Ragù in Binnenstad-Zuid

We ate delicious fresh pasta; I ordered the tuna and peanut one. Although I couldn't eat the tuna (it was red and undercooked, unlike what I'm used to), the pasta and sauce were very good. We also really liked the tiramisu.

Sadly it used to be better before they decided to move to the new location… On 15 September, we called to order take away pizzas and pasta, the waitress on the phone was quite rude. We agreed to come pick them up in 15 minutes. When I arrived at the restaurant, I went into it and when the waitress saw me from a far she didn’t even say hello, looked me arrogantly up and down and said “come” after I had said “hello. I’m here to pick up an order :)”. So I followed her and she barely spoke. The whole interaction was just awkward and arrogant. I felt like I was doing HER a favor for ordering and paying food… There was another waiter (a guy) who actually said hello and smiled. Fast forward to our food, we had requested mushrooms on the Diavola pizza. They weren’t there and we had to call them again. She replied on the phone again and suggested we could get a free pizza next time. But the food wasn’t as good as it used to be… pizza was chewy and hard to cut, the meat in the pasta was super hard which is surprising for a Ragu… Not sure with all of this, specially the behavior of that waitress, that we will return. PS: If you had a bad day: don’t put your frustration on the clients ;)

Ragù is more than just an Italian restaurant: it's a corner of authentic Italian cuisine in the heart of Leiden. With every bite, your mind immediately wanders back to Italy. Finally, what can I say about the staff? Being welcomed by knowledgeable, professional, and extremely kind and helpful young men and women is not a given. In short, Ragù is a restaurant we highly recommend if you find yourself in Leiden. There is bug in the drink, we asked for a change, then we found out the drink was charged twice, without telling us in advance.

Five euros for a beer is quite pricey. Moreover, the knives were rather blunt, although the wait staff indicated that this was due to our unaccustomed use of them. Oh well... We did have a nice evening, though, but it could be better!

Food was good, but the waitress was really rude and unmannered. Only came by once to offer drinks. This definitely made the food less unenjoyable.

Unfortunately, the service detracts from the delicious food. The staff were curt and responded rather arrogantly to questions about the menu. Additionally, my portion of fusilli was clearly smaller than my partner's. When I politely pointed this out at the end, nothing was done about it. It's a shame, because the food is otherwise really top-notch.

Nice restaurant serving Italian food. The staff were kind. My pizza was good, but my boyfriend’s pizza wasn’t the one he had ordered. He asked for a white Diavola, but he received the regular version with tomato sauce instead. In the end, it wasn’t a problem for us. It was almost closing time, and we didn’t want to disturb the staff by asking for a new pizza. The pizza dough was soft and well made, and overall we enjoyed the food. I highly recommend making a reservation if you plan to visit at the weekend.

We returned because we were charmed by this imital Italian restaurant when it was still located in a small former flower shop 100 meters down the road, but we failed to feel at ease for even a moment in this atmosphere of a basement storage unit with pretentious "house rules" chalked on a blackboard on the wall, plus one dying plant and a warmthless welcome. The price-quality ratio of the food was excellent, however, so that made up for it somewhat, although a pepper mill on the table was really missing.

Finally ate a real Italian pizza again. This is how a pizza should be. Rarely have I eaten such a good pizza. The staff is friendly; as for the atmosphere, it could be a bit cozier and especially a bit cooler, because unfortunately there is no air conditioning.

A few days ago, I had dinner here with two friends, and we were genuinely impressed. The staff, mostly made up of young people, were incredibly attentive, welcoming, and genuinely friendly throughout the evening. Their enthusiasm and professionalism made us feel at home from the moment we arrived. What impressed us the most, however, was the pizza. The dough was exceptionally light and perfectly fermented: you could tell from its texture alone that it had undergone a long fermentation process. It was airy, delicate, and wonderfully digestible. In fact, I had absolutely no difficulty digesting it and slept perfectly that night, which is something I really appreciated. The pizza itself was a perfect interpretation of the Neapolitan style: soft and tender on top, yet with just the right amount of crispness on the bottom. Achieving that balance is not easy, but they did it perfectly. The quality of the ingredients was equally remarkable. It was clear that the products had been carefully selected and imported directly from Italy. I ordered the Napoli pizza, topped with delicious anchovies and a wonderfully flavorful buffalo burrata in the center. Every ingredient tasted fresh and authentic. Honestly, I struggle to remember the last time I had a pizza this good, even in Italy (and I say this as an Italian myself!). These young Italians, who opened this pizzeria in Leiden several years ago, have done an outstanding job and truly honor the tradition of Italian cuisine abroad. If you’re looking for an authentic, top-quality Italian pizza in Leiden, I cannot recommend Ragu highly enough. Coraggio, ragazzi, avanti così!

On my way to Turin, Italy, I made a stop in the Netherlands to visit a friend in the beautiful small town of Leiden. He took me to a restaurant called Ragù, where we tried a few different dishes. Later in my trip, when I finally made it to Italy, I actually ordered the exact same meals just to see how they compared. Honestly? Ragù was the clear winner. I never expected to find better Italian food in a small Dutch town than in Italy itself, but this place is the real deal. Highly recommend!

The best ever Italian restaurant in Netherlands

This pizza place is one of my favourites anywhere in the world, and definitely the best in the Netherlands. I’ve tried several of their pizzas, and every single one has been absolutely delicious. The Italian guys who run the place are incredibly welcoming and friendly—they make you feel like you’re enjoying a meal at an Italian family’s home. Mamma mia!

We had a really nice dinner here. The pizza was fresh, tasty, and perfectly cooked. The service was friendly, and the atmosphere was cozy and relaxing. We really enjoyed our time. I would definitely come back. 😊

Ragu used to be our go to pizza spot since we moved to Leiden two years ago. Tiny place, we went at least once a week, eat-in or takeaway. Not anymore. My in laws were visiting and we finally took them, after talking up this pizza for ages. The manager's always had that passive-aggressive vibe, but the food kept us coming back anyway. Tonight a really nice Portuguese speaking waitress served us. After the pizzas and drinks we ordered tiramisu and asked for some tap water, just to have something after the meal. She came back looking embarrassed, said her manager wouldn't let her bring us tap water. I cancelled the tiramisu and asked for the bill instead. The manager came over and said, more than once, "we do not serve tap water to guests." My in law left a review about it, and the restaurant replied saying they'd "chosen not to offer tap water as a courtesy" since we were four people who only ordered "3 pizzas and soft drinks." Except we didn't just have soft drinks, we had 3 beers, 2 cokes and a wine. And honestly, even if we had ordered just water, that's still not a reason to refuse a glass of tap water to people who'd been coming for years. Reading that reply is what actually made me write this. They lost a customer who used to spend 300 euros a month there, over a 5 euro bottle of water. We are not coming back. (we also know tha they don't care, because if they do, they would not treat costumers like this, as you can see on all of their replies)

We used to come here regularly because we really liked the pizza, but good food doesn’t make up for bad customer service. The staff are not very friendly, and the manager has a bad attitude and doesn’t treat customers well. I’m honestly not sure if she even enjoys working there. After having a few experiences like this, we’re just tired of coming here. It’s a real shame because we used to recommend this place to friends and family.

The food wasn't good; even the pizza lacked flavor. Furthermore, you have to check a website to see what you want, but then still have to order from the waiter. All the staff were standing a bit too close to us, which wasn't conducive to a pleasant atmosphere. You also only get one red or white wine by the glass. It is also very pricey for what you get.

The food at Ragu is truly delicious and the service is outstanding. The appetizer, main course (pizza and pasta), and dessert (panna cotta and tiramisu) were all simply superb. We brought our dog, and he too received a very warm welcome and was immediately offered a bowl of water. Highly recommended!

The food is good. But the refusal to provide tap water when most restaurants in Leiden do and then charging €7.5 for a 750ML bottle is reason enough for me to never visit again. Update: Unbelievable the manner in which the owner responds. For a few customers in the past not ordering enough you charge €7.5 simply for water. And what do you mean by giving for free? It’s tap water. Your restaurant is not exactly cheap and every customer is not looking to get you.

Italians! Read this review carefully: I give it the highest score without hesitation. If you want to eat Italian food, this is REAL Italian food. The pizza is phenomenal, better than many pizzerias you'll find in Italy, with top-quality ingredients, perfectly cooked. Delicious, fresh desserts, true to our tradition. And to top it all off, a good espresso. The prices are more than fair, considering the quality and the fact that as soon as you walk in the door, you're in Italy. Well done, you've made us proud!

The special zucchini pasta is one of the best pasta dishes I've ever had in my life. Starters are incredibly delicious. High quality food for a good price. Service and food are better than most restaurants, even in Italy.

This is the best pizza you can get in Leiden. My girlfriend is Italian and she refuses to eat pizza anywhere else because nowhere else is good enough. Now that I have an Italian girlfriend I can finally eat pizza again now. Thanks Salvatore, my saviour 🙏🥹

Not being served water is really very bad. Even though we ordered 180 euros worth of food and wine for 4 people, they couldn't even afford a glass of water. Moreover, it was quite warm. Very disappointing, especially since the food was fresh and flavorful and the service friendly. Upon returning home, we did drink the tap dry to prevent dehydration.

We stopped into Ragu tonight on a bit of a whim and were so glad we did. Even without a reservation, they went out of their way to find us a table, which set the tone for a great experience. The pizza was honestly one of the best we’ve ever had—perfectly cooked with incredible flavour and balance. You can really tell they care about doing things properly. A big shoutout to Salvatore, who took care of us. He was warm, engaging, and clearly passionate about the food they serve, which made the whole experience even better. Definitely a spot we’d come back to and recommend without hesitation.

We had eaten well at Ragu before. Now, the two of us walked in on a Sunday afternoon. The lady who showed us to a table was rude and had the attitude that we should be grateful we were allowed to sit there for a little while. The guys in the kitchen did say hello to us in a friendly way, though. We felt so uncomfortable that we went to another Italian restaurant where we were welcome.

The least unpretentious pizza place i have been to. They serve you any pizza you want. Ask for their off menu special pizza, pineapple, ansjovis pizza… i didn’t know this was possible in such an authentic Italian restaurant. Great experience!

We had a small gathering at RAGU earlier. Food and wine were so good, rare taste if you are looking for a genuine Napolitan pizza in Leiden. However, they could have a better and more welcoming service. The staff looked all uninterested and not really welcoming. There could also be a more Italian and Neapolitan atmosphere to complete the lovely food you are eating and give you a fully genuine Italian mood.

Pizza was mediocre. They refuse to serve tap water, which is insulting. They don't offer a physical menu upfront, instead a QR code to a page that is difficult to navigate (they do give you a physical menu if you request it).

There are better Italian restaurants in Leiden. The €18 per person starter was a huge disappointment, and one of us received the main course more than five minutes before the two pizzas. When we inquired, they claimed there had been a mistake in the kitchen. Unfortunately, it wasn't what we expected for the price.

Last night, my friends and I went to Ragù for dinner because we knew it was really good. We were really looking forward to it, so we were really looking forward to it. We'd been here a year and a half ago and absolutely loved it. Unfortunately, this evening turned out completely differently than expected. All three of us ordered pizza and couldn't finish it, so we clearly told the waitress we wanted to take it home. Twice, in fact! When the waitress returned with an uncertain look/attitude, we saw that she hadn't returned with our pizzas in boxes, but empty-handed. We then wondered where the pizzas we'd wanted to take home had gone. The waitress said we hadn't told her that, even though we clearly had. We then asked her if we could get a refund because she'd literally thrown away half a pizza. She then went to discuss it with the owner. The waitress returned and asked if we wanted limoncello as compensation. We told her we didn't. Then she went back to the owner. The owner came back, assuming two of us wanted limoncello and one didn't, even though we were clear that none of us wanted it. The owner then walked back and came back with her arms crossed and a less than friendly demeanor. She immediately told us she could get the pizzas out of the trash for us. The owner then asked if we wanted anything else, and I said I'd like to take a piece of panetone pistacchio home with me. The owner agreed and returned with a bag containing panetone pistacchio. By then, I was home and wanted to enjoy some panetone pistacchio (instead of my leftover pizza). The piece of panetone pistacchio turned out to be very old. It crumbled and was incredibly dry. This isn't how cake should be. Unfortunately, I had to throw the cake away. It was a real shame, because my friends and I thought that would solve the problem. But apparently not. We're very disappointed with how they treated us. We understand that mistakes can sometimes happen in the hospitality industry, but no one deserves to be treated this way! This was all very unprofessional and unnecessary! Unfortunately, we won't be back!

Edit: save your money and eat at McDonald's. We heard rave reviews about this place and dropped in for dinner without a reservation. We were accommodated which was nice. However the food left much to be desired. The pumpkin flowers were too salty, the pizza bread with garlic butter was slightly underdone, and the pasta dishes itself were a let down. The sauce for the carbonara was split and watery, and the guanicale was bitter because the pepper crust was burnt. The Ragu pasta wasnt much better. The meat was overcooked and so was the sauce. Shame. I had high expectations.

We were a group of 12. The food was really great: all Italian. The service was very attentive and very good I enjoyed this dinner very much. I will go back to this restaurant. 😀

The food was excellent, and we had a wonderful meal. What really bothered me was that we also drank wine and asked for a glass of tap water, which is a common request in many restaurants. However, we weren't given this and had to order extra sparkling water. This was so childish that I've decided not to go there again. Such a shame.

Yes, they must be working hard in this restaurant. That might also be why the pizzas didn't meet our expectations this time. We ordered six pizzas. The 7-grain Parmigiana is a delicious and healthy base, but it was too burnt and had too many black spots/soot. And we now know that PAHs are very unhealthy substances that we shouldn't eat. That's something you have to be aware of as a restaurateur/food preparer. Furthermore, this pizza had very little eggplant. The pizza tonno also had hardly any tuna. I'd rather pay an extra euro and enjoy it 100% than pay less and be 100% disappointed. It's a shame, because the restaurant has built a reputation in Leiden. We'll be back.

The food was delicious, and the staff spoke English. My pizza arrived a little late after I asked.

The menu is online, so that part is more self-service than traditional and welcoming. The music that was playing felt more appropriate during a vinyasa yoga session. Two of the red wines weren't exactly convincing. Although the quality of the pasta dishes was good, they were rather monotonous and uninteresting. All in all, the price-quality ratio wasn't good.

We were looking for Napoli pizza in Leiden and spontaneously found this restaurant. The staff was very kind and gave us a table without reservation. We had fiori di zucca as an appetizer and than pizzas as a main. All three dishes were amazing, very fresh and generous portions. We probably could've shared one pizza, it would've probably be enough for both of us. Unfortunately we were stuffed, so we had to skip the dessert, but it looked very delicious. All in all, great restaurant with nice atmosphere, amazing food, great wine and VERY friendly staff. Loved it!

They really need to improve their reservation system and they don’t take walk-ins at all, no matter what time you arrive, so make sure to book ahead, if you can even get a reservation. Another strange policy: if you ask them to cut your pizza, they’ll refuse “for hygienic reasons.” I don’t understand this logic, the person making the pizza handles the dough and toppings already, so why is cutting it considered unhygienic? Instead, they bring a pizza cutter to your table so you can do it yourself. I understand that a Napolitan Pizza is served like this, but if a costumer asks you politely , why do you refuse? Also, based on how they respond to reviews, it seems they’re never willing to accept feedback. Their replies often place blame back on customers, for example, telling someone that if they were warned food might take a while and still chose to stay, it’s their own fault. That’s not a great look for customer service, and makes lots of sense, seeing how they waiter (specially the host) service can be very rude sometimes. Ah, and the pizza is good. But no sure if worth the effort.

I highly recommend this place, especially the pizza parmigiana. It has really tasty multigrain dough and good ingredients. The staff is friendly. The atmosphere/decor isn't really the main reason to come here, but you can enjoy watching cyclists out the window. We didn't make a reservation in advance. We just went in around 6 p.m. They said they would welcome us, but we had to leave by 7 p.m. at the latest because the restaurant would be fully booked by then, so I recommend making a reservation.

I had a wonderful dinner at Ragu yesterday. They were kind enough to give me a table with no reservation on a busy night and didn't make me feel rushed at all despite the time restriction for my meal. My server was warm and gracious, both with me and the surrounding tables with people speaking several different languages--I heard her speaking Italian, English, and Dutch with ease, which was quite impressive! The food and wine were also great--full of flavor and freshness. It's easy to see why this place stays very busy!

The pizza is disappointing to be honest. If you are having takeout go to Piano B, the pizza is better and cheaper. The pizza we got was burnt, and the toppings were dissapointing. Cosy restaurant in a nice location. I had expected more from the truffle, fresh and not from a jar. I find it an objection that the menu can only be consulted by phone, after all you don't want the phone on the table during a meal, it is also a strange sight that your table companions are staring at their screens. Staff is very friendly but not pro-active. I found the incoming and outgoing of customers at my table who are picking up pizzas downright annoying.

It's an authentic Italian vibe, and the pizza tastes as good as in Italy.

Only place in Leiden where you can eat really good Neapolitan pizza! First time we went (a year ago) it was honestly a bit disappointing… But they definitely earned that back this time!! Pizzas were incredibly tasty and there is a nice atmosphere! The service is friendly and attentive. Dolci’s is also recommended! We will definitely come back and I will spread the word to my friends that they should definitely get a pizza here!
