Indonesisch Restaurant Betawi in Landlust

Bad, stale, and floury takeout food, tasted like days-old leftovers. The owner kept harping on after reheating, so it was practically cold when I got home. Paying by card wasn't an option either. Way too expensive for what it was...

After almost 10y in Amsterdam, this is my personal favourite Indonesian. Food is solid all round, but I come back for the vibe: the owner is a real character, and the decor is killer - how many restaurants do you know with their own water feature? Just don’t forget to bring cash

​On our first day in Amsterdam, we went to this restaurant and were very impressed. The food was tasty, the staff were friendly and the restaurant decor is lovely. The portions are generous and we didn't finish all the food. The friendly staff packed it all up for us and gave us a fresh new pack of rice to take with us. 😊

The food is unfortunately of mediocre quality. There are so many better warungs in the West. The owner is friendly, but the cash-only policy is a bit annoying.

Unfortunately won't come again - Long waiting time, only got food after 1h - Young Staff playing around and chat loudly - Soft drinks was served without gas, apparently from a big bottle - Tofu and beans were spoiled, after complaints it was taken out from the bill.

Waiting time: 1 hour After reminder about the food: quickly get some food from the counter warm it up and serve within 2 minutes. The man was yelling something to the staff. Food: some of food were good, but some were spoiled, tofu was spoiled, vegetables was spoiled, beef stew was like a desert, dried out sauce and beef. While we were there we experienced a lot of complaints from other tables as well. Spoiled food. So we were not the only ones. They don't accept any card, they accept only cash, feels like a black business too. Sneaky man sends everybody to withdraw cash from nearest supermarket. Probably won't go back ever again.

Food took over one hour to arrive despite the restaurant being nearly empty. When it finally did arrive, one dish of vegetables was very old and tasted off nearing rotten and the beef rendang dish was so dry it seemed like leftover microwaved food. Very disappointing experience and sad to say the worst I've had in Amsterdam.

It's unfortunate as we were hoping to eat nice Indonesian food. We had to wait nearly an hour for our food with only 2 other tables before us. The beef rendang was so dry. In the vegetarian dish, the tofu and the long beans had gone spoiled. Another table had the same exact issue as us. Would not recommend this place unfortunately. Owner did not charge for the vegetarian dish after we told him it would not be fair to charge.

I ate here with a group, and all the food was placed on one side of the table (if I'm being polite). The rice and various dishes were really cold and inedible. Unfortunately, I didn't eat the meat or chicken, which was on the other side. The owner only seems to care about his customers. Disappointing.

Worst Indonesian food in Amsterdam. Don't be fooled by the delicious smells; appearances can be deceiving. Long wait times for takeout (30-45 minutes are not uncommon), even though the food is already prepared in the display case and only needs to be heated up. You often get the wrong order, too. The kitchen is mainly staffed by young women who do nothing but loiter. The owner shouts orders at his staff throughout the restaurant, but this doesn't seem to make much difference. Meals are often dry and contain few vegetables. Payment is cash only. It's a shame, because the selection is varied, and some dishes you won't find elsewhere.

Dining in a backyard in Amsterdam on a gorgeous summer day is, as impossible as it may seem, one of Betawi's greatest attractions. The charismatic chef dispatches a gargantuan rijstaffel from the open-plan kitchen, while charming, candid waiters wait on the tables outside. Halfway between a typical Mediterranean bistro terrace, the Far East, and the Netherlands, Betawi is an exceptional culinary experience.

Always great and feels like a hidden gem. Could sit in the back garden. Vega nasi rames special eaten. Then you really get everything with rice. Great snacking.

Very strange approach. All prices do not apply because e.g. dish prices = + EUR. 2,— ( 🤷‍♂️ ). I was about to order and suddenly they said: “you can only pay cash, right?!”. We live in 2025 so I'll get something to eat somewhere else!…

Hidden gem of the Bolo! Meanwhile the 4th time that we come here with great pleasure to eat. Fantastic own atmosphere with a strange but very charming owner. The service is young and inexperienced and that creates a cozy and relaxed environment that you have to love (a little patience pays off ;)). With every visit we enjoy the food again!! Definitely worth cycling, walking or driving for!!

Children in service, a disgrace....

Very disappointing experience. Years ago we had a few good meals at Betawi. This weekend with 5 people, because we had to go to a show in the area, we went again with high expectations, but this turned out to be a big disappointment. Very young staff without experience, were more interested in their mobile phones than in the guests. One was busy answering messages, the other was watching a video with sound, so that we could listen in. In addition, they shouted their questions to the owner who was standing behind the counter in the takeaway area and he then shouted the answer back. One of the girls got a good telling off from the "boss" to which she shouted back. We really thought where are the hidden cameras hanging, this can't be real We had to wait a very long time for our order so that, even though we had told them that the show would start at 8:30 PM (we were already in the restaurant before 7:00 PM), we didn't even have fifteen minutes to eat it. Had ordered bihun (mihoen) but got bami that was the same because the strings were also thin said owner Frankie. Btw that is certainly not the case if you have gluten intolerance and if Indo's really know the difference between bami and bihun, The bami tasted terrible, was very sweet and sticky. In my opinion it was made from the packets of Migoreng from Indomie (that's what it tasted like) but then with shrimp on top. Vegetable dish was also disappointing and babi pangang of pork belly was very dry. We gave a tip with a heavy heart because we didn't have time to wait for the change.

People don't go there! Old leftovers are mixed with (fresh) ones. Portions far too small and little meat/chicken/fish. Soft drinks watered down and tasteless. Loud shouting from the owner to the inexperienced serving teenagers. Far too expensive bill. No atmosphere. Difficult and expensive parking also in the evening. Should not be called an Indonesian restaurant! Time to have it checked. Wasted money!

Screaming and loud talking from the restaurant owner. Serviced by teenagers aged around 16, only paying attention to mobile phones and giggling. Food was bad, tasteless and reheated way too often. Payment by card is not possible, everything must be paid in cash.

Super restaurant with delicious food and takeaway menu. The owner is an eccentric person with a big mouth but his heart is in the right place! I love it; super hospitable, straightforward and easy to chat with. As for paying, there is an ATM on the other side of the road, so make sure you pin in advance because it is cash only. And he's right.

Our food was very tasty. The owner and conditions were super friendly. The prices were absolutely fine. The ambience is a bit old, but it didn't bother us during our visit. I can still highly recommend a visit.

Unapologetically not sorry: One of the worst dinner experiences we've ever had. The issues: - We arrived around 8:00 PM, with only two tables occupied at the time. - We ordered the mixed rice (Nasi Rames), which should have been quick since the proteins and vegetables were already prepared and only needed reheating. Yet, we waited 1 HOUR to be served, despite there being just three occupied tables. - About 40 minutes into the wait, the servers were eating satay (meat skewers) nearby while we were still waiting for our food. By then, we had only been served our drinks. - The food itself was disappointing—overly sweet, over-seasoned, and with a stale, old taste. While we understand reheated food, this was unacceptable. As fans of Indonesian cuisine, we found it an unfair representation of Betawi food, doing a disservice to the Betawi community. We couldn’t even finish it. - When we shared our complaints with the owner, his only response was, "there were many people"—despite the restaurant being nearly empty. Summary: - Excessively long wait for what should have been quick-to-serve food. - Servers ate near us while we waited for an hour. - Food tasted overly sweet, stale, and poorly seasoned. - The owner gave a dismissive and inadequate response to our concerns. Disclaimer: This feedback is not an attack on Betawi cuisine or the restaurant but a sincere attempt to highlight the poor service we experienced. We hope the management takes this as constructive criticism and works toward improving their service and food quality.

It’s a simple place but very good Indonesian food and service from the owner is very personal. Can’t pay with card, cash only (there’s an ATM close by)

Wonderful old-fashioned Amsterdam restaurant with a top owner full of humor, truly Amsterdam, this man has been there for almost 40 years so that says enough! So those who are negative about this, go to someone else, I have been coming there every week for years. fun and the food is great!

Very poor acoustics, and in combination with the screaming owner who bickered with his children/staff, it was very unpleasant. We had difficulty hearing each other and heard everything from all corners of the restaurant. Extensive menu, food was tasty and traditional. Fatty, but strong in taste. Took a very long time... They can improve a lot, hope they do!

Went for take-away for the first time today and it was absolutely delicious

I like the quirky and traditional Dutch Indonesian restaurant where you can sit, however I feel the Soerabaja and especially Batavia tastes better. Moreover, there is way more veggies with them (and less noodles/rice). Price is only 2 euros lower at ~11,50 euro for betawi rames. (Solo asli is around the same level). Is it an idea to get the Batavia cook to collab with betawi? Keep the atmosphere of traditional Dutch Indonesian restaurant of betawi

tough satay, lots of dry meat. Souto soup tasteless. Long wait and annoying owner with a very loud voice. Was a big disappointment. Never coming here again

The seller did not give a choice with the Rames special (I now also read in previous reviews). Prices differ from website: Asks 25% more (!) and cash only. Food very salty.

That tall boy was really a king, great service and a good haircut. The only downside I have is that we saw too little of him. Great place, best tent in Amsterdam.

I don't often post such a negative review, but I also don't often have such a bad experience: picked up bami rames special with satay chicken and a separate portion of satay goat. The satays were stiff and chewy. The bami rames had an abundance of herbs (as if it had sprouted) and sweet soy sauce. Everything tasted the same. The noodles were caked. This is the first time I have thrown away food, it's a real shame. Not recommended. In itself it seems like a nice family restaurant, but the owner was shouty and was mainly concerned with himself and the family. And “the pin is broken” is an old trick in the catering industry to receive cash. I don't come here anymore.

It was an experience...as if I was coming home...didn't have to fly for 16 hours...I'm from The Hague myself and would without a doubt immediately take the train if I wanted to eat Indonesian food the way it should be again. The owner and his family are very warm and friendly people and in the back of the garden you forget that you are in the Netherlands🙏🫶🌞😎❤️

Order nasi here all the time never disappoints

Picked up yesterday and wanted a rames menu, at other places you are used to choosing the vegetables and meats you want in your rames, but the man behind the counter made the choice for me. He just asked if I wanted chicken or beef. When I got home I noticed that I had been given beef and a little bit of chicken, even though I had indicated that I wanted chicken. The taste was also not good and the rice was very soggy, I normally love Indonesian food, but this was really not tasty. Not for me anymore.

I cannot recommend this restaurant. The food was much spicier than indicated and everything tasted overly sweet. The service wasn't good either; we saw a waitress busy making phone calls while serving the food. In addition, I thought the food was way too expensive for what we got. The atmosphere was also very loud, partly due to the owner and staff. Normally I never write reviews, but this was a really negative experience. To make matters worse, the owner said that the PIN machine was broken and that we could only pay in cash. After reading other reviews, it seems that the ATM machine is "broken" more often. Not recommended.

Great cuisine, like coming home. I have been away from Amsterdam for more than 7 years now, but I keep coming back for this Indonesian food.

I was just passing by and suddenly detected the dishes of this Indonesian food from the street. While I was struggling to choose, they told me that paying only by cash is available. I just had 5 euros in cash! The man told me not to be worried and asked a few basic questions (like if I’m vegetarian, rice or vegtables, beef or chicken, hot or mikd, curry or soy sauce) and served this flavorful meal for me! It was the best 5 euro I’ve ever spend😁

Een van de beste Indonesische restaurants in Amsterdam. Goede prijs/kwaliteit en bij mooi weer een terras in de tuin. Soms wel wat lang wachten op het eten maar dan weet je dat het druk en vers is.

Just finished eating here and it was fabulous! So many great foods to taste; we ordered veggie soup, tripe soup, goat satay and gadogado. Each item was spectacular in its own way with wonderful spices and flavors, cooked to perfection! Must go to!!!

We decided to explore #Indonesian #cusine. Betawi in #amsterdam is a family run place with exceptionally friendly owner. They went above and beyond explaining the dishes. We truly enjoyed the flavor - mild #curry and very specific spices. Chicken and fish were tender and delicious. We would love to come back!

First things first. The most important thing in a restaurant is the food. The food was AMAZING (I am greek, I know my food, this was amazing food). I didn't expect it to be so delicious. Now that that's out of the way, the place felt totally unprofessional: -they only took cash -the waiter touched the silverware by the part that goes into your mouth -there were only 2 tables and yet they brought us something the other table ordered -they had a cat around the kitchen -an old lady (probobly the cook) went in and out of the kitchen shouting -the food took quite a while to be ready It was like you are in a home and a family is serving you at the best of their abilities (which is probably what it is). Many things to improve. BUT, I would TOTALLY go again and I would SUGGEST this restaurant since the food we tried was that good.

Friendly, delicious, not too expensive

The waiter was unfamiliar with the menu and our order was not taken correctly. We had to spend time explaining to the owner that we did not order some of the food that was on the receipt, and the owner came across as arrogant. We waited for an hour for our main course to arrive despite the restaurant being only half full, and the food was average at best. Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant.

Het eten was lekker zoals altijd, eerlijk is eerlijk. Alleen schrokken wij behoorlijk van de prijs. Ik ging met gemengde gevoelens de deur uit met 49,5 euro lichter in de portemonee. Ik kon mij toen al niet voorstellen dat het zo duur was voor wat wij haalden. Thuisgekomen waren wij wel teleurgesteld, de bakjes waren half gevuld, en al waren zij gevuld, dan was het nog te duur na wat uitrekenen, en dat zelfs met de 2,- extra per portie. Jammer, ik snap best dat de tijden na corona en dat alles duurder is, er dingen veranderen, maar dit, nee dit is buiten proportie.

Eten is prima, maar die eigenaar spoort niet . Echt onbeschoft en communiceert niet normaal. Zeer klantonvriendelijk . Accepteren alleen cash geld . Even rekening mee houden als je iets gaat bestellen.

I was so hungry and suddenly craving for indonesian food after a long flight from indonesia so i went here.. and it satisfy my appetite.. its just perfect dinner.. the nasi rames is good, but beware the portion is big, i think it can be shared by 2 ppl, lucky i was so hungry i finished it myself.. 😁 Easy to find location, and the bus stop is just around. Price was acceptable.
