Delicious food. Lovely atmosphere.

The place was attractively decorated. Sufficient attention from manager, staff and chefs. Heartfelt. Inventive varied menu. Tasty food.

The waitresses are very attentive, and at one point the chefs visited every table to ask about their experience. Unfortunately, my family and I didn't particularly enjoy the Surinamese food; we found it quite spicy, more so than we're used to.

Last week me and my friend/colleague stumbled upon this place. When it first opened I put it on my list to visit, but forgot, so it was a super pleasant surprise. Walking by in the rain, looking in, we just both knew we had to go in!~ The atmosphere is amazing, it just feels tropical and exactly like Suriname. The music, the people, the plants, and smells, it's just so nice. The service is good, the waiters are very friendly, but unfortunately I had three things I was less than enthusiastic about. One, we were told when we entered there was only space for us for an hour. However, when brought to the table we didn't get a menu, nor our drinks order taken, and we had to wait for atleast 10 minutes before either happened, this stressed me out, because as I wrote, we were told we only had an hour. All in all, everything went on 'Surinamese time' which in and off itself kind of fits the whole restaurant, but it didn't fit the fact we were told we only had an hour. In fact, as it turned out when we got the bill, an hour and a half later, they had freed up another table, so we didn't need to leave at all within an hour, problem was noone had thought to inform us. So I was stressed throughout the dinner, as everything was taking quite long, and I wasn't aware we had no deadline anymore. The second thing I didn't love was how the cocktail waiter tried very agressively to push me to buying 3 cocktails all at once. He was funny about it, but I still felt pressured in a way that I didn't appreciate. Especially since cocktails were up to 17 euros each, which, considering I only drank mocktails (no alcohol). In hindsight, I really think this was kinda of ridiculous. These mocktails were nice, but 17 euros over the top expensive. Considering the average cocktail price (with alcohol) in Amsterdam ranges from 8 to 20, where 8 is typical for a normal bar and 20 is the most expensive option, 17 is really at the high-end range. And this kind of translated into my final complaint. We came with 2 people, we had 4 starters to share, 2 mains and 2 sides for 2 people, we were full at the end, and the food was delicious... we each had 2 cocktails and I had 1 non-alcoholic beer and a bottle of water. The bill was a whopping 168 euros. 175 when I added a tip (because the waitresses were just so nice and friendly) But that price just blew my brain to be fair. Going out for dinner, I expect to break 100 euros in 2025, even with 2 people, but 168? Man... it's just too expensive for a restaurant that serves premium versions of streetfood in, what is a very calm outside of downtown neighbourhood. I love the food, atmosphere and service of this place, but today I'm going out for dinner again, and I simply won't be going there. Because at that price point I can go to for example, Indrapura on Rembrand and have their most expensive rice table and I'll have money left over to go for drinks after. It's for this reason I didn't give them 5 stars across the board. They're very over priced, despite everything being great.

Another delicious meal. The flavors, Surinamese food like you won't find anywhere else. Beautifully presented plates, the service, the atmosphere. Plantain on a stick. Pom in filo pastry. Chicken masala in a small roti plate. And did I mention the taste? Delicious! You can feel the love that goes into everything!

I had high expectations for Papa Aswa, but I was quite disappointed. I had made a reservation for three people, which cost €45 (€15 per person), but we ended up showing up with two. When I paid, they only deducted a €30 reservation fee instead of €45. It must have been in the fine print somewhere, but I really don't like this. If I had known, I wouldn't have tipped.😠 Furthermore, I didn't find the food particularly special. In my opinion, some dishes were far too greasy and overly seasoned.

One point of attention: the restrooms. They could be cleaned more often and checked for this.

I've been twice now. I won't be going a third time. The atmosphere is nice. The food was especially disappointing the second time; it was mediocre, and I spent €60 per person. What really annoyed me was the service. The staff are friendly, but they constantly ask to take the plates away, even when there's still food on them. You feel so rushed. Work on this; it's not fun as a guest.

We had made a reservation for five. We had to pay a €15 reservation fee per person, which is then deducted from our bill. One of us had the flu, so we arrived with four people. We ordered some small dishes but insisted on ordering the whole thing at once. We could have been told that the two people who ordered the fish dish already had the same shrimp in it. Two of us ordered the sotu fisi combo, which was way too salty and strong. When it was brought, the plate was put in front of the wrong person. I said, "No, that's for someone else." "But I'll just put it down and you can sort it out." I didn't want to make a scene, but that was simply not possible. At 9:00 PM, we were told we'd been given half an hour extra, but we really had to leave. We left and had to go to the cash register to pay, but no one was there. Three of us waited outside, and when our table companion came out after half an hour to tell us he was still waiting to pay, someone ran after him to ask if he was leaving. Then came the bill: the €75 we'd already paid hadn't been deducted from our account, but only €60. After my table companion had to show his bank statement to prove he'd actually paid €75, the manager was called in to tell him we wouldn't be getting a refund for the €15 reservation fee for the sick person. We also decided not to leave a tip. Meanwhile, it was 10 p.m., and from outside, we could see that the restaurant we were supposed to leave at 9 p.m. was still empty. Papa Aswa, so this was the first and last time for all four of us.

Nice restaurant and atmosphere, but not everything is equally delicious. The massalabites were truly amazing, but I didn't like the taco; the crispy taco with the texture of long beans and meat wasn't a great combination. The BBQ sauce is way too sweet, which is a shame! The Javanese sauce, on the other hand, was delicious. The meat preparation really needs to be improved for the price they charge. The desserts are really good, but so small I just burst out laughing. I don't expect the size of the "drie graefjes" (Three Counts), but this was absolutely ridiculous. The service is very friendly but slow. We also had to wait far too long between the appetizer and the main course. And maybe they could improve the ventilation because you smell quite a bit after you're outside. I would definitely go back and order very selectively because some things were really delicious. I'll skip the desserts, because they're way too small for the price you pay. One last thing: if you make a reservation, ask for a table upstairs so you'll be more spaced out. Downstairs the tables are way too close together, especially the 2-person tables.

The setup and the staff give this place a super vibe. Friendly, helpful and conversational. The smaller bites and mains were both very tasty and quantities were very decent. Did not try any fancy drink but we went for the “local” beer. Enjoyed the evening. Menu is simple - they keep It uncomplicated. Flavours are plentiful and friendly but not overpowering.

Beautiful location and friendly service, but as a guest with celiac disease and lactose intolerance, my experience was disappointing. My dietary needs, which had been specified in advance, weren't properly considered. I also received fewer dishes than the others but still had to pay the full price, and I still developed symptoms at home. Furthermore, I received no response to several emails.

Papa Aswa Surinamese Restaurant, a charming Surinamese restaurant where you can enjoy a variety of dishes with authentic flavors. The shrimp, steak, and rice with Bokoe are highly recommended. The mango dessert was also delicious and highly recommended. The four of us arrived on Wednesday from Sail on a boat with King Willem-Alexander, riding his green dragon. We received a warm welcome. Despite not having a reservation, we were able to join two friends who were already there. The service was excellent, and the owner himself even stopped by our table. He enthusiastically shared his story about how he started out in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. His hospitality and traditional costume, including a beautiful Alakondre necklace, added to the charm of the experience. One highlight is the lamb dish. Unfortunately, the lamb was barely seasoned and lacked the deep flavors you normally expect from Surinamese cuisine. Furthermore, the menu could be more extensive, and the presentation of the dishes on the plate could use more attention. Pros: - Authentic Surinamese dishes (including shrimp, steak, and rice with Bokoe) - Mango dessert is highly recommended - Friendly and personal service - Hospitable owner who shares his story - Atmospheric ambiance with traditional elements - Desserts and some main courses are considered pricey - The lamb dish was underseasoned and tasteless on the inside - The menu could be more extensive - Plate presentation deserves more attention Papa Aswa offers a warm and flavorful experience in a relaxed atmosphere. The combination of personal service, hospitality, and authentic dishes is definitely worth it. Surinamese cuisine isn't my favorite, but Papa Aswa's food offers a unique twist while still retaining the original flavors. I could eat here every week. The service is also excellent, the concept is well explained, and the staff is friendly!

Papa Aswa had been on my culinary list for a while. Strangely enough, it was always fully booked, which is a great sign in itself. We finally managed to make a reservation for six people. What a beautiful green ambiance, excellent and surprising food, beautifully styled, and cozy tropical music. The welcome was warm, the service incredibly enthusiastic, and what a story behind this concept—super unique. After the main course, the chef and sous-chef took the time to greet all the guests and explain their inspiration and their original idea to fully express the diversity of Surinamese cuisine. As far as we're concerned, this was a great success! We were all very enthusiastic and have found our new hidden gem!

Quite an experience! A quality restaurant in a friendly atmosphere. A little corner of Suriname in Amsterdam. The service is attentive, the presentation of the dishes is original, and the food is delicious.

I arrived as a walk-in and was seated upstairs. Unfortunately, it soon became apparent that there was little to no service upstairs, something I hadn't been told beforehand. Throughout my visit, I had to call down several times just to speak to anyone. For a restaurant with such high prices, I found this completely unacceptable. When I pointed out that the service was lacking, I was told "there's no service upstairs." If I had been told this beforehand, I wouldn't have been seated at all. With these prices, you should expect normal service; it's not a fast-food restaurant. To make matters worse, the bill listed a tea for €7.50, while the menu listed it at €4.20. When I asked about it, I was told it was a "special" tea. However, the choice wasn't presented as such, and the menu didn't mention it either. When I finally went to pay (after our table had been completely cleared), no one came upstairs again. I had to call down again myself, and instead of sending a staff member, they shouted back from downstairs: "If you could come down, that would be great." Following such a bad experience with the remark "from now on, you have to make a reservation" felt downright rude. All in all: poor service, poor communication, and absolutely no experience commensurate with the price point. Not recommended.

At the end of 2024, we visited Papa Aswa again. We had a very disappointing experience with the hostess. We had made a reservation, but due to unforeseen circumstances, part of our group arrived late. While waiting for them, we debated whether to order already or wait a bit longer. We explained our dilemma to the hostess and asked if we could extend our meal. Her response, however, was extremely irritated and unfriendly; she curtly stated that this was absolutely impossible. I asked if we could perhaps be moved to a higher table. This was again rejected. The hostess stated that this was absolutely impossible. Again, in a very unfriendly tone, which we found downright rude. When I cautiously inquired what would happen if we hadn't finished eating by closing time, she curtly replied, "We'll make sure you're done." This comment made us feel rushed for the rest of our visit. Although we managed to finish within the reserved time, the hostess's tone and attitude clearly affected the atmosphere at our table. When paying, we wanted to share our disappointment with another colleague. Unfortunately, they ignored our request. Although the other staff were very friendly, the hostess set the tone, and this is a reason for us not to return to Papa Aswa. Before posting this review, I attempted to contact the restaurant, but I haven't received a response. This suggests they don't value customer service. I will therefore not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Highly recommended! But it's changed a bit compared to the previous location. The atmosphere at the previous location was a bit warmer. The telo fries used to be handmade, thicker, and tastier. Now they're thinner, don't look handmade anymore, and the flavor isn't as good as it used to be. Well, that's compared to the past. Maybe I should let go of the past; everything changes ;). If you come here for the first time, you'll have a wonderful experience with friendly staff and good food. The presentation of the food remains a highlight! The pom is new and delicious. The baka banana on a stick is still delicious, and the ginger beer is authentic. In short, highly recommended!

But above all, the food is excellent (especially the trio of fish to share with homemade fries)!!! As well as the cocktails! Not to be missed, but on weekends, remember to book. At the last minute I was able to reserve a spot. It is apparently always full there. The food is good and tasty, but the small bites (as a starter) get too much honor and fame. They are on the expensive side in terms of price and in my opinion they should take a good and critical look at the recipe. Main course is fine and sufficiently fresh and tasty. Food is good and tasty but the price is a bit too high. Presumably the rent is very high in that place.

When you've been hearing for years that you really have to go to Papa Aswa, you decide to take the plunge. And yes, it was worth the trip from Noordwijk. The atmosphere is incredibly relaxed, the entire restaurant enjoys it when a birthday person is put in the spotlight and the food... Where do I start? With every dish I hoped it wouldn't work out. The food at Papa Aswa is so incredibly delicious! What did I like best? Simply everything I ate yesterday 😀 I can speak highly of the service, they were sweet, calm guys. Papa Aswa, see you soon!

We went with five people and we all give five stars. Delicious food, great service, nice atmosphere. Definitely recommended and we will definitely go back again.

The service was truly top-notch; everything was served with attention and a smile. You can tell that hospitality is truly at the heart of the concept here. The food was fresh, tasty and truly delicious. Well-known Surinamese dishes were presented here in a way that I have never tasted before; innovative, yet authentic. Definitely recommended for those who love surprising combinations! Reservations are definitely recommended, because you don't want to miss this gem. Parking was also ideally arranged in the covered garage nearby, which is a real plus in Amsterdam. And a special thanks to owner Tiffany, thanks to her personal attention and warmth, this was an evening to remember. In short: we will definitely be back!

I celebrated my birthday at Papa Aswa and everything was perfect. The service, the food and the atmosphere. The cocktails are so good! At dessert they even came to sing and dance with the team 😍 I can recommend everyone to eat at Papa Aswa.
