Amsterdam has so much amazing international food, that we never considered Dutch d Food. Thank god on our last meal we tried this place. It was great, probably the best escargots we have ever had, great ribs and venison. Skip the mussels. Service was great and atmosphere too.

Outstanding, authentic, Dutch fayre in a homely atmosphere. Great value for money, served by wonderful people. Grandma's beef was out of this world.

I tried a traditional dish, "Stamppot," a meatball with mashed potatoes and vegetables... it was tasty (nothing extraordinary). The service was very friendly. The only thing I would add is that they should provide complimentary tap water.

We had a wonderful time at this restaurant. The setting is very pleasant, and the unique decor creates a warm atmosphere. The servers were very kind and understanding, even with our poor French accent when trying to communicate in English. We ate very well; it was delicious. The dishes were generous and the portions were good, perfect for big appetites. The prices are reasonable for Amsterdam, and the quality is excellent. A nice bonus is the online booking option, which is sometimes easier when you don't speak the local language. I highly recommend it!

Absolutely lovely place! If you’re looking for well-priced, delicious Dutch dishes, this is the place to go! We were in a rush and asked that our food come fast and it came very quickly. The waiters were also very kind and recommended great dishes. We wanted to try something Dutch so we had the eel, shrimp and pea soup. 10/10 flavour! Just overall friendly staff and good food!

The food was divine. We started with onion soup and vegetable soup, both delicious. Then I ordered the marinated ribs, which come with fries and salad. It's a generous portion and absolutely fantastic. My girlfriend ordered a beef stew with mashed potatoes and vegetables, which was also delicious, but I still prefer the ribs. Reservations are recommended because it's always packed.

This restaurant serves traditional Dutch cuisine, which I discovered on a local's recommendation while on a business trip to the Netherlands. The space is small, but the food was excellent. I chose escargot as an appetizer and beef stew as a main, both of which were excellent. The server was friendly, and it was a satisfying dinner experience.

A really lovely little restaurant with a local, traditional atmosphere and rugs on the tables! The dishes are homemade, delicious, and generous, and the service is excellent and friendly! We were there with a little one, as they don't have high chairs, and given the size and activity of the place, it's difficult to let the child wander around. We had a wonderful time; I think we even left a little Sally car there! We'll definitely be back, and certainly not hoping to find the car! Remember to book ahead!!

The soups didn’t taste fresh but the rest was alright

Came with my boyfriend on Christmas Day, and the food was genuinely the best I’ve ever tasted in my life. The staff were so welcoming and despite our not having a reservation made every effort to get us seated. We had steak which couldn’t have been better- and the staff made the experience even better. Thank you for being so attentive and friendly. 10/10 - we will be back. Love from Ireland.

Flavorless, reheated slop that had clearly been dragged from tins and packets with zero care, zero skill, and zero shame. Vegetables were raw. Portions were obscenely oversized and grotesque, this is not generosity, but a desperate attempt to overwhelm you with quantity so you don't immediately notice you've paid good money for what tastes like catering waste. It didn't work. And then there's the creepy owner. (Or at least who I assume to be the owner) he reminded me of Pop from League of Gentlemen. Watching him pick his teeth while walking through the dining room was the perfect appetizer for what followed: passive-aggressive badgering and guilt tripping for tips. Why would I tip you for something so disgusting? If you want tips, teach your chef to cook and learn some manners! This food should have been binned, not billed. The sheer audacity of standing there with your hand out after serving this garbage is especially deceptive. This place operates with the confidence of somewhere that knows its customers are tourists who won't be back to warn anyone. Well, here's your warning: this is a trap. The kind of establishment that makes you question whether the owner actively despises his guests or simply doesn't register them as human beings. An absolute disgrace. Comfort food at it’s best. Lots of veggies, good food, Dutch classics in a Dutch classic atmosphere. We will be back!

If you want the best, make this reservation. Beef stew, trout, smoked eel, peas soup… + and each was mind blowing good. Freshness, quality, generous portions, attentive staff and very comfortable dining area. Beer and wine selection top notch. A huge thank you to the owner for making room for us on a very busy night.

We experienced rude staff. We did not had a reservation yet the place was almost empty. They gave us a table for 4 when we were 6 persons and asked us to glue ousevleves. I do not recommend this place. We left without eating here.

Judging by the comments, this is the most controversial restaurant we've ever been to. 😂 We actually found it quite pleasant here; yes, the carpets on the tables are a bit funny, but they weren't that out of place. The food was good and the service very attentive.

Excellent experience at Restaurant 't Zwaantje. The restaurant was already full at our desired time, so we waited for the 9:30 pm seating. The wait was well worth it. The setting is very pleasant, warm, and authentic. The staff is extremely friendly, attentive, and relaxed, which immediately puts you at ease. As for the food, everything was outstanding. We ordered onion soup, a mushroom toast appetizer, followed by salmon and ribs. Impeccable quality, perfectly cooked, and expertly balanced flavors. The portions are very generous. As someone with a big appetite, I can confirm that you leave feeling satisfied, without any frustration. Special mention for the value for money. The prices are very reasonable, especially compared to Amsterdam standards, and clearly lower than many other restaurants for a much higher quality experience. In conclusion: A reliable and friendly restaurant with truly generous and honest cuisine. Highly recommended.

Terrible restaurant, terrible food. The place is dirty, the tablecloth looks filthy, but I can tolerate customs different from mine, but the food is impossible to ignore. A meat dish arrived completely burned, hidden by the sauce. They thought we wouldn't notice, but it was inedible. When we pointed it out, they merely apologized to the chef. The lamb, on the other hand, was completely raw. An experience not to be repeated...

The atmosphere was already great, even though we had to eat very early for an evening performance. The restaurant was already full at 5 p.m. The service was friendly, welcoming, and relaxed. Nice music played in the background. The food was good, tasty, and above all, the prices were almost un-Amsterdam-style. In short, highly recommended!

Great tasting food with tender meat, excellent service from the staff, downside was the "old building" smell that allmost overpowered everything else.

My boyfriend and I went there last night to celebrate his birthday. Everyone was very kind, and the waiter (I think he was also the owner) took advantage of the opportunity while my boyfriend was in the bathroom to come over and ask if I wanted anything special for the evening. They brought out the cake with candles. It was much appreciated.

We had a very pleasant evening at the 't Zwaantje restaurant in Amsterdam. The establishment exudes authentic charm thanks to its antique and typical decor, which immediately creates a welcoming atmosphere. As for the food, everything was excellent. Special mention goes to the fish stew, perfectly prepared, accompanied by delicious homemade mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables. The sautéed mussels were also tasty. Our only slight reservation was the fries, which were a little below the standard of the rest of the meal, but nothing that detracted from the overall experience. The welcome was professional and warm, and the service was quick and attentive. The owner, who speaks a few words of French, makes a real effort to ensure everyone feels comfortable. You truly feel valued, which makes you want to return. Finally, the wines by the glass are both affordable and of good quality, which is a definite plus. In short, a wonderful discovery in Amsterdam: an authentic restaurant, generous portions, and attentive service. We highly recommend it!

can’t stop thinking about that grandmas beef stew since i went on saturday night… genuinely one of the best meals i have had in europe and i have been here for 3 months. SO good if you go GET THAT. also SUCH. good vibe and the waiters were so sweet.

Best spot for local cuisine! Great portions for the price, and have had consistent, kind service both times I’ve been. Also has such a cozy, warm interior which makes for a great atmosphere. Very friendly staff who go above and beyond! The apple pie was understandably the best dessert, especially when paired with cinnamon ice cream and whipped cream.

The restaraunt and staff were all great but we made a reservation at 8 and didnt get seated till 8.30. Not ideal, especially as you go to the trouble of making a reservation. If we were in a rush we would have had a problem.

I wanted to eat Dutch food while traveling, so I went to this restaurant because it had appeared in many blogs and videos. The food was delicious, but I saw something that shouldn't have happened, so although I don't usually write reviews, I'm writing this to raise awareness. What happened: One of the servers poured another customer's half-finished beer into a separate glass and brought it to my table. I made a reservation at 7:30 PM, but the previous customer kept me waiting for nearly 20 minutes because they weren't leaving. I was also seated at the bar, which only had one seat, despite my reservation. (I don't really mind this, though.) When I sat down, there was a glass of beer in front of me. Since I was sitting at the bar counter, I assumed someone would take it, but it remained there for a while. When the bartender took my order, I told her it wasn't mine, and she said she thought I had ordered it. By that time, most of the foam had evaporated, leaving a space at the top of the glass. Suddenly, one of the male staff members came into the bar, grabbed glass (A), and went to the other side of the bar. There was another glass (B) there, about half full. The waiter poured the beer from glass (B) into glass (A), placed glass (B) in the sink, left the bar, and carried beer (A) to a customer at a table. To be honest, I didn't really understand what was going on at the time, but something felt strange, so I observed various things while eating my meal. Then I realized that beer (B) was in the same place where they bring out glasses after customers have left, which meant that beer (B) was someone's half-finished beer. At that moment, the food, which should have been delicious, became completely unappealing, and I decided not to order dessert after my meal, paid the bill, and left the restaurant. I really regretted not realizing the situation immediately and not being able to stop the beer. Looking back, the waiter's behavior was a little strange, so it may be a personal problem, but if this was "normal" for a restaurant, and if some of the food I ate was someone else's leftovers, I would feel sick and would not recommend the restaurant to others, no matter how famous and popular it is. This is just something that happened when I was there, so I don't know if it's an everyday occurrence, but since this is a restaurant that many Japanese people who visit the Netherlands will see at least once, I thought I'd write about it just in case. It's such a shame, as Amsterdam, the Netherlands, is a nice place.

Fully recommend the ribs and Grandmas Beef Stew - the meat will melt in your mouth . Seemed to be very popular too( recommend booking in advance but we managed to go without one )! Overall would defo go again!!

A very fun vibe with great service and some really delicious food. I’m not sure what else you could ask. The portions were large and everything we had was very tasty. The apple pie was especially good. It’s a small place so you should book. And you should.

Ate here twice on a recent trip to Amsterdam. Dinner for two people and also dinner for four. Atmosphere is great, quite cozy. Food was hearty. I particularly liked the stew. Service was friendly and attentive.

Came in alone but got a seat for an hour. The place is obviously popular as people came pouring in even on a fairly early Monday evening. Old school Dutch place. The staff was really efficient and let’s say used to handling tourists of all sorts. Had Grandma’s stew, which was really good. The meat was fall apart tender, the gravy thick and tasty and all the various vegetables were well cooked. A bit weird for me to get apple sauce with it, but it worked pretty well. Recommend for a traditional Dutch meal.

This restaurant is saved by its warm atmosphere and its welcoming and efficient servers. As for the food, I've never eaten anything so undercooked. Defrost frozen vegetables and mashed potatoes and don't season them, and you'll get the same meal.

I've done maybe 500 hundred restaurants in the course of my life, ranging from really cheap to gourmet. This one officially ranks as the worst I've ever tried. If you're accustomed to food cooked with either butter, salt or spice, stay away from this place. The vegetables had no taste and were boiled. Purée was bland. They give you a nice garlic butter as an appetizer, you'd think they would have had some left to put in there. I wanted to try some "local" cuisine and so I went for the beef stew. There was nothing typical in there and the meat was very dry. Unironically, I've had better ones from the microwaves. On another note, though the plates came in after 45min, the staff was nice enough to give us a seat when we had no reservation and they were friendly. Good atmosphere as well. To summarize, if you've been used to your standard - insert country - restaurant, you'll be happier, probably anywhere else. Even more so for that price range.

They were cordial to us while we waited 20 minutes past our reserved time. Downhill from there. After 40 minutes more, and the second time we asked for our salads, the response was “I only have two hands” ( we never got the salads). Forgetful schnitzel, leftover mashed potatoes, mushy bland vegetables, dried cordon bleu, maybe the salad would have been decent. 15 minutes waiting after 3 requests for the check, we had to take it ourselves to the bar anyway. Couldn’t wait to get out of there.

We were very lucky to get a table without booking on a Saturday evening. The owner very kindly squeezed is in after a five minute wait. The atmosphere was great, many people there were on repeat visits. The couple who'd just left our table had been back four times in a week and I can understand why. I tried the Grandma's beef stew and it was absolutely delicious.

What an amazing restaurant to try traditional Dutch food! Our table wasn’t ready at the time of our reservation because the place was very busy, but the staff was so nice and attentive that we didn’t really care (it was only a 15-minute wait). We started with a delicious pea soup, creamy and warm. I also wanted something typically Dutch and went for Grandma’s Beef Stew -it didn’t disappoint. The beef was so tender it melted in my mouth, the vegetables were fresh and tasty, and the cabbage salad had a great seasoning that stood out. For dessert, I had a refreshing pudding, the perfect way to end the meal. The atmosphere is cozy, the staff is super friendly, and the whole experience makes you feel like you’re eating at your grandma’s place. Totally recommend this restaurant!

We visited this restaurant in July 2025 and had the best experience. We walked by earlier in the day and they squeezed us in for a reservation. The waiters and owner were very friendly, conversational and gave good travel tips. The rugs create a unique vibe and decor that was memorable. The traditional dutch food was exceptional and plenty of wines to choose from. We ordered a lot of food, and the only thing I wouldn't recommend is the lobster bisque. They gave us a dessert with a shot that was the cherry on top of our experience. We absolutely would go back and hope we do someday!

We only asked to keep the food in the middle to keep my handsy 2 year old from touching it.

We had high hopes for this restaurant as reviews were quite good. We wanted to try some authentic Dutch food. In particular, we wanted to expose our young kids to Dutch cuisine. We are a party of 5 with three adults and two kids under 5. We had made a reservation ahead of time. In total, we ordered 4 drinks, 2 appetizers and 3 entrees from their specialty menu. When the entrees arrived, we asked them to place the plate in the middle. Immediately, the waiter replied, "we are not a sharing restaurant, we do not provide sharing plates". We did not ask for sharing plates but did intend to share the dishes as we wanted to get a good taste of a few things on offer. It made us feel quite uncomfortable. Through our dining experience, the same waiter made other uncomfortable comments. We are not sure if he was upset we did not order 5 entrees for the table of 5 or perhaps he did not appreciate young kids or perhaps he didn't want to serve Asian people? At the time of settling the bill, the waiter said that they prefer cash but will accept card. They also mentioned that service was not included in the bill. Overall, food is reasonable. Beware, it is definitely not a family friendly restaurant.

The best place to have dinner in 6 days in Amsterdam. Delicious, lots of it, filling. Good atmosphere and friendly staff. We will definitely come here again next time we come to Amsterdam. It is better to book a table in advance, but if you stumbled upon it like we did, you can wait 10-20 minutes and they will seat you.
