Just had to grab some lunch for work for my employer and me. Ordered kibbeling and herring. That place already looked sticky and dirty, and he just tosses a few pathetic leftover pieces of kibbeling into the microwave without batting an eye. What fishmonger does this? It's a good thing I didn't have to pay myself, otherwise I would have walked right out. Oh right, I had to pay in cash too.

An overrated reputation. The fish (flatfish?) has no taste, and the breading is just as bad. Cooked early in the morning, it's reheated in the microwave, and they take cash... honestly, avoid it. It's better to go somewhere further away from the tourist center or to a market; there are plenty of places that fry up cod, mussels, etc.

Do not visit Amsterdam without eating this delicious local favorite.

If you like sushi you will love the herring and smoked eel. Some day I'll update this review when I have more time, but this was delicious. The man running it is a pleasure. Kind, patient, 5-star service. No pretense here. Just high quality, delicious fish in a tiny alley.

The best tasting Hering in the City. It is also the cheapest one i found. I Can only recommend a visit if you are close and craving Haring Broodje.

For breakfast, I had a herring sandwich and a white fish fry sandwich. It's a shop run by a kind old man, and the shop itself is very cute.

This is a really great place – I don't usually like fish, but of course I had to try herring in Amsterdam – bullseye! The decor is really charming and simple, the food is super fresh, I'll definitely be back on my next trip to Amsterdam!

They sell stale kibbeling by just putting it back in the microwave… yummy, man.

Raw hering sandwich, for my first time trying it, it was strangely good. The fried cod was cooked ar least 😀. The 2 nice guys serving even knew about my country and one of them even visited it 40 years ago. It is not a fancy place but it serves tasty sandwiches.

Amazing fish and kibbeling sold here. You can opt for bread or without, and they will also serve pickles and sauce to accompany your fish. It’s very tasty and super affordable! The kibbeling, a local delicacy, costs €5 while the hake filet costs €6. There are some seating areas, though it is very limited. Also note that this place accepts cash only! The nearest ATM charges you a flat fee of €4.50 regardless of withdrawal amount.

Herring sandwich, €4. The generous amount of pickles and raw onions went very well with it, and I didn't notice any fishy smell. There's a small eat-in area, but the turnover is quick, so you probably won't have to wait long. Please note that they only accept cash payments.

A fantastic and authentic experience. The shop owner was incredibly friendly, spoke several languages, and we had a fun chat while he recommended what to order. We ended up ordering the classic herring with gherkins. A must-try if you're ever in Amsterdam. We'll definitely be back on our next visit to this amazing city.

Was a random find for us, the place is quite small but food is superb. Four of us ended eating 6 dishes. Extremely reasonably priced but CASH ONLY!

Located in an alley 100 meters from the main square and the Royal Palace. A small place with only three tables for dining in. Takeout is available. The food is good. THE BAD: They microwave the fried fish, which makes it less crispy on the outside. They don't accept cards, only cash.

Tasty herring sandwiches, friendly people for a chat 10/10

A neighborhood shop with many regulars run by a warm-hearted grandfather. I've only tried the herring, but compared to salmon, it was much less fishy and just soft. It paired well with onions, and if you get a set of 2-3 pieces plus rice, it feels like a real rice thief. There were some bones, but they weren't hard or felt like they were getting stuck in your throat. When I was eating outside because there were no seats available, other tourists would ask me what I thought of it lol.

A small place in Amsterdam where you can try traditional Dutch fish appetizers at a very reasonable price. They offer freshly salted and fried fish. We, of course, wanted the traditional haring with herring. Luckily, they offer a combo for €6.50 – haring + a drink of your choice. Very convenient. You can eat inside (there are a few tables), but for the atmosphere, we went to the nearby canal and ate there. The staff is very friendly and prepare everything right in front of you.

A very peculiar place, in a small place where they prepare and serve specialties of smoked fish and fried cod. There are only two tables and a bar to eat in the place. Both the salmon and the herrings and the fried cod are all very good.

Located behind Dam Square. Very affordable prices. Fresh and delicious food. You can have fish with or without a sandwich, fried... What we liked most was the smoked eel. It's a shame it's not more well-known. It's small, but they serve you very quickly. It's run by two very friendly gentlemen.

You can eat herring, a Dutch specialty! They only accept cash, and it's a small shop, so it might seem intimidating at first glance, but the owner (who speaks English) is incredibly friendly and the food is delicious! Personally, it's the most memorable restaurant I've been to in the Netherlands, in a good way.

Came here to try a classic Dutch staple - herring in a bun with onions and pickles. It was delicious and great value for money. Despite how the herring in a bun looks, it actually tastes much better than it looks. Just a heads up - this place is cash only, so if you do not have cash on you there is an ATM around the corner. The shop itself is very small and cosy. I counted about six chairs inside if you are planning to eat in. The service was very friendly. We also tried the fried cod in a bun, which was tasty as well.

The herring was absolutely delicious. More than anything, the old man who seemed to be the owner was very kind, and I felt this was a rare place where you can easily get a taste of Holland!!

November 2025 I had herring, a Dutch specialty. The shop was run by an elderly man who seemed very kind and welcoming. I went around lunchtime, but it was empty. I ordered the herring, which came with bread! I think they only accept cash. Before eating, I was a little worried about whether it would taste good, but I loved it! There was no fishy smell at all, and the bread was fluffy and delicious! I'm glad I tried it! I was happy that the elderly owner said goodbye to me after I finished eating.

This owner is friendly, and the herring is so delicious and affordable. I'm lucky I explored this little path!

I live in the Netherlands for 5 years and this was the worst kibbeling ever I have seen. The fish were kept cold in the fridge, which is normal, but then the owner heated them up in the microwave. Yes, microwave! Then they broke into tens of pieces while eating. Although it seems one of the top fish shops in Amsterdam, I don’t recommend here for kibbeling. I cannot comment on the quality of the other food there.

Small shop in the alley. Can seat about 7-10 people. Perfect for breakfast. Uncle who owns the shop is very very nice. He speaks great English and slowly explain each of his fish and how to eat them. His fish is great! We tried several kind, but we personally love his cod. We kept going back to his shop 2 times out of 3 days that we are in Amsterdam. Only 5 Euro per dish
