Ordered two white carpaccio rolls. After 45 minutes, it finally arrived. One white and one non-white roll. Okay, another 45 minutes to wait, so no white. Salt and pepper were added, but the salt shaker was broken at the bottom. The lady disappeared with it, and no more salt was seen. The carpaccio turned out to be quite tough pork. Unfortunately. When we paid for two rolls at €14.00 and two drinks, we were charged €80. After protesting, it turned out to be a mistake, but I had heard the same thing from the table next to us. They were charged €41 for three hot chocolates. After one of them protested, they said: oh, I see now, it was a mistake, unfortunately. I don't think it was a mistake, just a rip-off.

We had booked a High Wine and High Beer for a small group. The drinks were delicious and the food was wonderful. We were served by friendly staff. We had a wonderful evening!

The food was good, tasty, fast, presented beautifully on the plate, and left us wanting more. And all of that in a lovely setting and beautiful building!

What a location and what an atmosphere! The beer is good and so is the food!

The restaurant is located on the main square in Hoorn – a charming city with a rich history. The building it's in also has a fascinating story behind it: cheese used to be inspected here. Now you can dine here. The starters were very well received! The carpaccio was tender and the yellow curry soup was spicy. However, the main course was subpar. For €21+, I got one satay skewer. Now, for me, it's not about quantity, but quality. However, I found the meat rather dry and the satay sauce bland. The chef needs some work here. For variety, we also wanted some fries. On the waitress's recommendation, the six of us ordered three portions of fries. However, it was far too much! Partly because the fish & chips were more than half the fries. It's a shame the waitress didn't mention this. All in all, I wouldn't send anyone here in its current state. The 'flair' and taste are missing, while you do pay real catering prices.

We ended up here for my parents' 25th wedding anniversary. The building is old and a bit dusty, but the story behind it, about the cheese being weighed here to prevent farmers from committing fraud, certainly makes up for it! 😁 The quality of the food, however, wasn't quite as expected, and the story of the building doesn't make up for it. The starter was good (curry soup, burrata, carpaccio). However, the main course was subpar. Satay: one skewer of undercooked meat with a meager amount of sauce—which also lacked a distinct flavor. I call that a good price. Fries had to be ordered separately, which is a shame considering the price of the food. But the fries themselves were also completely unsatisfactory: soggy and not crispy. The staff recommended three containers, but that was far too much for the six of us. A real shame, but luckily we could take them home. (These were much better the next day from the air fryer.) We also ordered oven-baked vegetables, but we didn't receive them. Mistakes can happen, of course, but this detracted even more from the overall experience. Given the quality of the other food, we didn't need them either. Finally, it wasn't warm inside either. It's a large building, which is probably difficult to heat and keep warm, but keep that in mind. Unfortunately, we wouldn't return here ourselves.

The café has a great, central location in the pedestrian zone. We found the food and drinks to be average, and the restrooms were shabby and definitely too small (one for men, one for women), resulting in very long lines and long waits.

It was very cozy. The staff was a bit overwhelmed. A lot of things were broken. My husband got his beer served on his pants. The food was good, though. A bit expensive.

On the terrace, we had two croquettes with bread. After 45 minutes, we asked what was wrong. "Oh, sorry, something went wrong." We asked how much longer it would take. Another 6 minutes, okay, we waited. After 10 minutes, we asked again and were told we wouldn't wait any longer. The service is unbelievable. Dear people, don't go there.

I ordered a Herto Jan vase. I got a BW glass. A whistle fits in this glass. So you asked for a vase and you got a whistle that looks like a vase... It's not about the money. I feel cheated.

Very dirty restrooms...!!! I already mentioned this on my previous visit. Nothing improved today. Wet floor, wet areas around the sink. No towels and a strong urine stench. That makes me wonder about the hygiene in the kitchen...

A nice terrace and friendly service, but at the same time, a textbook example of what we've come to call "graablation." Chicken satay skewers with barely any satay sauce for €21.50, and then you have to order fries separately for €4.50! Absolutely ridiculous!

I sat on the terrace and had a cappuccino and apple pie, and it was great! I think all the terraces combined don't enhance the atmosphere of De Rode Steen square.

This time I only had coffee in the restaurant. What bothered me most is that it is very dirty inside. There is no cleaning. The tables (legs and in the cracks of the table tops), the floor, the windows, everything on the ceiling, the ventilation grilles. Everything is equally dirty. I wonder what the kitchen looks like where the food is prepared. I don't need to anymore...

A glass of wine and a (small) Leffe blond... €11.20... Congratulations. I have never paid so much for 2 small drinks on the terrace. Totally over the top!!!

Sat here on the terrace and enjoyed the sun. After some drinks we also decided to have a bite to eat. The dinner menu is not very big, but what is on it is quite good. The nachos were well filled (also between the layers) and the fish & chips were also very tasty. Fish tasted good and tender, fries were also very tasty. Service is also friendly and you are helped quickly. All in all recommended.

Eating and drinking in a historic setting

We had a great time. It wasn't the boy who served us. He can stay as far as I'm concerned. The other sourpuss certainly wasn't having a good day. Apart from that, we ate and drank well. Playing a bit of piano for the atmosphere is always fun. The wobbly table is really annoying. All in all, we had a nice evening.

Ordered a drink outside on the terrace, where there is a beautiful view. Service very slow, wrong order brought. Not very customer friendly, except for 1 nice waitress. The rest of the staff could do with a course on how to deal with customers. Not recommended to sit there.

Ik heb de thaise curry besteld. Natuurlijk niet slim in Nederland maar deze was viezer dan ooit. Zou graag een foto posten maar lukt niet helaas.

Had a main course here with a few friends. The food tasted good and I had the burger myself. However, I thought it was pricey for what you get. Furthermore, the service was friendly and we had a nice view of the red stone where you can enjoy people watching.

Yesterday afternoon I ordered an alcohol beer (3.95 eu) and latte machiatto (caramel) (4.30 eu). Had to pay 15 eu. Only afterwards did it become apparent that something was wrong. Scammed by the blond young man with a tattoo (butterfly) on his forearm. Cheers! I'll never come here again!

Hamburger d’oude waegh besteld, hamburger leek niet vers en volledig doorbakken. Kan gebeuren, maar vooral de reactie op onze klacht was verbazingwekkend: geen excuus, geen nieuwe hamburger, bedrag voor de hamburger moest volledig betaald worden. Wel kregen we als reactie dat ze er de volgende keer op zouden letten….

The staff didn't feel like it tonight. I thought it was more important to chat with each other than to pay attention to the guests. We had to ask for everything ourselves every time, and we were really in no hurry and there were only three other tables occupied.

I have been coming there for 25 years and the Toilette has never been addressed. Despite the daily hustle and bustle, there is only one small Toilette for the ladies The ground is dirty and hygiene is poor I think this is really not possible and does not suit such a beautiful building. Guests get a very bad impression. Tip: have the staff check more often whether everything is clean... how difficult can it be...

Na een slechte ervaring afgelopen zomer kregen wij voor 4 personen een ontbijtbuffet aangeboden. Het ontbijtbuffet was van begin tot het eind goed! Thee en koffie werd meer dan voldoende geserveerd, heerlijke warm gebakken croissants en kaiser broodjes. Dank hiervoor.

Beautiful terrace, view and surroundings, staff is quick and friendly. A bit pricey and the toilet facilities are far too limited for such a large restaurant.

This is an unbelievable bad restaurant, we were with 18 friends. The food game so late, we had to wait so long! When the food finally came it was so little, empty plates. Not creative food at all. I had to pay €49 for two plates and two glasses of wine, extremely extremely expensive little comfort, please don’t go.

Very bad, ate with 7 people. First of all it took a long time to drink, well it was busy. Then sat down inside for dinner, table was still dirty which was reserved for us. Finally ordered food for a main course. For course soup was cold and carpaccio was mediocre. Ended up having to wait a very long time for the main course. Ultimately NOT TO EAT, day fish was a mini fish with uncooked vegetables for 23 euros! Were just able to fill a hollow molar. Said something about it and we only got an apology back, then asked for the manager and started a discussion and didn't solve anything! arrogance!!! The pasta was also snot dirty and the nachos were floating in grease. Just really bad, bad service, bad food!!

We had lunch, a cheese toastie, cheap tastless cheese on cheap white sandwich bread (where did the lovely artisan loafs we saw being brought in go?). Tomato soup was very nice but meal spoilt by cheap white bread which was going stale. No butter served so I asked the waitress who said she would get some but never came back. I got up and found some myself. When we were asked how our meal was at the end we explained the above and the waitress just shrugged her shoulders. Clearly demoralised staff who don’t care. My advice, go elsewhere!

Today we sat on the terrace at Restaurant de Waegh. Although they don't come by often, the staff is quite friendly. I had to wait a good fifteen minutes for a drink a few times. While waiting to place your order also takes a good 15 minutes. It's a shame that they still sell beer profit glasses, a vase (normally 25ml) is 20ml. Well, think about this right away, we live in 2024

This is one of those tourist traps you really want to avoid. Be aware of this place. Don't be fooled by the atmosphere. Food is mediocre. Dumb personnel, who forget your order completely, charge too much (check your bill !!!) and your beer glass is filled half. Plenty of other places at the Square. Business model is aimed at tourists who once go to this place and never come back.

A beautiful terrace in the historic center of Hoorn. However, we were very disappointed with this visit. 1. There was only 1 hideous toilet for the men, which created a long queue. 2. We had to wait a very long time for the bitterballen that we ordered at the same time as the drinks. We are definitely not fast drinkers, but our glasses were empty long before the balls were served. Because of this we were supposed to have the glasses refilled. Because the same thing happened to us a day earlier, at a different location, you wonder whether this was intentional. 3. During the checkout, the energetic, somewhat young, but already arrogant employee told us the amount to be paid, but without providing a receipt. We paid this with some suspicion and still requested the receipt. This showed that an extra consumption had been calculated that we never had. Even now you wonder whether there was intent. In all aspects of this visit it certainly did not smell fresh!

Worst restaurant I have ever eaten at. Fish and chips bad. Fish was bitter tasteless and not fresh (had been frozen). Fries dry. We also ordered a goat cheese salad and everything was missing. This afternoon 3 Italian toasted sandwiches at €6.75 each!!! ordered. My brown bread sandwich was made from the hoods??? of a loaf of bread. The sandwiches are way too expensive for the sandwiches that are much too small! A sandwich should be paid for at around €3.95, right? The toasties are not even served properly on a plate but in some plastic container! Then about the soup of the day for which you can pay € 1.00 more! Not even a piece of bread or baguette with herb butter is served with it! If you say something about it during checkout, you will only hear "sorry"! They don't care what their customers think!
