm. We had to ask for sugar and milk which only came when the coffee was cold. We waited an hour for the food. That was very measured with four slices of sausage, four slices of cheese and a few small bowls with some egg. Only the salmon was well proportioned. The rolls were barely cooked and dry. The disappointment was that the restaurant was full and they were busy. All in all, not the Christmas brunch we were looking forward to. We won't be there again. Very unfortunate.

Beautiful location, warm and attractively decorated! Very friendly people and the food was delicious. The only thing we noticed is that the teacups were very small, and there were not many types of tea to choose from. But we enjoyed it and will definitely come back.

Update of the review below; The way in which the owner of the restaurant responded to me deserves respect. Mistakes are not ignored and feedback is appreciated. A pleasant conversation and compensation for the mistake in the price of the bottle of wine makes everything right for me.🙏 Came to this restaurant full of expectations to have a nice evening with 4 people. There was a staff party going on in the back room with loud music. This may have also had an effect on the service because the entire evening was unfortunately very messy. We were referred to a table with three places while there were four of us, so we arranged an extra place ourselves. When asked what we wanted to drink, we asked for a bottle of white wine, it was stupid that we didn't ask for the menu because we got a bottle for 60 euros!! Turned out later. The dishes took a long time to arrive and were lukewarm. And to top it off... a lady started redecorating the dining room with a lot of noise while we were still having dessert. All in all a disappointment this evening.

Great welcome, lady who received our coats. We were allowed to choose between two tables. The service was a bit slow (I saw it was very busy) with ordering drinks, giving menu cards, serving drinks, etc. I also saw (but now I'm nitpicking) that they didn't look around between service, so our signals didn't notice. But every waiter/attendant was very service oriented, polite and friendly. The starter came quickly, tartare laced with (don't remember the name), was delicious. Which was very nice, we wanted the anniversary menu, but that was actually only in November, we were there on December 7. Still, we were allowed to choose that, very good service. Delicious main course, chicken fillet with butter sauce and puff pastry. Dessert also delicious. What struck me was that when we left we had to find our coats ourselves and left the building. I also understand that they cannot escort everyone out. Nice ambiance, in a Christmas atmosphere, not excessive. Just right.

Enjoyed a delicious lunch menu in a pleasant atmosphere. The menu was surprising, well balanced and delicious. Enjoy delicious food by the water in the summer and this time in the Lime Kiln itself. An attractive space and pleasant service. There are so-called detour wines, this is a detour restaurant.

Well... if you want to have a nice lunch in Meppel, Villa Kalkoven is my favorite! Very tasty dishes on the menu, beautifully presented, pleasant service and a lovely place to sit. In short...highly recommended!

Nice location where we actually sat in 1 of the 3 ovens. Friendly service. Tasty main course. Unfortunately, things went wrong with the appetizers. 1 was unreported and out of stock. This was only told when ordering. And I had a steak tartare, which was tasty, but more tartare than steak tartare (much too finely ground). Inquiries revealed that the tartare is purchased sliced/ground and not cut itself. Be prepared yourself. I did not expect this at a restaurant of this caliber/entourage.
