🚨 Strongly advised against! Very bad experience. We are never coming back!! Waited 2.5 hours for my main course. We sat down at the table at 5:00 PM. It didn't arrive until 7:30 PM. Way too expensive food, very small portions, taste; nothing special. No manager present, 'the bosses' were busy with other things. With 1,000 reviews, I expected something better from this amateur operation.

For my mother's 66th birthday, the three of us went to Villa Kalkoven in Meppel. We made a same-day reservation and were able to get a table immediately that evening – great! The all-inclusive concept is truly top-notch: 4 courses for €75 p.p., including unlimited wine, cocktails, mocktails, and soft drinks. No surprises afterwards. The menu arrived nicely packaged in a stamped envelope, and there is plenty of choice for each course. The veal cheek was fantastic, the wines and cocktails were tasty, and the desserts were good too. A unique location in the old lime kilns and a young, enthusiastic team. All in all, a successful evening. We will definitely be back! Additional remarks: • Upon arrival (we were the first guests), the cava was offered as “with or without alcohol” – that could be stated more politely as “alcohol-free or with alcohol”. • Personally, I found the steak tartare a bit unbalanced due to too much topping; as a result, the tartare itself didn't come into its own as much. • The stuffed pasta came with a pale bread roll and a dollop of plain butter – it could use a bit more flavor (e.g., salted or pepper butter). • With the tenderloin, there was no steak knife, only a bread knife – this made cutting difficult. The Madeira sauce, however, was amazing. • The guinea fowl was a bit disappointing for one of us. • A portion of fries was not included in the all-inclusive concept and had to be paid for separately. Minor points, but the concept and atmosphere more than make up for it!

A drink immediately upon arrival; what a nice location. It is a bit warm, but what do you expect? You are sitting in a lime kiln, after all. The food was good, the service was good. I could go on at length, but long story short, worth every euro.

Location, atmosphere, welcome, and menu (from the smallest starter to the petit fours with coffee) were tip-top for the €75 concept that appealed to us. Highly recommended in a lovely setting just outside Meppel. Also very tastefully decorated and with pleasant acoustics. Although we were not dissatisfied with the food itself — the quality was good and the portions were more than sufficient — the service provided unfortunately overshadowed our experience considerably. The service was very disorganized and came across as unprofessional to us. For instance, we ordered water immediately upon arrival, but after repeatedly asking, it was only served with the main course. The other drinks also often took a long time to arrive and did not come to the table at the same time as the dishes. Additionally, the pace of the kitchen was very rushed. The courses were served one after another at a high tempo, leaving no room for a natural pause or the possibility to delay the main course after the first two courses. We noticed that we were not the only ones experiencing this unrest; at other tables and while settling the bill, we heard various guests express their dissatisfaction with the service provided. The restaurant's concept looks very nice, but unfortunately, the execution and especially the service fell far short that evening. We left feeling unsatisfied and will therefore not visit this restaurant again. Naturally, we mentioned this when settling the bill. Unfortunately, this has also made the threshold for trying another branch of this chain too high for us. It is a shame, because with better organization, this could have been a very successful evening.

The menu does not list prices; they arrived in an envelope. We were unfamiliar with this restaurant. The selection was limited and there were long waits. The food looked well-presented, but certainly not filling. The bill was very substantial and definitely did not reflect the quality. We will not be returning.

A high tea could have been wonderful. Unfortunately, the superb location did not compensate for the poor attention to its guests. At least not on the day we were there. The tea didn't arrive, so we had to ask at the bar. The amount of hot water wasn't enough to pour the first round. So we had to ask again. An extra order outside of the high tea... didn't arrive. Didn't ask again. Bitterballen between a bun... the quality was really far below par. Unfortunately, a bad experience. Normally I leave it at the experience. But you don't want to subject other guests to this who want to experience a real high tea.

There is nothing to complain about regarding the food itself. The taste is good, and the preparation is too. However, the portions are really on the small side. If you order the duck breast, for example, you don't even get half a breast. For a nice full belly, you might be better off going somewhere else. There were no side dishes with the main course. We definitely missed that. We waited well over an hour for the starter. The main course was served well over 2 hours and 15 minutes after we arrived. All in all, we sat for 3 hours for 4 small dishes. The terrace wasn't completely full, and there was no one inside. However, the garden is a lovely place to sit, and another plus is that you can drink unlimited amounts. Was it worth the 75 euros p.p.? Not if you don't consume a lot of alcohol. The staff is also friendly. Normally, I like to leave a review when paying the bill, but unfortunately, I wasn't asked if everything was to our liking. Overall, it certainly wasn't bad. Will we come back here again? I don't think so.

Soup with peas and chickpeas (I would never have chosen that myself, but DELICIOUS!) Mushroom brioche and poached egg And a wonderfully fresh salad with grapes, goat cheese, and pomegranate. I say…. Beautiful place! I was there for a business lunch. We were taken to the terrace; there was no option to sit inside? Unfortunately, the tables weren't clean; there was still sand on them. It was cleaned after 10 minutes, though. I ordered lunch and received the wrong thing. I tried to get in touch but couldn't. So I just walked inside with my plate and asked if it was really for me. We had a bit of a back-and-forth argument, and I pointed out that I had definitely ordered something else. I just ate it anyway, and it was tasty too. I did receive an apology later. I don't want to give a negative review because it is a beautiful place. But perhaps there are a few things you could dot the i's and cross the t's? Mow the grass, trim the hedge, and clean up some mess upon arrival? Make the best of it 👍

The location is beautiful and the restaurant is lovely inside as well. We had reserved a High Tea. The service could have been better. We arrived at 12:30 and were quite hungry, but didn't receive our food until 1:30 PM. When we mentioned this, we were told that this was standard procedure because otherwise things would go too fast. It would have been nice if they had coordinated this with us; for us, it took a bit too long. We had also communicated some dietary requirements in advance. On the phone, this was not a problem. In the kitchen, things hadn't gone entirely smoothly; that can happen and it was resolved, but we felt a bit embarrassed, as if what we had communicated was a nuisance. The High Tea was fine, but all in all, it unfortunately did not meet our expectations, and we felt the price-quality ratio was a bit disproportionate.

We have been here for the 3rd time for Mother's Day, but it gets worse every year… You pay a large amount for a ‘pink’ brunch, but nothing was pink. Last year was truly 100 times better with all pink and tasty snacks. This year was really bad. See photos from last year outside and this year inside. It is unbelievable how bad it has become compared to the past 2 years. This year was the last time, and we will not be coming back next year!! Very disappointing.

We went for dinner here together at the end of April, just the two of us. A beautiful and almost "fairy-tale-like" location. The reception was also very polite; we were greeted warmly at the door and offered a glass of champagne. There was also the option of an alcohol-free option. Then, at the table, we were served an amuse-bouche and the concept was explained to us. Everything is beautifully and tastefully decorated. The acoustics are also very pleasant. Even when it is busy, you can clearly hear your company. A very beautiful and well-executed concept that, combined with the experience of this unique location, is truly worthwhile. For starters, we had the tasting platter of various appetizers. As an intermediate course, we had the crayfish bisque. For the main course, I had the duck and my friend had the beef tenderloin. Very well prepared and very flavorful. For dessert, I had the Semi Fredo, and my friend had the coffee mousse. Thank you, Team Villa Kalkoven, and keep up the good work! We enjoyed ourselves immensely and would love to come back again.

The new dining concept "Unlimited Stylish Dinner" is amazing! My girlfriend and I had a wonderful dinner together. The food, made from local products, was prepared for us with a lot of love. You can see the amuse-bouche in the photo; we won't reveal any more, but it was delightful. The location is also beautiful, both inside and out. For us, it turned into a delightful evening-long celebration in a cool yet warm setting. The staff were busy but seemed to have plenty of time for everyone. All in all, highly recommended for anyone who appreciates quality, originality, and a cozy atmosphere.

Visit on Easter Monday, with a surprise menu. The service was very junior; they had remembered the instructions from the kitchen well, allowing them to clearly explain what the dishes were, but any sense of experience was nowhere to be found. An example of this is that they forgot to serve the wine with the courses, even though it wasn't busy. Furthermore, the staff were smoking by the entrance. The food was decent, but had little to do with Easter. A mix of everything, heavily processed with a thick, lumpy sauce. For the meat dish, we were not asked if medium or well-done, and the portion was far too large. Ultimately, the dish was unappetizing to look at; the mountain of meat lay in a large red puddle, and the proportions and balance were all off. The leeks were full of sand and very tough. In short, for the price of 75 euros per person, we certainly did not eat with satisfaction.

We participated in the Easter brunch, but unfortunately, we were not satisfied. When making the reservation and upon arrival, we indicated that vegetarian preferences needed to be taken into account and that three of the four people do not eat fish. However, little was done about this. Several fish dishes appeared on the table with the remark that we should “just divide the rest up.” Additionally, the food was served without any explanation, the bread rolls were hard, and we had to wait more than an hour for the food. When the wait staff asked if everything was to our liking and we indicated that it was not, it was confirmed that the kitchen still struggles with vegetarian options and that they themselves felt there were few choices available. All in all, it simply didn't add up: the service, the coordination, and the quality of the food were completely out of proportion to the price. For a luxury Easter brunch, you really should expect more.

Had Easter brunch today, Easter Sunday 2026; it doesn't even reach a 7. Bread rolls too hard, impossible to cut through, cheese was already sweating. The tartare has been sitting out too long, coffee served cold, service bad, very long wait, when they clear the tables they leave half of it behind. Atmosphere is reasonable. Coffee that was served cold is put on the bill, though. And all that for €185, scandalous. But you have had reviews before: tartare bad, hard bread rolls, and after a year nothing has been resolved yet, quite sad. Not worth repeating.

For €50 pp (including drinks to bridge the endless wait), we waited at least 1.5 hours for a small cup of soup, and at least half an hour later, a meager lunch. 1.5 mini bake-off rolls per person. Lukewarm coffee. When we mentioned it when paying, there was barely any reaction. The restaurant is apparently trying to squeeze every last drop out of the customer, cannot handle the number of people, and offers the absolute minimum. We went home to eat a proper lunch. Very disappointing.

Having worked in a Michelin-starred restaurant years ago, it can sometimes be difficult to find cutlery and other necessities, but here it was simply perfect. Highly recommended.

Made a last-minute reservation. It was great that there was still a spot available. Villa Kalkoven is a charming restaurant. The food on the small menu is delicious. It did take a while for the food to be served, even the bread platter, which was delicious, by the way. So, it's recommended to order a bottle of wine (or water) so you have plenty to drink while waiting. The restaurant is conveniently located near the highway, making it easily accessible. There are plenty of parking spaces, making parking easy.

From the very beginning, the initial consultation was incredibly pleasant: everything was clearly communicated, and we were able to easily plan our day based on existing choices. The team was incredibly involved in the planning, not only for the venue itself but also beyond. They didn't hesitate to help with other tasks to make our day a success. We were completely taken care of and were only asked the necessary questions to arrange everything to our liking, such as food preferences and decorations. They even arranged a florist for us, which all went very smoothly. On the day itself, Stefan took excellent care of everything and ensured it ran smoothly. The food exceeded our expectations, and the shared dinner with our guests was a huge success – everyone was thrilled! The party was fantastic, and the end of the day was also perfectly arranged. Villa Kalkoven made our wedding day unforgettable. We recommend this venue to anyone looking for a place where they can celebrate their special day with peace of mind. Thank you for everything!

Very tasty food, surprising flavors. There was a wedding, so the noise level was a bit high. Normally, noise isn't a problem. The service was very friendly and attentive.

We celebrated our wedding here and it was really well organised.

Our plan was to have lunch (two friends). Unfortunately, the lunch menu turned out to be very limited. The Villa menu consisted of soup, a sandwich, and a salad for €17.50. There was also no drinks menu. Since we couldn't choose from those, we opted for appetizers. These were served without cutlery, napkins, or plates, even though they did include spreads. The location is beautiful, but the plants in the containers looked very sad, including those at the entrance. This was probably due to the funeral that had just taken place, which is why we were asked to arrive later, as it was running late. All in all, a sad affair. A day later, we received a call from Villa Kalkoven, and the above was explained and promptly resolved.

We enjoyed the delicious four-course regional menu. It was very tasty, but it's a shame there wasn't more explanation about the menu. For example, the meat came from a local farmer. This really reflects the regional feel.
