Visited Bolenius today. Super tasty food with surprising dishes. 1x Dutch cuisine menu and 1x pure plant menu. All dishes from both menus were well-seasoned and beautifully presented. Above all, a very good host/sommelier with a lot of knowledge of the profession. We would like to give an extra shout out to Jop!

This dinner was outstanding. While I’m not 100% a vegetarian, the plant menu blew me away, was so filling, and came with so many surprises. The service is warm, informative, and customized to our experience—everyone on the staff seemed to want to get to know us. The choreography of this team, generous portions & fresh ingredients, and sheer tastiness of each bite made this one of the top meals I’ve had in Europe. As a tourist, this was totally worth a trip out of city center to try something refreshing and luxurious. Get the beet, the beet is real good.

After a delicious and surprising start with snacks, we enjoyed several courses. Always beautiful combinations of flavors and colors supplemented with suitable beers. The clay beet was a party in itself because of the serving and the taste in combination with a most delicious sauce. Stumbled upon this place while staying in nearby hotel. Travelled to Amsterdam from Toronto to run the marathon. What a great restaurant. Amazing food, presentation, service. First time being in a green Michelin star restaurant. So good! I might even get a pb from all the plant based food.!

Had a lovely dinner here with my mum for her birthday. Dishes were nicely presented and had a lovely flavour, the vegetables really stood out from everything else. They were so generous with the wine that we struggled keeping up! The service was great, friendly and relaxed. We couldn't finish a glass of wine due to our poor tolerance but they took it off the bill. Great service. The atmosphere is something to be worked on in my opinion, the weather outside was bad, which caused it to be somewhat dark and dreary inside as well.

The restaurant is located on the “Zuidas” of Amsterdam. This area has a lot of big office buildings and is not as lively when they are closed. There is enough payed parking in a short walk distance, no valet parking. The restaurant itself looks modern, serene. Staff is friendly and as soon as we were seated the first small bites arrived. Most of the menu is based around vegetables because the restaurant has its own garden at the busy Zuidas. We had a three course lunch menu with the first two courses being vegetables and the final course fish. I found the taste sometimes a bit blend. Missing not only seasoning but an exciting sauce to get a bit more flavor differences out of the vegs. The restaurant has a terrace and staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The wine was great and they also have a juice menu. All in all for me the rating gets three stars because of the combination between the (personal) bit blend flavors and price. Definitely a nice experience and a dream for vegans! For me it just did not overwhelm as much as I hoped.

Had a delicious meal at restaurant Bolenius, where vegetables take center stage. Surprised by my dear wife, we went to dinner at Bolenius restaurant on Saturday evening. I know the restaurant from the stories, but had never eaten there. The restaurant is located on the Zuidas in Amsterdam. Not a place you just walk past. The welcome was friendly and we immediately received a few delicious appetizers in the form of a 'bitter garnish'. Chef Luc Kusters himself came to explain the menu and dishes and explained his vision and his signature dish; the beet in clay. Of course we went for the 'full experience' and opted for the Dutch Cuisine menu, a combination of vegetarian dishes, but also squid, halibut and lamb. Each delicious dish, sustainably prepared and with local ingredients. The wines were also of a high standard and paired excellently with the dishes. Definitely a restaurant to come back to again, in a different season, with completely different dishes. Still have some time to save...

Bolenius, the first restaurant to receive a Michelin Green star, serves us culinary fireworks. Like De Kas in Amsterdam, it's also light years ahead of American plant-based cuisine, though the squid, halibut and ten-hour lamb wrapped in sealettuce were world-class as well. Twenty-four vegetable kitchen garden plate? Serve it up. White asparagus sorbet? They got you. Beetroot cooked in French clay for 90 minutes then hammered opened at your table? All set. Bolenius is about 4 miles south of Amsterdam’s Centrum, and where the city moved the entire business district 30 years ago. In that sense the neighborhood has that “just-finished” quality of Alpharetta, Georgia, or Assembly Row, Somerville in Boston. Without question one of the five best meals of my life, however, right up there with Eleven Madison Park.

Being a vegetarian for many years, I was under the impression that this restaurant will truly impress me. However, I found myself begging my partner to help me eat my food, as I was simply unable to stomach these dishes. It's difficult to describe, but the food is underwhelming and overwhelming at the same time. The flavours do not harmonise at all. The presentation is lovely, but the tastes are simply awful. Honestly, I simply wanted to pay, get up and leave without finishing the 6 courses. Needless to say, I truly regret opting to add the baked beetroot to the menu (for which you have to pay extra). Finally, I was really, really put off by the staff upselling dishes/add-ons to us, which happened 3 times during the course of the meal. For a restaurant of this calibre and with this pricing, having (this many) upsells feels cheap and honestly, annoying.

I’ve been vegan for 13 years and it’s a rare occurrence to experience vegan fine dining. As a self-described “vegan foodie”, Bolenius delivers. The restaurant atmosphere is modern yet unpretentious. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. The food is wonderfully elegant. Bolenius truly achieves what it sets out to do in celebrating and elevating plants in a way I have not ever experienced before. From the pickled onion and horseradish sorbet on a sausage-stuffed cone amuse bouche, to the strawberry and elderflower vinegar coulis with white bean ice cream dessert, every single bite was simply beautiful. Bolenius was the highlight of my time in Amsterdam.

The two of us had the vegetarian and non-vegetarian 6 course menu with the additional signature course so we could try both.

It's a great location and the food is really good. Interesting how they focus on vegetable courses and have their own garden. I do believe the quality is on the low side for a Michelin star at this price point. They charge almost the same as a three star restaurant (e.g. Librije and try to upsell even further) while they serve average 1 star at best. A great night, but mediocre experience and price/quality.

Had a very bad experience. I was bob and wanted a drink, my wife doesn't drink alcohol, I got a can of fake coke without a glass, I asked for a glass with ice cubes, I didn't get an answer. 2 older people in the service who actually had no idea, got everything mixed up, the man had a serious dandruff problem, his clothes were blowing over our table, he looked like he had just finished doing some work at home and came straight to his work. We often go to star restaurants and are not snobs, look at my other reviews, we eat overall and are easily satisfied, but the Bolenius was very substandard with food and service. Definitely not worth repeating!!!

Definitely recommended for delicious food! Very good that the emphasis is on vegetables and sustainability. In terms of cuisine, truly Dutch with products from the region, which I would definitely come back for! Had a really good meal at Bolenius. Only the service could be better as a Michelin restaurant. Upon arrival everything went very smoothly, we immediately received the appetizers and we were told to eat them immediately so that it would not cool down and the ice cream would not melt and then the chef himself came immediately to go through the menu with us and we really enjoyed it. had to ask if they would like to enjoy the amuses first before going through the menu. These are the details that you should be looking for at a star restaurant, of course, so something can be said about that. We also sat next to a very noisy group that sometimes made it impossible to hear each other and you expect a Michelin restaurant to radiate more tranquility so that everyone can enjoy without inconvenience because this does not do justice to the atmosphere because the restaurant itself is very cozy and nice in terms of atmosphere. . So definitely recommended, but there are still areas for improvement that could have been good at a Michelin restaurant.

Went here with my partner because we saw that they recently obtained their green star and wanted to see how and why! We were far from disappointed. - Food: I've read here and there that there were some funky combinations of flavors, but this is what I am looking for. In the end, it's all about having a different experience than a traditional restaurant and I believe they've done a great job there. The combinations were unexpected but you really feel like the ingredients perfectly match each other in most cases. For example the 5 times lactic dessert was a great example where different textures and flavours are combined to perfection. Also, my favorite dish (the sole with apples and brown butter sauce was amazing). At each dish, I was like "Wow, I wouldn't have tried that in a regular place, and you end up discovering new things, educating your palate. - Service: The service was great, great attention to details without being too rigid. Special thanks to Thijs at the end that showed us around the cellar, the restaurant and even their garden in zuidas despite being the last ones to leave. - Atmosphere: I loved the casual feel of the place, it's all designed to make you feel like you're in your living room, not too fancy, nordic vibes but still clean and minimalistic. Really loved the fact that there are not too many seats, feels more intimate. The pricepoint is quite high, but worth it. Anyway, I highly recommend this place to anyone that is looking for a local cuisine, keen to try new stuff instead of the "classics".

We came here for lunch and it was very delicious. Besides main course they served entrees. I liked salt from Zeeland and that they have small garden near by where you can see how they grow vegetables for their kitchen. Waitress was friendly and explained everything, I liked they are polite and attentive. I liked they accept cash!! I didn’t like they served tap water and took 15 euro for it!!! It’s insane, the water is free everywhere in Amsterdam. I cannot give 5 stars and recommend it to my friends only because of it, I hope they will improve their service.

Expected more. Acquaintances were enthusiastic, but what was disappointing was the beetroot baked in clay. It should have been the icing on the cake of the surprise dinner (and for €25 you expect that), but the taste was very disappointing. In addition, the drinks were very expensive. The place is nicely decorated with minimalistic style. However, the overall experience leaves one ‘confused’, for a lack of a better word. The ingredients are certainly very fresh and you can tell lots of thought went into dishes but the taste is mediocre. I can’t say that I’d like to have any of the dishes again. Scallops, for example, were tasty, but the sauce that was paired with them didn’t go well - making the whole dish unable to live to its potential. The ice cream with liquorish was an interesting presentation but it just wasn’t tasty. The selection of wines and service was good. Overall, interesting experience but for this level of restaurant the dishes should be much more sharp.

We went in the evening, and tried both the vegetable and the dutch menu. The presentation was excellent. Unfortunately the flavours we often strong and lacking harmoney in their combinations. The truffle lacked intensity, and disappeared over a too darkly and intensely fried patato for instance. The Duck lacked its own flavour, probably due to anlacking malard reaction, and was overpowered rather than elevated by the plum reduction. The best parts were the puffed crispy sidedisbes.. The codfish and dutch shrimps had released a watery juice that lacked any concentration and just felt wet. When asked about non alcoholic coctails, we were advised fresh juices I had the red fruit and rosemary, which I couldn’t finish because the flavours just didn’t work together. I honestly would not go back considering all the good restaurants in Amsterdam. De Kas at the same price point is substantially superior.

The rating is in relation to the price of the restaurant. Me and my family had a terrible experience. Not only did it take waay too long, having fully digested each dish before the next one came, but also the service started as it should be and throughout the dinner became mostly absent, except for refilling our water cups constantly which costed a lot for (filtered) tab water from a country where tab water is not only potable but very good. Regarding the food, we had their asparagus menu, and even if you like asparagus this was too much. Dish after dish mostly the same texture and taste of white asparagus, down to the dessert: asparagus sorbet (it tasted literally like blended frozen white asparagus). This also brings me to the worst aspect of the experience: the fact that they have the audacity to say they offer a vegan menu, when what they did was replace the meat/fish with more asparagus! It was literally white asparagus with asparagus broth, asparagus foam, and asparagus sprinkles. No local wheat-based seitan, or local beans, or local potatoes, anything to add a texture or taste that is not white asparagus. It was truly disappointing, even if now my family still laughs about the surrealism of the experience.

However, many dishes felt not properly seasoned (in german: fade), so does not really feel like a Michelin-starred restaurant. Many thanks to Luc and Jop for the excellent service on our long evening of over 4 hours in your restaurant! We (couple) both had the Special Michelin TheFork menu and got the Signature Dish (fish dish) in addition to our 6 courses. All courses were prepared with fresh herbs and vegetables from your own garden. Especially the Plantbased menu was exceptional in its combination. Taste-wise, everything was very well coordinated and only one course had a taste surprise with light smoke flavors and spiciness. Whether this fit into the combination of courses is a matter of individual taste. Overall, the arrangement of the dishes was very nice and appealing to look at, which definitely had a positive impact on the taste experience. There were only a few small things to criticize in the high-quality star cuisine, so the degree of cooking of the beans was not optimal and individual menu components had already been arranged for a longer time, so the molds and crackers were a little too soft and therefore no longer crispy, the espresso at the end for 9.95 € was tasty okay, but clearly too cold - but as I said, these were only small things at a very high level. The wine accompaniment and selection by Jop was very good and also the explanations of the wines were top and fit perfectly with the individual courses.

Great place, great people, great food. We stumbled in quite by chance and were pleasently surprised. The ambience is understated, almost nordic, but still warm and welcoming. The noise level was very low so that a meaningful conversation at the table was possible. The services is excellent, very friendly and while it is a young group of people working here it is professional, and still welcoming. The team really made a positive difference. Now, the food. As mentioned we stumbled into this place without having planned so. The culinary journey the team took us on was great. From the kitchen greetings that had a great range of taste to the main course. I hade the sole and the combination of tastes was fantastic. I really loved it. If you look for a special place to go this is a great choice.

Wat een waanzinnig mooie avond hebben wij gehad bij Bolenius. Luc is een kunstenaar die zijn passie voor de Hollandse keuken echt doet spreken in zijn gerechten en service. Hij krijgt het daarmee voor elkaar om een team te creëren waar je U tegen zegt, die stuk voor stuk hart voor de zaak (en dus ook het product) hebben. Fab lunch experience, starting by welcome and dishes descriptions. Job was a great server, but they were all good. Amuse bouche 2 star Michelin quality, the most fab homemade bread, just enough dramatics to make experience stand out, but not enough to turn gimmicky. Dishes were very good, the only one that didn't gel with me was the watermelon "steak", its texture too off-putting, but everything else,superb. Great coffee, cute petit fours. Definitely will be back. Private dining room fitting up to 18, also impressive. €59 lunch set menu, €115 for dinner. A le carte was also available.

Sadly I was a little disappointed with lunch at Bolenius. The food was beautifully presented and the service was really good but I had higher expectations with the taste of the dishes. My monkfish main was undercooked and tough which was a shame. We did really enjoy the selection of Dutch cheeses for dessert and that there was Dutch wine on the menu.

Toprestaurant gelegen op een rustige plek buiten het toeristische hart van Amsterdam. Het loont echter de moeite om naar Amsterdam-Zuid af te zakken voor deze hoogstaande culinaire belevenis. Bolenius is gelegen in een modern pand met grote ramen en een stijlvolle aankleding. De tafels staan ruim van mekaar verwijderd zodat je in alle rust kan genieten van je maaltijd. De bediening is erg vriendelijk en zit niet om een grapje verlegen. Altijd fijn, personeel van een sterrenrestaurant dat zichzelf niet al te serieus neemt. En de gerechten? Die zijn fenomenaal. Wij lieten ons echter verleiden door de Dutch cuisine menu. Een heerlijke interpretatie van een aantal Nederlandse klassiekers. Elk bord was tot in de puntjes afgewerkt. De gerechten waren bijzonder goed uitgebalanceerd en een streling voor de smaakpapillen. Natuurlijk konden we het niet laten de 100% plantaardige signature dish van chef Luc Kesters te proberen: een rode biet uit de klei. De biet werd op voorhand urenlang gegaard in de klei. De ober kwam aan tafel de in klei verpakte biet los kloppen en prepareerde deze heerlijke groente met een sausje van morieljes. De biet was heerlijk mals en sappig. Een ervaring die je echt niet mag missen. De wijnen die we mochten proeven waren eveneens uitstekend. Een culinaire topavond, met een stevig prijskaartje, dat wel.

Amazing experience. Great ambience and waiters! Went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed! The meal: we went Friday May 26 which was the opening night of the asparagus event. We love asparagus, but could have never predicted how great each course would be. From small Bites, to appetizers, through each course and even the asparagus ice cream served with strawberry, rhubarb, ginger snap, and mint for dessert was incredible. So creative, fresh, and delicious. Easily the best meal we have ever had. As a change from the traditional Dutch meals we had, we left full but not overly heavy or weighed down from the outstanding courses. Highly recommend the additional wine pairing! A must do!!

We hebben heerlijk gegeten bij Bolenius. Gerechten zien er prachtig uit en qua smaak word je niet teleurgesteld. Veel gebruik van groenten en dat is verrassend lekker. Met allergieën en dieet wensen wordt goed rekening gehouden. Service is zonder uitzondering vriendelijk; professioneel maar toch niet stijf. Één kritisch puntje; alcoholvrije opties zijn nagenoeg beperkt tot alleen sappen. Dat vind ik jammer, omdat er tegenwoordig bijvoorbeeld best mooie 0.0 gin’s verkrijgbaar zijn (voor aperitief) en bij veel restaurants in deze klasse ook mooie alcoholvrije ‘cocktails’ worden geschonken als passende begeleiding bij gerechten. Très agréable découverte chez Bolenius. Nous avons adoré la qualité des produits et la sophistication du travail sur ceux-ci. La cuisine est résolument moderne, tout en montrant une belle originalité (ne serait-ce que parce que les produits sont locaux). Service adorable, nous remercions d'ailleurs encore le restaurant pour l'inattendue et très gracieuse touche d'attention finale.

Indrukwekkende ervaring, een lust voor oog en mond. Elke gerecht was met veel liefde met detail opgemaakt en gepresenteerd. De hele avond was een heerlijke smaakbeleving. Service was good. I would give the chef more stars for creativity and palting but other than that it is not worth the money. Not yummy food, desert tasted like old stale crushed cookie with some weird thing in it, tiny portions, overpowering truffels taste in every dish, including desert!!! plus, it is very very very expensive that it feels as if you are being ripped off your money. A dish that is supposedly has fish in it bht no you only get a foam that taste like fish over bunch of sea greens!!!but you pay $$$ for that...and They kept pouring our glasses with water from the faucet behind us (taste a bit saulty!) every now and then and charge us €40 for it. Unbelievable!!! Don't go there.

Don't go there! I don't recommend it. The old lady was rude and racist. She was not interested at all and play with her nails while taking our order. No eye contact and not professional. But while she serves other tables with dutch customers, she was very nice to them. About the food, it was low quality microwave / canned / frozen food. I'm curious, are the 5 stars ratings real ? I'm hoping they will take this complain serious and the next customers don't get the same bad experience like us.

Never had such an uninspired sauerkraut stew before. I can do this better myself. It was actually just potatoes and the sauerkraut was hard to find. Not even a juniper berry used. Hey, sorry about this. The sausage was tasty, unfortunately they put a rather unappetizing gravy over it. Not recommended and certainly not worth 17.50.
