The staff is is absolutely top, as well as the food and the cozy atmosphere. Worthy a second visit in a short time.

Excellent! The service is friendly and professional. The tasting menu is worth the price for its creativity and the excellent combination of textures, flavors, and cooking techniques. We opted for the four-course menu, which alternated vegetarian and meat dishes. We didn't specify any dietary preferences, but this was possible when ordering. The wines, however, are rather expensive for the bottles and grape varieties offered.

Excellent food, but little correlation between price, atmosphere, and experience. We dined at Restaurant Johannes with the Amex Dining for Two menu. The location is beautiful, right on the canal, and from the outside it looks promising with a charming view over the water. Unfortunately, that feeling quickly fades inside. The interior feels more like a smart cafe setting than a semi-luxury restaurant. The service was provided by two young staff members who were friendly and helpful, but lacked some experience in the pace and refinement of the service. The food was neatly prepared and of good quality, but not memorable. The amuse-bouches were a pleasant surprise and added some excitement to the menu. The wine pairing, on the other hand, was disappointing: the combinations didn't complement the dishes well, and the price felt out of proportion to what you received. A single glass of wine outside the package also cost €9.50, which felt a bit harsh. All in all, an evening with some nice moments, but the total experience – from atmosphere to price level – does not match the expectations that the location and the concept raise.

Below average food, below average service, above average Amsterdam prices. Please stay away from this place.

I was very pleasantly surprised. The dishes were mastered to perfection but the dessert… the chocolate and berries cake has made me happy. The only thing is that the interior leaves to be desired. We got lucky to be able to sit outside but I will definitely wait for the warm days to go back because of the interior.

Sin embargo, en un esfuerzo por impresionar, se añadieron muchos cursos adicionales "gratuitos" que finalmente hicieron que uno estuviera tan lleno que no se pudo completar. Wir wurden im Restaurant Johannes an der Herengracht in Amsterdam sehr herzlich empfangen und haben uns sofort wohlgefühlt. Die Atmosphäre ist elegant, aber dennoch entspannt – perfekt für einen besonderen Abend. Wir entschieden uns für das 5-Gänge-Überraschungsmenü – und wurden nicht enttäuscht. Jeder Gang war kreativ, fein abgestimmt und geschmacklich auf höchstem Niveau. Besonders hervorgehoben werden muss der Amuse Bouche vor dem Dessert: ein originelles Eis am Stiel – Apfelkuchen umhüllt von weißer Schokolade. Eine wunderbare und unerwartete Kombination, die den Abend perfekt abrundete. Alles in allem waren wir rundum zufrieden – vom Service über das Ambiente bis hin zur Küche. Wenn wir wieder in Amsterdam sind, steht für uns fest: Wir kommen definitiv wieder!

Estaban reorganizando su bodega, así que tuvimos la suerte de pedir una botella por un precio muy reducido y estaba delicioso. Wir sind zufällig am Johannes vorbeigelaufen und fühlten uns von der Location und der Karte angezogen. Am Ende des Abends war es einer der besten Restaurantbesuche überhaupt. Wir haben uns für ein 6-Gang Überraschungsmenü mit Weinbegleitung entschieden. Jeder Gang war exzellent und es wurde auch Rücksicht auf Unverträglichkeiten genommen, ohne irgendwelche Kompromisse in der Qualität. Das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis war hervorragend und obwohl mir das Dessert mittlerweile eigentlich gar nicht mehr so wichtig ist, war das vielleicht das beste Dessert, das ich je hatte. Auch die Weinbegleitung war sehr gut und vor allem flexibel, man konnte auch Weine auslassen, wenn einem das zu viel Alkohol war. Besonders hervorheben möchte ich noch den Service: sehr aufmerksam - aber nicht aufdringlich und so herzlich, als wäre man bei Freunden zu Besuch. Bei der nächsten Amsterdam Reise kommen wir auf jeden Fall wieder.

We had a tremendous experience. Johannes gave us a beautiful evening. The only negative is that it took way too long between courses. We arrived at 7:15 and left at 11:45! The kitchen needs to streamline a bit. Two servers were taking care of an entire restaurant of patrons. In order to regain a Michelin star, the owner needs to double his or her staff.

Beautiful ambiance with a fantastic view of the Herengracht canal. Exceptionally good service! Good value for money. The food and service are handled by a very young and dedicated staff. The ice cream for dessert was phenomenal and, with the recommended wine, sent me into culinary ecstasy! And the few minor details that weren't perfect yet will come with experience. There are still bright spots among Generation Z!

We found this through the AMEX deal. The first 2 courses were free, with a surcharge for the other courses. The food was what you would expect from a Michelin star restaurant. Refined, well made and delicious. Service was okay, the restaurant looks nice, but it was a bit "loud" or undamped making it very easy to hear everyone's conversations.

It was a wonderful experience to get to know these tasty dishes. Stars 🌟 cuisine in a beautiful ambience. Very nice service. An absolute recommendation.

Na hier voor de vierde keer aangeschoven te zijn opnieuw een fantastische avond gehad. Het 7 gangen verrassingsmenu. Zeer mooie gerechten. Sommige met een ware smaakexplosie. We zijn niet van het zoet maar zelfs het dessert was lekker. Het wijnarrangement was een beleving op zich, waarbij kennis van zaken de boventoon voert. Kortom voor herhaling vatbaar, opnieuw. ☺️

Het eten was wederom fantastisch. Heerlijk gegeten in een heel sfeervol restaurant. Alle tijd om te genieten van de gerechten, geen gehaast…en alle aandacht gekregen.

Deuxième visite de ce restaurant gastronomique idéalement situé et au cadre très agréable et toujours aussi séduits par la créativité des plats, la qualité des produits et le travail engagé dans l'assiette. Le service est impeccable sans être pompeux. Le rapport qualité-prix est justifié. Mention spéciale pour la belle découverte d'un vin rouge sud-africain (pinotage) : Kadette 2022. Le prix des vins étant assez élevés, le rapport qualité-prix de celui-ci (pourtant un des moins chers : 50€) était parfait. Après un petit coup d'œil sur Vivino, sa note était de 4/5.

Het personeel van Johannes had bij ons een grote gunfactor, echter is een eerlijke beoordeling ook van belang, zeker om de puntjes nog eens op de i te zetten bij andere zaken dan service. De service was prima, weliswaar in het Engels maar goede uitleg bij de gerechten en vriendelijke bediening. Gekozen voor het zeven gangen verassingsmenu en mijn vrouw voor vijf gangen. Goed rekening gehouden met dieetwensen. De verassing zat er echter niet in. Wellicht zijn wij een beetje verwend geraakt, maar ik heb geen wow factor gerechtjes geproefd. Daarbij was het een enkele keer best hoog in zoutgehalte. Wat ik echt minder vind is de prijzen i.c.m. de hoeveelheid voor een Tonic en de glazen wijn van het arrangement. Ik heb nog niet eerder meegemaakt dat er per glas wijn zo minimaal geschonken werd. Het restaurant is mooi en sfeervol ingericht. Wij, en natuurlijk het restaurant, hadden de pech dat er de gehele avond geen andere gasten kwamen eten. Dat kwam de sfeer niet ten goede, jammer.

Surprised Johannes is not a Michelin starred restaurant as their food is as good or even better than the 1-stars in Vancouver!

Great service. Fantastic food (every bite was delicious) in particular the oyster was exceptionally good. The wines in the package were sublime and paired very well with the dishes. We were very impressed.

Memorable Birthday dinner couldn't fault it. A lovely meal started with Normandy oysters with champagne followed by a chefs choice 5 course taster menu. The place was tasteful with a pleasant ambience. All courses were excellent and the wine pairing worked well. The serving staff were engaging and made our evening. Highly recommended and didn't break the bank. Love to return on our next Amsterdam message. Thank you

Heerlijke gerechtjes voor een prettige prijs (55 euro voor vijf gangen). Ook heel schappelijk geprijsd bijpassend wijnarrangement ( 28,75). Mooi lokaal, vriendelijk personeel, vlakbij het Koningsplein. Kortom de drie pijlers voor een aangenaam etentje waren dik in orde. We gingen op de bonnefooi en kregen om 18.00 uur op een stormachtige woensdagavond een tafeltje. Maar op een andere dag lijkt reserveren een noodzaak, want ondanks het weer zat het restaurant later op de avond bijna helemaal vol.

Gisteravond weer een heerlijke avond gehad bij Johannes. We hadden het 7-gangen menu en elke gang was weer een heerlijke belevenis. Zeer verfijnde smaken erop een bijzondere manier klaargemaakt. Voeg daarbij een zeer vriendelijke en ongedwongen bediening en de avond is compleet

Gezellig restaurant niet te groot niet te klein dus persoonlijke aandacht VS alleen gelaten worden. Prijs kwaliteit is goed alleen jammer dat je veel geld voor water moet betalen en friandises te groot en duur. Eten was lekker en anders dan meeste doorsnee restaurants.

This restaurant is a must for us. We dine here often, and over the years the quality, taste , and presentation of our meals is consistently top shelf. We hope to continue this dining experience for a long time. Let's not forget the staff who explain each course in detail. A lovely mix of flavors.

It has been 1.5 years since I was last here and I think that is far too long. In the meantime, the interior has changed slightly and the lighting has been adjusted, which has certainly been a success: it all looks warmer and more cozy. The food had not changed: it was delicious again. I had a 5-course surprise menu and again it was all little surprises and appetizers in between. Come back here soon 😊

A lovely little restaurant by the canal. We had the seven dish tasting menu, and it was literally too much to finish! Absolutely lovely dishes and friendly service.

Quaint candlelight atmosphere. Expected a dining experience and it delivered! Chose the 5 course chef's surprise and enjoyed many delights with some nice wine. We enjoyed our surprises and our time there. Be prepared to spend 2-3 hours for the experience.

What a fantastic restaurant! Our dinner at Johannes was amazing! The restaurant is charming (located on a picturesque canal in Amsterdam), the food was outstanding, and the staff was friendly and helpful. The tarte tintin was one of the best desserts I have ever had. You need to order it 20 minutes in advance.

Chef Sam continues to delight us all with his culinary creativity and delicious combinations of flavors. As soon as you step into this quintessential canal house in the centre of Amsterdam you are warmly greeted by the attentive staff. You will feel comfortable in the subtle luxury of this restaurant overlooking the Herengracht canal. The menu continues to feature spectacular dishes with intense flavors that are beautifully presented. They have a carefully crafted wine list, this is an extraordinary dining experience in every detail. I am still surprised that they not been visited by the Michelin inspectors. They should be.

The food was good however I wouldn’t say it was excellent. We both felt like there wasn’t anything truly exciting or unexpected. Service and atmosphere were fantastic. I’d still probably eat here again as we were the last table of the night and perhaps wasn’t the best showing?

Very pleasant setting along the canals. Intimate atmosphere, attentive service without falling into a corner. I had the 6 course menu for dinner. The dishes follow one another at the right pace and there are great tasting discoveries, particularly on fish. An area for improvement: a wine list to be enriched with natural/living wine references (to provide an alternative to the conventional). But very good experience, I recommend.

Ate a 7-course menu here with my brother. The service was genuine, friendly, pleasant and as it should be. Peter made the experience great anyway. The food was also incredibly tasty and varied. We also received nice starter snacks, appetizers and a dessert for dessert that were outside the courses for free, fun and delicious! We didn't want to drink alcohol and were given surprisingly nice alternatives for this, I can recommend the bubble tea 😎🤭. Furthermore, the restaurant is in a beautiful spot and we sat outside, but it also looked very attractive inside. In short, don't hesitate and go to Johannes! 🤩

I was there 10 years ago and decided to visit it again. Didn’t enjoy the food and service as we enjoyed 10 years ago. We were told that the restaurant was sold to a different owner 7 years ago. Food is quite expensive and doesn’t worth the money we paid (over €300 for 2 people)

A wonderful restaurant with a Mechelin recommendation. The waiters are wonderful, you will be served first class. The food is comparable to Michelin - small, interesting portions, but you won't leave hungry. When choosing a secret menu of 5 dishes, we actually got 8, spent 3 hours and it was worth it!

Johannes was truly exceptional and it really felt like you were getting value for the money spent. All of the food was executed extremely well and was creative and well thought out, one of our favorite parts was the wine pairings. They all felt so perfectly tailored to the meal. One of the best dishes I’ve ever had was their asparagus! Really brilliant. Can’t wait to go back.

Took my parents there, who were visiting me from London, for my mom’s birthday. Location is great as it is canal facing on the Herengracht. Ambience is tranquil and intimate, although it was quiet on a Friday evening. Service was great and waiters were very friendly. We opened with a glass of champagne and some oysters from Normandy which were excellent. We opted for the 7- course tasting menu which was fantastic! The chef combines a mix of complex vegetarian, pescatarian and meat courses and was also kind enough to offer off menu specials on the house. Definitely recommend this spot for a nice dinner with friends, family and/or date.

Food here was exquisite; service excellent; location - overlooking busy street and canal - was first class. The roe deer in particular was delicious, but in truth everything we had (4 courses) was cooked to perfection. These places are not cheap, but the value was excellent (champagne, wine, calvados, 4 courses, amusee bouche and petit fours) at just over €300 for two.

Excellent restaurant. Would highly recommend the surprise menu. Everything was delicious. We also appreciated that they adjusted the surprise menu for my partner who doesn't prefer fish. The service was great as well and the wine pairings were perfect. One of our favorite restaurants we stopped at between the Netherlands and Belgium.

This restaurant can hold its head up high with many good restaurants in Amsterdam. Great service (especially for this city), nice calm and non pretentious atmosphere and every dish was tasty and a work of art.

The restaurant manager is too pushy in selling extras. Being a local getting charged 12 euro for tap water is not smart. The second bottle came unasked for during desert. Food was a bit below expectations. We had flat iron steak and mussels. Tasty but simple.
