This restaurant is located in a quaint area of Utrecht. The menu offers limited choices and small portions, while the prices are inappropriate and the quality of the ingredients is poor.

The staff was too small and unprofessional, which meant we had to wait a long time. The food was also quite disappointing for our group of five.

Normaal kijken we naar reviews en hadden we hier niet snel geboekt. Maar dochter leek het een leuke plek om te eten voor een concert. De bediening was prima. Aardig en niet rap, maar relaxt vlot en attent Het eten kwam ook redelijk snel en was prima. De ribs waren echt lekker, de loaded fries en rendang kroketten ook. Verwacht niks authentieks, gewoon prima hapjes om te delen. Cocktails ook lekker en even anders.

Yesterday, the five of us had a great evening at Spice Monkey. On the waiter’s recommendation, we chose several small bites to share. The ribs were wonderfully tender and well-seasoned, highly recommended. The loaded fries with rendang were a tasty and surprising combination, and the gyoza were just right: slightly crispy on the outside and full of flavour. Every dish was prepared with care and you could taste it. With our meal, we enjoyed a fresh smoothie with pineapple, strawberry and coconut, which gave a nice sweet twist. For those who wanted something stronger, the cocktails were a nice addition – well-mixed and not too heavy. To finish, we shared a selection of desserts, which made the evening complete. The spekkoek had those delicious layers and spicy flavours, the ice cream was creamy and full, and the Asian crème brûlée had a subtle twist that pleasantly surprised us. The service was friendly and attentive, which made the whole evening extra enjoyable. The decor is tasteful and inviting, and the relaxed atmosphere made us feel at ease right away. This restaurant is a great place to have a nice meal with friends or family and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere. We will definitely come back!

We had a lovely meal here last night with five people. Beautiful dishes to share. My personal favourites: Rendang Croquettes, Crispy Cauliflower, Spice Monkey Pork Ribs, the 0.0 cocktails and the friendly service. We will be back soon. ***** 5 stars *****

The food is delicious. The service is excellent. The dishes are prepared so that I can eat them despite my allergies and intolerances. They are very attentive, helpful, friendly, and accommodating.

A beautifully designed resto situated right by a canal in a calm part of Utrecht. Outdoor seating for those summer days, ideal for wine and chilling. The interior is cosy and vibrant. It's wheelchair accessible and the staff that host you, do so well at making you feel welcome. The menu is reasonably priced, I gave 4 star food as I prefer more options but that being said, they have enough options (including veggie and vegan). They do amazing cocktails and have a decent array of wines and beers. I'd recommend the Reisling. As for dessert, I'd encourage you try the Pandan Creme Brulee, with the pandan liquor. Its a beautiful blend. Patrick our host went above and beyond 🙏🏻

I have never eaten such unlovingly prepared food. The meagre portions were also of very poor quality. This was served in dishes that had scalding (not just ours). The service also left much to be desired. We had asked for sambal. We had to get it ourselves from other guests. When paying, we indicated that we had not received a dish (this had however been used). It was then said that this was gone and that other guests had not received it either (??). Final conclusion: worthless on all fronts.

Super delicious food, great staff. Highly recommended: drink "The Unusual Suspect," bao pulled pork, bao crispy shrimp, gyoza, and especially pandan creme brulee! We went there two evenings in a row :D

If you feel like paying too much money for small snacks, go to Spicey Monkey. You also get a bowl of rice and some kind of soup (does that have to be together? I wouldn't know). As a starter you get vegan (wow) prawn crackers. Drinks are of course way too expensive, but that doesn't bother you. There is only 1 person in charge. He doesn't have time to offer drinks. I read on the internet that a new tenant is being sought for this building. What a good idea because the current concept is dead and buried.

My 9-year-old son thought the Korean Fried Chicken was the tastiest ever (squid game chicken, according to him, because of Korea). We walked in Utrecht on Valentine's Eve, everything was full and we had not made a reservation (spontaneous action). This was our last chance near the parking garage. The restaurant was actually full, but we still got a table. Nice, casual atmosphere, delicious food for a good price. Our son asked if we can make a reservation now for next year's Valentine's Day. And there is still plenty we would have liked to taste. This all tasted delicious, our whole family was happy. Worth repeating

The restaurant is pleasantly decorated. The food was quite tasty, although not super flavorful. Vegetables were missing from the dishes, even if they were indicated on the menu. So I had to ask for that. We also got curry without rice, which we had to order again when the curry was already on the table. Although the staff is basically friendly, it seems as if they are very inexperienced in hospitality: I had to make so much effort to be seen and to be able to order, even though it was not busy at all in the restaurant (eye contact, standing up and walk towards them and they still walked past me as if I didn't exist), cutlery was not present and we got 3 different employees at the table, who didn't really seem to know who had already done what. I also asked for a drink that they didn't know if it was on the menu (lemonade... they serve cocktails so I think lemonade can be made). The employee asked if I wanted to order a soft drink, which they would have anyway (but she did not have a drinks menu that listed soft drinks), I indicated that my first choice was lemonade and my second choice was spa red. After waiting for a while (I think I had already been there 15 minutes and my table companion already had a drink), I finally received a spa red from another employee without any further feedback. The overall feeling of being a host/hostess was missing.

Total disappointment. The website said gado gado, but that turned out to be an old menu because there was almost nothing Indian left on the current 'snacks' menu. Asian Fusion with small snacks to share, for example. There is nothing wrong with that in itself. Couldn't choose from several dishes so the Chef Surprise thought of 3 courses for 35 euros. My table companion wanted everything Vega. I indicated several times that I would like something made from shrimp. But the waitress did not dare to do that, she doubted whether it would go well in the kitchen. Mind you, we were the first guests at 5:30 pm and the staff was plentiful. You would think that a bit of communication of my wishes should not be a problem. But no, she decided for us, it was better to both take vegetarian... Ok, after all, I was surprised. Starters, minuscule exactly 2 of everything, mainly gyōza-like with eggplant fillings. Small bowl of (chewy) prawn crackers. Well 1 molar was filled. Then let's get our hopes up for the 'main course'! We were hungry... It arrived, 1 oblong bowl for 2 people to share again. Counted down 4 skewers of rather raw tasteless eggplant as 'sateh'. Jackfruit overly Spicy. 1 small bowl of white rice. 1 bowl of green curry with eggplant again.... 35 euros for 1, total the cost of half an eggplant and some herbs. 2 molars filled. Still hungry. Now onto dessert. I had seen lava chocolate cake and pandan crème brulee on the menu, so that must be fine. It was again a measured 2 slices of ultra-thin bacon biscuit and 1 glass of pineapple to share. 35 euros for a growling stomach. I'll never come back here again. Staff is friendly but does not really listen and is not willing to go the extra mile. This is understandable when it is busy, but when you are the first guests. Incomprehensible. Really another unnecessary kill of once well-intentioned and filling Asian dishes. Strange twist indicated and vegetarian is an overdose of Aubergine at Spicy Monkey. Oh well, they are in a good location on the Oosterkade near Vaartse Rijn station, that is enough. It's all very unfortunate.

The food was cold. Sateh without sateh sauce, cold tasteless ribs, Rendang diluted with water, unclear spring rolls, a very long wait for the drinks and not delivered the 2nd time. Dirty plates. Terrible service. Food is thrown onto the table. Consumptions placed randomly. Sad situation here.

All in all an okay evening, but the service was completely out of control. Gave some stars because it was certainly not unwillingness and they are friendly. Most of the dishes were tasty although one of the dishes seemed undercooked.

Delicious food for little money (35 euros for a surprising and delicious surprise menu and full belly) and super friendly and attentive service!! Tip: if the weather is cool, don't sit at the table in front of the door, but somewhere around the corner or at the back of the store. Otherwise, maybe hang up a curtain, dear employees? I thought that a rating of (almost) 4 stars would be a good reference for a great restaurant, but unfortunately it was a bit disappointing. It took a very long time before we were served and the food was very bland and tasteless for "Spice" Monkey. When we were finally served the food/drinks, many mistakes were made; orders delivered to the other table, things forgotten, etc. The interior is quite nicely done and cozy, but you quickly forget that because of the service and quality of the food.

Went there for our last night in Utrecht and it didn't disappoint! Food was pricey but very and tasty. Drinks are nice and very creative. A fresh change from the classic cocktail menu. My favorite was everything with the Pandan liquor. Service very attentive and friendly. Our bill was brutal but was def worth it. Will come again the next time I visit Utrecht.

Räumlichkeiten etwas schummerig, aber sehr sauber und die Bedienung sehr angenehm und freundlich. Das Essen überaus schmackhaft zubereitet und mit guter Würze und Saucen. Leider dauert es manchmal etwas länger, bis Teile der Gesamtbestellung und vor allem die Getränke gebracht werden.

We combined this place together with the prison escape. But the food came late and there was not much food at all for our group. Not worth the money.

I never felt compelled to leave a review before but this was so bad that I just had to. We arrived at 18:30 and received the food at 19:40 while the restaurant was half empty. Some of the food was missing and even after we asked about it and still never arrived. The quality of the food was despicable ( a joke really ) and the portions ridiculously small. We left hungry and quite frankly disgusted. As a restaurant owner myself, I don’t understand how you can possibly deliver such a horrible experience and expect people to pay for it.

We were a group of 4 people at a not very busy time. We had to wait more than an hour for our food. Some things turned out to be missing, and even after asking several times, we never received the rest. And the dishes that were brought were inedible and the portions were far too small for that price.

Waited over an hour for the food, when it came portions were extremely tiny. Had no chance to order more food as cannot wait another hour. Some of the food was forgotten about in the order. Taste was rather bad. Not good in any way. Ate a piece of stale bread out of my friend’s backpack out of desperation.

Het restaurant ziet er uitnodigend uit. Sla het echter over als je goed vegetarisch Aziatisch wilt eten. We hadden een 3 gangen menu, maar de laatste gang heb ik niet afgewacht. De springrolls waren vooral niet gevuld met tempeh, overgoten met mayo en een saus om in te dippen ontbrak. De bloemkool smaakte waterig. De aubergine sate werd geserveerd met chilisaus uit een flesje. Terwijl juist een goede dip het hele gerecht had kunnen ophalen. Het jackfruit gerecht smaakte vooral naar tomaat en kende geen diepere smaken die zo kenmerkend zijn voor de Aziatische keuken.

My experience in this restaurant was unfortunately a disappointment, despite the beautiful interior and friendly service. The atmosphere was pleasant and the staff very attentive, but the food left much to be desired. My biggest disappointment was the chicken satay, which turned out to be completely raw when it arrived at the table. This is really unacceptable, especially for a dish where food safety is so crucial. I only took a small bite, hoping I won't get sick. If that does happen, I am considering contacting the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority. It was also remarkably quiet in the restaurant, which gave me some doubts upon entering. A quiet evening should provide the opportunity for extra attention to the quality of the food, but unfortunately the opposite turned out to be true. In short, a nice location with friendly staff, but the food was an absolute disappointment. I hope this was a one off mistake but I wouldn't return for a while. Nice decoration, friendly service and some surprising dishes (rendang croquettes!)

We hadden een social deal voor de Biltstraat gekocht en een reservering staan. Toen werden we gebeld dat ze niet open konden ivm personeelstekort. Of wij akkoord gingen om dan naar de Oosterkade te gaan. Prima deden we niet moeilijk over. We werden niet echt verwacht en moesten meermaals uitleggen hoe het in elkaar zat. Het voorgerecht was heerlijk. De mocktail show me the monkey was echt niet lekker. Overheersende limoen smaak en het blonde bier was gewoon pils volgens het opschrift van het flesje. Het hoofdgerecht was maar zo zo. De ribs waren lekker net als de atjar en de satesaus. De curry was waterig en had weinig smaak. De sate had duidelijk te lang op de gril gelegen. Was droog en niet erg smakelijk. Teleurstellend! Het toetje vinden we wel weer super lekker. Maar het duurde alles bij elkaar 2.5 uur voordat we klaar waren met eten. Veel te lang voordat we de eerste gang kregen en bijna een uur daarna pas het hoofdgerecht. We zijn maar zonder koffie weg gegaan het had lang genoeg geduurd. We hadden hier al eens eerder gegeten en toen waren we echt enthousiast. Maar daar zijn we nu wel van teruggekomen.

Servers seem confused all the time, don't understand the simplest questions, food is very boring, bland and uneventful, prices on the menu don't correspond with the actual prices so we ended up paying more than expected. Very expensive too for what you get. Would not recommend.

Today with my best friend's birthday everything was just drama. The Korean Burger was a limp bun with no real flavor. The fries were cold and the atmosphere was dead. I expected something more. In addition, it was someone's birthday and it was neatly reported, nothing was done with it. The passion and drive radiated like a 50-year-old locomotive... despite the reviews that are given. People seem to focus more on form than content (quality food). So the reviews really seem better than true to me. The average shawarma farmer has more quality than this place. Very sorry about this...

The food is truly delicious! I have been here several times and every time it is a treat. Allergies are taken into account. The service is also very hospitable.

The food was very tasty and the interior is also very beautiful! I don't come to this area (Vaartsche Rijn) very often, but what a nice location. The only thing I thought was a shame was that the service didn't come by that often. At one point we were quite thirsty. We also smelled a weed smell while eating, this probably came from the alley next to the restaurant and I can imagine that the restaurant employees have little influence on that. However, such an air is not very pleasant while eating.

Super cool place, helpful and knowledgable staff, amazing cocktails and really tasty food. Reasonably coeliac friendly - I was going to give 4 stars due to the lack of gluten free options - no starters (snacks) / steamed / rolls and only 1 dessert but the satay, ribs and and cocktails were SO good, it swayed me. Hopefully more options next time I visit. Highly recommended. Close to the Moxy hotel and Utrecht Vaartsche Rijn station - so 2 minutes from Utrecht Centraal.

Where do I start... About 2 weeks ago I walked in without having made a reservation in advance. I received a super friendly welcome and was able to join straight away. The service was superb. Nothing to complain about, friendly staff and I also received explanations about the dishes when I asked. The atmosphere was good. It's not a big restaurant or anything and that made it all much more fun. There is also not really a (large) terrace, if you want to sit outside to enjoy the food and the sun at the same time. The most important thing is the food. I had 2 dishes, the ribs and loaded fries with stew. I must say that the dishes I had represented the Spice Monkey name well. The stew for the fries was nicely seasoned. I could taste the different spices well. The seroendeng and extra peppers completed the dish completely. The portion size was good, presentation too. The ribs were well seasoned and tender. I understand that this is a personal thing, but when I see 'spicy' on the menu, I would like to taste it in the dish. Unfortunately, I didn't notice the spicy twist with the ribs. Fortunately, to deal with this well, they have a spice bar where you can get sambal to your heart's content. So I really made good use of that. Would I go back? Yes. There are a few more things on the menu that I would like to try.

Waar zal ik beginnen.... Een week of 2 geleden liep ik naar binnen zonder vooraf gereserveerd te hebben. Ik werd super vriendelijk ontvangen en kon meteen aanschuiven. De service was super. Niks om over te klagen, vriendelijk personeel en ik kreeg ook uitleg omtrent de gerechten, wanneer ik erom vroeg. De sfeer was goed. Het is niet een groot restaurant ofzo en dat maakte het juist allemaal veel leuker. Er is ook niet echt een ( groot) terras, mocht je buiten willen zitten om tegelijk van het eten en de zon te genieten. Het belangrijkste is toch het eten. Ik had 2 gerechten, de ribbetjes en loaded fries met stoofvlees. Hierbij moet ik zeggen dat de gerechten die ik had, de naam Spice Monkey wel goed vertegenwoordigden. Het stoofvlees voor de frietjes was lekker gekruid. Ik kon de verschillende kruiden goed proeven. De seroendeng en extra pepertjes maakten het gerecht helemaal af. De portie grootte was goed, presentatie ook. De ribbetjes met spicy twist waren ook goed op smaak en lekker mals. Ik snap dat dit persoonlijk is maar als ik 'spicy' op het menu zie staan, dan verwacht ik dit ook terug te proeven in het gerecht. Dat laatste was niet het geval. Gelukkig hebben ze om dit op te vangen een spice bar waar je naar hartelust sambal kunt gaan halen. Hier heb ik dus ook goed gebruik van gemaakt. Zou ik terug komen? Ja . Er staan nog een paar gerechten op het menu die ik graag nog wil proeven

Sfeer en Entourage erg leuk, muziek minder goed. Crew prima, leuke talentvolle jonge mensen. Eten -op uitzondering van rendag kroketjes en KFC- zéér sterk voor verbetering vatbaar. Cocktails eveneens erg onder de maat. Dus nog een flinke slag te maken, maar potentie is goed. Verbeter het eten en maak kwaliteit cocktails, dan wordt het zeker een hit. Succes!!

The restaurant has a very attractive interior. The staff is very friendly. The food is beautifully garnished. Unfortunately, the organization could be arranged more tightly. Ordering via a QR code feels less personal. It also took a long time before the dishes were served. My friend got his burger fifteen minutes earlier than my order. That does detract from having a nice meal together. The desserts were a disappointment..... The crème brulee did not have the browned sugar coating. In addition, the description of the "Malaysian mess" on the menu was not what I got on the table. It should be a pineapple compote with coconut cream, pieces of meringue and lemongrass. I received a glass filled with the contents of a can of pineapple in juice with a little bit of coconut cream. That's it... and for €8! Unfortunately this gives me 2 stars.

When you enter it all looks very nice, but you are not helped right away, we were stumbling around and after walking around asking questions, someone behind the bar asked what they could help us with. Lovely people who work there, but everything could be better. I had questions about the social deal with the menu and they could hardly answer them. For the rest we had a pleasant evening.

Nice restaurant wrt ambiance and staff. Presentation is nice. Food itself is average - flavour combination should be improved, and the food prep should be improved. I.e. the rice was overcooked.

Fantastic cocktails and the sauce bar is an absolute winner! Food was good but when added with lots of sambar from the sauce bar, it really goes up a few levels, will be back.

Good food which was priced very well. Good service too! Vibe was quite quiet. Maybe that’s because it was a Sunday though.
