Sagardi Amsterdam in Burgwallen-Nieuwe Zijde

We had a lovely dinner at Sagardi. The starters were good but on the pricey side, especially the anchovies. Then we had the tuna tartare. The steak, which we shared between three, was very flavourful, though quite fatty. Service was a bit hit and miss: the Italian waiter was lovely, but the rest of the staff seemed somewhat clumsy. A plate fell and the plates were put on the table without planning whether things would have fit. The restaurant is nicely decorated and conveniently located in central Amsterdam.

The Txuleton experience just doesn't do it for me, at least not at this price. The salad of lettuce and onions was executed perfectly, every leaf was well dressed and the ratio of olive oil and vinegar was sublime. The sourdough serves was absolutely top class. I would come back for the tapas but not the steak. Alex was attentive, absolute gem.

As our waiter Alex told us, it was a truly memorable culinary experience. We're Spanish, and finding a good steakhouse made us incredibly happy; the food was fantastic! I'm celiac, but I ate without any problems. They gave me gluten-free bread and were very careful about cross-contamination. It was a great choice! The Spanish waiters explained everything perfectly.

Steak, sausage, morcilla, prawns - all great. The cheesecake was superb. Good wines. Nice people, relaxed and efficient service, great atmosphere. A special occasion, which put the price up but worth it.

The quality of the food is truly excellent. The price you pay disappointed me... This despite the fact that I had eaten here before and therefore knew it wasn't cheap. We had a cola, a bottle of house red wine, a grilled sausage, and a premium steak. It was more than 240 euros; those are amounts that are somewhat beyond my comprehension. But as I said: the food was truly delicious!! I gave 4 stars for the atmosphere, which is partly based on the fact that I, with my company, were the only ones in the restaurant. Actually, the restaurant is beautiful; when you enter, you see the beautifully aged meat displayed in a large refrigerator and the smell of charcoal greets you. Gave this restaurant a second chance last evening but will not be returning. Just like the first time very unsatisfactory. I cannot complain about the taste of the dishes, it all seems very fresh and prepared with care. The biggest issue is the point of expectation. To order 1.3KG meat for the three of us, we expected around 300g of meat considering the bone. We ended up only being able to eat 3/4 slices per person because there was so little. Then to see others around us getting served the same kind of dish but with tinier or no bones was genuinely just frustrating. Either make it everyone’s problem or tell us we would be paying for a bone that weighs around 600-700g because we definitely wouldn’t have ordered this dish then. It’s simply something that for this premium pricing is unacceptable. And this happening twice with about a year in between tells me enough. Unless you do not care about what u get for what u pay then I recommend to avoid. Great tasting food, Pretty atmosphere.

Sagardi felt like a tourist trap. I’ve had plenty of beef in my life (I was born and raised in Argentina) and plenty of Basque food and beef (in the Basque Country, and at high end Basque restaurants). I’ve also cooked “vaca vieja” meat at home. The steak we ordered was probably the least appealing piece of beef I’ve had in a long time. My wife and I had a couple of bites each and left the rest uneaten (almost unheard of for us). Also… why were the steak and sweetbreads served with a sauce!? That is not what Basques would do. Good meat does not need to hide behind a sauce. The rest (morcilla and vegetables) was fine, but it was overshadowed by the disappointment with the meat. The service was mediocre as well.

Exceptional. Unbeatable service. The staff were charming, attentive, and knowledgeable about the products. They spoke to us in Spanish (appreciate it) and also had a menu in Spanish—something not easy to find in this city. And what can I say about the smell of the charcoal grill? I loved it—it felt like coming home. Plus, the value for money is excellent. We ordered two starters that were finger-licking good: the combination of bonito and anchovy on crispy bread was unbeatable—such an intense flavour. But my favorite was the piquillo peppers stuffed with *txangurro* (spider crab); I practically licked the plate clean. Oh my, how I have missed *txangurro*—what flavour, what texture: sumptuous, intense, delicious... Then we ordered the main courses: a *bacalao a la vizcaína* (Vizcaya-style salt cod), which was absolutely excellent. And a ribeye steak (txuletón) from an older cow, meant for two, which was cooked to perfection—rare on the inside and nicely charred on the outside; it was so good I almost cried. For dessert, we had apple tart and rice pudding. Both were absolutely delicious. Without a doubt, a great restaurant.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A fantastic experience at Sagardi Amsterdam. The food was spectacular, especially the grilled turbot, which was absolutely delicious. We also thoroughly enjoyed the octopus and the piquillo peppers stuffed with spider crab. Everything was beautifully prepared and incredibly flavorful. But if there's one thing we want to highlight, it's the friendliness and hospitality of the staff. When we made the reservation, they informed us that, since we were bringing our dog, we could only eat on the terrace. However, when we arrived at the restaurant, they kindly allowed us to eat inside with him, which we greatly appreciated because the terrace wasn't very inviting. They also brought our dog water and were incredibly affectionate, attentive, and thoughtful throughout the entire meal. It was clear they were genuinely delighted to have him, and for us, those kinds of gestures make a huge difference. We felt very comfortable and very welcome. We would definitely return, both for the quality of the food and for the warm and friendly service from the entire team. Thank you so much for making us feel so welcome and for the care you showed our dog. ❤️🐶

Good quality food, but expensive. Especially the natural cider, which costs about four or five times more than in Spain. Super peaceful atmosphere with excellent service from all the staff.

Fantastic!!! The staff was kind and attentive. The food was fabulous, we had sirloin, sausage, tomato salad and piquillo peppers. Oh! And their delicious sour dough bread. It was wonderful!!!! The mocktails were great and not sugary. And… They have menus in English so no guessing for tourists. Definitely would eat here again!!!

The experience was great. We went for the premium beef, and other starters, everything was delicious. Also worth to mention the diverse and long selection of wines. All the waiters were so nice to us, and the atmosphere was superb, great music with the perfect volume and chill. Even though the grill is on the middle of the restaurant, you could not feel it. We will absolutely come back to try the fish. Thank you Sagardi for bringing this excellent concept to Amsterdam.

The food at Sagardi Amsterdam was okay, but unfortunately the overall experience was disappointing. From the beginning, the service felt very rushed. We hadn’t even finished our aperitif when the first plate arrived. We asked the team three separate times to slow things down, but the dishes continued to come far too quickly. Considering the relatively high prices, we expected a much more relaxed and enjoyable experience. Instead, we felt pressured throughout the meal and couldn’t really enjoy the food or the moment. The aggressive pace of the service really spoiled the evening for us. Unfortunately, not an experience we would be eager to repeat.

Beware for the tourist trap! The food was good, the service was friendly and the atmosphere was fine... You've tasted the Baskian origin. But if you notice at the end that they charge you for every slice of bread you dared to take (actually bread they placed on the table without you asking, so what should be included in the service)... Then no matter how fine it started, your meal ends in a disappointment

Basque restaurant with very nice ambience, friendly staff and a large selection of wines. We enjoyed everything that we tried, it is however quite expensive.

We stopped here out of the blue with our young son, because of the ambiance in the entrance. They have a childrens option which is very good, our son liked it. The Food was very aromatic and the grilled option was better than we expected. We took the spear ribs and the Crab dishes with the Very good tomatoes salad. The service was Fantastic!

Fabulous dinner as always. One of the most consistent steakhouse experiences in Amsterdam, from the attention to the food quality to the preparation to the wine list. The entire staff is excellent and purposeful. The turbot beautifully cooked. The dry-aged 15 year cow delicious, the chorizo appetizer delightful, and the cheesecake (though not proper Basque style) a wonderful end of meal dish. Perfeto :)

I was served my glass of wine promptly, but after that I waited 30 minutes just to place my food order. During that time, I tried several times to get the attention of a waiter. He acknowledged me by gesturing that I should wait, but never came back, and no one else offered to take my order. After waiting half an hour, the waiter finally returned. By then, I had completely lost my appetite. I paid for my glass of wine and left without ordering any food. I cannot comment on the food because I never had the opportunity to try it. However, the level of service was unacceptable, especially for a restaurant with such a strong reputation. Unfortunately, this experience means I will not be returning.

A gray mouse on the outside, a colorful parrot on the inside! 🦜✨ From the outside, Sagardi looks rather unassuming – you could easily walk right past it. But those who cross the threshold find themselves in a completely different world. Inside, a truly chic, high-quality ambiance awaits, including a seriously cool show-cooking grill and a dry-aging refrigerator that will make any meat lover's dreams come true. The food? Absolutely fantastic. And the best part: For this quality, the bill won't break the bank – the price is perfectly reasonable. Oh, and because it needs to be said: Even the restrooms were spotless. Verdict: Never underestimate the unassuming exterior. Inside, your taste buds will have a party! A must-try.

The entire experience from start to finish was incredible. The service impeccable. The food delectable. We loved everything about our time there. Manuel was especially attentive and gave us recommendations for wine and food. We will continue to return again and again!

We started with the chef’s complimentary mini chorizos, which were a nice gesture but ultimately just average. We ordered the charred octopus, which was beautifully plated and cooked perfectly. The lettuce hearts were the standout dish of the night fresh, flavorful, and easily our favorite. The croquettes were also just average. I do want to mention that all of the staff members we interacted with were warm, welcoming, and genuinely kind. The service throughout the evening was excellent. Unfortunately, the biggest disappointment was the grilled cod. It was served al dente completely. For a grilled fish dish, this was simply unacceptable. Ironically, at €32, it was the most expensive dish we ordered, and no one at the table could eat it. The restaurant also offers whole fish grilled over charcoal, with the least expensive option starting at €170. After being served raw cod, we couldn’t imagine spending that much on a whole fish, as it left us questioning how those would be prepared. Overall, the meal started with promise, and the hospitality from all of the staff members was outstanding. Sadly, the raw cod overshadowed what could have been a great dining experience.

This place is highly overrated. What a disappointment. We ordered the Donostia-Style Seafood Soup listed under “Grandma’s Home Cooking.” Traditionally, this particular dish is a rich, flavorful Basque soup brimming with white fish and shrimp—at least that’s what a quick internet search reveals. Sagardi’s version is a pathetic rendition of what should have easily been a deliciously satisfying culinary experience. Instead of the classic Basque fish soup we anticipated, we received a bowl of dark, bland broth with exactly three tiny pieces of white fish and two pitiful shrimp. Indeed, at first we weren’t sure if the soup contained any fish at all as we had to search to find the five lonely scraps of seafood floating in the sea of broth. When we mentioned our surprise and disappointment to our waiter—whom we barely saw throughout the course of the meal—he replied, “Well, it’s not a hearty soup.” Not a hearty soup? Pardon me. Yes it is, at least according to Basque tradition! Do a quick google image search for yourself and see what this soup is supposed to look like. We aren’t sure what Sagardi’s chefs are thinking, but we would bet that their grandmother would turn over in her grave if she knew what her grandsons were serving in her name. And she would be even more appalled that they were charging 29 euros for it. Save your time and money and go somewhere else.

★★☆☆☆ I brought an important guest here hoping for a fantastic premium dinner. The evening actually started out great. The staff was lovely and our artichoke, red pepper and sausages starters were excellent. But then the main courses arrived and turned this into one of the worst value for money meals I have ever had. Out of a 400 euro bill for three people, the most expensive items were complete failures. The 189 euro premium steak was the biggest letdown of my life. It was way too salty and lacked any depth of flavor. The 120 euro fish was just as disappointing. It is such a shame to take a fresh high quality product and drown it in garlic oil until there is absolutely no fish flavor left. We finished with a Basque cheesecake that was just okay but desperately needed a tart kick like fresh strawberry jam. It is a great spot if you just want wine and appetizers at the bar. But as a main dining experience to host a guest, it was a massive disappointment.

The service is always really nice and helpful. We have now been twice and fully trust the staff to “make up” the dinner for us based on the starters they recommend. The steak is MOUTHWATERING but the best part is the cheesecake!! The music inside is not too loud but there is enough of a buzz that you can have a private conversation. Sagardi is probably one of the best restaurants in Amsterdam.

Getting a reservation at Sagardi Amsterdam was a great way to kick off our honeymoon! The space is very chic and artistic, with an interior that feels sophisticated yet warm. The star of the show was the Txuleton, which is their signature premium bone-in steak from old Basque dairy cows. It is aged for at least four weeks, and they actually let you see and select your specific cut before it goes on the grill. The quality of the meat is incredible—dry and super fresh—and it was honestly one of the best steaks I’ve ever had, even compared to the top spots in New York. While the other dishes were fine and it can get pricey (especially if you dive into the wine list). If you just arrived in Amsterdam and want a truly memorable, high-quality meal, this is a perfect spot.

A one-of-a-kind experience! From the professionalism, kindness, and cheerfulness of the waiters, through the aesthetics of the food presentation to the wonderful taste of every dish we ate. From the first courses of heavy feta, asparagus, artichoke salad, lettuce salad, carpaccio with warm and delicious bread, and then the main course was premium beef with bone and fat that literally melted in the mouth, followed by fiera, potatoes as fries, and peas with snow peas. The desserts really closed out a wonderful meal in an amazing way: rice pudding and strawberries in warm coulis sauce with homemade sheep's milk ice cream.

There were six of us for lunch. It was our first visit, and we highly recommend the restaurant. The ambiance is simple but nicely done. The food was truly excellent; the starters were simple but expertly prepared, as was the grilled sea bass. Not inexpensive, but top quality. 😁

A lovely place with spectacular food

Great dining experience with delicious meat 🥩 the traditional sausage was also amazing 😋 We visited as a couple with a baby. Unfortunately, the high chair didn’t have proper safety support. The staff also came across as a bit pushy—despite being just two adults, they kept encouraging us to order 1 kg of meat. When we chose a portion of mature beef sirloin instead, the staff member made comments suggesting we should have ordered the larger portion and taken leftovers home, which felt unnecessary and uncomfortable. For a restaurant of this quality, this kind of behavior is not appropriate. For that reason, I’d recommend dining here with at least three adults.

The food was excellent - we particularly enjoyed the steak experience. The menu is diverse and we would have loved many other dishes, but we came for their approach to meat. Excellent wine list! Definitely expensive, but a great experience overall.

We stumbled onto Sagardi after a canal tour and were absolutely blown away. We ordered the monkfish prepared Basque-style, and it was easily one of the best seafood dishes we’ve ever had, perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The baby leeks were another standout, simple but incredibly delicious. The service was fantastic, attentive, knowledgeable, and welcoming. It was our first meal in Amsterdam, and it set a very high bar. If you want authentic Basque flavors and a special atmosphere, don’t hesitate. A must visit!

Last summer with my girlfriend we went in San Sebastian (where she say YES) and was Amazing. Last our visit in Sagardia we feel exactly same like there! Level of service and food quality in highest level. Carpaccio,steak and cheescake❤️Just Love It!!!

The food was unique; the bread with olive oil was delicious. The halibut was fatty and oily, but not cheap. The appetizers were also very special, and the waiters were handsome and polite. One of the best meals I had during my stay in the Netherlands.

The waiter suggested a meat dish without mentioning the price, speaking in rapid, barely understandable English. When I saw the Google reviews showing prices per 100g, I asked about the price of the meat I'd ordered: €110! I was able to cancel, but the feeling of being ripped off lingered throughout the entire meal... right up until the bill arrived, where we were charged for two baskets of bread instead of one! The food itself wasn't bad, but it was overpriced for what it was, and their business practices are questionable. Avoid this place.

This is just great. Nice and conveniently quiet on Mondays we experienced a great birthday party for three. Ans day what?! The waiter even really sang for us!! Good quality food. We asked for a chefs menu and that is what they understand very well. Choose for the Rioja from the house 😍. Have visited previously and will definitely take the opportunity to visit again!

We sat at a table next to the bar, which was quite tight and the waiters kept knocking a chair. Annoying. The chairs are uncomfortable - wooden with no cushions. Hard to sit on for a whole meal and in a premium restaurant. The waiter explained how the food could be ordered but we understood very little. Plus, half way through the meal he offered to take our coats. The starters were tasty and decent sized portions but the starters didn’t come together. We ordered sea bass for four people at a cost of £120. Unbelievable. This was very expensive for one fish. Plus, it was swimming in oil. The sides were extremely small and the twice cooked wedges we ordered were just chips. I found the service to be arrogant and patronising. Also, we had to chase for drinks many times. Plus, when the drinks came, he handed them to us and did not remove the wine glasses, which should be when no wine is ordered. As we left, having spent over 300 euros, not even a thank you or goodbye. In summary, I’d not go back because the experience felt arrogant, judgemental, and the prices were of a fine dining restaurant that was neither met by food quality or service. My phrase is, charge what you want, but the service and quality needs to match the cost. *** Updated 26-11-25 *** I completed the survey they emailed me on 05-10-25, and I requested a refund because the meal had been so poor. I had to chase for a reply 4 times. Then, I finally received a reply on 26-11-25 offering some appetisers and wine. We live in the UK and would not travel for that anyway. Poor. Overall, not only was the restaurant experience one of the worst I have ever had, but the communication and resolution was very poor too. I'd never go back, even if it was free. With so many great restaurants in Amsterdam, try anywhere else.
