A wonderful café on the edge of Leiden's pedestrian zone. The staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. The menu is small and perfectly adequate, with something for everyone! From avocado bread to a bowl or a delicious cake, there's something for everyone. The drinks are delicious, and everything is fresh and clean!

Cute little corner shop. Always busy, but well worth the wait! Delicious sandwiches! Great cappuccino, and the Chai Latte is also highly recommended! Ordering does take a while, though.

The woman was very nice, but the restaurant was incredibly dirty. The other employee's clothes were truly filthy, and the kitchen looked grimy. The interior was just too cluttered to be truly enjoyable, and the restroom was a bit of a wreck. A nice idea, but too cluttered and dirty. So, after a (too sweet) coffee, I didn't stay for dinner. I'm genuinely curious if the inspector would approve.

We had a wonderful meal at this lovely restaurant. We sat on the terrace. It's on a busy road with lots of traffic, but that certainly wasn't a nuisance. It was wonderful to watch all the passing traffic while enjoying our delicious lunch (with great music in the background). The toasted sandwich was delicious and a generous portion. The lemon and ginger drink I had was also delightful. We truly felt like we were on vacation. Owner Caresse is super friendly and welcoming. Highly recommended for everyone!

I was looking for a nice spot for lunch in Leiden while we were exploring the city. I stumbled upon Tootje on Google Maps. At first, it seemed impossible to eat there because it was so busy. But despite being short-staffed, the owner really went above and beyond to serve her customers, always with a smile and a very friendly atmosphere. We were so glad we got a table because the food was absolutely perfect! Highly recommended! And the coffee is truly delicious! We really enjoyed it. You can feel the passion and dedication in everything at this small but cozy spot. Thanks for taking such good care of us. We'll definitely be back! Oh, and by the way, the banana bread is also truly delicious! 🥰

Heartfelt recommendation! 😍 We spontaneously found this place in Leiden while searching for well-reviewed breakfast places. A real hit! It's really tight and cozy inside. This makes it very cozy, intimate, and personal. The service is very attentive and friendly – you're greeted right away and immediately registered. The food on the other tables makes your mouth water 🤤 We had "Spicy Hummus" and "Pancakes Oreo Crumble." For drinks, we had hot latte specials, "Speculoos" and "Tony's Chocolonely Latte" – a treat! Oat milk is offered, but cream remains cream 😄 On day two, we chose Tootje again. The "Spicey Hummus" open sandwich and the "Muhammara & White Cheese" grilled sandwich – we were impressed again on the second day! My husband also ordered an orange juice – it was freshly squeezed. So, all in all: an absolute recommendation! Should we ever find ourselves in Leiden again, Tootje will now be our first stop for pure enjoyment! A feast for the eyes – and a satisfying meal!

Relaxing breakfast on a Monday morning. We had the iced chai latte and latte machiatto for drinks, which were delicious. For food (sadly no pictures) we had the avocado smash, which was very tasteful with herbs and fresh tomatoes. Our other dish was the oreo pancakes, which was perfectly balanced between the fresh fruits, fluffy pancakes and crumble sweetness of the oreo crumble and chocolate sauce. Definitely recommending both of them.

We stopped by spontaneously — 4 adults and 2 babies — and were warmly welcomed by the owner, who immediately helped us find a table. The atmosphere was super friendly and relaxed, and we felt right at home. The food was amazing: the toasts were perfect, coffee was delicious, and the açaí bowl actually tasted like real açaí — which is rare and very appreciated! What really stood out: we were allowed to use a private room to change our babies, which is not something you can take for granted. So thoughtful and kind. The place is ideal for couples (mostly 2-person tables), but there’s also one table for 4 — so small groups are definitely welcome too. Delicious food, perfect service, and a genuinely lovely team. We’ll definitely be back! 💛

If I would start a café, this is exactly the vibe I want to create! Tootje is a really small cafe located on a corner of a kinda busy street, but the second you enter you get sucked into their cozy artistic bubble. I got to try two of their sandwiches, the avocado and the spicy hummus, which were both equally pretty. They tasted even more delicious than they looked. They also have this shelf filled with games to play, very kids friendly! Unfortunately I wasn't a big fan of their coffee though.

SERIOUS food storage AND SAFETY concerns. On a Saturday morning, we ordered 2 pieces of the apple cake. After having some bites, we noticed multiple spots of GREEN MOLD on it (really small, so you don’t see it right away) and white furry mold as well. After we showed that to the waitress, she suggested having another piece “on the house”, but there were none, so we got another cake instead (hoping that it was fresh..). The waitresses said “sorry” multiple times and tried to fix the situation by proposing us another desert. BUT MOLDY CAKE is UNACCEPTABLE! and we still ended up paying around 8eur for our coffee, hoping that we will not have food poisoning tonight. I’m putting 2 stars instead of 1 for their effort to fix the situation.

We came in on a Sunday morning for breakfast. Full of enthusiasm because it had a good rating on Google. The seating was, to put it mildly, ‘cozy’. Making tea took some time. Then we decided to take the breakfast special. Croissant with yoghurt and gravy. We had to wait more than half an hour for this. The quality was average, good, but not special. The girls, very nice, but not super efficient.

Delicious sandwiches eaten and the pancakes were also tasty. The atmosphere scored a bit lower because of the interior. Very small cafe with busy interior and the chairs are not very comfortable, but despite that enjoyed it enormously and very sweet girls who like to serve you.

The five of us had lunch here last week. The meal was great and this is due to the good atmosphere, friendly staff and of course the delicious food. The combinations are very good and not what you find everywhere. I really enjoy that! The staff was also very friendly! If you are in the area, definitely go for something to eat and drink!

I wish I could have tried the food…and I would have if I someone took our order. After initially being seated and asking a few questions about the menu we asked for a minute to think about our order. After that no one came for over 25 minutes. I understand being busy, but it takes only a few seconds to stop by and say “sorry we are busy and will get your order in a moment.” Instead we both tried to make eye contact with employees multiple times and no one would come our way. As more time went on we decided to get a few drinks to go. The drinks were good, however weren’t what we ordered. We ordered an iced chai but were given an iced coffee instead (coffee was mid). Rose lemonade was very good though.

We had a fantastic baby shower, thanks to Tootje's great organization! The high tea was delicious, carefully composed and fully tailored to the wishes of the pregnant woman and other dietary requirements, such as gluten-free. The festive space above the restaurant was perfect – cozy, quiet and with a great atmosphere. Everything was very well organized and the hospitality was top notch. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to celebrate a special occasion!

It was a very sweet little café. They have very delicious food. The sandwiches and pancakes were incredible good. The owners/staff were so kind.

If you can see through the mood of the staff, it is a very nice place. Very tasty meal. Many orders were thoroughly reviewed and assessed and people sighed and complained about specific customers sitting further away. My order was also discussed followed by "I hope she can't hear this by the way!". (They were right, by the way: the decaf coffee looked like water.) Fortunately, the other girl serving was very nice and helpful. But next time I'll walk a block further.

Hygiene Concerns! I recently dined at Tootje Cafe and had a mixed experience. While the food was good and the staff was friendly, I was disappointed to see a bottle of cleaning products and a dirty rag left on the table where the visitors were sitting. It made me question the restaurant’s hygiene practices. Not only is this unappetizing, but it’s also a health concern. Cleaning supplies should be stored properly, and rags should not be left where customers eat. I hope the management takes better care of these details because the food and atmosphere were otherwise enjoyable. A little more attention to cleanliness could make this a great dining spot.

This is the most comfy coffee place that I’ve been in Leiden. Actually in whole Nederland. There are many options to choose there. I recommend the dirty chai latte and the apple pie. Also, the croassaint is a good option to choose.

this is our favourite cafe in the world - literally! we travel to leiden every two or three months, because we love the city, and we fell in love with your wonderful cafe! we go there almost every day when we're in the NL. the food and drinks all are delicious and we tried every sort of chai latte (kardamom rocks!, the others too ;)) tot ziens in de zomer :)

Update: Now in English. I would like to share my constructive review of this place. While the food was of good quality (normal/small portions) and the price was average, there are areas that could be improved. The lunch menu could be expanded, as the current options feel more suited for a pre-lunch or brunch. Regarding the restaurant itself, I strongly recommend that the owner and staff reconsider the minimum level of cleanliness required. There was visible dust on the shelves, windows (which were old and almost broken), chairs, and tables. Additionally, the menu and floor were noticeably dirty, covered in some kind of syrup or liquid. We were shocked when my friend received a dirty straw with her drink. Thankfully, the staff replaced it when we requested a new one. How is it even possible that the waitress is preparing food at the same time as serving coffee customers, without even washing her hands in between? I hope this review helps improve the place.

Little gem of a place……..full of character. The Hangover Toastie was delicious and the Yogurt pots looked very good……I’d rerun here without question and work my way through the menu. A lovely place to while away a morning.
