The frozen Margarita was worthless, other cocktails were mediocre compared to the Ocura hotel, no comparison in terms of level, a pity it was no longer what it once was!

They did a good gluten free burger.

Great bartender, but unfortunately she’s working alone, which leads to longer waiting times. A pity, because the service is otherwise excellent.

We loved the service and location of this restaurant. We ate outside and watched the people go by. There is a fountain close to the outdoor tables, which adds a nice ambiance and cools the air during a hot day. We enjoyed our food, but it was less than we expected. However, that didn't detract from how it tasted, and we give this place a definite Thumbs Up for travelers.

Ging met mijn 2 kleinzonen naar het DeLaMar theater en vooraf gegeten bij Americain! Mooi tafeltje aan het raam, heerlijk gegeten en zeer vriendelijke bediening!

Hele fijne high tea gehad - de bediening is supervriendelijk en denkt graag met je mee bij voedingsrestricties. Ook komen ze geregeld bij je tafeltje om te vragen of je nog iets nodig hebt. De hapjes en thee waren heerlijk! En de stijl van het pand helpt natuurlijk ook mee ;-)

The bitterballen and Caesar salad were both delicious, and the drinks were just as tasty. The atmosphere was lovely too. Just a heads-up: it’s self-seating - we waited for a bit before realizing we had to seat ourselves!

Drinks were fine, but staff seemed busy with their own tasks rather than helping guests. We waited a long time to order, they forgot our bitterballen, and when we asked, there was no apology—just a vague update. Feels like they need a push to actually focus on service.

De kwaliteit van het eten wat geserveerd werd was prima, maar de clotted cream voor de scones werd vergeten. Water voor de thee werd pas gebracht nadat we hier twee keer om hebben gevraagd.

We hadden een theater arrangement, 3 gangen, gang 1 en 2 ging prima, dessert helaas niet op tijd, ivm aanvang voorstelling, erg jammer. En een Affligem biertje in een Heineken glas ? Ook jammer…

de eerste 10 minuten werden we aan tafel volledig genegeerd. uiteindelijk zelf naar de bar gelopen om te vragen of we een drankje mochten bestellen, toen kwam er iemand naar onze tafel. na vermelden: we zitten al 10 minuten te wachten" was haar reactie. ja? en? wat wil je drinken? de andere bediening die de rest van de avond kwam maakte het enigszins goed met hun vriendelijke toon maar er was duidelijk te weinig personeel. we hadden het theater menuutje, dat was helemaal prima ; ook vwb tijd.

We had a company dinner for 15 pax. The venue itself was great, smooth process during booking and preparation, delicious food and the best asset of Cafe Amricain is the crew. Pleasant and professional waitress from Ukraine. Service alwas with a smile.

Een belevenis om hier ontspannen te zitten en te genieten van lunch of diner. Eten is vers en culinair. Mooie smaak combinaties.

Beiden hadden we croquetten besteld, toen deze kwamen was het een verassing om te zien dat er geen "gewoon" brood bijzat maar een soort (iets te hard gebakken) stukje geroosterd brood, niet wat ik me voorstel bij croquetten. Voorts waren de frietes mét schil, dat stond niet zo op de kaart vermeld en ik snap dat ook niet, frites horen zonder schil en geef de klant in ieder geval de keuze (ik kan geen aardappelschillen verdragen dus heb de friet niet gegeten) Tot besluit, om 6,50 te durven vragen voor een glas chardonnay wat duidelijk tekenen van EB vertoont (de hoeveelheid wijn was werkelijk véél te weinig) vond ik toch wat erg met de focus op marge maken. Ik weet het is Amsterdam maar dit soort prijzen zijn niet normaal

I went there for an afternoon tea with a friend. The cafe's design is gorgeous, and our waitress Anne was friendly. However, the taste of pretty much everything was subpar. Scones were too hard and too sweet (for a scone), the soup was too salty, and the small dessert pieces were not really tasty - we actually couldn't finish them I think. Furthermore, I think they didn't read our food preferences/restrictions as we specified on our reservation - so Anne had to ask us again. They had this nice tea tray with different flavored tea boxes. However, they were all too packed with flavor that I wanted to have just plain English breakfast tea. We also didn't have anything to put the loose tea leaves inside the cups. So I requested English breakfast tea and a filter for the teas from the bar, since I couldn't spot Anne. The bartender insisted that we already had both on our table. She didn't give me anything and just walked away to the other side. She gaslit me so good that I actually went back, opened and smelled all the teaboxes again to see if I missed the breakfast tea, and there were none :D We also frantically searched for a bag, strainer or filter for the loose teas at the table but couldn't find any. Another waiter saw us confused and he ended up bringing us English breakfast tea bags and filters for the loose teas. Overall, I wouldn't pay 41,5 euros for this experience, or visit here again.

Update: Once again we had a nice seat after a performance at Delamar Theater. I continue to regret that there is no sweet white wine available. The appetizer board was delicious. ------------------------------ Ended up here after an evening at Paradiso for a nightcap. A relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff and excellent service. We sat until closing time. Too bad there was no good sweet wine in the range. You can't have everything, right? 😉

Great bar and very nice staff! I was staying at the hotel and it was ideal to sit at the bar for a beer every now and then. The staff is fantastic and ensures that you don't miss anything. I'll definitely be back. Thanks Sara and cousin! PS, the Cow was unfortunately closed..;-)

One of our favorite spots around Leidseplein, where you can sit in front of the window with a view of the square, passing trams, people walking past and the fountain. There is also a terrace, with heaters and rugs for when it is chilly. The service is friendly and attentive and one of the ladies is smiley and up for a laugh. The (white) wine is ok, and the bitterballen are of good quality and a generous portion (8).

De sfeer van Americain is geweldig, bijzonder mooi de Art deco stijl. Het ligt om de hoek van De la Mar waar we musical geboekt hadden. Vooraf theatermenu geboekt. Het bezoek in Americain verliep deels naar wens. De bediening had duidelijk moeite. Het hoofdgerecht kwam na meer dan een uur en dat is veel te lang, terwijl het voorgerecht binnen no time op tafel stond. We haalden het dessert dan ook niet meer. Mochten daarvoor terug komen maar toen was het restaurant al leeg en voelde de sfeer wat raar. Het werd dus goed opgelost maar met een set menu had het uitserveren wel veel sneller gekund.

Review for Hotel America Restaurant We recently visited Hotel America for a special evening, hosting friends and family who flew in from overseas. This was our first time dining at the restaurant, and while the experience had its highlights, there were also areas that could use attention. The setting and ambiance of the restaurant were stunning, creating an atmosphere that felt celebratory and refined. The Challenges: Unfortunately, the evening was marred by extremely long wait times for food. While we made the most of the evening, enjoying meaningful conversations during the wait, it’s hard to ignore how much this detracted from the overall experience. The delays weren’t due to lack of effort from the staff—they were clearly understaffed for the number of tables being served that night. This is not a reflection of the team working that evening, who maintained their composure and kindness under pressure, but it is something for management to consider seriously. Recommendation to Management: If sufficient staffing cannot be secured, it would be better to reduce the number of bookings to ensure guests can enjoy the high-quality experience the restaurant aspires to deliver. Overburdened staff and extended wait times diminish the overall experience, even when other elements—such as food and ambiance—are of excellent quality. Final Thoughts: While we appreciated the staff’s hard work and the beauty of the restaurant, the long wait times left us feeling disappointed, especially for such an important evening. This was a night we had looked forward to for a long time, and while we took responsibility for making the evening meaningful for ourselves, we won’t return due to this experience. To the staff: congratulations on maintaining such professionalism and friendliness under pressure. To management: I hope this feedback helps in ensuring that future guests can fully enjoy everything Hotel America has to offer.

Leider kann ich nicht allzu viel gutes schreiben da es dies auch nicht unbedingt gab. Der Start des 4 Gänge Menüs starte mit einem Brötchen nach ca.30 Minuten da war alles noch ok anschliessend kam ein hauch aus Shrimps und Avocado sehr Lecker aber viel zu wenig. Nach dieser Stärkung warteten wir 1 Stunde und 25 Minuten auf die Blumenkohl Suppe die es dann nicht mehr gab anstelle dieser gab es eine Schwammerl Päckchen Suppe besser als nichts. Irgendwann kam dann auch das Hauptgericht ich kenne viele Kantinen die dies wesentlich besser zubereitet hätten. Nach 3 Stunden und 5 Minuten war mir das weitere warten auf ein Dessert vergangen. So ein schlecht Organisiertes Abendessen habe ich noch nicht erlebt. Beim Verabschieden lief uns der Kellner hinter Und entschuldigte sich für die Unannehmlichkeit für die 185,- € in den Mühl geworfen, ich bin kein Freund von Rezessionen aber dieses Abendessen hat mir und meiner Frau die komplette Vorfreude auf das anstehende Feuerwerk genommen.

After a bumpy start (wrong menu, empty salt and pepper grinders were replaced by other empty grinders), we had a pleasant diner. Our waitress was warm and looked after us every once in a while. The burrata with grilled vegetables was tasty and well plated. The steak tartare was well seasoned, but the plate looked a bit to minimal to my taste and the tartare was a bit to smooth to my taste. I like little chunks of meat in it. The salmon was cooked to precision and the hollandaise and chervil paste gave nice companion to the fish. For desert we shared the chocolat truffon. Elegant, not to sweet, and just enough for the two of us.

Mijn 82 jarige moeder heeft al bijna 60 jaar herinneringen aan deze mooie plek. Als verassing hadden mijn Australiische vrouw en ik haar uit genodigd voor verjaardag lunch. Hele vriendelijk geholpen door een zeer attente medewerkster uit Frankrijk die accentloos switchde tussen Nederlands, Engels en Frans. Het was zeer geslaagd. 🙏🏽

Mooie locatie in Art Decostijl. Gewoon goed eten, niets bijzonders, maar wel in orde. Vriendelijke bediening. Wij zaten vlakbij de ingang en daar waaide een tochtig windje, toen er een stel naast ons kwam zitten, nog een tafeltje dichter bij de ingang, had ik er geen last meer van. Ik heb trouwens niet om een andere plek gevraagd.

Een gezellige avond naar de musical De Jordaan is ernstig verstoord door het theater menu. Slecht eten, slechte bediening. Joop van de Ende moet de catering maar weer snel zelf gaan doen, blamage voor het theater

Aardige bediening van jong personeel en zijn goed op de hoogte. Het is alleen donker om de menukaart te lezen. Het eten is goed

We werden gastvrij ontvangen, de gereserveerde tafel aan het raam was mooi, met keurig een kaartje erop met mijn naam. Het eten was prima, erg vriendelijke bediening, dus ik kom zeker terug!

Middelmatig eten, vreselijke bediening. De werknemers liepen van tafel tot tafel en hadden geen idee waar hun bestelling naartoe moest. We moesten erg lang wachten. De werknemers leken wel robots, er kon geen lachje vanaf. Nee, hier werden we niet blij van.

Heerlijk gegeten leuke ambiance en vriendelijke bediening. Altijd een goed adres om af te spreken. Ik kom hier daarom vaker!

We went for afternoon tea. The dishes were all delicious, and we could savor six kinds of tea. We also enjoyed Art Deco style classical atmosphere of the cafe. The waiter was kind and timely came to ask if we needed more hot water. The restroom was also classical and was kept clean.

Surprisingly good food! The cooks know what they are doing. Original recipes, inventive and the dishes look stunning. Beautiful restaurant in art deco style, very kind waitress, highly recommended!

You have to see the place and feel the atmosphere to fully appreciate it. A regular place for me to stay (Above in Hotel) whilst in Amsterdam with friends (Dutch & English) or on business. Met up with Jon BonJovi, as well as Tina Turner, Tom Petty and Lou Reed in the past.

I have been to multiple bars this one is the best. I recommend over the tailor because of the manager/supervisor Jolanda...to tell you the truth best bar.

Art Deco interior. Love this place. An oase of tranquility right next door of the Leidse Plein. They have the best working space area as well! Hidden gem for a work space..

A nice relaxing place with delicious cocktails!

We had a drink at the Bar Americain, part of the Clayton Hotel group, located next door. We went there on a Friday at 8 p.m., and there was no waiting time. The atmosphere was pleasant, with beautiful surroundings, the walls are decorated with a beautiful collection of photographs of international celebrities. The staff were welcoming and the bar is in a great location. The cocktails were very good, served in beautiful glasses and presented with care. I opted for the Dutch Delight, concocted with Ketel One vodka (a Dutch wheat vodka), Geniève alcohol (malt wine), Coebergh Red Berry (red fruit liqueur), brown sugar and lemon juice. My boyfriend chose the Jambalaya, an exotic blend of coconut juice, orange, mango, pineapple and grenadine syrup. We also had a charcuterie and cheese platter, well stocked and perfectly matched to accompany our drinks. As well as fried shrimp, also very good. Overall, our experience at Bar Americain was very pleasant.

Very very very slow service. We not only made several eye contact attempts but also said “excuse me” and “pardon” multiple times, and there was no response. Please avoid!

don’t get the espresso martinis they were like chocolate milkshakes

All cocktails were pretty balanced and the young waiter who took care of us was very attentive. They were also happy to make classics unavailable on the menu and the music was great. We sat at a table in the corner and watched one of the barmen keep the guests at the bar laughing and entertained. Perfect place for a nightcap.

Service was pretty bad, really slow, we were a group of 4, felt ignored for a good while. Margarita just tastes salty and sour, not good at all, both cocktails really weak. Asked for tap water a couple of times and received 1 glass in total. Some friends arrived right before closing time and were denied for a cocktail although we told them 5 min before that 2 more friends were coming. Such a nice location and atmosphere, we were a bit disappointed from the poor service and drinks ;(

Een high tea gedaan met gelukkig goed gezelschap, maar dat is geen aanrader hier. Service is niet naar verwachting. Zo'n verschrikkelijk mooi pand en dan moet je smeken of ze aub bij je tafeltje willen komen zodat jij daarmee je geld uiteindelijk aan hun kunt geven. Daarbij vraag je om water en krijg je op een snikhete dag lauw water, niks geen opmerking, want een koelkast kan altijd stuk gaan. Maar goed, zoals gezegd, gelukkig met hele lieve en leuke mensen op pad dus de sfeer maken we zelf wel en we lachen erom :)

It's a tradition for me to go to the Bar Americain every time I am in Amsterdam and have a martini!! The bartenders are extremely friendly and super professional. It's a great place to enjoy a very well-made drink.

De service is very slow. Seems that a 1 person table isn't worthwhile

Went in for a quick cocktail and we were so happy that they made our favorite Passion Bay Breeze, complete with passionfruit garnish. Amazing!!

Although quite crowded, it’s a cult place which has an impressive ambiance, which I would not forget for a long time. The waiters are very busy so that they can forget the orders eventually. You might need to remind them. Seems to be very elegant but not expensive as I thought it would be indeed. I wish I can come again and can have time to drink more beers with happiness next time.

Nice venue and friendly service

Excellent cocktails made by perhaps one of the very few classically trained bartenders in Amsterdam. Plus, the DJ spins at a volume easy for keeping a conversation in a cost atmosphere.

Een paar weken geleden een enthousiast verhaal in de PS van Het Parool gelezen, dus op naar de bij ons uit vroeger tijden bekende en geliefde bar. Aanvankelijk werden we aangenaam verrast door de mooie nieuwe entree aan de buitenzijde: een aanwinst. Eenmaal binnen bleek het een deceptie; op zich mooi verbouwd met een absoluut betere plaats en vormgeving van de bar zelf, vond ik de kleurstelling alles behalve met een bar te maken te hebben. Overwegend Witte muren! In een bar! Met dito plafond! Dat kan toch beter….heb je leuke banken en stoeltjes, sluit de kleuren daar dan op aan. En een bar met een nep marmeren blad, ik zit niet bij Van Dobbe! Waarom nu niet een houten blad, de afwerking met messing rand had een veel warmer gevoel gegeven. En dan last maar zeker niet least: de bediening….wat een droevenis, na 10 minuten aan de bar werden we eindelijk opgemerkt. Op onze vraag of er bij het bier ook een borrel kon komen werd beantwoord met : een borrel wat is dat…kortom management en directie van het hotel dat moet beter, bel anders met Jan Buijs in Haarlem, top barstende die z’n vak in ieder geval begrijpt en een bar in z’n eentje kan draaien en niet vier mensen die elkaar hoofdzakelijk in de weg lopen.

The senior bartender is an OG. Sings along old school rock tracks that play in the background and makes good cocktails. We had an Old Fashioned, An Acoustic and 2 Baileys Coffees (served warm) with some nuts. A nice experience and will surely go back. A star less here for the overall service (other staff), full marks for the OG bartender though.

Perfect spot for a quick pre-dinner drink. The free bar snack is truly standout - a mix of nuts, exotic dried fruit and corn all gently curried and served in a carafe - a modern take on Bombay Mix. Genuinely the best I have experienced. Super friendly staff too :)

Went in for breakfast, elegant space with beautiful decor in a high ceiling space. Felt very luxurious. Service was quick. They had vegan options: fruit salads, oat or soy cappuccino and avocado toast

Unique location inside a stunning art deco building. Food and drinks are not as special as the interiors. Neverthless, if you have never been, it is worth the visit.
