Friendly and good service, delicious, tasty, colorful food.

We had a wonderful meal at Papa Aswa. Upon arrival, we received a bowl of freshly baked, warm chips. The flavors were surprisingly delicious and delicious. The taste buds were truly challenged. Not your typical Surinamese fare, but a whole new level. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, the portions were excellent, and not to mention, the service was fantastic. I highly recommend Papa Aswa for a meal. Until next time!

Papa Aswa had been on my culinary list for a while. Strangely enough, it was always fully booked, which is a great sign in itself. We finally managed to make a reservation for six people. What a beautiful green ambiance, excellent and surprising food, beautifully styled, and cozy tropical music. The welcome was warm, the service incredibly enthusiastic, and what a story behind this concept—super unique. After the main course, the chef and sous-chef took the time to greet all the guests and explain their inspiration and their original idea to fully express the diversity of Surinamese cuisine. As far as we're concerned, this was a great success! We were all very enthusiastic and have found our new hidden gem!

Surinamese cuisine isn't my favorite, but Papa Aswa's food offers a unique twist while still retaining the original flavors. I could eat here every week. The service is also excellent, the concept is well explained, and the staff is friendly!

I arrived as a walk-in and was seated upstairs. Unfortunately, it soon became apparent that there was little to no service upstairs, something I hadn't been told beforehand. Throughout my visit, I had to call down several times just to speak to anyone. For a restaurant with such high prices, I found this completely unacceptable. When I pointed out that the service was lacking, I was told "there's no service upstairs." If I had been told this beforehand, I wouldn't have been seated at all. With these prices, you should expect normal service; it's not a fast-food restaurant. To make matters worse, the bill listed a tea for €7.50, while the menu listed it at €4.20. When I asked about it, I was told it was a "special" tea. However, the choice wasn't presented as such, and the menu didn't mention it either. When I finally went to pay (after our table had been completely cleared), no one came upstairs again. I had to call down again myself, and instead of sending a staff member, they shouted back from downstairs: "If you could come down, that would be great." Following such a bad experience with the remark "from now on, you have to make a reservation" felt downright rude. All in all: poor service, poor communication, and absolutely no experience commensurate with the price point. Not recommended.

The mutton was too tough. The fried rice was too dry and lacking in flavor. The food was beautifully presented, but the taste was disappointing. The heri heri was also unusual. It tasted good, but fried. I expected more. The atmosphere was pleasant, though. The staff was also friendly.

At the end of 2024, we visited Papa Aswa again. We had a very disappointing experience with the hostess. We had made a reservation, but due to unforeseen circumstances, part of our group arrived late. While waiting for them, we debated whether to order already or wait a bit longer. We explained our dilemma to the hostess and asked if we could extend our meal. Her response, however, was extremely irritated and unfriendly; she curtly stated that this was absolutely impossible. I asked if we could perhaps be moved to a higher table. This was again rejected. The hostess stated that this was absolutely impossible. Again, in a very unfriendly tone, which we found downright rude. When I cautiously inquired what would happen if we hadn't finished eating by closing time, she curtly replied, "We'll make sure you're done." This comment made us feel rushed for the rest of our visit. Although we managed to finish within the reserved time, the hostess's tone and attitude clearly affected the atmosphere at our table. When paying, we wanted to share our disappointment with another colleague. Unfortunately, they ignored our request. Although the other staff were very friendly, the hostess set the tone, and this is a reason for us not to return to Papa Aswa. Before posting this review, I attempted to contact the restaurant, but I haven't received a response. This suggests they don't value customer service. I will therefore not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

My compliments on how Surinamese food is presented here in such a representative and contemporary way. You taste the tradition, but with a fresh, modern twist. Highly recommended! But it's changed a bit compared to the previous location. The atmosphere at the previous location was a bit warmer. The telo fries used to be handmade, thicker, and tastier. Now they're thinner, don't look handmade anymore, and the flavor isn't as good as it used to be. Well, that's compared to the past. Maybe I should let go of the past; everything changes ;). If you come here for the first time, you'll have a wonderful experience with friendly staff and good food. The presentation of the food remains a highlight! The pom is new and delicious. The baka banana on a stick is still delicious, and the ginger beer is authentic. In short, highly recommended!

A gem! Warm welcome, very friendly staff taking the time to explain the menu to tourists like us! Tropical atmosphere, the setting is really nice, away from the hustle and bustle of the city center. But above all, the food is excellent (especially the trio of fish to share with homemade fries)!!! As well as the cocktails! Not to be missed, but on weekends, remember to book. Classic prices for Amsterdam restaurants.

The staff is very friendly. Unfortunately, the drink service is extremely slow. We had our appetizer before our glass of wine arrived. Afterward, we ordered a whole bottle. It was only by sheer luck that it arrived just before the main course. The food is very good and tasted excellent.

At the last minute I was able to reserve a spot. It is apparently always full there. The food is good and tasty, but the small bites (as a starter) get too much honor and fame. They are on the expensive side in terms of price and in my opinion they should take a good and critical look at the recipe. Main course is fine and sufficiently fresh and tasty. Food is good and tasty but the price is a bit too high. Presumably the rent is very high in that place.

My wife and I, both born and raised Surinamese, have been waiting for years for a restaurant that reflects the true Surinamese cuisine and Papa Aswa is literally the perfect example of that! We are so happy with both the restaurant and the staff! I have not eaten Surinamese food for years because of MSG that is added everywhere, it is deadly for your health. At Papa Aswa I can eat consciously and healthily and the real Surinamese ambiance is an asset.

The food tasted good, too bad the portions were so small. Nice names thought of for the different dishes and drinks. Plates were nicely decorated. We found it all a bit on the pricey side. Tried different drinks and we found them okay. The staff was friendly. There was extra attention for the birthday boy.

After having a fantastic meal here in Zuidoost, I was happy to hear that they are back. We had to wait 2 years for it... But it was so worth it! It doesn't happen often that a restaurant that I am looking forward to so much, really lives up to its name. We opted for the chef's menu, so we were surprised. The bites started off strong, with the best tacos, delicious heri heri buns, the juiciest sausage and a beautiful roti roll. Wow, what a start. Then the main courses: chicken, beef in jowo sauce, and the fissa, the party of fish with butterfish, scampi and something else that I have forgotten the name of. As side dishes we had the nasi and rice with cod, and their fantastic heri hero fries and cassava fries with mayonnaise with madame Jeannette - how I have missed them the past few years! One was even tastier than the other, we were also almost dancing with happiness at the table thanks to the nice music. Really sublime! Then we got an assortment of desserts to finish and that made the evening complete! The cocktails were also all delicious, their papa aswa beer was very much appreciated and the ginger beer was said to be the tastiest ginger beer that this person had ever drunk. Really such a big recommendation and I hope they will stay for a veeeeeeery long time!

Finally, we had dinner at Papa Aswa. Their ginger beer is truly divine! We started with some appetizers. It was all well presented and very tasty. We also ordered a bami, but unfortunately this was forgotten. Not that it mattered, because I was quite full. With 3 cocktails, 3 ginger beer and a tonic it was still € 229.00. I thought this was on the expensive side, because we actually had appetizers. Despite the price, it was a true experience and very friendly staff.

I am very pleasantly surprised by the addition of this restaurant! Beautiful decoration and very good service. The lady who helped us clearly explained the concept and its origins. The dishes are authentic but with a modern twist. There was nothing that wasn't tasty. Especially surprised by the bakabana, buns, and the fish. We will definitely come back here more often!

Ate here last Sunday and had a very nice experience. A summary: ✅ Warm welcome: Our coat was accepted at the door – very polite and attentive. ✅ Welcoming guidance to the table with an enthusiastic waitress who had a sense of humor and could provide good advice. ✅ Drinks: Cocktails are on the pricey side, but there are also delicious homemade non-alcoholic alternatives. We took two: one with coconut and one with ginger – both on the sweet side, but tasty. ✅ Nice start: There were chips on the table upon arrival - nice to have something to nibble on right away. ✅ Menu was already ready - no waiting time, which is nice. ✅ Dishes: Chicken taco: absolute favorite - perfect balance and that sweet and sour red onion finishes it off. Roti: tasty, but in my opinion it could have been a little more traditional (slightly less fried). Fried banana: tasty, but not very special. Pom in a crispy jacket: good taste. Later ordered eggplant with beef: surprisingly sweet combination, but certainly successful. ✅ Everything arrived at the table warm and with a smile, and at a pleasant pace. ✅ Atmosphere: the restaurant was pleasantly full, with nice music in the background and cheerful, attentive service (which is really unique in Amsterdam!). ✅ Space: sufficient distance between tables, which made the experience extra pleasant. 💶 Price: dishes are on the pricey side, but the portions (especially main courses) are generous and well filled. In short: highly recommended! We felt welcome, well looked after and had a delicious meal. I would love to come back again.

We visited this restaurant as a group of 4 adults and 2 kids. From the beginning, we clearly told the staff that we wanted to order food for the kids first, and placed orders for buns and some sides. However, while three of our own dishes arrived relatively quickly (buns), the kids were left waiting for almost an hour, despite us asking multiple times. Each time, we were told the food was “coming,” but it took another 10–15 minutes after each check-in. The explanation we were given was even more frustrating: they said the items we ordered for the kids were sides, and they usually serve buns and tacos first, followed by mains with sides. So apparently, the kids had to wait an hour because they were following a sequence, one that makes no sense when customers explicitly request something else. And they explained this without the slightest sense of embarrassment. Even our sides arrived after an hour, before the mains. Then, once we had finished the sides, the mains were served, totally disconnected timing. On top of this, the food itself was extremely greasy, and the meat didn’t smell good, which made it hard to eat. None of us could finish our main dishes. Overall, it was a very disappointing experience, both the service and the food. I definitely wouldn’t recommend this place.

Today we had dinner with 6 people (nl/sur), fantastic service, very atmospheric and delicious Surinamese fine dining. small portions, but that means you can taste more. Really atmospheric, nice people, and delicious food. The cocktails are also recommended. Chefs even came to ask how the experience was, very thoughtful. Quite pricey, but definitely worth the money. Tables are a bit cramped, but cozy. Definitely come back again. (reserve in time)

Nice restaurant, friendly staff and nice atmosphere. Tasty dishes but quite pricey. They are more like tapas, cocktails are very expensive and the dessert is very small for the price (€11.50 small piece of cheesecake). All in all, I paid €100 for a few small dishes, 2 desserts, a bottle of water and two lemonades. Not convenient with public transport. Nice to have been there once, but next time I will choose something different when I am in Amsterdam.

Ate at Papa Aswa last week. Unfortunately, the welcome was not particularly warm, which was probably due to the fact that one extra person had come. I tried to change the reservation via the app, but that didn't work. Little understanding was shown for the fact that I had also contacted someone by telephone in the afternoon to change the reservation, but could not reach anyone. Fortunately, an extra folding chair was eventually added. The food at Papa Aswa was, as always, beautifully prepared and tasty. Compliments to the chefs!

A beautiful, modern twist and contemporary embrace of Surinamese cuisine, but above all an excellent (and tasty) ode to the diversity of the South American country & culture. A beautiful location in Amsterdam East. The atmosphere is good. We had a sweet waitress who very patiently explained the menu. The food was delicious again. We will definitely come back.

To be honest, I expected more but the prawns were very tasty 8+. The fish platter also had the prawns on it. Visplatter: The butterfish in sweet soy sauce less so. My girlfriend thought the bangbang fish wasn't too bad. All in all I will definitely go back for the gambas.

The restaurant looks very nice and the service is very friendly, but I was very disappointed with the food. The chicken (main course) was difficult to eat. The coating of thick BB sauce made the meat difficult to distinguish from the bone and difficult to remove. There was also a bone splinter in the chicken meat twice. The taste was sweet and not very subtle. I thought the casava fries had little taste. The pom (starter) was tasty.

We were with a group of 5. It was a warm welcome, you experience and taste Suriname both in culinary terms and in atmosphere. As a Surinamese you are a little more critical of the flavors of another Surinamese. But everything was very tasty. With a group of 5 you can also share many individual things with each other. That is where share dining really comes into its own. Nice dishes on the menu that also take you back in time. Fried rice with kipper, fried rice with cod, fisi, cassava fries, crispy chicken, skapu, and more. The desserts were also very tasty, we had the bojo which is warmed up and served with a scoop of ice cream and the fiado. The presentation is very nice and if you can't finish it you can just take it home. The cocktails were very originally thought up, you also found Suriname there. Products such as borgoe, orchade, markoeschello. The service very attentive and the round of the chefs at the tables is very much appreciated. We enjoyed it.

Fantastic food in a good atmosphere with friendly staff. My mother turned 91 and the bigi pokoe was used for her.

We were four people and we all had different dishes. Literally everything was delicious. Really recommended!

We enjoyed it! 1 tip, perhaps some warming containers because the noodles and long beans get cold quickly. Highly recommended starter: roti chicken and main chicken in BBQ. Delicious!
