If there were more than five stars, I would choose a higher rating. We enjoyed an absolutely stunning meal! The service was exceptional, the outdoor space was perfect…and then there was the food. Every course was layered, thoughtful and absolutely delicious!

We had a wonderful dinner at Hemelse Modder today and loved everything — the food, the service and the atmosphere. I started with the three croquettes of kohlrabi, pea, dill and lime, served with creamy lime mayonnaise and mixed salad. I then had the lovely yellow bell pepper and orange soup with marinated celery and sour cream almond foam. For my main course, I chose the pan-fried Atlantic hake fillet with North Sea cockles, saffron cream sauce, grilled little gem lettuce, roasted potato and romanesco — the fish was beautifully cooked and absolutely delicious. I finished with their signature Hemelse Modder, dark and white chocolate mousse with vanilla cream, which was a perfect end to the meal. A special mention to the lovely gentleman who looked after us and recommended a wine for me that paired beautifully with the food. His warm, attentive service made the whole experience even more enjoyable. Delicious food, excellent service and a really lovely atmosphere — we would very happily come back and definitely recommend Hemelse Modder.

Great service and delicious food.

For me, this was a complete restaurant experience—from the food and service to the atmosphere and hospitality. It deserves 5 stars not only for the service but also for the genuine hospitality. Even though it's located in the city centre, it's still away from the main tourist crowds, so you get a much more local feeling. The food was excellent (compliments to the chef!), and the waiters were attentive throughout the whole evening. They were clearly well-trained but also knew how to make the experience feel personal. For example, the couple sitting next to us shared one dessert, and the staff brought them an extra scoop of ice cream so they could both enjoy it. Small gestures like that don't cost much, but they show that the staff really care about their guests. We had the three-course menu, and the portions were just right. Dinner lasted about 2.5 hours, which felt perfect for this type of restaurant. After that, we stayed for another two hours, enjoying drinks and conversation, and nobody made us feel like we had to leave—which, unfortunately, is something you often experience in Amsterdam. The interior is elegant without feeling too formal. It's a great place for a special occasion with your partner, but it's just as suitable for a relaxed dinner with friends. We'll definitely be back.

Best meal I’ve had in a long time. Wholeheartedly recommend!

We came in as a group of 3 and wanted to try authentic Dutch Cuisine. After this experience I have to say that the Dutch cuisine might not be for me. We were greeted by the waitress who offered to hang our coat in the coat room which was nice. After that once the entire party was seated we waited another 15 min for the menu to arrive, which is not a problem for us since we are just settling into the restaurant and the atmosphere is nice. We ordered multiple different things to try off the menu. The Tartlette has an interesting flavor and is very unique. I’d deem myself to have an adventurous and broad pallete however this is not it. The qual fillet starter was very dry and meat was tough to chew. The seafood soup as a second course as well as the duck fillet as main was super super salty as if the salt shaker is broken in the kitchen. I revisited the menu as now I am home and see that the duck is supposed to pair with a peppercorn gravy, but I did not taste any peppercorn it was just a very salty dark sauce. To end the night we had to use the washroom and it was filthy. For a restaurant like this management needs to take on leadership to ensure cleanliness and quality and taste of the food. Here I only tasted the lack there of.

Delicious dishes, really things you wouldn't easily make yourself. That's why you go out to eat, after all. The atmosphere is nice and the service is very sweet and quick!

It is a restaurant with typical Dutch cuisine but it is expensive. The service is very helpful and friendly. It is quite central and the place is cozy.

An excellent experience all the way around for fine Dutch Cuisine. Great service and presentation. You may create a 3, 4 , or 5 course dinner with a variety of ecclectic selections. Well done. My Lamb chop entree was perfect, sea food soup and quail breast stuffed with pate was a perfect dish. Deserts outstanding. You wont go wrong. Clean and comfortable.

An unforgettable dining experience from start to finish. The wine list is extensive, with something for every taste, and the location is simply beautiful. The quail starter was outstanding, easily the best starter I’ve had in the Netherlands. For the mains, we had the lamb rack and the duck, both cooked to perfection, beautifully plated, and packed with incredible flavours. We finished with the famous Hemelse Modder pudding, which absolutely lived up to its reputation. Combined with warm, attentive service, this was a well deserved 5-star experience.

We went to Hemelse Modder because it was close to our hotel and I saw great ratings, and the food exceeded our expectations! A wonderful find featuring seasonal items and creative flavors! Wines by the glass were nice choices and some unique finds. I loved my entree of fish in a saffron cream sauce, incredible. We shared the white and dark chocolate mousse dessert, along with a fruit tart. Staff were welcoming and attentive- I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Hemelse Modder!

I went twice in less than a year and let me tell you; this is the place to go on a Monday. Really anytime but most other places of this caliber are closed Mondays and we had the restaurant to ourselves after about an hour. Just incredible seasonal food, the wines are amazing but the service and space are what make this place special. You feel like a close friend as soon as you sit down in their cozy and refined space. Also a perfect little bench facing the canal outside for the smokers amongst us. 10/10 bench. I’ve now had everything from lamb chops, homemade pate and vegetarian croquettes to wild duck and insane cheeses and can say every bite has been truly remarkable. Not to overshare but my first time here was after a deeply tragic funeral for a dear loved one and that meal helped me smile after one of the worst days of my life. Please go, support them, enjoy and tip well! I grew up in the city and am overjoyed places like this still exist.

Had dinner with my father (73). We had a lovely evening together. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. We sat outside on the back terrace. The service was very friendly and service-oriented. A nice crowd, so definitely recommended.

Fabulous food! Friendly staff. We all had the 3 course seasonal chef’s choice menu, only one had a glass of wine. I would recommend the 4 or 5 course chefs menu. Well worth the price for a special dinner that is exquisitely prepared, that looks as good as it tastes, that is unhurried, and will be remembered long after the meal.

A charming welcome and a lovely, warm atmosphere embraced us before a wonderful meal of several courses from a couple of substantial, seasonal fixed-price menus. The subtle flavours were beautifully combined. I loved the citrus sauce with the perfect hake and the balanced rhubarb dessert, which ended the meal wonderfully. Careful portions meant that we were satisfied but not overwhelmed by a three- or four-course selection. Accompanying wines completed the evening, well spent in the company of attentive service.

Yummy asparagus centered spring menu.

My wife booked this ahead of our trip after reading about the chef's menu that featured asparagus in every course. We arrived ahead of our reservation and were seated immediately. Our server delivered menus and gave us a few minutes to form a plan on courses and to decide on wine pairing. We each chose a different starter and dessert and shared the same 2 intermediate courses. Every course and wine pairing was perfect. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Noise level was minimal and conversation was easy. I particularly enjoyed my duck ragout starter dish and the scallops were a close second. The asparagus did not disappoint either.

The food was excellent - so fresh and at the peak of season. The staff was attentive and had great suggestions. I felt well taken care of.

Went to eat here again after all. It was quite disappointing for the third time. Fortunately, there are plenty of other options in Amsterdam.

We came to this restaurant because of its high ratings, but in the end we were not impressed, we didn’t really enjoy Dutch cuisine. Initially, we just wanted to try something local and have a light dinner while feeding our two-year-old daughter (normally she adores restaurant food!). However, when placing the order, we were informed that we had to order TWO full menus since there were two adults at the table. This was not mentioned in advance - not upon arrival, not when the menus were given, not on the menu. And one menu, for the record, consists of AT LEAST three courses per person. We were not prepared for this, but had to place an order - by that time our daughter got really hungry. As a result, we ate very little and asked to pack the rest to go, simply because we weren’t that hungry. The bill came to around €120, and in the end, we didn’t really have the dining experience we expected, didn’t enjoy the atmosphere, and couldn’t properly feed our child - the food was quite complex, and she refused to eat it. There are also concerns about the service: we waited over 20 minutes just to receive the menu, it took a looong time for someone to take our order, and there was no high chair available for our child. If we had received the menu earlier, rather than after 20+ minutes, we probably would have left - as there was nothing suitable for kids. The restaurant is definitely not kid- friendly but what pissed me off most - is that we actually were forced to order an extra menu we didn't want. Additionally, the restroom was in a dirty condition, which is absolutely unacceptable for a place that presents itself as a high-end restaurant. Overall: a highly rated place, but our experience was no better than a 3–4 out of 10.

I’m a little torn writing this review. First of all, the food was excellent. We loved all of the dishes that we ate (we ordered off the à la carte menu). Everything was cooked perfectly, with bold and interesting flavors. It was clear that the dishes were created with a lot of thought and care. However, all of that was overshadowed by the service. We ate four courses total, but we spent around four hours in the restaurant. I am not usually one to complain about a slow meal; taking two or even three hours to eat is not unusual for me and my family and can be very enjoyable, when done right. This experience was different. The first course and the soup course came out within reasonable time frames. Then, the main dishes took forever, and the final course additionally took forever after that. It felt as if something had gone awry in the kitchen, because we noticed that most tables in the restaurant were also waiting long times for their food. The meal was so slow that by the time we finally left the restaurant, while we weren’t hungry, we certainly weren’t full. Another disappointment—that would perhaps be more forgivable with better service—was that the wine pairings were not great. The pairings were almost all white wines, and they used the same bottle of white wine across three different courses. It just felt slightly lazy: my guinea fowl was paired with the same white wine as was paired with the croquettes, even though it could have easily been paired with a light red. One of our party had lamb, and they paired it with a light red (which was actually very nice with the guinea fowl) when it could have easily taken a medium- or full-bodied red. All of this is to say that we expected a higher level of thought in the wine pairings for this kind of restaurant. My final thought is this: we expected far more from this restaurant, and left disappointed with our experience.

We were looking for a special place for my husband's birthday, and somehow we managed to find a table without a reservation. We were greeted kindly and politely. Exceptional, high-quality food. The portions may seem small, but at least we left feeling full and satisfied... Compliments to the chefs and the super-friendly waiters.

Hemelse Modder was the place that started my appreciation for Amsterdam's culinary scene. After more than 15 years it was great being back. Hemelse Modder: the Grand Lady who never lost her sparkle and flair!

Terrible service. Going out to eat is more than just the food. It is the atmosphere, the service, the ambiance. Unfortunately, only the food met the minimum expectations. 'May I have a Pinot Noir?' was answered with a blunt 'No', followed by the handing over of the drinks menu. Two of the three vegans were served duck pâté. Apologies followed, but no compensation was forthcoming. The third vegan was then served venison. Here, too, only verbal apologies followed. Hemelse modder claims to be a luxury restaurant with high-quality food. Good service should be an integral part of that, but it turned out to be completely lacking.

Food was good and different. The vegan and vegetarian options we chose were just as good as fish and meat. The service took forever. 2h30 to complete the meal. There was a big group at the restaurant that probably impacted the service time.

I had a wonderful evening at De Hemelse Modder! It was a bit of a struggle to choose, as the menu offered delicious meat, fish, and vegetarian options. This time I chose the pan-fried cod with beurre blanc, fennel, and mashed potatoes, perfectly prepared and served. For my starter, I had the burrata with roasted tomatoes, basil oil, and crispy bread—so delicious! To finish, I had the Hemelse modder (always a favorite 😋). This is best restaurant I have ever experienced with fast services and delicious foods 😋.

Food is... ok-is. Eatable but really nothing special. And definitively overpriced. I got a very salty soup, a kind of savoury cake (small) with a few drops of sauce, and two tiny pieces of cheese. Quite sad to see. Extremely long waiting times between dishes. How much they asked for all that? 55 euros. Drinks excluded, of course.

I don't know what the restaurant is like; I've never been there myself. But after what I experienced, I'll never go there again. The reason is that I contacted them via WhatsApp. And my experience was unfortunately very negative. I was asked to give a five-star review in exchange for money. If a restaurant is so eager to push and manipulate people with money to give a five-star rating, I think to myself, a good company wouldn't need this. But hey, you know what I mean.

The restaurant is located just outside the red light district. The place is quite large, with friendly staff. We ate well; the herring tartare was very good, as was the meat. The prices are slightly higher than average; for two, we paid €170 for a four-course menu.

Como dice el titulo: nada del otro mundo Se come mal? No. Se come " normal". Optamos por el menu de 71 euros y eso da para cuatro platos.. muy normalitos. Por ese dinero creo que puedes comer mejor en otros restaurantes. En nuestro caso fueron 3 pescados y 1 postre: nada de carne.
