Cozy. Quiet. Super friendly service. Excellent, selected and creative cuisine. Menu prices are an absolute steal. I will recommend it to all of my friends as a little insider tip :-)

The menu rotates and changes seasonally, using the freshest ingredients, techniques, and innovative cuisine. Always well prepared, and one of the better wine pairing restaurants out there. I have never felt anything but welcomed and appreciated by the staff.

Service top, food was tasty, but main course not good. Guinea fowl fillet well cooked and rock hard. Too bad, otherwise fine.

Een bijzonder kerstdiner op 1e kerstdag in dit restaurant. We hadden voor twee personen gereserveerd. Een zeer vriendelijke bediening deed zijn werk voortreffelijk. Een keuze van het menu was eenvoudig van opzet. Per gang slechts 2 opties. Vega of vlees/vis Voldoende tijd tussen de gangen. En een royale keuze uit passende wijnen.

Would definitely recommend this place! Food is very good and service is excellent. I have celiac disease and they were very careful and knowledgeable with it. Have been to several Michelin restaurants before where the service was not as good as in this restaurant.

Beautiful dishes, with refined flavors. We took the 3-course seasonal menu for €49.50. An extra 6.50 was charged for the Venison Steak without asking. Service was friendly and gave us some time between courses. Table for 2 just next to the bar/service, with a look behind the scenes. Felt a bit pushed away, even though I reserved on time. Saw the waiter uncork a bottle of wine with his teeth. Without asking, the olives and pieces of melon/fruit that we received at the start and had not yet been completely eaten, were taken from the table. Nice atmosphere, that's for sure...

De heilbot smaakte vooral zout en had net zo goed polak kunnen zijn; misschien was het dat zelfs. De bouillon van langoustine was flauw, en de langoustine zelf leek in de vorm van een tampongeperst met andere specerijen. Het resultaat was droog en had een nare bijsmaak. Ook de friet was veel te zout. Kortom, een grote misser. Het ganzenbord was overgaar, en het kaasdessert viel tegen: flauw, niet bijzonder en zonder echte smaak. Daarnaast waren alle porties extreem mager. Dit restaurant is voor mij een absolute no-go; ik zou hier nooit meer heen gaan.

Great restaurant with really good food. The portions are reasonable and the quality is top notch. On top of that the atmosphere is great and the service is extraordinary. The waiters and waitresses are super friendly and have an overview. They really pay attention to the details and are quick without begin disturbing all the time. Highly recommend!

Sirven un menú fijo con una opción de 3 , 4 y 5 platos disponibles. El menú tenía una interesante selección de platos con opciones vegetarianas y veganas. La comida era muy sabrosa y muy bien presentado. Lo único malo que diría es que una botella de agua tranquila cuesta 6 . 50 que nos pareció una estafa completa. Lo recomendaría.

Hemos estado cenando en Hemelse Modder durante más de 25 años y disfrutamos de nuestra visita dominical para conmemorar su 40 aniversario. Los huéspedes van desde turistas (como nosotros de Londres) y locales y el comedor principal estaba ocupado. Ambos tuvimos la sopa vegetariana de hongos seguido de platos de lubina y ganso (que no se ven a menudo en los menús en estos días) con un lado de papas fritas - ambos eran muy buenos. Nuestros desiertos de pastel de jengibre y pastel de cuajada de mora eran moros. Compartimos una botella de rojo y 2 Armagnacs para redondear una gran comida. El servicio como siempre fue profesional y servicial. Dada nuestra larga (distancia y tiempo) asociación con este restaurante somos un poco parciales, aunque deben estar haciendo algo bien para haber durado 4 décadas.

Went to dinner with colleagues, everything was delicious, highly recommend

we spotted you from across the canal, saw a happy group and investigated curiously. Thankfully there were a few tables available and we picked one near the happy throng. We were immediately charmed by the welcome and the interesting seasonal menu option. The food was very special, service too and the acoustic was good considering how busy and excited the restauarant was. Two hours later we knew we had had THE restaurant experience of Amsterdam.

Chocolate sauce and other deserts

On the "other side" of the RLD, a bustling place in a more quiet neighborhood. Pro: Most appreciated is a very flexible prix fixe menu for 3 or 4 courses, with plenty of choices. There is also a wine paring option, which I was glad to have taken. Some very interesting selections. Con: Only 2 people working the whole front of the house, which was an impossible situation. Could have been a meltdown, but these two handled with aplomb and good cheer. But, things were very slow. Still, what came out of the kitchen was on time even they were their own runners. Fair price for fine dining. Not stuffy atmosphere, but dress decently, please. Several corporate dinners of 8-10 people who were by definition loud and overall slowed things down for the whole place, but they pay the big bills.

We had a wonderful evening with delicious food at this charming restaurant near our hotel in Amsterdam. The staff was very friendly. I look forward to hopefully visiting it again on our next trip.

Spacious restaurant on a quiet canal in the heart of the city. They have curious dishes on the menu. You can put together a menu of 3, 4 or 5 courses yourself. The staff was very helpful and despite the crowds, they took their time.

Came here by recommendation of our hotel. The ambiance is lovely, couldn't ask for more. The pace of the meal was slower than I was used to, but it really lets you relax and just enjoy the night.

Betjeningen var i top. God tjener med super præsentation af maden. Lokalet og stemningen virkeligt hyggeligt, MEN maden var desværre noget gammeldags og uinspirerende. Vi havde ikke Tilberedning og råvarer fejler ikke noget, men vi havde ikke regnet med en menu fra 1980erne.

De Hemelse Modder bestaat 40 jaar! Het was ook voor ons als vegetariers een fijne plek om te eten. Niet goedkoop maar je hebt wel waar voor je geld. Heel smakelijk en attente bediening!

Took my friend here for his last night in Amsterdam, and couldn’t have picked a better spot for a Monday evening. The restaurant was packed all night and had a great atmosphere. Great wine recommendations as well! Will be back ❤️ Great for a family dinner as well.

A short walk from Amsterdam Central this restaurant had great food that was presented beautifully. I made the reservation online and they were so accommodating. There really is something for everyone here from vegetarians, to gluten free they are inclusive with their menu which made our dining experience even better.

American who has been here 4 times now. I literally stop in Amsterdam whenever I can to come here. I can’t say I know the world but 24 countries deep this is easily my favorite restaurant in the world.

It was their anniversary week and they had a 3 or 4 course meal with 3 choices per course. It was excellent from the appetizer to dessert. A little off the main streets but well worth finding it. Our front desk person at Hotel Mansion recommended it and he was spot on.

Looking for a non-tourist "locals" quality restaurant in the Nieuwmarkt area of Amsterdam, not far from the Amsterdam Centraal Station? This restaurant on Oude Waal near the clocktower, celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2024 with a special additional menu, is a foodie haven for locals celebrating special occasions. They offer a 3 (E 50), 4 (E 60) and 5 (E 67) course menu with multiple choices for appetizers, soup, mains, cheese course and dessert on both the regular and anniversary menus- can choose from both. Vegan alternatives also available. We had the rabbit & cheese croquettes, and the halibut with beetroot and capers for appetizers- beautiful presentations (especially the halibut) and delicious. The wild mushroom bouillon and Langoustine bouillon soups were concentrated with flavors- enjoyable and refreshing! For mains we had the pan fried sea bass fillet with roasted garlic and shrimp, and the pan fried goose breast with roasted parsnips and potato mousseline-- both delicious and well executed. We finished with the 3 french cheese course and the scrumptious dark and white chocolate mousse "hemelse modder" dessert (highly recommended by a local museum guide and namesake of the restaurant). The wine pairing was also excellent and showcased the dishes in each course. For refined Dutch food in a relaxed setting- this restaurant is a gem! Worth the Euros for the food and ambiance.

After more than 30 years, I had dinner here again with former colleagues. Beautiful location right in the center of Amsterdam, diagonally opposite the special Scheepvaarthuis. Beautiful tables and chairs, pleasant decor. We had a nice corner. Service is adequate and friendly. We chose a five-course menu for €59, the portions (not very large) were beautifully presented and very tasty. We got a course with (French and Dutch) cheeses, but that was disappointing. Wafer-thin slices of three cheeses with equally thin slices of brown baguette. Tasty, but hard to swallow. I think French tourists were shaking their bellies with laughter after seeing this. They are used to cutting pieces of cheese from a platter themselves. By the way, the bread deserved better with butter beforehand, it tasted a bit old. For dessert, two of us had the iconic Heavenly Mud dessert with white and dark chocolate mousse. Remains unsurpassed. In the end, the total bill with tip was about €90 per person (beers, wine, coffee, 2 water bottles, extra fries plus the menus).

HM is always very nice to be and eat. You can put together a delicious vegetarian menu. They have a nice wine list and if you can't figure it out, help is at hand. Treat yourself to a delicious dessert too. Service is always friendly and personal.

We were walking around looking for a good recommendation and a good Google review, this place appeared and although a quiet place we wanted something nice and delicious for dinner... We were surprised! Delicious, good portions (normal) what the stomach needs. Order the tomato tartare!!! Delicious and fresh Great service, Sebastian is 10 and very patient. Average price per person €110, but it is worth it. 👌👌👌 Besides, they allowed us to prepare Carajillo without being on the menu 🇲🇽

Really good food and very good service. The food was beautifully presented and the serving staff did an excellent job of providing beautiful wines to accompany the food. I’d highly recommend a visit and do try the chocolate mousse !

This restaurant is a true gem in the heart of Amsterdam! It is now my go to restaurant in the city, near enough to the central train station, but on a uniquely quiet side street. It serves a sophisticated menu at incredibly reasonable prices for the quality of food, service, and atmosphere. I've been three times and would go back again tonight if I wasn't heading home.

I arrived with my whole family and there are 3 options: 3-course, 4-course, or 5-course menu. We opted for the 3-course menu, which allows you to choose 3 dishes from the menu but at different times, to start with the lamb soup, As a main course, cod with mashed hazelnuts and sauce, and as dessert, an orange pancake with orange ice cream and pralined Castilla walnuts. The soup was pure broth, the amount of meat it came with was somewhat sad, it was good but not something I would remember. The cod was delicious but had very little flavor, it tasted like a meal at my aunt's house, simple. And finally the dessert, the pancake was a bit dry, the ice cream did have a good texture and flavor, and the Castile walnut was what stood out the most, but the fact that the pancake, which is the main thing, ruined the experience a lot for me. And we ordered some potatoes for the center which were surprisingly the best, some simple fries, perfectly crunchy and salty, one of the best potatoes I have ever eaten and they tell me that it is also because of the quality of the potato itself. And we ordered a BROUWERIJ’TIJ beer, perfect to accompany the food, a strong Belgian beer with a small touch of orange. Paying €50 euros for 3 not wonderful times, I don't think it's worth it. I didn't eat badly, I would just say I ate, period. 6/10

Modern and creative food. Had three course menu. For each main course there was a vegetarian, fish and meat option. Very friendly and professional service, well balanced dishes.

Food was wonderful but we waited SO long in between each course - too long, and by the time we got to dessert we just wanted to leave. Service was friendly and professional but there was no pouring of the drinks for us. Spending over 2 hours in a restaurant for 3 courses with a non-cooked dessert is a bit too long.

This was the most expensive meal we had on our European vacation and IMO it was NOT worth it. The food a presented in a style like most French cuisine = Very "fancy" with small portions. I'm not a foodie, so this is all lost on me. It tasted fine, but wasn't great. The service was exceptionally slow on a Sunday night. We waited over a 1/2 hour to order another drink. So many great restaurants in Amsterdam that are much more affordable. I wouldn't go out of the way to go here.

The only thing better than the food and the location is the staff. Absolutely impeccable. My waiter was amazing and the food was unforgettable. I couldn’t have asked for anything more to make the experience better. I have fallen in love with this place!!! This place is 5 out of 5 stars!

Amazing food. The sea bass halibut tartare was delicious and the pan fried Atlantic hake fillet were delicious. For dessert, I took the hemelse Modder: a dark and white chocolate mousse with vanilla cream. It was nice, but I'd have prefer some vanilla icre cream instead of the cream. It would have made the whole dessert a little bit more "light"/refreshing. The dark mousse was perfect tho. Highly recommend.

Wonderful experience. They were extremely accommodating to my gluten free diet. Everything was absolutely delicious and freshly prepared.

Everything was just good! Delicious food, chic but not too much, very correct and attentive service. We had tartare of sea bass and halibut as a starter and main course duck breast with fennel sausage, hake fillet with pearl barley and samphire. White fish can sometimes be boring, but this certainly isn't. Colorful Desserts also faultless.

A local restaurant located on a deserted street, they have seasonal menus and chef's menus, the dishes are cooked very well, the wine is quite good at a cheap price. Very friendly service. The seating is a bit cramped, but it's cozy and the atmosphere is fun. I recommend that you come and dine at this restaurant.

Today, on my wife's birthday, I went to Hemelse Modder again, a restaurant I have been visiting for no less than 34 years. I have all three cookbooks and have cooked many dishes from them with great pleasure. The two main reasons that I have been coming there for so long are the excellent and original vegetarian dishes (I almost always order vegetarian even though I am not) and the friendly service. Today things went badly wrong on both fronts. The vegetarian starter (Tarte tatin of cherry tomato ect) was downright bland. It tasted like the collection of ingredients that were not badly prepared in themselves, but a dish is more than a collection of ingredients, especially in Heavenly Mud. The two vegetarian main courses (Tartelette with turnip cream, etc. and chickpea biscuit with parsnip cream, etc.) were mediocre to weak. The tartelette in particular had no taste and was not seasoned interestingly at all and the flavors did not interact at all (perhaps partly because of this). Neither dish has an aftertaste in the mouth or an interesting sensation while eating. The desserts were quite tasty. Now it may well be that the cook has an off-day and has left the herbs and spices at home, but when we (in the correct tone as I am used to, I always say when something is good but also when something is disappointing, with reasons) When I gave feedback (once after the starter, once after the main course and once at the end), I was insulted in such a ridiculous manner by the waiter (a different person from the one who served) that I will never return. It was announced to me in a fierce tone that I should have given feedback earlier (apparently even earlier than after the starter) because unfortunately there was nothing more they could do now. Like it's my fault. And I'm only going to say something after two bites if the dish is clearly failed or burnt, not if it is simply below par. The rest of his speech was also downright surreal and rude. It was just me, because the other customers were all very happy. No beginning of self-reflection, no cup of coffee for someone who is dissatisfied with reasons and has been coming to the restaurant for 34 years. It is not only painful but also very stupid. In my long career as a restaurant goer, I have never experienced anything so idiotic.

If you are looking for a restaurant with local food this is a very good option. I ordered the tarte tatin with tomatoes and it was very delicious, then hake and I also liked it a lot. The dessert is also good. The rest of my family ordered soup, the croquettes which must have been delicious, lamb and the venison were also exquisite. I definitely highly recommend it 👌🏻

There was only one waitress for the whole restaurant, and it’s a big place. Everything took forever, we spent most of the time waiting for the next course. And the food was okay but… meh

Good morning, Delicious ! I would start with that, because even if it is the essence of a restaurant, everything was particularly successful. No price per dish, everything works using a formula system: 3/5 or 7 dishes. Count on €49 for 3 dishes for example. Choose from your starter to the cheese your adventure with them. The welcome was very good, coat rack at the entrance and plenty of space inside. The only downside is a lot (too much) white in the decoration. Table/wall/frame/ceiling... It lacks enough customization to better appreciate the Hemelse Modder experience. Whether you're passing through or local, I recommend at least trying this place for that refined side. THANKS.

Best meal in Amsterdam this week. And not grossly expensive like some. Food was both interesting and delicious. What's not to love?

Recently enjoyed an old-fashioned delicious meal in Heavenly mud. Nowadays it is not easy to find good and friendly service in Amsterdam. Often you almost have to beg to be able to order something and you have to stick to a time slot/deposit. Not with heavenly mud where the food was truly heavenly! I'd love to visit again!

Hemelse Modder has rightly been one of the most popular restaurants among Amsterdam residents for 40 years. It is positive that the tasty dishes were served with potatoes and vegetables as side dishes, and not just boring fries and lettuce as in most restaurants in the Netherlands! Less pleasant was that (with the exception of the vegetarian croquettes) all other dishes from the menu (haddock stock, skre fillet, duck breast) arrived at our table lukewarm. The broth had excellent flavor, but the accompanying haddock fillet was quite different in size from the promotional photo published on the restaurant's Facebook page on January 11. With these restrictions, the food would have been too expensive.

It's located in a corner of a quiet residential area, making you wonder if there was a store in such a place. A restaurant that is popular with locals and serves a seasonal menu centered on local ingredients. Select several items from the prefix menu. The quantity is just right for a Japanese person. It's not cheap, but I don't think it's too expensive for this content.

Pleasant seating with friendly service. Food was quite ok, maybe a bit on the expensive side, but could be inflation and it was Christmas. In terms of furnishings, it was noticeable that the lights flickered a bit, which was somewhat at the expense of... realm. Would like to come back here again.

Just awesome! From the food to the wine pairing and service, everything was near perfect. In relation to the food, the salmon entree, the fennel soup and the chocolate mousse dessert were all unbelievably good. The wine also matched every meal perfectly, with the German blanc de noir a stand out. Finally the service is excellent. The staff are very knowledgeable and friendly to boot. This place is an easy five star rating.

I have been here twice and both the times my experience has been awesome. If you want to experience Dutch cuisine and some interesting dishes, I'd recommend this place for sure. It's best to reserve as walk-ins might be hard to accommodate. The ambience is just right.
