10/10! Perfect spot for a date night or dinner with friends. Food was amazing and a must visit if you only have a few nights in town.

Very welcoming ambiance and super friendly staff. A small menu and no a la carte. The starters all served as a first course were very tasty. The main courses fish and chicken were quite delicious and the desert super tasty. All cooked to perfection. Really enjoyed it and highly recommended.

Lovely little restaurant, the food was delicious and the service top notch. Arrived at 6:00 PM, just as they opened, and were warmly greeted and seated. Every course was well prepared and very flavorful. The 5 starters were standout and we chose the fish and chicken dish for entrees, both great. Would definitely come back here.

Fabulous meal, great service and lovely vibe to the place. Liked the fact that it has a limited menu choice as they clearly concentrated one making the two choices special. We loved the starter platter and had one each of the fish and meat main and were blown away by them. Well done and thank you!

Ci siamo recati in questo locale per suggerimento di un amico. Locale piccolo circa 40 coperti con cucina a vista,1 chef e 2 in sala. Menù fisso con Antipasti misti(5 assaggi) 1 piatto di carne o pesce e dolce. Una cucina gourmet con tante contaminazioni dal mondo, dalle spezie orientali alle salse italiane. Gli antipasti 5 assaggi per 2 persone molto interessanti serviti cin pane e del burro a parte. I piatti principali erano molto buoni cotture e accostamenti perfetti, equilibri e consistenze che strizza l'occhio a uno stellato. Dolce finale molto buono. Zalig eten, vriendelijk en kundig personeel. De formule van een vaststaand menu met meerdere voorgerechtjes, keuze uit 2 hoofdgerechten en een dessert is prima. Ik ben grote eter en had best iets meer brood gewild bij de voorgerechten of ook bij hoofdgerecht. De harder was heel lekker, maar er zat behalve de overheerlijke saus weinig substantieels bij aan groente of puree of rijst oid, voor mij was de portie daardoor iets te klein. Maar vooral genoten hoor!

The starters were mind blowing; the main course (pork one) imo could use some complexity in tastes. However, as an overall experience, with the extra quality of service, incredible atmosphere, and great vibes in general, I’m definitely coming back soon and giving it no less than 5 stars

Having lived in Amsterdam for 4 years (a place not known for service culture) this was some of the worst service I have encountered and definitely the worst food. The staff were rude to one of my companions when she arrived. They remained surly throughout. The food is in the main very, very average. The chef doesn’t seem to understand flavours or indeed how to cook. They also do not use good quality ingredients. The food is in very meagre, tasteless portions. Unfortunately my pork main dish was raw and bloody in the centre. When I complained the ‘cook’ told me that food cooked sous vide is sometimes bloody. This is not correct for pork. It should not be bloody or chewy/slimy - as you can see from the photo it was not cooked. He offered to heat it up further. I was not comfortable eating it at all and stopped after one mouthful as soon as I saw the blood. I asked if I could have the fish main course instead. He declined stating I had already eaten most of the pork. This was a tiny slice of pork and as you can see from the photo one bite is gone. There was gristle and raw meat. Absolutely disgusting. I did not eat any more and felt nauseous. The least they could have done is replace the meal - which they refused to do. €50 for this is diabolical. The point is not necessarily the raw food - everyone makes mistakes. The problem was how they dealt with it. Terrible service - almost accusing us of trying to get something for free. Disgusting. Do NOT eat here if you value your health, you have tastebuds or you like pleasant staff. Horrendous. There are many wonderful options in this city - this one should be avoided. Photos do not lie. No one would put that monstrosity in their mouths. It was barely eaten despite your clear LIE that the pork was mostly eaten (you can see from the photos that is not true). And to the owner’s defensive response - you should feel happy - you robbed us of more than €200. We didn’t decline to pay even though the food was clearly inedible. And if you don’t understand that your solution was not acceptable because I was already nauseated and put off by the meat, then you have a clear lack of empathy for customers. Your arrogance is jarring. No apology nor any attempt to make amends. Shocking. Also why are you writing to me about plastic chairs - I didn’t say they were. Your copy/paste unprofessional response shows your lack of attention to detail, your inability to address the issue at hand (bloody and RAW pork) and pure laziness in blindly defending your mistakes. There is nothing for you to be proud of here. Take the feedback and do better next time.

Wouldnt recommend, me and my group reserved a table for 18:00, I arrived a bit early 9 minutes early, the staff was outside having drinks and food , so I thought they were clients, when I tried to go into the restaurant , was told they were not open yet, , they wouldnt be open till 18:00 EXACTLY, rather than let me sit outside as they had tables out, I had to stand a bit to the side until it was 18:00 , it went down hill from there, the atmosphere wasnt friendly and when my friend tried to eat her meat dish, she CLEARLY had bloody meat , and when we told them , about it and they refused to provide a replacement, they kept asking us if we enjoyed out meal, that to me was just plain evil, the food wasnt great for 45 euros, on a truly small table and plastic chairs , this is NOTHING close to fine dining.

Mi plato principal de cerdo estaba claramente crudo y sangriento, pero cuando le elevé esto cortésmente al chef me dijo que es normal que el cerdo sous vide esté sangriento y rosa. Absolutamente no. Fue horrible como puedes ver. No hubo disculpas solo la oferta de calentarlo. No tenía ganas de comerlo, así que pregunté si podía tener el plato principal de pescado en su lugar. De hecho, rechazaron esta solicitud muy razonable afirmando que ya había comido la mayor parte del plato (NO lo había hecho. Tuve uno bocado antes de notar que estaba crudo). Este tipo de servicio es inaceptable. El chef claramente no entiende la comida (que es peligrosa y preocupante). Hay muchos mejores restaurantes en Amsterdam. I recently dined here with friends, and our experience left room for improvement, particularly in customer service and handling concerns. One of my friends ordered the pork dish, but after just one bite, she felt it was undercooked and raised the issue politely. The chef responded that all he could do was reheat it in the oven, claiming she had already eaten half of it—which wasn’t accurate at all, as she’d barely touched it. Even if the dish was prepared to standard (and I’ll give the benefit of the doubt here), it would have been gracious to offer an alternative or at least waive the charge for a plate that went uneaten. Instead, we were left feeling dismissed, which soured the experience. Additionally, another friend arrived about 10 minutes before the 6 PM opening and found the staff enjoying their own meal on the terrace. When she approached to wait inside or on the terrace (which was otherwise empty), she was met with a curt “Where are you going? We only open at 18 sharp” and wasn’t allowed to sit. She ended up standing next to the empty chairs, which felt unnecessarily unwelcoming. I don’t share this to harm the business—far from it, I know how tough the industry is, but as constructive feedback: A warmer attitude toward guests, especially in resolving issues or accommodating early arrivals, could go a long way in making diners feel valued. With some tweaks, this spot has potential to shine.

Unfortunately, our experience at this restaurant was very disappointing! From the moment we arrived, the service felt cold and unwelcoming. The food didn’t redeem the experience either. Portions were quite small, and the dishes lacked flavor. But the worst part came when my friend received the main course. Just a couple of bites in, she realizes the pork was undercooked! It was pink, slimy, and visibly bloody inside. We brought this to the chef’s attention, who insisted this was “normal” for pork (which is alarming) and offered to throw it back in the oven, refusing to prepare her a new dish. Not once did anyone apologize! Definitely won’t be returning.

We had a wonderful meal on the Elandsgracht. We had a table outside. The service was very cheerful, knowledgeable, and friendly. We were able to sample different wines, and the food was delicious. Nice, varied starters to share, fish for the main course, and a delicious almond cake for dessert.

The place is very overrated .. recommended by a well-known tourist guide .. we took the June Menu .. the appetizers were nothing special .. even the main course was very disappointing .. meager portions .. the only thing we liked was the dessert .. therefore excessive price/quality ratio. I would not recommend it.

The evening started fine with some nice starters, but unfortunately things went downhill from there. Our main course (the roast lamb) took a long time to arrive, and when it finally did, it was lukewarm and very chewy. I couldn’t finish mine. By the time we ate, the other guests who had arrived the same time as we did had already had dessert and left. Dessert didn’t redeem the meal either - the white chocolate ganache was overly sweet and nothing to write home about. This said as a person with a sweet tooth... What really ruined the evening though was the service. The head waiter was rude and very irritated and snapped at us when we were leaving. I wouldn’t normally leave a negative review and I'm not a picky eater but the sub-par food was surprising and the horrible service was upsetting.

One of my fav restaurants in Amsterdam. Such cozy intimate atmosphere inside. The food was delicious, seasonal and with great portions. I’ve been twice now and look forward to returning! Highly recommend !

Its a simply wonderful formula: set starters, choice of meat/fish, choice of desert/cheese. Five small starters with a mix of meat/fish/veg options - simply gorgeous to look at and delightful to taste. The calf tartar and seaweed pancake were a highlight with a delicious flavor and texture. We had both meat and fish options. The fish was delicate with a wonderful creamy sauce on a bed of silky grean bean pure. The duck breast was perfectly pink and tender in a wonderfully rich nduja sauce. The cream cheese base was set with sails of thin cracker and sprinkled with red pepper. The rhubarb desert topped with a merengue are both not favorite items, but this could just be the turning point! The best is the home made chocolate served with coffee. Special thanks to wonderful chef Vane and the lovely ladies helping to make our evening a delightfult and memorable experience. This is why we are regular customers!

What an amazing restaurant! Great service, perfectly reasonable price, for absolutely delicious food. We have been on the search for restaurants in amsterdam with food that packs a punch, the journey has been long&hard but Balthazar’s Keuken has definitely made it on our list. We will 100% be coming back for the monthly changing menu

Delightful restaurant! Came in solo when it opened at 18:00/6 pm on a Wednesday night. Bench seating is great for solo diners. Wine very reasonably priced & the food was delicious. I believe I can say it’s the best fish I’ve had at a restaurant, ever. Highly recommend & wishing the establishment nothing but the best!

Bathazars keuken was weer een feestje. Na lange tijd weer eens aangeschoven met mijn gezin. Altijd weer verrassende gerechten, betrokken personeel en ik vond het leuk dat de kok zijn passie voor koken met ons deelde. Daarnaast spreekt de sfeer van het restaurant mij erg aan.....

The starters were uniquely different and divine! Each burst with a flavorful impact! (menu changes every 3 weeks) I selected the fowl with couscous and lemon sauce - excellent!!

Most disappointing dinner ever. We went for the meat as main dish and it was gross: soft, jelly-like texture, no seasoning and on top of three ravioli; everything was drowning in butter. People from multiple tables sent the same dish back to the kitchen. Finally, here comes the dessert. Caramel shortbread, which to be honest was quite ok, with a sauce that I would describe as a poor salad dressing. Depressing Waiters were trying to make up for a terrible kitchen, but we won’t be back

Food was amazing, also very fair priced. One thing I wanted to mention was that it was a bit loud, so I had to shout out loud to have a conversation. Maybe I was just unlucky and had a very loud table next to me.

1. Very intense canalization smell from the bathroom that interfered with the dining experience. 2. Frustrating service. Originally, a staff member took us through the menu and mentioned that at some point later, she would approach us again to ask about the cheeses. After the dessert, we were noticably hungry and decided to go for the cheese platter. However, no staff member came over to check in with us. Finally the same lady approached us, just to mention that our reservation had ended and we needed to leave as there were new people arriving. We were very surprised. Instead we would have appreciated a timely service and an earlier reminder. When we asked about cheese or coffee, the lady told us there was a cheese bar around the corner we could move to... 3. During the switch of shifts, the restaurant turned into complete chaos. New visitors would hang 3-4 jackets upon the jackets of the 1st shift visitors. Some jackets from the hangers were on the floor and were walked over. This restaurant did not meet my expectations.

2 options for the main course, plus a fixed appetizer sampler & dessert. Tasty and eclectic dishes. The chef can also provide a vegetarian option given notice. Good wines, nice cocktails, and quite good service. Our food was a bit slow, the 2nd seating crowd all arrived before we could pay

Il posto è carino, informale, il servizio ottimo e infatti proprio per il servizio dispiace dare una recensione così negativa. Purtroppo il tasto dolente è ciò che viene servito: non metto in dubbio che ci sia dietro un grande sforzo ma purtroppo il risultato per me è tremendo. I gusti sono audaci, quindi se vi va di provare qualcosa di particolare magari può piacere ma io non tornerò.

Atmospheric restaurant. Starters are simply delicious. Main course was really good! Wine tasty and affordable. Service fine. They definitely work hard and the staff is friendly, but character/personality is a bit lacking. Is that due to the crowds? Price-quality is perfectly fine here!

Really fun experience here with great ambience. The main dishes were incredible! Don't come hungry though, since food comes in very small portions and takes a while. There was only one person cooking and we ended up sitting for about 3 hours.

Good location and very sympathetically decorated. Food quality was mediocre. A set menu will have to be better for all customers. Some dishes were quite tasteless. Sweet staff. Price/quality is extremely out of proportion.

A great tent, very good atmosphere and decor and fantastic food. The menu changes every month and the only choice you make is between fish or meat. As a starter you get a platter with starters to share, a very nice start to the evening. The service is incredibly friendly and attentive. Perhaps a little more attention could be paid to empty glasses, but that is only a small point of feedback. She noticed that we were celebrating a birthday without mentioning it and on our own initiative we were given a festive dessert. Top!

Set menus, 3 options, 3 courses - selection of delicious appetisers then meat, fish, veg. All very good. Service lovely. Quite cosy seating but nice environment.

Last Friday (24/5) we ate at that restaurant with 7 people on the occasion of our friend's 50th birthday. What should have been a fun evening with delicious food turned out to be a big disappointment. We were really looking forward to it, but the bald, old man at the counter (owner?) was clearly not. Shortly after arrival we were very unpleasantly surprised by his gruff and very rude attitude. We had already reserved and paid for a table for 8 people a few months ago. Unfortunately, a friend could not come due to illness. The man reacted very indignantly, then said “then I could have sold this table” and removed the plate and cutlery with much fanfare. Where was girlfriend number 7 supposed to sit? We were totally flabbergasted by his rude attitude and comment. It was because we had already paid, but otherwise we would have immediately gotten up and walked away. The acoustics in the room were terrible. I could barely understand my neighbor (across the street). The bald old man then stood at the end of the tables to explain the menu. Because this was inaudible due to the very poor acoustics, I kindly asked him (after he had finished talking) to repeat it on the other side of the table. Very sullen and rude, he pointed out the menu very irritated and said that there was only a starter, main and dessert and walked away without any further text or explanation! So rude, he should be ashamed of himself, that's not how you treat customers! Fortunately, our savior was there, his young colleague (with mustache), who still spoke to us with a smile and hospitality. He saved the day (evening)! For the rest of the evening we were served by this friendly young man and we were still able to continue our evening somewhat pleasantly. Thank you for this! The old, bald man can learn something from this! The food was not really tasty or special, we expected much more, especially considering the reviews. The vegetarian options were also disappointing. For all of us once and never again. There are so many nicer restaurants (with friendly service) in this area. Avoid this place, it is absolutely not worth it (anymore).

We were glad that we made a change in plans and booked a dinner for 6. It was a perfect way to end our day touring Amsterdam. The seasonal menu was original and delicious. We had a chance to comfortably visit and enjoy a meal together. All of us chose the Halibut with candied lemon risotto, bisque beurre blanc, caramelized fennel and sea lavender. We also selected the recommended wine which paired perfectly. Of course the fixed menu ended with a wonderful dessert. Service was friendly and attentive.

The food was very good and the changing menu is very impressive. Unfortunately the service is super chaotic and no one felt responsible to refill our wine - 1 hour before the main course. When we asked, we were told that the bottle had been lost and that we still had to pay for the glasses we had drunk so far...as if it were our fault.

We happened on this place in the afternoon while a man was carrying food in. Turns out it was the chef and after a pleasant chat we booked it for the same evening. What good luck! The fixed 3 course meal was very well done. The starters were a mixed platter of 5 share plates with some outstanding fresh bread. Chose the duck for our main and it was faultless. The dessert of rhubarb was delicious with the smallest complaint that i wish it had a bit more texture. We also enjoyed a bottle of a Merlot/Pinot blend which we felt was reasonably priced. Topping it of was the good service and buzzy, friendly atmosphere. We had great conversations with others near by, making the entire evening a wonderful experience. Definitely would come again!

An excellent eating experience. No stress around menus as the only choice you have to make is between meat or fish for your main. Five delicious and varied starters kicked things off. Deep fried spiced mussel got very high marks. Asparagus with orange and sea fennel flavour also memorable. Duck main with salsa verde and mash absolutely hit the spot. Rhubarb and meringue desert beautifully finished everything off. Service was exactly right. Ambience lovely with some great sounds adding to an exceptional evening. Go, it’s great!

I would give them a 3.5. The food was pretty good, the starters did not come out very warm which was disappointing, especially for the fried mussel. I did like all the different starters we got to try. The mains were pretty good - I especially enjoyed the fish although it was a very small piece. It just felt a bit like a food assembly line, churning out tables because of how popular the restaurant is. Overall a bit of a disappointing Condé Nast recommendation.

Balthazar is brilliant and don’t be put off by the fixed menu, the unusual food is cooked so well you will love it. There are 2 sittings with only two choices to make - what wine to drink and the one of two choices of main course. Staff are lovely and super helpful and the size of the place means you enjoy the full atmosphere.

10/10 Highly recommend! The food was absolutely amazing. We made reservations and got seated right away when we arrived. What I enjoyed most was watching the chef push out each dish with so much care and attention to detail. Huge kudos to him for maintaining the volume of guests coming in and making sure food is served promptly.

Hmmm may have been an off night possibly but was massively underwhelmed. Sat in a freezing cold dining room with no heating on and a door open in pouring wet rain, really strange over confident service, felt so unwelcome. Cooking was hard to remember looking back, Nothing jumped out, nothing that bad. Can’t imagine going back but fair play maybe we got them on an off night. Touristy not in a good way, guests bathroom was unpleasant, again to be fair wasn’t a crazy expensive meal but basic things were all ignored.

Cute concept but the food is very hit & miss, and the lighting is such that you feel like you are under interrogation. Overall, I would not go back.

My wife and I had a lovely meal here on our first night in Amsterdam. All the food was delicious, atmosphere was cozy and inviting and the service was great. Cant thank them enough for a wonderful experience and evening.

A super nice find in De Jordaan! The set menu under €45 for a 3-course meal is fantastic. The main room felt a bit cramped, but the impeccable service and surprisingly good food compensated. It's super casual, nothing fancy, creating a relaxed vibe. The wine by the glass didn't quite match the quality of the food, but overall, a pleasant experience. A gem for those looking for affordability without compromising taste. Bonus point to their ever changing set menu: I will definitely come back!

Really enjoyable dining experience. Getting to sample all of the starters was brilliant. The mains were all delicious (visited in March '23 so cannot recall exactly what we had 😅). Desert was a chocolate mouse with roasted nuts, salt, and olive oil, it was phenomenal. The menu changes every two weeks and I am really excited to call back again soon! The staff were all very friendly and the open kitchen it a great touch. The small dining room gives a real cozy vibe but does not feel like you are getting too familiar with the other diners.

Eten was lekker maar niet geweldig. Leuke hapjes als voorgerecht, sommigen waren bijzonder en smaakvol maar lang niet allemaal. Hoofdgerecht was daarentegen zeker de moeite waard (vis). Toetjes waren een papje (weet niet of dit de bedoeling was of dat het te lang had staan wachten voordat het bij de tafel kwam), veel te zoet en geen structuur. Bediening komt gehaast en ongeïnteresseerd over. Niet de moeite waard om nog eens terug te komen.

A french style restaurant with delicious food and nice service. The space is small with few tables but still cozy !

Starters were not good but the rest was excellent.

My wife and I had dinner there when in Amsterdam but we had to book way ahead as the place is very popular. People seated near us actually travelled across from England just for dinner. Met the team and the food was fantastic set menu. I have eaten in restaurants all around the world but this lovely team delivered a fantastic meal, great wine and extremely good service . Highly recommend

Heerlijk gegeten en gedronken. Fantastische gerechten. Voorgerecht, main course en nagerecht super. De koffie met Callebout chocolade afgeschaafd er bij maakte het af. Top.

Amazing! Good was great, service was fantastic.

Cannot recommend enough! Food is incredible, ambiance is cozy, elegant but unpretentious. The staff was out of this world and so welcoming to us. I'm pescatarian and they altered the tasting menu to my dietary needs for both my friend and I and it was delicious. When I am back in AMS, I will be back here
