Restaurant Kien in Chassébuurt

I recently had a business dinner at Kien on a Monday evening. We booked the table in the afternoon for the same night, and the restaurant was pleasantly quiet, with just a few other tables occupied. We arrived about half an hour earlier than our reservation, but it was no problem at all; we were seated immediately. As soon as we sat down, we were served a delightful amuse-bouche, which consisted of a homemade pea purée and some crispy crackers. It was a lovely start! For appetizers, my colleague chose a fennel salad, while I opted for the veal tartare, which was exceptional. For our main course, we both had a veal steak, which was equally delicious. To finish, we shared an almond cake with milk chocolate and a scoop of ice cream. While the dessert was good, it wasn't quite on the same level as the other courses, but still enjoyable. The ambiance of the restaurant is modern, simple, yet elegant, and the service was friendly and attentive. Overall, we had a wonderful experience at Kien and will definitely consider returning in the future!

Veggie options but also great steak sweetbreads fish etc. the team are real wine buffs and will give you guidance on what best to go with your meal (or just by the dish). Ive been lucky enough to go there a few times a year in the last couple of years and am loathe to tell anyone in case the secret gets out but ….. be good to yourself - try kein if you’re in town

Thoughtful from beginning to end. This hidden gem is a must visit when you are in Amsterdam. Beautiful interiors and well curated wine list match the thoughtfully created menu. The owners are present throughout the experience and their sincere approach to dining shows in every step. Can’t wait to go back. Thanks so much.

The place discriminated against us. They said they were having an event. There were a few tables with people dressed casually, and it didn't seem like there was an event going on. They simply wouldn't serve us.

Super friendly service with a cozy terrace. Fried chicken and anchovies were tasty. Bitterballen mwahh. Main courses taste good but unfortunately I was quite shocked by that small portion for the price 28-35 euros, almost the same as a starter. Unfortunately not for us anymore

I was excited to try this place given its very high rating. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. The food was lacking flavour and the portion sizes were not matching the price. The service was very slow and it was a real struggle to get anyone to pay attention to our table. The atmosphere overall was lacking any charm or warmth.

Quiet evening but very tasty food

Walked into Kien straight off the bus and it hit every note. Calm, sophisticated vibe with an open kitchen that invites you in. The staff were friendly, professional, and genuinely engaging—felt like more than just a guest. I even had the pleasure of meeting Bart, one of the owners, who was gracious and clearly passionate about what they’re building here. The food? Thoughtful, beautifully presented, and genuinely delicious. Everything felt intentional without being fussy. A seriously great start to my time in Amsterdam.

Happy to have discovered this pearl in the neighborhood. Only downside was that we had a hard time choosing from so many delicious things. The warm host thought everything was fine, so we combined some snacks and starters. Will definitely come back for the rest. Was great!

Been on a long weekend in Amsterdam and finished here and could not be happier. Real nice food but most of all our host was everything you would hope to find.

Unfortunately we experienced a mismatch in expectations and reality. Deserts and wine were good. BUT… food portions were small for the price and the taste wasn’t that impressive (compared to other highly rated restaurants in Amsterdam in the same price range). The service was slow despite being friendly and despite the restaurant being half empty.

Service always professional, knowledge of food and wine, with a smile. Recommendation: the white wine from Forradori and the red Lessona Tenuta Sella are excellent value for money and delicious with the lamb shoulder. Delicious pike-perch in between and of course the duck liver is also delicious. If I may make 2 constructive comments; speed can be increased slightly between courses and never include salmon in a surprise menu, which is not an ingredient for a restaurant like Kien

Excellent fine dining, nice glass of wine, good guests in the service and in the kitchen, started on the terrace, later went inside. Price/quality absolutely good. It was a nice evening, already half a year ago. Time for an update.

Yes, this restaurant is just really good! We ordered almost all the appetizers and none of them disappointed. On the contrary. The main courses are also very tasty. Not very large portions, but since we had quite a few starters, it was all more than sufficient. The service is fast and friendly. High chair was neatly arranged. Prices are very reasonable. Location also great. Recommended!

Al eerder in dit restaurant gedineerd, nu weer een keer met ons gezin en schoondochters op herhaling. De begroeting is zeer persoonlijk en attent. Nieuwe gerechten op de kaart maar gelukkig zijn er een aantal klassieker gebleven. Het bijzondere aan Kien is dat de klassieke menukaart met voor - en hoofdgerechten hier niet wordt gebruikt. U maakt een keuze uit kleinere porties koude - gerechten. Stuk voor stuk prachtige combinaties. Kies bijvoorbeeld uit buikspek, heilbot, venkel, zwezerik en nog een aantal fantastische combinaties. Een geweldige avond gehad, komen gauw terug. Voor ons nog steeds een dikke tien voor Kien!

We discovered a gem of a local restaurant that has a great soul. Wonderful flavours to be discovered. Refreshing atmosphere that’s local, friendly and welcoming. Loved the Boa, wonton halibut, Eel crostini (like a tasty smoked salmon) and the pickled sea bass! We spent our final night in Europe after touring Amsterdam, Croatia and Northern Italy only to come back to Amsterdam one final night before return home to Canada. What a treat of a restaurant. Exceptional and super tasty. We chose 4 vegetarian dishes (2 starters and 2 main courses) and found them exquisite. This isn't about getting full, it's about enjoying! Absolutely recommended! Addendum: after a week of various good restaurants, Kien remains at number 1!

Amazing experience! The surprise menu is well balanced with inventive flavors and classic ones as well. They are able to cater to vega consumers and they also did the favor of avoiding fish courses only on my menu, which was super accommodating of them. The wine list is extensive and well priced, I really enjoyed how complete it was. The staff was very kind without being invasive, and the atmosphere is very chic and relaxed without being over the top.

The two men create a good atmosphere at the front. Beautiful wines, but the kitchen deserves a little extra.

Correct and warm welcome. Good, attentive service and pleasant atmosphere. Tap water and a bite immediately appeared on the table, followed by a great Vouvray brut and very good bread and butter. That alone is worth 10 points! Dishes themselves, from the compact but exciting-sounding menu, are nicely conceived but somewhat on the small side in terms of portioning and not entirely balanced in the execution: for example, one too lemony (veal mouse) and the other too bland (tongue). We would have liked to have a salad, fries or perhaps just a bowl of fermented vegetables on the table to break the monotony in taste or texture of some of the dishes. The chef could perhaps taste more in the kitchen. Beautiful wines. Good Grenache dessert. We can close our hands with such a beautiful establishment in Amsterdam-West and we will be back soon!  Cheers.

Delicious food, beautiful and special flavor combinations, prepared with love and feeling

I ended up in KIEN rather spontaneously during a short visit to Amsterdam in the evening. A stylish restaurant that serves very good cuisine at absolutely fair prices. The atmosphere is very lovingly decorated. The dark ceiling creates a mood and the wooden tables offer a nice contrast to the concrete floor. The background music creates a good mood. I chose the surprise menu and I have to say I was. Consistently positive. The Tom's on the starter were an absolute hit, the meat tender and grilled to perfection. The flavors of the second course, the grilled fennel, were also really balanced. For the main course I had the halibut with cola, which fit seamlessly into the good first two courses. For dessert there was ice cream with caramel and chocolate cream. A good, personal conclusion to a delicious, very beautiful, prepared and lovingly put together menu. My conclusion, for the price you probably can't eat much better or otherwise. You can pay much more for this meal elsewhere.

I can't really be anything other than positive. I had a very tasty meal (one of the first times I could really enjoy an eggplant), the gentlemen working were very friendly and attentive and the atmosphere is good. I also thought the prices were very reasonable compared to what you got in return, definitely recommended.

I love everything about this place, the owners are super cool and created a very nice, cozy and stylish atmosphere in a beautiful space, the food is creative, healthy and delicious, also interesting and fun, great selection of wines and amazing service. What else can you ask for?

As always, we had a delicious meal, with excellent wines and attentive service. We even managed to capture the dessert in a photo; after all, the rest had already been deliciously consumed. In short, an excellent restaurant!

This is a real gem in Amsterdam. We were visiting town from London and this was recommended to us. We went for the surprise menu and it was sensational. The owner really knows his wine too - best bottle of our trip. We had our baby daughter with us, which they accommodated at an early dinner service and made us feel really welcome. Can't recommend this place highly enough.

The owners put their heart and soul into this restaurant and you can taste and notice it in everything. I have eaten here twice now and the second time I was really looking forward to the dishes I had tasted the first time. My favorites are the eel crostini, the veal tongue and the sweetbreads. All dishes have something special and the flavors are very nicely balanced. The wines recommended are also fantastic. I also think the acoustics here are great. You can hear the music, but you can also chat with your partner. The only thing is that the food is so delicious that it leaves you speechless... If you have something to celebrate, or just fancy some really tasty food, this is the place to be.

First of all the staff are exemplary, friendly, attentive and being able to speak perfect English. Making you feel very welcome. Wine list is extensive and reasonably priced. The surprise menu is fantastic, loved the Brussels sprouts, the boar was amazing the sea bass was very good and the dessert just to die for. The bread and butter were delicious. Highly, highly recommended.

Muuy buen restaurante, la comida A1, de precio no muy elevado considerando la calidad. Volvimos a ir una segunda vez, nos encantó nuevamente!!

Heerlijke gerechten, pure en spannende smaken. Goede adviezen ten aanzien van wat te kiezen van de heerlijke kaart! Ook erg gastvrij. Ik was in mijn eentje en had om 18:00 gereserveerd, maar mocht vanaf 16:30 al heerlijk schuilen voor de regen en lezen in het gezellige restaurant. De venkel was wonderbaarlijk, net als de coquilles en de “Mokum Mule” :) Heerlijk bijpassende wijnen. Hier kom ik zeker vaker terug als ik weer eens in Amsterdam ben! Bedankt voor de gastvrijheid en smaaksensaties!

Recent hebben wij ons bedrijfsfeest bij Kien gevierd. Joost en Bart weten wat gastheerschap inhoudt en denken graag met je mee. Ze zijn flexibel en er is veel mogelijk: van een bijzonder aperitief, alle tafels wijzigen tot een jazzband laten spelen. Such an amazing place, the food and service was so good from start to finish. I am gluten free and they made everything so I could enjoy it. They even cooked my own gluten free bread. Honestly such a great night, highly recommend this place.

A nice modern, yet cozy vibe hangs around KIEN. The waiters were very easy going and had great wine recommendations. The concept is a bit different than other restaurants. Although 4 course menu's are optional, in our experience, picking and mixing starter sized meals that are on offer worked out great. The absolute banger of the menu is the sweetbread. It goes very well with the beurre blanc sauce. I feel the quality of the food is generally great. One small thing to note is that not all dishes are equally "special" in my experience. For instance the charred cale was a bit bland in taste. All in all a very great experience. Keep up the good work.

Heel gastvrij, vlotte en zeer vriendelijke bediening. Start met amuse, fles water op tafel, ook mandje stokbrood. Ruim restaurant, waar we elkaar (4 personen) goed konden verstaan. En vooral: heel lekker gegeten, ruime keuze aan verassende en zeer smakelijke gerechten. Ook het publiek was prettig gevarieerd.

Helemaal verzopen van de regen kwamen we binnen, maar dat vergeet je snel. Superleuke ontvangst, snel ons eerste drankje en lekker genieten van een 4 gangen verrassingmenu. Een echt avondje uit hebben we gehad met heerlijk eten. Aanrader en komen zelf ook zeker terug.

It's rare to go to a restaurant and not be able to find fault. Our experience tonight was joy. We had the best of circumstances. A short walk from out hotel, we felt they knew we were coming. We did book but sometimes places make you feel as if they didn't know, but not here. From beginning to end, this was an unrushed dining experience. Our waiter Joost was generous with his smiles and explanations.He clearly loves his job and we were enjoying being served by him.The food is deliciously flavoursome.We took our time.The wines were good. It was an evening spent in a comforting ambience and is highly recommended to you all.

What a hidden gem! We were impressed by the high quality of the dishes and excellent service at Kien. The staffs were very friendly and the atmosphere felt cozy and inviting. The location (in a residential area in the west) may have given them some disadvantages but can also be seen as advantage if you want to get away from the crowd and tourists in the city center. The restaurant is quite spacious itself and the terrace definitely added more values. And btw they are very few in town who can make simple fried chicken so elegant and make Holtkamp bitterballen finally in the right way. It’s totally worth a visit!

What a fantastic first taste of Amsterdam this was for us. We tried traditional dishes (with excellent guidance from the waiter) and absolutely loved every flavour and texture. The service was excellent and it was interesting to hear that this restaurant basically opened a week before covid started. What a testament to the fortitude of the owners that they made it through and are now kicking big goals. Highly recommend!

Met hoge verwachtingen hebben we hier een reservering gemaakt, maar helaas is de prijs-kwaliteit verhouding hier ver te zoeken. De gerechten zelf zijn wisselend van niveau, sommigen zijn erg lekker, maar vooral de porties zijn veel te klein en veel te hoog geprijsd voor wat je krijgt.

Such an amazing place for dinner! We had the surprise menu (vegetarian for me, non-vegetarian for my boyfriend) and the food was incredible, as were all the wines they recommended. Perfect date night spot.

On-point rating 9 We had dinner on an easy tuesday night. We took the cold dishes leach terrine and veal tung both really tasty and good. As hot dish we had veal cheeks which was supergood and melts in the mouth. All above accompanied with the white house wine from languedoc which scores a 3,9 on vivino and was affordable with a 27,50 price As a dessert we took the tarte poire with the house dessert wine both superb. All by all a definite must go

Amazing food and service. The dishes were presented, laid out and explained in detailed. Waiter recommended an excellent house wine to pair with the food. My wife and I shared 4 plates, the asparagus, dutch style potatoes, lamb fillets and salmon. Two cold dishes and two hot ones. Cooked to perfection. A must do if you are in the area. Reasonably priced.
