On Friday morning, September 28th, I sat on the terrace of Anne & Max in Haarlem. The staff only came outside *after* the order—for a drink—had been placed via a QR code, and I noticed how dirty and sloppy the terrace was: wet napkins on the tables, trash on the floor, a table with a large hole in the tabletop, tables wet from the rain, tables where guests had long since left but where crockery etc. were still sitting… To me, that laxity is incomprehensible. Such an attitude immediately gives me insight into the management, business operations, and the local manager. Sad.

Walk in late saturday afternoon. Place is almost empty and yet two coffees take more than 10 minutes and arrive lukewarm. Girl at the coffee machine looks totally baffled that I don't like my coffee lukewarm. Coffee blend they use is a very dark roast so you get that gritty, burned undertone. Little coffee cream is not available so for that you also have to go to the counter Chocolate cake was ok. Tables dirty, ours had some basil leafs on it that had been there for some time already Tip: if you draw coffee, serve it right away, don't go doing other things before you ring the service bell. I've had it with this place, 2nd or 3rd time that the experience was pretty average.

We ended up walking out from the cafe. We went in to order and the staff at the counter ignored us and served someone else who came after us.

Unfortunately, I just got spoiled cottage cheese with my scone! Unfortunately, I only found out on the second bite. And then they made me pay for my daughter's drink. And a lame excuse, really very bad and poor service.

Great relaxed atmosphere, good service and tasty food. A good place to wind down or to just sit and study.

We ordered an iced tea, a mint tea, a carrot cake, and a muffin. We were served quickly, that's true. But the iced tea had no flavor, it was very watery... there was no spoon to stir the mint tea. There was no fork with the carrot cake (we did ask for one, which we also received quickly), but I didn't feel like asking for a plate with the muffin again and a spoon for the iced tea. I stirred my mint tea with the straw from the iced tea, which immediately melted from the heat. What bad luck! Then to the toilet, yuck!! What a filthy toilet area, no hand soap, a dirty black rim with a dirty brown drain hole, gross! I mentioned it to an employee, and she said she would pass it on.

Nice restaurant for breakfast/lunch on the Grote Markt. I wasn't familiar with the Anna & Max concept, but I really enjoyed it. It's a shame they don't have Coca-Cola, but there are plenty of other options to choose from. The toilet is in the basement, so only customers who are able to walk well can use it.

This was a wonderful place to meet u with a new friend. The sofas are perfect for a comfortable conversation, and the coffee there is excellent 👌 I recommend Anne&Max to any Café lover.

Very nice place. It’s ideal for taking a break from shopping and then continuing your day, especially because there is usually always a free table available. The service is fast and efficient. The food, such as the croissant and eggs, is quite standard, so you shouldn’t expect anything exceptional in terms of cuisine. However, for a coffee break, I think the quality-price ratio is really good. Overall, it’s a great place for a quick stop in a pleasant atmosphere.

The staff is really kind and I usually have a great experience, but today I ordered the pulled chicken bowl and there was almost no chicken !! No veggies .. just greenery and pearl couscous. Really almost no chicken. I was searching for it…

We ordered lunch for 2 menu. They apparently did not have some of the dishes that is part of the order such as soup and banana bread. Instead of telling us or substituting them with another dish; they simply served the order without them and still charged us the full price.

Friendly cafe with nice coffees, drinks, cakes and other foods for fair prices. Great spot to sit under the umbrellas and watch people on the city's main square.

Ordering through a QR code. Something we don’t like doing. Waitress not very knowledgeable and could not advise us. Decided against ordering food and just had a coffee. Won’t be back.

A very nice café-restaurant. Attentive and helpful staff, and the food was excellent.

Chaotic service. Went to the till to order as none of the staff came to us. Ordered two plain croissants with our coffee charged €9 even though they are €4 each. Croissants arrived ten minutes before our coffee. Coffee was great but croissants not great

Last year (2025) we had also been here for high tea on Mother's Day and enjoyed it, so we went again. But this year (2026) was very disappointing. We had a seating area with low chairs and low coffee tables. Not ideal because of the older lady, but okay, there was no other spot available. So no choice. It was strange, though, that others were able to switch tables and take a high table. Then the platter arrived. It already seemed smaller than last time. But we thought, apparently that's how it's supposed to be. Shrinkflation? 0.0 prosecco really wasn't tasty. Something like lemonade without bubbles... There are really tasty 0.0 bubbles; a missed opportunity. No tea pots, but individual glasses of hot water. The homemade iced tea was tasty, though. But it didn't all fit on those small tables, so glasses of water were placed on the high tea platter. Then others around us also received the high tea and we noticed that we hadn't received any cakes. We asked for this ourselves and eventually got it. It was a messy afternoon; the staff did their best, but it just wasn't quite right. The people behind us weren't satisfied with the high tea either. Things that were supposed to arrive were forgotten there as well. It's a shame, especially since it was super last year. We wouldn't be quick to go back here now.

It was delicious and the staff were incredibly friendly! Unfortunately, they were out of focaccia bread, even though I was there for breakfast first thing in the morning. But the kitchen staff member offered me a great alternative, which was just as tasty!

I had lunch there. I found the food bland, relatively expensive for the quality. The location is top notch! and the staff was nice.

Coffee took a while, was then placed right in front of our baby's high chair, who immediately knocked it halfway over and burned himself (we didn't even have time to move the coffee). It can happen, but not very smart of the staff in a place packed with children. Next, we sat waiting for almost an hour for our lunch platter. When we inquired, it hadn't even been made by then. The scone didn't arrive in the hour we were there either. We left without eating. Things went wrong next to us too, but at least they got free coffee. Update April: Following my review, I was approached to see if I wanted to come for breakfast for free. Very nice, but when it was supposed to come to an appointment, they unfortunately never responded again. So I will not be going to this location again.

After a meeting at the town hall, I went in here for lunch with 3 colleagues. We hadn't made a reservation, but we were welcome and could choose our own table. Many different seating arrangements: low, high, for small and large groups. Very tastefully decorated and a nice ambiance. The service was prompt and friendly. As a starter, a cappuccino, beautifully and neatly presented. For lunch, I chose the focaccio maximiliano. Delicious. The bread was warm, crispy, but not dry. Plenty of toppings. The combination with arugula was tasty. We ate well and enjoyed our time there.

Tasty oat milk latte. Unfortunately, only 1 product on the menu is gluten- and lactose-free, so didn't stay for lunch.

A really nice place to grab a bite to eat. Great atmosphere and reasonable prices. They also have a heated boat where you can sit. Definitely worth a repeat visit.

Enjoyed a breakfast platter with our social deal. Delicious and plentiful. The coffee was a bit weak, which was a bit disappointing. They reserved a nice spot for us with a view of the Grote Markt.

Just left, very dissatisfied, after waiting half an hour and waving at the waitresses. Which is a real shame, because we really enjoy the design (local products and discounts on plant-based milk) and the food. And now we're thinking about not going back for a while.

We've visited several Anne&Max restaurants throughout the country and are usually satisfied, but here, almost everything was disappointing. The space is dark and dingy, with dirt on the floor and tables, loose strands of Christmas decorations on the floor, peeling paint on the walls, and little personal contact. We only saw a staff member when she brought our food and when we paid. The food and drinks were okay, but nothing special, and perhaps even overpriced considering the quality. And certainly, lunch at a chain like Anne&Max is a different experience than having coffee at your local coffee shop, but with this name on the facade, you'd expect more. There are plenty of other restaurants in Haarlem that are more than worth a visit for coffee or lunch, because judging by recent reviews, the quality here has been declining for some time.

Crowded, dirty tables. Weak coffee. Everything is grimy. It started out as a nice little place. Now it has all the hallmarks of a large chain. It's a shame, but luckily there are plenty of restaurants and cafes in the Grote Markt square where the coffee is good.

coffee is one of the main things you sell, in the least you could train your personnel to ask which size coffee ppl want when ordering so your personnel don’t just always assume a small size by default. It is a minor thing, but disappointing to a customer and obviously not profitable for business

We were served fairly quickly, but we had to wait a long time for coffee. The waiters were hovering at the bar. By the time we finally got our coffee, it had already gone cold.

The food here is fine, but nothing special. The food wasn't brought to our table at the same time, and it took a very long time.

It’s a very cosy place. It gets very crowded though but it adds to the nice atmosphere. I tried the Dream Croissant it was super delicious (I wish it was bigger though also for what you pay - 10.5 euros). The holiday drink, apple pie latte, was supper tasty! The staff is very nice and friendly 🌻

We only had a cup of hot chocolate, but we both had stomach problems. Otherwise, the atmosphere was nice.

Delicious (large!) cappuccino (with a heart :)) But the apple pie felt like it was ready-made from the freezer. Not to mention the bit of air/fake whipped cream. Just a moment. A very nice waitress who really tries her best to speak proper Dutch, compliments. Next time, we'll try another place. A year later...tried it again, but still ice-cold, ready-made (?) apple pie, watery apple and flavorless, with yet another tiny bit of air/weak blob of whipped cream (for 0.75 cents!!). This was really the last time...

A lovely high tea in honor of my niece. Anne&Max is beautifully located on the Grote Markt in Haarlem.

I arrived at 7:55 and was greeted warmly. After that, I didn't see anyone else. I saw that it didn't open until 8:00, so I waited patiently and placed my order using the QR code. At 8:10, someone came over to tell me that the barista was running late and therefore couldn't make my coffee. It's worth mentioning that I'd just ordered a simple filter coffee. The sandwich I ordered hadn't even been started yet. I decided to seek my salvation (coffee) elsewhere. Don't you teach all your employees how to work the coffee machine in a coffee shop?

Price/performance is a disgrace. Ordered via mobile phone, drinks arrived after about 15 minutes - the food after 70 minutes!! Breakfast for two people plus piri-piri focaccia. Breakfast was okay (for €38, but completely overpriced), the €13 focaccia was truly disgraceful because it was dry and old. Standard answer to all questions: it's busy right now, I'll take a look. Sorry: when it comes to price vs. service/food, I can only advise against it!

First time at Anne & Max's, what a cozy atmosphere! Perfect spot for a cup of coffee, tea, and of course, a delicious piece of cake 😋

We had the lunch for two. It looked great in the photos. But our platter was very sparse; it seemed like they'd forgotten something... just 3 very thin slices of bread for the two of us, 2 soups, some dips, a very small bowl of egg with salmon and salad, and a burrata with salad. No savory toppings as listed on the menu, and far too little bread. Very disappointing for the price.

Fresh, warm croissants, vegan options available aswell as delicious fresh orange juice, and excellent coffee. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, and the staff are incredibly friendly and attentive. You can really feel how much effort they put in. A very enjoyable place to relax and feel a little at home. Everything for its price tho.

The apple pie came out of the freezer, was still slightly frozen in the middle, and tasted watery. A real shame. The iced tea was okay, and the service was very friendly.

We visited the Ten Boomhuis museum nearby and went for lunch. Ordered gluten free. The service, the food, the friendliest waitresses....... This place stole our hearts. As a visitor from South Africa, I will highly recommend ANNA&MAX.

Had a great lunch at Anne&Max today. Got great service and alternatives when a gluten free sandwich was not available. Food was amazing. Would definitely recommend.

02/02/25 New local Grote Markt 5 : I am disappointed with the quality of service, for the first cappuccino I waited 20 minutes, for the second cappuccino I waited another 18 minutes, this is strange. The coffee is quite tasty, although very weak, the foam in the cappuccino is also not very interesting. But the atmosphere is great, the place is very nicely and pleasantly decorated, the outside terrace provides wonderful views of the Haarlem market, where in the morning the rising sun warms you nicely. 2019 old local-Wspaniale urządzone wnętrze, klimat wydaje się być całkiem przykemny. Kelnerki niezbyt miłe, i cappuccino na wynos wykonane bardzo niestarannie .

The super club cannot be beaten

Good drinks and delicious cakes. Drinks are a bit pricey, though, and the patio is a bit cramped.

If your coffee order never arrives and no staff member checks it while you're sitting down, don't go if you don't want your trip ruined.

Anne&Max is known for their cozy living room coffee place, but this particular location gets pretty crowded, especially in the weekend. Don't get me wrong, I love the cozy home-like atmosphere, but the tables can be placed a little farther apart to give everyone some personal space. Every dish of them I tried was pretty tasty. Their 'bacon' made of coconut stays my favorite though! The coffee tastes of good quality, and it's actually the first restaurant I went were I didn't pay extra for oat milk, Thank you :) !!

Sat here on the terrace with my granddaughter and had a nice drink and a bite to eat together.

Ordered a dream croissant: the croissant was good, the rest was terrible. A handful of dry arugula (!) in between, a tasteless piece of scrambled egg (not even salt or pepper in/on it), a few pieces of canned salmon, also tasteless. Three times nothing, for €10.50. What an insult.

Delicious coffee. Good atmosphere. Beautiful place. Service was unusually slow. Taking a little rest is okay. But not seeing for fifteen minutes makes you restless.

Best sandwich I have ever had!!! I don’t write reviews often but I could not leave without shouting my praise for the sandwich I had at this restaurant. My wife and I stopped by chance she got a salad and was very happy but enough about the salad this is about the sandwich. It had the perfect balance of fresh bread and crust crunch, perfect amount of filling and did not fall apart on the first bite. The staff were nice but it’s not about them it’s about the best sandwich I have ever had. I am 56 years old and have had my fill of sandwiches but this was truly the best ever.

Second breakfast in Harleem. Omg. Croissants are yums! So well baked 🤩 Ambience and vibe are 10/10. I’m loving it, very small and chilly town with friendly people around!

What we ordered was delicious. The service was not great when we arrived. First, someone showed up while we hadn't even looked at the menu (after a minute), then no one came by. After fifteen minutes, we waved. Other people sat there even longer and then left. The terrace lacked atmosphere; it could be more inviting.

We went for high tea, and it was excellent. It seemed small, but it was more than enough. The food was good, and the service was also good. There was just one minor drawback this afternoon: there was no white wine, which had been completely consumed the night before. So I thought, why not just get some white wine from the liquor store or grocery store? That was a slight drawback, but otherwise it was excellent, including the service from the hostesses.

Your espresso tonic is honestly criminal 🤢, it’s also really unfortunate I cannot order with a person but have to use the QR codes which was not very clear. We waited for several minutes and were completely ignored by staff, they also made it difficult to pay because no one is looking at your table. Honestly with city that has so many great coffee places this is not it.

Well, this one was a bit of a disappointment. It took ages for anyone to say "hello" when we got inside. Then we got our high tea, which came with a leaky thermos and a large wooden platter with everything on it. We got a new one. And everything was okay, really. But it seemed like it had been prepared earlier, and the food wasn't anything special. No chocolates or anything else. They did have fresh iced tea, which was delicious. The white tea was also good. No one came to ask if everything was to our liking. And all around us, tables were regularly left uncleared.

Ordered a lunch platter. Soup, salad, scrambled eggs, bread, spreads, cheese, and cold cuts. I found the bread a bit lacking. And no real high-end dishes. No butter, and if you ask for it, you get a €1 charge. A small bottle of sparkling water is listed on the menu and in the app for €2.75, and the bill is €3.25. Too bad, perhaps my expectations were too high.

We had booked high tea with friends. After booking, the dietitian put me on a diet that included no added sugars and no eggs. When the server asked if any dietary requirements needed to be taken into account, I didn't mention them until the moment they arrived. (I'd forgotten to mention them beforehand.) They even made me a delicious salad and rolls at the last minute. Thank you so much! Excellent service and incredibly delicious food. 😊

We had breakfast with four people on Saturday morning through a social deal. Reservations are recommended on Saturdays. The breakfast was very extensive, with many delicious breakfast options, tasty juices, and coffee. The service was super friendly and patient, even though it was incredibly busy. Highly recommended!

Good coffee but mediocre service.

Ordering online is very inconvenient, everything was put down 1 by 1 so that there was only 1 person eating at a time. The division of tasks was bad and you could see one of the waitresses working her way through the counter. The food itself was fine but that's about it. We won't be coming back here.

Saturday in Haarlem, invited to sit down on your terrace, first of all nice to know that I am welcome as a smoker with you. In the Netherlands, you have to think about what you order in the catering industry that nothing can be messed up. The 17(?) year old waitress at €11 per hour clearly could not handle the number of customers. After 20 minutes we asked and finally got our lukewarm coffee, tea, and cappuccino. What a miserable shop. It will not surprise you that the service is not even worth one star.

Bad experience, won't be back Staff doesn't pay attention at all. We had to wait 45 minutes (!) for a sandwich, while it wasn't even busy. On the terrace, everything went wrong and the salad was bone dry, they simply forgot the dressing. When paying, we also got the wrong receipt and therefore paid too much. When we pointed this out, the lady behind the counter literally said: "Then you shouldn't have paid if it wasn't correct." As if we could have known that - we hadn't even seen the receipt before paying. No apologies, just a blunt and smart attitude. Very unprofessional and unfriendly to customers. We will definitely not be coming back here

Staff are so friendly, but the menu is a little bit pricey

Bad, ordered 2 coffees, few customers, after waiting for more than 25 minutes still nothing served. Waitress looked at us with sheep eyes when we said something about this, but left the place without the coffee.

Not for the first time we have been completely ignored by the staff. At the old location this was a great place but unfortunately it has been going downhill for some time. Also last Saturday after waiting for about 15-20 minutes we left the terrace and that while there was nobody there. It was also quiet inside (only 2 customers). And the staff? They were chatting happily behind the bar. Such a shame.

After a very long wait, the wrong order was delivered and lukewarm cappuccino was returned twice. What a disgrace.
