Rue La Bastille is one of the coziest hidden gems in Amsterdam. It offers authentic, healthy, and delicious food and the self-made baklava is a must-try. What makes it truly special are the people who work there; their warmth gives the place a real soul. It feels like a small piece of Algeria tucked in the heart of Amsterdam. Small place serving excellent Mediterranean/Algerian/Moroccan style food.

The fantastic aroma draws you in off of the street, where the friendly staff greets you and guides you through your choices. The end result is an incredibly flavorful, beautifully cooked meal.

What a feast! Beautifully prepared dishes, taste sensations we regularly look forward to. The chicken dishes are top-notch, but the accompanying vegetables and couscous are also exquisite. The baklava is unparalleled. Of course, one service is not the same as the other, but after a while, you'll figure out which of the two brothers is best suited to prepare your meal. But otherwise, it's fantastic; whatever you order, absolutely everything that ends up on your plate is exceptionally delicious. Highly recommended.

One of the best meals we’ve had on our European trip. Everything is fresh, and cooked after you order, not microwaved. Walk in, choose your chicken or vegetarian main, rice and three sides, sit down and wait for it to be brought to your table. We had everything between us and it was massive, and delicious. Lovely atmosphere and great staff.

I've been eating Algerian couscous for 27 years and I can tell you that the best couscous of my life, I ate it in this restaurant! The price is well worth it considering the incredible quality of the products and their flavor... It's a 10/10

I came here to eat a month ago, and honestly... it was a pure delight. One of the best dishes I've ever tasted! The spices were incredible, each bite full of flavor - truly divine. Everything was perfectly cooked, super tasty!!! And what's more, the people there were adorable, super welcoming and very kind. A real gem. It's definitely one of my favorites in Amsterdam 💛

I got a package from here today and I requested heating. I waited 10 minutes for heating and when I came home the food was boiling. All the vegetables melted and ruined. Also the food was heavy and disrupted my stomach. Additionally it was expensive and at the end I really felt unhappy with this experience.

The best Algerian food I’ve had. The spices remind me of middle eastern cuisine sans the heat. For your meal, you pick one meat (depends on the day, I had chicken), one grain (rice or couscous), and three sides (I had roasted carrots, eggplant, and beets). Incredibly hearty for less than $18/person. The owner was especially helpful and inviting - the ambiance was cozy and inviting. We will absolutely be back!!

Hidden Gem in AMS! I went in guided by the amazing smells!!! The food is so rich in flavor, all the vegetable options are delish, the chicken was juicy with a crispy and flavorful skin. The rice, OMG the rice. I feel I can't find the words to describe this place, best meal I've had in years. It was 10/10. The place is small but cute, staff is super nice and kind. Can't stress enough how GOOD this place is.

Ate here today with a friend. Absolutely delicious food, service was great with a very friendly cook who was more than happy to explain the concept and each component of the dish to us. It looked very cozy inside, but unfortunately there was no space so we sat outside on the bench in front of the store. It was fine but not nearly as nice bevause, even though the cars don't drive through anymore, the Haarlemmerdijk is a busy street and at times I felt like I was taking up the sidewalk sitting there with my plate of delicious food on my lap. Ideally a bit of the decoration inside could be sacrificed for more indoors seating...! Still, overall it was a very positive experience.

If you need that perfect blend of comfort food, flavor, and quality, this place is the perfect fit. All fresh, all the time. We just stumbled upon this great spot but will make sure to return! Very small dining area but comfortable.

We were visiting from Canada doing a boat trip around the canals of the Netherlands. Spent our last day in Amsterdam and my daughter happened to walk past this small but enticing food shop. The aromas wafting out of the shop caught her attention … We wandered by after she got her food… the tasting was so delicious we had to get our own. We had a fresh made dish of tajine chicken cooked the Algerian way. We added couscous, fava beans, chickpeas and green beans which was delicious. The owners make the food fresh each day and I cannot more highly recommend this as a must stop for food in Amsterdam. They will be bringing out a cookbook sometime next year. Really looking forward to seeing how they make such wonderful food with the addition of such delicate spicing. A taste sensation!

Ridiculously expensive! Wow I feel cheated. We both had a plate of couscous with vegetables and a can of soda and the clerk came up with 46 euros! It's stupid that we didn't ask about the price up front, the concept is so simple that you don't expect such a high price. It's not a fancy place, they don't serve alcohol, and they don't have a menu but they cook whatever suits them every day. And they don't serve up a lot either, and then it goes in the microwave so there's no chef either. There are no prices listed anywhere and I couldn't find anything on the internet either. The food is fine but doesn't have much taste. I feel like they just made up a price, even when I look at other reviews that indicate a lower price.

Delicious food, super friendly owner, good service, tasty soft drinks. You come in, choose your basic dish (ours was rice or couscous), meat or vegetarian and some different vegetables and within fifteen minutes it is fresh and warm on the table. Really delicious food. Was about 20eu pp incl drink. Great price for what you get (authentic, fresh and super tasty Algerian food and a big plate full). Two things were gone when we were there, so if you want the most choice, I think it's better to come around 6 at the latest. In any case, we will definitely come back :)

We were recommended to this place and my oh my did it exceed expectations. The food is authentic and absolutely delicious, and with a great relaxed vibe. Couldn't recommend it more!

I felt we got ripped off and scammed for a Deli takeout place - 19 euro for one plate. The staff is friendly and the vibe is nice so we decided to sit inside. First of all the prices are not displayed and not transparent. So you have no clue what you will be charged. It costs 19.75 per plate. you can choose meat, couscous and veggie. Secondly, to warm the food it takes a very long time ( 15 mins) to warm an already ready meal. However I left the place feeling like I got mugged. We were charged 19 euros for a pre-made Deli food. If you walk across the street you will find amazing takeaways for less than this price. At this price point, I might as well go to a restaurant then a Deli Shop for average food.

Always great food and nice people

You will be shocked by the price. There is no menu, the man is nice. You are not informed about the price and you would not expect it to be so expensive. A can of fries drink and a small plate of rice/vegetarian food averages 30 euros. With 4 people we spent 115 euros. There is no tap water in the toilet to wash your hand, you do that in the kitchen. Crook! Definitely not recommended!!!

Great find on Haarlemmerdijk. Moroccan cuisine served in a homely cafe setting, great for couples and small groups. The food was good but was masked with too much pepper, so i know i have had better. The price was on the expensive end; 19.75 EUR for a half filling plate of rice, sweet potatoes, cabbage and chickpeas.

What a wonderful gem this place is! We were walking by and the smell wafting from this restaurant literally brought us inside. The gentleman who served us was very friendly and kindly explained the menu to us. You choose a grain, three vegetables, and a protein - simple, easy. After sitting down and digging in it quickly became apparent that this was one of the finest meals we had had in a long time. The vegetables were cooked perfectly and had such a deep and complex spiced flavour. The braised chicken was tender and falling apart - much like would you expect from beef - I have never had chicken like that before. In a world where eating out is getting more expensive and quality is decreasing, Rue la bastille is a breath of fresh air. The people working here take great pride in the food they serve and it is readily apparent. Next time we are in Amsterdam we will definitely return.

Great place, we feel like we're no longer in the Netherlands. The food is very good, the prices reasonable and a warm welcome! However, you will really have the impression of being in summer in the Mediterranean basin because it is very hot inside!

I will never stop saying that this is one of the most underrated places to eat in Amsterdam. Their ingredients are fresh, there is loads of options when it comes to sides and the fact is that it’s always a balanced meal with loads of veggies. Considering there are so many veggie options also means it’s a great place for vegetarians. But I think the single best item on their menu is the Baklava… they use honey which translates to a slightly more mellow flavor than you’d get if you used solely sugar for the syrup. It’s became somewhat of a tradition for me to go grab a bite here during King’s day, their stand is always super busy and I fully understand why! 😋
