⭐ 1 star – Very bad experience, never again! Today we had a very bad experience at Café Gent aan de Schinkel. This was definitely the last time we went there. We arrived around lunchtime to have something to eat with friends, but upon entering, the main entrance was completely blocked by a drinks delivery. There were stacks of crates of soda and beer everywhere, and the delivery drivers were throwing the crates right in the middle of the diners. The noise was immense and it went on and on—for a good twenty minutes—while everyone looked visibly irritated. When my husband politely asked if this was going to take much longer and if this was the right time to make such a delivery in the middle of the café, we received a downright rude response from an employee, Kira (who didn't even speak Dutch). Her response was literally: "You don't have to be here." When he asked for a manager, she told us again that we could just leave. We found this truly appalling behavior towards paying customers. The cafe is also outdated, with dirty restrooms, and the prices are absurdly high—€25 for a simple Caesar salad! In short: rude staff, bad atmosphere, poor hygiene, and way too expensive. We'll never go back, and I advise everyone against eating here.

Good place for dinner. I would recommend making a reservation, as there is a chance that there will be no free tables. We ordered Stella beer, with bitterbolen as a starter, which came with freshly baked bread with olive oil and sauce. For the main course we ordered hamburgers with fries, which were very tasty. I would recommend this place if you are looking for a relaxed dinner, in a warm atmosphere.

We visited this place on a Tuesday evening. The atmosphere was nice and made for a pleasant visit. However, the service was quite slow, and we had to wait a long time before being attended to even though it was not so busy. The food and drinks were okay — nothing exceptional, but enjoyable enough. Overall, it was a nice evening out despite the slow service.

The food was good, and the atmosphere was pleasant. But when I got the bill, an American-style "tip" screen immediately appeared on the card reader. Look, I like to tip, but not like this.

It was nice to dine by the canal here. Very picturesque and peaceful. Great vibes. The reuben sandwich was great! And loved the side salad with silver onions for the croquets. The service however was very bad. Waiters did not return with the English menu, them giving us orders for another table etc. Would return for the vibe and food but will be ready for the bad service.

We had compliment from them as bread with aioli and olive oil. It was cute. Also there are, tasty tuna, nice selection of dishes and good service. One mistake it’s only dirty WC (but this can be fixed) We liked this place:)

Great View!!! This place is near of the canal. Prices are below of average prices in Amsterdam.

Nice bar with lots of space. Even though it was quite busy, the staff stayed very attentive and the service was fast. The burger wasn’t perfect, but still really tasty. Overall, a pleasant place to spend time!

One of the most relaxed places I know, with attentive service, a fantastic terrace where you can enjoy your beer and wine, but also have a very good meal (although I don't usually do that there).

Gent aan de Schinkel is a great place to hang out, have a beer, eat good food (and nibble on Bitterballen), ease into the communal ambience, and watch the world pedal by. Service was erratic (our server often busy snogging her boyfriend…ah, youth!), but that seemed in keeping with the place. Recommend!

A lovely spot by the water or a bike path... a large, popular terrace. Perfect for unwinding, relaxing, or meeting up with someone.

A nice terrace near the park with a menu of all kinds of dishes, including vegetarian ones. The hummus and roasted vegetable platter was excellent! The service could be faster, but it's very friendly, and there's a beautiful terrace near the canals.

The place is great! Although the food prices seemed a bit high. Then it happened that they brought us some fried food to share, and the girl serving dropped something on the floor. We thought she was going to replace it, but she didn't.

Lovely place to chill-out by the canal sipping a beer or wine with typical Dutch nibbles.

This afternoon we sat on the terrace. Service was great, drinks ok, price on the high side.

Reasonable pricing for well prepared food. It was a busy night and the small kitchen was coping well. The Italian bean soup was very well prepared, yet lacked spice - typical of Dutch cooking. On a positive note, there was salt and pepper on table. Served with a freshly bsked bread, pesto and parmesan. The hamburger and fries were well prepared. Service was attentive for suvh a busy evening.

The ass in white pants got me there, I wouldn't have gotten there using the map...

A bit faster service would have given more turnover. Snacks were ok, but "value for money" was a bit lacking.

Después de registrarnos en el hotel cercano, intentamos encontrar algo para comer en una tarde fría y lluviosa. Mientras seguía caminando, le preguntamos a un lugareño que paseaba al perro que nos recomendó este lugar. Nuestra experiencia fue bastante diferente de las críticas negativas anteriores. El bar / restaurante o pub estaba lleno de bebedores locales. El ambiente era animado y relajante y era lo que se suponía que era un pub. Nos dieron un menú inglés y el personal nos atendió muy bien durante toda la noche. Pedimos un filete con patatas fritas y ensalada y una hamburguesa con patatas fritas con 2 cervezas de barril. También nos dieron dos panecillos calientes con ajo mayo y aceite de oliva y vinagre basámico en la casa que eran muy sabrosos. Nuestra comida era buena a pesar de mi filete no era de la mejor calidad, pero no estaba nada mal. Nuestra factura vino como 55 euros que nos pareció muy razonable. Sin duda disfrutamos de nuestra noche y recomendaría a otros turistas si te alojas alrededor.

Sat outside on the terrace with some friends. They have a wide selection of beers and other alcoholic drinks. The snacks were a joke when we were there. We had run out of veal croquettes, so we opted for the shrimp croquettes and nachos. Shrimp croquettes were very expensive for what you get and the Nachos had little cheese and the top was burnt... A bit of a shame. Staff was friendly, but sometimes took a very long time when they came back to us. They do have a heater on the terrace when it gets cold, so that was a plus.

Imagine this (and if you refuse to, jump to the last paragraph): me, a dumb American tourist, traveling outside of the USA for the first time in his life. I'm still learning how to navigate everything in Amsterdam, as I'm new to all of it. It's the middle of April, so it's kind of cold and wet. I got mixed up on how Donkey Republic bike rentals work, so I unnecessarily ended my rental for the day while I was someplace I didn't recognize at all. My phone is on 2%, and I do the first thing I think of: using the last of my battery, I google the closest restaurant, memorize the path, and begin to walk there. My phone dies immediately afterward. So now I'm in the biggest city I've ever been in, alone, with a dead phone (but thankfully a phone charger in my bag), it's beginning to rain, and the sun is setting. The restaurant I was walking to was some place called Gent aan de Schinkel. After a ~10 minute walk, I think (correctly) that I've found the place. I walk in, and all of the tension begins to leave my body. This place was incredibly cozy and perfectly warm. As I nervously approach the bar, there's a bearded man about my age tending the bar, making friendly conversation with a coworker in Dutch. Mijn Nederlands is niet echt goed, so I don't really understand them. I ask the man if he can help me, and he responds warmly that, of course he can. I ask if I can charge my phone behind the bar. He takes my phone and charger, and plugs it in for me, simple as. He tells me I'm welcome to sit at the bar and make myself comfortable while it charges. I make some small talk with him while he works, and everyone's moving so swiftly, yet purposefully, and they all seem in great spirits. I ordered some fries and a warm tea while I waited (my charger is terrible, so it took a long while), and honestly? Just sitting there, I had a really nice time. The staff made me very comfortable, they helped me a lot, and on top of it all, the fries were very good, and the tea was quite nice. I wish I could remember the bartender's name so I could give him a shout-out by name, but all I remember is that he had a beard. (also there was such a cute waiter there with long red hair, and I was so nervous to talk to him, but I told him he had really nice hair 💜 ) TL;DR this is a very nice, comfortable local place that helped a dumb tourist out in his time of need. I'm very appreciative of it. I also had some fries and tea while there, and they were both great.

I just had a few drinks now, it remains a nice place to meet up with friends and acquaintances. Staff is always friendly here again 👍✨️🙏🏽

Cozy location, decent menu with a Flemish twist here and there. In addition to the menu, you can also order daily specials. The quality of the dishes is excellent. Nice beer selection and excellent house wines. Friendly young people in the service, when it is really busy you sometimes have to be a little more patient, but that is really no problem in cozy Ghent aan de Schinkel.

Didn't eat but the rest was fine

If you like Belgium beers, this is a great place. Sadly, I was ignored a fews times when my beer was empty. One of these times, a dog got served instead of me. When I said something to the bar tender, all he did was make excuses and say "sorry". I won't be back.

Nice spot. Friendly stuff. Not very fast always though. Surprised of the raised prices. Flat white coffee 5 Euros?!!! Didn’t seem to me like a special coffee brewer place to justify such a price.

It was a cool evening tonight so we sat inside. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. The food was delicious, the atmosphere cosy but with character and the staff were very friendly and helpful. When we next come back to Amsterdam we will definitely come here.

Wanted to have dinner in the good weather but somehow our main courses arrived super late. We we’re starving and the waiter couldn’t tell what’s happened. He did offer some free drinks and bites and the food which finally arrived was of alright quality. But still not a satisfying experience

Favourite terrace in my neighbourhood. The best corner, there is always something to see, boats passing, busy bridge, lots of near misses. Service is always friendly and they have a great selection of beers and the cava was pretty tasty too. Have tried food here quite a few times and the snacks and small dishes always deliver ☺️

Nice place to chill out by the canal. The food menu is not super diverse but they sometimes have specials including sea food which is pretty good. The service is at times slow, but who cares if you’re relaxed and watching large boats passing by …

Very sweet professional staff. Enjoyed outdoor seating while looking at the bridge and canal. The food was fresh, reasonably priced, and worthy of a repeat visit simply drinks and appetizers or a full meal.

Such a cute bar right on the river! Great outdoor terrace. They have Jack’s Precious IPA and Brand on tap. Cool vibes, gorgeous staff and really nice music if you sit inside. Would recommend for sure.

Als een schijnbaar ontwikkeld stel een probleem maakt van de spiegeling van mijn lampje van mijn telefoon om de menukaart te lezen dan hou ik me in. Als dit stelletje herrie blijft maken en ik zeg er iets van tegen het personeel, ben ik schijnbaar niet correct. Waar moet het naar toe in deze stad zonder een baard. Ik laat mijn telefoon op via groene stroom, lol. Ik woon 35 jaar om de hoek. Dit is een nieuwe ervaring. Ik was in Gent afgelopen weekend, niet te vergelijken met dit. 1 jonge dame van de bediening begreep het. Andere niet. Advies: check het menu vooraf via internet, lampje van iPhones alleen te gebruiken op aanwijzing van gasten.

We waited more than 45 minutes for just a couple of beers and bitterballen. Eventually had to leave before even we had any service. Not recommend. Great atmosphere but terrible service!

Worst service I've ever had in my entire life. We waited almost half an hour for the manya to be brought to us, and were periodically reminded of this. Then they caught the waiter to place an order. This was also a challenge. After we finally placed an order, they only brought out half of the order. We came to the restaurant together, only one of us was brought food. To the question: where is the rest? We were told that this dish was not ordered, that is, it was not in their system. We ordered again, they promised to bring it in 10 minutes. After contacting the waiters again, the food arrived much later than promised. It's a shame that such a cool place with amazing atmosphere and incredibly tasty food suffers from such waiters.

An excellent pub with great food and drinks on offer. The menu is not the most adventurous out there, but what they do they do it really well.

What an incredibly bad tent. Literally no more words for it. I have lived in this neighborhood all my life and this tent is therefore a substantial part of it. However, the entire atmosphere has become so un-Amsterdam and nasty that I would really rather never come there again. 1. It takes 20 minutes for someone to even look up at you 2. When I stop a waiter half shouting, he ignores and walks on to speak to the owner about how they are going to increase sales (what the strategies are here); quite ironic that you are going to discuss a plan of action but at the same time you cannot serve your guests. Defeats the entire purpose of having a cafe/restaurant. 3. Waiters walk through the shop very unhygienically with bare hands and frozen bitterballs in their hands; where have your HACCP standards gone? 4. When you finally get your food and drink, it's thrown down as if you're inferior. In conclusion: Very sad case, which, instead of going along with the neighborhood, literally ruins the neighborhood. Please employ different staff here and, if possible, a new owner, as he does not seem to have his affairs in order either.

Great place for an occasional drink

Especially for a Belgian, this place feels line coming home. Cosy terrace next to one of the canals just outside of the tourist area but 2 minutes from Vondelpark. Super cosy with the lights when it gets dark. Very broad selection of Belgian craft beers. Food is very good value for money. Definitely try their beef stew (stoofvlees), which is made the traditional way and is absolutely delicious!

The beef stew and duck was perfect. Nice location, healthy food and loads of unhealthy alcohol for a perfect dinner out. Normal prices and wonderful atmosphere.

Good food with well sized portions. Very chilled and laid back vibe here. They also have a good beer collection. All in all: great place for an early evening or late afternoon drink and some flavourful warm food.
