Still a great place for good food. We've been going there happily for 10 years. The service and food preparation aren't quite at the same high level as a few years ago, but it's still a recommendation for Ameland.

We had a delicious meal, the plates were beautifully presented, and the atmosphere was lovely. This restaurant deserves a Michelin star. The Keizer Family

Disappointed. We had high expectations and looked forward to it based on a previous visit a few years ago and the reviews. The atmosphere is good, and the welcome is too. But the price-quality ratio is really out of balance now. The food is of good quality but the portions are very small. The intermediate course with sea bass was very tasty, but 4 cm of sea bass was very little. The regional cheese platter quickly transitioned from one Ameland cheese and a Frisian Tynjetaler to Tête de Moins and Auvergne Blue. A small carafe of tap water later turned out to cost 3 euros on the bill…. The wines were very average, and the staff really had no idea about them. They didn't get any further than a nice story about the wine. It is a beautiful restaurant; perhaps we were unlucky, but right now it is not recommended. In the low season, dining in two shifts might not be necessary and less sociable. During the late shift at 8 PM, the restaurant was far from full.

Fine dining. Great atmosphere. Well-rounded menu and superb service. Thank you for a wonderful evening. A clear recommendation for anyone on Ameland who wants to enjoy a very good meal away from the usual tourist traps!

What a lovely and special restaurant. This time we opted for the 5-course surprise menu. The nice thing is that none of it can be found on the à la carte menu, yet it truly surprises with beautiful, flavorful culinary delights. The dessert was perhaps a little too generous (there has to be something to criticize…). And a big thank you for a keeper on the table: the homemade rhubarb. Individuality makes something unique!

The food is always outstanding! So many interesting flavors on the plate at once... a delight! Unfortunately, at the end, there was a minor mishap with a young waitress who spilled a glass of water down her trousers, which then ran across the table and soaked the cushions. Since it took too long for the waitress to return with a cloth, I wiped the table myself with a napkin from the next table. Not a huge problem. But what happened next really annoyed us: We were told we were lucky it wasn't wine. We were expecting a small gesture of compensation, like an espresso or something similar, but in vain! Even when I pointed out this oversight to the waitress, remarking that this should be a necessary gesture in a good restaurant, and the two Dutch ladies at the next table nodded in agreement, NOTHING happened!!! 🤔 A shame, because this kind of courtesy is also part of a fine restaurant experience! I hope for improvements! I can still highly recommend the food!

If you visit Ameland, I would definitely recommend this restaurant. The food is exquisite, there are delicious wines on the menu, and the service is excellent. The restaurant has a very atmospheric ambiance, and you can also enjoy the beautiful and cozy terrace.

The highlight at the end! We had the culinary highlight of our last evening on the island. A fantastic dinner in a wonderful atmosphere. Very attentive service, superb cuisine...everything was more than just perfect... TOP!

Had a delicious meal: starter, Eel and Tuna; main course, Duck and Plaice fillet, a true sensation; for dessert, Blackberry ice cream and Coffee. Highly recommended. And we will certainly be back again.

Nice place with a pleasant atmosphere and friendly service. Unfortunately, the food was very disappointing. The plaice fillet was overcooked and therefore dry. The risotto resembled ordinary white rice with a slight beetroot flavour more than a real risotto. The side dishes were also blandly seasoned and far too overcooked. It is a shame, because for these prices you expect a significantly higher culinary standard. Hopefully, more attention will be paid to that.

We had a few drinks here one evening and decided to return the next day for dinner. This was absolutely a good choice. We had such a lovely evening here, with a super nice and hospitable hostess. This lady recognized us, despite the busyness of the previous day. She made a table for us even though we hadn't reserved and walked around with a friendly smile the whole time, while visibly working hard in between, and was very friendly in her communication. Rarely have I had such good service! The food was delicious with matching wines; the chef's menu. In short, a really pleasant experience with good food.

We had a good meal at Het Witte Paard on Ameland. We opted for the 4-course surprise menu, and it was well-balanced. What we really missed, though, especially at a restaurant in this category, were amuse-bouches served in between courses. That would have made the experience just a little more refined and complete. Or did we have too high expectations? The service was friendly and attentive, but sometimes a bit loud and informal in its approach. Occasionally, it seemed somewhat routine, with repeated questions. The young man stood out positively. The atmosphere of the old building is definitely a plus: full of character and cozy. It is noticeable, however, that it is a smaller space—with a full house, it became quite warm and crowded. Take off your jacket and it is manageable, but it does detract slightly from the tranquility at the table. All in all, a pleasant evening and high-quality food, with room for a bit more finesse in the service and experience.

A very good restaurant if you want to enjoy a nice meal. The atmosphere is great and the staff are young and very motivated. Beautifully portioned, delicious food. The dessert was delicious, gingerbread with ice cream and mandarin (I think), and should you be a fan of good jenever (😇), a wonderful selection of Zuijdam!

The food was fantastic. Absolutely delicious, so many tasty dishes on the menu, it was hard to choose. We'll definitely be back when we're on the island :)

I'm gluten-free, and they even had a gluten-free sandwich as a starter. That almost never happens, so I was really happy with this. We've been regular guests at "Het Witte Paard" in the past. We thought it was a gem on Ameland! Yesterday, it became clear to us that the shine has worn off considerably and the food has literally paled. A deer tartare umeboshi was riddled with edamame. The cod puree and sauce were tasty, but the scallops hadn't browned and therefore didn't look inviting. The pheasant main course also lacked a nice "baked" edge. The mashed potatoes were cold, and the oven-baked potatoes were too hard. According to the owner, they had "bite," and the puree was perfectly cooked at 60°C. The rhubarb and oven-baked potatoes didn't really complement the main course. If you want honest feedback, you also have to be able to handle (constructive) criticism. Incidentally, the staff was attentive.

The food was delicious, and the service was attentive and friendly. I definitely recommend it. The decor is intimate and cozy.

Yesterday we had a wonderful and enjoyable meal. We were with vegetarians, pescatarians, and omnivores, and every plate was a feast. Sometimes a vegetarian menu option can be a bit disappointing, but here every course (even without meat or fish) was fantastic. The wine pairing was delicious and reasonably priced. The service was very pleasant. If we ever visit Ameland again, we will definitely be back.

A fantastic welcome at a lovely restaurant. A cozy atmosphere and delicious food. The wines paired perfectly with the food, and the red wine was especially appreciated. The service was friendly and well-organized.

Roses wither, ships... The White Horse is housed in an old commander's house. The prices are steep, the portions are smaller, and the drink flows... well, seeps into the glasses. That's Dutch chic. In the UK, even metropolis London, wine glasses must be engraved with the 0.25 cl marking, and you're legally obligated to fill them to that mark. With the far-too-weak "espresso" (why do even quality restaurants have such shoddy coffee machines? And can't you adjust the strength?), I was given a small digestif for 8 euros from a 1-liter bottle that you can order online for 25 euros. I was dining alone. All other guests received an explanation of the service; I didn't. After the main course, I had the dessert menu close to the table, a sign that I wanted to order. Two staff members were in full view—they even looked my way, one with empty glasses in her hand, and didn't intervene. There were only three tables occupied, so you don't pre-stock the rest with glasses and cutlery for the next day if you see someone waiting!! A familiar face briefly emerged from the kitchen; she had been serving last year and knew exactly what to do. Such a shame. The tables were covered in sad, wilted roses in sad vases. That's just not right! The food was fine, the gravy too strong, the sweet potato puree just not right, and rhubarb compote (delicious though) and potatoes were served with everything, which is what a cafe should be. The main course arrived on a warmed plate, as it should be. The chairs were old; grandparents used to have them, and we were already getting them left and right in the 1970s as hand-me-downs. Nice, but in need of replacement. The napkins in a classy restaurant should be made of cloth (linen), not some nasty disposable fleece. Also a shame. Yes, they need to be washed and starched and put on an island... I sat at the table for over two and a half hours, partly due to the long wait. On the dessert menu this time was a Portuguese delicacy, if I'm not mistaken. €18.50. Don't do it, because last year I ordered a delicacy with five drinks from a distillery in Baarle-Nassau and 10 sloppy wedges of clove cheese, served in glasses the size of bottle caps. Only the latter, I could tell there was anything in it, because it was honey-colored. The menu said it cost €17.50 (OUTRAGEOUS), is that a scam? However, the receipt was also one euro more expensive! But then they hadn't charged for two glasses of white wine. (Back then, Groningen had a similar restaurant, Houdt van Eten, but with much more refined dishes and—yes—linen napkins, and at considerably lower prices, almost scandalously low for what I considered verging on Michelin-star quality.) The ceiling could also use a freshening up, because I don't know if the mocha brown color was ever painted that long ago. The lady who briefly came out of the kitchen is from Groningen and was an excellent hostess, so I'd say: high time for a breath of fresh air, just like outside. Don't think: oh, it's always packed anyway. But Het Witte Paard is still the best restaurant on Ameland. After three visits, I think I've seen enough. The menu had also remained the same. Off the menu, there was fish for over 38 euros. That's nerve. No way. The two glasses of red wine turned out to cost 17.90, but they didn't tell me that beforehand. That's downright rude and insanely expensive. Nine euros for a quarter glass??? From a bottle that might cost the same at wholesale, or at most double? You can get Primitivo wines from Puglia for 5 to 7 euros, because that's what it was.

Fantastic restaurant with friendly service and excellent food, Wadden menu. A delicious wine pairing was also included; it was fantastic. The cheese board for dessert was wonderful!

We thoroughly enjoyed the stylish ambiance in the historic building. The beautifully arranged floral arrangements immediately catch our eye. The surprise menu (3 courses) delighted us: it was a culinary adventure for the palate and a feast for the eyes. The accompanying wines were well-chosen and further enhanced the character of the individual dishes. High praise goes to the kitchen and the service. Highly recommended.

We were there with friends. Unfortunately, our quiet little dog 🐕 wasn't allowed inside. So we sat outside...it was quite chilly.... Some of us weren't entirely happy with the food. We also thought 4 slices of bread 🍞 were too few for 7 people and ordered a second portion (2 slices), which we didn't get. An appetizer from the meat menu was very flexible. We mentioned it, but it was ignored. A bit disappointing considering the pricing. We subsequently canceled our second reservation. A bit of a shame. We had more positive memories...

On Saturday, August 2nd, we dined at Restaurant Het Witte Paard on Ameland. We had a reservation for 5:30 PM and arrived a little after that time. The location is atmospheric, both inside and outside. We took a seat at the table and decided to order the Wadden Sea menu. To our surprise, we were immediately informed that the table was only available until 7:45 PM. When we asked why that would be a problem, we were told that the dishes would be served "very quickly." Alternatively, we could be moved outside halfway through the menu. This was unexpected and didn't feel like a warm welcome. Nevertheless, we decided—somewhat taken aback—to take the menu and accept the situation. Shortly afterward, a staff member pointed out that the limited table time would be "clearly stated." We don't understand why this was emphasized this way, but it felt unnecessarily condescending. The dishes did indeed come quickly, as announced. Unfortunately, we found the flavors bland and unexciting. Perhaps the restaurant's philosophy is to serve "honest flavors," but for us, it lacked character. We also found the wine and food pairings unbalanced: either the wine was too dominant, or the dish too mild. At the end of the meal, we were asked how we felt about the experience. We diplomatically replied that it was "okay," to avoid confrontation. We were then told that we didn't seem very enthusiastic, so—upon request—we gave honest feedback. What followed was a reaction that really surprised us: a man (possibly the owner or chef) argued with us that he had tasted everything during the mise en place and that we were "really wrong." It was at that moment that we decided to immediately ask for the bill and leave. A simple response like, "It's a shame it wasn't to your liking, we'll take it with us" would have sufficed. This gives guests the feeling that their opinion matters—whether you act on it or not. Instead, we felt our experience was being dismissed and dismissed. What could have been a pleasant evening ended with a bad feeling for us. We hope we don't encounter this gentleman again.

We eat there every holiday we spend here and have always been very impressed. Unfortunately, we couldn't eat there this year... Due to an allergy, we asked if it would be possible to skip the butter and cook with an alternative (e.g., olive oil). Unfortunately, that's not possible here, and we were turned away. It's a shame, because we always loved going to Witte Paard, but apparently things have changed.

Last Saturday, we had another delicious meal together at (in my opinion) the best restaurant on Ameland. The classic scampi-scallop-prawn risotto remains my favorite and comes highly recommended!

We recently dined at the restaurant. Unfortunately, we found the food a bit bland, while the prices were on the steep side. There was another couple dining that evening. When asked what they thought of the food, and they responded honestly, they said it wasn't good enough. What surprised us, and frankly, bothered us, was the owner's reaction. Instead of showing understanding, their feedback was dismissed with a comment that said they shouldn't complain because the owner thought it was good... I don't normally write reviews, but in this case, I felt it was important to share this.

What a delightful discovery this restaurant is! The menu makes it difficult to choose, as you'd almost want to choose three main courses and three appetizers. We had an excellent meal with a great house wine.

Actually a really cute restaurant and the food we ordered was quite good (Fish and bisque were superb) except for the Kids’ food… the Bolognese tasted like mashed baby food. However, the Service was inacceptable! Long waiting, unfriendly and even overcharged us! Would have revisited but not with this service…

Ate a very salty bisque. The staff had heard that before, we were told. It is remarkable that nothing was done about it. Fries arrived when the main course was almost finished, a pity. The standard side dishes did not go well with all the main courses. The food was otherwise tasty, but in the end we were a bit disappointed. I think we expected a bit more quality considering the prices and all the rave reviews.

Went for dinner with the 4 of us! Weekend on Ameland with friends! Were received very kindly. Ultimately opted for a 4-course surprise menu! One of us only had meat as he didn't eat fish. We drank two delicious bottles of wine. Good choice on the wine list. The food was delicious good portions! Service was great. Price-quality ratio top… Highly recommended! Good luck next season

I happened to pass by this restaurant and was immediately impressed by the appearance. After reading some positive reviews I decided to drop in. Unfortunately, our experience was somewhat disappointing. The service made some small mistakes, which is understandable, but the soup was way too salty. Fortunately, this was neatly taken off the bill. The wine, main course and dessert were delicious. All in all, my experience was a little less than I had hoped and I found the reviews a bit misleading.

Stayed in ameland for 4 nights and this was by far the best meal of the trip. I wish we went here sooner as I would have happily eaten here every day. We ordered the chefs menu and each course was delicious.

We were lucky to be able to reserve a table for Friday evening at short notice and had a wonderful evening at Witte Paard. The food is delicious, very attractively prepared and the portions are large enough. The service was great - absolute recommendation for a special evening.

Delicious food on the terrace near the village tower of Nes. The quality of the dishes is of a high level while the price is almost comparable to other restaurants in the village. The service is smooth and knows how things should be done. The only downside is that only a bowl of rhubarb was served as a vegetable, but we would love to come back here again.

It had been a while since we had been here and after our excellent experiences earlier, we were curious whether they could live up to our expectations again at Het Witte Paard. Well.....they could! A fantastic 5-course menu with delicious and surprising dishes with an enthusiastic explanation by the service and/or chefs, excellent wine suggestions and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. Despite the fact that it was very busy, with all tables occupied both inside and outside, the service (which worked very hard) was "spot-on" and everyone received more than enough attention. I was there spontaneously in the evening and was able to enjoy my menu outside... Very good service, extremely friendly and attentive and then the kitchen 🤩 - WOW! There really is a master chef at the stove - perfectly coordinated, the flavors wonderfully and creatively put together and very attractively presented. There is also a very diverse and suitable wine list. You have to come back ❣️

Remains the best restaurant in Ameland! Ate for the 25th time, the menu has a small variation each time, the toppers such as the strawberry rhubarb always remain. Really highly recommended.

We walked in here without any expectations, but we walked out again after dinner with full enthusiasm. What a good restaurant where everything is just right. Been there since I was a child and more than 25 years later it is still a regular stop every time during our time on Ameland. Delicious food, friendly staff and a small old charming place. Highly recommended!

Stopped by again today, February 22, 2024. Kitchen is still at a high level. Price-performance is absolutely OK. How do you say in Dutch? "Een anrader"

Today, December 9, we had a fantastic meal in the Witte Paard restaurant. The service was very good. Fast, friendly and attentive. The food itself was perfect. Always beautifully presented, good in taste and simply very tasty. On the inside, the restaurant resembles a cozy living room in an old Amelander whaling house. We will definitely come back!

Besteld een 4 gangen menu. Ik had zelf een hogere verwachting van het eten. Maar ja dat is persoonlijk. Net niet spannend genoeg. Smaken combinatie vond ik zelf niet altijd correct bij elkaar passen alles bij elkaar genomen te vlak. Vette rode jus met een vrij vlak stukje sucadevlees. Venkel te zout. En voor het dessert was de combinatie ver te zoeken. Duindoorn met citroenijs ? Voor binnen vond ik het te druk.

Pracht locatie met heerlijke gerechten. Service prima. Een echte aanrader als je op Ameland bent.

Alles in Vollendung, Service geht kaum besser, Essen sehr gut, gerade frischer Fisch, Lady Steak könnte mehr Lady Like sein, Wein 🍷 unglaublich lecker, unbedingt vorher reservieren

Heerlijk eten in een prachtige ambiance!

Leuk restaurant, heel gezellig, super personeel. Eten was ook goed. Vond zelf de Coquilles niet zo bijzonder (meer rozijnen dan coquilles en kon de Ximez niet echt proeven). Eendenlever was echt geweldig. Zo zo zo lekker!!! De Iberico was een beetje te doorbakken, maar wel heel smakelijk. De soepjes waren verrukkuluk, net zoals de zeetong, schol en kabeljauw. En echt een heel gezellig restaurant.
