I so wanted to enjoy eating at the Old Soul. Unfortunately all the food we ordered was tasteless and lacked depth. Was expensive for what it was too. Cant fault the staff though, who were very attentive and nice. (Though so nice I didn’t want to say I disliked the food!) Hopefully we just choose badly from the menu.

The food was good, not overly large portions, but the idea is to combine different dishes. Lots of flavor. The service was friendly and helpful.

When we went there seemed to be exactly two people working: a lady in the kitchen and a younger lady doing the tables. It was very busy and they were doing their best, but because of this it all felt a bit chaotic. The server was very sweet and apologetic though and she did well considering so she was on her own and it was so busy, so I give it 5 stars anyway. But something to bear in mind. For the food - I went with a vegan friend who was unfamiliar with Surinamese food and she enjoyed it. The dishes didn't precisely line up with what I expected from the names/descriptions, but that aside, the food was good and had a wholesome vibe. We came for dinner. The lunch menu looked good.

Stopped here for lunch to try some Surinamese food for the first time. I was craving some vegetarian food and this hit the spot. The roti roll was perfectly spiced and the soup was very filling.

We loved The Old Soul. Have not eaten Surinamese before - tried the €35 pp tasting menu and a Surinamese beer. Absolutely delicious, especially the tempeh, rice and pickles.

I should have come here sooner! Delicious food, friendly and fast service, reasonable prices, and a cozy setting.

I had high expectations! But unfortunately: tables were a maximum of 5cm apart, so we practically all sat at one table, very cozy...but of course not the intention. A private conversation with your partner is out of the question. If you had to go to the bathroom, the neighbors had to move their table too (and then just hope you didn't sweep something off someone's table). The absolute low point was that the heating wasn't working and it was icy cold outside. We were eating with our coats on... 😑. There was one electric heater, and it was blazing at maximum, to no avail. At least mention this beforehand (upon arrival) and try to ease the pain a bit (hot chocolate, a blanket... think of something fun or playful). The service is very friendly; that's not the problem. The food was decent, but charging €16 for a small plate of stacked carrots and fruit with a "rich" tomato sauce...without any garnishes seemed a bit crazy to me. All in all, a disappointing experience, the seating wasn't comfortable. Not a relaxing experience. Brrr. I get the feeling this place is a bit overhyped. I do appreciate that there are still people who want to put vegan on the menu, though. Because places with (good) vegan food are pretty hard to find. And Surinamese Vegan is absolutely brilliant! Now all we need is a good execution!

It was very cold inside. When I asked if they had a blanket or if they could do something about it, the answer was no. And it was crowded with no space between the small tables. The food was okish but due to the cold and cramped conditions it was disappointing.

The food tasted good and was healthy. But it was overpriced for what it was, and although the staff were nice, they were a bit on the slow side. Might drop by again for lunch takeaway as that seems a bit better priced, but would not return for dinner.

The Old Soul has some incredible vegan food. I had the Pom & Patty and the mango passion fruit cheesecake. Both were delicious!

I never really write reviews, but I just had to post one this time. I ate here yesterday, and it was absolutely fantastic. It's a super cozy and inviting place with friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere. But the food is the highlight, folks. Every dish tastes lovingly prepared and lives up to the restaurant's name. It's food with soul. Don't expect a standard meal or culinary extravagance; the menu here is all about happiness, family, friendship, and a sense of home. I'll definitely be back.

Charming but tasteless, unfortunately. Well-intentioned, but unfortunately: the dishes had neither crunch nor flavor. The dumplings were soft balls of dough, both main courses simply a few vegetables. Very little seasoning, little flavor. Nothing special and not worth repeating.

We celebrated our mother's 50th birthday here, and it was a wonderful experience! 🎉 The atmosphere was warm and cozy, the food delicious and surprising. It was the first time we'd eaten Surinamese vegan, and it was a truly new experience. Everything was carefully prepared and incredibly tasty. Definitely recommended for celebrating something special or just enjoying a delicious meal!

Mateeeee. This place is the best. Top vegan food in Amsterdam in my opinion but who am I but a nobody. Unfortunately I did not get the chefs name but she was a lovely lady and honestly I felt like had my mom’s food. Stay blessed, stay busy.

This was some of the best food we had during our whole stay in Amsterdam! The Old Soul was recommended to us by a local since we were staying in de pijp and are both vegetarian. This place really feels like you have been invited into someone's kitchen and their mum is cooking for you (in the BEST way!). I couldn't believe that the food was completely vegan, it was so full of flavour and really comforting. The (presumably) owner and chef is lovely and clearly puts a lot of love into her dishes <3

The best Surinamese restaurant in Amsterdam! Definitely for vegans. But definitely also for non-vegetarians. We pick up something here at least once a week to take home. Or eating in is also fine.

I ordered Her Heri. The oysters are too salty in my opinion. Half a spoonful of yam, and the bottom was already visible upon opening the container. The restaurant didn't look hygienic; perhaps a snapshot.

Great, simple dishes and relaxed and friendly vibe. Soto was too salty though. But would really recommend the roti roll. Great deserts!

Unfortunately, a disappointing experience at this vegan restaurant. Mediocre service. The nice young man did his best but made a significant mistake by forgetting that my wife has an allergy. It happens, you know. With the exception of the soup, the food was cold/lukewarm, or at least not warm enough. The main course also lacked flavor. The atmosphere was drowned out by a loud gentleman who was having a long business conversation with the owner. The noise level was intrusive and, in my opinion, inappropriate for the other guests. So, the food was not good, with mediocre service and a bad atmosphere. Not recommended.

For vegetarians, it can be difficult to find a tasty, vegetarian Surinamese meal when eating out. I'd often walked past this place and am so glad I finally dined there after years. On a Friday evening, two of us were able to be seated in the cozy restaurant without a reservation. We started with a saoto (sauce) and a satay. Both dishes were delicious. The satay came with a generous portion of peanut sauce, and the saoto with two types of sambal (spice) that complemented the dish beautifully. The roti roll was well-filled and very nicely seasoned. The sopropo (sour lentil) was very interesting. We ordered too much and took the leftovers home, where we were able to eat everything the next day. The staff was very friendly and professional. I highly recommend it.

I ate here tonight, and what a disappointment. The waitress was friendly, but unfortunately, she wasn't very knowledgeable. The sparkling water was gone, and the Pinot Grigio was undrinkable. The dumplings were bone dry and looked like bagels. I pointed this out immediately and didn't eat them. There was never a response. Except for non-verbally; when I later went to the restroom and walked past the open kitchen, I was expertly ignored. The okra main course was fine, but far too much of the same. Hard wooden chairs.

A woman-owned and minority-owned eatery serving fully vegan Surinamese food. I got the vegan pork chop pita sandwich made using chestnut mushrooms, batjaw pita sandwich made using jackfruit, and tempeh sate with peanut sauce. Everything was ridiculously delicious and this was honestly one of the best meals I had in the Netherlands! They have daily dinner sets too, although unfortunately I didn’t get to try those. Located near De Pijp Station.

Amazing food, and absolutely sensational owner! We were 5 people and celebrating an engagement, and she was so kind, recommended delicious starters (eg tempeh starter) and mains, and everything was so flavorsome and unique. Will definitely be coming back!!

Delicious food as a non-vegan. Roti, tempeh sate and Jacky roti are all very tasty. You don't miss the meat for a moment, it's just exceptionally tasty food. The only disadvantage is that there are bottles of Chaudfontaine on the table instead of tap water. Then you pay for room temperature water of inferior quality and this tent should not need that. Then make the dishes a little more expensive and simply provide tap water.

I moved away from Amsterdam over a year ago and I still think about this restaurant... some of, if not the best vegan food I've ever had

Very delicious food and fancy tea ( I've took white tea with orange flavour) . We pre-order the Tea-Time tower with various different very tasty snacks. Starting with a tasty rich soup the tower contained savoury and sweet surinami snacks with unconventional ingredients

We ate a sauto here. We had to get used to the taste, everyone makes his or her sauto in their own way. This was surprisingly tasty and without chicken for once. The interior looks cozy with good tunes in the background.

We chose this restaurant because it is vegan and we like Surinamese food :) The Tempe sate was amazing! The Pom was also great! Loved it! The Caribbean Flour dumplings were not so much to our liking, unfortunately. We also ordered Cassava chips, which was very tasty! The Saoto soup seemed to be missing the beans, and the rice was served unfortunately very delayed, so it was wasted. The service was, unfortunately, slow. Maybe it was a bad day. I would like to give it another chance to try more dishes as well.

This is a nice place - the food was good (the starter was a bit too strong) and the service was endearing (sometimes a bit clumsy, but nice). The newly new (very nice!) waiter had forgotten our drinks. Furthermore, it is cozy, the atmosphere is good and you can look into the kitchen. If you like Surinamese food, it is highly recommended!

About prized versus a somewhat dingy atmosphere. Out to dinner with a friend on a Saturday evening. Warmly welcomed, nicely served by gentleman, who in the meantime also worked with the chef in the open kitchen (behind the bar). Explained well - and with a smile - how and what, good advice on what to order. He did have black cuticles, as if he had just overhauled his scooter. Friend missed “the meat”, but that is of course his fault, not this vegan restaurant. He thought the food was tasty, I gave it a 7.5 (I'm a flexitarian). Ambiance: small, uncomfortable chairs (we are 1.89 and 1.92). Correction stickers on the opening hours on the door and the menu. Clearly no attention has been paid to (and certainly not invested in) an inviting graphic design, a beautiful corporate identity. Cloth cover of menu: passes from hand to hand, food, greasyness, dingy, grimy. The menu may appear on the table a second time during dinner (and again in the hands of guests eating): not fresh. Other reviews also mention "the appearance of the menu" negatively, and several photos show how many grease stains there are on the fabric cover. All in all, the atmosphere does not match the price level (mid-2024) of the menus, because we found that spicy. Two starters (which we shared) and two main courses: it added up to a lot. We also found drinks (for example Corona beer) to be quite expensive. The prices would be more palatable if the overall presentation were a bit more professional and "fresher". I would come back for the food, but the somewhat schmutzy details here and there and the price level do not invite me to do so. Score, all in all: a fair 6.5. Three out of five stars. With a little more attention to the details mentioned, it would have been four stars. Who knows, for the future…?

Never had Surinamese food before coming in today. The soup and spicy cauliflower were amazing. The spicy sauce accompanying the soup was sweet and perfect for a cold day. Ruby was very polite and attentive. I would highly recommend

I felt like I was eating at a home, away from home. The food tasted great and the service was excellent. Wholesome, conversation and vegan food. Only thing is that you certainly need to have extra money to dine here. I ordered Pom & Patty, peppermint tea, water and a piece of cake and spent around €40. I didn’t mind to exchange it because I had it at the time..i was staying in Amsterdam for a few days and I couldn’t go back there because it was unaffordable for me to return. While dining, If there was perhaps a side salad on the menu for €5, I would have added this to the meal. it would have been nice to have that option. The decor is so welcoming. Thank you for the experience and a tasty, warming meal.

Cool restaurant with amazing food, good portions and well priced. The food tasted really tasted like home! The waiters were nice and helpful when choosing between the different dishes. They switch dishes between the different days of the week. You get to experience the wise variety of different cultures live in the Surinamese culinary world.

The €24.50 vegetarian rice plate disappoints with its steep price and underwhelming portion size. While the vegetables are fresh and the rice well-cooked, the flavors lack creativity or depth. The presentation feels standard, offering little to justify the premium cost. Overall, it’s an unremarkable dish that doesn’t match its price tag.

It was great, authentic, organic vegan Caribbean food! We started with the dumplings, which were amazing—they weren’t like the typical dumplings I was used to. Then we had the chickpea stew with potatoes, cabbage, and plantains, and the sauce was absolutely delicious. The restaurant had more of a dining vibe than a casual eating spot, which might explain the price. While the portions were relatively small for the price, it was still a lovely experience. Definitely planning to come back!

I live less than a kilometre away from here and I love it. The owner is amazing — Surinamese food with a vegan twist, their cassava soup is to die for.

I recently dined at Old Soul, a vegan Surinamese restaurant, and it was an absolute treat! I had the brown beans with rice, and it was deeeliciousss. Every bite was packed with flavor, and you can feel the love and care that went into preparing it. Talking bout love and care, the staff is super sweet. Old Soul is a hidden gem for anyone who loves authentic surinamese, soulful food. Highly recommended!

Lovely restaurant. Great atmosphere. Fresh, not heavy meals. Great fried plantains. Plate was well prepared and presentation. Portion size was large but not excessive. The beans were flavorful and not too salty. Seems like a non touristy place that actual locals visit. So glad I stopped by. The best meal I had in Amsterdam by far. One might consider it "pricey" but I don't. The quality of ingredients and care put into the preparation is what you pay for. I will stop back next time I'm in Amsterdam. Didn't try their desserts or drinks but based on the layout of the restaurant and the patrons themselves, I'm confident everything served here is great.

Unfortunately I cannot award any stars because despite an accepted reservation, The Old Soul was closed while Google Maps clearly indicated that the business was open from 12-15 and 17-22. 😩

The place is simple and calme. The daily menu is not too much so you can think faster. The meal was just PERFECT. I enjoyed it as I enjoyed the cocktail with chili and ginger. Thank you so much 💓

Sympathiek restaurant, bescheiden vegan kaart, prettige bediening. Surinaamse keuken, sommige gerechten mogen wat mij betreft wat pittiger.

Food was good, but felt very pricey for what you got. The glasses were sticky when we arrived, which was not a great idea, but they were washed again for us. Staff was friendly, but a bit stiff and slow.

I have now eaten here for the 2nd time, because the delicious vegan Surinamese dishes are delicious. Something that doesn't happen very often. The restaurant has a very sweet owner who cooks deliciously. The only area for improvement was the service, the waitress was friendly but not that fast. However, that also had its charm. I will definitely come back here again.

Over one hour waiting for main course, found piece of baking paper in one of the dish (with questionable quality and flavors - we had stomach pain next day). During almost empty place (10 guests incl us), no apologies or any extra communication. Pretty weird fact that they have opening days/hours everywhere different- web/maps/menu

My first experience of Surinamese food - awesome. Loved that on different days you can try different elements of the menu. Left absolutely stuffed, and so satisfied. Great team creating a wonderful environment that just adds to the experience.

I really enjoyed the vegan experience of Surinamese food. I had the heri heri and it looked and tasted delicious. The food was fresh and it reminded me of home (Curaçao). The hibiscus iced tea is something I always make, but I add sugar/honey. It doesn't come with that, but that's my personal taste. The cassava fries were delicious as well.

Ate here yesterday. The service is very friendly but slow. We waited 30+ minutes for drinks, after which it turned out that the beers were not cold. Can happen of course. The alternative that was offered later turned out to be non-alcoholic beer. We ended up waiting more than 1.5 hours for three simple main courses. They were not brought at the same time, a friend had to wait over fifteen minutes longer for her main course than the rest, without explanation or apology. My Her'Heri was missing the sweet potato.

Ate here last Friday and it was delicious, I especially enjoyed the Tempeh satay. I think it's especially good that there is a delicious Surinamese restaurant that is completely meat-free. We had a nice time and will definitely go again. 1 tip, it is nice if you order a certain beer and then also receive the corresponding glass. Next time I want the table by the window! 😉

Food was pretty good, however the service was very very slow, even just for drinks. If you're going here for dinner, don't make plans for afterwards.

We had a really delicious meal here. Everything we ordered tasted very good and was served nicely. However, the service after our main course was very slow and we had to ask if we could order something to drink and a dessert. We spent at least half an hour without food or drinks, while you could clearly see that the glasses of the previous drinks (which were not taken after ordering a new drink) were empty and there was no food on the table. The men's toilet was clean and the restaurant has a cozy atmosphere. We will definitely come back here again to enjoy the chef's delicious dishes.

Rarely have you eaten such mediocre Surinamese food. We had been given a cozy table by the window and the young waitress approached us kindly and brought us the menu. After looking at the menu we ordered the pom balls (these weren't bad) and the pom dish + heri heri. The 2 dishes were tasteless, bland and the pom tasted of nothing at all. When I asked for the bill I had to pay 84 euros (I have to add that that we had drunk 4 coronas and 1 bottle of water) but so much money for so little taste was a real damper for my Saturday evening! I will never come here again.

Nice tent with an original atmosphere. Food is good, but limited choice per day (every day they only have a choice of 3 main courses). Lovely people who do their work with love. So go.
