Café Hoppe is simply perfect: an absolute Amsterdam classic that fully lives up to its reputation. We stopped by in the middle of a hectic day, and it was the ideal place to warm up, relax, and escape the chaos. We loved all the beers we tried, and we also had the typical Dutch jenever, which was such a fun and delicious addition. The bitterballen were excellent, perfectly crispy and exactly what you hope for with a cold drink. The iconic sand on the floor gave it that old-school, authentic feel, and despite being right in the middle of the city, it felt cozy and calm (we went at midday). The atmosphere is warm, charming, and genuinely local. Service was super friendly, welcoming, and fast, which made the whole experience even better.

This was our go-to place for beer during our 3 days in Amsterdam. The Bitterballen is really delicious. Ijwit is a great option for those who like light beers. The atmosphere is very nice, and it's a place mostly preferred by locals. We met lots of people. They also have heaters outside, which is great; sitting outside and breathing in the city air is really nice in the winter months. It became our favorite place in Amsterdam :)

Friendly bartenders, excellent beer and jenever choices, food was awesome (we had the grilled sausage and smoked salmon sandwich), it was warm on a rainy late November day….and did I mention the beer?

Traditional, cosy, inviting, Hoppe has everything you want in a pub. The old barrels, dark wood and massive paintings are really atmospheric, the beer is excellent, it's mainly full of locals which adds to the atmosphere. The staff are friendly, welcoming and attentive although service can be slow when it's busy. We have been coming to Hoppe annually for the last 7 years, it's the first place we go when we arrive in the city, absolutely love it here. We've spent many happy hours in Hoppe on rainy November evenings and look forward to many more.

Bitterballen and Amstel, what more do you need on a visit to the Dam ? Our favourite bar in the Dam ,one of the oldest and not lost its charm at all. No music , history on every wall , great staff and you know its a proper bar with sand on the floor ! Will always be a port of call for us

We came to this great brown bar pretty late in the evening, and we enjoyed our time in it - the whole bar/pub ambiance is excellent, and the sand on the floors just adds to it!

Delicious Hoppe Vieux with cola, thoroughly enjoyed. My husband enjoyed his draft beer. We both enjoyed the excellent bitterballen (bitterballen), Amsterdam onions, and platters.

Friendly staff, left side was closing at 8:30pm on a weeknight and asked if I get food. They said go to the right side entrance bc the pub side was open late. No hot food after 8:30pm so I had a beer and some cheese and olives. I was hoping for bitterballen but the fryer was off on a Sunday night. Cosy atmosphere, quiet pub. Staff were friendly but had to go to the bar to ask for food and pay. Good snack and beer 🍻

My niece who lives in Amsterdam recommend Hoppe. Took a bit of time to get served but our bartender Dirk turned out to be super friendly. Beer was delish. Great example of a brown bar. It surely gets crowded in busier times, but we got a spot at the bar inside.

Service is not quite good for tourists. You buy something the coffee there and a cake from another place and the workers front to all others visitors prohibit to eat your food. That’s totally insane. You must to be loyal to all customers. I think you should revisit your policy about that. 1/5

Very historic vibes in this place. We stopped in for drinks. Staff did not like us moving chairs around so we had our kids sit at one and we took another. The patio was great for people watching and we saw it was bumping the next day when we walked by again.

The atmosphere is a plus, reminiscent of a 400-year-old atmosphere, with sand on the floor—they clean it as customers walk by. A large selection of local spirits—Genever in every form. The downside is the staff, who seem fed up with the crowds and tourists—they'd probably feel more comfortable with local customers.

The bitterballen was delicious. The beers were also good, and you might want to try their winter specials. It's a place to sit, people-watch, and chill.

Great service and one of the oldest bars in the city centre close to the canals. Their Bitterballen was just amazing and felt so fresh along with the mustard sauce. Totally worth a visit and choose this if you are first timer and thinking which bars to go.

Owner should learn to fight with his fists

Worst place EVER. Never visit this place. We were 4 people, ordered some beer and snacks (which were awful). Since we wanted to try the traditional Amsterdam fries they do not sell, so went to a nearby place to get the fries... We got kicked out cause we couldn't have the fries in the same table... The waitress basically shout us out like we were dogs, and even the ower treated as if we were committing a crime... Of course we asked for the check and left this horrible place. DO NOT RECOMMEND

This café is the original, along with De Bobbel in Maastricht. Where professional bartenders know how to pour a pilsner and treat guests. Alfred Heineken owned it for a long time because of its unique top-notch quality.

I had tried to order the mulled wine, and the bartender told me with a very strong passive aggressive attitude, “ we don’t have any, maybe we will next month.” Then started helping another customer. I was excited for the bitterballen but that interaction ruined any opportunity. would not go back here or recommend.

Despite looking packed from the street, there's usually seating inside. Outdoor tables offer better Amsterdam views if that's your priority. Staff moved efficiently despite the crowds. We tried the vegetarian bitterballen - freshly fried, crispy, and served within 10 minutes. The staff were genuinely friendly and welcoming throughout. Perfect for a quick, authentic Dutch snack without the tourist trap experience.

My husband and I had a couple of amazing nights at Hoppe! The Bitterballen is absolutely incredible (tip: break it open first and let it cool down a bit before eating). We were told to try the meatballs but we didn't have time. We were having so much fun with the staff and the locals that by the time we realized we were hungry, the kitchen had already been closed for a long time, haha! Serves us right. We will be back when we return to Amsterdam and we will be trying the meatballs, and will of course be getting the Bitterballen again. Thank you to everyone we met on our vacation, you truly made it so much fun for us both!

Very nice and I didn't find it too expensive compared to other similar places. The food was very good.

Apart from the fact that the coffee is 3 Euros, the place is likable. If there were a few more tables and chairs outside, it would be even more delicious.

A nice cafe with a kitchen in the center of Amsterdam with good service. I went there with my wife and daughters and we had a great time. Decent food and fast service. Recommended for a quick lunch break.

During our stay in Amsterdam, we noticed this place was always packed, frequented more by locals than tourists. After several attempts, we finally managed to get in, and we understood why: excellent beers, a quaint atmosphere, and friendly staff. We also tried the cheese board served with two dips, which was really good. It's a lively and very popular place, so not ideal for those looking for a quiet spot, but definitely recommended.

The legendary Bruine Café, where you absolutely must stop, remains as always.

The €4 ham and cheese toastie was easily the best thing I've eaten on this trip to Amsterdam. It's simple but it's executed perfectly.

We visited on Saturday so it was very busy and couldn’t sit outside which was ok. It can be very loud inside but again, nothing we can complain about when people are having a good time! We stopped for a drink and some Bitterballen. A few drinks on the menu were no longer available so we had to ask for alternatives which we were told were not on the menu but the staff were great with letting us know the options. Only criticism is that is isn’t clear which toilets are male or female or if they are mixed so we took our chances.

Hoppe is always great! I was in Amsterdam with international guests from all over the world for a conference. The weather was beautiful, and the Hoppe guests were outside in the sunshine, so I could stand inside with my group and give them the experience of a real Amsterdam pub: friendly and good service, and of course, bitterballen (Dutch meatballs) and ossenworst (ossenworst)!

The waitress stared at us the whole time, with an extremely nasty look. Very unpleasant, I do not recommend it!

Waited almost 10min without a menu for someone to come to our table. We asked for a menu when the waitress came to take our order, she hands it to us and proceeds to sit at a table talking away and eating. No other staff came to attend us and after waiting for 15 something minutes we just left. Wasted almost 30 minutes. Very poor service.

Just stopped in for a beer on the way home as it's right down the street from our VRBO. It was hopping outside, but we were able to get a seat inside and the vibe was awesome. Will probably be back during our stay

I don't usually leave reviews; but the food was so so delicious?? I ordered bitterballen. No, the bitterballen was hot, so I asked if they could give me a fork, but they said you have to eat it with your hands and they kept talking rudely. The customers next to me were shocked, almost shouting; they kept emphasizing the word "have to" again. I've actually been in Europe for 2 months and have hardly experienced any racism, so I wondered if it's a food that you have to eat with your hands...? So I asked people around me and searched, and it turns out that's not true at all ^^... The employee who made my last impression in the Netherlands the worst

On my second visit to the bar I was told “to move across the street as I was not welcome” the young male waiter who said it told me “he was trying to serve his guests” which meant the local people of Amsterdam. He then turned his back on me when I tried to give him my empty bottle. I was really taken aback by his rude remark as others had been so nice. I won’t return and would tell others not to go due to this.

Lovely place inside by the open window coffee and 2 Oma Bob croquettes with beautiful coarse brown slices of bread. The croquettes were tasty, warm, not hot as it should be, too bad. There was mustard, too bad no butter. Service was as usual FINE. I had not been there for at least 4 years, but I was immediately recognized by the waiter ... a plus, that's why I like to come here, beautiful nostalgic "tent" no fuss in "zithoppe"

Racist rude young bartender. Honestly if you're going to be racist you might as well put up a board saying that you are unwelcoming to some folks instead of making us go through a terrible atmosphere. The bartender told my partner he wasn't welcome inside because he had a waffle in his hand which my husband told him he intended to discard in a bin and was looking for one. It wasn't what he said then, it was his tone. Which is why we didn't know better and asked for a spot to be seated. When we asked for a drink that was highly reviewed and my husband requested to know how it was supposed to be drunk (as in with water or ice) the bartender said - with your mouth. Thereafter it was just a cold weird space and the saving grace was an older gentleman who took over. We'd ordered their beef croquettes and because we weren't feeling good about the whole situation we asked our bartender to give them to us to go. He said that they didn't do that and luckily the older gentleman stepped in and offered. My husband said aloud - you learn something new everyday and the young bartender instead of feeling any guilt got offended and was mocking us in conversation with another guest. The older gentleman who had a much kinder tone with us took over the billing thankfully and we left.
