The Old Soul in Museumkwartier

We ate a sauto here. We had to get used to the taste, everyone makes his or her sauto in their own way. This was surprisingly tasty and without chicken for once. The interior looks cozy with good tunes in the background.

Happiness in a plate !! Reallyyyy yummyyy food, obviously made with love. Discovered an Orgeade to die for. Absolutely lovely place and adorable service. Recommend 💯 !!

We chose this restaurant because it is vegan and we like Surinamese food :) The Tempe sate was amazing! The Pom was also great! Loved it! The Caribbean Flour dumplings were not so much to our liking, unfortunately. We also ordered Cassava chips, which was very tasty! The Saoto soup seemed to be missing the beans, and the rice was served unfortunately very delayed, so it was wasted. The service was, unfortunately, slow. Maybe it was a bad day. I would like to give it another chance to try more dishes as well.

This is a nice place - the food was good (the starter was a bit too strong) and the service was endearing (sometimes a bit clumsy, but nice). The newly new (very nice!) waiter had forgotten our drinks. Furthermore, it is cozy, the atmosphere is good and you can look into the kitchen. If you like Surinamese food, it is highly recommended!

About prized versus a somewhat dingy atmosphere. Out to dinner with a friend on a Saturday evening. Warmly welcomed, nicely served by gentleman, who in the meantime also worked with the chef in the open kitchen (behind the bar). Explained well - and with a smile - how and what, good advice on what to order. He did have black cuticles, as if he had just overhauled his scooter. Friend missed “the meat”, but that is of course his fault, not this vegan restaurant. He thought the food was tasty, I gave it a 7.5 (I'm a flexitarian). Ambiance: small, uncomfortable chairs (we are 1.89 and 1.92). Correction stickers on the opening hours on the door and the menu. Clearly no attention has been paid to (and certainly not invested in) an inviting graphic design, a beautiful corporate identity. Cloth cover of menu: passes from hand to hand, food, greasyness, dingy, grimy. The menu may appear on the table a second time during dinner (and again in the hands of guests eating): not fresh. Other reviews also mention "the appearance of the menu" negatively, and several photos show how many grease stains there are on the fabric cover. All in all, the atmosphere does not match the price level (mid-2024) of the menus, because we found that spicy. Two starters (which we shared) and two main courses: it added up to a lot. We also found drinks (for example Corona beer) to be quite expensive. The prices would be more palatable if the overall presentation were a bit more professional and "fresher". I would come back for the food, but the somewhat schmutzy details here and there and the price level do not invite me to do so. Score, all in all: a fair 6.5. Three out of five stars. With a little more attention to the details mentioned, it would have been four stars. Who knows, for the future…?

Never had Surinamese food before coming in today. The soup and spicy cauliflower were amazing. The spicy sauce accompanying the soup was sweet and perfect for a cold day. Ruby was very polite and attentive. I would highly recommend

I felt like I was eating at a home, away from home. The food tasted great and the service was excellent. Wholesome, conversation and vegan food. Only thing is that you certainly need to have extra money to dine here. I ordered Pom & Patty, peppermint tea, water and a piece of cake and spent around €40. I didn’t mind to exchange it because I had it at the time..i was staying in Amsterdam for a few days and I couldn’t go back there because it was unaffordable for me to return. While dining, If there was perhaps a side salad on the menu for €5, I would have added this to the meal. it would have been nice to have that option. The decor is so welcoming. Thank you for the experience and a tasty, warming meal.

Great food, I recommend the tjauw min and soato soup

Cool restaurant with amazing food, good portions and well priced. The food tasted really tasted like home! The waiters were nice and helpful when choosing between the different dishes. They switch dishes between the different days of the week. You get to experience the wise variety of different cultures live in the Surinamese culinary world.

The €24.50 vegetarian rice plate disappoints with its steep price and underwhelming portion size. While the vegetables are fresh and the rice well-cooked, the flavors lack creativity or depth. The presentation feels standard, offering little to justify the premium cost. Overall, it’s an unremarkable dish that doesn’t match its price tag.

It was great, authentic, organic vegan Caribbean food! We started with the dumplings, which were amazing—they weren’t like the typical dumplings I was used to. Then we had the chickpea stew with potatoes, cabbage, and plantains, and the sauce was absolutely delicious. The restaurant had more of a dining vibe than a casual eating spot, which might explain the price. While the portions were relatively small for the price, it was still a lovely experience. Definitely planning to come back!

I live less than a kilometre away from here and I love it. The owner is amazing — Surinamese food with a vegan twist, their cassava soup is to die for.

I recently dined at Old Soul, a vegan Surinamese restaurant, and it was an absolute treat! I had the brown beans with rice, and it was deeeliciousss. Every bite was packed with flavor, and you can feel the love and care that went into preparing it. Talking bout love and care, the staff is super sweet. Old Soul is a hidden gem for anyone who loves authentic surinamese, soulful food. Highly recommended!

Lovely restaurant. Great atmosphere. Fresh, not heavy meals. Great fried plantains. Plate was well prepared and presentation. Portion size was large but not excessive. The beans were flavorful and not too salty. Seems like a non touristy place that actual locals visit. So glad I stopped by. The best meal I had in Amsterdam by far. One might consider it "pricey" but I don't. The quality of ingredients and care put into the preparation is what you pay for. I will stop back next time I'm in Amsterdam. Didn't try their desserts or drinks but based on the layout of the restaurant and the patrons themselves, I'm confident everything served here is great.

Unfortunately I cannot award any stars because despite an accepted reservation, The Old Soul was closed while Google Maps clearly indicated that the business was open from 12-15 and 17-22. 😩

The place is simple and calme. The daily menu is not too much so you can think faster. The meal was just PERFECT. I enjoyed it as I enjoyed the cocktail with chili and ginger. Thank you so much 💓

Sympathiek restaurant, bescheiden vegan kaart, prettige bediening. Surinaamse keuken, sommige gerechten mogen wat mij betreft wat pittiger.

Food was good, but felt very pricey for what you got. The glasses were sticky when we arrived, which was not a great idea, but they were washed again for us. Staff was friendly, but a bit stiff and slow.

I have now eaten here for the 2nd time, because the delicious vegan Surinamese dishes are delicious. Something that doesn't happen very often. The restaurant has a very sweet owner who cooks deliciously. The only area for improvement was the service, the waitress was friendly but not that fast. However, that also had its charm. I will definitely come back here again.

Over one hour waiting for main course, found piece of baking paper in one of the dish (with questionable quality and flavors - we had stomach pain next day). During almost empty place (10 guests incl us), no apologies or any extra communication. Pretty weird fact that they have opening days/hours everywhere different- web/maps/menu

My first experience of Surinamese food - awesome. Loved that on different days you can try different elements of the menu. Left absolutely stuffed, and so satisfied. Great team creating a wonderful environment that just adds to the experience.

I really enjoyed the vegan experience of Surinamese food. I had the heri heri and it looked and tasted delicious. The food was fresh and it reminded me of home (Curaçao). The hibiscus iced tea is something I always make, but I add sugar/honey. It doesn't come with that, but that's my personal taste. The cassava fries were delicious as well.

Ate here yesterday. The service is very friendly but slow. We waited 30+ minutes for drinks, after which it turned out that the beers were not cold. Can happen of course. The alternative that was offered later turned out to be non-alcoholic beer. We ended up waiting more than 1.5 hours for three simple main courses. They were not brought at the same time, a friend had to wait over fifteen minutes longer for her main course than the rest, without explanation or apology. My Her'Heri was missing the sweet potato.

Ate here last Friday and it was delicious, I especially enjoyed the Tempeh satay. I think it's especially good that there is a delicious Surinamese restaurant that is completely meat-free. We had a nice time and will definitely go again. 1 tip, it is nice if you order a certain beer and then also receive the corresponding glass. Next time I want the table by the window! 😉

Food was pretty good, however the service was very very slow, even just for drinks. If you're going here for dinner, don't make plans for afterwards.

We had a really delicious meal here. Everything we ordered tasted very good and was served nicely. However, the service after our main course was very slow and we had to ask if we could order something to drink and a dessert. We spent at least half an hour without food or drinks, while you could clearly see that the glasses of the previous drinks (which were not taken after ordering a new drink) were empty and there was no food on the table. The men's toilet was clean and the restaurant has a cozy atmosphere. We will definitely come back here again to enjoy the chef's delicious dishes.

Rarely have you eaten such mediocre Surinamese food. We had been given a cozy table by the window and the young waitress approached us kindly and brought us the menu. After looking at the menu we ordered the pom balls (these weren't bad) and the pom dish + heri heri. The 2 dishes were tasteless, bland and the pom tasted of nothing at all. When I asked for the bill I had to pay 84 euros (I have to add that that we had drunk 4 coronas and 1 bottle of water) but so much money for so little taste was a real damper for my Saturday evening! I will never come here again.

Nice tent with an original atmosphere. Food is good, but limited choice per day (every day they only have a choice of 3 main courses). Lovely people who do their work with love. So go.

Chanced upon this gem on Kings Day on our way somewhere else. So happy we stopped here instead. Divinely inspired plant based expression of Surinamese food - flavors we never experienced before. The owner is so beautiful, and her love of her food and culture can be felt in every single dish. It was all fabulous - our favs were the Pomballen, the Ital Food, and the mango passion fruit cheesecake

This wasn't our first time celebrating a birthday at The Old Soul, and it definitely won't be our last. It's the kind of place that makes you feel special. To our complete surprise, the entire staff sang a birthday song in Surinamese whilst bringing our desserts, and the whole restaurant joined in to applaud! A heartfelt thank you to the owner and incredible team at The Old Soul for making my birthday unforgettable. Truly a tasty and memorable experience.

We were looking forward to our first visit. I had made a reservation for 2 people a week in advance. Today, upon entering, we were directed to the only uncovered table that was in front of the bar and behind a coat rack. Where the buttocks of the people sitting at the bar just barely touch your face. The employees would then have had to walk between those buttocks and that table to the bar and/or kitchen. Sorry, but that is not a place to post guests of your restaurant. And especially when we see that there are other tables available at that time. Too bad, but a difference is made between your guests. Bad service.

Had a delicious meal with a friend on March 28. Was busy, but everyone got nice attention. Saoto soup, roti roll and BBQ with pak choi and moksi allesi. Delicious and lots of it. Took it home and enjoyed it the next day. Definitely come back.

We ate here for the third time last night, the first time was great, the second time, a month ago there was no staff and the owner was on her own (fortunately help came later) so we fully understood that the food would take a little longer. to last. We found it so annoying for her that we offered our help. In the end we didn't have to wait too long. I had the saoto soup which was very tasty and I also took home another dish that I ordered. In terms of price/quality ratio, I think the prices for the portions you get are on the high side. So yesterday we decided to eat there again with a friend who had not been there yet. We had made a reservation at 7:00 PM and we didn't get our food until around 9:00 PM. People who came in after us had their food before us. It turned out that our entire order had been forgotten. The owner also assisted in the service and told us to be patient because there was a shortage of staff, so the food could take a little longer. Okay, fine if we have to wait a little longer, but an hour and a half? Really not okay. And if people have to wait longer, at least give them a small snack (sandwich, etc.) in the meantime. Luckily I had eaten something beforehand, but my friend had not, so I found it even more annoying for him. I received a free drink as compensation, but no, I will not be eating here again anytime soon, which is a shame because I am very happy with a vegan Surinamese restaurant nearby.

typical 5 stars! I ate a very good (and large) roti roll here. Finally I can say that I have found a favorite vegan roti roll in 020. Previously I couldn't determine whether Roopram or Aarti-2 or Ram's Roti had the best roll, but now it has become really clear that The Old Soul was my previous leaving your favorites behind! 😁 atmosphere & service no longer matter. the lady who runs the place was very busy, due to too much publicity, so we had to wait a while, but luckily we were also out for dinner to catch up, so that was no problem of course 😉 I will come back here very soon, says my crystal ball!

I came across this restaurant on AT5. From Rotterdam back and forth to Amsterdam to eat a vegan Roti here, it was delicious.

We hired The Old Soul to cater our staff party (approximately 35 people). Communication went smoothly. After our request, we quickly received a quote with a very extensive menu. One of our guests had a peanut allergy, which was immediately resolved by The Old Soul with a menu adjustment. There was clear communication about the time schedule, they were right on time to start the layout. The layout itself was absolutely beautiful, it exceeded all our expectations. Each dish was clearly indicated as to what it was and an allergen card was available. All in all, we can recommend The Old Soul for your catering!

Very cozy place with friendly staff. We had not made a reservation, although apparently it is better to do so. All tables were occupied, but we were eventually able to sit at the bar. The food is special. They didn't seem like Westernized versions to us, but really authentic. Maybe not to everyone's taste, but we liked it.

The first time was great. It was on a Sunday. The owner served me personally and everything went well. I ordered pom first and dumplings as well. The second time was on a Saturday evening. The owner left when we came in as a group. We had reserved for six. We had asked for okra soup about a week in advance. It was not on the menu. All salads were sold out. Which I regretted, because that is one of the few things I can eat. Most of the desserts were sold out as well. There was only one piece of apple pie left. They had to share it. The waiters got all confused and made mistakes. This was a great disappointment. Something that wasn't ordered, was on the bill. We found out afterwards. I was ashamed because I was the one who had recommended the restaurant to my relatives. They loved the food and the atmosphere, but were not pleased about the above mentioned matters.

Not clean, the place doesn’t look professional, too expensive for what they serve (especially the main courses), “homemade” stuff that weren’t homemade, uninterested waiter with no front of house skills, not the best ambience and a very bad menu map when it comes to appearances. And we heard the same 4 songs in a loop for about 8 times. We’ve been to a lot of vegan restaurants, with a lot of gratitude, but this was really uncomfortable. The taste of the food was ok, but it wasn’t worth it.

Just an honest review to avoid possible disappointments. I had dinner here tonight (23-02) for my sister's 21st birthday, nothing was done, no congratulations or anything even though this had been reported in advance. Almost everything we wanted to order was no longer in stock, something that can happen. Then our food was all brought to the table at a different time, very messy, no communication and cold saoto soup. Pity..

Was looking forward to trying this unique restaurant but unfortunately the actual experience was pretty bad. Food was delicious, but the portions are tiny for the price. The place was overcrowded so we were sat extremely close to other diners and service was extremely slow to the point where our sides just didn't arrive. It's a shame because the food was good but I would strongly avoid going back.

Being Valentine's day we wanted to celebrate us four friends. So we decided to make a reservation at The Old Soul, seeing the beautiful food pictures and the good reviews online. We were super excited when we walked into the warm, cosy atmosphere, however, maybe it was because it was a 'special day' the food, and the overall experience ended up being quite disappointing. They did not have the regular Wednesday menu, but instead had a special 'Valentine's day' menu of two main dishes. One was with bbq mushrooms and quinoa. The second, was with Pom, rice and involved batter fried mushrooms. Both of them were served in small-ish bowls and in both of them there were a lot of raw onions (red and green). The bbq mushrooms were quite sweet, and the batter fried dish was okay, but it was not warm at all. In fact it felt like it had been made a while ago. The rice that came with it was nice, though once again, not warm. These two dishes cost 27,50 each, which was shocking, considering the dish itself and the quantity. We also ordered a roti roll, which was 16 euros, and quite expensive for a roll in my opinion. The sambal that came with it was it's saving grace. The only thing we genuinely enjoyed was the cassava fries. The service was okay, but it seemed like the servers were harried, or perhaps the restaurant was short staffed that day. All in all, maybe we should have gone to The Old Soul another day.

My first experience with Surinamese food and I was not disappointed. I ordered the POM PATTY SRANAN BOWL and it was delicious. The atmosphere was nice with friendly hosts. It was on the expensive side but I guess these are the prices in this area. I would definitely recommend this place for quality vegan food.

Misschien waren onze verwachtingen door de lovende recensie in de nrc te hoog gespannen, want we vonden het eten redelijk smakelijk, maar ook niet meer dan dat. Het dagelijks wisselende menu maakt de keuze beperkt. Het voorgerecht -dumplings- was goed droog gefrituurd, maar had een naar onze smaak te dikke en iets te harde korst en was verder te droog in de mond. Het hoofdgerecht - bakbananen met rode kool en gestoofde kikkererwten- was goed van smaak, maar zeker wat betreft de hoeveelheid bakbananen aan de zuinige kant. De turtlecake was lekker maar behoorlijk compact. En nog nooit zo'n klein bodempje espresso gekregen. Wel goed sterk, zodat we ter aanvulling maar wat heet water vroegen (en zonder probleem kregen). Bij aankomst staat een flesje mineraalwater op tafel (kassa! gewoon kraanwater moet je vragen). Wat het meest teleurstelde was wel de temperatuur: een jas aan tijdens het eten leek niet overdreven. Het laatste wat je verwacht in een Surinaams restaurant. Bovendien een buitendeur die kennelijk niet makkelijk sluit en geen afscheiding/gordijn, dus het is aan te bevelen daar zo ver mogelijk vandaan te gaan zitten. De ontvangst en de bediening zijn vriendelijk.

We all came for dinner, we loved the place, the atmosphere, the attentive service and the food! We ordered the soup of the day, delicious, they serve it with white rice, if you're not very hungry, you could already have dinner with that. But, above all, if they bring you some soy and an orange sauce to go with it, if you don't like the spiciness, don't even get close to the orange 😊 We ordered a coconut dessert, very good, too. Definitely a place to keep in mind!!

The best vegan food I can remember having.. the spices are so good and the plantain dish with red cabbage!!! So yum. 🤤 Can’t wait to come here again and try something else on the menu! Also fun that they have a different set of options for every day… means I will need to come a different day every time 😁
