Great pub. The breakfast was delicious

The Hoopman on Leidseplain is a small, cozy Irish pub with a pleasant atmosphere and friendly service. We only ended up here by chance as a last resort because we didn't want to pay an entrance fee to the Waterhole Live Music Bar hehe, but we don't regret the visit in the slightest. We sat down at the bar and, in keeping with our old habit of never changing a running system, ordered a HopHouse13. Always highly recommended! Last but not least, I wanted to try another beer and asked the very nice bartender about Swinckels, as I had never read or seen this before. I was extremely positively surprised and fell in love with the Swinckels, it was very, very tasty! Unfortunately, this beer is not available in Germany, so another trip and a trip to Hoopman for this culinary delight is definitely an option.

We spent new year's eve in the bar. After going for a cigarette outside, we got locked out- no warning or anything. My husband's jacket was still inside. Then we started knocking on the door and after the staff saw us explaining with gestures that the jacket is inside did not even made an effort to unlock the door or even to try understanding the situation. The party continued inside for the staff which is fine but at least should have given us the jacket. It was freezing outside and this is how we got treated. Today we were able to take the jacket and got a sad sorry for the inconvenience....This should not have happened in the first place! We were just outside. My advise definitely skip this place when in Amsterdam.

Came for breakfast here but was disappointed as I just wanted scrambled eggs and sausage and toast but had to pay the full price of the Irish breakfast which was €14. When the food came it looked really nice and tasted really really good. So can’t fault the quality of the food here. Overall good experience just a shame about paying full price for a select few items from the breakfast but it is what it is. 2 breakfasts and 2 drinks came to €36 which I think was worth it for the quality and the amount of food you get.

We witnessed two waitresses throwing each other on the ground, didn’t come to serve us for lunch and made us pay 8 euros for water!!

Stopped here for a drink, nice place and a big spot. Just got beer. If it was nicer weather I think we would have liked it more to sit outside.

A lovely old bar with lots of atmosphere and nice Belgian beer amongst others :)

Terrible Terrible place offaly dirty aswell which isn't cool if ur eating which I was staff mainly the bar man or the server think he was doing bout very rude and then while paying asked us would we like to give a tip for service 🤣 and then stood there waiting for it 😂😂 the best thing about the place is the door out of it AVOID MY GOOD FRIENDS AVOID

You simply don't get served here, even though you often have eye contact with the waiters. But it wasn't just us, it also happened to a family and two men next to us. After 20 minutes we got up and went to the restaurant opposite where we were immediately served in a friendly manner.

Food was good but overpriced. The atmosphere from the outdoor seating is nice.

Unfortunately It took very long for everything... till we could order, till we got the drinks, the food and also till we got the bill. Prices are immensely high ! Especially for the food cause the portions are ridiculously small.... We got no receipt and the prices for the non alcoholic drinks are not on the menu. Would not recommend it :(

I had been here before for a drink a few years ago and it was ok. I was back in Amsterdam so thought I'd go for drinks and some food. I went in, it was very quiet, a few people inside and outside. Lady behind the bar gave me menus and told me to take a seat and someone would come and take my order. 15 mins later... No one had been, not even to take a drinks order. Multiple servers had walked past me, multiple times, eventually one acknowledged me but still just walked by. So I took the menus back to the bar and said I had been waiting a while and no one has taken my order so I was leaving. They didn't seem bothered. Maybe that's why it was pretty empty. Anyway went to another place close by, seated and order taken right away. Disappointing but if you are doing table service and then staff aren't attentive you'll lose custom 👋🏻. If you are after an Irish bar here go to Dan Murphy's instead. If you're after food go literally anywhere else 🍴

Bram is a top server, he is friendly and very sociable, we give him a 10+ and we also really like the caterina. Everything is totally nice about this place but the staff makes it even better!!

Very nice pub, friendly staff perhaps a little too hasty, excellent beers especially the trap ones, the nachos didn't excite me.

The place is very noisy, we went in for lunch. We ordered a salmon steak and a Caesar salad. The order was brought quickly. The fish was cooked deliciously, the salad was terrible, seasoned with mayonnaise, a lot of onions, if you are preparing a "Caesar" that is not classic, then at least specify in the menu that it is the author's and what ingredients are included in it. There is one toilet for a huge establishment, I do not even want to write anything about cleanliness. In my opinion, the establishment is only suitable for going in for a glass of beer and leaving.

The female waiter wanted 25€ for 3 beers - beware of a rip-off!

My recent visit to this restaurant was disappointing. The food was underwhelming, with the steak served alongside coleslaw instead of a more fitting sauce. The young staff seemed inexperienced and lacked the necessary customer service skills. When I asked about the sides that accompanied a dish, I was simply told to "read the menu." I specifically requested coleslaw with my fish and chips, but was initially told it wasn't possible—even though it's served with the steak. When my food finally arrived, I asked another server for coleslaw, and while she agreed, it took an additional 15 minutes to arrive. The staff appeared to rely heavily on the ordering screens, with little initiative beyond that. Unfortunately, this experience has ensured that I won't be returning.

Spilt my guiness within 5 seconds and poured me a new one

My friend spilled his pint all over me and they brought us out a new one. Lovely staff.

They didn't give a receipt when we paid, the non-alcoholic drinks' prices are not on the menu. They didn't bring the right beer we asked and the bacon-cheese toast didn't have any bacon. My toast was a little burnt.

Great pub in a great location. Good selection of drinks

English speaking waitress have terrible service. She is not Dutch. Possible red brown hair with arrogant attitude, assuming you understand the menu and ride when you asked if they had a drink (basically said to see the menu and if it is not there it is not available). Why do people that do not like to work with people work in the hospitality business. I definitely will not go out refined coming to this bar go next door for better service.

On a hot day it was nice to stop for a cold beer and a snack. My sons and I were really impressed with the service and loved the bitterballen and Old Amsterdam cheese.

We had a very good lunch. Delicious Angus steak, perfect Fisher & chips. This may seem a little expensive: 2 dishes, 2 beers 50 and a bottle of water, 76.50€ but in Amsterdam it is quite common with the bottle of water at 8€.

Nice typical Irish pub atmosphere. Prices are tourist inflated. The service is neither too slow nor too fast. It has an acceptable duration, but the employees could be more polite. When we asked about the beers that did not list the price, they gave involuntary answers as if to say "What are you asking?" Paying 17.50 for two beers is a bit much

Only authentic Irish bar around in Amsterdam that we could find. The service was provided by a lovely bartender who was very personable and genuinely Irish. The nachos were better than I could have imagined and even though we weren't starving, we ended up almost licking the plate clean. Guinness was just what you would be hoping to get served at an Irish establishment, delicious. Highly recommended by myself and my Irish partner.

Rudest service we have ever experienced. We were sitting outside having a drink when one of the staff came to tell us that the terrace was closing. I work in a restaurant myself so I know when you need to close the terrace that you should inform customers about 10 minutes before so they can finish up their drink. That is what we thought was the case but he came back not even ten seconds later demanding that we finish our drink. We told him he should have let us know before because we did not want to throw back the already overpriced drinks we paid for. He threatend us that if we didn’t finish our drink in five seconds that he would take them from us and he litteraly started to try to take the drinks out of our hands. I never write reviews but I just wanted to say to the tall skinny guy from last night, I think if you’re going to act like this you should maybe get another job. Don’t recommend going here 🙃

I first walked into this bar on St Patrick's Day and it was tremendous fun! The bar staff is super friendly and very fast, even when there is a large crowd. This bar attracts a large international crowd, so it's easy to meet people from various nations.

Tourist trap, very long wait, unpleasant waiter, disappointing meal, tables are very small. I strongly advise against it!

Great Irish bar in a good location. Good service. Nice selection of beer. We tried bitterballen for the first time. It’s a fried ball of meaty gravy. The spicy nut came in a cool little can. Plus fries, the Dutch love their fries.

Stopped in for a pint of Guinness but I ended up having dinner as well. My girl and me loves our choices. Staff was friendly and good vibes and the bar.

It's a bit of a tourist trap given its location, but they have a big TV screen and a bunch of normal screens. They show Liverpool FC and other sports. Beer offerings are diverse- a few small breweries plus the normal stuff. Beera aren't poured the most care, but that's a small sin. The veggie burger and frijtes were fine given the venue.

We had an 8 pm dinner reservation at a different place and needed a quick drink before hand. Guinness tasted very fresh.

Bar bruyant, le personnel est froid comme une porte de prison et personne ne vous amène de carte avec des prix. La serveuse nous demande ce que l’on veut boire, on commande une bière fruitée et on reçoit du cidre rouge avec des glaçons dans un verre à vodka ???? Les tabourets ne sont pas vissés et il n’y a rien pour poser les vestes. Mentions particulières pour les nachos très très bons. Je recommande mais pas vraiment, si vous trouvez ailleurs, foncez.

A lovely lunch spot in the middle of the square. Listen to trams pass by while enjoying lunch under the trees. Food and service are both good here. Reasonable prices too.

Schnelle und freundliche Bedienung. Toiletten sind zwar unterirdisch, aber der Rest der Lokalität ist sehr angenehm. Nachtrag, leider wird auf Emails nicht reagiert.

We came in here accidentally as we were looking for P0rnstar Martini drink. We didn't even realise it was an Irish pub (of course until we sat down as it has specific atmosphere). If we weren't from Ireland we probably would have stayed longer as the drinks were good and the location is amazing. Also reasonable prices

Located directly on the tourist friendly Leidseplein, which the locals have largely abandoned, this is one of the many cafes on the plein (square). Wide variety of beers and local (bar) favorites.

The food was okay and the stuff was friendly. However a WC was small and smelly. It is located in the basement. I have injured foot and it was difficult for me to get there. A hand dryer was not working.

Came in and sat outside around 4pm on a Saturday. It was busy and you seat yourself. The servers were nice and attentive once they noticed you were there. There are several other restaurants nearby with outdoor seating as well so it was a bit loud. Only had some snacks and they arrived hot and tasted great.

Wow. I have been many times in Amsterdam, by far, this is the best place that I ate dinner in! The food was very good and fresh, and tasty of course. The cheesecake is out of this world. You have to try them!
