I would give it 6 stars if I could being of Guyanese descent this was exactly like the food I used to eat during my childhood the price was fair the portions were huge and the taste was excellent. The owner was very friendly and it was a very nice place for a date.

update 2025: Best roti in amsterdam, nowadays i get roti here a few times a month, always good and fresh, don’t understand why it’s not crowded. Never been disappointed past two years! Wish they would make the lights and atmosphere more cosy to sit there, for now i do take away mostly. They have the best comfort food when i don't feel like cooking. first review 2023: we got roti’s (1 veg 1 chicken) for take away and it was delicious.

The atmosphere and food were good. Only for a rotten lamb with an extra pancake and an egg, not one fried in masala, for 25 euros, it was very expensive, but good!

Really good food, have had Surinamese food a handful of times before but this was the best one. Flavours very rich, the curry goat as well as the fried noodles were really good!

How is this place NOT packed! There should be a line out the door! The food is 100% and the drinks are perfect!! I’m happy I found it Olin day one of my trip, because I will be back everyday!

The food wasn't appetizing, and I was expecting it to be good. I had a bara with cod and a portion of bakabana with peanut sauce. I had the bakabana with peanut sauce first; from experience, it would have been removed from the oil and placed on a plate to let the oil drain. When it arrived on my plate, it was so hard it looked like it had come straight from the microwave; the outer edge of the dough was too hard. And then the bara/cod: this bara wasn't fluffy and freshly fried. It was so hard, and with cod inside, the dough crumbled right off. It was like it had also come straight from the microwave! No, I didn't enjoy my meal here, though that's just my opinion and experience. I've eaten at countless roti shops or Surinamese stores where they sell bara, but nevertheless, my in-laws (of Hindustani/Surinamese descent) found this to be perfectly fine, just as it should be. Tastes differ, but for me...sorry, but I didn't enjoy my meal. So there you go!

Highly recommended, truly Surinamese, actually 5.5 stars. A warm and friendly welcome. A reasonably large and clean restaurant (including restrooms). Relaxed atmosphere and (cheerful) service. Wide selection of (very tasty and original) Surinamese dishes (and desserts). This is highly recommended, a slice of Suriname in the Netherlands (atmosphere and food). We will definitely become regulars.

First roti I ever ate, and it was a 10!

We spontaneously decided to have dinner here and were more than delighted. We had never tried Surinamese cuisine before and it was a real experience. The roti plates – we had chicken curry and dried cod – were excellent! The waiter (owner?) was very friendly. The price was more than fair for several drinks, starters and main courses. The restaurant is definitely worth a visit!

my first time having surinamese food and it was so so so good! it was really tasty, some of the best food i’ve ever had, plus the staff was nice and helpful in explaining how the food is supposed to be eaten! can’t recommend it enough! will be coming back to amsterdam for this :)

As an update: I was very touched by the restaurant's attitude to address the problem I raised and revisited the place. I had a good experience this time. The soy sauce chicken (Ketjap kip) was good, although a bit salty for me. One good thing in my opinion is that the restaurant is outside the typical tourist area in Amsterdam, which means that it is the type of place which locals would also go for meals, and can be more price worthy. I will likely going back again when I am in town some future summer and try the Parbo beer (I wanted to, but the bottle is 1L so would be too much for me travelling alone). ---- The place smelled good, food was impressive, and the staff appeared friendly. Things remained really satisfactory until the time of payment: When I went to the counter, I found out that they increased everything's price for one Euro without updating the menu (another customer was having a dispute with the staff). Also, they don't tell you about it until when you pay -- no one told me when giving me the menu, when I ordered the food, when asking whether I wanted any drink, and even after I finished my meal. To clarify, the prices look fair to me even if with that extra Euro added, and I just paid without going into any further argument (I was leaving the country the next morning, and the one Euro wasn't worth any trouble). I choose to believe that the staff didn't intend to deceive any one, but their practice of providing misleading information to customers disappoints me a lot. I have been to nearly 30 countries, and have travelled in the Netherlands for more several times, never encountered such a situation before. This dining experience ended up among my worst for sure. I understand that things may be getting difficult for small businesses, but that's not, and should never be, a justification. Before I overheard the dispute, I was thinking a lot about revising the place in a summer and tasting their Surinamese beer. Now I really have to reconsider that thought.

Had a great meal here after a long travel day. The chicken curry plate with added eggplant was incredibly flavorful and just what I needed. We are here once again the night before we left.

The most authentic Hindustani dishes I've had downtown. No weird, gravy-soaked custom dishes. Just good, home-made, honest food for a good price.

I came all the way from Haarlem to eat the lamb roti (filled with potatoes), it's absolutely delicious! The roti is freshly baked! Just the way it should be. I highly recommend eating here the way we Hindus do! Swaagat khaana!

We had the rotis, which themselves were delicious. But the service and atmosphere were poor. We waited half hour to get our food and getting the bill at the end was difficult, even though the place was practically empty. There was also no tap water.

Just delicious Surinamese food with a (ginger) beer. Don't expect a hipster diner, but clean and super friendly service!

An excellent new restaurant on the block. Has such great flavors and what an amazing blend of familiar tastes from Chinese, Indonesian, Indian and European cuisines. Best meal I’ve had in Europe (after 1 month here!)

Words can’t describe how great the food and atmosphere was, but if I had to choose it would be heart-warming! Roti was very tasty and filling! The waiter kindly explained us what the vegan options are and assured they’re prepared separately from the meat dishes :) Will come back again for sure!

The best Surinamese restaurant in Amsterdam. I don't know where to start, so today: the cod, full of flavor, not too salty, not too sweet, not too spicy, not too dry, not too sticky, perfect! The bara tempeh (with garter). A meal-worthy amount. With perfect, sweet-spicy chewy tempeh. Fresh garter and that bara... divine. My husband had the bara chicken curry. Meal-worthy and Michelin-star worthy. Scènes is unsurpassed! Good service too! Cozy atmosphere. Our favorite!

It was my first time trying Surinamese food and I was very pleasantly surprised. I could say that this was some of the best food I had ever tried. The owners were very friendly and helped me choose what I would like best from the menu. The prices were also very reasonable. Although the restaurant looks very unassuming from the outside, it is a must try!

Nice staff, unfortunately the vegetarian saoto soup tasted like ditch water. And they forgot the salad and fries with the hot wings. The roti was good.

First time getting food here. Unfortunately it was quite disappointing. Employee indicated that everything was freshly baked, bara was overcooked and you could smell that. Baka bana was tasty, but the added satay sauce was little and unfortunately not good in terms of taste.

I'm really happy with this case. First of all, it is a roti shop with high-quality roti, vegetables and masala meat. Secondly, the roti shop is designed as a beautiful restaurant and is therefore ideally suited for a nice meal with several people. Thirdly, the staff is very friendly and there are innovative concepts on the menu (such as baka bana vanilla ice cream). By the way, it doesn't take that long before you get your food, you can hardly expect to get the food as quickly as you get fries at the snack bar.

Such a lovely restaurant with kind servers! The food was 1000/10 so delicious and you can tell it’s made fresh. We tried from different categories and all was fantastic, every time we visit Amsterdam will definitely eat at this place again!!

Went to eat with my family. It was delicious.

Located in the heart of Amsterdam you can find an unique restaurant which is super friendly and even cheaper compared to many other places . We went there to see a football match and stay there for few hours but for the good vibes and the friendliness we end up staying the whole noon . If you are a group of friends and wanna watch a match or just have some chill time without been disturb by others tht is the place !

I happened upon this restaurant almost by chance with a friend of mine. The two managers made us feel at home almost immediately by accepting our request to watch a football match. The chicken roti was really good. Highly recommended!

Amazing. It was very quiet when we were in, and all 3 of us absolutely loved our meals. The gentleman serving us was very helpful, offering to explain dishes if we needed, and we didn't feel rushed when trying to make our minds up. The portion sizes are large, so bear this in mind when ordering! But the quality is fantastic and the value for money is great. We got the Chicken Satey bami and nasi as well as a chicken roti plate to share. The chicken satey took a little while to get to the table, but our server had told us it was being freshly prepared on the grill, and it was so worth the time we waited! My partner, who was unsure of the style of cuisine as he had never had it before, said that he would have that chicken satey again! If you are in Amsterdam this is one of the places I would highly recommend you visit. We will when we come back!

I am Mexican and I can say that the food is delicious and at a good price, everything is very clean, a pleasant atmosphere for a good chat, the lamb is finger-licking good. Super recommended.

Food was excellent and portions were large. This was my second time eating here and food and service are always good.

Waited 40 minutes for our order. No compensation. No communication. The food is certainly very tasty, but it's a real shame about the service.

Best Chicken Curry in Amsterdam

Food was very tasty. Been twice, but waited more than an hour twice when it wasn't busy. So not recommended if you are in a hurry.

This is a juice shop. We waited 20 minutes for the beer and 2.5 hours for the amazing food we expected. It took a while until we could pay.

Surinamese food in the US is largely non-existent, so this restaurant caught our eye while vacationing here in Amsterdam. The food was incredible — the roti bread was unlike anything we had before, and the meat and vegetables that came with it were excellent. The staff were very friendly and hospitable. Would wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant — probably the best food we had in Amsterdam altogether!

Food was delicious with a huge portion size too. However, we had to wait over an hour despite being one of two parties in the restaurant. It appeared only one person was working in the kitchen and prioritizing delivery orders. The server barely acknowledged the delay. We were also unknowingly charged for tap water which was quite frustrating

We called ahead to make sure the place was open, rolled in and two other people were there eating strangely enthusiastic about comparing it to Guyanese cuisine, weird vibes, and when we ordered he told us he’d charge us 1,50 for tap water because the “boss says” Illegal Rip off Avoid So sad, I thought the 4.7 rating with more than 70 reviews would mean it’s ok Nope

This is really incredibly delicious... Words are not enough. Roti is put down, curry chicken, and the smell of garlic, spices, really next level. Best roti I've eaten, and I've eaten a lot. Flavors well balanced, very fresh. Usually with roti tent it tastes like it was made yesterday and after eating I get a dip in energy in my body. This gives me energy after eating which is a good sign. Recommended!

My family and I went to Amsterdam for a few days and had the chance to come across this restaurant. We never before had tried any kind of cuisine close to the one of Suriname. For us it was a very pleasurable experience where we enjoyed new flavors and dishes. The services was phenomenal also, very kind and open to explaining us about the dishes!

Amazing food! If you haven't tried Surinese food before, you have to come and try it here! Lamb curry bami is phenomenal as well as the chicken curry roti. Recommend trying Parbo beer (from Surinam). I hope I can have Surinese food again, but it is hard to find in the USA. We'll plan another trip back to Amsterdam to visit Soenes!
