Papa Ali is a great option not only for Muslims looking for halal meat in Amsterdam, but also for anyone visiting who wants to experience Middle Eastern cuisine or Turkish dishes with a Middle Eastern twist. However, the place could use a bit of maintenance and cosmetic touch-ups. There are no issues with food hygiene, but it doesn't have the spotless, pristine walls you’d typically see in Turkish restaurants. The Egyptian owner is extremely warm and welcoming. The food is exceptionally delicious, in fact, it might be the tastiest Arab restaurant I've ever eaten at. On top of that, the value for money is great, with prices sitting below the Amsterdam average. In short, you get a delicious, clean, and halal meal at a very reasonable price. While writing the comment, I also got to practice English.

I came in on a Saturday evening, and was greeted with nothing but kindness, and received amazing food. Service was quick, and the food was just as amazing as it smelled walking in, no complaints at all. 10/10. Would come again next time I’m in town.

Everything's good. The portions aren't very large, but Papa Ali forgot to mention that the starter isn't free, it costs 4 euros – to me, that's a scam. Be careful with the drinks, as there's no price list, and as experience has shown, in many countries tourists are cheated on drinks. 😉

The staff was friendly, but the food was disappointing for the price. €15 for a poorly filled kebab plate, plus bread added without mentioning it would be charged separately (€1 each). Water is also not free. In the end, €40 for 2 people and we were still hungry afterwards. Feels more like a tourist trap than a good local spot.

Frankly, I was very disappointed with our experience. Upon arrival, they brought us bread without us asking for it, and at the end we discovered it was being charged for. This kind of practice really gives the impression that they're forcing things on customers to inflate the bill. As for the food, nothing exceptional; it was quite mediocre for the price. Based on the reviews, we expected much better, but for us, it was a bad experience.

Papa Ali runs the little cafe. He is a genial host. This is an older location and is a little run down. However the food was plentiful and tasted great. Pricing was excellent with a mixed grill of chicken, lamb and salads with chips only €20. Very homey.

A hidden gem in Amsterdam! We don’t usually visit the same restaurant twice when traveling, but we ate here 3 times. The food is super delicious, with high quality, and served fast. Their signature sauce is supper delicious we finished it first! The mixed grill and chicken meal were fantastic. The chicken has a unique, slightly sweet, and savory taste, and the kebab (kofta for Egyptians) is perfect. The atmosphere is cozy, and there is a clean restroom. It was great to see a diverse crowd of diners; it’s a perfect spot whether you are looking for Halal food or just an amazing meal. Plus, it’s the most affordable price we found in the city. Highly recommended!

Really disappointed by the manager's behavior

Food is really nice , also environment is good. But one thing is really weird is they charged two fizzi drinks 7 euros. I think it’s too much for the fizzy drinks. They should label the price for drink so that people will know before they put an order.

Generous portions, warm service

A bit delayed on this review but Papa Ali is amazing. In a city where late night food options are seriously lacking. On the last night of our vacation, absolutely starving and at almost 4am, Papa Ali was almost done closing up but saved the day. We obviously did takeaway, but Papa Ali prepared 2 delicious Shawarma plates and even gave us 2 warm cups of coffee while we waited. Not only was the food great, we just just blown away by his service and care for his customers. Not sure when I’ll be back in the Netherlands, but I’m sure that I will, and I’m sure Papa Ali will be one of the first stops (not at 4am 😅).

The mix grill was absolutely delicious, the chicken steak was juicy, and Papa Ali (actually I do not know if the person was indeed Papa Ali but let’s assume he was) was super super friendly. We were looking for a halal place near Amsterdam Centraal for an early dinner and kind of randomly googled it beforehand. The reviews were nice so we popped in and we were happy that we did! We also came in needing a place to pray and Papa Ali gave us a prayer mat to pray on the second floor. Thank you Papa Ali!

Authentic shawarma, including the 3 small bowls of different sauces that are already placed on the table. They are often homemade, like the onion sauce. Also stays open nice and late / until late. A much better alternative than the Döner Company at Central Station, although I am very happy with that one too; you can eat and drink all night long. Quite small, there are only 4 tables inside and the bar isn't big either.

The best Hala food. Haj Gamal is a super cheerful chef. Restaurant is almost full of visitors for his lovely meals. The prices is pretty lower than most in the area.

Went with my partner and ordered a falafel wrap and a shawarma wrap. When the food came out it was two shawarma wraps. I told the cook that the order was wrong and he told me that we ordered two shawarma. I’m vegetarian and i am certain i ordered falafel. I tried to reiterate that i ordered falafel and he corrected me again. I gave up and gave both shawarma to my partner. When the cashier noticed i was not eating he asked why and I told him it was because i don’t eat meat. He told me he can make me a falafel wrap for 10€. I told him that I had ordered a falafel to begin with and he brushed me off again. I am usually understanding because mistakes happen, but instead of attempting to fix the mistake he told me i was wrong and tried to get more money out of me. My partner was also disappointed in the food. He didn’t eat the second one because he did not like the Shawarma. I ended up eating down the street.

My boyfriend and I came to Amsterdam this weekend. Since we didn't know the city, we stumbled upon this delicious halal restaurant with excellent grilled meats. It's a calm and discreet place. I highly recommend it. The owner explained that he's been working there for 15 years and came from Egypt. He's a lovely man, may God protect him. Go for it without hesitation! (French people 🇩🇿🇫🇷🇲🇦)
