There is a wide variety of choices, and it is especially nice that you can also choose from different roti flatbreads, such as with potato or yellow peas. The dishes are flavorful, and you can tell that attention is paid to the preparation. The service is also very friendly and welcoming. If you are looking for tasty, authentic roti that tastes like homemade, then you have definitely come to the right place. We had a delicious meal and will absolutely be back again. Highly recommended!

The food is generally good, but the prices listed on the menu are not accurate. Be prepared for a surprise when the bill arrives. I don't think it's right that a dish priced at €13 suddenly becomes €18 without informing the customer. These are deceptive and dishonest practices. Despite the very friendly service, I will never set foot in this restaurant again; they take advantage of their customers.

This is my first time eating roti And the owner of the place and the staff was amazing and the food was great and the ambience was great. I felt comfortable coming in by myself as someone from another country. I highly recommend trying this place out, and it was very good in the amount of food you get for the price was amazing

OMG! Has to be the best Bara in all of Amsterdam! I had the lamb and it was totally filled and delicious - super tender in every bite! My mum ordered the Roti Vegetarian with pumpkin as an add on and we split a bitter lemon. Really great value as bill was under €30 for the two of us and we walked away with happy (but not overfull!) tummies. Also a shout-out to our host who was very nice and welcoming. Recommend and def will return!

BE CAREFUL! The food was good though the prices in the menu aren’t correct. We had to pay more than it was written in the menu. Staff doesn’t mention it in any way, bad service! UPD. Regarding the response from the restaurant. After we paid, we understood that we paid more than was written in the menu. The menu includes small type clause that prices could possibly change. No one from the staff said anything upfront, only AFTER we paid and saw the difference and returned to clarify. Originally I put 2 stars, but minus one after the response from the owners who tried to gaslight me. Honestly, it’s not that difficult to put a sticker with correct prices on top of the menus if you don’t want to reprint it. But the whole situation felt like scam.

The food was really good, I'm Argentinian and I loved it. I recommend the roti and the saoto.

This is the perfect restaurant for anyone wanting to try Surinamese food for the first time! The atmosphere is very basic, but the food and service are excellent, and the prices are really affordable for everyone! PS: For those who love spicy food, I’d recommend asking for their sauce. It’s incredibly spicy, and you’ll be begging for more!!

I was kind of a regular customer back when this was still affordable working-class food. Today was a total insult. I ordered a chicken roti roll—a rare treat for me—and received a tiny, overpriced wrap stuffed with potatoes and beans, completely devoid of chicken. When confronted, management claimed: “We always have new cooks, everyone leaves quickly”. This reveals the core problem: bad owners who exploit and mistreat their workers so heavily that nobody can bear to stay. On top of that, they denied basic tap water. In Amsterdam, treating water as a paid commodity rather than a basic human right is pure capitalist greed. Roti belongs to the working class and immigrant communities who built it. Stop hijacking our heritage to turn it into an elite commodity for Amsterdam's wealthy class. This is extreme gentrification. The owner handed me a full-price receipt, only offering to remove one paid water as a “courtesy”. It perfectly illustrates his mindset: prioritizing petty pennies over respect, worker dignity, and basic culinary integrity.

The food is really good. The front man Anil and Dilip are too friendly. I Often come here for their testy food and peaceful environment

Based on the good reviews, I went to eat here. Additionally, it is within walking distance for me, which is of course a plus. Unfortunately, this was the worst chicken bami I have ever eaten. The noodles were very soggy and therefore far too soft. The chicken was so overcooked that the meat was already partly falling off the bone and was lying in a generous amount of ketchup sauce. Furthermore, I found the dish quite salty. Unfortunately, this is not a place I will be returning to.

What an incredible spot! My brother and I grew up around the corner and to have a place like this in our old neighborhood 30 years later is such an amazing thing. The barra with lamb was the best I’ve ever had and their roti rolls could feed a family of 4. The fries were also very good! We waited about 30 minutes for a very large takeout order but could sit on their terrace with a draft beer on a Wednesday night at sunset. Really lovely! The owner is also such a nice person! Great hours as well, open late for dinner. Please go, it’s so so good!

Ordered via UberEats. The chicken was very dry / burnt. The saoto had little flavor. A tip: wrap the roti in aluminum foil instead of plastic wrap. Melted plastic isn't very tasty.

Such a great experience at Soenes! Was my first time trying Surinamese food and they were super helpful with deciding what to order. Flavours were bold and delicious! Location was central and the restaurant itself was very clean and welcoming. Will come again :)

Is this the best Surinamese restaurant in Amsterdam? I highly suspect so. There is a high variety of authentic Surinamese dishes, snacks, desserts and drinks. The flavors are amazing and the food is fresh. The restaurant is very clean, but may actually feel sterile and that is not really what you would expect from a cozy Surinamese restaurant. But please do visit this place: the food is to write home about. The staff is very considerate, patient and helpful.

I somehow got out of my way and found this restaurant on good timing, not too full. Starting from the menu you understand it's another, place that came from afar, it was a mix of various plates, each something special. The ambience inside is quite romantic with low lights and the details were also there. Food was excellente and rapid.

This is simply a gem. The roti is fantastic, and the bara with mango sambal is simply amazing. Flavorful sambal that's not too spicy but burns perfectly. The curry is richer in flavor than at other places I've been. This is fantastic, highly recommended 🙏🏼.

I would give it 6 stars if I could being of Guyanese descent this was exactly like the food I used to eat during my childhood the price was fair the portions were huge and the taste was excellent. The owner was very friendly and it was a very nice place for a date.

update 2025: Best roti in amsterdam, nowadays i get roti here a few times a month, always good and fresh, don’t understand why it’s not crowded. Never been disappointed past two years! Wish they would make the lights and atmosphere more cosy to sit there, for now i do take away mostly. They have the best comfort food when i don't feel like cooking. first review 2023: we got roti’s (1 veg 1 chicken) for take away and it was delicious.

The atmosphere and food were good. Only for a rotten lamb with an extra pancake and an egg, not one fried in masala, for 25 euros, it was very expensive, but good!

The food wasn't appetizing, and I was expecting it to be good. I had a bara with cod and a portion of bakabana with peanut sauce. I had the bakabana with peanut sauce first; from experience, it would have been removed from the oil and placed on a plate to let the oil drain. When it arrived on my plate, it was so hard it looked like it had come straight from the microwave; the outer edge of the dough was too hard. And then the bara/cod: this bara wasn't fluffy and freshly fried. It was so hard, and with cod inside, the dough crumbled right off. It was like it had also come straight from the microwave! No, I didn't enjoy my meal here, though that's just my opinion and experience. I've eaten at countless roti shops or Surinamese stores where they sell bara, but nevertheless, my in-laws (of Hindustani/Surinamese descent) found this to be perfectly fine, just as it should be. Tastes differ, but for me...sorry, but I didn't enjoy my meal. So there you go!

Highly recommended, truly Surinamese, actually 5.5 stars. A warm and friendly welcome. A reasonably large and clean restaurant (including restrooms). Relaxed atmosphere and (cheerful) service. Wide selection of (very tasty and original) Surinamese dishes (and desserts). This is highly recommended, a slice of Suriname in the Netherlands (atmosphere and food). We will definitely become regulars.

First roti I ever ate, and it was a 10!

We spontaneously decided to have dinner here and were more than delighted. We had never tried Surinamese cuisine before and it was a real experience. The roti plates – we had chicken curry and dried cod – were excellent! The waiter (owner?) was very friendly. The price was more than fair for several drinks, starters and main courses. The restaurant is definitely worth a visit!

As an update: I was very touched by the restaurant's attitude to address the problem I raised and revisited the place. I had a good experience this time. The soy sauce chicken (Ketjap kip) was good, although a bit salty for me. One good thing in my opinion is that the restaurant is outside the typical tourist area in Amsterdam, which means that it is the type of place which locals would also go for meals, and can be more price worthy. I will likely going back again when I am in town some future summer and try the Parbo beer (I wanted to, but the bottle is 1L so would be too much for me travelling alone). ---- The place smelled good, food was impressive, and the staff appeared friendly. Things remained really satisfactory until the time of payment: When I went to the counter, I found out that they increased everything's price for one Euro without updating the menu (another customer was having a dispute with the staff). Also, they don't tell you about it until when you pay -- no one told me when giving me the menu, when I ordered the food, when asking whether I wanted any drink, and even after I finished my meal. To clarify, the prices look fair to me even if with that extra Euro added, and I just paid without going into any further argument (I was leaving the country the next morning, and the one Euro wasn't worth any trouble). I choose to believe that the staff didn't intend to deceive any one, but their practice of providing misleading information to customers disappoints me a lot. I have been to nearly 30 countries, and have travelled in the Netherlands for more several times, never encountered such a situation before. This dining experience ended up among my worst for sure. I understand that things may be getting difficult for small businesses, but that's not, and should never be, a justification. Before I overheard the dispute, I was thinking a lot about revising the place in a summer and tasting their Surinamese beer. Now I really have to reconsider that thought.

Words can’t describe how great the food and atmosphere was, but if I had to choose it would be heart-warming! Roti was very tasty and filling! The waiter kindly explained us what the vegan options are and assured they’re prepared separately from the meat dishes :) Will come back again for sure!

The best Surinamese restaurant in Amsterdam. I don't know where to start, so today: the cod, full of flavor, not too salty, not too sweet, not too spicy, not too dry, not too sticky, perfect! The bara tempeh (with garter). A meal-worthy amount. With perfect, sweet-spicy chewy tempeh. Fresh garter and that bara... divine. My husband had the bara chicken curry. Meal-worthy and Michelin-star worthy. Scènes is unsurpassed! Good service too! Cozy atmosphere. Our favorite!
