Winkel van Sinkel in Wijk 06 Binnenstad

We had arranged to meet here with a group on a Saturday for coffee and a treat. Reservations are only possible inside, but they still had space in the back garden. It was in the sun and very hot, but they immediately went the extra mile. They moved tables around, etc. We thoroughly enjoyed the coffee and treats in the garden; the service was friendly, everything was perfect.

After not having been here for 8 years, I found myself in a situation where I had to dine here with people again. I kept a low profile so as not to set the tone, but it was an unchanging disaster. Service was okay, except that we were served the wrong starter. According to the waitress, we misheard, but the correct one was on the bill... The onion soup was of mediocre quality. My dining companion's starter wasn't warm; heating it up took a long time again. The vegetarian main course was too sad for words. Throw a can of white beans in tomato sauce with some pieces of carrot and tomato, add some random herbs, and the masterpiece is ready. No idea if anyone in the kitchen has ever actually tasted it themselves. Well, and then down to the toilets. Are they ever thoroughly cleaned? I tried not to touch anything. No, for the time being, I'm giving this beautiful city jewel a wide berth again. 8 years ago I wrote: Beautiful place, the (real) old Winkel van Sinkel. But with service so bad that word gets around. And then the acoustics....bad.

We came here for quick drinks. It was a pretty normal order including different beers, and they took over 25 minutes to serve us though the space was relatively empty. Quite a disappointment. And when they served us, part of the group didn’t get their drinks because they didn’t have it though it was on the menu. If they would have let us know earlier, we’d avoided the place. It’s a bummer considering the atmosphere is quite nice.

Slow and terribly uninterested staff, but nice interior.

Serving all four courses took a very long time. From 7 PM to 10 PM. There was too much time between courses. This really needs to run more smoothly. I have experienced this before. That is not very pleasant. Furthermore, the dessert: the limoncello tart was really not good. The pastry was tough. It was not fresh. I am used to much better. I have dined at your restaurant several times.

The interior space is nice. The back garden is pleasantly quiet and cool. I had a crispy chicken baguette with sweet and sour cabbage and spicy mayonnaise. The chicken didn't taste like chicken, but tasted like a tasteless, cheap snack. There were limp arugula leaves on it instead of sweet and sour cabbage. When I pointed this out, it was changed: after that, there were a few (really very few) pieces of white cabbage raw vegetables on it, but the sweet and sourness was nowhere to be found. It could have been a nice, crunchy addition of cabbage. This, too, was a meaningless finishing touch. The sandwich was okay. When you know you are paying E13.95 for this baguette, there is unfortunately only one word: rip-off. So, no quality.

The food is nothing special. The service is terrible. They take forever to take your order, to serve you. An hour and a half for a sandwich and a beer.

We ordered a cocktail - French 75. It wasn't as expected - in a large wine glass, with ice cubes and a slice of lemon. Normally you get it in a champagne flute, without ice, with a lemon curl. It really didn't taste good either, too bitter. Not recommended, certainly not for €13. It resembles a bad gin & tonic. The terrace is pretty OK, but otherwise nothing special.

The restaurant looks great, but the food leaves much to be desired. The baguette with mushrooms was presented without care, tasted awful, and I've certainly experienced more attentive service.

Beautiful space. Expensive, just ok food. Staff is just a bit rude and always seems overwhelmed regardless of how busy it is. In other words: typisch Nederlands!

Ordered a steak sandwich, it wasn't tasty, way too little sauce, waited a long time and the bun was overcooked, the fries were way too salty and hardly any mayonnaise, all in all a waste of my money.

The location and building are fantastic. But… the beer took half an hour to arrive after ordering and finally came after we had asked for it again. The “boeuf bourguignon” was a watery soup with a few slivers of meat (and salt), my dining companion’s grilled chicken was tasty but otherwise unimaginative (chicken on a mat of haricots verts). The young staff do their best but are incompetent and apparently are not taught to ask if the food was enjoyed. Unfortunately, the beautiful building turned out to be a flag on a mud barge.

We found the restaurant remarkably empty for a Friday evening.

Had a very bad experience at Winkel van Sinkel. Had to wait at least half an hour for each round of drinks. Had to wait an hour for our food (only a main course, steak tartare which tasted like it came straight from the freezer). The French fries we ordered with it weren't French fries? The fries were also cold. After sending them back, we didn't get much warmer fries in return. The fries also tasted like the same fries, but reheated. The service was very clumsy and the staff didn't know the dishes. After asking how much longer it would take for the food, the young man said "I'm in charge of the drinks". Couldn't you pass our question on to your colleagues then?! Even after pointing out that our fries were cold, we were asked what our table number was?! As compensation for the wait for our food, we received a small plate with iceberg lettuce and sun-dried tomatoes.

We were at a "we love 80s, 90s, 00s, and 10s" party. The entrance fee was 20 euros. I had expected a bit more. Very little nice decoration. No nice TV screen included. It was just one room with a bad DJ who literally jumped from one thing to another with his music. The soft drinks (€4) were very lukewarm, but the beer was good. You also have to pay an extra 5 euros for coats and the toilet. (I heard it's the only one in all of Utrecht.) I find that very strange; you're already paying 20 euros too much for the party. Next time we'll go somewhere else. They didn't have air conditioning either (with 30 degrees outside). It was very poorly organized. In short, cheap junk for a premium price!

Had dinner here at the wharf this afternoon. I was served by Peer, who came over for a nice chat. The tapas were tasty too!

Food and drinks were fine, but the service was substandard. The guy serving us was inexperienced and too distracted by a group of “students” sitting next to us. So, a shame, a missed opportunity. P.S. The bill wasn't right either.

This must have been the worst food I have ever had in a restaurant. For such a Nice location and nice looking restaurant you would expect more. First of all, we waited over 30 minutes to get a salad and a sandwich with which had a long curly hair in it. . When finally served the carpaccio sandwich, it had a long curly hair in it so we had to wait again for a new plate. My salad was the worst looking . salad I’ve ever seen in my life. You should be ashamed. No dressing , a square dry piece of goat cheee and some soggy lettuce. This restaurant should be embarrassed with their cook. I only ate the few pieces of dry chicken. Pears you ask me? Two Tiny slivers. Total bill including. 2 cokes and 2 cocktails . 70 euro! I couldn’t finish this nasty salad. What a total waste of my money please do not come here unless they change cooks and pay attention to the quality of the food.

Incredibly atmospheric location, which has been fantastically restored to its former glory without being old-fashioned. We had brought a friend from a faraway country who wanted to see the upper floor and take photos for those back home, because she found it so particularly beautiful. Thomas, who served us at the table, arranged permission and then showed us almost the entire building—what service! And what an impressive location. The food was also very tasty, by the way, with a special compliment for the excellent Uiltjes beer! Thanks for the hospitality and the good beer suggestions.

It was very busy for a Thursday afternoon and I noticed that a lot of things were going wrong. Fortunately, after 20 minutes, Willem(?) noticed that we had been waiting for a long time and he helped us immediately, as he should. Glad it's been resolved!

Nice place. Pushy service; it annoys me when I don't have a moment to myself to look at the menu, but someone stands there waiting with their equipment at the ready until I've chosen my beer.

Beautiful location. We were there with 2 grandchildren, aged 7 and 11. We loved it. But... ordered lunch and after 45 minutes still nothing. We just asked and well... menu change, busy, blah blah. In the end, we paid for the drinks and left without lunch. A disappointment.

Funny, we found the restaurant right on the canal. We sat there by the water. We had a snack and an aperitif. It was quite alright and the price was acceptable for the location. It wasn't until we went to the restroom that we realized the true size of the restaurant. Huge!!!! And very cool.

It took quite a long time before someone came to take our drink order, and even then, it took well over 20 minutes for the drinks to arrive. And in total, it took at least 45 minutes before lunch was served. Soggy sandwiches that were already cold (but should have been warm). I don't easily post a negative review, and I certainly understand that sometimes there is a longer wait due to busyness at peak times, but this was absolutely substandard.

Didn't seem busy, but service took a long time (half an hour). When we inquired, we received the charcuterie board first and the drinks much later. The coffee was lukewarm. Several people complained about the delay in their orders. The cheese cubes were clearly from a supermarket bag. Not recommended.

Stopped here for a beer & bitterballen whilst walking around Utrecht. Attractive location, nice atmosphere inside and plenty of choice of drinks and food. BUT the service was so slow, had to ask twice to place an order and then wait what seemed an age for 2 beers, 1 wine and a portion of bitterballen. Disappointing, especially as there seemed to be enough staff working!

The outdoor area offers views of the canal and the bustling activity in the streets. There's also plenty to discover inside. An exceptional atmosphere.

Very nice location. But for some reason they thought that it was a good idea to serve a desert that was at least 2 days old and dried out. I should have sent it back.

Beautiful ambiance, but lack of cleanliness and chaotic service Winkel van Sinkel is actually a really nice café with a lot of potential, but my last visit was unfortunately disappointing. Here are the issues we noticed: Cleanliness: This is unfortunately the most critical point. The tables were dirty, and the menus were sticky – it seems the cleaning cloth is rarely used. I'd rather not even go into detail about the state of the restrooms; hygiene definitely looks different. Service: The staff seemed very inattentive and unenthusiastic. We were brought the wrong muffin, and the waitress didn't even know what she was bringing (and couldn't explain). Food & Drinks: The latte was okay, but nothing special. The vegan cheesecake was unfortunately a disappointment and tasteless. Conclusion: Beautiful location, but that doesn't amount to much when cleanliness and service are so badly neglected. There is an urgent need for improvement!

Staff varied, very nice people but there was also someone who was quite indifferent. Found it peculiar. Did have a nice time though, and a good beer menu!

Had to wait a long time, food not tasty, hard and tasteless. We are not going back here.

Nice place, but it is a real shame that the service is extremely poor. It took a long time for staff to come to the table. Drinks took a long time. Zero work structure. The food took even longer. We had ordered soups in advance. We received lukewarm soup. Later, a table companion joined us who had also ordered tomato soup. When the sandwiches were brought to the table by a very rude lady, the soup bowls were still on the table and the plates were thrust into our hands. The last table companion mentioned that he had also ordered a tomato soup. Whereupon the lady cut him off and said that the tomato soup was sold out. Zero communication about this. We had ordered hot sandwiches, but they arrived cold. When we mentioned this, the waitress didn't know what to do. We sent the sandwiches back. After which the other sandwiches were brought to the table, and we asked if the sandwiches were hot, but received no response and the plates were thrust into our hands again. The lady who took the sandwiches back did not return to our table to say how this would be resolved (I believe she hadn't found a solution). Extremely unfriendly and inexperienced staff.

This isn't like it used to be, which is a shame. Cuts have clearly been made on staff and service.

Gluten-free dishes including non-gluten-free bread? Very disappointing.

I have celiac disease so I was excited when I saw the menu with marked gluten free items. However, the staff was really unknowledgeable and gave me the gluten free tomato soup (which is marked as completelly gluten free on the menu) with normal bread. Not only that but they insisted the bread they gave me was gluten free (which I knew was not true because my dad had gotten a normal dish which was not gluten free which had the exact same bread). Thankfully one of the waiters recognized the bread was not gluten free (which the rest of the waiters were still insisting didn't have gluten) and asked the kitchen to make the actual gluten free bread. Safe to say I would not trust this place for any dietary restrictions as they are ,for the most part of the waiters, not taken seriously even when the restaurant was not busy at all. I would highly recommend additional staff training on allergies if the restaurant wants to keep the allergen indications in the menu true to reality or just remove them entirely.

I have booked the table seeing the menu attached to the map. Went for burger but it turned out that they dont serve burger at all ! I think those old uploaded pictures needs to be checked eventually.

After waiting 40 minutes, we finally received our food. Our chicken ragout croquettes had probably been ready for the entire 40 minutes; they were cold. The salad was not ‘fresh’, but was certainly two days old. The beef carpaccio sandwich was not carpaccio, but smoked meat. This sandwich also came with no sauce whatsoever, making it dry. The two lettuce leaves didn't improve the sandwich either. Our service, however, was fine. When we wanted to go to the toilet at the end of our lunch, this was not a pleasant experience either. One toilet smelled so strongly of poop that it made me gag. In another, the floor was so sticky with pee. Because of this, it felt like the toilet hadn't been cleaned in a long time. Not recommended.

The place is very nicely decorated. The prices are a bit high because it's a touristy place, and the service doesn't quite match the prices.

One star is actually too much for the experience we had at De Winkel van Sinkel. We sat down on the terrace around 10 o'clock. We originally wanted to order a sandwich, but they didn't have any, so we went for a pastry instead. My partner had an apfelstrudel and I had a stewed pear tart. The drinks and my stewed pear tart arrived quite quickly. The waitstaff said that the apfelstrudel was being made in the kitchen, so it would arrive a little later. Fine. After half an hour, the waitstaff returned with the news that the kitchen was still closed, so the apfelstrudel was off. It is bizarre that waitstaff wouldn't know this and would only come to tell their guests after half an hour. In the meantime, my pastry was warming up nicely in the sun. So we opted for the apple crumble tart instead. We had to wait at least fifteen minutes for that as well! So, after we had already been waiting for at least 45 minutes, the tart finally arrived. Without any apologies. And it wasn't even apple crumble, but regular apple pie… When paying the bill, they didn't ask if everything had been to our liking, and the apfelstrudel was even on the bill as well. I have rarely had such a bad experience in a restaurant. I really hope this place reads the reviews and does something about it.

Beautiful pub for a drink with friends; not suitable if you want to have a drink alone, as the space is too small. But definitely recommended for company; a bit on the pricey side, but well worth a visit.

The location is actually quite nice, but the service, quality, and price don't match up. Apparently, both coffee machines were broken, so we didn't get a latte or a cappuccino, and then we were told they were out of cake. The tables were also dirty. Never again.

Well, nice location, but quite expensive. Aperol at 12 euros is pretty pricey and nothing special, lots of ice too. The staff are just winging it as well.

What a super nice location and atmosphere! The food was delicious, and we were served fantastically by Jasper. Quick, humorous, and understood exactly what I meant and got exactly what I wanted. It was very pleasant; we were short on time, so it's wonderful that everything went so well!! Jasper, you're the best!

For us the service was fine for a central location in a tourist town. Enjoy the building inside or outside, both have their own charm. Cellar toilets are not up to standard and awkward to get to if you are not steady on your feet!

Every couple of years I stop by to enjoy the great location and beautiful, historical decor. And every time I do, I’m reminded why DON’T visit this place. Servers are very friendly, but the service itself is just awful. 25 minutes to get an espresso, a cava and a beer. 25 minutes. The espresso was cold by the time it arrived because the staff at the bar would just make a dozen orders and line them up, waiting to get picked up. No structure. The table next to us, also cold coffee. We could see others sending their’s back. There is no system for servers to follow and they are clearly not well trained. The result is that the service awful. It’s not the staff. They’re trying their best. It’s a lack of leadership and direction. We ordered steak frites. We left after 45 minutes - no food. It arrived as we were putting on our coats. Such a shame. Wonderful, beautiful place. Ruined experience because they can’t get their act together, and haven’t for 20 years. Seems management is content to just have lousy service. Train your staff and do better. Your landmark venue deserves it.

Had lunch here on Saturday. One waitress was extremely unfriendly. She had a grumpy face, clearly didn't enjoy her work, and was also very arrogant. A carpaccio sandwich for 15.95 is grossly overpaid. Just an ordinary small baguette from the supermarket with some carpaccio on it, that was it. Easy money. I am really used to something different in other restaurants. My table companions were also not satisfied with their lunch. Little value for a lot of money, and the quality leaves much to be desired. All in all, a nice place in terms of atmosphere, but that is about it.

Nice place and the food is of good quality, but the Coq au Vin is really extremely small. It is served as a main course but is less than what a starter should be. Left hungry.

Terrible! Don't go here. Poor service where the staff don't know which table to bring the order(s) to. The croquettes were served with completely melted, liquid butter; it ran out of the packet like oil and was no longer spreadable. The coffee was cold and served in a glass because the waiter said they were out of cups. We asked for a half portion of croquettes (1 instead of 2) and that was possible. However, when paying, it turned out we simply had to pay for a full portion (2 croquettes)! There was nothing we could do about it either, because that's how it was set in the computer. Apparently, thinking for yourself and adjusting things is no longer possible. Ridiculous! Having to pay for a whole portion when you received a half portion. What a disappointment this restaurant is. The only nice thing is the location.

Seriously, €15 for this “beef sandwich”? I feel really ripped off. The bun was dry, the meat tough and completely tasteless, and the few pieces of bell pepper and onion really couldn't save it. It was like someone hastily threw some leftovers onto a half-empty bun and thought: “that’ll be fine.” And then the quantity… surely this isn't a portion? For this price, you expect something decent, not a pathetic sandwich that you finish in three bites and are still hungry afterwards. Truly inedible and absolutely not worth the money. This was the first and also the last time I will order here.

Well, the price-quality ratio was poor; we had reserved for 15 people. We received a group menu with very little choice, which was not mentioned during the reservation. But the price-quality of the food was below par. It wasn't disgusting, but it wasn't something we would come back to either. And the biggest letdown was that the toilets were too filthy to use. It was not worth repeating; we would meet up at this place again, coming all the way from the Achterhoek. Fortunately, our own group made it cozy and fun. We saw and spoke to each other again from all over the country. But maybe a tip!!!!!! Get to work on it. The atmosphere of the building lends itself to a lovely restaurant. One where you can walk out and say, "What a delicious meal I had." This is a real shame! I think that for the money, something quite different could be put on the table.

After a long day, we sat down here. After 15 minutes and waving to the staff 5 times, people were still walking past us every time (we were sitting opposite the bar...). We decided to leave again and sit somewhere else. Terrible service.

It all took a while. My table companions were vegetarian and found it mediocre. I won't be back. Next time in Utrecht, I'll try a more intimate restaurant. This one was also very large and empty.

It was a really great first experience! We had a delicious meal and, of course, had some drinks outside on the terrace. The service was also excellent! We had a great host who appreciated our humor, which made it even more enjoyable! I'll definitely be back!

Beautiful location, too bad it wasn't topped off with a bad experience, especially in the kitchen. I ordered cheese nachos, and they barely had any cheese, just a little on top. The appetizer platter was missing half of what was on the menu. I complained, and they gave me a grumpy look. When the platter came back, some of it had been knocked over. It tasted awful, dry. I reported it, but nothing was done about it. The restrooms were absolutely disgusting. It's a shame for such a beautiful location.

If you're a beer lover, you'll be in good hands here with a wide and fine selection. But that's where the positives end. The service was completely disinterested and absent. Our snack platter was a disgrace. Factory-made cheese, factory-made sausage, indifferently presented with a handful of dried lettuce and the cheapest onions, gherkins, and mustard available. Moreover, it took 40 minutes for the platter to arrive. We encountered absolutely no enthusiasm for the craft here from the white and black brigade. It could easily be so much better.

A somewhat mythical place that's unfortunately a bit too crowded and doesn't quite live up to expectations. The service is good, and the food and drinks are also "just" good, but the place is overpriced and far too crowded and noisy (a bit too popular for what it is 😉), and therefore 4 stars 😏

The Winkel van Sinkel building is a striking sight on the Utrecht canal. German merchant Anton Sinkel commissioned this building in the 19th century. For a long time, it served as a department store where virtually everything was for sale, and quickly became a household name in the surrounding area. Today, it houses a café. The building is constructed in the neoclassical style. This is particularly evident in the imposing pillars and the female statues adorning the facade. The overall appearance has a tremendous appeal to me. Every time I'm in the center of Utrecht, I walk past it—consciously or unconsciously—to admire it anew. The café itself is spacious and has a terrace at the back. However, I'm primarily interested in the building itself; therefore, my review focuses primarily on its architecture and appearance. It is precisely this unique appearance that attracts many visitors. This sometimes makes it crowded, and at peak times, people can even have to wait outside to get in. My tip: enjoy this unique building and combine it with a bite to eat or a drink in the café. This way, you'll experience both the atmosphere of the monument and its vibrant modern use.

On Friday or Saturday nights in Utrecht, you can't expect fast service, but here it's incredibly slow. You, the customer, have to ask for genuine attention.

Wanted a quick bite and popped inside as it was reasonably busy. Food / drinks were OK. Service was mediocre, slow, not attentive, forgot my order (twice), wrong table.....

The service was really slow. The food was moderate. And the atmosphere was dreary, but I was facing an outside wall that seriously needed painting.

We ordered nachos and bread with aioli and tapenade. Despite being a lot of "machos," there was almost no cheese or sauce on it. We received a lot of bread, but only a small bowl containing half aioli and half tapenade. Even when the waitress brought our food, she first put it on another table where people had just sat down a minute earlier. When we pointed this out, the waitress was incredibly rude. She told us we'd moved and angrily asked which table we were on. When we tried to help her by moving some things, she angrily grabbed them out of my mother's hands. This was our first time here, but it will also be our last.

I agree, but I'm not going back. We were here because we needed to get information for a city game, but we were so disappointed. We ordered snacks and a cheese board. There were two sets of five small cubes of cheese on it. The server didn't understand us or didn't understand us well. We were really disappointed.

De Winkel van Sinkel is truly a place to be; you simply have to go there. Great atmosphere, friendly service, and if you're lucky enough to be served by Nina, you're in for a treat. She's a fun, spontaneous woman with a beautiful smile.

We had a wonderful drink here, overlooking the Dom Tower. We had a very pleasant conversation with our host, Jasper, who told us a bit about the building's history. We'll definitely be back!

We came here with five friends. My friend's English menu was excellent. Mees then recommended the prime rib and a Weihstephane beer, and it was delicious. We'll definitely be back!

Went there recently for a delicious meal, the waiter was called Tijn and he was very happy and enthusiastic about his work, very tasty and affordable

The toilets were incredibly filthy, with no toilet paper anywhere, and urine running down the seats. The service and atmosphere were fine, but after a glass of sparkling water, we decided to eat somewhere else.

A long wait for a drink and the pastry fork that fell on the floor was wiped off by hand and immediately put back next to the apple pie.

The brasserie is magnificent. We had dinner there one evening and lunch one afternoon. In the evening we had impeccable service (good meal) and a person, at the service, attentive and attentive, the only place where a menu in French was offered and she offered it to us, it is not the most important because we managed very well without it during our stay, but you have to appreciate when a restaurant offers menus in several languages. I warmly thank this young person because if we had only had the experience of lunch the next day, we would not have appreciated this place much apart from the exceptional building and the location (oh no! I forgot the waffle with coulis, ice cream and fresh strawberries 👍). The service was deplorable that day. I therefore give 4* for this person who is committed to giving value to her establishment and especially to her work. I hope that her employer will appreciate her qualities. I know that tourism is often about "slaughter", but when an effort is made it must be highlighted.

We had lunch. The coffee and tea arrived quickly, but we had to wait a bit longer for our lunch (15 minutes). The lunch was delicious and beautifully presented.

The chicken sandwich was inedible, served cold, and tasted unfresh. It gave me a stomach ache. Small 200ml glasses for high prices. Friendly service, though.

Meest slechte hamburger in tijden gegeten. Mayo en ketchup waren vervangen door advocado pasta, 1 droge bende die een dag lang voor misselijkheid heeft gezorgd. Deze tent links laten liggen, er zijn in Utrecht genoeg andere tentjes die lekkerder en goedkoper zijn.

It's a lovely place and a beautiful building with a garden. We went again for lunch today with two children. The price for lunch dishes, especially for children, is really too high. The 9.95 wrap is one wrap with a slice of chicken breast, some vegetables, and yogurt. Really overpriced. The pancakes are three plain pancakes, and you get syrup and powdered sugar on the table. No extras to decorate them, which is so much fun for children. I think charging 9.95 for it is disproportionate. The spicy chicken wasn't spicy at all. The beers on the menu are quite expensive, which makes me feel less inclined to return, even though we loved coming here for lunch.
