Cozy locale with the sweetest owner ever. I visited in the morning and asked for a regular, oat latte. Barista knew what she was doing and made an excellent drink. As i finished my drink i was checking out what beans to buy home and the owner kindly helped me pick out some beans thats worthy to try. We had a lovely conversation and overall, what a nice experience for someone visiting amsterdam for the first time! I highly recommend Monks Coffee Roasters, especially as a coffee enthusiast like myself. I will be back soon!

As an American who moved to Amsterdam, I am constantly on the lookout for coffee places that sell real cold brew, not an iced americano (or a cup of espresso with an ice cube on the side 🤣). Monks is the real deal, they even have multiple blends of cold brew that rotate every few days, and the one I tried was some of the best cold brew I’ve had anywhere!

I really wanted to like this place, but my visit was not pleasant. The service from the man behind the counter felt unwelcoming and a bit rude, which set a negative tone right away. The environment was also very chaotic—there were several dogs barking at the same time and kids running, jumping, and screaming, making it almost impossible to have a conversation. Tables are placed extremely close to each other, so there’s no sense of personal space, and when I sat down, my table was dirty, full of crumbs, and sticky, which is not acceptable in a café setting. Unfortunately, with the combination of poor service, noise, and lack of cleanliness, I don’t think I’ll be coming back. I hope the management takes this feedback seriously, because the place has potential if these issues are addressed.

Update 2025: I don't know what happened to Monks. Oatmilk cappuccino was not what I saw in earlier review. It's disappointing...

Simply amazing cortado! Great atmosphere and staff. Seems that the owner is also always on place and talks with people which is very nice.

Cappuccino was perfect, have been travelling Europe for nearly 3 weeks and this has been by far the best cappuccino I’ve had.

I didn’t expect the food size would be that big!😍 though usually I don’t eat cheese, it was delicious and I ate it all. The service is very warm, another good spot for grabbing a coffee, reading a book and have a homemade food😊

I had such a great experience at Monks! From the moment I walked in, I felt very welcomed — the service was warm, friendly, and genuine. The coffee was absolutely delicious, and I really enjoyed the atmosphere. I’m especially excited to try their beans from China, which shows how thoughtfully they select their offerings. A wonderful spot that I highly recommend to anyone who loves great coffee and a welcoming vibe!

Great coffee shop for coffee lovers! Delicious coffee. My husband had the batch brew (Brazilian) and I had the flat white, both very good! I've tried coffee at many places, both in the Netherlands and abroad, and this one really stood out. Definitely worth a try.

The food was incredibly delicious. I had the ham and cheese toastie, and the sauce was like a kind of mustard and was super tasty. The restaurant has a very nice, casual decor and very relaxing music. My favorite was the wall with the various stars on it. The setting was also super nice and sweet. I highly recommend Monks Cafe, and I definitely want to come back.

Excellent coffee and a great vibe. I especially loved their creative take on the pornstar martini — they turned it into a delicious cake! Bonus points for the adorable wall filled with dog photos — such a warm and personal touch.

Just wow, probably one of the best coffees I have ever tasted. When I tasted the coffee, I started smiling so just for you to imagine how good it was :) Super friendly staff, I can only recommend this for everyone. Nice and cozy space, separated laptop and non-laptop sections. In my opinion this is worth visiting every day ❤️

Lovely spot, very cosy and has character. We attended a barista workshop with our team at work - Patrick was very patient and explained everything. He never dismissed any of our many questions nor did he try to sell us things. Got some great tips that I'm going to try out at home! Will be back with my partner and dog as it's also very dog friendly!

A coffee place with a feminine touch situated in the middle of Amsterdam. It has a quote from T. S. Eliot claiming he measured his life in coffee spoons. This coffee shop deserves a thousand spoons. I asked for a Caffe Latte, which was well done, and a pastry. I don't remember the name, but they described it as banana cake without the banana. Congratulations.

We had a nice Chai Latte with some pastries and sweets. The service was really kind, they recommended to try the Pea milk and it was really delicious. The environment is cozy and I appreciate that there is actually space to sit down (rare in Amsterdam cafes)

Coffee was ok! Though my experience was shadowed as I was honestly disappointed to find out that the savory breakfast options shown in all their menus photos and instagram are only available on weekends. After biking 20 minutes to get here on a Monday, all they had were pastries. Just a heads up—don’t be misled by the pictures! 😭😭😭 We tried the cinnamon bun but it was a little soggy.

Great discovery! Super nice vibe with all the dogs pictures. Amazing and friendly service. Rare to find places that make their own chai which was very good. Plant-based milk available and I was able to get the avo toast without feta but adding bacon - it was delicious. Definitely worth to try

Patrick and staff are very friendly. Coffee was excellent. Had brunch also, it was delicious and served quickly.

I didn't find their service very friendly. Clearly, it is not a place to bring your laptop. They should rather clearly inform clients about their (implicit) no-laptop policy than keep clients crammed in a corner while the whole place is empty. I felt like empty tables were more important than actual clients. Not coming back.

Nice atmosphere where you can enjoy a cup of delicious coffee as well as a nice conversation with the barista. They warmly welcome you once you step in the coffee shop. Also, the barista is very keen to share their recommendations on coffee. The most importantly, the coffee is delicious with a reasonable price 😋 if you are looking for a daily coffee bag, here’s the place for you! In terms of the quality and the environment, it’s a good place to keep for a casual meeting with friends or a place to cool down in the city ☺️

I drove 40 minutes specially to visit this place and I really was not disappointed.. I tried the Colombian and the Mexican beans it is from another world.. Also my wife and son had the Turkish eggs which they believe it was extraordinary.. Best coffee in Amsterdam..

We were here for the Coffee Appreciation course and it was an all around great experience. The owner, Patrick, put a lot of effort into the design. He was able to give us a lot of knowledge about coffee. Even though the course is a little more expensive, we got a lot out of it and even got our own coffee beans. Definitely worth a visit for coffee lovers and those who want to become one! We will definitely come back on our next trip to Amsterdam.

I went here for a Barista course - it was run by Patrick, the founder, and his patience, knowledge, humour and passion for his craft made it a wonderful experience! Would recommend for both people looking to acquire or hone industry skills, or who want a great experience/ evening activity. It's done with a small group so there's plenty of individual attention and room for questions, and of course plenty of attempts to get better at the whole process...

A great way to start the day, with options for those with a sweet tooth or a savory craving. I ordered the Turkish Eggs and was not disappointed.

This café is mentioned in several articles about the best coffee spots to work from in Amsterdam. However, there is only a small laptop friendly zone with 3 uncomfortable barstools. Laptops are not allowed on the rest of the tables. Also good to know: from Monday until Thursday they only serve toasties for lunch (no regular lunch menu available). Good coffee though.

strangely milky americano with a peculiarly large amount of coffee grinds in it To reply to the owner: I am aware of the curse of customers leaving bad reviews for the wrong locations. Unfortunately that is not what happened here. You policy may not be to put milk and coffee grinds in the drink when customers order an americano, but that is what your baristas put in mine when i was there. I remember it distinctly because I was so excited to go, and so very disappointed with the whole experience. The reason I did not walk back to the shop and complain was because the staff who were working at the time all seemed exhausted, stressed and distracted. Although there were not many customers in the shop at the time, I imagined that they had had a very busy morning and didn't need the trouble. I also left a three star rating instead of one star, because I have a lot of respect for the difficulties of running a business. We all make mistakes. It's more of a mystery for me. I can understand how grinds end up in coffee - if the barista doesn't keep the floor of the grinder clean (which can happen when the rush of customers never ends) then grinds can stick to the portafilter spouts. But the milk was so bizarre I just thought to mention it in the review so you could review your practices. In any case it was not my intention to give you a bad review. I would want to visit more than once before doing that with a coffee shop. But Google knew I had researched your location for days, asked for directions and followed directions there, and gps-located me in your shop. Which is why google prompted me to leave a review. So I am sorry to tell you bad news, but your shop most definately served me a milky americano full of coffee grinds. Sorry! Lots of love!!

What a nice place for a delicious cup of coffee and a beautiful lunch. We ate the pancakes, among other things, and these are without a doubt the best we have ever eaten.

We walked in here and were able to find a table for 4 on a Saturday. I had a Wu Tang; scrambled eggs, avocado, caramelised onions, bacon, two large pancakes with butter, and blueberry sauce. It was a delicious and very filling breakfast. Especially the pancakes were pretty good.

Great place to grab a brunch. We were lucky enough not to have to wait for a table, which is rare on a Sunday. Staff are very friendly and welcoming. The food was very tasty and fresh. Poached eggs were perfect (I am fussy about my eggs) They have a cite dog of the week wall, so next time we will return with our pugs

Terrible experience this morning. Even though there were only 2 other customers who had already been served, I was completely ignored, that is, not even coming to my table to take my order (for coffee and food). One employee was rearranging cakes, the other one was literally doing nothing. So after 15 minutes I left. Fortunately, I discovered there is excellent coffee and food just 20 meters away.

Second time and I plan to come again! Coffee quality is one of the best I’ve had in AMS! Atmosphere is cozy, welcoming and warm. The food and baking goods are delicious 🤤 They have a dedicated area for people working remotely like myself. The owner is very friendly! I love that he remembers faces so it makes you feel more at home. You can sense that with the regulars who walk in to grab a coffee and say hi, to the second timers like me 😀 A must when in AMS!

I recently attended a home-level barista course at Monks Coffee Roasters, and I had an amazing experience from beginning to end. The atmosphere and energy of the place (and people) are extraordinary, standing out even among the many cafes I've visited in Amsterdam. Patrick, the instructor, delivers the lesson in a very professional manner while ensuring it is calm, entertaining, and makes learning exciting. I learned so much from this course, both theoretically and practically. Patrick is not only extremely talented but also incredibly empathetic. I can't wait to start my next course. I hope everyone can experience this course, the delicious coffee, and/or the amazing place at Monks Coffee Roasters.

Good coffee. For real coffee lovers, there are also preparation methods such as the Aeropress available with different beans. Furthermore, a nice place to sit during breakfast/lunch. The sandwiches were fresh and so were the ingredients.

I bought two bags of Ethiopian coffee 'Bensa Sidama'. One bag was ground for me by the owner, for my girlfriend's espresso machine. I wanted to make filter coffee myself with the beans. The owner asked which machine my girlfriend has - the Sage Bambino, a common machine - and asked me to remember his grind setting so he could grind finer next time if necessary. Unfortunately, Monk's grind was not good: the coffee would not flow at all. Two hours later I was back at Monks, I carefully explained the problem and politely asked if I could return the coffee. 'What do you want me to do with it? I can't sell this and I'll just throw it in the bin.' Mr. Monks was very annoyed. I mentioned that I tried to make espresso twice with his grind and it didn't work. It is not unreasonable that I expect the correct grinding degree when I pay €12.50 for 250 grams of coffee at a specialty store. According to the owner, he used the standard grind setting for espresso, but that doesn't work for me, that's not his problem. Unfortunately, Monks couldn't explain to me what I was doing wrong. By the time I finally got my money back, Mr. Monks didn't even look at me again. 'Thank you, have a good day sir,' I said. Mr. Monks was silent in seven languages ​​and turned his back on me. A few days later I made filter coffee at home with the home-ground beans that I still had from this shop. The coffee is of good quality, but too expensive. If you want excellent Ethiopian coffee and have a brother dying from bad manners and corresponding yuppie stuff, then visit Kaffa Koffie on the Czaar Peterstraat.

Lovely snacks, coffee, and a cozy space with both indoor and outdoor seating. It comes with restrooms and WiFi too. The service was wonderful. I ordered some food and several drinks upon arrival, but there was a bit of a hitch—an older gentleman seemed quite bothered that I had a nearly empty cup from another shop. It was a little disappointing and uncomfortable, especially since I just didn’t want to waste it.

A great cafe with wonderful coffee and specialty coffees. You immediately notice that everything here revolves around the enjoyment of coffee: fresh beans, brewed hot... There are also delicious pastries and one or two snacks. The ambience is stylish, but not intrusive - as are the employees. Super friendly, very relaxed. Absolutely recommended for a nice coffee break.

Bad customer experience Obviously i didn't see the sign about laptops forbidden and there was a woman beside me working on paper, so It didn't occur to me that specifically laptops were forbidden.....the bad customer service comes from the way i have been approached by the waiter and the way he made me feel not welcome and with no chances to do what i had to do on that specific on moment my laptop after i ordered my drink. Sorry about the Door, I thought It was heavier when i pushed it. Still bad customer experience

Today we met a friend to catch up over a cup of coffee. Roughly chased out of the tent because we had a laptop on the table. Explained that it was available for as needed use due to service. Unfortunately it wasn't ok, which is understandable. Too bad we couldn't have a conversation about this.
