Very authentic and beautiful bar. The aroma of the ‘Aepjien bier’ beer was very nice. You should definitely come and try it. You can take great photos inside.

A good place to have a few beers surrounded by stuffed animals, which were forms of payment in the last century. It has two floors but no terrace. A 5-minute walk from the central station.

A quaint little bar in the northern center of the city that has captured my heart. Here you'll find, among other things, the house beer, the taste of which I will never forget. In't Aepjen is a unique bar that I visit every time I'm in Amsterdam, and I highly recommend a short stop and a taste.

If you are in Amsterdam - you must visit this bar! It is located in one of the oldest wooden buildings that did not burn down during the great fire. Very tasty liqueurs. And what is most important - a bartender with a great sense of humor 😁

A bit over the top 🙈. Come in and are completely ignored. Bartender was too busy with a guest at the bar. Not even a look or a nod. He probably thought 2 tourists who will never come again. Well indeed we will never come again.

We came because it is supposed to be a traditional, famous place “brown café”.. The man in charge is very unpleasant, unkind and has no patience talking and attending customers… definitely do not recommend the place.. unless you want to be treated badly.

My favourite bar in the world but, what do I know? Spent many an afternoon sitting at ‘my ‘ table near the book shelf , looking at the stuffed cat and, just drinking and dreaming of what had gone on in that place in times past. 4 or 5 hours there and then down the street of Zeedijk to choose where to eat my dinner. The local crowd come in at 5pm and in winter they tie a dish towel on the door knob to keep the door open to let the condensation out. A tiny place and you should stay away so I can enjoy it , in peace!

From now on, my favorite bar. Unbeatable history, the gentleman behind the bar is a real professional, and there is also something to drink. Aepjen house beer is perhaps the best in Amsterdam. And Genever is not bad either. Get higher numbers of shirts and good luck going forward.

A very famous and old bar in Amsterdam. Famous for his collection of monkeys. (The story is very interesting). Good atmosphere, service from the bartender (and maybe owner) is not friendly, but the place is definitely worth it. Very delicious beer.

One of my favorite pubs in the world. Welcoming, atmospheric, with hundreds of years of history and a great modern beer list. A wonderful place to while away an hour or two.

Stopped in to try Genever and some local beer. Barman was pleasant and helpful, recommending a nice Genever to try. Sampled the Aepjen ale, which was sweet and tasted really nice. Will definitely go again next time I'm in Amsterdam.

Stopped in for a drink. Very small and cozy. If you are claustrophobic you shouldn't go. Great history. Original wood building from 1500s I believe. Monkeys everywhere. The name of the pub translates to Monkeys. 😊

From Amsterdam's historic bars. Rustic atmosphere, "all the money" bartender, very good prices. "Aepjen" is well worth it, a beer of their own production with mild fruit notes that is one of the best IRAs I've had in my (still) short life.

Small and very charming place. Excellent beer. We only stopped for a drink after a long walk, but they also serve some snacks.

During Hartjesdag, the bars on the Zeedijk use a 'deposit system' for plastic glasses. Very good. The bartender of 'In 't Aepjen' did not participate in this. My first drink (and deposit on the glass) was from them. I went back before leaving the festivities but he refused to return my deposit. At another bar they did that without a problem.

Unique place with fascinating décor and furniture. It’s a small place, so would be difficult to find a seat during the rush hours. My husband ordered the house beer and absolutely loved it. The barman is quiet friendly and even gave a souvenir postcard to our son.

I like to come here when I'm in Amsterdam. Small but so cute cafe. Oldest inn in Amsterdam. Ever heard of "Stayed in the Monkey"? That comes from here. (If you had been here you would be covered in fleas) 🤣 Not now😃

A bar with a history of around 600 years. It was used as an inn in the early periods. Incoming sailors made their payments with monkeys, and over time, it became known as the monkey bar. The sign is a little hard to read, but the location shows the right place. Be sure to stop by and have a beer.

Another cool and weird place with a nice story behind it (or not) is In't Aepjen. Supposedly, after the almost destruction of the city, only two buildings remained standing. Officially, it's one, but you know, stories. Well, In't Aepjen is one of those places remaining and one of the oldest bars in the city. The story goes that sailors were out of cash when they returned from expeditions. Still, they brought back exotic things, like animals and whatnot. The owner of In't Aepjen started charging in a particular way: IN MONKEYS! The lad saw monkeys coming from other continents and went out of his mind. The sailors paid for their beer or genever in the currency of the moment, the monkey and everybody were happy. In't Aepjen means "in the monkeys", and the bar is nothing more and nothing less than that, a place with monkeys of all sizes and colours. Ask for the house beer, and you will always remember it.

Really cool bar with an eclectic and tiny/cozy interior. high, high ceilings and walls full of oddities and knick knacks, and of course a fairly extensive bar. We were recommended to try their housemade beer (only available in their pib!) and I'm glad I did - I don't even like beer in general that much but it was delicious.

Authentic pub. Recommended. Pleasant ambience. Mixed audience: local residents, all types of guests 35+ Quite a lot of foreign tourists. Cosy, good service and excellent wine and beer. Also try Van Wees's gin. Aged from 5 to 25 years.

Very good pub with professional and hospitable service. Quite small but this adds to the convivial atmosphere. You might have to wait for seats but people come and go pretty quickly. Lots of history here too (sailors could trade monkeys for goods, beer etc. if they ran out of money apparently). Not the best music but definitely a fine selection of beer. Losing a star as I think they could further diversify the variety on offer e.g. only one (bottled) stout on offer, which was out of stock, no sours/saisons, limited selection of fruit beer. Still, would definitely return next time we are in town for the history and atmosphere.

One of our Dutch colleagues insisted we should stop for late drinks on Sunday in this odd pub. It is definitely one of the weirdly styled places to drink in almost spooky. It is quite small so we were lucky to find places. The beer and drink choice were good and reasonable. Excellent bar staff kept us engaged throughout the evening. Definitely a "cool" (is that still used?) Place and good fun if you can grab a place. As for the history of "oldest wooden house" and "survivor of the big fire"...I wouldn't place a bet on it. Still... I'd love to trop here again on my next trip to Amsterdam.

Historisk pub, en av de eldste i Amsterdam. Navnet, In the Monkeys, kommer av at her kunne seilere betale med eksotiske dyr i tidligere tider, gjerne aper. Apene ble tatt vare på i en stor hage, som idag er Amsterdam Zoo. Liten, rikt innredet, og god stemning. Ble endel øl her. Anbefales.

As old as a really old Dutch saying: in de aap gelogeerd zijn. And next to being a goldie oldie, it's a fab pub to visit! History and booze entwines perfectly together with excellent service and wonderful banter. :-D

If you're a tourist please pay attention to say hello and have a small talk with the bartender: this is a small and warm bar. The interior is a "brown café" - wood and old decorations. They have a great variety of Genever and it's worth it to try.
