Purnama Indonesian Kitchen & Bar in Indische Buurt West

€100+ for a cold takeaway meal, and not enough for 4 people. The containers were half full. I'm embarrassed for my guests who were visiting me because we weren't satisfied after this meal. Disgraceful. I paid €9 for two small plastic bags of prawn crackers. The satay sticks didn't have any satay on them—they were small cocktail sticks. Small sauce packets. A real rip-off. I called ahead, and when I arrived 25 minutes later, I was told they didn't have Nasi Goreng. It's strange that they didn't call to ask if I wanted something else. I won't be going back and I don't recommend this place. Disgraceful!

After the kind Indonesian female employee confirmed that take-away was certainly possible, the Spanish (or something similar) male manager (I assume by his behavior) in an almost aggressive manner, walked towards me and was literally like at 5 cm distance of my face - very rude. He told me that take away was possible but that it would take 20 to 30 minutes. After I said that that was no problem for me, he suddenly turned shady and said there where no take-away containers anymore... Second time, something like this happend at Purnama.

Amazing Indonesian food and a really friendly staff!

The portions were very small, even taking into account the shared dining concept. Some dishes were good (f.e beef rendang), some were average and underwhelming (the shrimp soup). Overall, I found the price-quality-amount ratio quite bad. We have waited for AN HOUR for our mains to arrive because of the problem with ticketing system. There were very few cooks, I guess, this could be one of the reasons. And we didn't get any discount for waiting so long. At the start, we didn't get the water as we asked for. At the end, we had to ask the waiters to come bc both of them were having dinner, so there was nobody to help the customers (if needed). I would say that it's an okay place to get introduced to the Indonesian cuisine, but the service and the price could be improved.

We visited this Vietnamese restaurant as a large group and went for the shared group menu, which cost €30 per person. The food itself was very good and with a nice variety of dishes. However, the portion sizes were a bit underwhelming for the price. Most of us felt we didn’t quite get enough to feel full, which was a bit disappointing for a group setting. I think for smaller groups (2–5 people), the experience is probably much better balanced and more enjoyable.

I went here because we had two fantastic experiences at a former sister restaurant 'Amoi'. Every dish was special and an experience, the price more than justified. Stood out above other Indonesian restaurants. Our experience at Purnama was unfortunately not comparable. For me, the vast majority of the dishes were average, our local takeaway was sometimes even more exciting. Yet sometimes it was spot on and a dish could compete with the top. It may have been because there was too little staff that the dishes were substandard. The restaurant was also dirty. I saw three men and they were running around like crazy. Service was slow, but we got extras and apologies before we got irritated; we were seen. And that is rare for Amsterdam these days. We were there on a Tuesday evening. In conclusion, Purnama is a restaurant where here and there a dish promises that they can be among the best. The prices they charge show that they at least have that ambition/aspiration. However, during my visit, the price-quality ratio was not in order. It will not be an easy time for restaurants, hence this mild review. Keep it up. I have hope.

We have eaten in many Indonesian restaurants but this was very different, very special, unique. Really very good flavours and completely different again. We had the Batagor (delicious, delicious sauce!) and Pangsit (very good) as an entree, then a mix of satay (Tahu and Kambing), Nasi Kuning and the Sayur Lodeh. The latter was really delicious! Never eaten such delicious Sayur! So full of flavour! For dessert the Cendol, also one of the best I have ever had. Really everything is delicious. Service is nice and accommodating. You do sit a bit close together, that is the only "downside".

I was so excited to try this place, but disappointed with their service and foods. The server was not friendly, and the food was not authentic. My Soto was also very small (portion wise). I will not go back. The place is ok, in terms of seating. It’s pretty dark when we came in. There are so many other Indonesian restaurants, I will be looking to try other ones when I return to Amsterdam.

There was no change, only two 50,- notes standard in the cash register, 6 euros for yellow rice with your dish, take-away containers that do not close properly and the sauce leaked out and the chicken and nasi kuning were very bland. Little taste. No extra piece of vegetable or peanut. Very bare. I will not come back.

I wouldn’t go there for the ambiance. It is perfectly fine, just nothing special. The staff is very friendly and efficient, definitely a plus. But the main reason why I recommend it so highly is the food. The menu is not that extensive but everything we had was just so tasty. So much flavour, just the right amount of spicy, everything combined so well with each other. It tasted like when my mother and aunts cooked for the whole family but even better.

This was my first time eating Indonesian food in Amsterdam, and it was excellent! Even with Indonesian standards the meals were very delicious. I ordered the Udang Balado Pete with Teh Sosro, perfect combination. They were very generous with the shrimp, and the sauce was rich and complex and most importantly “medok” enough for me 😋The service was also great, our waitress recommended just the right amount of rice for our group of four. Last but not least, we were offered tahu tempe with sambal terasi (which we gladly accepted) and that was basically the highlight of our Amsterdam trip. Definitely coming back here!

Would have liked to eat there... I heard it would be very tasty. But upon entering we immediately got a very arrogant look and were shown the door because they were "fully reserved"... and that in the most arrogant and condescending tone you can have. yet there were many tables available and the bar was empty... too bad.

the interior is beautiful. was sceptical at first because from google you cant really see the interior. but it was really cool. with the bar, an open kitchen, the plants. Also the food was really good. Im indonesian and I can say it was flavorful. Sambal ijo was so good and sambal setan as well but very spicy

We went to this restaurant for dinner and were fully satisfied. We ordered a first course each, one of which was recommended by the girl who works there, very kind and professional. We then accompanied the first courses with rice and typical Indonesian chips. I highly recommend this restaurant, the location is warm and welcoming with an open kitchen and very kind staff.

As a family, we love Indonesian food, but don't always like the interior design/decor/atmosphere (bright lights, old-fashioned furniture, etc) of many Indonesian restaurants... And this is how Purnama differs: it's a modern, beautifully designed Indonesian restaurant with delicious food (with lots of veggie and vegan options) and great service! Highly recommended!

Good food! Portions are more than sufficient and I think the flavors are a combination of Javanese and Balinese. Price-quality is more than excellent. We would definitely come back again.

Had dinner here tonight. I was a bit hesitant because of a very negative review on TikTok, but we had a great evening. The food was tasty, all dishes tasted good. The goat satay and the steamed fish in banana leaves are particularly recommended! The service was friendly and fast, we asked by telephone if we could be welcome half an hour earlier and that was possible. This flexibility is appreciated.

Had dinner here on Sunday evening, the second Indonesian restaurant we tried in AMS. We had previously been to “Warna Baru”, the sister of this restaurant, which unfortunately we only realized when we noticed the identical menu. The experience was similar, nasi kuning too dry, nasi goreng okay but not special. Sayur lodeh good, but unfortunately way too spicy for my friend. And even though we had asked in advance whether it was REALLY not spicy... the paint is peeling off the chairs, which may sound whiny, but it still contributes to the overall experience. Attention and love for the details were missing for me. Shame!

The food was tasty, but not that hot. The restaurant looks cozy. I think the back of my chair was broken because it bent very far back. The staff was friendly but not very attentive. When we wanted to order, the staff was chatting in the kitchen. After dinner the empty plates sat on the table for a very long time, no one came to ask if we wanted anything else and I had to go to the staff twice. Shame. When the plates were finally collected, a glass fell over, the service did not return with extra paper or tea towels to wipe the wet table. Perhaps the staff was still quite new, so see this as constructive criticism.

Lovely Indonesian recommended by a friend who lives in Amsterdam when we were visiting from London. We would’ve like the food a bit more saucy. The Telur egg curry was very dry in comparison to the images we looked up. All tasted good though, nothing to overly rave about.

We visited this restaurant yesterday with high expectations based on the photos and reviews. Unfortunately, it didn’t meet our standards in terms of taste or portion sizes. Having been to Indonesia, we were hoping for an authentic experience. However, the plates were small and the cost adds up if you want to be full. We ordered three meat dishes and requested nasi goreng, but it wasn't available as the kitchen was about to close. Instead, we got the noodles, which were disappointing—just dry, curly, packaged noodles with no sauce. The chili chicken, made from drummettes, was dry and lacked flavor. The beef stew was more of a dry mash. On the positive side, the crispy duck was good, and the staff were friendly. It was disappointing to leave somewhat unsatisfied, given the restaurant's potential. I do hope they up their game!

This is my go to halal Indonesian restaurant. They serve delicious high quality Indonesian food and the staff is always nice. They took into account that we had to leave earlier and did their best to serve us as best and fast as possible. 🙏🏽

This used to be a great spot when they just first opened. But they changed the concept and make the menu more mainstream to the dutch and portion is way smaller. No more delicious soto betawi. Iga bakar also tasted different from the first time we tried. It is now another dutch indo restaurant that does rijstaffel concept. I hope Purnama can thrive again and serve delicious, iconic indonesian dishes that stay true to it's roots. The place was super cozy and service was great.

NOISE A bit of a contradictory review: almost everything is TOP! Beautiful authentic recipes and preparation, attentive and sweet staff and the tasteful design of the restaurant. Price-quality ratio really is Javastraat. But a huge negative: the acoustics. It is one large smooth reverberation tank, so that in the busy restaurant you are immersed in one loud box of noise. You can only have an intelligible conversation if you also start shouting. Which is annoying because the tables are quite close together. It would be nice if something were changed about this: structure on the ceiling? Want to change something about all those smooth surfaces? If necessary, ask Wilde Zwijnen, they had the same problem in their early days).

One of the best Indonesian restaurants I’ve been to in Europe. We ordered siomay (fishcake with peanut sauce), fried duck, grilled ribs, and tempeh and beans stir fry. Everything was delicious and authentic. Fantastic service as well. Avoid other Indonesian restaurants/tourist traps (where the spices are often watered down) in the city center and head to Purnama instead.

Indonesian 'rijsttafel' with lots of vegan and vegetarian options to share. Really liked the Tempe Mandoan starter with the nice chili sauce. Sate of tofu and tempeh is always a favorite. The Sayur Lodeh veggies in coconut sauce were great as well. Make sure to order your rice on the side. Good beer selection with some great non alcoholic beers that really match the dishes. And... there are more vegan plates that we didn't even get to try yet, so will be back another time. Sampai jumpa lagi!

Pangsit Goreng: The filling was so dry that it tasted like cardboard. As if it had been left in the fryer too long. Ayam Asam Manis: The chicken was really tough and was not tasty to eat. Sate Ayam: This dish was the only one worth paying for. The taste was good and the chicken thigh pieces were tender. Mie Goreng: Very dry and not pleasant to eat. We left almost everything after tasting it. The only thing we did eat was the satay. I felt really insulted that they made us wait so long and then served us this poor quality food. Not at all what you would expect. We had to go somewhere else to eat afterwards. They tried to compensate us for this experience by putting a discount on the bill. But honestly, it still feels wrong to have paid a little more than the sate ayam. Very nice Indonesian restaurant which is unfortunately very rare. Good service and good advice on which dishes were gluten-free. There was definitely a good selection of dishes. The portions are already small and we still had to order more. That's why it was a lot of fun, but delicious.

We had an amazing meal. The staff are friendly and the ambiance welcoming and visually appealing. The food was delicious! It was paced nicely and we probably tried 12 different dishes (there were four of us) which is also part of the enjoyment. Portions are enough to share but not too much so you can try many different things. A truly lovely meal. If you like spice try the chicken in green chili. It gives chili heads all the want and more.

I've been to Purnama several times and it was always good. Went again today and unfortunately my experience was completely different. The food was mediocre (the rendang seemed to have been in the microwave a little too long). The portions are extremely small. I'm not a big eater, but the small bowl of nasi really wasn't enough. The service indicated that two people could easily eat it. The atmosphere was also completely different than before. The tent was half empty, which is understandable given the far too high prices that people dare to ask for the mediocre quality. The concept has recently changed into a shared dining concept and since then the level has deteriorated. I hesitated between 1 and 2 stars. Ultimately gave 2 stars because the service did its best. Too bad, but no more Purnama for me. There are much better Indonesian restaurant in Amsterdam.

Lovely restaurant with excellent food

Tasty Indonesian dishes where it is also a nice place to eat, the employees are nice and I would come here more often with my family or acquaintances.

Unfortunately this place doesn’t even deserve a 1 star. It was mine and my boyfriend’s worst ever dining experience… The food was cold, not even luke warm and had zero flavour. The menu says the beef rendang is spicy but there wasn’t even a hint of spice. I am Indonesian and there were no Indo flavours but worse than that, it simply just lacked salt. Now onto the service. We asked for a takeaway container and got it back after a bit of time but nothing to complain about, but the waiter didn’t offer us dessert or the bill. I had to call him over for the bill which took SO long to get. And when we finally got it, he didn’t bring a machine and he just left! He went to go clean a table and there were no guests to be seated so..? After another 10+ minutes of failing to call him over another waiter brought the machine. It took over 30 minutes to get the bill and finally pay it… Also the table beside us wasn’t able to get anything they initially ordered as they ran out of it. Terrible experience. Save your money and go get good take-out Indonesian.
