Authentic Dutch food away in a very homey atmosphere. In business for over 60 years and frequented by locals.

Upon entering, it resembles a home, and the food was okay. The menu was rather limited in terms of selection, and the portions were quite small upon arrival. It's not expensive, but in terms of quality, there are better places in Amsterdam for "Dutch" cuisine. The service is quick and helpful. The atmosphere is quirky, a bit kitsch. Regarding the food, I wouldn't return because the menu isn't interesting.

Every diner who walks in is greeted like family and treated to home cook local food meant for sharing. We love the cozy, homely and hearty food that we got served, it makes you take a bite, which will be delish cos’ of the hearty cuisson and you inadvertently ponder and chat with those at the table, exactly intended by name of this restaurant - Hap (bite) Hmm (nice). Too bad I don’t have more nights in the city, this has to be my go-to eat if I’m next back in Amsterdam.

A traditional, family-run restaurant. The food is good and the staff is friendly. We went there as tourists because of the good reviews. Unfortunately, the seating is very cramped, there's not much space, but that seems to be normal here in Amsterdam.

Hap hmm is one of those rare restaurants that deserves more than 5 stars. Be sure to book in advance if you want to eat there; people know it's a hidden gem. The dishes are delicious, varied, and generous. I've never been served so quickly (no wait at all for our soup starter, and very little for our main courses and desserts), and the price is really reasonable considering the quantity and quality of the food. What really made the difference and touched us the most was the warm welcome we received for us and our baby. After a long afternoon walking around Amsterdam, our baby was crying from hunger when we arrived at the restaurant. Everything was done to ensure his comfort: a lovely dish was served in 30 seconds flat, a generous portion of vegetables with an excellent sauce, a high chair just like at home, and even some small toys to keep him occupied while he waited. He didn't leave a single bite, and neither did we. We loved the staff's kindness; please don't change a thing, and thank you again.

I would have loved to review this restaurant, but unfortunately we weren't able to dine there despite having made reservations the day before. Once we arrived, we were told our table wasn't ready. After a good 25 minutes of "I'm sorry" and lame excuses, we left. The service and friendliness of the staff were zero, and we didn't know about the food. Never again!!!!!

i enjoyed the overall ambiance of the restaurant, the food was yummy but it wouldn’t be something to die for in my opinion (said in the nicest way possible). The staff are friendly and welcoming, prices were a bit high for the quality of the food but then again this is amsterdam so maybe it’s just the comparison from someone coming from hong kong. Regardless, i had a lovely schnitzel with the chef sauce (please note they will charge u extra for fried potatoes over boiled potatoes 😅)

A delightful place, away from the tourist crowds. For our stay in Amsterdam, we booked dinner in advance at this typical Dutch restaurant. Bobby and his staff were very kind. The food was truly excellent and of high quality; the stewed pears were a pleasant discovery; they were delicious. It's a shame the portions were a bit small. I have one observation (not to be critical): main courses are usually accompanied by a side of boiled potatoes. That evening, they ran out, and the waitress offered us extra fries instead, which we paid for. We didn't appreciate this offer because it was their oversight, and we paid as if the side dish had been served. We would have preferred either a discount or an additional side dish. Despite this small flaw, we still recommend the place for the simplicity of the dishes and the atmosphere.

Forget all the expensive fine dining restaurants. Just eat here!! The schnitzel was the best we've ever had. The chicken melted in your mouth. The endive and stewed pears tasted just like they should, just like your grandma used to make. Only the dessert (macaroon) was disappointing. Thanks!!

Authentic local Dutch restaurant. It's a small place and hence it's better to make a booking. Other than the main dishes, I like the vegetables and boiled potatoes that was served together. Service was good and friendly.

Really great restaurant serving Dutch food. I tried the Amsterdam chicken which is like a roast chicken but brewed in a dark beer and it was so tender and juicy. The boiled potatoes and vegetable sides were also really good. The standout to me was their local liqueur. They had it in many flavours but I was curious to try the rose one and it was absolutely delicious. The staff were very friendly.

Small cosy diner serving local home cooked Dutch dishes. Loved the fork tender chunky beef stew accompanied by fluffy boiled potatoes. Pairs well with a glass of port or sherry. Chicken noodle soup was nice and homely. Viennese schnitzel thinly breaded and the pork meat enclosed within was thick/ firm to the bite.

Great place for a wonderful home cooked meal. Highly recommend reservations, it is a small and cozy atmosphere. We arrived when they opened and were able to accommodate us without reservations. We really enjoyed the food here.

We wanted something authentic and special for our last night in Amsterdam, and found this place with a quick internet search. We didn't know it's actually pretty famous, and deservedly so. We showed up without reservations, only to discover it's a small family-run place tucked into an apartment building. There were two of us, and they asked us to wait outside a few minutes for a table because there was a possible no-show. Luckily, another party finished and left, so we got their table. The schnitzel, vegetables, and boiled potatoes were excellent, as was the service. This was a meal to remember!

Of three dinners in Amsterdam with traditional dishes, this was the best: well-made meat, good desserts, bright, welcoming, and clean atmosphere. Fair prices. Booked 8 days in advance. Only flaw: the tiny bathroom! Clean, of course: but if you're a woman, not very agile and of a different weight... 😊

Delicious!!! A small, hidden restaurant, not far from the tourist streets. We had the soup of the day, with vegetables and pasta, delicious. For main courses, we had Grandma's Meatball and stewed meat, served with a side of vegetables of the day and potatoes. Everything was delicious! The meat was cooked really well. I highly recommend it.

Very fast service, delicious food, and a great price. Chicken soup as a starter, schnitzel with peas/carrots and boiled potatoes for me, and stew with stewed pears and fried potatoes as a main course for my friend. Straw with fruit and coffee for dessert. With a soft drink for €35 per person. Highly recommended!

A restaurant serving traditional Dutch cuisine, a rare find. Dishes are home-cooked and traditional, and very tasty. I recommend the soup and then the three most typical dishes: stew, chicken in beer, and grandma's mega meatball. All dishes are accompanied by boiled or fried potatoes (the former is better, as the dishes are so rich in sauce) and delicious seasonal vegetables. I suggest saving room for dessert, because it's worth it! Finally, it's best to book because seating is limited and the kitchen closes early.

We are a couple from the UK and fancied trying some classic Dutch food. This place did not disappoint. It’s in a residential area and is essentially in what feels like someone’s house. The food is basic but tasty and the service is excellent. Overall a really nice experience and good value food.

I arrived 10 minutes before opening without a reservation, and they seated me, so I went in alone to eat. The restaurant had a very cozy atmosphere, which made me feel very comfortable, and the staff were very friendly. I ordered the Today's Special, which was Braised Beef with Onions, served with Red Cabbage and Boiled Potatoes. It looked simple, but the potatoes were fluffy and delicious, and the stew was delicious! 🇳🇱💙 I think this will be the most memorable meal I had during my trip to Amsterdam.

This is a lovely Dutch restaurant, popular with tourists and locals alike. Booking ahead is essential (you can email) as a number of people without a reservation had to be turned away while we were there. It is great value, the helpings are big and the food is really well cooked. Lots of classic Dutch recipes. It feels like a very friendly family affair - the service is cheerful and efficient. Food was delicious, service was awesome and the price was very reasonable. They were able to get us in with a table for 2 at 6pm for the same day when I emailed them at noon. We had the schnitzel and the beef stew with a macaron ice cream sandwich; everything was delicious. Highly recommend. It is a small space so make sure to make a reservation before you go!

I tried some Dutch home cooking. The meat was okay, but the side dishes were truly amazing. The green beans and carrots were delicious. The portions weren't large, but the prices were very affordable. It's best to make reservations; they're rarely available.

This restaurant is fantastic and unique precisely because it's off the beaten path. It's located in a remote location, yet easy to reach by tram 17 from the central station. When you enter, it feels like you're in an old Dutch private home, all made of wood. The room is small and has limited seating, so it's best to book in advance by email, as we did. The dishes, typically Dutch, are truly excellent. We had the Stewed Beef, a beef stew cooked according to a special family recipe from 1965, which was truly excellent, and the Amsterdam Chicken, chicken stewed in a local dark beer, truly special, tender, and flavorful. All this was accompanied by delicious stewed potatoes, green beans, carrots, and peas. To finish, a delicious dessert, but it was obvious it wasn't homemade. The service is quick and friendly. The prices are reasonable compared to the Dutch average, which is expensive. If you're looking for a different and unique place that's not touristy, where you can eat excellent Dutch dishes, don't miss it.

reservations definitely recommended. we came here without one and it was quite a wait (our choice to do so!) and people who lined up after us got turned away. i feel very lucky to have gotten to eat here on my last day in the netherlands 😭 the food seems simple but the execution is without flaws. the dishes LOOK unassuming, possibly even underwhelming, until you taste them we got the schnitzel which was perfectly fried, seasoned, clearly good quality pork, and the "grandma's meatball" which was bursting with flavor. and it was extremely juicy, and the size of my fist 😂 the vegetables that come with the dishes are steamed or prepared otherwise simply but they are paired thoughtfully with the main you selected. and they are not flavorless mush like you might expect when you hear "steamed vegetables" - they are still salted, cooked the perfect amount to preserve the essence of the vegetable boiled potatoes might sound boring but they are damn good potatoes. the quality of them matters and they had a great texture and flavor. have them with some of the sauce from the meatball... heaven definitely recommend this place if you are looking for traditional dutch cuisine 💖 p.s. the restroom is laughably tiny. it's clean! usable! but it's very small in a way that i've never seen before 😅

Great place to eat. Food came out simple but so well prepared. Really happy to try local food and not the mediocre tourist trap area restaurants. Possibly the most satisfying meal we had in Amsterdam. The schnitzel was so crispy and delicious. Stewed beef was fantastic. Pork chop was juicy and tender. Concerned it was a bit undercooked in some areas though. Liver was very interesting but delicious.

We ordered traditional Dutch dishes, although they are nothing special like in Croatia where we come from. Quite expensive prices for such simple dishes - chicken breast fried in a pan with pepper sauce and classic beef goulash (the meat was excellent) and a side dish of boiled potatoes and vegetables (it was not presented what the vegetables were, in the end it was boiled carrots and peas and something else we were not sure what it was, but it was not delicious). The employees were very friendly.

Hands down the best Dutch food I've ever had. On top of the amazing food was the phenomenal staff. A lot of restaurants don't have the personal touch feel, this absolutely felt like a homemade meal.

Small restaurant, very much recommended reservations. We lucked out by being there when they opened. Solid food, schnitzel with boiled or fried potatoes. Super pork chop. Meatballs. All delicious. Lots of veggies including simple but addictive cooked cabbage and carrots.

they didn't give me any sauce, for 20 euros I got 4 asparagus, 2 slices of ham and 2 boiled eggs for the main course, the 3 of us got the same portion of potatoes in one bowl as the 2 people on the tables next to us got, but the waitress lied to us, these people got a smaller amount when they got the same amount, the food had zero spices and looked like random shopping on a Sunday evening, after which you make a healthy meal to add macronutrients, not a tailored dish a restaurant with a rating of 4.7 and a cost of 20 euros per meal, I do not greet you.

Order carpaccio, tomato soup, liver and onion, Amsterdam chicken, beef stew and schnitzel. Carpaccio had fresh ingredients, good quality beef, pesto had good flavour. Slight disappointment is the carpaccio has sinew which affected the texture. Tomato soup has strong smoky flavour, was yummy. Liver is normal, how you expect it to taste. Onion was very flavourful. Chicken was white meat and flavourful. Meat was not dry. Would probably taste better with dark meat. Stew beef has good flavour but is quite dry even with the sauce. Some might find it to be too salty Schnitzel was yummy. Crispy, meat is tender and has good texture. You get a TON of potatoes. The chocolate soufflé is a lava cake and not a soufflé. Probably just translation error. Lava cake is very meh, too sticky, too dense, not enough lava. Favour was alright though. The house special lemon ice cream is good. Strong and clean lemon flavour.

We love mediterrean food and we loved this restaurant. Excellent flavours, good wines and a special liquer tia maria at the end. It is understandable why you have to do a reservation due to the high quality Affordable prices and well served dishes. Very recommend to try dutch food.

It's a shame that a young foreign couple (me and my boyfriend) is not treated the same as a national adult couple (40-60 years old). To make a long story short, the treatment felt very different and even a little bad. Additionally, they omitted extra pricing information and we ended up paying more. They didn't offer us the daily specials or the option of which vegetables we wanted. I compare all this with the table next to me (I understand Dutch quite well and I listened to the conversation with the waitress), they were informed of all the extra prices, the specials of the day, the vegetable option they had and several other recommendations. Although the food was very delicious.

Super cozy restaurant, we ate there 3 days a week for a few weeks because we were working in Amsterdam. The food is really delicious and plenty of it so your belly is nice and full. Delicious food again!! Pulled pork with boiled and baked potatoes with ratatouille, then extinguished with a Zatte from the Het IJ brewery.

The schnitzel and all the boiled vegetables that came with it were amazing, our family loved it very much.

A perfect place to go after a long day. Warm and comforting. The stewed beef was extremely satisfying and the broth went well with the boiled potatoes. My wife and I left full and there were sides leftover. I would highly recommend it to everyone. They did have vegetarian options. Highly recommend making a reservation as it's very popular.
