Restaurant 't Zwaantje in Grachtengordel-West

Came in alone but got a seat for an hour. The place is obviously popular as people came pouring in even on a fairly early Monday evening. Old school Dutch place. The staff was really efficient and let’s say used to handling tourists of all sorts. Had Grandma’s stew, which was really good. The meat was fall apart tender, the gravy thick and tasty and all the various vegetables were well cooked. A bit weird for me to get apple sauce with it, but it worked pretty well. Recommend for a traditional Dutch meal.

This restaurant is saved by its warm atmosphere and its welcoming and efficient servers. As for the food, I've never eaten anything so undercooked. Defrost frozen vegetables and mashed potatoes and don't season them, and you'll get the same meal.

They were cordial to us while we waited 20 minutes past our reserved time. Downhill from there. After 40 minutes more, and the second time we asked for our salads, the response was “I only have two hands” ( we never got the salads). Forgetful schnitzel, leftover mashed potatoes, mushy bland vegetables, dried cordon bleu, maybe the salad would have been decent. 15 minutes waiting after 3 requests for the check, we had to take it ourselves to the bar anyway. Couldn’t wait to get out of there.

Reservations required! We had the specials: traditional Dutch food. It was plentiful and delicious. Unfortunately, we couldn't fit in dessert; we were stuffed! Service was super friendly, quick, and efficient! The "Keks" with espresso is worth a visit alone!

This place is fantastic!! If you’re in Amsterdam is a must! The staff is super nice, the food is incredibly good and you leave the place feeling happy for having a fantastic meal with an outstanding customer service!!

We were very lucky to get a table without booking on a Saturday evening. The owner very kindly squeezed is in after a five minute wait. The atmosphere was great, many people there were on repeat visits. The couple who'd just left our table had been back four times in a week and I can understand why. I tried the Grandma's beef stew and it was absolutely delicious.

What an amazing restaurant to try traditional Dutch food! Our table wasn’t ready at the time of our reservation because the place was very busy, but the staff was so nice and attentive that we didn’t really care (it was only a 15-minute wait). We started with a delicious pea soup, creamy and warm. I also wanted something typically Dutch and went for Grandma’s Beef Stew -it didn’t disappoint. The beef was so tender it melted in my mouth, the vegetables were fresh and tasty, and the cabbage salad had a great seasoning that stood out. For dessert, I had a refreshing pudding, the perfect way to end the meal. The atmosphere is cozy, the staff is super friendly, and the whole experience makes you feel like you’re eating at your grandma’s place. Totally recommend this restaurant!

We visited this restaurant in July 2025 and had the best experience. We walked by earlier in the day and they squeezed us in for a reservation. The waiters and owner were very friendly, conversational and gave good travel tips. The rugs create a unique vibe and decor that was memorable. The traditional dutch food was exceptional and plenty of wines to choose from. We ordered a lot of food, and the only thing I wouldn't recommend is the lobster bisque. They gave us a dessert with a shot that was the cherry on top of our experience. We absolutely would go back and hope we do someday!

Great experience! The ribs with BBQ sauce were excellent and plentiful! The staff were friendly and helpful! And the traditional Dutch stamppot with homemade meatballs was also very good!

Loved it- excellent food, really quaint interior and very friendly staff members. I wanted to try something traditional and Grandma’s simmering meat with mashed potatoes, vegetables and homemade apple puree exceeded my expectations. Beef was very tender, melting in my mouth and it was accompanied by a huge plate of vegetables. The portion was huge but you cannot stop eating - it is soo good . I would definitely come back for more

Food was good. Atmosphere is great. It was cozy. Service was hit and miss. One server we had was friendly. Another one was very direct to the point it was rude. Not a great choice for a family with children under 5. The unfriendly server told us this is not a sharing restaurant and they do not provide sharing plates. We never even asked for sharing plates. We only asked to keep the food in the middle to keep my handsy 2 year old from touching it.

We had high hopes for this restaurant as reviews were quite good. We wanted to try some authentic Dutch food. In particular, we wanted to expose our young kids to Dutch cuisine. We are a party of 5 with three adults and two kids under 5. We had made a reservation ahead of time. In total, we ordered 4 drinks, 2 appetizers and 3 entrees from their specialty menu. When the entrees arrived, we asked them to place the plate in the middle. Immediately, the waiter replied, "we are not a sharing restaurant, we do not provide sharing plates". We did not ask for sharing plates but did intend to share the dishes as we wanted to get a good taste of a few things on offer. It made us feel quite uncomfortable. Through our dining experience, the same waiter made other uncomfortable comments. We are not sure if he was upset we did not order 5 entrees for the table of 5 or perhaps he did not appreciate young kids or perhaps he didn't want to serve Asian people? At the time of settling the bill, the waiter said that they prefer cash but will accept card. They also mentioned that service was not included in the bill. Overall, food is reasonable. Beware, it is definitely not a family friendly restaurant.

The perfect place for some authentic Dutch food. Excellent service, we had a little misunderstanding but this was quickly and kindly solved by the staff. That was even more than we would have expected. Thank you guys I will be back in the next days!

We didn't have a reservation, but we were lucky enough to be able to eat at this restaurant! We waited a few minutes. A wonderful dining experience! We had ribs. They were excellent, and the beer was very good! The service was fast, and the servers were pleasant and eager to make sure everything was okay.

The best place to have dinner in 6 days in Amsterdam. Delicious, lots of it, filling. Good atmosphere and friendly staff. We will definitely come here again next time we come to Amsterdam. It is better to book a table in advance, but if you stumbled upon it like we did, you can wait 10-20 minutes and they will seat you.

A very nice, quaint restaurant in a central location, definitely worth a visit! We had Grandma's roast beef, which was delicious and plentiful. The staff was also extremely friendly and accommodating. A reservation is a must, though – we were able to make one in the morning, but by the evening it was full, and guests without a reservation were turned away. Cash (preferred) and card payments (at the counter) are accepted.

The restaurant has a truly old-fashioned Dutch décor, which creates a sense of tranquility. The staff is incredibly friendly, something I've never experienced before. The food is delicious; I had Grandma's braised meat (delicious), and my aunt had the lamb chops, also delicious. Thank you so much for your hospitality, and perhaps we'll see you again soon; we certainly enjoyed it.

A great discovery. Our first trip to Amsterdam. We were wandering around looking for a good, friendly, and affordable restaurant, and we fell in love with this vintage-style restaurant. The manager and his waiters were very pleasant, and we even got to speak a few words of French. The ribs are excellent; I recommend them and would definitely come back.

Aunque ya estábamos bastante llenos, no pudimos resistirnos a compartir una rebanada de tarta de manzana excepcional con helado y crema batida de postre. Por mucho, esta fue la mejor cena de todo nuestro viaje. Recomiendo de todo corazón el restaurante, por la comida, el ambiente y, sobre todo, la gente maravillosa que trabaja allí.

We had an absolutely fantastic dinner at Restaurant ’t Zwaantje! The atmosphere was warm, traditional, and full of character..just like the food. Gabriel gave us perfect recommendations and made the night even more memorable with his helpful, friendly, and funny attitude. The traditional Dutch dishes were delicious, and the ribs were truly out of this world. This is a popular spot for a reason…definitely book ahead. A highlight of our Amsterdam trip!

It was really delicious. The soup everyone recommended was the best. I was told that I could eat Dutch local cuisine, and I was satisfied with everything. The sirloin steak was not cooked to the best, but I would recommend it to tourists.

We asked the concierge at our hotel for a recommendation for an authentic Dutch restaurant. The concierge sent us across town to Zwaantje and we couldn't have been happier. The restaurant was non stop busy on a Wednesday. Service was incredible, staff were engaging, and the food was outstanding. Highly recommended!

I made a reservation by chance (so many restaurants in Amsterdam that it's difficult to choose). The restaurant is on a quiet side street, the dining room is on a moderate scale (about fifteen tables), and the atmosphere is warm. Very warm welcome and service, and the prices are reasonable for a large tourist city. The chicken and beef stew, grandma's style, were very generous. For two starters, two main courses, and two glasses of wine, 67 euros.

The ribs were good and abundant. The wine was delicious. The Belgian waffle with vanilla ice cream, whipped topping, and hot Belgian chocolate was delicious. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was inviting. Yum!

Wanted to try Dutch food. Found this restaurant on Google and it was good. Took 20 minutes to get here. Simple service. Not much enthusiasm or polite words. Asked for wine but waiter didn't bring it. When ordering, I asked for two glasses of ordinary ice water and was charged about 6 euros.

This place is truly the best - the service is bang on from everyone, the food really is 10/10; a lot of attention to detail, and there are all the serviettes you could want splayed out in a jug on your table. It's also really good value for money. I can't fault it - it's probably top 5 best meals i've had, worldwide, ever.

Nice little restaurant in Amsterdam with very friendly staff and very good food

We loved the mushroom starter. The pea soup is quite different from what we've had at other restaurants. The vegetable stew wasn't bad. The dessert is too dense. I would recommend it if you want to share and try it. I don't think the online menu price includes VAT, as the total doesn't match. Cash is accepted.

A really excellent experience. The staff are friendly and attentive, and the food is great value and delicious. It feels like a truly authentic old school vibe establishment, and is a little gem tucked away in Amsterdam. Me and me friends arrived without a reservation, however the staff allowed us to dine prior to a forthcoming groups reservation. It is evidently best to reserve a table as it is certainly a popular place as it only got busier and busier throughout our time there. Absolutely would recommend to anyone in Amsterdam

Genuinely have nothing bad to say about this place. We had the more traditional dishes and they were incredible. The service was brilliant and the value for money was top tier. One of the best restaurants I have ever been to!

Great team of competent and courteous young men out front with mom in the kitchen and dad behind the bar. Tavern-like atmosphere, terrific bistro fare. The Cordon-bleu is excellent (as was the calf's liver - I know it's not everyone's taste but I loved it) and great menu selections. Very reasonably priced and attentive service and quite a nice wine selection - we went for the bottle of the 'house' cabernet and it was excellent. Highly recommend.

This was not a pleasant experience. Our server was quite rude, he did not respond to our questions about the menu. The food arrived different from what was ordered, Were given small bowls of food, including what we did not order and told to share between the six of us. Upon payment I was aggressively pushed to include a tip that was certainly not justified. We will not return!

The first thing we experienced when we walked into Restaurant 't Zwaantje was the feeling of coming to a friend’s pub. The staff were super friendly and inviting. And wow! The food! We started with the snails. They were perfectly prepared and presented. For mains we had skewer of pork tenderloin with peanut sauce, French fries and salad, and the stamppot with a meatball. We opted for house red wine. The food was fantastic. If I had to make a complaint, it was not about the restaurant at all. We were next to an American family of four who spouted politics loudly (especially the father) for their entire meal. Luckily next to us was a large family gathering to celebrate a matriarch’s birthday. They were jubilant which went much more along with the enjoyable vibe we were going for! When I went up to pay the first question I was asked was “did you enjoy yourselves”? I appreciated that very much. My answer was yes. Next time we’re in Amsterdam, we’ll eat there again.

One of the best places we found in Amsterdam. Starting from the welcome and the attention to the customer, up to the infinite goodness of the dishes. We had a classic dish and lamb chops: in addition to the perfect cooking, the accompanying sauce was literally fabulous. Absolutely to try!

A Hidden Gem in Amsterdam We arrived on a Sunday night, just after 9:30, when there were almost no places left. Without a reservation and with low expectations, we were greeted with a smile. And what a pleasant surprise we had! We ordered two soups, snails with garlic and butter, mussels, and a cut of steak. Everything was delicious: well-crafted flavors, generous portions, and perfectly paired with beers. The atmosphere is cozy, intimate, and has that charm that makes you want to stay a little longer. But what really stands out is the service. Definitely a place we would return to. Ideal for a leisurely dinner in good company.

Disappointed because this restaurant does not accept children, we lost our table because we were 15 minutes late and the fries were very average (we were in Brussels at lunchtime!)

Waiters are unpleasant and not welcoming. If you arrive 15min late they will give away your table. You’ll pay for frozen fries, frozen fish. Be careful if you ask for bread they won’t tell you that it’s extra charges… SURPRISE on the bill you have to pay for it and such a salty price for a disgusting frozen bread. The meat was not good either. Disappointed by the place and the people. If I were you I would walk away. Btw you eat on rugs … not tablecloths. Don’t they teach you hygiene rules at school ?
