Bad experience with the owner's service. Tap water wasn't available, the latte macchiato was a latte, and she wasn't willing to make something else, or she had no idea what that was. The pea soup was clearly canned. This place clearly caters to tourists. Such a shame! It's been different before.

What a cool restaurant! ☺️ Both inside and out. A really lovely and cozy atmosphere. We were at Smalltalk four years ago and had such fond memories of it, so we went back again today. The food was good and the staff were attentive and friendly.

Before entering, we informed the staff that we only wanted to have drinks.In addition to one drink per person, we also ordered meatballs. When the food arrived, the waiter refused to give us a fork and insisted that we eat with our fingers. This was handled in a disrespectful and dismissive manner.The experience made us feel uncomfortable and raises concerns about possible discrimination.

Very nice during Christmas season. We ate the food that was over form Christmas and it was delightful. The stafff was very kind and accommodating. Also it was nicely decorated for Christmas !

We ordered a delicious Christmas dinner. Ron and his team made it a real treat for us! The chicken and vegetable soup, the tenderloin, the vegetable dishes and salads, and the tiramisu were excellent! The chef who prepared it is a true chef! We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. In short, Smalltalk Eating House is highly recommended!

A traditional place, a variety of dishes, and excellent service.

We entered, intending to grab a quick cup of coffee, as the café/coffee shop next door was closed (which I assume is the same place after all). An international friendly showed us to our table. After a (fairly) long wait, we received the menu. It didn't have a flat white on it, so we asked the waitress (who, judging by the other reviews, turned out to be the owner) if they had one. With an eye roll and an arrogant tone, she said they did. So we ordered two. After a maximum of 20 minutes, we went to pay, and she suddenly, with a change of heart, politely thanked us. It turned out we paid €6.10 each for a flat white! I didn't like it personally, but my friend did. But judging by the other reviews, it turns out the owner doesn't appreciate people who "just" order a drink. Not surprising, though, when the coffee shop next door is closed and refers you to this one (with the same name). After all, it was very quiet. Never again, and for outrageously high prices. I don't wish it on them anyway...

The food is nothing special, and the service and welcome are disastrous. My partner's very poor English earned him an unpleasant remark from the waitress about how the French don't make any effort! We can just imagine them complaining and criticizing the customers amongst themselves! If you have a choice, avoid this place.

I got food poisoning from the French Onion Soup and have thrown up multiple times today. 0/5 stars: I would not recommend. Also, our waiter became very rude and prissy when we asked for to-go boxes. But that’s because it took them 25 mins to bring our food out (they weren’t packed either).

Decent food options on the menu, typical pricing Ive seen so far around (expensive). Great pancake nonetheless, best Ive had in Amsterdam so far and wholesome service in a great location

A café opposite the Stedelijk. I seem to remember it being there back in the 90s, and not much has changed. The building itself is lovely, with its beautiful clock on the front. It's like a little trip back to old Amsterdam, and somehow timeless. You should definitely go there!

Had a chicken satay sandwich and omelet. Simple, yet nutritious. Reasonable price, quick service. No frills.

The baguette with tuna salad spread is another highlight: fresh, flavourful, and surprisingly satisfying for such a small place. A quick note about the ladies running the counter—they may come across as a bit curt at first, but once you get used to their style, you realise they’re actually warm, hardworking, and genuinely kind. It’s part of the charm that makes Small Talk feel authentic rather than polished or pretentious. If you’re in the area, it’s definitely worth dropping by for a simple but solid coffee experience.

One of the few autentiek café’ in Amsterdam,Professional and plesent service, price under the everage restaurants in the city. I come hier since two years, feels like home.

We visit the bar area first and later had dinner in the restaurant, both was a happy event in a cold and rainy Amsterdam. Excellent service 👍

While the food is good, I think it's terrible that I don't receive the service I expect for what I'm paying for. I didn't go there for free; I paid for it. I expect to be treated like a paying customer. I found it racist.

I've never in my life been in a place with such terrible service. A vulgar old woman running the place treated all the customers terribly, tried to force us all to buy things, and said we were just warming the chairs (not just us, but everyone, except for one lady who came in with a Louis Vuitton bag). I told her straight up: "This job clearly isn't for you, so retire and go home, ma'am!" I've never in my life been in a place with such terrible service. An old, vulgar woman treated all the customers very badly. She wanted to force us all to eat and said we would warm the chairs (not just us, but all the customers, except for one lady who came in with a Louis Vuitton bag). I'll put it in her own lenguage so she understands: if you're old enough and don't feel like serving customers, retire and go home, ma'am… Jamás en mi vida había estado en un lugar con un servicio tan pésimo. It is common practice to have a fatal relationship with the clients, and therefore it is obligatory to consume a number of customers who are willing to pay their dues (no solo a nosotros, sino a todos, except that they are admitted to a bolso de Louis Vuitton). What an antisocial place! The food was inedible! The staff were anything but polite. Definitely not going back.

This restaurant is best avoided. The service was incredibly unfriendly and they wanted to get rid of our large group. The food was presented without any care. The pancake seemed to have been fried in the same oil as the fish from the day before and tasted absolutely terrible. There are much better breakfast places out there.

We went for brunch and had the breakfast combo ( Sandwich with ham and cheese, croissant with Jam or Nutella, orange juice and tea)and the Dutch pancakes with tea and a macchiato, and it was very delicious. The white stuff was very polite and the atmosphere was amazing.

Probably a bad breakfast option. Three Dutch pancakes, one straight burnt, one with all of two banana slices inside, and lackluster grocery store syrup. Not terribe, but recommendation: Avoid.

At a quarter to two, the four of us stopped by for a drink and maybe a bite to eat. "Sorry," was the reply, "it's lunchtime, so unfortunately." Welcome to Amsterdam, fine hospitality, NOT. So, never again Small Talk.

Smallish (cozy?) place with some sheltered patio seating in front. It has a small bar. The menue is on their website and is quite eclectic. Service was friendly and quick. Food was very good.

A charming, authentic lunch spot that's been around for over 40 years and where the oat milk elite hasn't yet made its entrance. The prices are also very reasonable.

Great breakfast and nice staff who tried to be accommodating but because there were so many people they were a bit stressed, forgot things and had to refrain from helping with certain services. The cafe looks small from the street, but once inside there are rooms waiting with possible seating. If it looks full from the outside there is probably still room.

I didn't like the idea of ​​separating the burger toppings and setting them aside at all. It just makes eating more difficult, as the customer has to assemble it themselves, which isn't practical at all. Bad idea. Reasonably fast service and friendly staff. Spacious place. Overall, we had a pretty good lunch, decent value for money.

Stopped by Small Talk on a rainy day in Amsterdam and it was just perfect 🌧️☕ The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, a great place to sit down, have a drink and enjoy some tasty bites while watching the rain outside. A lovely spot to relax and recharge in the middle of the city!

A really nice cafe/food spot near the museums with friendly staff. It also offered more budget choices such as a roll with some salad for around €5. The photo shows the Javanese chicken roll which was very delicious and came with a side salad. This one was a little more expensive around €7.25.

We waited 10 minutes and they didn't even ask us what we want to order. Then we went inside and thought maybe it was a self service thing so we went inside and we were told to sit outside. We even pointed them our table and waited for them to get our order for 30 MINUTES AND THEY DIDNT EVEN COME!! We left the place because we had to catch our flight. Terrible overall

A bit expensive. Also there were wasps everywhere so we didn’t finish our drinks, just paid and left.

High price compared to the quality of the food. Meat barely 5mm thick and way overcooked, it's not even worthy of the worst fast food restaurants for 9€ without fries (5€ extra), a white salad and tasteless like the tomato and lasagna swimming in oil. The only positive point is the local amber beer

The Apple Pie was truly tasty. Very soft and creamy, great taste of cinnamon and apples, well balanced. As a side to my coffee was a perfect fit to energize. Enjoy!

A Timeless Gem Near the Concertgebouw This charming spot has maintained the same high-quality food for over 25 years. For us, it is always a win-win: dinner here followed by a performance at the Concertgebouw. The food remains excellent, and according to my husband, their apple pie is simply unbeatable, whether Dutch or anywhere in Europe.

My lasagna was just spectacular! It fastly became my favorite one!

We arrived before 8 PM, even though the official opening hours say they’re open until 11 PM. I wanted to place an order, but they told me they were closing — meanwhile, people were still sitting and eating all around. Somehow I wasn’t allowed to order. I’m Dutch and was here with a foreign friend, and honestly, it felt racist. Never experienced such blatant discrimination before. Absolutely unacceptable and deeply disappointing.

The tenderloin tips are not tenderloin, the lettuce is dry and the fries are not even good. Still a nice place and affordable.

Food is okay, but the service old lady is very rude, plus even the whole place is very empty she still takes away your plate very fast and kicks you out.

I ordered the plain pancake for 10euro and it was one pancake which wasn’t that nice, and we also got kroodjes (traditional amsterdam bred rolls) which were extremely bland. We were pretty disappointed with this expensive breakfast. Coffee was also average - tasted watery.

A very well-located cafe. It has a unique decor and a terrace. We had scrambled eggs with toast and a side dish for breakfast.

Warmly welcomed. We came for a glass of wine, but ended up staying for dinner. The reason for this was the pleasant and friendly service. We chose the tenderloin and the entrecote. These were cooked well. The wine glasses were well filled and if you ask for a glass of water, that is no problem at all! All in all a nice experience before we walked to the Concertgebouw for the music of Fleetwood Mac.

The name suits the best for this place, went there for breakfast on a sunny morning, enjoyed outdoor seating and watching the hustle bustle of the street. They serve great coffee and omelette. Staff are friendly and receptive. The place gets full as soon as the kitchen starts at 915 in the morning.

Apple pie crust is not a crispy pie It tastes softer. The apple filling is very fragrant with cinnamon flavor The apple pieces are cut into smaller pieces but the amount is quite large The apples are with skin and taste sweet and not sour. The syrup is still a bit sticky and will pull the apple filling Be sure to add whipped cream! ! The portion is so big that I can't finish it after dinner in the afternoon It can be a meal 😂 The waiter's quick and sharp service is commendable 👍

Had a lovely lunch, for Amsterdam-Zuid the prices you pay here are really almost nothing. For example an extensive omelette plus 2 coffees and a sandwich is here not even €20. Nice place near 't Stedelijk.

Even in de zon op het terras gezeten na een bezoek aan van Gogh museum. Had een heerlijk gevulde uiensoep en de baguette was ok. Niets bijzonders maar ook niet meer verwacht. Vriendelijke en snelle bediening.

We had a delicious meal in this very attractive restaurant. Nice atmosphere, good fast service and a menu with nice tasty dishes. Even though the kitchen closed at 8 p.m., we still got a delicious dessert. This restaurant is highly recommended, close to the Rijksmuseum and very affordable.

Bad food, bad service. I received bread not toasted, I asked to have it toasted, and they brought it back after 5 minutes completely white, I guess it was in the toaster for less than a minute. The orange juice cost 4.65, and it was just 1 squeezed orange. The place was narrow, dirty, ugly, poor. Don't go there!

Dramatic treatment. While the waiter clearly indicates that there is plenty of room and that we can take a seat, a blonde lady behind the bar shouts that we cannot take a seat and simply sends us away. While there is room both outside and inside. “I don't need you here.” I've never experienced this before, completely in shock. You wouldn't want to be served in a place like that, would you? Focused on tourism and no manners at all. 1 star is too many.

Most rude service in Amsterdam. We don’t know how good or bad the food is because as we entered, we were told by the staff to not come in unless we want to have dinner, while there were empty tables, other people sitting only with coffee. It was only 6 PM.

Apr25 Delicious sandwich! Very friendly service and a great spot for people watching!! Sept 23: Delicious schnitzel. Really aimed at getting people out the door as quickly as possible. You feel it when your table is meant to become available again. That was truly a shame. I understand that money has to be made, but it could have been a little less. Furthermore, excellent food for a good price.

The service and the food was really excellent!! And even from the price perspective it was quite good! I did not have high expectations as it was in a very touristic area, but I was totally wrong!! Extremely recommended !

We had a small team dinner there. The food was not something I would pay that much for, and it wasn't something actually nice that I will go back for. If you want a simple plate of food, this is what you get. The dining is extremely tight and you sit on top of each other. It also was not very clean. This was sure a once off experience, and not s recommended restaurant from my side. Apart from that, we did not have a bad experience.
