I had dinner here yesterday with my daughter for her birthday. We had a delicious meal and enjoyed wonderful cocktails. The staff is very friendly and the service is good. The music is great; they really turn it into a party for you on your birthday. It is highly recommended. Do make sure to book in advance.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ What an amazing experience at Papa Aswa! The atmosphere is incredibly cozy and you immediately feel that genuine Surinamese hospitality; it feels like being welcomed with open arms. The food was delicious. In fact, after the bites, we were actually already completely full. That says enough to me: truly homemade food, prepared with love and attention. The cocktails also get a 10/10; nice and unique! 😉 I would also like to give a compliment to a young lady from the wait staff. I had asked for her name, but unfortunately, I forgot it. She gave us excellent service and took the time to explain the menu. Even though I have been to Papa Aswa several times before, I found that very nice and thoughtful. Because it was my fijari, they really made it something special. The whole team came by with firework candles and sang a nice song. That made the evening extra special and unforgettable. I celebrated my birthday at Papa Aswa and it really felt like it was my birthday. Super sweet staff, food arrived quickly; we mainly ordered bites. I was full pretty fast. I shared the main course with my partner; THE FISSA (fish plate with shrimp) was delicious! It was quite a lot, so we took the rest home. Definitely recommended to come back for dinner. Nice and close to home! The atmosphere was great, lovely that Surinamese music in the background sounds like 🥰 you feel like you're in Suriname. My partner didn't want to leave yet because the playlist was just so good hahahah. I would say go experience and taste it for yourself sometime.

We had a nice meal, a good atmosphere, and friendly service. However, I do think the food is very expensive for what you get. The dishes were quite small in proportion to the price. Additionally, we felt rushed a bit, as the next guests were already waiting for our table. That made the experience slightly less relaxed.

Pleasant atmosphere, beautiful decor, nice staff. An extra plus is that, despite the crowds, the chefs take the time to go around the tables and strike up a conversation with the guests. Very disappointing experience. We came with a group to celebrate my girlfriend's 50th anniversary. Upon entering, we saw that other tables were being festively surprised with music and a candle. That is why we had also asked if something could be arranged for my girlfriend. We were told that this would be taken care of. However, after receiving the drink tokens, we had to wait over 15 minutes before someone took our order. Eventually, we had to approach staff ourselves. The drinks still did not arrive. Upon inquiry, it turned out that the order had never been forwarded because the send button had not been pressed. Mistakes can happen, but ultimately we only received our first drinks almost an hour after entering. We then ordered the food immediately, but that also took over 45 minutes. Moreover, the order did not arrive complete, and the birthday girl herself had to wait even longer for her dish. Unfortunately, the food was also disappointing; the meat was tough and overcooked. After the long wait, we ate it anyway because we were simply hungry. What was particularly disappointing was the lack of attention and service. No one came by in between to ask if everything was to our liking. Staff shortages were given as the explanation, but tables next to us did receive their food and drinks much faster. As a result, we felt we were not taken seriously and were not welcome at all. At the end, music and a candle were brought out after all, but at the same time as several other tables. That made it feel impersonal, especially since it was a special anniversary. My girlfriend, who is Surinamese herself, had specifically chosen this place to celebrate her anniversary here. That is precisely why this experience was extra disappointing. When we lodged our complaint, the manager offered apologies. Unfortunately, he came across as very insecure and had to consult with his boss on the phone repeatedly. The first “solution” was free drinks on a future visit. That felt completely inappropriate after such a bad evening. Only later did they agree to remove the drinks from the bill, but since we had only had one drink each, we felt that was insufficient. When we indicated that the overall experience was not worth the amount, they even threatened to call the police if we did not pay in full (minus the drinks). We found that truly absurd. In our view, this restaurant has little sense of service or hospitality. It seemed most important that we paid. For us, this was a very disappointing experience, and we will not be returning.

I don’t even know where to begin. If you’re considering coming to this restaurant.. DO IT! I can’t remember the last time I’ve had food this good! Everything was perfection..from the food to the decor to the staff to the owners. This restaurant has become my must stop everytime I’m in Amsterdam. I’d give 100 stars if I could. Truly, the food is to die for. I’d eat here everyday if I could ❣️

I saw a good review of this restaurant some time ago. It was the perfect occasion to go here for my partner's birthday. Last Saturday, the time had come. The atmosphere in the restaurant is good, the staff is friendly, and the dishes look beautiful. All the starters were lukewarm. The main course arrived before we had even finished the starters (also lukewarm)... 45 minutes later we were standing outside... finished. So much food in such a short time. No desire whatsoever for dessert; instead, I felt more like a number than a guest who was supposed to be entertained. A disappointment. After an email (so I deliberately didn't check social media), they didn't respond. A "success formula" aimed at making as many shifts as possible per table. Once is enough, never again.

Yesterday morning, my husband and I arrived home after a wonderful three-week trip through Suriname. How wonderful is it to conclude such a journey in the Netherlands with dinner at Papa Aswa? We had made reservations two months in advance, so we were really looking forward to it. And to be honest: it started off great. The food was delicious, the atmosphere pleasant, and it felt like a perfect ending to our trip. However, there was already a small downside in the evening. I have celiac disease and must eat strictly gluten-free. The Pom was listed on the menu as gluten-free, but was served in a nice little bowl that turned out not to be gluten-free. Consequently, the dish was still not suitable for me. A shame — because this is so easy to fix by either adjusting the menu or making the bowl gluten-free, for example using cassava flour. But where things really went wrong was with the service. We had booked a time slot back then, but to be honest, we had completely forgotten about it. We were sitting there eating in a relaxed manner, exchanging stories about our trip, and enjoying ourselves thoroughly. If the waitress had simply reminded us of the time slot, there would have been no problem at all. We would have taken that into account. Instead, things suddenly went very differently. When we wanted to order a cup of coffee after dinner to finish off, we were asked to leave in a particularly blunt and unfriendly manner. In fact, it felt as if we were literally being kicked out of the place — even though the restaurant was full. It was embarrassing and uncomfortable, and really ruined the whole evening. When paying the bill, my husband brought this up. The response? An apology, but somewhere in the back at the cash register. To him, that felt completely insincere. The moment was already ruined. The feeling of being sent away in the middle of the restaurant and then receiving a sorry “off-screen” doesn't make up for it. What should have been such a beautiful conclusion to a fantastic trip unfortunately ended in disappointment. And honestly, I don't know if I will ever be able to convince my husband to eat here again.

A restaurant that commands respect, featuring food from all Surinamese cultures. A true Surinamese culinary delight: a feast for the eyes with every round. The food was truly delicious and absolutely worth a repeat visit. The waitstaff receive a solid 10/10 from me without a doubt. Even changing tables went smoothly and pleasantly. The music was exactly to my taste: pleasantly present, but never obtrusive. There is so much to say about the food. Everything was super tasty, fresh, and prepared with care. The authentic Surinamese character was absolutely not lacking, even though the dishes had been given a modern twist. My compliments for that. I am already looking forward to the next time to try something new again. I even ate dishes I hadn't had in almost 30 years (flavors my wonderful mother used to make). That really gave me a warm feeling inside. As a lovely conclusion, there was also a festive moment because it was my special day. A truly wonderful surprise. Super cozy, super delicious. We were welcomed hospitably, and despite the busyness, the service was great; the staff understood us well and served us perfectly. We (four people) ordered six delicious, visually stunning appetizers. Divinely tasty and artistically presented with care. Then the main course: lamb ribs, which seemed to have an Indonesian feel to it, and was delicious again. Moksi meti, Beef meti, and a trio of salted fish. Served with delicious nasi, cassava fries, and heri heri fries. I can't believe there was even room for dessert 😄. The chef came by for a chat afterwards. I think that is a lovely custom. You really need the energy for that after a long day of cooking. It was a lovely evening. Highly recommended for anyone who loves Surinamese cuisine but wants something different from the standard Surinamese menu (which isn't to be sniffed at either, mind you), wants takeout, or wants to be done within 45 minutes. This was a beautiful, full-evening program.

Atmosphere is fine and cozy, service even better. Your seating is for 2 1/2 hours. Enough time to order, eat, and dine. As for the food; unfortunately, I really didn't notice anything authentic about the food. Nothing Surinamese in terms of taste or experience. More of a place hyped by social media that looks amazing but isn't. If you want truly authentic Surinamese flavors, go to Warung Mini, Brasa, Rams, or Roopram. It was fun and cozy to experience here once, however, it is certainly not a place I would return to a second time for the flavors of the food. At most, I would return for the atmosphere and service, and accept the food as a bonus. We spent almost €60 per person.

A very fun and surprising experience! A tropically decorated restaurant with a warm welcome; upon entering, the board featuring famous Surinamese places immediately caught our eye—a lovely, recognizable touch. We arrived early but were already seated. The chefs came by personally, which made it even more fun. The cocktails had funny, themed names. The dishes were beautifully presented and very tasty: familiar Surinamese flavors with a modern twist. The service was prompt and friendly, and the music was at a pleasant level. Definitely recommended for anyone looking for a different Surinamese experience!

Some people prefer a more traditional, simple presentation and lower prices. Personally, I believe that good Surinamese food deserves a beautiful presentation without compromising quality. They do that really well here; chic yet truly tropical in style. The food is very good, better than at many other tokos I have been to, and they also have a number of traditional Surinamese dishes that you don't find everywhere, such as bokking. I really liked the rice dishes. Tasty rice and well-fried, not soggy or sticky. The portions could have been a bit larger considering the price, and because it is fun to share the dishes. The atmosphere is cozy and relaxed. Compliments to all the staff; everyone genuinely pays attention to you as a guest. However, I do miss that real Surinamese kick a bit. The extra chili we asked for contained a lot of vinegar. I missed the pure Madame Jeanette pepper, sambal, and ketjap on the table. Additionally, it would be nice to see saotosoep and telo terie on the menu, for example. I did find most of the dishes to be well-seasoned. I would have liked the meat dishes to have a bit more spice/masala/gravy, and larger portions of everything; that would make it more authentic. But, definitely recommended nonetheless!

Papa Aswa was a lovely experience. The place has a great vibe! I felt the service was a bit inattentive - we waited a long time for our order to be taken and no one checked in on us after food was served. I think the food could be slightly more refined - it was quite fried-focus and oily - BUT it was honestly great and soooo flavorful. I will definitely be back! Would be really nice to go with a group to be able to try all of the dishes!

Great place. Especially those starters. We thought the sharing dishes were fantastic. If you want to eat here and go out afterwards, bring a clean set of clothes. I am definitely a fan of the spicy food. But my company had to enjoy the smell of my clothes all evening.

Yesterday, we dined at Papa Aswa in Amsterdam with a group of 8 people, and what a wonderful experience it was! From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed incredibly warmly. The service was truly top-notch: attentive, quick, and with a smile. The food was delicious; everything we ordered was fresh, flavorful, and clearly prepared with care. Even with such a large group, everything ran smoothly, and our dishes were served right on time. The atmosphere was warm and cozy, ensuring we had a truly lovely evening together. It is certainly a place we would love to return to. Highly recommended!

The prices are too high for the small portions. A beer (small glass) costs €5.70, a dessert €12, a minuscule piece. I am willing to pay a high price, but only for a reasonable portion. The pom was too dry, more cake-like instead of moist. My pom was served lukewarm to cold. The rest of the food is tasty. Would I eat there again? I don't think so. The location and atmosphere are excellent, by the way, and the hospitality too. Fast service. Nice and tasty, but in my opinion very overpriced.

What a place Papa Aswa is. From the moment you walk in, you immediately feel that the work here is done with passion. Everything served is full of flavor, fresh, and clearly prepared with care. You can taste that they don't take the easy way out here, but that there is real love and expertise in the kitchen. Dishes are rich, spicy, and perfectly balanced, exactly as they should be. What makes it extra special for me is the experience surrounding it. The service is attentive and personal without being intrusive. They think along with you, laugh, and you feel genuinely welcome. That makes the difference between just going out for dinner and an evening that stays with you. As far as I'm concerned, Papa Aswa is not a standard restaurant, but a place where atmosphere, quality, and hospitality come together. Very atmospheric restaurant and friendly staff. However, some dishes are really on the pricey side. I find two pieces of chicken for €25 very expensive. That is without side dishes. Just 2 pieces of chicken. The dawet is delicious, as are all the starters and the tiramisu.

Food is tasty, cocktails too sweet for our taste, expensive overall. The staff keeps pushing you to order way too many items, refused to serve tap water, and kept pushing for dessert even when we couldn't finish the main course. This attitude made us uncomfortable from the start and ruined the experience.

The restaurant itself had a wonderful atmosphere, was beautifully decorated, and the staff were great. However, we expected more from the food. The appetizers were very tasty, but unfortunately, they weren't really warm anymore. We chose beef meti and lamb for our main course. The steak was cooked through, even though we'd requested medium. We then received a new piece that was almost completely raw. We couldn't eat it. The lamb was also almost raw inside. Unfortunately, this was a huge disappointment, as we couldn't enjoy the main courses. The dessert, however, was very delicious. It's a shame they didn't look for a solution afterward or perhaps even remove a dish from the bill. We ended up paying €175, which we thought was a great price for the quality.

Fantastic concept, delicious Surinamese dishes with a fresh twist. Very innovative and delicious! The only downside is the upstairs tables. If you're unlucky, you might overlook a huge, illuminated staircase in the middle. My tip for the owner: put up curtains.

It was just a shame we were limited to the 2.5-hour time slot. This was communicated when we made the reservation, but we hadn't really anticipated it. We would have loved to have stayed at the table for a longer time. I can definitely recommend Papa Aswa.

At the table, the attention to detail is striking: beautiful tableware, matching cutlery, and stylish decor. The Surinamese ambiance is everywhere, and the warm cassava chips as a welcome snack are a delicious start. The menu lends itself perfectly to shared dining: Surinamese as the foundation, with a modern twist. Don't expect classic Asian store flavors, but be open and try them. Favorites were the fluffy bakabana on a stick and the cassava fries. The dessert menu is also surprising and enjoyable. The presentation is top-notch! Of course, there's always room for improvement😌: the service is friendly, but I missed the proactive sales (drinks, extra sales!😀) and storytelling at the table: explaining and sharing the great concept and Surinamese hospitality. I also missed that extra bit of flavor in some dishes (lamb and fried rice), though that's a personal preference, of course. A beautiful, creative, and cozy restaurant with great music and incredibly friendly owners who are a great friend! We will be back! Lobi!!!! Go eat!!!!

We were there with 10 family members for a birthday party. With this number, you're forced to order the chef's menu, and that's where it all went wrong. You get a standard menu with only the appetizers being Surinamese. Noodles were too salty. One large fish with its head on. Soggy chicken on the bone. Red, tasteless sirloin steak. You have no choice; it's not authentic Surinamese. You mention in advance that one person has difficulty walking, so you get a table downstairs. If you need to use the restroom, you still have to climb the stairs. We also sat in a corner where the door was apparently open because the staff were hot pacing up and down (staff shortage). The birthday boy was hypothermic, so there was no warm Surinamese vibe. We may have had high expectations because of social media, but no, we won't be back. We paid almost €1000, and that's definitely not worth it for what you get. The owner is comfortable in Suriname. But she definitely has some work to do at Papa Aswa. The birthday girl is feeling sorry and has a stiff neck because she really wanted to celebrate her birthday at Papa Aswa's. BTW, there's a lot of people deciding what you have to eat, but it's definitely not worth the price.

A cozy, tropically decorated restaurant. A bit cluttered upon arrival. We had delicious drinks, fresh coconut, dawet, and markoesa. The appetizers, telo bun, sapi wojo, patu, and sara sara, were delicious, and we had seven main courses for four people, which was quite a lot. I found the beef meti a bit tough. The desserts, bojo cheesecake, and dawet crème brûlée, were exceptional. Friendly staff. A busy Papa Aswa is definitely worth a visit.

Food is tasty esp. chicken wings, though nothing overly special. Tacos came out a bit cold. Main issue though was that we were pushed to order 2 starters person, plus a main, plus a side each, and a vegetable. A side of rice or noodles is 8/9 euros -- the main is just a meet (4x lamb chops for example), and no tap water is another 10. Really felt like the server was trying to jack up the bill, also pushed for us to order everything at once rather than wait and see. In the end 70 euro per person for Surinamese food, seems a bit expensive to me. Atmosphere downstairs looked nice, upstairs was more plain and empty. After food arrived, server basically did not pay anymore attention too us. Also maybe ventilation needs to be fixed cloths smelled like deep fry/oil after we left.

I celebrated my birthday with my partner and in-laws, which made the evening extra special. Enjoying good food together, cheerful music, and a relaxed atmosphere. Just how a night out should be.
