Warning: there's a cat living in the restaurant. It's very dirty. There's cat hair everywhere – on the tables, on the chairs. The owner is nice, and the restroom is okay. But the cleanliness is very poor.

My wife and I looked for this place as we are both Van der Valk fans. We were definitely not disappointed in any way. The atmosphere and ambience was amazing, the food was better than excellent. If you get the chance to eat or drink here, don't miss the opportunity to do so.

A family run restaurant-pub, friendly service. The schnitzel, salad and frites were all excellent! Even the other customers said hi! It is featured in the British drama Van de Walk. We even ate at the table where they the case! Easy to find in a safe district. The cat, Antonio, was a draw as well.

We were in Amsterdam for 6 days for the Dutch GP, and loved this place so much, ate here twice. I am a simple man with simple tastes, but the Schnitzel was gorgeous, the apple cake was gorgeous. Friendly service, lovely building, friendly in-house cat. Superb.

For years, the place to read Het Parool with a Heineken and a Kornwijn! And a delicious toasted sandwich.... My top spot for decades, next to Café Welling.

We had dinner with a small group, which wasn't great. The drinks were good, though, and so were the ladies. A bit of a missed opportunity.

I was very shocked by this cafe. The reviews are so good, and then this happens. April 12th, around 12:30 pm. The server was extremely unfriendly. Maybe he was having a bad day? Okay, that happens, but taking it out on the guests is unacceptable. Orders weren't taken in writing, which meant the server had to ask twice what we had ordered. If the answer wasn't quick enough, as was the case with the guests next to us, the server simply said, "Okay, nothing?!" A couple who wanted to sit down and asked for the table to be cleaned before they sat were told, "Yes, you can sit down, and I'll clean it right away. Or do you think I'm stupid and won't clear the table?" The couple left, shocked. Next to us sat four elderly guests who didn't even finish their meals because they were served so rudely due to communication problems. As for the food: it was okay. I had a vegetable omelet, which was unseasoned and therefore very bland. My husband's omelet was delicious. Unfortunately, I felt very uncomfortable and would have preferred to leave as well. While the staff wasn't as unfriendly to us as they were to other guests—apart from slamming our cutlery down on the table—it was still incredibly unpleasant to see other people being spoken to like that for no reason. I wouldn't come back here.

Everything about this place is truly beautiful, as they call it themselves, an old-fashioned bar. Really fantastic, friendly staff with even better service, they are the best!

Cozy eatery. Had a delicious meal and drinks. Exudes old Amsterdam. Right from the moment you walk in. Friendly staff. Meets all your wishes if you want something a little different from what's on the menu. 👍 We sat at a table with journalists' names on it.

A good choice of beer and we just had a couple of excellent snacks; my wife had a tuna baguette and I had a roast beef baguette. Both substantial in size and very tasty. A great atmosphere - if you have watched the 'Van der Valk' British TV series, many episodes were partly filmed in here.

A historic café, all in wood. The interior is very beautiful and, of course, warm. A stove in the middle of the room helps to further warm the atmosphere. When we went, the guests were all Dutch, enjoying a nice beer and some snacks. I noticed meatballs and cheeses. We limited ourselves to beer. We tasted two Amstels, both fresh and pleasant. We were tempted to stop for a bite to eat, but we would have had to wait too long, so we regretfully left.

A wonderful discovery. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, and the steaks were cooked perfectly. Service was exceptional, particularly as there was a full house.

Old-fashioned Amsterdam atmosphere. The vibe of Amsterdam in the 60s and 70s. No Loetje, which is now a McDonald's money-making machine run by private equity firms. At Scheltema, it's real. Iconic. Support them by going there. And keep it that way.

This was the most delicious meal I had in Amsterdam. We had steak, a burger, and schnitzel. The salad and fries came with a generous portion, so we had a filling meal. They even had homemade mayonnaise. They started cooking the food right after we ordered, so we had a warm, juicy meal. The atmosphere was great, and the staff was friendly. If you're looking for local cuisine in a place with a local vibe, I recommend this restaurant.

A genuine old Amsterdam café, where conviviality reigns supreme!

Such a lovely family run place. We stopped by on NYE thinking that they'll tell us that we need a reservation. But we were offered a table instantly, all the staff are lovely nice people and we were amazed by the quality of the dishes and the speed of service. Would definitely be a regular if I were a resident of Amsterdam. Bonus points for the cat 😺

A place with a great English pub atmosphere.

A must-go, cozy, homy, yet very elegant restaurant. The food was great as well! We had the Angus Steak and the Veal Liver, both were done perfectly. Their house mayo is a 10/10, elevated the already crispy and super fresh fries. Ordered their homemade gluhwein too, delicious. Owners are super nice, specially mr cat.♥️

Our first stop on every trip . Cosy, friendly and steeped in history ( and if a TV buff , the setting for the new Van Der Valk's " unofficial " office ). Highly recommend the Schnitzel !

Small bar. The food is delicious. The meatball and Dutch sausage sandwich were especially delicious. And of course, I recommend the Tropist beer (on tap!!! – a rarity these days). Very friendly service.

Revisited this bar exactly one year after I had been there last, went there 3 times this holiday and nothing had changed, it was still as amazing, same great staff etc. and got to see the kitty from Another Forever again.

A great place to enjoy a cozy coffee in bustling Amsterdam, complete with cake. The owner and his two employees are super friendly. And I've been in love with Jonathan – the 19-year-old cat – ever since.

Old school Dutch Cafe restaurant

A truly authentic atmosphere, with love for the cat in his basket who enjoyed a glorious artistic life. We just popped in for a drink.

we arrived at 11am and we entered because on google said it was opened starting from 10am and the guy who is working there started yelling saying “we closed the door because we are close, get out”. guess what? there were busy tables with people drinking coffee.

A quaint spot that we discovered by chance. We were a bit late for lunch, so it was very empty and pleasantly quiet. The service was super friendly and very attentive. The sandwiches were delicious. I'll be back next time.

Great experience! The onion soup was absolutely fantastic, rich, flavorful, and one of the best we’ve ever had. We ordered the steak, which is a house specialty. Although no one asked how we wanted it cooked, it still came out very tasty and well-prepared, with an incredible sauce that really made the dish stand out. We also tried a sandwich, which was solid and delicious. Perfect for a lighter lunch. With it, we had Amstel beer, nothing fancy, but a nice match for the meal. The biggest surprise was the apple pie. Warn, fragrant, with juicy apples and a perfectly crisp crust. A perfect way to end the meal. The service was great. Our waiter was friendly, efficient, and confident. The restaurant has the feel of a classic place with tradition and quality at its core. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a good meal in the center of Amsterdam without unnecessary fuss.

We went there for lunch, ordered the salmon and the steak. EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE!!! The prices are arbitrary; there are things that aren't listed on the menu so they can charge you whatever they want. My steak was VERY HARD, almost inedible. Thank goodness my daughter's salmon was good, but the proportions were tiny. The 25cl mini bottles cost €4.50 each. €60, WHAT A JOKE!!! Please don't go there, save your money. They force you to pay in cash, for some reason. At least the waitress was nice.

The food was excellent and the service was charming. Adding to the charm was the restaurant’s 19-year-old resident cat, who slept gracefully like a seasoned host. The entire ambiance felt like a scene from another time—cozy, cultured, and quietly magical. Highly recommended for fans of the show, lovers of characterful spaces, and anyone who appreciates excellent cuisine served with a side of history.

Terrific experience with helpful proprietor. We had the croquet and meatball served on top of bread open faced. The room is dark and soulful. The only other people in the place were for older gentlemen playing cards in a corner table. Regulars for sure. Highly recommended.

Coffee, lunch, dinner..good, fast service and outside terrace on a nice street where a lot happens, in the heart of the city

Could not recommend this place more. The mayonnaise, made in-house, is so delicious I couldn’t forget it. And having come back, it’s even better than I remembered. I had steak, served with a lot of really nice fries (with the amazing mayo) and salad, and a carafe of red wine. Everything absolutely delicious. It’s also an old old place, 1900ish, with loads of history. The journalists used to hang out here and from what I see, the older ones still do. There are books and papers to read if you’re dining alone. The prices are great, staff are lovely and it’s far too quiet for touch a treasure.

Worst service I’ve ever received. Only takes cash but won’t tell you and then will get mad at you and tell you to use the card machine by yourself because “ you can do it yourself.”

Los hermosos muebles de madera y revestimientos eran muy acogedores. La comida era deliciosa, el servicio genial. Recomendaría encarecidamente una visita, incluso solo una bebida, y si eres fan de la serie de televisión Van Der Valk, realmente es una necesidad.

Wish I could tell you about the food here, but the proprietor had zero interest in offering a menu. (He was holding two in his hands, but dropped them off in a big stack instead of, you know, offering them to his guests.) Gave up and left after a few more minutes of inattention.

Beefsteak is awesome. Super nice employees! Back for round 2 Beef Steak Scheltema. Onions mushrooms and a slightly sweet gravy. Awesome cook to a slightly under medium. Beef steak: perfect medium with a more savory gravy. Fries: to die for with the house mayo (seasoned like a light ranch flavor) Salad with a varied list of extras like olives, cucumber, tomato, pickle and onion)

The cafe is nice and prices are in the right range for Amsterdam. We just had snacks on top of the beer, so I can’t comment on the lunch/dinner options, but both the bitterballen and the cheese fingers were good. Recommended.

This place is cult; some of the film footage for the "van der valk crime thriller" is shot there; it is the department's second office

We went here because we are Van De Valk fans at it was great.

First meal in Amsterdam and some of its typical dishes, croquette, sausage and bitterballen. In general, everything is very good, coming from a country where we give a lot of importance to gastronomy, it would undoubtedly be a restaurant that I would return to if I were here. In addition, the service is very attentive and friendly, oh and he speaks some Spanish! But without a doubt the dessert, the best apple pie I have eaten to date, that is not apple pie, it is pie apple. We loved it and it was a very good price for how big it was.
