Satchmo in Burgwallen-Oude Zijde

I reserved a dinner well in advance for our 1st anniversary. A few days before the date, I suddenly received an email stating that the reservation had been cancelled by the restaurant. I find this very unprofessional. For such an occasion, you expect at least a personal explanation, for example by phone, instead of an automated message without any reason. Subsequently, I tried to contact them multiple times, spread over several days, but they simply never answer. Very disappointing and poor service.

We went for a cocktail in the evening; the ambiance is perfect for cocktails, with warm, speakeasy-style red lighting. The Spicy Paloma was spectacular. They have sofas and chairs at the bar.

I booked table for Sunday 12 of April 18.30 and got confirmation to my email . My husband and I went there yesterday cause we wanted to try out the food and eventually have my 50s party there so that's why we wanted to see the location and try the food and guess what? it was closed and it was big signs on the windows with phone number that they are renting out the location. seems that they are bankrupt. What a shame that they don't put any information out there so we all know it is permanently close. weird enough you still can book a table and still it says it's open on the website.

They look to be permanently closed. I left a €60 deposit for the reservation but when the 6 of us arrived tonight, it was shuttered and locked. No answer to phone calls. Will contest the charge with my credit card company, but beware as they are still taking reservations

It really lost its charm. Used to be a great place, and we were regular guests. New owner and the personal touch is lost. After arriving with our reservation, we were left standing in the entrance for over 10 minutes. Not offered a place at the bar or anything. Eventually we left the place. We won’t return.

We reserved a table and paid 90 euros for it. Reservation was accepted but the place was closed ! They are not picking up the phone ever since , so now we have to contact our bank to get the money back . Needless to say, terrible experience. Also, sounds like a scam - does this restaurant even exist if they don’t pick up the phone for a week and take reservations on for Saturday when they are not even open ? I suggest to avoid it..

Nice restaurant with a cozy atmosphere and good, friendly service.

So you let me pay 16 euro for two bottles of water. 24 euro for two times bread we didn’t ask for and 12 euro for a piece of cake for my daughters birthday without asking me if I wanted that. The wine we wanted was sold out. Waiter came with a ‘good alternative’. Without telling us the price, it was €85 euro a bottle. Thats a lot of extra money charged. The main course was not good at all. Fish over done. Steak was just common. Not special. But it was special prized. And only two deserts (of three) were left to choose. Not my favorite restaurant. And than is 700 euro a lot of money.

Unfortunately, the food was very disappointing. The crème brûlée was not tasty, despite the beautiful presentation. It lacked the crispy top layer it should have. The salmon was well prepared, but the steak was slightly overcooked and the vegetables were not crispy and green. The vegetables also did not pair well with the salmon. Serve a risotto or suitable vegetables with the dishes. With the steak, you get one piece of bimi... Perhaps this establishment should pay more attention to taste and quantity than the presentation. The price is completely out of proportion to the quality of the food. Very disappointing and a shame, because the ambiance is certainly there. Sometimes places are praised to the skies, yet they are not very special. I would only recommend the cocktails here.

Takes number one spot of best steak I have had in my life. "The Satchmo BBQ Steak", Black Angus Entrecôte 250G. I dream of this steak. It was amazing. The cocktails are also amazing. I love the dark lit dining area, fantastic service and in an amazing location. I want to come back to Amsterdam just to come back to Satchmo. Can't fault this restaurant at all.

I had a wonderful meal at Satchmo. As a foodie, I was thrilled with the flavors and quality; everything was just perfect. Lovely atmosphere, warm atmosphere, and top-notch dishes. Highly recommended in Amsterdam.

I went to this restaurant on a Saturday evening. The service was well-organized and the staff were very friendly. However, the food wasn't anything special. Everything was rather bland and therefore not amazing, though not bad either. The atmosphere was very pleasant.

We went for dinner here on New Year's Eve with six people. We had made a reservation well over a month in advance and were really looking forward to it, but upon arrival, we were seated in the entrance hall, in a draft, and tucked away in a corner. Only after asking multiple times could we be moved upstairs with great difficulty. Unfortunately, the service was shamefully bad; my hospitality heart cries at this. We had to ask for drinks repeatedly and were simply ignored several times. There was no oversight, no attention to the guest, and not a single apology or explanation. The food itself was fine, but the timing made no sense: one dish took forever to arrive, while another appeared on the table much too quickly. In the end, we skipped dessert because the whole experience was so bad. This is not how you want to spend New Year's Eve; I will not be returning here.

The worst experience of my life. The food arrived three hours late, the waiters walked right past us without even glancing at us or asking if we wanted a drink. They had a special New Year's Eve party which turned out to be a complete disaster, and to top it off, we had to pay a CHF 25 deposit per person for the reservation despite the terrible service. A real disgrace!

Food was poor at best, unfortunately the prawns were off, not fresh as advertised, the short ribs were undercooked and tough to eat, a shame as we had high hopes for this place

I really don't recommend it. Expensive and disgusting, and they make you wait 45 minutes for a dish that doesn't even fill you up. The food is expensive, disgusting, cold, and there's a hair in it. Sorry, but I don't recommend it. Run away! 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

We checked the reviews before going in, but even though only 3 or 4 tables were occupied, everything took a long time, and what arrived was simply cold! We were told there were gas problems. They did deduct one dinner from the bill and received an apology from the chef, but we wouldn't be returning. It's a shame, otherwise it looks quite cozy.

Very disappointing! We were eating in Satchmo last week. Food was cold and really not good, nothing special, but extremely overpriced. Tables were wobbly, the place feels run-down, not even the tap in the women’s restroom works. The one star is for the barlady (blue eyes, dark hair) She was super charming, made excellent off-menu drinks, and even gave us great tips around Amsterdam

My friend reserved Satchmo for his birthday dinner and it did not disappoint! The atmosphere was wonderful! We had a high top table by the bar. They had a nice wine list and a great drink menu. We started with their Pulled Pork Croquettes which we are still talking about. They were so delicious. For my main I had the Short Rib and it was also really good. Melted in your mouth good. Service was good and designed to allow you to enjoy your company and each course. Something for Americans to note.

Great restaurant. The food was well presented and ingredients well thought and perfectly combined for a burst of wonderful flavors to the pallette. The dj and the music was AWESOME!!!! We entered the restaurant to Luther Vandross "Glow of Love!!!" A true classic! Kamal, our server, gave us great service however it would help if there was a host and busser because as a server it's difficult to be amazing when you have to sit people and clean the tables all on your own while still serving. However, he made do and we were still pleased. But they could use more support staff.

Thought the negative reviews must be incidents. They are not. Had to wait for 2 hours for main course. Then when it finally came they only brought my wifes main course and forgot my mine. Asked two different waiters. They left and did not return. Then when we complained with the manager and told him we were going to leave all of a sudden my main course arrived, now 2,5 hours after the starter was served. We paid (not for my main course) and left. We have never experienced anything like this.

The service was long, dishes were ordered repeatedly. The main courses arrived an hour late. They made a mistake in our order, and the much-desired fries were missing. Finally, a waiter came and even offered a discount, which the restaurant manager, after specifying that they had told us about the discount, said when we paid, 20 euros less, as if we were begging. Strange place.

We were sitting at a bank and the worker invited us to drink something. We did not habe money so he gave us a cacao for free. All in all the cafe is pretty good and has nice service.

Nothing is explained about the food and drinks. The food didn't arrive at the same time, and the squid was rock hard. Not recommended. It seems like they can't handle the crowds. 1 word: chaotic.

Absurd door policy by a group of overzealous, bored bouncers. I was about to be turned away until my beautiful female companion arrived. Then, suddenly, I was allowed in. Loud place with a vulgar crowd in expensive clothes.

It was a mixed experience. Didn’t have a reservation so were sat outside which was fine. Kamal was our server and he was great, very attentive. Food was fantastic. Where it was let down was, we asked if any tables freed up inside if we could move in as it was quite cold and the heaters didn’t work. Apparently no tables freed up but when I went to the bathroom there was probably 20+ seats available. Quite poor in that regard

We didn’t have a reservation, but Kamal welcomed us in with a smile and quickly found us a spot outside. His energy was warm, genuine, and so attentive the entire night- the kind of service that makes you feel like you belong. We ordered five dishes to share, and each one was full of intention and flavor: • Gumbo – a rich, savory start with deep flavor • Eggplant – perfectly crispy outside, tender and flavorful inside, surprisingly one of our favorites! • Sea Bass – fresh and light, though a bit more subtle • Short Rib – melt-in-your-mouth tender, deeply satisfying… a must-have! • Octopus – beautifully plated and deliciously seasoned Kamal made our last night of a 12-day Europe trip unforgettable. He elevated the entire experience, and the food was the cherry on top. Thank you for making our final night in Amsterdam so special. We’ll be back!

Expensive and disappointing. The food was oversalted, the meat was dry, and the acoustics were unpleasant. We were brought the wrong bill three times, even though there were only two of us. Plus, they falsely advertise it as an Argentine steakhouse during Restaurant Week. We won't be back.

Anna was a great host. She was entertaining and funny.

The place is nice; we sat inside and had brunch. We felt that if they charge a price per person, they should either give us two desserts (since we were given only one to share) or include a drink. The cocktails were good, but unfortunately, the waiter kept disappearing, and we had to ask the bartender for things. He always pointed out that he was 'just the bartender,' when serving a bit of water takes no effort. This clearly showed that the division of tasks among the staff was not working well.

My go-to place in Amsterdam! Incredibly delicious food, great atmosphere, and delicious cocktails.

The food I ordered was okay (we ordered seafood). The vibe of the place however is great and clearly the bartender is an expert. The drinks (even non-alcoholic) were delicious and so well crafted.

We had a mixed experience here. When we arrived, there was confusion about our reservation — we had booked through Dining with the Stars, but the staff thought it was via AMEX. Despite our name being in the system, it took some back-and-forth with different staff members before we were seated. They also hadn’t noted the dietary preferences we submitted with our booking, though the kitchen did make adjustments, which we appreciated. We felt a bit rushed throughout the meal, which made it hard to fully enjoy the experience. Not sure if this was due to the earlier confusion or just the general atmosphere. The food was good, but there’s definitely room for improvement. Overall, an okay evening, but not quite what we had hoped for.

We walked into Satchmo just looking for a quick drink before dinner—but ended up staying way longer than planned. The place itself is beautiful, with a stylish atmosphere and a great energy, but what really made the experience special was Anna. She came over with such a calm, confident presence, and somehow managed to convince us (without trying too hard!) to go for the XXL Pornstar Martini. Let’s just say… she was right. It was fun, over-the-top in the best way, and surprisingly delicious. Anna was friendly, professional, and genuinely seemed to enjoy connecting with people. She made us laugh, gave great recommendations, and created one of those small unexpected moments that stay with you. Would absolutely go back—and next time, we’re staying for dinner too.
