Akbar Indian Restaurant in De Weteringschans

I visited this restaurant recently and was disappointed with the overall atmosphere. Although they advertise themselves as Halal, the moment you walk in, the smell is overwhelming and feels more like walking into an incense-filled temple than a dining space. It was not a welcoming environment for someone coming to eat. The food may be fine for some, but the ambiance needs serious improvement.

I've been coming to Amsterdam every year for the past 4 years, Akbar is a must-visit for dinner, the owner is always welcoming, the food is excellent, and the place is authentic and comfortable.

We had very good food and a nice talk with the owner. A great experience!

I had a great meal at Akbar tonight. The owner came to our table and was able to walk us through some decisions about our meal. I'm allergic to bell peppers so I often can't get one of my favorite dishes, but because everything is made freshly to order I was able to get my dish without the peppers. It was wonderful. The restaurant was conveniently located and I liked the furniture. I don't live locally, but if I did this would be a regular place for me. There were some visitors who were in tonight who have been coming to the restaurant every time they're in town - for 20 years!

Excellent food, extensive menu. Pleasant traditional decor. Fantastic service! The host/server is super friendly and knowledgeable.

What a wonderful experience! We ate here with our kids and everyone loved the food. The server was extremely kind and provided great customer service. We will certainly be retuning, thank you for a pleasant dinner with warm hospitality!

Stumbled upon this place on accident looking for food while meandering back to the hotel after leaving the Rijks museum. Wanted to stay away from the high traffic/touristy area and took the very empty looking road. Glad we did. The food was amazing, service was great, and the ambiance/atmosphere was wonderful. Very clean place. We had lamb curry (Madras), yellow rice, garlic naan, and chicken biryani (Madras). Every bite was delicious. Would love to try more of the menu. The menu is quite large. Wasn't expecting so many options from what appeared to be a small restaurant. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Really good experience there. Great food and the service was kind and warm. We had to wait more than expected but probably because it was Sunday and they had to prepare everything from zero.

Food is very nice, service is very friendly. But portions are quite small. And the vegetarian menu is €19,95 on the website, but turns out to cost €40 in the restaurant… Edit: two weeks later, prices are still false. I’m sorry but this seems more like serious scam than ‘accidental’ neglect to update a website.

Although we came late, he welcomed us with a smile, the dishes were very good, very professional service, welcoming staff.

Legit Indian restaurant in Amsterdam. I had the Garlic Chicken Masala it was tasty together with the garlic naan. The guy who served us was nice and friendly highly recommend this place!

The food was really delicious!!! It was there quickly too. Small family restaurant but perfect to get away from the hustle and bustle of the Leidse square. Very friendly staff too, 10/10!!!

I visited Amsterdam, at the age of 12 with my parents. This was back in 1991. The taste I still recall from this trip, was the tanduri from Akbar restaurant. I still have the memory of exceptional food. (By the way, is this still the original address of the place? )

Fantastic experience. Ordered mixed biryani, mango lassi and kulfi because I was missing desi food at home. Completely satisfied. The service and the quality of the food was top notch!

Great food! We had an amazing meal here; it's tucked away on a quieter street and got to get a nice change of pace while traveling from the more touristy eateries.

Yesterday we had a delicious meal at Akbar in Amsterdam. A very cozy place with a very friendly and hospitable owner. Didn't hesitate to ask if everything was okay and gave us the most comfortable experience possible. The food was superb; very fresh and delicious Indian flavors. As a starter I had the king prawns (delicious!) and my table companion had chicken wings (also very tasty!). As a main course I had the bitter chicken; highly recommended for everyone. Super tender meat and you get a lot! The main course with lamb was also great. In short, a super good restaurant in the center of Amsterdam, with a good price-quality ratio and a cozy atmosphere. Thank you for the delicious meals, we will definitely come back!

Top locatie om Indisch te eten. Super lekker, vriendelijk en behulpzaam. Helpt bij je keuze in verband met pikantheid. Komen zeker terug als we nog eens uit België komen.

Very rude staff, refused to give us the spiciest curry, even though we all said that we want to eat it and could handle it. Then he said that only British people are allowed to eat the curry .

the best Indian food you could ever afford to have. It may take a few minutes maybe 30 mins max but it is worth it! the food is scrumptious and mouthwatering, one bite of the dish and straight to heaven you go. It may be a little pricey but the food is really delicious.

I ordered Vendalo, but all what I did test was Chilli..., I was warned that they make it UK-style. I'm a pretty well-seasoned chilihead, but I've had trouble finishing vindaloos here. So be careful when you order Vendaloo here. See you next time #12/08 I was again in this nice restaurant and ordered my favourite sweet vindaloo , the sugar level was bit high so you could taste the chilles very well. Delicious halal Indian food in a nice quiet dining area. Tried their lamb masala paired with yellow plain rice and butter naan. It was excellent.

A great experience. Overall I believe that the prices were a bit higher than usual in Amsterdam but I believe this is how it is for Indian food.

Been coming here for years. Lovely food, lovely staff!

Exceptional cuisine served by a knowledgeable family who really care about hospitality on many levels. Using their own recipes and fresh ingredients, they served us a really special meal, from the carefully crafted dips - mango, tamarind and mint - to freshly cooked chicken and vegetables in really interesting sauces. Some of the best value meals that we have had in a long time.

From Cologne one-Michelin-star Restaurant to Netherlands. Was there, with some of our UK Managing team member Shahrukh K. (not the actor 😀). Okay, it 's an authentic Indian meal , explain colleague... But the same precidure at last time, India is big and (same meal) the cooking in some states are different but it is authentic with a Nederlands taste. So it be ... The taste was good, the price was ok for the city. Beverages are good, and the service is good. Add. They are fluent in Hindi, not Tamil told me Shahrukh.

What a find! some of the best Indian food I've found outside of India. We were staying at a hotel, and no way to bring our left overs home .... so we did our best to eat every last bite! We had the butter chicken and lamb dansak which was absolutely amazingly delicious.

I have been going to Akbar for more than 30 years but less so in recent years with Covid and not going out as much as I used to be. This was a birthday dinner for one of my daughters and Akbar was chosen as the Butter Chicken at Akbar is their all time favourite meal so both daughters had that and it was as good as they remembered. I had the Lamb Karahi which was excellent. The boyfriend of the birthday girl decided to have the Lamb Vindaloo undeterred by the FOUR pepper spiciness indication on the menu and the owner did explain it was quite spicy when the order was placed. It was VERY spicy and a portion of Raita was needed to quench the spiciness. Chatting to the owners they pointed out that their Vindaloo has always been quite hot because many of the regulars, mostly Brits, like it that way. So this is the place to go if you like your Vindaloo spicy. They also do a Phal that has a spiciness indication of SIX peppers. Many years ago I did try the Phal there (before it was on the menu) and I can confirm it is very, very, very hot and for those brave enough to try it I would recommend putting a toilet roll in the fridge. We also had a range os starters to share between us and lots of beers. An interesting feature of Akbar is that it is almost impossible to get internet connection on your smartphone. Whether this is good or bad is a moot point. It does mean you chat to each other rather than checking your smartphone. However, my daughter inconveniently had her birthday on the same day that Naples played Ajax in the Champions League so we needed to keep popping out into the street to keep up to date with the score. Akbar is my favourite Indian restaurant in Amsterdam and I will be going back regularly.

Tolle Essen, für jeden was dabei. Hat uns allen sehr gut geschmeckt. Tolle Abwechslung vom ganzen fast Food. Der Kellner war sehr freundlich und sprach auch deutsch.

Authentiek Indiase gerechten met een service waar je "U" tegen mag zeggen. Akbar is inmiddels mijn vast (familie) restaurant geworden. Wat hadden we hun lekker gerechten gemist tijdens de lockdown.

Heerlijk gegeten!!! 3 verschillende hoofdgerechten van butter chicken naar lekker pittig. Alles super smakelijk en heerlijk mals!!! Nette prijzen voor om de hoek van het Leidseplein. Ook zeer vriendelijke bediening. Zeker een aanrader!
