The food is ok and the view is great. The service is a huge problem. We were here with a larger group and whenever a new person joined us a waiter would immediately rush to them and ask them what they want to drink, without letting them see the menu first. When answered with: well I need some time to see first, the waiter would walk away passive-aggressively and maybe come back after 30 min. Also my friend asked if she could have a new ginger tea, but because there was still plenty of ginger in the cup she asked if they could simply refill it with water (she obv wanted to pay for a new tea just didn’t want to waste the ginger). The waiter responded very rudely telling her she has to pay for it and started a little argument with her.

I just ordered two Bacardi Cokes. When the drinks arrived, it turned out there was hardly any Bacardi in them, at most 1 milliliter per drink. That is really ridiculous and totally not what you should expect.

A nice place for a light meal and drinks on a Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately, the service is slow and the kitchen seems to be asleep. We had to wait a whole hour for our nachos.

Service was quite fast most of the time despite the crowds. Great. Good atmosphere management using heat lamps, parasols, and candles. My fries were taken away right in front of me; after a pleasant conversation, I received a new one free of charge—now that’s good service. The food was good. Recommended if you want to enjoy a few hours on the terrace. Regards.

Really great! I do find it strange that they serve alcohol to children. I had a special tree with 10 drinks, for 80 euros!!

The food is terrible. The staff doesn't know who's coming or when. So the food arrives eventually. The ambiance is very nice. Everything else is just awful.

Service takes a long time, even though the terrace isn't full. The staff is very friendly though. 10.25 for a Skuumkoppe. No head, lukewarm, no fizz. Portion of bitterballen for 9.50 which were frozen inside. Kitchen much faster than the bar.

Good food ruined by bad service

Top location in Leiden. A nice terrace in the summer and those lovely, cozy domes in the winter.

If you come in the winter, go to the outdoor dome, and ask for some Glühwein. Glühwein (roughly translated as 'glowing-wine', from the temperature the wine is heated to) is an alcoholic drink usually prepared from red wine, heated and spiced with cinnamon sticks, cloves, star aniseed, orange, sugar and at times vanilla pods, served hot or warm. It is a traditional drink during winter, especially around Christmas.

We had a very disappointing experience at this restaurant. First of all, we waited an unreasonably long time just to place our order. The staff was inattentive, and we literally had to chase down waiters to get any service. This is completely unacceptable. After finally ordering, we had to wait another 30 minutes for our food. Unfortunately, the food itself was extremely poor — honestly, some of the worst we’ve ever had. We barely ate it. To make things worse, after finishing, we waited yet another 30 minutes just to pay the bill. Again, no one was paying attention, and we had to actively try to get someone to help us. It’s shocking how such a beautiful place can be ruined by such terrible service and food. This experience completely spoiled our visit.

The price-quality ratio is not really in proportion, so 3 stars.

Great coffee and very kind service. Applaud the staff for working at the terrace during such busy hours. Despite the business they were so kind and accommodating. My only complaint was that the tables outside are a bit too close together and our experience was impacted by our loud British neighbours, L.OL.

Went there today, thought the terrace was nice. Everyone busy cleaning the menu cards? Took a long time for someone to come. Ordered Irish coffee with whipped cream separately - why? Then the coffee wouldn't cool down quickly. Glass full of weak coffee, whiskey was tasteless, long wait. Asked for the bill, nobody came back. Eventually just went to the entrance and asked for the bill. Definitely won't be coming back here again. Expensive and bad, such a shame.

Very beautiful place with delicious food and good service. The setting is remarkable. The atmosphere, the water, the ducks inside. Romance! It is worth visiting the place. We also had wonderful weather, which contributed to the wonderful experience.

For anyone seeking a great terrace for drinks and snacks, this is a must-visit. It’s arguably one of the finest spots in Leiden.

As of April 2026, you apparently pay €5.30 for a flat white here..

Absolutely enjoyed this place. Drinks and Oreo cheesecake were so good! A big thank to Mick for an amazing service that actually made us considering coming back again!

Lovely spot, especially in the sun

Upon entering, a dirty table; the food was good. I have rarely encountered such a filthy toilet; reported it to a staff member, but nothing further was done about it. Unfortunately. Perhaps an isolated incident.

We made a reservation for four people inside the restaurant. We had to find staff to check us in. The lady noticed our reservation was there. She didn't say anything else; we had to ask where we could sit. We were seated at a sticky table with an equally sticky menu and drinks menu. After waiting for about 20 minutes for staff, we moved to the bar area, hoping to be more visible to the staff there. Unfortunately, we weren't seen there either, nor were two other couples with us. By then, more than half an hour had passed. We decided to leave. We had dinner at the Gaanderij, where we were warmly welcomed by the super friendly staff. Within five minutes, we had drinks and sandwiches on the table.

We thought it would be nice to have a drink... then we sat there for 30 minutes and the staff walked by and looked at us but didn't do anything at all. We went to the weigh house and were helped within 2 minutes.

I thought I'd have a nice drink at Annie's, but unfortunately not. The staff look right through you, so after waiting for half an hour, I went to De Waag instead. It was much more pleasant there and I was served within 2 minutes.

A lovely large terrace, and the lunch food was also excellent. The staff were certainly not unfriendly, but unfortunately not attentive either. They didn't come by to order another round of drinks. There were plenty of staff around, but they didn't pay any attention to the guests after their first order. Not a single glance, not even when we wanted to pay.

We ordered coffee and cake, you first get one cake, then the other and half the coffee with caramel, but everything stuck to the cup, plus the cocktail menu was also covered in food remains. 1x never come here again 😭😭

A nice and cozy place, but unfortunately, the rest was quite disappointing. The food (toasted sandwich) was very sparsely topped and very dry. After eating, we had to wait over 25 minutes for someone to come to our table. It wasn't busy at all, but the staff were very friendly. Next time, we'll skip Annie's.

A lovely waterfront restaurant, definitely recommended. We enjoyed delicious pastries and dinner. The food was delicious, and despite the cold, it was lovely to sit under the heaters. Beautiful spot on the water.

I was having a drink with some friends when a fight broke out between the manager and an employee, which we heard loud and clear. You can't talk to your own staff like that! It's antisocial.

We were there for drinks, so I can't comment on the food. The service was quick and efficient. Very friendly. Good selection of drinks.

We dined with a group of 17, two of whom had allergies (lactose and gluten). The order was taken correctly. Drinks arrived first, followed shortly after by the appetizers. We were asked if the main courses could be served immediately. Everything was correct and served simultaneously. The food was excellent. Even the steak was cooked to the desired doneness for each person. A wonderful evening with prompt and efficient service.

Lunch orders can be placed from 5:30 PM. We placed our order at 5:45 PM, but it didn't arrive until 7:00 PM, despite reminders. Therefore, I'm not judging the food itself.

Very disappointing experience. We had a reservation for 5 people. After a long wait, we each received only one drink. No food arrived at all, despite waiting 1.5 hours. The staff completely ignored us, as if we were invisible. When we finally managed to get a waiter’s attention and asked for additional drinks, those never arrived either. At that point, we decided it was time to leave. This was extremely unprofessional service, and we will definitely not be coming back.

Annie's Birthday is now Annie's. Nostalgia for me. Friendly service and beautiful winter domes on the patio.

During the Christmas market you could sit comfortably on the terrace in a heated dome.

Just had lunch at Annie's, and the staff was mostly busy with each other. Drinks took a long time to arrive. We were with our two daughters, one of whom doesn't eat much. Luckily, there was a frikandel with fries on the menu. When we ordered, the lady said it wasn't possible because they only serve them in the evening. Strange, you can order fried snacks for lunch, but not a frikandel... flexibility was lacking! Such a shame!

Still one of the most beautiful spots in Leiden. The staff is quite young and not very experienced, but service-oriented and friendly. The satay sauce is sparingly portioned, and the menu is otherwise ideal for a quick bite in the city. The atmosphere is always cozy and busy, yet you always feel at ease.

Nice service team ! With great winter Christmas outdoor area … the prices are fair compared to what I’m used to in Amsterdam! The cocktail was sooo significantly light, barely had any alcohol .. loved the borrel wooden plate that we shared its super rich ! I highly recommend this place

During this time of year, with lights and illuminations shimmering in every corner of Leiden, you're immediately struck by the beauty of the city. When you encounter Annie's, with its festively lit igloos mirrored in the water, you're not only captivated by the magical moment, but also curious to come in and see the menu, especially if you happen to be there at the right time for dinner. It was worth it. Everything was perfect: the staff was young and attentive, the food excellent, the good selection of beers and wines, and the magical atmosphere.

A lovely place in the Christmas spirit with the two domes that are set up every year. The food was delicious and there was plenty of choice. The service was a bit lacking, though. We had to wait 30 minutes from the moment our bread platter was finished until we could order our main course (and then we had to ask for it ourselves). I witnessed several guests having to ask if they could order or even approach the waiters themselves... which doesn't seem right for the product being offered.

Normally an Irish coffee should have whipped cream on it, but here they just charge for the whipped cream they squirt on it... It's unbelievable

Delicious food and a great atmosphere under the dome. A few minor quirks: one guest's drink was forgotten, we didn't receive cutlery with dessert, and the table was set for four even though we had made a reservation for five (although it was correctly marked on the reservation sign). The staff was otherwise very friendly and the food delicious (especially the Oreo cheesecake!), so we will definitely be back.

A bit shabby, but the location makes up for it. The menu isn't flexible, which I find a shame. I'd prefer a half portion (but not necessarily half price). This wasn't possible.

Just sat for 45 minutes on this beautiful waterfront terrace. Unfortunately (like several other guests around us), we couldn't order anything. The staff was busy with all sorts of things, but not taking the phone. Incidentally, they were on the side of the terrace where a young lady was serving. Unfortunately, we weren't in "her area." Now we're at "Dende" in Leiden. Waterfront terrace, heated cushions, drinks taken within three minutes and served two minutes later. (And a full terrace here too, by the way.) That's how it can be done. 👍🏻

Had lunch with croquettes on bread. Delicious bread and good croquettes. The price is a bit high, but you're in a nice location, overlooking the water. Inside, it looks very nice, a bit of a basement feel with alcoves.

What an absolutely disastrous place. A truly pathetic little place, what a pathetic old man. From the very first moment, everything went wrong: one drink was forgotten, and another glass was forgotten with another. How could they even manage that? Then the nachos were forgotten, and when we asked about them, it still took ages for them to arrive. Finally, they arrived, but what a disgrace. The cheese on the nachos wasn't even melted. Are you okay, mate? All you have to do is turn on an oven. It looked like someone had thrown a supermarket bag of grated cheese on it at the last minute. Then I ordered a vodka Red Bull, which contained enough to make a mug drunk. I told her it was truly bizarre how little was in it. She came back, and it looked like something had been added. What a truly awful place.

Yesterday we were at this restaurant. The staff is very inexperienced; they're students trying to make money. But they know nothing about the hospitality industry. We had to ask several times for glasses and cutlery, otherwise we couldn't eat. The staff was quite rude; hire experienced staff. The food was decent. But when I went inside, I found a shockingly filthy restaurant, and the restrooms, in particular, were a sight to behold. Bizarrely bad for such an atmosphere. It's not that cheap.

A lovely local terrace in the heart of Leiden. It was already a household name during my student days. It was called Annie's Birthday. Fast delivery and relaxed food and drinks. One downside: the cheeky seagulls flying low and bothering customers by taking food in their swoop...

It's nice there. Unfortunately, it doesn't help when you're not served even when there's almost no one there.

We only had cheese sticks, so we didn't actually try the food, but they were delicious, of course. The atmosphere is lovely, right by the water. Service varies greatly from person to person. Initially, we were served by a young, blond guy who wasn't at all interested in helping people. We had to constantly try so hard to make contact, and we really felt like we were bothering him. Just as we were about to leave, two young women took our place, immediately creating a pleasant, friendly, and helpful atmosphere that almost made us stay longer.

Part of the bar is located on a floating barge right on the canal. It has a very pleasant atmosphere, especially in the evenings.

Annie's is without a doubt my favorite spot in Leiden. You can sit here by the canal—it's truly the best spot in Leiden, with DELICIOUS food and great service. Such a great atmosphere! The nachos would be even better with chicken!

Great place. Sat on the terrace, which was wonderful. The only thing that was really annoying was that they took your glass away before you'd even finished it. This is so unwelcoming.

Today, around noon, I sat down on a 25% full terrace. It took quite a while for an order to be taken. The first interaction was a waitress snapping and asking if the people at the table next to me had stayed (great: start with "Good morning"). The rest of the service was friendly. Once I ordered, it took about 10 minutes for my cup of mint tea to arrive. Too long for how quiet it was, but the view is fantastic and I wasn't in a hurry. Great! The fish trio with bread was good. I think the tuna salad was homemade (very good), the mackerel came from a vacuum package, and the salmon was just good salmon. The bread and salad were also fine. In summary: it was good, but there are things that could be improved.

A really nice spot on the water. This time we went for a drink and a simple appetizer 😂 It's wonderful to be right on the water, with all the boats sailing by.

Terribly dirty toilet. I think it hadn't been cleaned all day. Everything clogged and the floor was literally soaking wet. The staff's reaction after addressing this was unacceptable. They were going to fix it now. It was truly disgusting. I wonder how often the kitchen is cleaned. I say Rob Geus. Taste police have their work cut out for them.

Never seen such a filthy toilet. Everything was spilling onto the toilet floor. Literally soaking wet. And it wasn't from today or the hour before. It was at least from the afternoon before. I'm glad I didn't eat there. If the toilet is this dirty and needs maintenance, will it be clean in the kitchen? Taste police have their work cut out for them.

We stopped here for a cup of coffee and possibly lunch. There were a total of 15 people sitting on the terrace with only four staff members. We waited 25 minutes for absolutely nothing, and after 25 minutes of no table service, we left! The service was incredibly poor and they really didn't want to sell anything. It's a shame, as the place is beautiful and we would have loved to spend a lot of money.

We ordered a medium steak and almost got it well done. And the chef didn't give us a new one, which was fine. The beers were good, though.

We had lunch here yesterday and it was delicious! However, we had to wait a long time. It looked quite busy, so I can certainly understand it taking a while to get our drinks, but we had to wait about 20 minutes before anyone even came to ask if we wanted something to drink. Even after we were told that a rather grumpy-looking employee would send a colleague to us, still no one came. Once our drinks and food were ordered, it thankfully took much less time, and it was delicious! We were served by a cheerful young man. Overall, a really nice place to eat, but it was a shame we had to wait so long.

I ordered a glass of cava at 5:20 PM today and a few minutes later, bitterballen (meatballs). They never arrived, despite asking twice. Really disappointing service. I won't be back and definitely won't recommend this place.

The cafe is beautifully located and looks inviting, but after waiting about 30 minutes to place an order, we left. It's a shame, but they don't seem to need it.

It's okay. The food is just OK. I'd go back just for the atmosphere. Nothing more. It was too expensive for what it cost.
