TOOTJE in Binnenstad-Noord

I have been to Tootje several times now and really enjoyed myself the last time. That is why our visit this time was unfortunately quite disappointing. There were no fewer than four staff members present for a relatively small restaurant, yet we were barely served. We had to ask for the menu and to order drinks ourselves several times. When we wanted to order another drink later, the girl even reacted quite angrily, which made us feel a bit hesitant to ask for anything at all. We found that very unfortunate, especially since the atmosphere during previous visits had been so nice. We had also ordered a speculoos latte, but unfortunately, we really didn't like it. Fortunately, the matcha and the avocado sandwich were very tasty. We certainly enjoyed those!

Warm and attentive service with freshly prepared, delicious breakfast dishes. We had croissants with jam, yogurt and fruit, an acai bowl, pancakes with speculoos, orange juice, and various coffees. In short: we'll be back!

Delicious breakfast, great view. The toilet and the path leading to it were dirty and run-down, but that was okay for us. We would still come back for breakfast! Therefore, we recommend it.

I visit Tootje regularly and sometimes even stop by specifically for an iced latte, because I really like the one there. The coffee is generally just very good, and otherwise, I have actually always had a pleasant experience. The only thing I find disappointing is that I have stopped by around 16:30 more than three times now and was told that everything had already been cleaned and that no more coffee could be made. I understand that cleaning needs to be done at some point, but if the place is open until 17:00, I find 16:30 very early to take the coffee machine out of service already. If I were to come at 16:50 or 16:55, I would understand it much better. Due to work and such, I unfortunately cannot always come earlier. Precisely because I like Tootje's iced latte so much and sometimes stop by specifically for it, it is a shame when I can no longer get coffee at 16:30. Otherwise, I am really satisfied with Tootje, and this is actually my only point of criticism. Hopefully something can be done with this!

Reasonable prices, good food, but busy

A chill and feminine-friendly brunch spot, but the food was a little disappointing. I recommend the caramel cream iced latte; the waffles were a bit too sweet and just average, nothing special. Sitting outside, chatting with friends and enjoying the breeze while having coffee is very comfortable.

A cute little café! The food and drinks were excellent, and I've never had such good avocado toast. The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming. There's seating both inside and outside, but when we were there, the outside table was full. I highly recommend it!

What a great experience. I was in Leiden for a day trip, and stumbled across this cafe. It has a really god vibe, the coffee was great and the food was amazing! I had the hummus toast, and the balance of flavours, and fresh ingredients was so yummy! It was a really good find!! Loved it.

Tootje exceeded expectations in every way during our visit. The food quality was outstanding across the board, the orange juice was remarkably fresh, clearly squeezed just before serving, and the iced matcha latte was beautifully balanced, neither too sweet nor too bitter. The avocado toast stood out as a highlight, generously topped and perfectly seasoned, while the pancakes were fluffy and cooked to perfection. Beyond the food, the service was warm, attentive, and genuinely friendly, which added a lot to the overall experience. The atmosphere felt relaxed yet polished, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely breakfast or lunch. Considering the quality of ingredients and the overall experience, the pricing felt more than fair, excellent value for money. Overall, this was a flawless visit with nothing to criticize. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a top-notch brunch experience.

This was our first stop as soon as we arrived. Lovely spot to sit outside and have coffee and cake. We had the Apple pie with cream and the triple chocolate muffin. Everything was great and not too sweet. Would come again!

We ordered a medium iced latte and a medium iced americano. However, the americano was delivered in a small size. When I walked back and indicated that I had ordered a medium, I was given the absurd argument: "We put a double shot in it, so it counts as a medium." My goal was not a small coffee with a double shot, but simply a medium americano in terms of volume. It is not surprising that a business that cannot even make this simple distinction and operates with this logic gets taken over. The reactions, attitude, and behavior of the staff actually speak volumes about the quality here. Absolutely not recommended.

Seemed like a popular cafe, full of locals dining when I was there. I just popped in for an Ube latte because…… why not? Disappointed, didn’t taste anything like ube. Tasted like watered down milk, definitely not worth the EUR5! It looked good but lacks any flavor, not a hint of ube. Would not recommend ordering that. Service was friendly, and they looked like they had an interesting menu. I made a mental note to return for breakfast. Too bad the ube latte wasn’t any good so I didn’t end up returning. Sorry, based on that purchase alone, it’s a one star for me. Was just overpriced milk. Perhaps their coffee and food is better.

Although I personally found the tables too close together, it's a nice location and a great place to have a delicious lunch or breakfast.

I didn't think the matcha turned out well. The temperature was fine, but there was simply too little matcha powder in my portion. I tasted more milk than anything else. I received the portion in a small glass. My partner had a white chocolate pancake. It looked well-topped. She liked it. I didn't find the menu interesting and didn't order any food.

Relaxed atmosphere. It was quiet now, but it can also get quite full and then it is (pleasantly) noisy. Small, cozy, and pleasant spot for breakfast, coffee, or lunch. Games on the shelves. Great service. Pancakes are a generous portion that will keep your stomach full for a while. Super tasty fluffy pancakes and the topping is just as delicious. Separate tea menu with very tasty options. All kinds of delicious luxury coffees available to order. Also homemade treats; the Oreo brownie and muffins are especially delicious.

Honestly, it was good and the staff is very friendly. But it was sooo long. The restaurant isn't very big so it shouldn't take 40mn to be served. I took a walk around while waiting.

The food was tasty even though we didn't order much, the nachos were very good, I recommend them, and the service, well, they were very nice and cheerful so that was nice, and the atmosphere was very cozy.

This café was an absolute highlight during our time in Leiden. The pancakes were honestly some of the best I’ve ever had, so fluffy, flavorful and just perfect. The whole place has such a warm and welcoming atmosphere. You can really feel the attention to detail, which makes it a true feel-good spot. On top of that, the staff were incredibly kind and made us feel right at home. If you’re in the area, I can highly recommend stopping by. We would definitely come back!

It was my everyday coffee when I lived there. Is the best café in Leiden. Coffee is really good quality, the staff is always really kind and friendly.

The cappuccino was good, hence the two stars. The rest was underwhelming; everything is quite small and cramped, but the service is a disaster. My wife and I sat there for an hour and twenty minutes, ordering two cappuccinos, a croissant, and avocado toast. The waitresses were very slow and inattentive; they never came to our table on their own initiative. We always had to actively approach them to get anything.

Everything is fresh and lovingly prepared. Tastes fantastic! The service is attentive and very friendly.

What an amazing find! Absolutely love this place. First, the service is so friendly - people are super nice there. Second, the food is delcious and good size portions. We had the speculous pancakes, and yum - they had the cookies, crunched cookies and the speculous cream, but also a healthy serving of berries that tasted fresh and flavorful. It was a great balance and the pancakes themselves were really good, fresh and hommade style. We also had spicy hummus sandwitch and wow. I did not expect such a combo - mangos, hummus and chilli flakes - to work so well together, but it did. Perfection. The only thing I would change is adjusting milk proportions in the coffee. It was good, but too milky - a cappuccino tasted like a latte. We liked the flast white best. Overall, it's an amazing place and we'll be going back for sure.

Nice small location, awesome coffee, hot chocolate and pancakes, Jogurt could‘ve had more granola in it, but was good as well! We went there with our 7-year old, who had fun with the board game selection and enjoyed her hot chocolate with Marshmallows on top.

I came here both mornings before my language exam and tried the flat whites, apple pie, blueberry muffins, and blueberry banana bread. Everything was delicious! Such a lovely and cozy place with wonderful owners. They wished us luck for the exams, and since they truly meant it, I want to let them know here that we passed! Thanks for the sweet smiles and the caffeine rush. 10/10, highly recommend!

Cozy lunch café with many options. Extensive breakfast menu. The avocado smash sandwich was delicious. Friendly and hospitable staff. Only drawback: the toilet is only accessible via stairs.

The most delicious dishes, made with passion and served with love. I had the hangover toastie—man, oh my, it was delicious. The kids had the pancakes (lots of them and delicious) and the avocado bread, and they were thrilled. The various coffees and smoothies were also excellent. A keeper for our Leiden trips.

My boyfriend and I had a delicious grilled cheese sandwich. Friendly staff. It's a fairly small place, though, so you need to be prepared for crowds.

Nice place and good coffee. Unfortunately, the pancakes aren't fresh, but microwaved. Not a problem in itself because they taste okay, but then you can't charge 15 euros for them. The lack of heating is also a bit stingy. Everyone was wearing their coats. Have them made or buy a fan so people don't freeze when it's cold!

Wasted 50 mins at this place for a simple drink. We were sitting for 15 mins already and no one came to take our order so we got up and ordered at the counter. Waited another 35 mins. Still no order. We went to ask about the status and they ask us, “Did you order already”?

A nice little place with a great atmosphere. It's a bit cramped inside, but it's well-populated. Friendly service and beautifully presented dishes. My girlfriend and I were there for the first time, and we agreed it was definitely worth a return visit.

We went there because of the good reviews, but we were very disappointed. The coffee cup was dirty, the coffee was weak, and the apple pie tasted awful. The service wasn't very friendly either.

We stopped here for a hot drink. They serve a great variety of coffees and teas. The hot chocolate and Masala tea were delicious. I enjoyed the many fun posters on the walls

This place is soooo cute and the staff is simply amazing. I had apple pie and cappuccino. It was definitely one the best apple pie i tried in the Netherlands, apples were still crispy and delish, home-made whipped cream was perfect match. And coffee is really good as well! Will definitely come back

We had breakfast here 2x while visiting Leiden and both times were great. The staff if so friendly! Thanks for a lovely time. My only critique is that I wish the yogurt and granola had more granola. It is a small place so it fills up quickly. Get there when they open to assure a table. Toilets are upstairs which would not be ideal for those with limited mobility

Wonderful cafe in the heart of Leiden - small, cosy, with fantastic coffee and sandwiches. Their sandwiches are built up with fresh ingredients and a good understanding of texture/flavours. Go here to chill, play a tabletop game, or just for good food. The service is friendly. We’ll definitely be coming back. Hope they have vegan desserts/pastries soon.

I really don’t know how this place could get a 4.8 star rating. We went there for our first and also last time… The spot looks cute from the outside, but the dirtiness of every single cup, cutlery or plate was unbelievable! We ordered a coke and the glass had stains all over it with some water and black specks of dirt in it. The cutlery had the same thing. The worst though was when we were served the food. By this time we didn’t even really want to touch it. We ordered pancakes, that came served on a plate that still had avocado sticking on it, to make sure you would know what the person before you had been eating… We also had an acai bowl, which I taste tested but it was honestly really bad. It just tasted earthy and not at all how it should‘ve.

A wonderful café on the edge of Leiden's pedestrian zone. The staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. The menu is small and perfectly adequate, with something for everyone! From avocado bread to a bowl or a delicious cake, there's something for everyone. The drinks are delicious, and everything is fresh and clean!

The woman was very nice, but the restaurant was incredibly dirty. The other employee's clothes were truly filthy, and the kitchen looked grimy. The interior was just too cluttered to be truly enjoyable, and the restroom was a bit of a wreck. A nice idea, but too cluttered and dirty. So, after a (too sweet) coffee, I didn't stay for dinner. I'm genuinely curious if the inspector would approve.

We had a wonderful meal at this lovely restaurant. We sat on the terrace. It's on a busy road with lots of traffic, but that certainly wasn't a nuisance. It was wonderful to watch all the passing traffic while enjoying our delicious lunch (with great music in the background). The toasted sandwich was delicious and a generous portion. The lemon and ginger drink I had was also delightful. We truly felt like we were on vacation. Owner Caresse is super friendly and welcoming. Highly recommended for everyone!

I was looking for a nice spot for lunch in Leiden while we were exploring the city. I stumbled upon Tootje on Google Maps. At first, it seemed impossible to eat there because it was so busy. But despite being short-staffed, the owner really went above and beyond to serve her customers, always with a smile and a very friendly atmosphere. We were so glad we got a table because the food was absolutely perfect! Highly recommended! And the coffee is truly delicious! We really enjoyed it. You can feel the passion and dedication in everything at this small but cozy spot. Thanks for taking such good care of us. We'll definitely be back! Oh, and by the way, the banana bread is also truly delicious! 🥰

Heartfelt recommendation! 😍 We spontaneously found this place in Leiden while searching for well-reviewed breakfast places. A real hit! It's really tight and cozy inside. This makes it very cozy, intimate, and personal. The service is very attentive and friendly – you're greeted right away and immediately registered. The food on the other tables makes your mouth water 🤤 We had "Spicy Hummus" and "Pancakes Oreo Crumble." For drinks, we had hot latte specials, "Speculoos" and "Tony's Chocolonely Latte" – a treat! Oat milk is offered, but cream remains cream 😄 On day two, we chose Tootje again. The "Spicey Hummus" open sandwich and the "Muhammara & White Cheese" grilled sandwich – we were impressed again on the second day! My husband also ordered an orange juice – it was freshly squeezed. So, all in all: an absolute recommendation! Should we ever find ourselves in Leiden again, Tootje will now be our first stop for pure enjoyment! A feast for the eyes – and a satisfying meal!

Relaxing breakfast on a Monday morning. We had the iced chai latte and latte machiatto for drinks, which were delicious. For food (sadly no pictures) we had the avocado smash, which was very tasteful with herbs and fresh tomatoes. Our other dish was the oreo pancakes, which was perfectly balanced between the fresh fruits, fluffy pancakes and crumble sweetness of the oreo crumble and chocolate sauce. Definitely recommending both of them.

We stopped by spontaneously — 4 adults and 2 babies — and were warmly welcomed by the owner, who immediately helped us find a table. The atmosphere was super friendly and relaxed, and we felt right at home. The food was amazing: the toasts were perfect, coffee was delicious, and the açaí bowl actually tasted like real açaí — which is rare and very appreciated! What really stood out: we were allowed to use a private room to change our babies, which is not something you can take for granted. So thoughtful and kind. The place is ideal for couples (mostly 2-person tables), but there’s also one table for 4 — so small groups are definitely welcome too. Delicious food, perfect service, and a genuinely lovely team. We’ll definitely be back! 💛

If I would start a café, this is exactly the vibe I want to create! Tootje is a really small cafe located on a corner of a kinda busy street, but the second you enter you get sucked into their cozy artistic bubble. I got to try two of their sandwiches, the avocado and the spicy hummus, which were both equally pretty. They tasted even more delicious than they looked. They also have this shelf filled with games to play, very kids friendly! Unfortunately I wasn't a big fan of their coffee though.

SERIOUS food storage AND SAFETY concerns. On a Saturday morning, we ordered 2 pieces of the apple cake. After having some bites, we noticed multiple spots of GREEN MOLD on it (really small, so you don’t see it right away) and white furry mold as well. After we showed that to the waitress, she suggested having another piece “on the house”, but there were none, so we got another cake instead (hoping that it was fresh..). The waitresses said “sorry” multiple times and tried to fix the situation by proposing us another desert. BUT MOLDY CAKE is UNACCEPTABLE! and we still ended up paying around 8eur for our coffee, hoping that we will not have food poisoning tonight. I’m putting 2 stars instead of 1 for their effort to fix the situation.
