A nice experience in a restaurant that really feels like Japan, but for two people we didn't have a particularly special meal for €150.

Delicious sushi and sashimi, super fresh!

Authentic Japanese izakaya ambiance with dishes prepared as they should be: fresh sushi, grilled fish, chopstick dishes, and delicious soups. From the open kitchen, the delicious aroma of grilled fish and meat wafts towards you. The interior and exterior are in need of some renovation, but that's precisely what gives it that typical, vibrant izakaya feel. Excellent food, pure and healthy.

A simple restaurant that serves delicious sushi and other Japanese dishes in a professional and adequate manner. Everything was as expected. We had sashimi, sushi, and miso soup for lunch, which were all excellent. Notable features were that the miso soup, as is customary in the Netherlands, was served beforehand instead of afterward, as in Japan, and that they had Kirin beer on tap, which is rare.

Arriving early but without a reservation, we found a seat at the counter. The menu is extensive, so there's something for everyone. The dishes are made to order, and their freshness is undeniable. In fact, it was very good. Good Japanese restaurants aren't cheap, and this one is no exception. The service provided by the young man and woman was both pleasant and efficient. Thank you so much for this very enjoyable and much-appreciated meal!

Food was super delicious. The ambiance takes you very close to Japan, the building and decorations makes you forget you're at the back end of a shopping. The sake was good. A place I'll visit again for sure.

Very rude and angry waitress , bring the cold and hot dishes in once . All the dishes tastes worse than many years ago . No wonder is full but no single Japanese in it to eat . Here comes ; when one dish was nothing look like the picture in the menu , without apology without a smile , she yelled to me what you expected and the picture just for reference. Totally ruined my niece birthday dinner . Will definitely not back again .

When you go in you feel like you are actually in Japan. It resembles an authentic Izakaya but the staff could be a bit friendlier. The food is ok and the portions are fine. The sake was good.

the place to go if you're craving some japanese izakaya food! although the octopus (tako su) we ordered didn't taste /that/ fresh, the tanuki's sashimi collection B, spicy tori karaage and chikuwa isobe age were very good! the bowl of rice that i got was a bit stale unfortunately. we ordered plum sake and asahi beer, both of which did not disappoint. nice atmosphere!

We sat outside as a family of four. The kids (6&7) enjoyed the dumplings and cucumber sushi and we loved the poke bowl and great variety of sushi. The kids were able to play a bit on a sunny evening in the garden while we enjoyed a drink. Perfect evening for us - thank you!

Very friendly, fast service! The food wasn't exceptional, but it was delicious and of good quality. You can sit on the terrace with your dog in a pleasant atmosphere. Thank you very much!

It was a big letdown. Food was nowhere near japanese cuisine. Flavors were bland or just off and felt more like a poor imitation than a real japanese experience. Its dissapointing to see a place calling itself japanese without respecting the taste. Not what i hoped for. I hope they take this feedback seriously and improve because right now i cannot recommend

Everything we ordered was delicious and very fresh. The California rolls, salmon sushi was nice, the spicy tuna was the best. I’d recommend trying their Jasmine tea as well. My only complaint is the lack of vegetarian options in the menu. The ambience of the restaurant is very warm and inviting and when the weather permits the outdoor area is nice too.

n: ⸻ My First Japanese Restaurant Experience It was my first time trying Japanese food, and I really enjoyed it — especially with my friends by my side. The restaurant was located in Stadshart Amstelveen. It was quite small and didn’t have much space, but it had a cozy vibe and was clearly loved by many people. I’d definitely go back! We ordered a variety of dishes to share, and everything looked as good as it tasted! (You can see our table full of colorful plates in the photo.)

We were there again yesterday. Now it has become a completely different food. Taste can be compared to all-you-can-eat. Price-quality ratio is no longer what it used to be. It's better to go to all you can eat. Too bad.

I've been here many times and I have to say it's either super good or super bad. I usually order the unagi don. On weekends it is always tasty and the service is also excellent, but every time I visit this restaurant during the week the unagi is very tough and the rice is very soggy. This time I also had large pieces of bones, which is really not possible. In addition, the service during the week is not the best. If this happens once it's okay, but it's happened too many times now that I've had to throw away half of the unagi.

The food is very good, I totally recommend it. Prices are reasonable for what you eat.

Delicious food. I know Tanuki and have always had delicious meals in the past. Both Amsterdam and Amstelveen. I haven't been there for many years and I read reviews before my visit and I was afraid it would be disappointing. Fortunately, it is still the quality I am used to. I had delicious nigiri flambéed scallop shell, sushi roll with covered flambéed salmon, Edamame beans, fish roe and the spicy tuna roll. I went alone so really enjoyed the food. I went on a Thursday evening, without a reservation. I think I sat there for an hour. Very friendly staff.

Amazingly busy izakaya with a huge menu with both warm and cold options. More interesting than your average Sushi joint, but with points of improvement on flavor. Good and friendly service.

We had lunch here with the family last Saturday. It wasn't too busy and the atmosphere was very friendly. The service was welcoming and friendly. We ordered the Tanuki's sashimi selection of 8. The yellow tail tuna was delicious. The dishes were briefly explained by the server. There were also fries for our daughter. I look forward to coming back here again.

Unfortunately I no longer come here with our friends and family. Few years ago (pre corona) this was a great place. But now it's a drama. Fish (sushi and sashimi) do not always smell fresh. Taste sometimes sour. Their “steak”, which is served thinly, has been thick, tough and overcooked on the table in recent times. The staff, especially the younger girls, try so hard. But they are barked at by the owner in front of guests. The owner, who in his Japanese outfit, has never said a kind word. Let alone made you feel welcome. Unfortunately, after the last time, when the girl who served us stood at the table crying, it was so disappointing that we finally said something about it. This was treated exceptionally poorly and unsportsmanlike that we will now no longer return and also leave this review. Unfortunately.

Great place for a quick lunch. Very tasty and so much nicer than the other places in that area. Also the interior is special and different, feels authentic.

Wow! What a nice place. Me and my friends called in last moment if we could get a table for 8 people. Luckily there was 1 available. Our seating was very cozy with a table kinda goes into the floor. I believe its called “horigotatsu”. Very neat. We had to take off our shoes for it. Food was delicious and fairly priced. Overall we had a great time.

Favorite Japanese eatery... so funny how they have created a restaurant in this place with so much atmosphere. Delicious food again, will be back soon. Everything fresh, a view of the kitchen and very cozy.

We come here regularly as Tanuki is one of the few restaurants outside Amsterdam that has Unagi on the menu. Nicely decorated, service is good, but items are regularly sold out.

Walked in during lunch and sashimi set was perfect along with an addition Hamachi plate. Super fresh!

We were walk-ins. We got there the moment they opened and asked if they had a seat available and we were helped by the staff, however the person who helped us wasn't exactly enthusiastic and seemed like they were impatient with us. However, we ordered 5 dishes and each paid around 25 euros when split in three. The food is of rather good quality and was enjoyable. The environment is absolutely stunning, from interior to exterior. I would come here again, it's a cute restaurant.

Food was not fresh at all and service was very poor. Fried oysters where the oysters tasted spoiled. Sashimi was not fresh at all. Mackerel was not raw but leavened because you couldn't eat mackerel raw which is nonsense. Hachimi was completely brown and didn't taste good at all. Skewers were dry, tasteless and not authentic at all. This restaurant used to be a really good authentic place with Japanese chefs. Now it is a place with only Chinese chefs and food whose quality is even worse than an all you can eat restaurant. When we indicated that we were not happy with the food, we were not even offered an apology. The gentleman only thought about the money. All in all really not recommended!!!

My experience at Izakaya Tanuki in Amstelveen was really substandard. We had high expectations, but everything was disappointing. What was also striking was that the business is not run by Japanese, which certainly affected the authenticity of the food. It started with the steak tasting sour, like it had gone bad. The oysters smelled so bad, it was obvious they weren't fresh. The pork belly skewers were rock hard and tasted of nothing at all, as if they had been fried for too long and then thrown tastelessly onto the plate. The biggest letdown was the Tamiko sashimi selection of 8 different types of sashimi. Fish was clearly not fresh, texture was limp, had a weird color and was totally unpleasant to eat. We indicated that the food was really not tasty, but nothing was done about it. Staff were disinterested and showed no apology whatsoever. All in all it was a terrible experience and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

This used to be a restaurant with more authentic taste in food. Don't get me wrong, the food is decent, the service is nice and friendly. But the menu and the taste is more like how Dutch people like Japanese food to be. It is not to our taste anymore.

Enjoyed lunch here with two people. I was not aware that they close at 3:00 PM. This is to take some rest and prepare dinner. It was neatly reported upon arrival, but it is good to take this into account to avoid rush work. That would be a shame. The quality of the food is undoubtedly of good quality. The color of the tuna nigiri made me suspect that it had been colored by the fish supplier. Without this doubt my judgment would have been excellent. Nevertheless, my dining companion and I were very pleased with the lunch. I myself had a well-stocked menu for €19.50. On the other side an á la carte mix of sashimi and nigiris. The environment is simple and somewhat dated, with some pieces of wood/string here and there, but it adds positively to the experience. Experienced senior service that feels like a family affair. Delicious!

I think this is an izakaya that is loved by locals. This is a Japanese restaurant certified by me as an Osaka native, and the service and food quality are at an acceptable level. No, it was delicious!

We had a wonderful dinner here. The restaurant has a great atmosphere and general setup, the service was fast with very helpful and polite waiters and the food tasted very good. We preferred to order several smaller dishes that we were able to share which allowed us to try many different things and all were very well prepared. We can definitely recommend eating here.

Unfortunately, food here has been deteriorating for years. It used to be very good. But the fish is not of good quality and there is never any innovation in the menu. Shame. But no more Tanuki for me.

The food is not worth the money. The sashimi was not fresh and cold. The rice was dry. Even the tea was not freshly brewed and tasted like metal from the thermos. Moreover, all the food was on the table within 10 minutes. Too bad because the place is cute. But the price asked is not worth it.

Pleasant evening but food overpriced and nigiri packed too hard. Also the sashimi dish of 37 euros! was disappointing, did not match the photo and description of the menu and maguro quality is very poor.

Went to Tanuki's on Monday evening. Heard a lot about it but never been before. I can imagine that it used to be very special. Well, I didn't think it was very special, but it was tasty. Delicious sushi with a Japanese beer. Nice service in a fairly full restaurant.

Delicious food. Excellent service. But clean up that garden, people. Doesn't do justice to your atmosphere inside. This gives such a wrong impression of your fine restaurant.

An amazing experience. Take off your shoes and enjoy Japanese cuisine at low tables. Everything is delicious. Opportunity to try Japanese raki. Be sure to make a reservation a few days in advance. It is a place that is known mostly by locals and not by tourists. Very easy to reach by public transport.

Very disappointed. Service was rushed off as well and not friendly/approachable. Food is overpriced since the gyoza and other stuff are all from freezer which you can also buy at oriental for fraction of the price. Only sushi is fresh made. Place is also not japanese owned

I’m regular visitor to here. Though i already knew this place is not clean and not kind or friendly to customers, i visited many times for fresh sashimi. However Sashimi and Oyster fry i had were TERRIBLY NOT FRESH AND BAD SMELL. And fry was completely cold inside. Even though i have very strong stomach i couldn’t swallow those down my throat. Tzhkune and other grills were clearly, doubtlessly abandoned long time, super dry and stiff. As owner started to clean up other tables, we tried to explain our disappointment about food, i just said a word ‘sorry’ and went away. It was so pity and unfortunate our day ruined by unpleasant Dining.

This tent is not even worth 1 star, what a terrible experience we had tonight. We had a late reservation, were placed between 2 young couples while there were 2 other more relaxed places available. Asked if we could sit there, but that was not allowed because people might still come 'walking by' (8:30 PM!!!!) Ordered food, which we had ordered before, unfortunately the squid sashimi was old, did not smell good, and was very tough, we received an answer from the new waitress that it had been very hot and that she had also smelled something. Foreign. Food was taken back without apologies. Then we got the fried oysters, the large ones were still cold inside and all of them still had visible fat from the oil. Contacted the owner about this, received an apology, and that's all. All in all, the food was far below par, the fresh cabbage on which the food is placed was dried out, the pork belly skewer was dry. The most bizarre part of the short dinner was paying, I paid in cash with a note that was more than the amount charged, and did I want any change back?!?! Of course I want that back, the food was awful and not worth a tip. With the comment from me that asking that question is quite inappropriate at all! We were told in return that the waitress had done her job well and would like to see a tip. I've really never experienced this before. This was my third time eating here, and my girlfriend more than 10 times, you won't see us here again!

I was sort of a regular to Izakaya in Gelderlandplein. I wanted to give a try this place with my family. Food was not bad, place was a bit neglected and messy, but my issue is with the service. Even though the young waitresses were nice, the elderly one was rude and unfriendly. I won’t come back.

Food is good and so is the information provided by the wait staff. The restaurant looks neglected from the outside. An update wouldn't hurt inside, especially at the entrance.

Been here a couple of times. Have always had great food here (pieces of sashimi or fish on nigiri are fresh and large, yum!), love the traditional Japanese small restaurant vibe (with tatami seating tables if you like). Service was either ok or good, depending on how busy it was, but never terrible. Many Japanese come here as well, so I guess that's a good sign of it's authenticity. Will keep coming back here!

The absolute best Sushi restaurant in the Netherlands! Food is absolutely great. Service is amazing. And the place looks really nice. The Matcha ice cream is also extremely tasty.

Messy entrance with all kinds of junk in the cupboard. Single door so that a lot of cold comes in when the door opens. Toilet that needs to be renovated. Wear spots everywhere, a garden door lock on the door and a waste bin whose lid is missing. I've had Japanese food once before and it was much tastier than here. Food is made without love or attention and looks like it has been thrown on the plate. The ice cream (tasteless) was in a soda glass. The idea of ​​a Japanese interior is very nice and the intention was very friendly and smooth. The food is affordable.
