Japanese Pancake World in Jordaan

I really love Asian food, especially unusual ones like Japanese comfort food, so I was delighted to discover such a specialized place. It was delicious. I'll probably stop by again.

absolutely appalling customer service. We came because the website advertised Japanese fluffy pancakes. When we sat down and asked about them, the waiter responded rudely instead of just clarifying. He kept pressuring us to order even after we asked multiple times for a few minutes to look at the menu. We felt unwelcome and decided to leave without ordering. As we walked out, he shouted after us and used offensive language. If this is how customers are treated for asking a simple question, it’s no surprise the place was almost empty. Respect costs nothing, and unfortunately, it was completely missing here.

It used to be good, but now they also tried to scam us by adding extra stuff to the bill, the okonomiyaki was undercooked and half of the size of what it used to be. Clean your chopsticks, ours were disgusting sticky. Be aware of what you order to drink, ours didn't come in a bottle but in a dirty glass instead and he refused to give us a bottle.

Greasy cutlery, and wasn't the worse Okonimiyaki but, ... I tried to give my family a first taste of it, but that's not it. The loo was ... thank You. No recommendation. 100€ wasted. Sorry

He advertises 2 euros per mochi outside. I decided to get two of them. Thinking I would pay 4 euros total. He pulls up the card reader and I tap my card to pay. 1 hour later I see I got charged 14 euros. Avoid this place at all costs. He is a scammer, and the other reviews confirm that.

This guy is a scammer. On pride we bought eur8.50 dumplings. We tapped and paid without checking. My friend checked his phone to see what he had be charged and it was eur28.50. I checked my phone and he had done the same to me. When we went back to him, he just said "mistake, mistake" and had two twenty notes ready to give back to us. Now I see the comments below, he seems to be doing this all the time!

One of the worst restaurant experiences I’ve had in Amsterdam. Absolutely disgraceful service. I came here specifically to try the food, but the entire experience was awful from beginning to end. First, the staff member was unbelievably rude and condescending. Since English is not my first language, he actually asked me, “Do you not speak English?” in a mocking and impatient tone. Instead of simply helping a customer, he made me feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. He also kept rushing me while I was trying to order, even though the restaurant was practically EMPTY. Apparently basic patience and manners are too much to ask here. Then came the food. The teppan-fried udon I ordered was badly burnt on the bottom, smelled strange, and tasted terrible. For a restaurant charging these prices, the quality was honestly embarrassing. But the worst part was the bill. My bill was €27, but my card was charged €37. I only noticed after leaving because I received the payment notification. I immediately went back and confronted the staff member. There was no apology whatsoever for overcharging me by €10. When I asked for my €10 back, he only wanted to give me small coins. I asked whether he could simply return a €10 note instead, and he flatly refused, again with an extremely unpleasant attitude. So, to summarize: rude and condescending service, burnt food, being rushed in an empty restaurant, and €10 mysteriously added to my card payment. What an absolute joke of a dining experience. If you eat here, CHECK YOUR CARD PAYMENT VERY CAREFULLY before you leave. I certainly won’t be coming back, and I would strongly recommend tourists—especially anyone who isn’t completely fluent in English—to think twice before spending their money here. Terrible food, terrible attitude, and a completely unacceptable payment experience. 1 star is generous.

Sad to see a once good restaurant to go down. We recently went again to this restaurant and can confirm what others wrote. Dirty glasses and cutlery, long waiting times and the food was also not good. The portions were very small and quite burned. And finally the waiter tried to rip us off - the items were correct but he put 10EUR more in the payment terminal than was on the bill. Luckily I paid with my phone and did see it directly. He excused himself and gave me back cash, but this was not really an accident.

The okonomiyaki was good, but unfortunately the overall experience at OSAKAsan was very disappointing. The restaurant was noticeably dirty. There was dirt on the floor in every corner, and the ceiling was covered with dust and cobwebs. What concerned us the most, however, was the cutlery—it was so dirty that we almost had to close our eyes with every bite and hope nothing worse would happen. It’s a shame, because the food itself was enjoyable, but the lack of cleanliness made it impossible to fully enjoy the meal.

Great food, excellent value for money, and super friendly and dedicated owners. We returned to Amsterdam after four years and really wanted to have okonomiyaki again. We also had meat skewers as a starter, which were delicious as well. We'll definitely be back next time we're in Amsterdam.

What a scam! Be careful when you pay. In our case he stated an amount and then entered a different one into the machine to tap with credit card, we only noticed later that he had charged us almost twice the amount. Further the place and the cutlery were really dirty.

We arrived at the store on a Thursday at 8 pm; it was supposed to be open until 10 pm, but unfortunately it was closed. Very disappointing.

The owner tried to overcharge us by adding an extra beer to the bill. Fortunately, we had read previous reviews and calculated the total beforehand, so we noticed it. It seems this is done intentionally. Also, the plates and chopsticks on our table were extremely dirty. I would not recommend this place.

Paid 38.30 for 9 gyoza, 2 yakitori skewers, 1 Asahi, and 1 water. The gyoza were very tasty; we had imagined the yakitori to be something different. No problem. What I do find odd, however, is that the total came to 38.30. Based on the prices on the menu as well, this CANNOT be right. The waiter also asked if I was from the neighborhood. I find it all very strange...

As we sat there eating a guy came and warned us to check our bill at the end as he got overcharged. We did, it was correct on the receipt, but when I tapped my card almost double the amount got taken from my account and I instantly raised it and the owner gave me the difference back in cash right away, saying "oh that's weird"... So just be sure to check your bill or pay in cash so you don't get shafted. Pancake was fine. Nothing to write home about.

Although the food was good, the cutlery, glasses, and plates were very dirty. The bill had extra items, which was corrected. However, when I paid with contactless, the card was rejected, and I realized I was being charged €62 instead of €49. When I asked to see the payment machine to pay with another card, they hastily corrected the charge because I asked to see the screen. I do not recommend this place; it's unprofessional and unhygienic.

Delicious Japanese food! The octopus and chicken were incredible too, I highly recommend visiting this place. You can seat outside while people watching one of the coziest streets in the city. The serves is very fast and the owner is nice man

Unfortunately, I can't comment on the food, as we didn't even get to that point. The place didn't seem very clean (the tables were sticky) and the owner was very pushy. After I repeatedly said that I'd like to look at the menu in peace with my children, the owner insisted on ordering drinks. We felt uncomfortable and decided to go somewhere else. The owner then insulted us, referring to our German heritage. My children were completely upset. We've never experienced anything like it.

We happened to walk past here and found the atmosphere super cozy, so we thought let's get something here. We sat inside and it was super cozy and pleasant; the man who works there was super nice!! And the food was super tasty too! We even ordered something for the second time! The next time I'm in Amsterdam, I'll definitely come back to eat here again ☺️

If only I could give 0 stars… The worst service you’ll ever get. After telling the waiter we didn’t want to eat there anymore because of his behavior, he swore at us and was extremely disrespectful. My recommendation is simple: don’t go there.

The owner was extremely unfriendly. In the menu there was “beef or pork” gyoza. And he said there is chicken and pork. But while we order, I said beef gyoza by mistake and he answered very aggressively and said “listen to me!” And we said “you dont need to be that mean to us” and he said “you didnt listen to me” again in a very aggressive way. They we said “ok then we dont want to eat here” and he sweared at us (F word) . I had such a thing for the first time in my life.

The tastiest, crispiest Takoyaki and Okonomiyaki I’ve ever had. Only managed one photo as it was devoured before we got a chance to take any more! The black sesame mochi is beautiful. Small restaurant but big flavours and impeccable service. The plum wine is also a must!

I ordered Authentic Japanese Gyoza with Pork (9 pcs), and a Cola. Really Really Perfect and the taste was amazing! If you don't like heavy but also want to stop your hunger, this is a place for you!

We had some delicious food as our first experience on okanomiyaki at OSAKAsan whilst visiting Amsterdam. We ordered the Takoyaki (octopus balls), beef Gyoza and okanomiyaki with drinks. The gentleman who served us was very polite and quick to take our order and the food was DELICIOUS! Would highly recommend going here. Thank you for a lovely meal and we will be back the next time we're in the city! =)

Delicious Okonomiyaki! Long sought after and finally found.

The Hiroshima-yaki has udon inside and is unseasoned. When you order gyoza, they are deep fried and topped with okonomiyaki sauce. Japanese gyoza tastes better when eaten with vinegar and soy sauce. That cost me €30. The miso was €6.50. It was tasty, but probably instant. I'm amazed they've managed to make such delicious Japanese food worse.

The food was absolutely amazing and was worth every second of the wait, the chef was also really friendly and talkative. I highly recommend this place if you want high quality fresh traditional Japanese food.

I recently spent a week in Amsterdam and the Okonomiyaki (Butatama Osaka) was one of my favorite bites from the whole trip. Try it!

Some of the best gyoza I've ever had. I tried the most popular variation on the okonomiyaki (Japanese Vegeta pancake), which included bacon and cheese. It was delicious. The edges were crispy and caramelized and the center was almost spongy. The proprietor explained that he puts the bacon on top rather than inside to achieve the crispiness.

The place has a great atmosphere, the food is delicious, and the chef is simply brilliant!

Highly recommended! Everything was delicious and perfectly seasoned. We thoroughly enjoyed it. The owner is also super friendly and explains everything very well. Simply fantastic! 👌🏽

Very nice restaurant, excellent food from the appetizers to the crepes dessert. Service more than excellent, very kind and fast! We took one crepes to share in two and he served 2 glasses of umeshu instead of 1 without letting us pay for 2. Very good price for 2 appetizers, 2 Hokonomiaki, 1 dessert, 2 beers and 2 umeshu.

We've been to this restaurant twice and the food was always excellent. The okonomiyaki is amazing, and the owner was really kind!

It is - like others mentioned - a one man show. If you are in a rush, you'll be disappointed. If you have the time, it's well worth the wait. I had the hiroshima-style okonomiyaki and it was delicious. Let it cool down for 5 minutes so you can cut and eat it more easily.

A great little restaurant. It's run by a wonderful man who serves, cooks, and serves food exceptionally well. He's cheerful and very talkative. The food is delicious, even gluten-free, freshly prepared to your liking. You have to be a little patient; everything takes a little longer, but the wait is pleasant. I highly recommend it. And congratulations to the chef!

Some of the best takoyaki and okonomiyaki my husband and I have every had! This is a one man show, the owner does everything which makes it all the more impressive. We sat outside and had a great time.

This tiny little restaurant is definitely the most authentic Japanese restaurant outside of Japan I've ever seen. If you want to indulge your palate with Japanese food, this is the place for you. The owner will be happy to give you detailed advice. He himself is also an authentic Japanese, a nice older gentleman. He's considering emigrating next year, so visit the restaurant now before it closes! I had the Japanese pancake and felt like my grandpa was cooking for me.

Last sunday we visited the Osakasan restaurant. They are specialised in Japanese Okonomiyaki. It is very hard to find a restaurant who makes this Japanese "pancake" in Europe and I was very happy to find it in Amsterdam (through Google). The restaurant looks simple basic in style, but we came there for the food, not the looks :-) And the food was great! They have 3 styles of Okonimiyaki and various toppings. The chef is very friendly and not afraid to have a chat with you. He's got great stories and gives a lot of info about the various styles and history of the food. We had Okonomiyaki in Osaka a few years ago and this is the real thing! Just like we had in Japan! It tasted amazing and we certainly will go back next time we go to Amsterdam! They also have very tasty starters and deserts. Very recommended! Unique Japanese food which you find nowhere else!

Delicious okonomiyaki! The owner was super friendly and very proud of his restaurant and the food he serves. It's hard to come by an okonomiyaki restaurant in Western Europe so I was happy to finally be able to try it out. They have Osaka, Hiroshima and even Kobe style okonomiyaki! Many toppings to choose from. I had the butatama Osaka one and it was so delicious, I can see why it's called comfort food in Japan 😊 You can take a seat outside to people watch during your meal, or sit inside. I'll definitely come back here when I visit Amsterdam again!

Food was good but 45min-1h waiting which is not acceptable. Okonomiyaki is small, for almost 20€ I was expecting at least 20-30% bigger.

Finally a decent okonomiyaki in Amsterdam. Started with a takoyaki which was amazing, followed by a great Hiroshima style okonomiyaki. Definitely coming back for more

Very happy that I can eat these delicious Japanese pancakes in my own part of the city (West/Jordaan). Both for lunch and dinner! Funny mini-restaurant, nice owner who likes to talk about food, about Japan, about China, about Hong Kong (his birthplace). A fun and above all tasty experience!

It's nice that there is a restaurant like Osakasan that serves okonomiyaki, even in different varieties. Toppings can be added as desired. Our choices, such as Hiroshima with Champions and Osaka with Champions, tasted excellent. The owner was very friendly and communicative. We do not recognize ourselves at all in the negativity from previous reviews. With our many years of experience with okonomiyaki in Japan, we think Osakasan is a must.

Unhygienic (including the owner)... dead mice that have been provisionally hidden behind cardboard plates... owner rude and charges royal prices for bad and spoiled chicken, which are therefore left uncovered next to the plate all day... I have already had food poisoning twice had the chicken burger...please people...do NOT go here...wonder it's still open?!?!

The staff was very nice and the food was tasty. We didn't fully understand the menu, but it was explained to us well. We are vegetarian and there are plenty of options. It's really worth eating here.

Okonomiyaki is such a treat, and finding an authentic place in Amsterdam was so cool! The chef was very friendly and our food was piping hot and just as good as we had in Hiroshima itself. Eat this, you won’t regret it.

Food is interesting. I had Japanese pancakes and they were similar quality the one I ate in Osaka. They have a Japanese chief. Athmoshere is not special, very cold. I will advice to put some Japanese music , some Japanese decor and make it more cosy . Service was not the best. Girl needs a better skills for ordering & relationships with a client. Pricing is ok based on NL prices.
