Good food and big portion sizes. Overall the meal was nice, although the waitress was quite unenthusiastic and not that friendly.

I really hope the restaurant will read my review here so maybe it could help them to improve. The restaurant needs a general cleaning, as you can see, there is so much dusts and spider webs. I told the person with me not to move the fake plants because the dust would fall to our food. He said “maybe the dirt is part of the Indonesian vibe” which I doubt 😭 We ordered normal tea, Indonesian tea was good but my partner had normal tea and they really just hand over a tea from the grocery 😭 We waited 20mins for that, and we waited another 30 mins for our food. The presentation wasn’t really good , like they just dropped the utensils in the food (I took a picture of the food before we even touch it ) I didn’t understand there are so many spoons 😂 Fish wasn’t fresh , my beef dish wasn’t the worst tho. I’m not sure if I would come back. And btw they only accept cash as payment, young waitresses, speaks good English . But they look like they are force to work there. She was annoyed by the guy in front talking so loud . And even remove his shirt inside the Restaurant and walked around. 😂

We wanted to try a restaurant outside the city center, we had dinner and tried a few vegetarian dishes, they tasted great! Staff was friendly and helpful, recommended!

First time ordering food from Betawi, but unfortunately also the last. The lemper was clearly sour on the inside, as if it was no longer fresh. The fried banana was black on the inside and, moreover, very greasy. The quality of the other dishes was also disappointing. My partner ate noodles with spicy beans and beef and subsequently became ill several times, ending up over the toilet. Naturally, we cannot say with certainty exactly what caused this, but the timing is certainly striking. All in all, a very disappointing experience. Based on the quality of the food and the complaints afterwards, we will not order here again.

Delivery was very fast, but that is about all there is to say. The food had a musty smell; it seems like a whole bucket of spices went into it. Everything tasted the same; even the chicken satay made me gag. In the end, all three meals were thrown away. Once and never again.

Got some food to go hoping it would be good, but instead I got a really bad food poisoning. The food didn’t taste good and was also without any spices or flavour. Food tasted old. The staff were friendly.

I used to go to Betawi many many times about 7-10 years ago, and the taste was just soo amazing and delicious. I kept a fond memory of the cuisine and the nice owner who would always greet us nicely and warmly. Today, after years of the not eating there, I decided to go back again with great enthusiasm and excitement with two family members who I was soo eager to make them discover this delicious restaurant. Upon arrival, the first thing I noticed is the young girls working as waitresses. They were polite, but no welcoming or whatsoever. The first thing I got told is « for here or to go » without a hello. After I said that I would like to eat here, one of the waitresses told us that we can only pay cash (not surprised because this was the case already years ago). We first ordered drinks, and all of the three drinks arrived at different times, each 5min interval. One of the drinks (pink with coconut milk) was very watery and not tasty so we had so send it back and ordered a different drink instead. After ordering the food, we waited about an hour (while there was only 2 other tables in the restaurant). First the appetizers came, which was okay in taste but nothing exceptional. After more waiting, the main course finally arrived. The waitresses who barely knew the menu or what they were serving, couldn’t even differentiate the dishes and what they were. We also got 2 portions of noodles when we only ordered one. We send one back. At first glance; the food was smelling nice and looking good, as I remembered from back in the days. But upon the first bite, disappointment struck. The noodles were overcooked and mushy; which we send back to the kitchen and was canceled from our bill. The chicken satay was delicious; like I remembered it tasted. For the two other dishes (one with fish and one with beef), it was extremely disappointing. Some part of the food was cold and the other warm, which I suspect they microwaved. I wouldn’t say it was inedible but it was definitely not tasty. I told the owner that I was disappointed and I can’t find the flavors that I was expecting from years ago, he told me nothing changed so it was probably that it was not to my liking. We satisfied ourselves with the white rice and the chicken satay. Furthermore, my aunt ordered a coffee to end this terrible experience. When the coffee came, she poured her creamer in the coffee and noticed a weird taste. She checked the date of the milk and it was expired from Janurary 2025 (which means more than a year ago)….. I would of never thought to put such a bad review to this restaurant which I soo greatly loved going years ago and kept such a great memory of… but unfortunately I feel like it was really necessary for people to know what you can expect. I think the restaurant should think of renewing the menu which hasn’t changed since the last time I came, and focus more on quality than quantity. I also think it would make the experience better to have motivated friendly waitresses, who knows the menu and what they are serving ….. also the owner was smoking inside while serving customers and food which questions hygienic dimensions…. We got a 2€ discount on the bill while being unsatisfied with more than half of it. sadly will not go back and definitely do not recommend anymore …. I will simply keep the good memory I had years ago.

Disgraceful place, to be avoided

On entering the first thing we were Told that they accept only cash. No greeting nothing. Then after we sat down at our table and waited for almost 15 plus minutes no one bothered to even hand us menus or check in on us. On two occasions the wait staff came literally within 2 cms of our table but refused to even look at us. On one occasion we even called out to her but she pretended to not hear us and walked past us. Needless to say we just got up and left. PATHETIC…

Really very bad quality food. As rich as anything I have ever eaten, but entirely without subtlety - just sweetness and oil. Nearly inedible. Beware the meals for two - the listed prices are per person - wish I'd known that sooner! And to top it off, it's cash only - I'll be avoiding this place as surely as they avoid taxes. Summary: very dodgy!

We were here because of the location close to the Mozaïek hall — we wanted to grab a bite to eat before the concert. The food was barely edible. The salad contained stale cucumbers. The cola was diluted, and even the plain water had a strange taste. I ordered beef, but received a strange, mushy mass that looked completely unappetizing. I managed to pull out a few pieces of tasteless meat with great difficulty. After visiting this restaurant, I wanted to rinse my mouth as soon as possible. This was the first and, immediately, the last time.

Cockroaches, cockroaches, cockroaches. The entire heating element of the entire refrigerated food display case is infested with cockroaches. This is absolutely unacceptable. I was waiting for almost an hour for some food to be prepared, and I sat down on the bench across from the refrigerated display case when I noticed the creatures crawling across the floor. Then I saw that the entire display case was full. I immediately left, almost puking. This is absolutely unacceptable. I should have known when they said you couldn't pay by card. Absolutely don't go there, you could get seriously ill. I really don't understand why they don't do anything about it; it's so easily treated. Ugh.

Bad, stale, and floury takeout food, tasted like days-old leftovers. The owner kept harping on after reheating, so it was practically cold when I got home. Paying by card wasn't an option either. Way too expensive for what it was...

After almost 10y in Amsterdam, this is my personal favourite Indonesian. Food is solid all round, but I come back for the vibe: the owner is a real character, and the decor is killer - how many restaurants do you know with their own water feature? Just don’t forget to bring cash

Some delicious rendang with nasi, deffo coming again

​On our first day in Amsterdam, we went to this restaurant and were very impressed. The food was tasty, the staff were friendly and the restaurant decor is lovely. The portions are generous and we didn't finish all the food. The friendly staff packed it all up for us and gave us a fresh new pack of rice to take with us. 😊

The food is unfortunately of mediocre quality. There are so many better warungs in the West. The owner is friendly, but the cash-only policy is a bit annoying.

Unfortunately won't come again - Long waiting time, only got food after 1h - Young Staff playing around and chat loudly - Soft drinks was served without gas, apparently from a big bottle - Tofu and beans were spoiled, after complaints it was taken out from the bill.

Waiting time: 1 hour After reminder about the food: quickly get some food from the counter warm it up and serve within 2 minutes. The man was yelling something to the staff. Food: some of food were good, but some were spoiled, tofu was spoiled, vegetables was spoiled, beef stew was like a desert, dried out sauce and beef. While we were there we experienced a lot of complaints from other tables as well. Spoiled food. So we were not the only ones. They don't accept any card, they accept only cash, feels like a black business too. Sneaky man sends everybody to withdraw cash from nearest supermarket. Probably won't go back ever again.

Food took over one hour to arrive despite the restaurant being nearly empty. When it finally did arrive, one dish of vegetables was very old and tasted off nearing rotten and the beef rendang dish was so dry it seemed like leftover microwaved food. Very disappointing experience and sad to say the worst I've had in Amsterdam.

It's unfortunate as we were hoping to eat nice Indonesian food. We had to wait nearly an hour for our food with only 2 other tables before us. The beef rendang was so dry. In the vegetarian dish, the tofu and the long beans had gone spoiled. Another table had the same exact issue as us. Would not recommend this place unfortunately. Owner did not charge for the vegetarian dish after we told him it would not be fair to charge.

I ate here with a group, and all the food was placed on one side of the table (if I'm being polite). The rice and various dishes were really cold and inedible. Unfortunately, I didn't eat the meat or chicken, which was on the other side. The owner only seems to care about his customers. Disappointing.

Worst Indonesian food in Amsterdam. Don't be fooled by the delicious smells; appearances can be deceiving. Long wait times for takeout (30-45 minutes are not uncommon), even though the food is already prepared in the display case and only needs to be heated up. You often get the wrong order, too. The kitchen is mainly staffed by young women who do nothing but loiter. The owner shouts orders at his staff throughout the restaurant, but this doesn't seem to make much difference. Meals are often dry and contain few vegetables. Payment is cash only. It's a shame, because the selection is varied, and some dishes you won't find elsewhere.

Enjoy the delicious Indonesian food. The atmosphere is fantastic.

Dining in a backyard in Amsterdam on a gorgeous summer day is, as impossible as it may seem, one of Betawi's greatest attractions. The charismatic chef dispatches a gargantuan rijstaffel from the open-plan kitchen, while charming, candid waiters wait on the tables outside. Halfway between a typical Mediterranean bistro terrace, the Far East, and the Netherlands, Betawi is an exceptional culinary experience.

Always great and feels like a hidden gem. Could sit in the back garden. Vega nasi rames special eaten. Then you really get everything with rice. Great snacking.

Very strange approach. All prices do not apply because e.g. dish prices = + EUR. 2,— ( 🤷‍♂️ ). I was about to order and suddenly they said: “you can only pay cash, right?!”. We live in 2025 so I'll get something to eat somewhere else!…

Hidden gem of the Bolo! Meanwhile the 4th time that we come here with great pleasure to eat. Fantastic own atmosphere with a strange but very charming owner. The service is young and inexperienced and that creates a cozy and relaxed environment that you have to love (a little patience pays off ;)). With every visit we enjoy the food again!! Definitely worth cycling, walking or driving for!!

Very disappointing experience. Years ago we had a few good meals at Betawi. This weekend with 5 people, because we had to go to a show in the area, we went again with high expectations, but this turned out to be a big disappointment. Very young staff without experience, were more interested in their mobile phones than in the guests. One was busy answering messages, the other was watching a video with sound, so that we could listen in. In addition, they shouted their questions to the owner who was standing behind the counter in the takeaway area and he then shouted the answer back. One of the girls got a good telling off from the "boss" to which she shouted back. We really thought where are the hidden cameras hanging, this can't be real We had to wait a very long time for our order so that, even though we had told them that the show would start at 8:30 PM (we were already in the restaurant before 7:00 PM), we didn't even have fifteen minutes to eat it. Had ordered bihun (mihoen) but got bami that was the same because the strings were also thin said owner Frankie. Btw that is certainly not the case if you have gluten intolerance and if Indo's really know the difference between bami and bihun, The bami tasted terrible, was very sweet and sticky. In my opinion it was made from the packets of Migoreng from Indomie (that's what it tasted like) but then with shrimp on top. Vegetable dish was also disappointing and babi pangang of pork belly was very dry. We gave a tip with a heavy heart because we didn't have time to wait for the change.

People don't go there! Old leftovers are mixed with (fresh) ones. Portions far too small and little meat/chicken/fish. Soft drinks watered down and tasteless. Loud shouting from the owner to the inexperienced serving teenagers. Far too expensive bill. No atmosphere. Difficult and expensive parking also in the evening. Should not be called an Indonesian restaurant! Time to have it checked. Wasted money!

Super restaurant with delicious food and takeaway menu. The owner is an eccentric person with a big mouth but his heart is in the right place! I love it; super hospitable, straightforward and easy to chat with. As for paying, there is an ATM on the other side of the road, so make sure you pin in advance because it is cash only. And he's right.

Our food was very tasty. The owner and conditions were super friendly. The prices were absolutely fine. The ambience is a bit old, but it didn't bother us during our visit. I can still highly recommend a visit.

Unapologetically not sorry: One of the worst dinner experiences we've ever had. The issues: - We arrived around 8:00 PM, with only two tables occupied at the time. - We ordered the mixed rice (Nasi Rames), which should have been quick since the proteins and vegetables were already prepared and only needed reheating. Yet, we waited 1 HOUR to be served, despite there being just three occupied tables. - About 40 minutes into the wait, the servers were eating satay (meat skewers) nearby while we were still waiting for our food. By then, we had only been served our drinks. - The food itself was disappointing—overly sweet, over-seasoned, and with a stale, old taste. While we understand reheated food, this was unacceptable. As fans of Indonesian cuisine, we found it an unfair representation of Betawi food, doing a disservice to the Betawi community. We couldn’t even finish it. - When we shared our complaints with the owner, his only response was, "there were many people"—despite the restaurant being nearly empty. Summary: - Excessively long wait for what should have been quick-to-serve food. - Servers ate near us while we waited for an hour. - Food tasted overly sweet, stale, and poorly seasoned. - The owner gave a dismissive and inadequate response to our concerns. Disclaimer: This feedback is not an attack on Betawi cuisine or the restaurant but a sincere attempt to highlight the poor service we experienced. We hope the management takes this as constructive criticism and works toward improving their service and food quality.

Wonderful old-fashioned Amsterdam restaurant with a top owner full of humor, truly Amsterdam, this man has been there for almost 40 years so that says enough! So those who are negative about this, go to someone else, I have been coming there every week for years. fun and the food is great!

Very poor acoustics, and in combination with the screaming owner who bickered with his children/staff, it was very unpleasant. We had difficulty hearing each other and heard everything from all corners of the restaurant. Extensive menu, food was tasty and traditional. Fatty, but strong in taste. Took a very long time... They can improve a lot, hope they do!

I like the quirky and traditional Dutch Indonesian restaurant where you can sit, however I feel the Soerabaja and especially Batavia tastes better. Moreover, there is way more veggies with them (and less noodles/rice). Price is only 2 euros lower at ~11,50 euro for betawi rames. (Solo asli is around the same level). Is it an idea to get the Batavia cook to collab with betawi? Keep the atmosphere of traditional Dutch Indonesian restaurant of betawi

I don't often post such a negative review, but I also don't often have such a bad experience: picked up bami rames special with satay chicken and a separate portion of satay goat. The satays were stiff and chewy. The bami rames had an abundance of herbs (as if it had sprouted) and sweet soy sauce. Everything tasted the same. The noodles were caked. This is the first time I have thrown away food, it's a real shame. Not recommended. In itself it seems like a nice family restaurant, but the owner was shouty and was mainly concerned with himself and the family. And “the pin is broken” is an old trick in the catering industry to receive cash. I don't come here anymore.

It was an experience...as if I was coming home...didn't have to fly for 16 hours...I'm from The Hague myself and would without a doubt immediately take the train if I wanted to eat Indonesian food the way it should be again. The owner and his family are very warm and friendly people and in the back of the garden you forget that you are in the Netherlands🙏🫶🌞😎❤️

Picked up yesterday and wanted a rames menu, at other places you are used to choosing the vegetables and meats you want in your rames, but the man behind the counter made the choice for me. He just asked if I wanted chicken or beef. When I got home I noticed that I had been given beef and a little bit of chicken, even though I had indicated that I wanted chicken. The taste was also not good and the rice was very soggy, I normally love Indonesian food, but this was really not tasty. Not for me anymore.

I cannot recommend this restaurant. The food was much spicier than indicated and everything tasted overly sweet. The service wasn't good either; we saw a waitress busy making phone calls while serving the food. In addition, I thought the food was way too expensive for what we got. The atmosphere was also very loud, partly due to the owner and staff. Normally I never write reviews, but this was a really negative experience. To make matters worse, the owner said that the PIN machine was broken and that we could only pay in cash. After reading other reviews, it seems that the ATM machine is "broken" more often. Not recommended.

I was just passing by and suddenly detected the dishes of this Indonesian food from the street. While I was struggling to choose, they told me that paying only by cash is available. I just had 5 euros in cash! The man told me not to be worried and asked a few basic questions (like if I’m vegetarian, rice or vegtables, beef or chicken, hot or mikd, curry or soy sauce) and served this flavorful meal for me! It was the best 5 euro I’ve ever spend😁

Just finished eating here and it was fabulous! So many great foods to taste; we ordered veggie soup, tripe soup, goat satay and gadogado. Each item was spectacular in its own way with wonderful spices and flavors, cooked to perfection! Must go to!!!

We decided to explore #Indonesian #cusine. Betawi in #amsterdam is a family run place with exceptionally friendly owner. They went above and beyond explaining the dishes. We truly enjoyed the flavor - mild #curry and very specific spices. Chicken and fish were tender and delicious. We would love to come back!

First things first. The most important thing in a restaurant is the food. The food was AMAZING (I am greek, I know my food, this was amazing food). I didn't expect it to be so delicious. Now that that's out of the way, the place felt totally unprofessional: -they only took cash -the waiter touched the silverware by the part that goes into your mouth -there were only 2 tables and yet they brought us something the other table ordered -they had a cat around the kitchen -an old lady (probobly the cook) went in and out of the kitchen shouting -the food took quite a while to be ready It was like you are in a home and a family is serving you at the best of their abilities (which is probably what it is). Many things to improve. BUT, I would TOTALLY go again and I would SUGGEST this restaurant since the food we tried was that good.

Friendly, delicious, not too expensive

The waiter was unfamiliar with the menu and our order was not taken correctly. We had to spend time explaining to the owner that we did not order some of the food that was on the receipt, and the owner came across as arrogant. We waited for an hour for our main course to arrive despite the restaurant being only half full, and the food was average at best. Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant.

Het eten was lekker zoals altijd, eerlijk is eerlijk. Alleen schrokken wij behoorlijk van de prijs. Ik ging met gemengde gevoelens de deur uit met 49,5 euro lichter in de portemonee. Ik kon mij toen al niet voorstellen dat het zo duur was voor wat wij haalden. Thuisgekomen waren wij wel teleurgesteld, de bakjes waren half gevuld, en al waren zij gevuld, dan was het nog te duur na wat uitrekenen, en dat zelfs met de 2,- extra per portie. Jammer, ik snap best dat de tijden na corona en dat alles duurder is, er dingen veranderen, maar dit, nee dit is buiten proportie.

Eten is prima, maar die eigenaar spoort niet . Echt onbeschoft en communiceert niet normaal. Zeer klantonvriendelijk . Accepteren alleen cash geld . Even rekening mee houden als je iets gaat bestellen.
