Sampurna in Grachtengordel-Zuid

This restaurant was recommended to us by our food tour guide and it did not disappoint. The first time i have tried Indonesian food and it was outstanding.

Made a reservation at the beginning of the week. Asked for the table by the window. Paid £45. Arrived on Friday at 12:15, and that table was occupied "these people were here earlier". Well, if I reserve for 12:30 and pay £45, I expect that spot to be available (you have those 'reserved' signs...) or that if someone else has the reservation, you indicate this. The second downside was the discussion with the 'new?' staff, regarding the fact that the Nasi Kuning rijsttafel is only available in the evening. It is strange that we always order it at lunch and it actually arrives then. (I had mentioned this when making the reservation, by the way). The third downside is that the Kuning rijsttafel looked different (inferior) than before, so as far as I'm concerned, the renovation is not a success. So, a very disappointing experience. A real shame.

Very special taste and experience, love most of the dish but few of them were a bit too slaty for us. Interior design is great but the tables and paths ways in between were a bit tight. Overall a great restaurant, I do recommend

I ordered the Rijsttafel for 2. The food was decent, the assortment was fun. The service was pretty terrible. The staff were friendly but I asked 4 times for sparkling water, got charged for it but never received it. I asked for the check and waited 15 minutes before it came.

We had an extensive rijsttafel with many diverse dishes. It was very varied and varied in spiciness. It was more than enough for 2 people. The service was undeniably outstanding. Friendly and excellent service. You rarely experience something like that. The atmosphere was fine, one minor drawback: the tables are close together and the staff have to maneuver to get past them. It is highly recommended and I will definitely be back.

We are never disappointed at Sampurna. Last night we were at their restaurant on the Singel. The food was delicious. As always they catered for our dietary requirements too! We were a mix of meat eaters stretching to vegan. The vegan/vegetarian rijsttafel was amazing. They create different textures and flavours with tofu adding variety and spice! The interior is cosy; Indonesian, but in a subtle and stylish way. And best of all is the staff. Welcoming, friendly, attentive, totally customer orientated! We are so lucky we live in Amsterdam and can go to their restaurants whenever we want!

Once a hidden gem, now just another tourist trap near the flower market I've lived in Amsterdam for over 22 years, and for most of that time, this restaurant was genuinely one of the best Indonesian dining experiences in the city. I celebrated multiple birthdays here, and the food used to be spectacular — bold, authentic, spiced perfectly. I recommended it constantly. My most recent visit made it painfully clear what has happened: this place has turned into a classic tourist trap, almost certainly because of its location right on the flower market, one of the busiest tourist strips in Amsterdam. The quality has been sacrificed for foot traffic, and it shows in every part of the experience. Seated in the middle of an empty restaurant, for no reason I arrived early when the restaurant was nearly empty. I'm almost 2 meters tall and simply asked to be seated against the wall so I'd have room for my legs. This reasonable request was flatly refused, with no explanation, and I was placed at a table in the middle of the main walkway instead — clearly the least comfortable spot in the house, in an otherwise empty room. The food has gone downhill — badly The dishes were bland, generic, and completely lacking the spice and depth that used to define this place. The chicken in particular had almost no flavor at all. This tasted like food made in bulk for tourists who don't know any better — quick, cheap, and forgettable — not the celebrated Indonesian cuisine this restaurant used to be known for. Shouted at by staff over something they caused Later in the meal, a staff member (woman, roughly 50) came up and started yelling at me because my legs were slightly in the walkway — the same walkway I'd been forced into because my original seating request was denied. Instead of a polite word, I was publicly scolded in front of other customers. Genuinely humiliating, and completely unnecessary. Zero accountability, and a public scene on the street After the meal, I asked staff if she could come speak with me so I could explain how uncomfortable the situation had made me feel. She refused. When I approached her directly and explained the seating issue and how rude her outburst had been, she didn't apologize — she insisted it was entirely my fault. I paid, left calmly, and told her this would be my last visit. Instead of letting it go, she followed me out onto the street and made a loud public scene, shouting that I would never be allowed back. After this experience, I looked through other recent reviews — and it got worse I found other reviews mentioning rodents on the premises, including a video, which raises serious questions about the hygiene standards behind the scenes. Combined with my own experience, this is not just a "bad night" — it looks like a broader decline across food quality, service, and basic cleanliness. Bottom line This restaurant used to be a genuine landmark of Indonesian cuisine in Amsterdam. Today, it's just another overpriced, underwhelming stop for tourists passing through the flower market — mediocre food, no regard for returning customers, staff who think screaming at guests is acceptable, and apparently hygiene issues that other customers have documented as well. Location clearly took priority over quality and cleanliness a long time ago.

Had a delicious meal with 2 people.

We ordered the Batara option for 4. The food was delicious. Our first time ever eating Indonesian. All was delicious but some stand-outs for us were the Soto Ayam, Sate Kambing, Serundeng, Sambal Goreng and Dageng Smoor. The table was a bit cramped with all the bowls of food plus 4 dinner plates and drinks but it’s a very minor thing. We would happily return!

Impeccable 5 star experience! Our waiter Chris was patient, polite, and went above and beyond to help us ordering. I have never had a more pleasant and enjoyable dining experience. An absolute must when in Amsterdam.

Some friends had recommended that we try a Rijsttafel meal whilst in Amsterdam. We chose Sampurna because it was the closest to our hotel. We had pre-booked it for dinner but when we arrived there appeared to be some confusion with our booking. I showed them my reservation and it appeared that they had us booked in for a different time. However, nothing was any problem. They managed to accommodate us despite the restaurant being very busy and we ordered the Rijsttafel. Omg, there was so much food between two of us. The food and wine were excellent, the service was fantastic and the staff kept checking on us to make sure all was ok.

Delicious food and efficient service.

Honestly, I was disappointed. I enjoyed the food, but for this price, I expect the dishes to be nice and hot. The griddle isn't sufficient to keep the lukewarm dishes lukewarm, and everything was cold within 30 minutes. Not enough rice, so you have to order more. I found the service the most disappointing; not a single attempt at a friendly connection… immediately asking three times if we had made a choice yet, no explanation, no effort to make us feel welcome. It felt like we had to leave quickly, and that’s not what I go out to eat for. I had to pay a deposit of 45 euros when reserving online, which is quite a lot of money. At least give me a good feeling when I walk in as a sign of appreciation. Even though the food tasted good, it is not worth repeating.

One of the servers was not nice, in fact rude for someoe who works in service industry. It was first time trying Indonesian food and was not familiar with dishes so asked questions about the menu. I guess I asked too many questions or took too long to order. After ordering one dish, she walked away. Not even mentioning I will be back or let me give you more time. Only reason I gave a 2 star rating is because of other servers that came to serve my table. If she was the only server, I would have given 1 star rating and not leave a gratuity. First restaurant that asked for a gratuity in Amsterdam had to be this restaurant.

The food was delicious, but for a rijsttafel of more than €35 pp, there was really too little food! So, it's a shame, but the portions were really too small.

I ordered the rice table dish (frijsttafek) gluten free. They brought it to my table and the waitress realized it wasn’t gluten-free and went back to the kitchen to have them fix it. The waitresses were amazing. If you tell them you are gluten-free and then check once the food is delivered it will be done right. Service was fantastic and the food was really delicious.

I celebrated my birthday at your place with our family. We thoroughly enjoyed a delicious rijsttafel once again. And your hospitality.

They really don’t know how to treat their customers, and unfortunately, the management seems to be a big part of the problem. The location is great, but you’re better off going somewhere where the staff are genuinely kind and welcoming, such as Long Pura, or MAX in the Jordaan. The food quality has also declined, especially considering the prices. I get the impression that because of the great location and the reputation they built in the past, they no longer feel the need to maintain the same level of quality or service.

The hostess asked us to wait 45 mins and later said sorry we can’t accommodate. I would’ve preferred if she said that upfront. We entered at 8:45, she asked us to wait and come back at 9:30. After returning, she was very rude. Avoid this place.

If I could give a negative or zero star review, I would totally give it to this restaurant. The staff is extremely rude and clearly does not need any business. We were a large group, they asked us to come back in 1 hour so they can seat us and when we did, they refused to seat us, and were very condescending.

We received a fabulous welcome and helpful advice when ordering our food. The food was plentiful, delicious and presented beautifully.

While searching for restaurants during our visit to Amsterdam, I came across Sampurna, an Indonesian restaurant that looked highly rated, so I decided to make a reservation. I'm glad we did! The restaurant isn't particularly visible from the main street, so it's easy to walk past if you're not looking for it. We visited in the late afternoon/evening, and the view wasn't especially scenic as the flower shop opposite had already closed, making the area feel more like a market after trading hours. As it was our first time trying Indonesian cuisine, we weren't quite sure what to order or how the dining experience worked. The waiter was very helpful and recommended a sharing-style meal, which turned out to be an excellent suggestion. The service wasn't particularly fast, and there was a slight wait between courses, but we weren't in a rush so it wasn't an issue for us. Just bear in mind that there is a maximum dining time of two hours. One thing that surprised us was the size of the serving dishes. The sharing platter arrived in several small plates and bowls, and initially we thought there wouldn't be enough food for our group of six (four adults and two children). However, we couldn't have been more wrong! There was plenty of food, and by the end of the meal we were all completely full. Every dish was delicious, including the salads. The sharing concept made the meal even more enjoyable because everyone at the table could try a little bit of everything. It was a fantastic introduction to Indonesian cuisine. One tip for future visitors: book a table in advance. The restaurant is very popular, and if you don't have a reservation, there's a good chance you could be turned away. Overall, we had a wonderful dining experience and would happily return on our next visit to Amsterdam.

Food was not hot ie tepid.., no flavour, clearly made the day before or earlier and re heated. Probably some of the worst Indonesian I have had in a restaurant in Amsterdam.

We were a group of eight who have never had Indonesian food. It was a different eating experience for us. We liked most of the dishes. Some not so much. There were too many spicy dishes even though the server assured us only one dish would be spicy. Harder to share dishes for eight sitting at a long table. A round table would’ve been better.

Everything was wonderful and beautiful. If we want to complain of anything, is that the spacing between tables are VERY tight ... I know that the restaurant is very small in space but perhaps put less tables ??? Just a suggestion.

We reserved the seats for two one day before for 9:30 pm dining. We waited for over 50 minutes to get the food. The waiters didn't talk to us after provided the drink and we order the food. The food was salty. The worst thing was that the waiter ordered two Rijsttafel for us without telling us. Later she said it is one per person, which was not what we wanted. We ended with lots of food left. It was a waste not just food but also our time and money. I won't recommend this restaurant.

We had the best experience. Seemed to be THE place to enjoy a genuine rijstaffel as everyone around us was doing the same. Even friends we met up with afterwards asked if we ate at Sampurna, when we told them about our dining experience. Highly recommend.

Very disappointing and unnecessarily rude experience. I urgently needed to use the restroom, so I went inside and politely asked one of the staff members if I could use the toilet. He kindly said yes and even showed me where it was. Just as I was about to enter, another staff member started calling after me and told me the restroom was “customers only.” I explained that her colleague had already given me permission, but he then came over and apologized and I was still refused. It was extremely obvious that this was an urgent situation, so I even offered to PAY to use the restroom. They still said no. I then asked to buy a bottle of water so I could technically be a customer, but I was told the register was already closed and they could not sell me anything. So despite having permission initially, offering to pay for the restroom, and even trying to purchase something, I was still turned away. I understand having a customers-only policy, but there was absolutely no flexibility or basic consideration for someone who was clearly in an urgent situation. The first staff member was kind and seemed genuinely willing to help, so I have nothing against him. Unfortunately, the way the situation was handled afterwards was extremely frustrating and left a very bad impression.

We were looking for an Indonesian restaurant to celebrate a birthday, and we stumbled upon Sampurna quite by chance. Our first impression upon arriving that evening, on the street, was that the facade seemed calm, almost empty… we were already regretting our choice. Then we pushed open the door with a lot of hesitation—and there it was, a whole new world! A lively, bustling room, full of life. Once seated and with the air conditioning turned off (since it was blowing directly on us), we tentatively ordered a set menu, accompanied by our usual beer. There were four of us, but we ordered for three. Total misjudgment: it was a veritable explosion of flavors, which took me back more than twenty years to a meal in a similar restaurant. A true Proustian madeleine. And the portions were generous. A little tip for future customers: watch out for the chilies! My son almost choked on one of them 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️ Authenticity comes at a price. 🥵🤣🤣😅 A wonderful, warm, and flavorful experience.

We had a wonderful evening here recently with our children. The staff were delightful and guided us in our ordering. We had the rijstaffle, which was delicious, and they even went so far as to put the spicy food our side and the less spicy beside the children. Great resistant, I’d highly recommend.

Went here alone to have one last meal before my flight to leave Amsterdam. I ordered their Sampurna Rijsttafel where you can get a taste of a variety of dishes and it was delicious! The only dish i didn’t like was I think the tofu dish (can’t tell)? It had a very strong ginger taste and grainy texture that I wasn’t really into, but everything else was great 😊 and the waitress was super nice 👍🏻

Our first ristajffle experience was excellent at Santana. Portions were generous service was friendly. Everything tasted very well.

Staff were fantastic here and very helpful. The meal was fantastic and we were very happy with the taste, freshness and speed with which it came out. We had the Ristaffel and found the portions perfect. Very happy we chose Sampurna for our Indonesian meal in Amsterdam.

Terrible. The waitress was unfriendly from the moment we arrived and didn't give the impression she wanted to serve us. We had booked in advance online because we thought it would be mandatory given the limited number of available time slots, but apart from us and one other couple, no one else had booked. It's very unclear. The dishes were extremely spicy with sauce everywhere, making them almost inedible. My girlfriend ordered the vegetarian dish and said it was the worst tofu she'd ever had. While going to the restroom, I heard someone else vomit. I absolutely do not recommend this restaurant.

Don't miss out on the indonesian food while you're in amsterdam. Especially in sampurna. Highly Reccomend trying the platter which lets you try every dish indonesia has to offer 💙💙

A friendly welcome, fast service and flavorful dishes.

If you want a Polynesian rice table in Amsterdam, this is the place to go! My family had an amazing time! There was a lot of food but were in small dishes. We loved the beef and shrimp kebabs. It was a little bit more expensive than other places, but totally worth it! At the end of our meal before we left, we chatted with a server. She was so nice and funny, we talked to her for a little bit. We had a wonderful time. I definitely recommend it.

The mango salad (note the title of the dish) had no mango in it, they apologized and brought me a side of mango. The fried wontons also had less than a teaspoon of filling, they were like wonton crackers.

Every dish we tried was spectacular!!! What an experience! Being a vegetarian I was pleasantly surprised by each option that was made with no meat. Such flavor and depth! My husband loved his dishes but devoured the spicy beef dish! Highly highly recommend this place for anyone wanting to try the rijsttafel experimece!!

I liked the food. However, the green beans came from the freezer, which I found a shame. I thought the Ikan spring rolls were delicious. I was sitting outside and a staff member went to smoke a cigarette during my meal, which I found very unpleasant. She should have done that further away.

A nice restaurant serving indonesian food. We had to do a banquet as we were a group larger than 5 but we got to taste abit of everything. All the dishes that was brought out was rich in flavour and delicious. It was quite similar to tapas but it is well thought and hit all the right tastebuds. Best indonesian food I have eaten. Service was friendly and efficient and atmosphere was initmate. Highly recommend to try.

My wife & I arrived a little earlier than our reserved slot and were seated within no time. Post that we faced challenges with our hostess who forced us to order more than what we wanted. We were not that hungry and wanted to order a nasi gorang java and chicken satay. She forced us to order another starter and drinks. She did not let us even go through the menu and stood on our head. While we were still eating and my wife was having her wine, she again pushed us on whether we’ve eaten or not. She could clearly see that we are still eating and she again pushed us. We told her that we are eating despite that she pushed us again. In dismay we asked her to take the food away and plates. It felt as if she had a minimum revenue per table and behaved in a way that’s disrespectful. It seemed we were treated differently as were from South Asia. We couldn’t savour or appreciate the food due to the way we were treated. Disappointed.

As an Indonesian, I think the food is good, but it is quite expensive for what you get. Even my cousin who lives in Amsterdam thinks it is on the expensive side. The staffs could also be a bit friendlier and more attentive. As Indonesians, we really value warm and friendly hospitality, so improving the service would make the overall experience even better.

The Javanese restaurant is very delicious, and the atmosphere and service are excellent. We ordered the set menu, which was fantastic and included many different dishes.

Not the friendliest staff, especially the older Indonesian lady - both times I was there. Tempe was really disappointing as it was served cold and quite stale. Rice was also lukewarm. I was served a much smaller portion the first time I was there, and it was a full bowl the second time. Definitely inconsistent portion-wise. To top it all off the communication with the staff and her attitude left a bad taste in the mouth and made me uncomfortable and rather dejected throughout my whole visit. My caucasian friend received a much positive treatment.

Tried Vietnamese food today and, sadly, I really didn’t enjoy what I ordered 😅 Maybe I just picked the wrong dish… or maybe Vietnamese cuisine simply isn’t for me.

Top notch dining experience, from start to finish. The restaurant staff were friendly and helpful, and the food was spectacular. I’m so happy we found this little gem.

Good food, but very poor service. We booked at 9:45 PM, as it was the only available time. As soon as we arrived, the waitress informed us that the kitchen would close in 20 minutes. She handed us two menus for five people, and when we asked for more, she said she didn't have five menus. We asked for help and suggestions before ordering, and the service was very superficial. They forgot one of the orders, and no one showed up to check if everything was okay. I definitely wouldn't recommend this restaurant, and I'd suggest reviewing the available reservation times.

Sooo unbelievably tasty, the goat skewers and sweet stewed beef were the highlights for me. Super sweet waitress and fast service as well.

I was excited to try the Rijsttafel. I chose one of the 3 options available. I found it too focused around coconut. Considering that i love coconut and of course i understand is part of the cuisine but i still felt this was too much and not pleasurable. There where 14+ dishes (so quantity wise it was more than fine) but there was maybe one or two that i actually enjoyed but still none that i found truly great. The staff was polite and helpful.

I’ve eaten at Sampurna for more than 40 years, since being a student in Amsterdam in the 1980s. I tried to make a reservation at the Singel branch today, thinking it was the only one. Unfortunately, when my daughters and I showed up it turned out there is another, this year opened, branch at Lijnbaansgracht which I wasn’t aware of. The waitress or manager at Singel was rather unpleasant and unprofessional, insisting we made a reservation at Lijnbaansgracht. Even if we had made a mistake she could have handled it in a friendlier way. I suggested that they should clearly mention over the phone at which branch you’re making a reservation. She wouldn’t have it and kept repeating we made a wrong reservation. Anyway, we walked to the Lijnbaansgracht branch and there the waitress/manager was much friendlier. The food was tasty but used to be better in the past at the original Singel branch. I hope in future a guest at Singel will be treated better, even though they’re probably swarmed by tourists anyway. The stars I gave reflect a combi of the below par treatment at Singel and the excellent service at Lijnbaansgracht.

I was craving rice and Asian food, so I came here because I love Indonesian food. The food tasted really good and definitely satisfied my craving for Asian food! 😄

We have been here before in September and really enjoyed our experience, the food and service were amazing. Sadly it wasn't repeated. We ordered the rice table and some of the dishes were inedible. Especially the beef in sweet soy. Last time it was the star of the table. This visit it was extremely dry and overcooked. Hard as a rock. The staff seemed unhappy and were arguing with each other and the service showed that. Really disappointing.

Food and service were amazing! The atmosphere was nice, but a little chilly and slightly cramped. Food made up for everything though, it was great!

Great Indonesian food in the heart of Amsterdam. Order the rijsttafel to get a variety of small plates and flavors. Service was great. The restaurant is small and was very busy so reservation is recommended.

SAMPURNA came highly recommended by friends and it did not disappoint. I highly recommend choosing the meal for the table. Such variety. And the treated my gluten allergy perfectly!

A really great spot and we’d recommend the rijsttafel/rice table for a great selection of their dishes. They were also happy to accommodate my nut allergy.

This was a great experience overall. The Indonesian food was flavorful and a great combination of flavors and textures. Our family of four had the rijsttafel, so we had a great sampling of foods from the menu. The location is convenient and easy to walk to. We made a reservation in advance, and had no problems at all when we arrived.

The food is fantastic but the service is awful. There are other places to get great Indonesian food served with much less attitude. I would not go back.

This was a big disappointment, having enjoyed other Indonesian restaurants in Amsterdam. The atmosphere feels very touristic and cramped.Our group of 4 was all vegetarian except we eat seafood. We informed the wait staff of these details exactly, in Dutch, and said we would like rijstafel 31euros each but please keep the vegetarian and seafood in mind. What we received was 80% of the dishes were made with tofu, the sauces tasted very similar, and the spicy dish was not very spicy. Not one of the dishes had seafood or fish, which is normally served on the menu. There were a couple of vegetable dishes, and those tasted nice. They need to be more creative in their approach to vegetarianism, which I’ve seen at other Indonesian restaurants in the area. Look further a field if you are trying to find the best Indonesian food, especially for vegetarians.

Really good meal! Great flavour and our server was very nice. It was a bit expensive for what we received compared to other Indonesian restaurants but that can be expected so close to the heart of the city.

A delightful discovery with a menu offering a mix of several dishes. Be warned, however, that the dishes can be very spicy…

Wide choice on the menu tho we decided on the “rice table” which was a feast of various Indonesian dishes served together providing lots if different flavours. An excellent choice for a reasonable price. Great service and would fully recommend this restaurant.

We had a fabulous dining experience here on a Monday evening; the food was excellent and great service too . If you like Indonesian food , a visit to this restaurant in Amsterdam is a must !

Very good food. Very poor service. We arrived five minutes before our 5pm reservation and understood dinner service didn’t begin until 5. We were served shrimp crackers right away, but after 25 minutes we still had no water, even though we’d eventually flagged down the server to request it. The waitstaff was literally setting out glasses at every empty table while ignoring the fact that their actual customers had been waiting for water for half an hour. At the same time, I noticed all the other customers had been served a tray of dips with their shrimp crackers, but we hadn’t. It wasn’t personal; just nobody noticed or cared what was happening at our table. We went to many restaurants in the Netherlands and in Scandinavia during our two-week trip, and this was hands-down the worst service anywhere. We really enjoyed the food itself (we got the most elaborate rijstaffel they offer), so I’d still recommend this place based on that. Just be aware that the server will barely notice you are there at all, and expect to be there for a while (it took 45 minutes for our food to come out).
