Delicious food, immediately upon entering you are greeted by a warm welcome, nice ambiance and attractive atmosphere. Service super friendly, attentive and competent; and delicious food. A beautiful, modern twist and contemporary embrace of Surinamese cuisine, but above all an excellent (and tasty) ode to the diversity of the South American country & culture. We will definitely come back more often!

Ate at Papa Aswa last week. Unfortunately, the welcome was not particularly warm, which was probably due to the fact that one extra person had come. I tried to change the reservation via the app, but that didn't work. Little understanding was shown for the fact that I had also contacted someone by telephone in the afternoon to change the reservation, but could not reach anyone. Fortunately, an extra folding chair was eventually added. The food at Papa Aswa was, as always, beautifully prepared and tasty. Compliments to the chefs!

A beautiful location in Amsterdam East. The atmosphere is good. We had a sweet waitress who very patiently explained the menu. The food was delicious again. We will definitely come back.

What I like is that they don't offer the standard meals. Their telo is of a high level. I'm already looking forward to the next visit.

To be honest, I expected more but the prawns were very tasty 8+. The fish platter also had the prawns on it. Visplatter: The butterfish in sweet soy sauce less so. My girlfriend thought the bangbang fish wasn't too bad. All in all I will definitely go back for the gambas.

The restaurant looks very nice and the service is very friendly, but I was very disappointed with the food. The chicken (main course) was difficult to eat. The coating of thick BB sauce made the meat difficult to distinguish from the bone and difficult to remove. There was also a bone splinter in the chicken meat twice. The taste was sweet and not very subtle. I thought the casava fries had little taste. The pom (starter) was tasty.

Fantastic food in a good atmosphere with friendly staff. My mother turned 91 and the bigi pokoe was used for her.

We were with a group of 5. It was a warm welcome, you experience and taste Suriname both in culinary terms and in atmosphere. As a Surinamese you are a little more critical of the flavors of another Surinamese. But everything was very tasty. With a group of 5 you can also share many individual things with each other. That is where share dining really comes into its own. Nice dishes on the menu that also take you back in time. Fried rice with kipper, fried rice with cod, fisi, cassava fries, crispy chicken, skapu, and more. The desserts were also very tasty, we had the bojo which is warmed up and served with a scoop of ice cream and the fiado. The presentation is very nice and if you can't finish it you can just take it home. The cocktails were very originally thought up, you also found Suriname there. Products such as borgoe, orchade, markoeschello. The service very attentive and the round of the chefs at the tables is very much appreciated. We enjoyed it.

As someone who has Surinamese roots and lived in Suriname for 13 years, I am not easily impressed... but eating at Papa Aswa felt like coming home. The flavors are authentic, rich and prepared with love. Every bite brought back memories of Suriname: from the fragrant rice to the perfectly seasoned chicken and the rich, full-bodied sauces. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, as if you are joining family. The staff is friendly and committed, and the service feels genuine. Papa Aswa knows how to bring a piece of Suriname to the Netherlands, without making concessions on taste and experience. Here you not only taste the food, but also the culture and the feeling of home. For anyone who wants to experience Surinamese food as it should really taste - this is the place. I will definitely come back, with friends and family. Highly recommended!

We were four people and we all had different dishes. Literally everything was delicious. Really recommended!

We enjoyed it! 1 tip, perhaps some warming containers because the noodles and long beans get cold quickly. Highly recommended starter: roti chicken and main chicken in BBQ. Delicious!

Food was delicious, only small portions and quite expensive for such portions. Total food and drinks for 2 people for 185 euros. The cocktails were also quite expensive. So open your wallet when you get there. But tasty.

Papa Aswa is a gem! Delicious food: started with the chicken tacos and shrimp in jowo sauce, both really delicious! Then the visi combination with white rice, chicken with BBQ sauce and casava fries as a side. Also delicious! Finished with the bojo, where the rum flavor was surprisingly delicious. Service was really great!

Last Saturday I wanted to treat my girlfriend, her sister and brother-in-law to a delicious Surinamese dinner, based on the positive reviews. Upon arrival we were not welcomed and had to search for someone to help us. We were shown to our table in a rather shabby restaurant. Another friendly lady said she would take our coats to the cloakroom, but she didn't return until we had been sitting for almost 10 minutes. Anyway, first ordered a drink: two cocktails and two beers. Everything was delivered neatly, only a beer was missing. After we had made several attempts to call someone and ask where the second beer was, the waiter said: "Well, it was ordered one after the other, you see" (she showed it on her iPad). After about 10 minutes the remaining beer indeed arrived. In this case, a good start is 'half work'. The ladies ordered Telo Bun and the gentlemen a Taco Fowru and Bakabana on a stick. As a main course then Sotu Fisi and the Beef Meti, but none of the dishes have any connection with Suriname. Fortunately, I have eaten plenty of Surinamese dishes, but if this had been my first experience, I would not have been impressed. In short, a messy place, sitting too close together, disorganized service and very mediocre food. If we go to get it, we'll go to Warung Mini, where it tastes at least 10x better and really Surinamese!

We had a delicious meal at Papa Aswa again. The atmosphere was warm and cozy. As always, the food was delicious! The service was excellent. Our drinks were refilled quickly and we were given good recommendations. In short, a great evening!

We visited Papa Asha twice while visiting Amsterdam. The staff of this lovely restaurant were gracious and kind. The entire experience was a delight. The food of Surinam at Papa Aswa is a true delight with a bit of spice.

We had dinner here on a weekday evening. Reservation was necessary (€15 pp) will be deducted from the total price. A really beautiful place, friendly staff with a passion for their work. We spoke to a lady who really did this with passion in addition to her full-time job and you notice that in all the staff. The chefs came by each table after dinner to ask if everything was to your liking. Lots of choice on the menu, as Surinamese we naturally compare many of our home-made dishes in terms of taste and preparation methods, so in our opinion some dishes could have had a little more flavor. On the other hand, the presentation and layout of dishes was absolutely beautiful! Cocktails (krastientje/lychee) deliciously prepared. In short, a very beautiful, unique business with dedicated staff, on behalf of and for the culture, but welcome to everyone! Recommended! #nospon *They are also looking for staff so that the top floor can also open and they can continue to provide the same service!

We had a reservation for 9:00 PM. We had some small starters and 2 main courses from the menu. Everything was tasty except the large fish dish. The shrimps were tasty, but the butterfish tasted very lala. The lady said we could always order dessert and side dishes. When we finished eating some time passed before they came over. I indicated that we would like to order dessert, but the kitchen was already closed. What a shame! So we weren't able to taste that. The cocktails were also very tasty. Music was great. My coat was hung behind, but was offered to another guest! So that could be better. We were the last to leave the tent. Took a few more photos. It is highly recommended for once! The distance is quite far if you come by public transport

What a treat in the area. The interior is gorgeous with plants everywhere and a vibe that’s truly feels like you’re being transported. The owner is just absolutely lovely and the chefs made creative, and delicious dishes! The hospitality was beyond compare in the Netherlands (the chefs even came out after our dinner to meet everyone). To top it off, the drinks were some of the best I’ve ever had in Amsterdam. Cannot wait to return, and cannot recommend this family establishment enough!

Food was bland. Heri heri bun fish was hard to find, the bite was missing. Shrimp were okay, braise beef with boulanger, pieces of beef could be a bit thicker. Main course for 2 people was fish, pfff just not. In terms of temperature it could have been better. I thought it was a shame, especially for that price. Service was perfect not to mention the cocktails.

I cannot rate Papa Aswa's food because it did not get that far - despite my reservation and down payment. And that won't happen again given the very poor service of this restaurant. I wanted to change the originally reserved date but that didn't work. The website is simply bad and the message that you can cancel via the website appears to be incorrect. Cancellation and messages by email or telephone remained unanswered (too long). In short, I paid € 30.00 and that only caused me a lot of annoyance about the complete inaccessibility of papa aswa. Papa Aswa is very good at collecting money, but the associated service is not provided. I have now received a response from Papa Aswa and they have refunded my deposit. So service is still provided.

Had a delicious meal at Papa Aswa's! Tasty Surinamese dishes in a shared dining concept, excellent portions, tasty and affordable. Also a cozy atmosphere with nice employees and Surinamese music in the background. Cassava fries, Her heri, skapu meti and fried rice bokking are definitely recommended!

In my opinion, I don't think it's Surinamese at all, if you want to use your own creativity that's okay, but don't call it Surinamese. Baka bana on a "stick" e.g. fawaka with that stick?? And I don't think it tastes traditionally Surinamese. Very unfortunate that this has to affect the image of the delicious Surinamese cuisine in this way. For real Surinamese food, I will from now on go to Roopram, Warung Mini, Nieuw Albina or Rotishop Gita... they keep it "Surinamese". Just don't do this... shame about this kind of thing again... And oh yeah... take half a day before you go here, because your food will only be served after an hour and it will be cold (and it won't taste Sranang/Surinamese at all) All those post(s) from social media are completely wrong...

Incredible food and service! This is definitely one of the best restaurants I’ve been to in Amsterdam. The cocktail that comes in the coconut was also amazing. The only thing I wouldn’t order again is the fried cassava - there was nothing special about them and tasted too oily. I’d rather replace them with one of the bites dishes.

Surinamese cuisine at its best. In this case it means Javanese Creole and Hindustani flavors. Presentation is almost perfect. Almost too beautiful to eat. Hospitality and warmth are top notch as usual. Highly recommended.

I loved the food. A bit much, but you can also order less. What I also like is that allergens are clearly indicated on the menu. Nice place and friendly service. The food was served very beautifully and gracefully. It's a shame that the toilet is all the way upstairs as far as I know because if you have difficulty walking or are in a wheelchair this is not practical. And €19 for a cocktail is a bit steep🤭but all in all it was a nice tasty evening...worth repeating.🌹🥰

Went with the family last Sunday. Nice tent. A bit cramped perhaps (tables close together) but cozy! Service was also fine. Shared dinning in Surinamese style is also a nice concept. Had some bites to share and everyone had a plate. The taste was quite good, but I would call it more Surinam fusion (e.g. prawns in a kind of chili sauce). We also had the rib eye (medium/rare). Only received it medium/well.. very unfortunate! The shrimp tasted quite nice but I see no reason to leave the skin on (only the tail is fine). The fried fish also tasted fine, but in my opinion it could have been filleted better (it wasn't at all). It's quite dark inside, so having to remove bones yourself is quite irritating. Casave and heri fries could have been cooked a little more, but I think that's personal. Don't take a virgin cocktail either...same price as with. All in all, we will definitely try it again, just no rib eye and no fish (as long as it is not filleted).

Had a very nice experience in a Surinamese restaurant that tries to elevate Surinamese cuisine to a culinary tour de force. Traditional dishes are transformed and luxuriously presented, making it an instant experience. And then the taste: that was absolutely amazing! Everything tasted good. The service was very friendly and what was very nice was that we first received an explanation at the table about the origins of the restaurant, which makes everything an experience and makes the visit more alive. We thought it was a pity that it was very busy, which meant we often had to wait a little too long for our dishes and that the tables were on the small side. So if you order some snacks you will soon run out of space on the table. But overall a pleasant atmosphere with nice Surinamese background music. The design has been carefully considered. Nice chairs to sit on and the atmosphere is not too noisy so that a conversation is still possible. It's also nice that the two chefs occasionally enter the room and have a chat with the guests, explaining the food if you wish.

A bit noisy when it's full, the service more than makes up for this and the food journey. What a delight and so much to choose from that you MUST go back

The culinary twist of Surinamese cuisine, but especially the preservation of the authentic flavors, delicious!!! Nice that the chefs also came out of the kitchen to make a round. Warm welcome and service from start to finish. Beautiful ambiance. The cocktails are delicious. We had Krastientje and Motjolibie. We had to taste these just because of those names. Food was delicious. If you go there, do it with an open mind and not with your grandmother's taste in mind, because she doesn't work there.

Went to Papa Aswa with seven people from the East and Drenthe. The food was excellent and you can also order the cocktails without alcohol. The atmosphere there is just right to relax and enjoy the delicious food! And the service was the bomb.! The chefs also came for a chat after dinner, which was very pleasant. This was the best meal we had in Amsterdam. The recommendations of the staff were excellent. The service, cocktails and food were excellent. Presentation of the food was exquisite. Best lamb I have ever eaten. A diverse choice of food which was all prepared perfectly. Easy to share plates and enjoy such a cultural mix much like the country Suriname. Soo soo good. We were really looking forward to eating at this new restaurant in our neighborhood. Unfortunately, we found the price, quality and service to be inadequate. The tables are very close together, so you can/must literally follow the conversations of your neighbors. Each table also has to be sold several times per evening, because neighbors were informed that their time was up and whether they wanted to leave. We did not complete the two hours 'we were given'. We ordered a bottle of wine, which we had to remind a staff member three times to bring. The starters were on the table before the bottle of wine, which we saw waiting on the bar for 20 minutes. When it was delivered, no effort was made to pour the wine into our glass, the wine cooler and glasses were simply dropped on the table with the starter? Very strange. The starters were tasty, but the portions were completely out of proportion to the price. Really mini snacks for too much money. The main course was brought out very quickly afterwards, which we found disappointing, but taste is personal. As a vegetarian there is almost no choice, fish is limited to 1 extremely salty dish, which means I had to walk to the tap all night. In short, we were very disappointed and subsequently received a voucher for three starters (snacks), two 'plates', a few fries and a bottle of wine for €130. That wasn't worth it.

Finally, we were asked twice to leave within a minute because the next customers were already ready.......we will not return.

Great Surinamese restaurant. But different than usual. The dishes are a joy to look at. And the chefs remain true to the authentic flavors of typical Surinamese dishes. Highly recommended. Tiny minus. We sat at the round table in the back near the cloakroom behind a pillar. As a result, we missed the connection with the rest of the restaurant, which was less pleasant. But the food didn't taste any less!
