Super delicious Surinamese food and reasonably easy to reach by bus.

It is incredible how delicious the food was, and how nice the people are. It's a shame they are going on a long vacation (for six months starting Aug 13, 2026). I can't wait to Feb 14, 2027. Enjoy yourselves! ❣️

I picked up 2 containers of telo bakeljouw. The fish was completely full of bones. One bone is acceptable, but so many bones is not normal. Both containers were full of bones. Unfortunately, the cassava was also inedible; it was soggy from being heated in the microwave. I called and the gentleman wanted to make a new one, but I don't think that makes sense since it is the same bakeljouw, I assume. Never again.

The Rotis were delicious again, as always. However, this time there was no plastic wrap under the lids of the food containers, causing the oil to leak out. That was a shame. Hopefully there will be next time.

Delicious Surinamese food. Portions are good. Even a small portion of roti with chicken was too much for me. I found the saoto soup a bit small considering the amount of chicken.

Indian food at its best... Referred by the local jeweler Baldev! Received excellent help and advice from a very friendly man. They are one of the few places that serves Heri Heri, my favorite Surinamese dish. Flavorful, nicely spiced, and the portions are more than sufficient.

I placed an order today, but upon arriving home, it turned out the order had been recorded incorrectly: I had ordered nasi, but received white rice. Additionally, one of the dishes looked completely unappetizing, and after tasting it, the quality and taste were also very disappointing. (See photo below) When I called to report this politely, I was spoken to in a very unprofessional and rude manner. Instead of offering a solution, I was told that I had to pay extra if I still wanted nasi, and the same for another dish; 0% customer friendliness. Subsequently, an argument ensued in which it was claimed that I had placed the order incorrectly, which was absolutely not the case. During a second phone call to provide feedback on the way of communicating, I was again addressed in a very unfriendly tone, and eventually, they even hung up in my face. Naturally, it is not about those few euros for me, but about the principle and the way someone is spoken to. This is absolutely not how you should treat customers. For me, this is a reason never to order here again.

Nasi-Bami chicken was delicious. Fresh ingredients, the pickles taste delicious. Curious about the fried banana! Service is super good. What a great comeback! Love it! I've been coming here for 18 years!

Came to Amsterdam 4 years ago and had the best meal from Lalla Rookh. Came back this year and it's just as delicious! Big portions and big flavour.

The best Surinamese food in Amsterdam East. The roti plate is freshly made for you. They also offer Surinamese dishes you won't find elsewhere, like "bb met r" (a type of "bb" with an "r"), like my mother makes. I hope we can eat here again soon, and not just get takeout.

A very tasty Surinamese takeout restaurant. We came all the way from Soest because of a nice video on Instagram by ChefvandeLeq. Note! They no longer have a restaurant, only takeout! The restaurant burned down. It's definitely delicious Surinamese food, and definitely worth it. Everything is homemade and very fresh. But I had an even better Surinamese meal at restaurant New Draver. I got this tip from a customer who was ordering at the same time as me. The homemade sambal is fantastic, and so is the food! Sick, expensive place. A small dish, thrown in a container. We're talking takeout, right? All for around twenty euros. Sick. Completely crazy. A restaurant is even cheaper. We're talking takeout. Small roti for 14 euros. It's pathetic.

Picked up some delicious takeout. They have many options for vegans because they don't use eggs in other products. Just ask the owner what's available.

Not cheap, but very tasty and the portions are generous. The chicken roti and stuffed bara tempeh were excellent.

I wonder if you actually get what you order here. I'm very good at recognizing flavors, and I ordered goat roti, but it tasted exactly the same as lamb. So I won't be going back; I don't like games.

I got roti on Tuesday, and it was disgusting. A huge roti with actual roti soaked in oil. The roti was filled with yellow peas, which was absolutely tasteless, and the peas were heavily curry-laced. The vegetarian roti was made with frozen long beans, curried chicken and potatoes, and tempeh with tomato. I love my life and will never order food from here again. Simply disgusting. It's delicious for the Dutch, of course. As an Indian, I've never eaten such a horrible meal; everything ended up in the trash. A BAD...

So happy that Lalla Rookh is open again for takeout. The special roti chicken fillet, bara, and chicken satay are just as delicious as ever! Finger-licking good.

Delicious food, well filled and lots of variety!

This spot was highly recommended while on holiday from Dallas, TX. It was delicious!!! The host was personable and kind. The other patrons from the community gave excellent recommendations: We got the roti with chicken and lamb, and added the mashed pumpkin as suggested. ALL YUMMY!!! I would highly recommend and return if ever in Amsterdam again (fingers crossed).

The best food I have had in Amsterdam. I only spoke english but the guy at the counter was so helpful and recommended incredible dishes. We had the chicken roti, peanut chicken with rice, and the tomato shrimp with rice. Will be going back before I leave.

Just got Roti here for the first time, large portions and really tasty, we will definitely come back!

The food was meh, too much essence in the coconut crepes and the bojo had too little cassava in it, so the structure was not as it should be. The roti pancake was good, but the taste of the filling could have been better. It was especially expensive for what it was, €71 for 4 rotis, 2 coconut crepes and a piece of bojo. Next time I'll get roti from Roopram.

This is a takeaway business; So in terms of atmosphere you don't have much to look for there. What you come here for is the tastiest roti (and here they have goat!) with the freshest homemade roti skin you have ever had. The sambel is not normally tasty. Truly an “OG” food spot. Highly recommended.

I absolutely love these people's food, girl daughter? is super friendly who works there. It's just a shame that they charge quite a lot for a loose roti plate or roti goat. A bowl of terie also costs way too much. But I wish them to recover after the fire. Too bad I can't get this every week because it's so pricey.

Ordered her heri and roti. It tasted like here, but the way it looked is not how you should present it. It looked like stew. Very unfortunate. We had 4 rotis. Not cheap, but very salty. Not worth repeating. Previously the quality was better.

Today I got rotis again after a long time. The rotis were DELICIOUS. We brought 3 different peppers, all delicious. Missed this quality recently. Also the size of the roti (plate) itself, where you normally buy an extra roti (plate) at other places, you do not have to do that here. Highly recommended for those who have not yet eaten here. Also very friendly staff!

Vandaag 30 nov. 2025 een doks roti 22 euro gekocht weinig doks vlees gekregen voor de prijs, kerrie smaak was niet zoals de authentiek sur. Smaak voorheen was het zeer goed Roti plat was ok. Niet voor herhaling vatbaar!

They're open again and I'm happy. Picked up tonight and the Moksi Metie was delicious again.

Before the fire it was an excellent thing. Now it has plummeted considerably. The taste of the food is gone. You order by telephone on time and you still have to wait half an hour before the food is ready

We are so happy that they are open again! I haven't found better veggie roti anywhere in the city. And the roti plates are also delicious and fresh!

Have been getting food from this delicious restaurant for years and with complete satisfaction. Recently got roti bakkeljauw again for the first time. When we arrived home, the roti plate had been forgotten. Called and sat on hold and finally after 5 minutes I was forgotten. Hung up and got into the car. Lalla Rookh is in East, I live in North. So not happy at all. In the meantime, my girlfriend called and the line was still busy, which made sense because she had forgotten about us. Eventually the recording was made and initially it was denied that the roti plate had been forgotten. As if it would be fun to get back in your car and drive from north to east for a free roti plate. There was no excuse on the phone, but it was stated that compensation would be forthcoming. Upon arrival it was indicated that it was clear what I came for. Still haven't received an apology, but I did get my roti plate.... and a box of cornstarch cookies! That was the compensation for the annoyance and extra drive down for an already pricey roti. To forget is human, but the handling was far from customer-friendly. Shame.

I forgot how good they are. For me the best roti in Amsterdam! So much flavor and of course the plate that is freshly made to order. Portions are ok. Don't wait any longer and go here (recommended: roti chicken fillet, roti goat (spicy) and baka banana with satay sauce)!

Sodeju! This is the tastiest Surinamese food I have ever had. It really tastes like you got takeaway from a star restaurant. Not normal. It may seem a bit expensive, but the portions are super large (and extremely tasty!). Delicious vegan options, meat will probably also be delicious for those who like it.

Open again after 1.5 years, very much missed. The whole family thoroughly enjoyed the tastiest roti in the Netherlands! A bit of a long wait, but that was to be expected this opening weekend. Then you get very fresh roti plates!

Great that you are open again, but there is a lot of garlic in the food. We had three different dishes and in all three dishes the garlic was very dominant, so take advantage of this. Kind regards, Rob

Na de brand in 2023 zijn wij lange tijd gesloten geweest. Vanaf vrijdag 1 november zijn wij weer geopend. 7 dagen per week van 12.00 tot 22.00

Lalla Rookh has reopened from Friday November 1 and we are open again 7 days a week from 12:00 to 22:00

The vegetarian roti here is the best in all of Amsterdam. I hope they open again soon because I miss the food! Eating on site was always very relaxed, friendly service.

Lalla Rookh is al ja-ren ons vast afhaaladres. Nee, was; want na een brand voorjaar 2023 is Lalla Rookh niet meer. Althans, het pand is, januari 2024, nog altijd leeg. Wat jammer, want we hebben tot nu toe geen alternatief gevonden dat net zo lekker Surinaams maakt als hier. Weet iemand of en wanneer Lala Rookh weer open gaat? Dank, Rob van Burik

Dear people, unfortunately we were hit by a major fire in the kitchen on Friday night. Fortunately, no one was injured and everyone is in good health. Given the start of the fire, we will be closed for a few months. But we will be back and hope to see you all again by then.

Always comforting soup, great roti, delicious pom sandwich.

Toen ik mijn zus aanbood om met een Knorr wereldgerecht Roti te maken had ze een beter idee, Roti halen bij de beste Surinaamse toko van Amsterdam. Ze had geen woord gelogen. Dit is serieus de lekkerste Roti die ik ooit gegeten heb. Royale porties en erg grote Roti pannenkoeken. Kan niet wachten om hier weer heen te gaan. Erg aardige mensen ook.

The food was good and the portions were big. I ordered the shrimp roti and I was glad that I ordered the small portion since I barely finished it. The others in my family ordered the lamb roti, fish roti, and the vegetarian roti. We ordered the fried plantains with peanut sauce as a starter. Everyone likes what they ordered. The service was spotty. The menu was in Dutch so we used Google translate. The nice lady everyone wrote about in other reviews was nowhere to be found. The bar tender also was the waiter. He also did not take out American Express, we also had Visa and Mastercard but he told us that he wanted cash. He took credit cards from the locals. This is why I didn’t give this place a five star rating.

Uitstekende roti! Ivm werk hadden we wat haast en daar werd uit uitstekend rekening mee gehouden. Qua aankleding mag het iets gezelliger. De baas betaalde dus over de prijzen kan ik weinig zeggen.

Great Surinamese food and a nice place to enjoy your meal seated (proper tables and chairs) They have a spicy and a non-spicy option for tello bakkeljauw.

Verandering van spijs doet eten, dus eens een nieuwe Chinees/Surinaams proberen, 4,4 sterren dus dat moet wel goedkomen. Eenmaal binnen, afhaal is erg langzaam en zit ook totaal geen lijn in. Stevige prijs voor een kleine portie moksi meti, wellicht staat daar dan hoge kwaliteit tegenover? Helaas, komt meer in de buurt van magnetron maaltijd dan afhaal/restaurant. Groenten/kouseband verschrompeld. Miniscule stukjes worst, kip etc. en de kleine bakjes ook nog eens karig gevuld. Melige bami. Enige pluspunt was 't zuur. Dit alles geeft de stevige prijs een extra bittere nasmaak.

Op advies van een collega vanuit Deventer speciaal hier heen gereden. Als vooraf de pindasoep genomen. Als pindasoep een plaatje in de dikke van dalen zou hebben nou dan mag deze erbij. Pinda soep zoals het ooit bedoelt is heerlijk heerlijk heerlijk. Vervolgens Roti kip besteld ook deze is was heerlijk om je vingers bij af te likken. Bediening is zeer vriendelijk. Ook andere reviews gelezen maar herken de negatieve reviews niet. Ik durf deze tent bij iedereen aan te raden en zal dat ook doen bij deze. We komen zeker terug 👍

Zoooooo ontzettend lekker, ik zou het hele menu kunnen opeten.

Superlekker en een leuk restaurant. De mensen zijn vriendelijk en behulpzaam. Maar een klein minpuntje, kijk af en toe of er iemand binnengekomen is en wacht om geholpen te worden. Dat duurde net even te lang. Al kun je niet direct geholpen worden, laat even merken dat je iemand hebt opgemerkt. 'ik kom zo bij u' of zoiets. Maar verder een prima eetgelegenheid.

Nice portions, not more than nice food.

Ik heb 3 favoriete restaurants. 2 er van bevinden zich op loopafstand van mijn huis. Lalla Rookh is met stip mijn lievelings ondanks de 87 km enkele reis die ik er voor af leg. Niet alleen vanwege het heerlijke eten maar ook omdat ik me er thuis voel. Zonder uitzondering, zijn de tientallen gasten die ik heb geïntroduceerd onder de indruk van de roti's, pom en andere Surinaamse klassiekers.

Ruime keuze aan gerechten maar we komen hier toch echt voor de heerlijke roti, geserveerd met een glimlach! Was weer erg lekker!
