What's your favorite 🇳🇱 Dutch food? Mine is... not Dutch food! 🤣 More seriously, Dutch cuisine is not especially notorious. What people know about it are cheese 🧀, stroopwafels 🧇 and maybe poffertjies 🥞? In fact, I watched Netflix' Somebody Feed Phil's episode about Amsterdam and Phil Rosenthal mainly ate foreign cuisine there. There's one local thing that he ate there, and that I love too: herrings 😍. In fact, when my Dutch friends come to visit me, they always bring me herrings 🐟 (sometimes too many and I can't even finish them 😅). I could eat them all day, every day when I'm in Amsterdam, and I would stop by all the herring booths I find in the streets. 😋 But I'm the only one who'd do that in the family so, on our last visit, I only had 1️⃣ herring 🥺, at a booth called Haring & Zo in Binnenstad aka Amsterdam's main touristic area... 🫤 I paid the price you pay in a touristic area (€3.6 for 1️⃣ herring) but I knew that upfront. I was scared it wouldn't be good though but, fortunately, that wasn't the case. In fact I found it great, with the right balance of fat: I didn't feel sick afterwards as I sometimes do when I eat a herring or something that's too fat, in general. 👍 There was a good quantity of onion 🧅 and pickle 🥒 and the onion wasn't too strong (sometimes it covers the flavor of the herring). 👏 The clerk was very nice and laid back, and he kept joking with every customer. That was cool. 👍 What was less cool was that I couldn't pay by card 💳... Well, I could but I had to pay extra. And in 2025, that's not ok. 😤 This place is just a booth, there are no tables, no sitting area, so you just take your herring and eat it on the go.... It would be nice to sit to really focus on what you eat. Herrings can be considered fast food but IMO they're a true delicacy. 🤩 . . . Quality & taste: 9/10 Quantities: 7/10 Atmosphere: n/a Originality: 6/10 Ratio price / quality: 7/10 Service: 9/10 How I felt afterwards: 9/10

As soon as I entered, the fishy smell of herring hit me, which was a bit of a turnoff, but I was able to truly experience the authenticity of the local herring. I paid with my Travel Wallet, but I was disappointed that using a VISA card would cost 20 cents more.

The fish was truly delicious, and I enjoyed eating it. However, it did burn my stomach a bit afterward and make me quite thirsty. This was probably due to the salt-cured fish and the accompanying pickles and onions. Those with sensitive stomachs should be careful. Still, it's a street food worth trying in Amsterdam.

Not the only one I tried in Amsterdam however these herrings I would recommend most. Very delicate however full of taste

The herring is excellent and very fresh. We came back several times because we loved it so much. (Try it without the bread; you'll taste the flavors better.)

It was such a random find for me !!!! Bumped into this small pop up shop by chance. Checked the reviews and had to get it. The herring is awesome and 100% worth getting more than one sandwich. No wonder this place has such high reviews and the herring tastes fantastic with the pickles and onions. Then tried the salmon too. It’s as good as the herring one. Get it if ur in Amsterdam.

This stand has the CLEANEST haring that I have had in Amsterdam. I have long term ate the Haring here with no dysentery! Nearly everyday I grab a sandwich. The fish is perfect and very affordable. Personally I go for a sandwich with pickles and onions on dark bread. LIFESAVER.

It may not appeal to everyone, but I think it's good for a street snack. There are benches in front of it, you can buy it and eat it right there. It's not a flavor worth changing your route for, but if you pass by it while you're there, you can eat it.

I tasted herring in a bun at this establishment — and it was a real taste discovery! The herring is incredibly fresh, tender, with a slight saltiness, the bun is soft and appetizing. I especially liked the combination with crispy onions and pickled cucumber. The dish is served quickly, the service is friendly. Another pleasant surprise — the establishment has a menu in Ukrainian, so choosing a dish was easy and pleasant. An ideal option for a snack while walking around Amsterdam. If you want to experience the true taste of the Netherlands — be sure to try it!

The food tastes very good. We ate herring rolls and fried fish. The sales van is parked at an intersection next to the royal palace. It's a bit noisy and wasn't very clean nearby. But you don't necessarily have to eat there, just take the roll with you and enjoy it in a quieter place.

Here, you can taste Amsterdam's very authentic pickled herring sandwich and fish and chips. It's a small shop, but the food is incredibly delicious. Be aware that if you're paying by card, there might be an additional fee. If you're passing by, it's definitely worth a try!

Kiosk a stone's throw from Dam square, in front of AH. We wanted to try the much talked about herring sandwiches and we were thrilled. Fresh, tasty and unique product. A must try for anyone visiting Amsterdam. The kiosk also offers other dishes, such as salmon sandwiches or plated herring. All at a reasonable price and with quick service. There are only two seats inside the kiosk but you can sit on benches outside. See you soon.

Very clean and well kept stall. We had our second haring for the day in Amsterdam, it was lovely but I personally thought it was a tiny bit salty. Still very fresh though!

So simple and delicious. The herring is so delicious, it's soft and mild, so it definitely needs the onion and the pickles. The crab salad was not that great, though.

When my partner asked what fish was that, the gentleman replied with a "what did you order" style, saying we should know what I got That my partner wanted more information about the fish etc is a good thing, I ordered not him. A portion of raw herring 3.2€, plus pickles and onions 3.4€ It is recommended to add it, it tastes very good Raw herring has no fishy smell and is very delicious. If you like raw fish, you must try it! There are 2 chairs where you can sit and enjoy, but most people eat while standing. There are also chairs outside the stall where you can sit and eat.

Went here to taste herring before leaving amsterdam. We arrived at around 10 am but they didn't have bread yet so we had to wait about 15 mins. While waiting, we tried the raw fish with pickles and onions and it was very tasty and soft (and suprisingly easy on the stomach). We also tried the salmon sandwich which was also very good. I'd definitely recommend.

After watching Bizarre Foods Amsterdam, I had to visit Haring & Zo! The haring was so fresh and delicious - order with pickles and onions. Looks like it is closed because of the construction but it is open!

I ate my first broodje haring (herring sandwich) here and it was served in the traditional way with sliced pickle and onion. The fish was meticulously prepared by the store owner and he was happy to talk about when the first fresh catch of the season will arrive in the middle of June. I ate another broodje haring from a store in Nieuwmarkt, so comparing both I can confidently say that Haring & Zo was tastier. Highly recommended for a delicious, typically Dutch snack in the centre of Amsterdam.

Malý stánok, ktorý ponúka rôzne varianty rybacích sendvičov. Vyskúšali sme klasický sendvič s nakladaným haringom, cibuľkou a uhorkou. Bol absolútne vynikajúci. Haring bol mäkký, skvele dochutený, žemľa tiež mäkká a krásne čerstvá. Najradšej by sme vyskúšali všetky. Pán majiteľ je veľmi milý. Podľa nás sa jedná o najlepšie jedlo v meste. Určite odporúčame vyskúšať.

I got a sandwich with pickles and onion, and it was my favorite dish in Amsterdam. Very fresh and delicious. I was nervous for my American taste buds, but I was hooked after the first bite. If you are in Amsterdam please try it!

This small place does soup and salads. It offers a selection of half a dozen soups, some vegetarian, some vegan, some with meat. The two we tried were delicious. We shared a big bowl of various salads: also good. All offered at a fair price.

Pequeño quiosco de comida para llevar en el que ofrecen diferentes platos, entre ellos, el haring, plato estrella holandés. Tienes opción de pedirlo troceado o en forma de sándwich. Lo sirven con sus acompañantes tradicionales, es decir, con cebolla picada y pepinillos en vinagre. Parece un sitio bastante popular porque siempre que pasamos por allí había alguien pidiendo comida. Tanto holandeses como turistas. Además, para estar situado en un lugar súper turístico, tiene precios bastante razonables. Para ser honesto, lo compré por probar algo típico holandés pensando que lo acabaría tirando. Al final, todo lo contrario. Aunque la textura es un pelín correosa, es un pescado con un sabor suave y muy delicioso. Comerlo mezclando todos los ingredientes es una buenísima idea. La combinaciones de sabores y texturas lo hace perfecto. Si estás leyendo esto y no acabas de atrever a probarlo... Dale una oportunidad, a mi me encantó.
