M'Haya in Wijk 03 Overvecht

This is the best Moroccan restaurant in Utrecht. We've been coming here since it opened and the food is always delicious. You won't find the lamb tagine as good anywhere else, and the fish tagine is also superb. The lamb chops are also top-notch. We give the staff a 10 out of 10. They're always so friendly and polite. (Just a quick note: the staff's friendliness and excellent service often reflect the chef's excellent management of the restaurant.) That's why we give Restaurant M'HAYA a 10 out of 10. It's a real shame; it's nice to go there once, but the prices are outrageous. A tasty pastry for... don't be shocked... €7, so 2 for €14, that's really too expensive. I also don't really understand how this is possible. It could be €3.50 each. Still expensive then, but not unaffordable... Dutch prices to keep us away from the place???

Had a delicious meal. The soups/milkshake were top-notch. The tagine pot is actually meant for one person, but we could easily eat out with just the two of us, and it was deliciously full of flavor! All in all, a great little spot to grab a nice meal after a day of shopping when you don't feel like cooking!

Good service, I had been there once in the evening. I ordered a burger with fries and there was nothing to complain about. There is also a nice Somali man working the service. We had a good time.

Unfortunately, I must now take my previous experiences seriously. I have encountered unfriendly staff multiple times and have given the business a chance again and again with good intentions. However, today was the last straw for me. At 8:15 AM, I stood in front of a closed door, whereas according to the opening hours, the business is supposed to be open at 8:00 AM. At the same time, I clearly saw staff walking back and forth inside. I then waited for well over fifteen minutes, knocked on the roller shutter several times, and tried to make contact by phone. Despite the fact that staff were present, no one answered. As far as I am concerned, this is no longer an isolated incident, but a sign of how this business is run nowadays. What once started as a bakery I enjoyed visiting because of the good quality has, in my experience, turned into a disappointing and chaotic establishment where customer friendliness and service are nowhere to be found. I have given this business the benefit of the doubt several times, but for me, the limit has been reached. I will not be returning here, nor will I recommend this business to my loved ones. Ironically enough, I was eventually able to simply buy the bread I wanted at the supermarket next door—a supermarket that, mind you, has its bread delivered by a different bakery. For me, it is a sad state of affairs, literally and figuratively. My advice to others: think carefully before you spend your time and money on this.

I come here/order here very regularly for the minced meat tagine, msemen, and minced meat panini. Very tasty, friendly staff.

Bad food, bad treatment, and the order under the dining table is disgusting. Nothing good, and it doesn't even stop at one star.

Please adjust the opening hours so that you don't make a customer drive by for nothing if they want to visit your business.

Lovely place in Overvecht with a fantastic selection. The M'semen, Harcha, and fresh Moroccan tea or cookies are always freshly made and perfectly flavored. An absolute must-visit in the neighborhood for artisanal treats and a good cup of coffee or tea.

Went here for the first time yesterday and again today. Minced meat tagine excellent. Half chicken with fries felt like a whole chicken. Service was top-notch. And they are open until midnight. You can also get breakfast until midnight hahaha. For 4 people including drinks, less than 50 euros.

It takes an outrageously long time. Do not order.

Tasty food and affordable, but not high standard.

Today, I bought msemmen, bagrir, and stuffed rolls with chicken and minced meat, among other things, for €32. It turned out there was a huge piece of plastic inside the minced meat roll. I turned around immediately and took the roll back to the store. I returned the stuffed rolls and received a refund for them. And an apology. So, resolved. That is okay, but very meager for something so embarrassing and something that really shouldn't happen. The products must be guaranteed to be hygienic and pose no danger to public health.

I am a regular customer at Mhaya Restaurant and have been coming here with great pleasure for a few months now. So far, I really have nothing to complain about. The food is always delicious and the service is friendly and efficient. Additionally, there is a nice, cozy atmosphere in the restaurant, making you feel at ease immediately. In short: a place I am happy to keep coming back to.

Have come back several times for the Harira; it's delicious and very affordable too. We are also very curious about the rest of the dishes. Highly recommended!

We recently had breakfast at Mhaya. We had ordered 3 Moroccan teas, but my sister's tea never arrived despite asking three times. Meanwhile, staff walked past our table several times while taking new orders at other tables. When paying, I politely asked if that one tea could be removed from the bill, as we never received it. Unfortunately, the staff member reacted unfriendly and kept insisting that we should just take the tea with us (he even counted down the time until the tea arrived), even though we had already finished eating and I indicated that I did not want this and did not want to take hot tea with me. Mistakes can happen, but I did not find the way this was handled professional. Offering an apology and providing the tea on the house or removing it from the bill would have been more polite in my opinion. Unfortunately, this did not result in a pleasant experience with the service.

Delicious homemade food for a cheap price! Rarely found these days

The food was genuinely really not good; think of really stale bread. Some employees were friendly, but the majority were really not friendly, as if they are forced to work. It is really not recommended; I will never come here again. I have also advised my friends and family not to eat here. Unfortunately, but oh well. That concerns the past.

I visited M Haya restaurant today and had an extremely disappointing experience. I ordered two platters, which were shockingly underwhelming—just two tiny pieces of meat, a few fries, and a small portion of salad. The food quality was terrible, and the taste was honestly awful. For €40, this was completely unacceptable. The portion size, presentation, and especially the flavor did not justify the price at all. It felt like a complete waste of money. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

I have a gift card from my employer that includes mhaya. However, at the checkout, I was asked to pay by card because the gentleman has no idea how that thing works 😌 I don't think that's polite. I'd say brush up on your team.

Went back for dinner today after a particularly good experience yesterday. The bisara soup is highly recommended, as is the harira soup. I'll be back to try more dishes. On November 29, 2025, I came back for dinner again this time, having the Moroccan salad and the loubia soup (white beans), followed by the kefta dish. Very delicious.

I went to this restaurant for breakfast with my family. Unfortunately, the experience was very disappointing. When I ordered, the waiter came over and made a gesture that I'd ordered too much, as if he meant I might not have enough money to pay. He then started laughing and told his colleague, laughing, while my children were there. I found that very disrespectful and uncomfortable. We came to eat in peace, but we didn't feel welcome.

The service is very bad, otherwise the food is tasty.

What a disappointment, this place has gone downhill!!! Harira soup, or rather, pepper soup, I've never had such disgusting harira anywhere. The salad was just soggy, the rice was hard, and the fish was dripping with oil. Ugh! Never, ever again.

Well, I thought I'd pop in for breakfast at Mhaya... I go there often. It was quite busy, and there was only room left where families are allowed to sit. There wasn't anywhere else to sit. A staff member came to tell me it's for families, to which I replied, "There's no room here anywhere..." I had to leave because this was a family table. Another colleague came over and told him the customer could just stay. That's how you keep customers; if you turn them away, you might lose them. And I also found it a bit inappropriately rude... Otherwise, I'm fine with it.

I ate here a few weeks ago with my Moroccan colleague on his recommendation. I'd come here occasionally to get some tasty chicken legs or a sandwich, but I'd never had a full lunch before. And honestly… it was very good, and I don't understand the negative reviews here. I did mention that it sounded a bit noisy. That's partly due to my hearing, but it was also just a pleasant atmosphere. So it wasn't a complaint, but it was just something to be aware of. I'll definitely be back.

Besides the fact that this store is unhygienic, the staff is unsatisfactory. We didn't get the correct order, and when I pointed this out, the employee said that was what was ordered. Not at all. Be warned and don't risk food poisoning.

Don't eat here. You'll get a cold Kapsalon that they don't even put in the oven, with the cheese slices still whole instead of melted. It's ridiculous. Never again, be warned.

You need to stop using leaf blowers. Every morning and evening, you don't even clean up the mess you blow away. Before 7:00 AM and after 10:00 PM, it's absolutely illegal to make noise, let alone use a leaf blower. Just use a broom and dustpan; that way you'll actually be doing something positive and not adding to the noise by constantly blowing and spreading messes.

Stopped for a quick lunch, we chose harira and lentil soup. Delicious, served nice and hot, fresh bread with it. Eating like at home. Only tables and menu are sticky, so better to clean in between and make sure there are napkins. Otherwise nice, quick basic lunch. Next time try other dishes and pastries.

Ordered here via home delivery a total of 3 times. You order something and then wait 40 minutes for a call saying they don't have something from your order. Then put it in the goddamn app. I also ordered today because I thought it would go better. After 30 minutes I get a call to say they don't have my entire order. I paid €21 to get something that cost €10.50 and was also mouldy. And I told them in the app not to ring the doorbell because my child is sleeping. They ring the bell 3 times!!! The delivery person was certainly not 16+. I try to contact the store and it goes straight to voicemail. The next day I go to the store. They just laughed at me even though I still had proof. A man takes it inside. Comes back again and gives me €5!!!!!. I'll never come here again. I'd rather cover my mouth with sand than ever order here. A big 0!!!!

It has now been 5 years since I was there for the first time. I come once every six months, but what a decline in the last year. Flies everywhere, dirty old tables, poor layout. Seems like the place has been sold, lots of new people. Especially the man behind the counter. All very rude. Every other place in Kanaalstraat is better than here.

Unfortunately I won't be going there again with my family. Food arrived cold and dishes were unfortunately dirty. We asked for a new one and we got it dirty. Tables were not clean and we had to ask twice for the crockery and we finally got it after half an hour. However, it's a shame that things are deteriorating so much.

Kefta with egg and tomato, sweet mint tea, fried eggs, delicious bread, fresh orange juice, everything was delicious! Heerlijke bakkerij met heel schappelijke prijzen. Het personeel is ook erg vriendelijk en behulpzaam.

Van 8:00 tot 00:00 kan je bij deze bakkerij/restaurant terecht voor de allerlekkerste Marokkaanse gerechten. Een traditioneel ontbijt met eieren, olijfolie en brood wordt inclusief een kopje muntthee geserveerd. Alles in de bakkerij wordt met liefde bereidt en dat merk je ook terug in de gastvrijheid van het personeel! Wil je een moment terug naar de traditionele Marokkaanse keuken dan is M'Haya een aanrader.... Besaha
