't Nieuwe Kafé in Burgwallen-Nieuwe Zijde

If you are looking for the Amsterdam of yesteryear, you have come to the right place. Real old-fashioned Amsterdam service, grumpy. In that mood, you get your coffee for a modern tourist price.

They advertise Tea Coffee and pastries on a board but we sat down and weren’t given a menu so had no idea what to order when they just came up to us for our order. I get that you pay for the location and we took that into account when sitting down but a bit more attention to detail wouldn’t go a miss.

I had a lunch with a friend, we both ordered an agnus beef burger. I had a gluten-free bun, so their bun was smaller than the patty which they did tell me beforehand which was no problem. I asked to remove the caramalised onion since I'm intolerant to that. The bun wasnt anything crazy. It was good. My friend felt the same way about his regular burger. We both ordered ginger with mint tea which was great! They put a good amount of mint and ginger in there. It isnt part of the menu so I had to ask for it seperately which they accommodated to with no problem!

It's quite a nice spot with many toilets. They have two seperate rooms, that contain 5+ genderneutral toilets per room. Which is acknowledged with a little board in front of the toilets. They allow you to dry your hands with paper towels which I prefer over the blow dryers at any day. I did however see some brown stains at the bottom of some seats that could really use some bleach.

My friends and I had an amazing lunch at ‘T Nieuwe Kafé and are so glad we popped in. The atmosphere on the plaza is so lively and fun, and the menu offers something for everyone…breakfast all day, bar bites, toasters, pizza, sandwiches, soups, and great fries. Best of all, the servers are very attentive and helpful. Our server, Linus, couldn’t have been kinder nor quicker. We’ll tell our friends to come!

When I asked at the counter for the price of a beer, I couldn't read the name. A middle-aged woman then laughed at me in an unpleasant, mocking way. I had simply asked the price, yet I felt she was making fun of me. It was very rude and uncomfortable. The beer was then served by a young man. He asked me where I was from. When I answered, however, he showed little interest. He didn't smile and didn't even say "thank you" at the end. In my opinion, if you ask a customer about their country of origin, you should also know how to engage in appropriate small talk. If you find it difficult to be friendly with customers, you could at least try to smile a little more and be more polite. Overall, as an Asian woman, I didn't feel respected in this café. The woman's mocking behavior, in particular, was very unpleasant. I felt that I was being prejudiced against because of my Asian heritage. To me, this place feels like it has an anti-Asian attitude. I won't be visiting this café again.

Had a delicious lunch on the terrace, with a beautiful view of the dam. Service was fast and the food and drinks were served very quickly. The avocado toast and brioche pulled pork are highly recommended! Would definitely come back here again.

Had 2 coffees, payment didn't go through: ended up paying €8.90 per cup of coffee. It was tasty coffee, but very pricey!

A very good place for breakfast or lunch in Amsterdam. We ordered several different dishes, and each one was delicious. The salmon sandwich was fresh, full of toppings, and really filling. The French toast with fruit was a great sweet breakfast. The real surprise, however, were the sweet potato fries – crispy, generously sprinkled with Parmesan cheese, and served with a delicious sauce. The friendly service, pleasant atmosphere, and aesthetically pleasing dishes are also excellent. Everything is prepared with high-quality ingredients and is well worth the price. I definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a good breakfast or brunch spot in Amsterdam.

On Sunday morning, we sat down on the café's outdoor terrace. At that time, perhaps 5 of the approximately 30 tables were occupied. After a wait of about 10 minutes, a young waiter came and took our order (one freshly squeezed orange juice and two cappuccinos) rather curtly. The drinks arrived quickly. I was impressed by the cappuccino's foam. The coffee specialty also tasted excellent. There was nothing to complain about with the freshly squeezed orange juice either, except that it could perhaps have been a bit colder. Unfortunately, the service was really poor, or rather, simply nonexistent. No thank you, please, or anything at all. The young waiter hid inside the restaurant from new customers. Perhaps he was just having a bad day or a short night… Nevertheless, anyone looking for a good cup of coffee will be very happy at 't Nieuwe Kafé.

Centrally located near the royal palace, nice terrace, food okay but nothing special. Far too expensive, especially the coffee: a tiny cup for €5.75.

What a nice and cozy spot, had a delicious lunch on the terrace, and even though it was busy, the toilets were neat and clean, super.

Pleasant reception, sufficient reserved seats for a group of about 20 people. Service and waitstaff were prompt, professional, and friendly.

Stopped for a big lunch. We did a sandwich & a salad plus a side of fries and drinks. Large portions. Very tasty - best open faced steak sandwich I’ve had.

We were expecting a small thoughtful gesture for my girlfriend’s birthday, but unfortunately it turned into a disappointing experience. I ordered a cheesecake and kindly asked them to write “Happy Birthday” on the plate. However, the presentation we received was extremely careless and looked rushed. As you can see in the photo, the writing was messy and poorly done, which really ruined the special feeling of the moment. The cheesecake itself was okay, but presentation is an important part of the customer experience — especially for a birthday celebration. We honestly expected a bit more care and attention. I hope they improve this in the future.

We were lucky to get a table because it's quite difficult, the setting is not bad but too busy for my taste, it's an iconic place in the city, be careful with your budget because it's expensive and not affordable for everyone.

We ordered the tomato soup, onion soup, and a cheese platter—everything was really good. The place was clean, and the staff were nice and welcoming. Food was ready quickly, which was a plus. There’s a beautiful terrace with a view of Dam Square, or you can sit inside. Only downside is that there are no high chairs available. Still, a great spot and would definitely come back.

Great location on Dam Square, staff very smartly dressed, quick efficient service. Our wine was delicious. I loved the wine glass and asked to buy one. The Manager kindly gave me a fresh glass. It was our last drink before going to the airport so it was a great memory as we left Amsterdam. Definitely recommended and a great spot to people watch in the sun.

Very good coffee and fantastic carrot cake

Delicious bitterballen and croquettes, the fries were good. The waiter was very kind, helpful, and responsive. They even provided cozy blankets on the outdoor patio seats to keep warm. In short, a perfect experience.

The food was delicious! The toasted sandwiches are truly artisan-made. From your seat, you have a view of the Royal Palace, and the location is ideal: central to all Amsterdam attractions. Highly recommended!

Nice restaurant with a lovely terrace, right in the middle of Dam Square in Amsterdam, overlooking the Royal Palace. The chairs also have seat heating (👌👌). We enjoyed a croquette sandwich, a few drinks, and the beautiful view!

The Smoking cafe'😷 But else, it's a great clean place with very tastefull food. Anyway, the smoking customers tables outside should be placed in their own area😷 Espresso/ flat white is not very good. Buy you a real espressomachine☕

Nice place to stop for a drink if you are going somewhere

We found this cafe on our second last day in Amsterdam. We had great breakfasts. And the granola is fabulous, not to be missed. It's on the Dam, so all round a great place to eat, enjoy some down time and a chat with Jim!

We found a hair in the scrambled eggs, which left us feeling less than hungry. We left breakfast halfway through. Due to the lack of hygiene, they didn't charge us for an orange juice. We spent 40 euros between two people and left feeling nauseous. Not at all recommended.

Very touristy. The food is unfortunately just okay, nothing truly great, but fine if you're just looking for something to eat, a snack, or a drink after a long day exploring the city. The staff is very friendly, though.

A nice, well-located café with a good selection of drinks and food. We sat outside, which, of course, does involve some noise due to its location, but it wasn't disturbing. The food was delicious and the staff very friendly and accommodating. They even brought us a water bowl each for our two dogs. The menu is available in Dutch and English.

At first, I thought, I'd like to have a drink here sometime. Once on the terrace, I was treated rudely! A very aggressive man slammed his glass on the table because I'd rather not have ice in my drink. I paid at the café, and he behaved perfectly; a chameleon is nothing compared to that. What a shame, it can be so cozy on the terrace! I won't be coming back; they're incredibly expensive. I could spend my money better.

We return to the ‘t Nieuwe Kafé numerous times whenever we are in Amsterdam. The food is amazing - breakfast, lunch or early dinner. It’s hard to pick our favourites but we love the breakfasts or having an awesome tostii and salad. Liv, Nicole, Lea & the ‘boys’ treat us like family! There is nowhere else I would go instead of here! Looking forward to our next trip back to Amsterdam!

I visited T Nieuwe Kafe in Amsterdam today. The café is centrally located and has a nice, modern atmosphere. The service was friendly and attentive, which was a positive. The food tasted okay—solid, but nothing special. Unfortunately, I found the prices quite high compared to the quality offered. For what was served, I thought it was a bit overpriced. If you're looking for a relaxing break, you can certainly stop by here, but don't expect any culinary highlights and should be prepared for somewhat higher prices.

Decent breakfast served at chilling cold indoor temperature. The owner claims malfunctioning heating and ventilation. If a true Dutch man may save himself just a few Euros he will do so no matter what.

We stopped off at this cafe, which is conveniently located in Dam Square for a drink and a snack at lunch time. I had a latte and the wife had a regular English breakfast tea. For food I had the salmon baguette she had the soup on offer. Both the food and drinks were nice, and set us up for the rest of the day. Worth a visit for lunch if you’re in the area.

Such a busy spot, but that server was like a superman. We order the croquettes, and they were delish. The location, in the square on a sunny day, cannot be beat. Great spot to linger.

Made a quick stop on Saturday, between the “redlight district” and the Jordaan. Only had a few beers, service and hospitality was good. So I have no judgment about the food.

Went there for breakfast and wasn't disappointed. Food was very good, service was great, nothing to complain about. The cafe is beautifully designed. The prices are reasonable, the waiting time was good. In any case, I would recommend this cafe.

this was truly one of the best meals i’ve had in amsterdam, the lady who served our table was super nice and i am glad i followed her recommendation because that sandwich was fulfilling and very tasty. it’s overall quite pricey but it’s understandable considering the location (in dam square, near the royal palace and the tussuads museum) and, well, amsterdam average prices. + the beef round croquettes were HEAVENLY.

Had a delicious breakfast on the terrace at 't Nieuwe Kafé with a view of Dam Square. The avocado toast and French toast were delicious. Mauris helped us very well and gave us advice on what to do in Amsterdam. We will definitely come back again!

Super food with friendly service and good value for money

The best food we encountered being in Amsterdam, decided to make it a habit across the days we were there of visiting here. The waiter ( Robin ) gave us our same table outside each of the days. Food was fantastic. Heated seats outside with a blanket and a view across the city centre of Amsterdam. Will be back next year and visiting here again! The French toast with vanilla ice cream was the best thing we tried without doubt.

One of the most delicious toasties I’ve ever had, really good! The staff were very welcoming and attentive and the menu had some great options. The seats were comfortable and the venue didn’t feel too cramped. I would definitely come again next time I visit Amsterdam.

We went for a drink during our shopping day, many people were sitting outside but it was only 2 degrees so we sat inside. Great place for 2 people, we were in a place that could fit 10 people. This was no problem, I didn't get the feeling that we were in the wrong place. Enough staff.
