Tolhuistuin in Volewijck

Review: Tolhuistuin I recently had a delicious meal at the Tolhuistuin. We had just come from the movie at EYE and were a bit early. Because the kitchen doesn't open until 5:30 PM, we had to wait a little while. We ordered a beer in advance and looked at the menu, which was printed on the placemat. To be honest, we didn't find the menu very clear; it took quite a while to find what we wanted. The dishes were arranged from left to right and from cold to hot. That might make sense to regulars, but if you don't come here very often, it is a bit confusing. In the end, we were able to make a choice. I had the pork satay (3 skewers). The satay tasted delicious, but unfortunately, there was very little satay sauce on the skewers. Additionally, I would have really liked a portion of fries on the side with my meal, but unfortunately, they don't sell those here. I really consider that a missed opportunity and a downside; I prefer just plain fries without sauces with my meal, rather than poached potatoes or another potato dish. We did find the prices to be on the high side: €14 for 3 satay skewers €6 for an alcohol-free beer Well, in Amsterdam these days you pay top dollar for the hospitality industry! The service was generally friendly and good, but even there a minor issue went wrong. When we ordered another beer during our meal, the employee said he would pass it on to a colleague. Ultimately, this didn't happen, meaning my boyfriend didn't get a second beer. Of course, he could have just walked to the bar himself to order it, but it could have been handled just a little better. Conclusion All in all, the location on the IJ is beautiful; it is a truly fantastic setting! As a tourist and as an Amsterdammer, you naturally pay a premium for that. The food was tasty, but due to the somewhat smaller portions and the high prices, the price-quality ratio was a bit disappointing. Additionally, it would be a real plus if they simply put fries on the menu. Despite these points for improvement, I had a nice evening and really enjoyed the atmosphere!

Damn, this is the third time in 3 months that I’ve sat on your terrace! An experience that never disappoints. We were sitting perfectly in the shade, but when two guests left an excellent spot in the sun, we asked if we could perhaps sit there? No problem, barely 2 minutes later we were able to join them. The kitchen wasn't open yet, hmm. "But we do have a nice selection of bar snacks!" - said the sweet lady. So, off we went, ordering the Gyoza. Without realizing it, they took longer to arrive than the crew is used to, whereupon proactive apologies were made. Friendly! Then, mega-sweet that the wait staff came by to take our final order at exactly 5:30 PM, so that we could sink into the plush seats of the EYE at 6:30 PM. So much proactivity, kudos. Sunshine, breeze, fine wines, a cocktail, those delicious burratas (!) and, as the showstopper, the Limoncello Cheesecake. Man oh man, see you again soon! Without a doubt.

The outdoor seating area is lovely in the summer. For Ankara residents, it's like a place similar to If Sokak or Ochi. We highly recommend it; go, have a beer, and enjoy yourself!

We had reserved for 19:45, but the table wasn't available until 20:30. The food itself was bad and of deplorable quality. I won't be coming back here.

Delightful. Shared plates concept. Excellent food and drink. Everything we ordered was beautifully presented, flavorful and delicious. Extremely reasonable prices. Marginal service - young/inexperienced/uncoordinated/inconsistent wait staff. Make reservations to be able to sit outside.

The place is very nice! they have spectacular terraces with a beautiful view of Amsterdam. We drank caipirinhas and ordered to chop baked cauliflowers and fried chicken. I think the chicken lacked a little more cooking, but overall very nice place. Recommended!

Poor service from rarely seen waiters for aesthetically-displayed small amounts of food for high prices while sitting on hard folding wooden chairs.

I went to a concert on what is usually called Paradiso Noord, but it is in fact part of the Tolhuistuin. somehow the different businesses are not separated in Google Maps. As a concert house it retains neither the character nor the acoustics of the original Paradiso. It has the acoustics and the character of a shoebox. The light show is more appropriate to a wedding DJ event. During summer evenings, the air-conditioning is not sufficient. All in all, this venue should be called Inferno.

Nice place, so-so food (the artichoke is the most popular dish: I don't recommend it!). Gin worth trying.

The restaurant here is straight fire. Had the Minestrone soup, salmon sandwich on brioche for lunch. Noticed the extensive dessert menu, but the kitchen was closing. Buuut.. Couldn't stop thinking about the Pornstar (passion fruit) Panna Cotta, had to come back. Absolutely delivered, it was sensational. Gorgeous views. Super friendly staff. Could come back here again and again.

Stunning location... which I look back on with pleasure. Had a delicious (and affordable) meal... and enjoyed sitting by the IJ. Friendly service... yes, really pleased.

By far one of the best concert experiences I have ever had the pleasure of going to. Probably greatly helped by an amazing artist that is a fantastic entertainer, and a crowd that was vibing just right. :-) The venue is high quality, smallish and intimate, split in a bar area that is sound insulated from the main concert area, while concert area had its own bar and all the things a concert venue needs. Highly recommend going to this venue if your favourite artist happens to stop by.

Food was not bad. Beer was alright. Service took ages and it didnt seem that busy for 4 waiters. I could be wrong though.

So you might have one of the most beautiful locations in Amsterdam. A sunset like no other. And yet your selection is incredibly mediocre. We totally get that an IPA isn't available everywhere, but it's not a mango sour. It's disappointing that we couldn't pay with cash.

A very large and modern restaurant with very unique dishes. I really liked the fried cauliflower. The service was also excellent.

If they are busy just go somewhere else. I stood in the "wait here to be seated line" for a long time without acknowledgement from anyone working. I nice "we'll be with you in a moment" would have been nice. After I was finally seated nobody ever came back to acknowledgement me again. I sat there for a long time before I got up and left and went to the Butcher restaurant next door where the food was good, the service wonderful, and efficiency was better.

The food is novel, tasty and diverse. Ordering two dishes per person satisfies enough. Wine was fine. The Tolhuistuin dish for two was the creative cherry on top. I even took a picture. The ambience is convivial and stimulating, partly because of the nice view. The space is spacious and the light soft. The waitress was helpful, clear and nice. We felt comfortable.

It was a very interesting Science & Cocktails. Nice location for all sorts of things. You are there right off the ferry.

For the first time in the small hall. Kind of like a mini Milky Way. Good small stage, but the musicians really came into their own.

Great event space in Amsterdam Noord - enjoyed the atmosphere and experience! The event halls are spacious and nicely decorated, the restaurant is also very spacious, though the food isn't the best price and quality wise. Will certainly be coming back to more events here!

The Tolhuistuin is a pleasant place that I've gotten to know in various (positive) ways over the past few years: - During the North Holland Province's corporate event at your location, I led the scooter tours for the groups from your location. - I went skating upstairs with you, thanks to Karianne's Skatedance. - During the private tours of Lex and the City in Amsterdam-Noord, I talk about the history of the area around the Tolhuistuin in general, and your location in particular. (Sometimes we rent bikes from you for the participants.) Sometimes the tour group invites me for a drink with them afterward on your terrace or in the restaurant. - After my private skating lessons by the water (diagonally in front of the Tolhuistuin and also behind it), we sometimes go for a drink on your terrace. - I also visit the Tolhuistuin privately. (Which is a good sign.) I took two of the three photos around your location. The third one was taken by my student on skates and is behind the Tolhuistuin.

Small event venue with an intimate atmosphere.

The food and service were ok. Nothing crazy, but for the price thid was a very good experience. Tastes were nice, but it feels like the dishes had no connection whatsoever. Because we were with a group we had a set shared dining menu. Definitely good value for money. Would come back again!

That blond bartender with curls still has a lot to learn, the other one, Lucius I think his name is, is a legend, the food is great

We went to a concert here, and I really liked that you could stand upstairs, which was easy to reach. If you're in a wheelchair, you'd have to take the stairs. Overall, everything was great!

Excellent service and a lovely view of the IJ, but the lunch was less than mediocre. Dishes that seemed to have come straight from a ready-made supermarket package, only to be far too cold, so that the last traces of flavor had vanished.

The ambience is nice, the service is good, and the food is delicious. Nice location, accessible by ferry boat.

Last Monday we dined at the Tolhuistuin, and it was a wonderful experience. We were able to sit down without a reservation, which was a plus. The shared dining concept with a wide variety of appetizers is highly recommended; this allowed us to try a bit of everything. The service was very friendly and attentive. There was a slight mishap with the dessert; we didn't get what we ordered. But when the correct dessert arrived, the "Tolhuistuintje," it all made up for it. Not only did it look lovely, it was also incredibly delicious. All in all, we had a great evening and it's definitely a place to return to!

This mini boat of massaman curry for €9.80 is about 15cm long and 5cm wide. Dutch coziness at its finest... the idea is to share your dishes, but then you have to order a bit more... I understand why now 😂

The “nachos” dish on the menu unfortunately didn’t match what you’d expect. It was just a few plain tortilla chips served without cheese, sauce, or any toppings. That’s a bit disappointing, as this shouldn’t really be sold under the name “nachos.” The rest of the experience and service were okay, but it might be better to list this dish as “tortilla chips” instead, so expectations are clear. The location is nice.

Nice little (pop) venue. Easily accessible by ferry from Central Station.

I sat there in utter amazement at two cubes of silken tofu, about 5 centimeters long, topped with hoisin sauce and 5 spring onion strings, for which I would pay €8.50 at the end of the evening. Tolhuistuin has become incredibly expensive in recent years.

Extremely overpriced and they serve the beers not in a glass. Asking for a glass and they answer "Only upstairs" and walk-off. €6,20 for a beer without a glass is a bit crazy!

I was here for the Anees concert. It was a super chill place, with friendly young staff, a great atmosphere, a nice, intimate venue, and good sound. The bar staff was a bit slow, though. But overall, a great experience in a beautiful location.

Very disappointed in the loaded nachos. Too wet. Guacamole was creamy and abundant but no flavor. A glob of melted cheese was unappetizing. The salsa was sweet. Ugh. Consider a recipe that has more appeal. They were really the worst nachos I’ve ever had. Even hot sauce on the side (which wasn’t offered) would not have rescued these slimy nachos.

The food and ambiance here is very nice! Had a great night and tried some interesting things. But the staff were talking very nasty about people. We sat next to the place where the servers were standing, and they were all the time talking about how weird people were or deciding with rock paper scissors who would have to go to the table with the “weird” people. So it was a very bad experience on that part.

We sat outside, but the restaurant inside is beautiful. The terrace is lovely with a view of the IJ and Central Station. There's a wide selection of tasty small dishes at reasonable prices, but if you're really hungry, it can get quite pricey. It shouldn't spoil the fun. It's a nice place. The staff is friendly, but could be a bit more attentive.

It's very well located, reasonably priced, right next to the canal, right after getting off the ferry. The service takes ages... ages, and it's not particularly busy!

Restaurant is located at a very good spot: opposite Amsterdam Central Station, facing IJ/ships movement, very nice and spacious terrace but inside it's cosy and comfortable too. Nice, fast and helpful staff. Good food, lots of vegan and vegetarian options that cost less than the animal options. We had a great time at a fair price and will definitely be back!

Great place for an outdoor drink when the sun is shining! Very large garden area with seats and parasols. Order from your table and the service is very efficient. Great views across the water and plenty of people watching. You can access it very easily from the ferry which runs continuously and is free! Had a very enjoyable evening here.

Unfortunately, there's often a lot of litter in the grass next to the bike path and between the tables. It would be great if Tolhuistuin took more responsibility and cleaned up the litter around and on the patio. 🙃 We emailed about this, but unfortunately, Tolhuistuin indicated that this is a municipal responsibility, because the litter keeps returning due to the trash bins along the IJ. Yet, it's right next to their patio and contributes to the appearance of their venue. Waste is a social problem that many Amsterdam residents face, particularly due to the impact of the new deposit system. You would expect an event venue that benefits so much from the neighborhood to want to be part of the solution. It's disappointing that this isn't the case.

Bad staff that does not pay attention to the customer.

Nice restaurant/cafe with large terrace overlooking the water. Easy ordering with QR code. Delicious bitterballen. Behind the restaurant is a nice garden where activities are regularly organized.

Cozy and close to a park and there are free boat crossings to the heart of Amsterdam. There you can walk almost everywhere without a car. Enjoyed a Wodka Mul on the terrace. Chatted a bit and left again, have a nice week week people.

What even are those nachos. They don't even look appetizing, the least you could do is make them taste good. Very mid - absolutely do NOT recommend I do like ordering via QR code and the prices are decent for Amsterdam!

My partner and I went to the Luvcat concert in Tolhuistuin on April 21st, 2025. Overall, we are very satisfied and would like to visit the cultural center many more times. The concert hall offers space for (estimated) around 200-250 visitors. Anyone who has experienced concerts of this size knows that the atmosphere is very pleasant with a manageable number of guests. The volume was appropriate; If you still need hearing protection, you can buy it locally. Drivers have the option of parking in the A’Dam car park, approximately 150 meters away. The lockers at Tolhuistuin cost €3.50 per person, which is above average in comparison. Unfortunately, the entire cultural center is designed exclusively for EC payments, which is both contemporary and now common in the Netherlands. However, since there are also concerts taking place that attract guests from abroad (and for general convenience), the additional option of paying with cash would be a great advantage for all visitors.

I was looking forward to an Aperol Spritz all day, but when I got one here it was so bad. There was no sweetness to it and it came in a regular glass rather than wine glass. Disappointing. There was no decaf soda there, not even sprite. They had 7-up but it was sugar free.

Food arrives in drops, as do drinks and dessert 30 minutes later. Very poor customer service. A place NOT to go to.

Tolhuistuin is a beautiful cozy location in Amsterdam North opposite Central Station. Easily accessible with the free ferry. We simply received tickets for the Sungazer concert via email, so no hassle with TicketMaster or anything. When you enter, you have to find where to go, but you can't miss the cloakroom. The lockers can be rented per evening for €2 and you can pay by card. The room is great, the bar is in the room so you don't have to leave the music to have a drink. And just a tray for more than 4 cups (are you reading AfasLive?). Good acoustics and good sound. But that can differ per performance of course... 5 stars, we will definitely come back.

Was here for a concert in September 2024. The location is very good and easily connected and you can reach it by ferry. Very nice staff!

Easily accessible from Amsterdam central. Free with the boat that sails to and from. Well organized in terms of lockers where you can put your coat, there are more than enough. :)

The New Year's Eve party was a lot of fun! Unfortunately, towards the end I didn't feel well and had to go to the emergency room. Very nice that I could come here. A curly redhead knew exactly what to do. Thank you for the good care!

really delicious food. This week they had a completely vegetarian/vegan menu with small snacks. everything arrived quickly, even though it was full. even on a Monday evening.

Service is horrible. They forgot our orders and came very infrequently to take orders. At some point, we had to wait 30 minutes before we could order and then they told us the kitchen was closed. We constantly had to remind them that we ordered something, didn't get any cutlery, asked three times for the bill. They just could not remember anything.

I went here for a concert and had a really nice experience! The place inside is not too big, but there still plenty of room. The girl behind the bar and also the lady who scanned my ticket were nice ad polite and they smiled, which is a big plus! The dancefloor itself like I said is not too big, but that made the concert more intimite and there was a nice i lnteraction with thw band. The acoutics are good. The ligjting was good. I will be back for sure! The only thing which could be better is a bar at the dancefloor. But it might take up too much spave I don"t know. It didn't bother me

Bad service, can't see it, you have to make a reservation in a two-hour time slot, why?! We were ordered to close the laptop when my girlfriend showed her holiday photos, and the "hostesses" meant it, what an inhospitable and arrogant restaurant, I will never go there again!

Had dinner on Thursday evening at THT restaurant and what a nice place!! Last minute a place available for two people. I thought it had a very friendly atmosphere. It is a large space where many people can eat, but the acoustics are absolutely fine. And the food was delicious! The menu had Spanish, Italian and Asian appetizers. Something for everyone. We went for two rounds with four snacks and two desserts. That was more than enough. With a bottle of wine, we spent 100 including tip. (they are not the best photos, but to give an idea :))

Had dinner in the THT restaurant and afterwards a great concert by the Bygones: indie folk by Josh Turner and Allison Young with music from various decades: jazz, classical, rock, country!

Ambience very nice, service very friendly and quick, taste great. The prices are quite high considering the portions, it was already a house number for our salads and bread. Was more like the size of an appetizer.

Pleasant location for meetings, such as a company presentation. Good catering, friendly service. Parking is sometimes an issue due to the many road closures and poor signage where parking is available.

Loved this small and intimate music venue. Came especially from UK to see an acoustic show by Richard Hawley which was superb. Great view and sound. Excellent bar service and reasonably priced. Super easy access via free ferry from Centraal station. Will visit again.

Specifically regarding the cafe/restaurant. Employee wages are paid with customers money. If you don't provide customer service, the income is reduced, and your job becomes even worse. If you hate customers you should find a new job. If you don't notice an issue with your employees behavior, good luck. Tolhuistuin was a nice place to visit before Corona.
