I had a croquette sandwich; it looked super tasty and tasted delicious too, and it's something different from a slice of bread for a change.

The wait staff wants to clear the tables too quickly. It is not pleasant.

Since the takeover, the coffee is much waterier and has far less flavor! The same goes for the soup. The service is still slow, perhaps more so than before. But the main problem is the atmosphere: the authentic second living room feel has been traded for a commodified business model that is an empty shell of what it once was.

I’m an international student here in Maastricht. Here there are a huge variety of places, all delicious and original. However, there are some that make you want to come back. De Brandweerkantine Is one of those: cozy environment, incredible treat and super tasty food. Definitely they will see me more than once.

It's a beautiful and welcoming place. Great atmosphere. The food is good and the staff is friendly. The only thing is that you need to go with plenty of time and patience because the service is quite slow.

The service was friendly, but only in English. Additionally, everything was very fast, a bit too fast. We hadn't even sat down yet when we were asked what we wanted to drink. We had just ordered, and the food was already there. Our plates weren't even empty yet and we were already asked if we wanted dessert. Our conversation was interrupted three times with the question of whether we needed anything else. I saw this happening to other groups around us as well.

Cool atmosphere, friendly service, and delicious food at a reasonable price. Dogs welcome. Reservations not required this Saturday.

A really chill place in a former fire station. We were there for breakfast and had fruit with yogurt and crunch, as well as a hearty open-faced sandwich. A very filling portion. The service was very friendly and attentive.

Beautiful location, but outrageous prices. Offering a summer sandwich and then serving a slice of bread with some quark and exactly one fig on top for 13 euros is truly cheeky. The plate also looked very carelessly presented – not a lettuce leaf, nothing, just a slice of bread.

For the past 11 years, we have been fans of De Brandweerkantine, under the inspiring leadership of Willem Hermans and Karin Winkens. A delightful spot in Maastricht, with the feeling of enjoying yourself in one of those special establishments in Berlin. By that, I mean the decor, the vibe, and the delicious food that you can hardly find served anywhere else in the area. Since March 1, 2026, Isabel van der Vleuten and Kim van Beljouw have taken over the business from Willem and Karin. We have been there twice already, and I must say that I was particularly pleasantly surprised the second time. In just three months, they have expanded the menu with delicious vegetarian and vegan dishes. During our first visit, shortly after the takeover, we mentioned that we are vegans. At that time, the menu already contained a few delicious dishes from Willem and Karin's time, but the selection was still limited. How fantastic it is, then, to see that this has been picked up so well in such a short time! Honestly, I haven't experienced that anywhere else. As a result, De Brandweerkantine has become even more accessible to vegetarians and vegans. In this day and age, I see that as a sign that, as the owner of such a place, you understand very well what is going on and how to move with the times, without losing sight of the establishment's character. Fortunately, the unique interior has remained the same, with the understanding that the number of tables and chairs has been expanded in a clever way. And perhaps even more importantly: that wonderful, quirky vibe is thankfully still there too. Hats off to the chef in the kitchen and his team, of course!!! What they put on the table is not only delicious but also shows that vegetarian and vegan food can simply be fantastic 🤤 And above all: hats off to the amazing customer friendliness of Kim, Isabel, and their team! 🥰 We will certainly keep coming back here more often and will absolutely continue to recommend De Brandweerkantine to anyone who wants to enjoy delicious food and a wonderful vibe in a unique location in Maastricht! This is such a lovely and unique place. It is beautifully decorated, and you can still clearly see the old elements of the fire station. Wonderful for catching up with friends, but also a nice spot to relax by yourself and read a book. There are many vegetarian options. My favorite in Maastricht.

Beautiful interior and cozy atmosphere. The new croissant with vanilla ice cream and fig jam is heavenly. The coffee here is also good; tasty cappuccino and iced latte :)) Highly recommended!!

I found orval beer, coming from Anvers. One of the best frozen yogurt in Maastricht.

We had a delicious meal at the Brandweerkantine! The service was very good, the staff was incredibly friendly, and we were served quickly and accurately. The menu selection was also very extensive, with something for everyone and beautifully presented dishes. Definitely recommended!

Used to be my go spot, since the owner change the staff is slower less attentive and just kinda bad, they make mistakes when taking orders, paying etc. Never got food there but even options are poor and quite expensive together with drinks

We visited this place twice during our stay in Maastricht. Once on Tuesday (Riesenschnitzel Day) and once today. The steak was simply fantastic. Both times it was superb. The food was delicious and the staff were incredibly kind to us and our dog. We will definitely come back when we are next in the area.

What a gem! The breakfast I had was delicious! It was tasty, arrived swiftly and the portions were big. I thought the yoghurt would be a nice side dish for my breakfast, but it was a rather big bowl of thick yoghurt stuffed with amazing fruits and granola. The service was top notch, the staff is fast and friendly. I loved getting two cookies with my coffee. The vibe is great. The trees outside offered some nice shade on the sunny day that we went and the decor is so cozy with lovely little nooks to sit in. We were really happy to stumble upon this place when walking from the car to the city.

Nice and roomy seating both inside and out. Old school vintage furniture of different sizes. Some nice alternative food options and non alcoholic drink options. So nice alternative option just outside the city center.

A customer from the very beginning. De Brandweer has always had a surprising menu with well-thought-out flavor combinations; you can also have a light meal there. Good value for money. Unfortunately, the service remains hit and miss, which means I no longer take the risk of bringing guests along. They are masters at avoiding your gaze, even when it’s not busy—a shame.

We got this recommended by relatives and it seemed nice on first glance. The lunch menu was still on all tables by dinner time, which is fine, it happens. The plates are too big and unhandly for the waitresses, causing them to drop a lot of things. Being a waitress, i can say itms definitely the plates. The prices are elevated, and unfortunately not for a good reason: We waited exactly an hour for the food to arrive and then had both an almost completely cold beef and another completely cold meat dish. Certainly not a restaurant we are coming back to.

Met here with a group on a Thursday evening. Only had some wine and friets . The mayo was amazing. Service was good. Lovely atmosphere. It was busy, a little loud, and sometimes cigarette smoke made it's way to our inside table. Otherwise lovely. Will definitely go back to try more food.

Always a good and pleasant place to sit. Nice terrace, tasty cocktails. Unfortunately, this time we had to pay €9.50 for this almond cake. Even after we pointed out that it was very small, it was put back on the table; ‘the kitchen says that’s how it’s supposed to be’. A shame and very expensive for a bite of cake.

I came here around 2, the waiter was already drunk. I was promised a cappucino, but this one never arrived. The staff was sitting in the corner and didn't even notice us coming in. Only reason for not giving one star, were the free cookies and beer.

Nice place to eat and drink something

We had reserved a table for four people for 5 pm via email. We were advised not to arrive too early and to be on time. We did so, checked in with the staff, and were politely told to choose a table. The restaurant was empty inside and there was still space outside. After we sat down, nothing happened. No one paid any attention to us or responded to our inquiries. Excuse me, but that's unacceptable! So we left without food or drinks. Not recommended!

A really nice, spacious setup with lots of games available! We sat comfortably in the corner with the vintage sofa and chairs playing a game of Monopoly and enjoying a delicious vegan falafel sandwich. And oh yes, the green mandarin lemonade is great too!!

We drove three hours specifically from the east of the country to attend the weekly Tuesday evening schnitzel night. We reserved a table for 7:45 PM and ordered a nice beer, but when we placed our order, we were saddened to hear that the schnitzel was sold out. An incredible letdown, especially since a table next to us was still cheerfully being served a schnitzel. It must have been the very last one. Anyway – the dish we ordered instead tasted delicious, but apart from a very subdued English apology, we received no further gesture from this place.

We had two smashed avocado 🥑 and smoked salmon 🍣 breakfast 🍳 and it was really tasty and delicious. The server first took our order incorrectly but he was really nice and patient. He returned the food and got us the right one. Very cute and warm environment 😍😍❤️❤️

Good food, pleasant atmosphere, good service and large space.

You're having a conversation with your table partner and tell them to choose the type of fries they want (potatoes or sweet potatoes), as long as they are WITHOUT SALT. The waitress is part of this conversation yet she brings fries with salt. You remind them about the request. She remembers the conversation very clearly but says you didn't order them without salt. Seriously? Did I have to put it in writing? In any case, you can always add salt to fries, but you can't remove it once added. Ridiculous service.

On the advice of the subdistrict court judge, we went for dinner here after the hearing. A nice, trendy location (old fire station) with an excellent (lunch) menu.

New owners. Beer still good, prices really gone up sharply. Food worse, atmosphere worse. Justification: The atmosphere on the terrace is still pleasant, but that is due to the crowds and the terrace layout/with plants etc. has simply remained the same. Inside, the atmosphere is more conformist; the service is faster due to the use of appliances, but more revenue needs to be generated. The staff wear the same outfits, and the manager keeps his "own" clothes on to emphasize hierarchy "behind the new reception desk" and doesn't help out either. The new owners do not understand the success of the old concept at all. It has become a "cash cow". Previously, there was a flat structure where the staff could have an authentic chat and be themselves, which really helped with the good atmosphere; there was no "rush". The kitchen has gotten worse, the menu has been significantly shortened, no more organic, it closes earlier, no more schnitzel evening. I think the place closes earlier anyway. All the old staff/kitchen is gone. In short, compared to the original concept, it is ruined.

One of my favorite spots since forever but please bring the kombucha drinks back!!! Sweet potato fries are the best in town!

And I really liked the style with its antiques and loft-like feel. The breakfast portions are extremely generous and delicious – enough to explore the city afterwards or celebrate graduation for a whole day. Also well-suited for groups.

edit: After the takeover, Brandweer has lost its soul. The new owners do not understand the rebellious character and image of this place. Unique drinks have given way to cocktails from a bottle. Experimental dishes have had to make way for bitterballen. Brandweer was certainly not without flaws before, but it was a unique place in a city where only the chic and well-dressed clientele thrives. Now, unfortunately, they are being absorbed into the landscape of mediocre tourism machines that exist solely to milk as much money out of the customer as possible instead of focusing on quality. I won't be going there anymore! Delicious food, tasty specialty drinks, and an aesthetically pleasing spot! Service could be better, though; you often have to wait quite a long time before someone comes to your table.

I've been there 3 times since the takeover and received great service every time! Someone was at the table within 5 minutes, which is very different from what I was used to before. (Normally this took at least 20 minutes) The lunch was very tasty and good gluten-free! They have nice drinks and that makes me happy!

Great place!! Superb interior and location, top-notch service, and a nice little menu. The Wiener Schnitzel special (I always have it on Tuesdays) was unfortunately disappointing. The price was rather high for Maastricht, and it was barely lukewarm and felt about 1 1/2 thumbs thick. No puffing whatsoever.

Rumor has it that the Brandweerkantine has new owners. This is evident in the prices and the fact that they do not serve tap water – a shame for a restaurant with a charming alternative profile and good ambiance. The food is good; De Brandweerkantine understands how to make vegetables 'swing' on your plate alongside meat. Attention has clearly been paid to this. The service is friendly but not very proactive. Why only 2/5? The waiting time. We were seated in the restaurant at 18:00 and received our main courses at 19:45 (approx. 1 hour and 20 minutes after ordering). Information was only provided when we asked for it; I believe we received some free bread as compensation. The long waiting time and poor communication undermine the pleasure of being in a restaurant, especially if you have other appointments scheduled. In other words: I don't want to write that you have to wait nearly 1.5 hours for your food here, but just keep it in mind ;) Undoubtedly, these are just teething problems, and the Brandweerkantine will live up to the good image it still holds in the foreseeable future.

Mixed experiences. Sometimes very good, sometimes a bit less so in terms of service. The food is fine and the location is great.

Located in the former fire brigades garage, a bit outside the center of Maastricht. Good variety in the menu to suit vegetarians, vegans and meat/fish eaters. Interesting combinations. We had the white fish with asparagus and the ball zucchinis with feta cheese. Both excellent and recommended. The leafy salad was good, too, because it was indeed a large bowl of mixed salad leafs. Just the way I like it! We did not have space in our stomachs to try a dessert, but the black coffee was good and came with a small chocolate chip cookie. Deco de time here in had the roodbaars filet with wild spinach. Again a good choice. Proces went up significantly within one year. Samen everywhere..... The brandweer kantine has a nice outdoor terras and multiple cocktails, beers and wines. You can spend a long and pleasant evening here.

Edit 2: rollercoaster visit after the take over. Underwhelming lunch and soft drinks menu. The portion size was positively surprising to the price, however everyone's dish was oversalted and thus salty rather than flavourful. Furthermore they don't provide tap water anymore despite consuming drinks as well. Can't see myself coming here as often as I did before. Dissapointed. Delete reviews from before the take over! Edit: new staff is very attentive and quick in service. The menu this year (2025) has been insanely good. Recommended. Lovely terrace! Staff is friendly but many times it feels as if I have to wait a long time to get their attention even if I go stand by the bar. Regardless of, would still recommend this place for enjoying a drink at their terrace.

It has been taken over, but as I said to one of the employees, the heart, the soul of the fire station canteen is gone. I could even feel it. It has become more commercial, more staff control, no more tap water, the unique liqueurs are gone. That is often how it goes: a creative person starts it and the commercial types take over. I went there for years on Tuesday evenings... And it’s not bad, but as I said... it’s becoming more standard. A shame, and I’m looking for new creatives in town.

I had been a big fan for years and liked coming often because the menu always gave me decision stress. So I always wanted to go back. But unfortunately, the menu didn't appeal to us as much as before since the new owners implemented changes. A few staples have remained, but still, we no longer choose the canteen without thinking twice; it's a shame.

i am quite disappointed about the new changes. the delicious menu with special meals and cocktails you couldn’t get anywhere else in the city is now replaced and reduced to the average dutch food you can find at markt or vrijthof. what used to be a cozy, warm place that felt like me and my friends second living room is now more of a touristic, commercial restaurant which we already have plenty of in maastricht. it’s just sad to see a place that i loved so dearly lose its spark.

Food was nice, but we waited for 50 minutes for a toast with bacon on it to arrive. If you think that a toast with bacon is worth 50 minutes of your precious time, you’re in the right place!

Brunch and lunch are available in a former fire station. The depot has been converted into a canteen, but unfortunately, little remains of the fire department. The food is good and varied, including vegetarian options. The fresh orange juice and Strammermax are definitely recommended.

The location is really unique and has a nice vibe. The food and drinks are great too. The service is always polite and friendly, but tends to be quite slow and you might have to signal someone down fairly often. Drinks and location mostly make up for that though :)

Cool spot but families with children are not made to feel welcome. No highchairs available. We waited for 20min and had to go get the waiters to take our order (there were 4 all chilling at the bar and many tables waiting). There were toy cars available for play but kids were repeatedly asked to put toys away even though there was plenty space and nobody was in anyone’s way.

We had dinner in the evening, but it was very disappointing. We had made a reservation quite early, but the waiter gave us a vague explanation that some tables were early, so ours wasn't available yet. We were asked to wait for a drink at the side of the restaurant. We sat there for half an hour, but when I went over to the same waiter to ask if our table was available, he gave me a blank stare and went to clear a table for us. Very unusual. The food was mediocre. My table companion had a curry that was mediocre, and I had the fish with gnocchi; there were six gnocchi in the entire dish. All in all, not recommended.

I don't know how many times a server, often in a state of low stature, has to walk past the table before they finally deign to ask the guest what they would like. In our case, it happened six times, and after about 20 minutes of waiting, I was ready to leave with my javelin in hand.
