Sukhothai Thanee in De Weteringschans

I have been following the owners for years, since 2018 when they were still in the World of Foods in the Bijlmer. Delicious yellow curry with shrimp! Then they followed me to Amsterdam, where they had a lovely spot on Noorderstraat, near Vijzelsgracht. And now? Now in Bussum, and I had another delicious meal today. You won't find this anywhere else. I'll be making a reservation again soon.

Wow! The reception is, let me just say it... unusual. The gentleman seems very reserved, but he warms up quickly and turns out to be an incredibly sweet man. The food is magnificent. Just sharp enough and very diverse. It doesn't look like much on the plates, but there is more than enough. We will definitely be back here. A great addition to Bussum. A place run with love.

The best Thai food ever. Simply delicious, and also unique dishes that we have never eaten before. We had been there in Amsterdam as well. Very happy that they are expanding to Bussum; it is a bit of a drive from the Rotterdam area, but it is well worth it.

Incredibly delicious traditional Thai cuisine. A burst of flavors and an amazing culinary experience. Eddy and Pongvit are lovely and welcome you with warmth and smiles. The service is impeccable, and if you love Asian food, it's definitely worth the trip!

This Thai restaurant deserves to become one of the most popular in terms of Thai food and hospitality in het Gooi region. As a family of four we enjoyed a long lunch of seven dishes that had all the strength and taste expected of authentic Thai cuisine. The elegant decor and the friendly hospitality of co-owners Mr. Eddy and master chef Khun Pongvit made our visit a memorable occasion, just as much as the powerful spicy cuisine their kitchen serves. Definitely worth visiting to enjoy Thai food and hospitality at its best!

Everything we tried was delicious and freshly made. We especially loved the Tom Yum soup and the yellow curry, each dish was full of flavor and tasted authentic. The mango sticky rice was next level and easily one of the best we’ve had.

This restaurant moved from Amsterdam to Bussum a few months ago and is very highly rated - we came here for a meal with the family to see what their new place in Bussum was like - and it was amazing yet again! This is arguably the best Thai food you'll find in The Netherlands. You can practically order anything off the menu and be wowed by just how good it all tastes. The meal is well paced and service is excellent. The owners are incredibly polite and gracious! If you're looking to spoil yourselves with a meal... This is the place!

I would definitely recommend this restaurant for anyone who wants to really experience some thai flavors you wouldn't be able to try anywhere else in the netherlands.

What a fantastic experience at this restaurant on Herenstraat. Everything was taken care of down to the last detail, and the atmosphere was incredibly pleasant. The food was truly a feast for the eyes and the taste buds. I found the presentation on the banana leaves to be a particularly beautiful detail. It was clear that they work here with passion and fresh ingredients. We thoroughly enjoyed the carefully prepared dishes and the fine service. This is without a doubt a place we will return to soon for a wonderful evening out.

I remember this restaurant from World of Food in Bijlmer. Back then it was super good, and now that they are in Bussum and I have eaten there, I can say that nothing has changed. Super tasty food and super friendly staff.

What a wonderful experience! We ate delicious, authentic Thai food in a beautiful and atmospheric setting. Outside, the heat was unbearable, but inside it was wonderfully cool and comfortable. The staff is incredibly friendly, hospitable, and service-oriented, making you feel welcome immediately. The chairs are comfortable, the interior is stylish, and everything exudes warmth and coziness. The dishes truly taste like you are sitting at a table in someone's home in Thailand: pure, fresh, and prepared with love. Additionally, I ate several dishes I hadn't tasted before, which made it extra special. In short: if you love authentic Thai food and a cozy, hospitable atmosphere, you absolutely must visit here. A real asset to the Gooi region!

A great tradition of authentic Thai cuisine, with exquisite dishes that surprise us with their flavor from the first time we discover this restaurant, always faithful to traditional taste.

Of the two hours we spent at the restaurant, an hour and a half was spent waiting for our food. The service was incredibly slow. Even the waiter came to apologize for the delay, saying it was his first day (🤨). The food tasted good, but for the price, the portions were tiny, and you left hungry. It's very expensive; we paid 70 euros for three dishes and water. We definitely don't recommend it.

In short: out of a two-hour dinner, an hour and a half was spent waiting for food disguised as haute cuisine. My experience was very negative in terms of the wait. We ordered one appetizer and two main courses, and it took a whopping hour and a half to receive any food at all. The restaurant wasn't even full, by the way. As for the food, the flavor was good, but the prices were outrageously high for the portion size... you can't charge €70 for dinner between two people and then leave us hungry, desperately wanting to go to the McDonald's next door. I've attached a photo of the dessert at home, which, of course, I didn't order at the restaurant, because I imagined it would have forced us to wait another hour for it and would have cost €12 for a mango sticky rice with three pieces of mango... You can't claim to be haute cuisine and rip off diners like that, especially with such long wait times. We spent some time in silence staring at the empty plate, and I sincerely regret coming here. I don't recommend it.

I had read somewhere that this was ‘Thai fine dining’. As far as I’m concerned, that is only half true. The flavors are excellent and clearly have more depth than at an average Thai restaurant. In terms of portion size, however, there is little fine dining about it; they are generous (a big plus). Because the interior and decor are reminiscent of a fine dining restaurant, the misunderstanding is understandable. However, don’t let that stop you: you can simply enjoy delicious Thai food here in shorts and a T-shirt. The prices are slightly higher than at a regular Thai restaurant, but it is absolutely worth it.

Authentic Thai flavors with a modern twist. The pad thai was excellent, and the green curry had just the right amount of spiciness. Service was extremely friendly and attentive. The only downside: it was a bit noisy on Friday night, but that is also part of the lively atmosphere.

Perhaps even better than in Thailand itself. Top-notch food and service.

Amazing place! It’s hard to find a high cuisine Thai restaurant in the Netherlands but this place is a gem!

Perfect evening. Great flavors. A true experience.

We were 2 adults and 1 child 11 years old. The visit was a disaster. We arrived at 19:57 appx. We were seated after a few minutes. We have ordered the food and asked the waiter that if the child's food is ready then please serve it. We waited until 20:57 (appx 1 hour) before the first starter from the shef was served. Not our starter but shef's starter, apologizing for the delay. The child's food still has not arrived (she doesn't eat the starter food). Then after 5 minutes came the first starfer we have ordered. We have asked for the child food because she is hungry, it is already after 21:00 o'clock. We can't eat nothing and the child will be looking at us! The adult waiter said: the child's food will be served after some other guests because they are before. We said: we can't start eating anything before the child. He said: we serve fine food here, we can't serve the child food with the starters, only after you finish them. This sentence broke all the rules of hospitality. European and Thai hospitality rules. Ancient rules where children come first. For the waiter it was better to have a hungry child after 1 hour of waiting than serving her food before the parents finish their starter. Unbelievable, shocking feeling. We didn't touch the starters but were forced to pay for them. We didn't want to ruin the dinner for the other guests so we decided to leave quietly. The child broke in tears the moment we left the place.

Fantastic food and great service

After a wonderful week in Amsterdam we decided to end with a celebratory dinner at Sukhothai Thanne. We enjoyed the Sukhothai Vega set menu and thoroughly enjoyed each course. The fried tofu with tamarin sauce was delicious. The famous Thai papaya salad took us right back to Thailand—excellent! We enjoyed the red curry with pumpkin, but the stir fried tofu, vegetables, and cashew nuts were the highlight of the main course. Every dish was a perfect blend of flavors and spice. We do our level best to eat vegan but I do think even this “vegetarian” set menu included oyster sauce. It might be worth inquiring if this is important to you. We ended with sweet mango, sticky rice with coconut glaze and fried mung beans, and coconut ice cream. We had a chance to speak with both owners: our head server and the chef. They were warm and delightful people who added to our dining experience. The food was exceptional and we cannot say enough good things about our visit. Thank you Sukhothai Thanee for such a memorable end to our journey.

My boyfriend and I had a really horrible experience here. Studying in Amsterdam’s conservatorium from NYC for four months, I was missing the amazing thai food scene back home. Unfortunately, Sukhothai only made me feel the loss of it more. As soon as we sat down, we ordered drinks and glanced over the menu. None of the entrees spoke to us, but the appetizers really appealed to our taste buds. I was also looking forward to trying their mango sticky rice! We were planning on ordering four appetizers and put our initial two choices in with our waiter when he came, assuring him that we would be ordering more later on. Our excitement grew as we could see and hear the kitchen preparing our orders- we were the only ones in the restaurant, and a pair that had come in after us actually ended up leaving upon looking at the menu. A few minutes passed when, who I assumed to be the manager, came and asked if we would be ordering entrees. We politely said no, but that we were ordering a handful of appetizers with dessert to follow, including more drinks. He said this was a fine dining restaurant and that they have a policy of a minimum of one entree per guest. I asked where this rule was written as I searched the menu. At the top of their “Sukhothai selection” it said in small lettering “at least one main dish each.” To me, this does not clearly state each guest must order an entree. This really caught my boyfriend and I off guard, so we tried to express to the manager we truly were not aware of this “rule”, but that we still wanted to continue dining here, and at least eat the appetizers we already ordered. The manager said if we did not order an entree, we could not dine there. I was absolutely stunned. I have had the pleasure of experiencing fine dining in Zanzibar, New Delhi, from New York to Rio de Janeiro, and I have never had such a tasteless encounter. Moreover, I have never been to a restaurant that proclaims to be fine dining and not have a dress code. Believe it or not, we had to literally leave all because we did not want to order an entree each. I personally feel that this manager had some sort of personal disposition towards us because of the way he treated us. I have worked in the service industry myself and cannot imagine ever speaking to customers the way he spoke to us. If it was about us spending a certain amount of money while dining there, that argument does not hold up because the total we would have spent on four drinks, four appetizers, and two desserts would have amounted to more than the both of us ordering two entrees. I would most certainly not recommend Sukhothai to anyone. I wish I could make this judgment based on the food, but it is solely because of the abhorrent behavior by the manager there.

The food is really good and this authentic Thai cuisine. We came for dinner and the room was almost full. Nice atmosphere and relax setting. Service is quite slow but this is something very usual in Amsterdam. Food was very spicy and this is something they did not tell beforehand. Overall great address but you can find similar Thai food quality in Amsterdam at a better price.

Wait staff is extremely extremely rude. They call themselves fine dining but beware. It is very very low grade food and service. Trying to force people into certain selections. Please check yelp reviews before your experience. You will see this is a common theme going back nearly 5 years. Definitely not fine dining when there is no dress code and your wait staff looks like they walked in off the street. Please do some research on what "fine dining" entails. Forcing people to buy dishes they do not want is the furthest from fine dining I have ever seen. Coming from an individual who has ate at numerous Michelin star restaurants across the globe, this is not "fine dining". Or whatever you are "trying" to calling this. If you are forcing patrons to eat certain meals it should be very well disclosed prior to my arrival not on the 5th page of your menu, as your wait staff very rudely took my menu from hands and forcibly pointed to the finely printed small words. $20 deposit because you know exactly what is going on... a good ole fashion scam. Seeing how the restaurant was completely empty and 2 tables got up and left I would surely reconsider your approach. Best of luck in the future.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Sukhothai Thanee in Amsterdam, and it was an unforgettable culinary experience! This fine dining Thai restaurant seamlessly blends authentic flavors with a sophisticated ambiance, making it a must-visit for anyone who appreciates exquisite cuisine. The menu was very unique and each dish was so authentic. The Ma-Hor, thai traditional dish, with its perfect balance of sweet and savory, was a wonderful start. The Miang-Kum offered an explosion of flavors in every bite, bringing me back to Thailand immediately. Todman, texture and taste, was also on point. Main dishes: Crispy fish flake salad was a star for me, you can definitely find this dish in almost every thai restaurant in Thailand but not abroad, and I was so excited when I saw it on the menu. The crispy flake fish goes well with the young mango salad and spicy sauce. The Stir-Fried Pork Neck with Ginger was also great. Shrimp Green Curry was great too, with the perfect level of heat and creamy coconut soup. However, the taste was really authentic so please check with staff if you can’t handle the spicyness😉. Mango sticky rice and deconstructed banana in coconut milk were perfect dessert to wrap everything up. The creamy sticky rice topped with the creamy coconut milk and sweet mango are always perfect combo and could never go wrong. The service was also great, and the staff were really nice. If you're in Amsterdam and looking for an extraordinary dining experience, Sukhothai Thani should be at the top of your list.

If you love thai food this is really on another level compared to other thai restaurants! I ate here on my birthday and I was extremely satisfied with not only the food but also the amazing service. A real gem that is, for now, quite hidden. The overall experience has been a 10/10 and I would strongly recommend other people to try!

To preface, this is an expensive restaurant—you’re spending at minimum €75 per person. With that price point comes a certain bar for food and service. Sadly it seems this restaurant has gone the way of a lot of great Amsterdam restaurants—start out with a bang to then decline into mediocrity, riding on reputation to keep up the pricing. Let’s first talk about the food. (1) papaya salad for 1st course—Simple right? This is a classic. Well as this claims it is super authentic, I was hoping they would actually do as in Thailand and mash the papaya. Sadly, it was shredded—typical shortcut papaya salad. Except it was €32. (2) mains—nothing to complain about, they were delicious but the portions were small. (3) dessert — very much so a disappointment. The mango sticky rice looks like NOTHING in the photos. The mango was a pale yellow, sour, with visible bruising. The sticky rice was fine, but again this is €13! I expect a perfect sweet, outrageously floral mango even if means you fly them in from the other side of the world at a ridiculous price. These were Albert Heijn quality mangoes. Service—nothing terrible, but I felt rushed. I even asked the waiter to please bring out the mains one by one so we can share. After agreeing, he totally ignored it and brought them all out at once. I really wanted to like this place…sadly this is at best slightly above average Thai food while charging Michelin star prices.

Waiter was incredibly aggressive. Don’t know what his issue was with us being two young girls (?) dining at the restaurant. But he made us feel extremely uncomfortable through his aggressive comments and tone of voice, sarcastic mimicking of us and the way he literally threw down the receipt on the table at the end of a very tragic dinner... We paid over 80€ to be made fun of, and made to feel uncomfortable. We were respectful customers … I suggest this waiter goes to therapy to sort out his anger issues but mostly his very obvious issues with women. <3 Food was good but unless you are into …. humiliation …. don’t come here…

A small entrance, discreetly furnished restaurant, friendly and very good, friendly and mindful service. As someone who has eaten a lot of Thai food in Thailand (North and South) and all over the world, I can confirm that the flavors and dishes are authentic. I would like to emphasize that the spiciness level is also authentic: if you are always Europeanized Thai food, you will learn here what spiciness is actually normal for Thai food. I loved it. I can recommend this restaurant to everyone and will be back again. Thank you for the good experience!

Good thai. We have ordered 2 classic menus, consisting of 2 starters, 3 mains with rice and a dessert. Each menu costs 62 euros. It is worth ordering the menu, you will be satisfied. Perhaps we have missed having the main dishes explained to us in the same way as the starters. The quality is good, I do recommend visiting the restaurant.

My friend and I had a great dining experience here. The menu had many interesting options, and the food we ended up ordering was very flavorful and well presented. The portion sizes were also good, leaving us satisfied but not overfull (and still with room for a very delicious mango sticky rice for dessert). I would definitely go here again to try some of the other menu options! The service was also very courteous, and the ambiance was pleasant and peaceful.

Mi marido y yo tropezamos con Sukhothai Thanee camino a nuestro hotel y fue un hallazgo estrella. No teníamos reserva y no nos pudieron sentar inicialmente, pero nos ofreció una mesa 45 minutos después, así que fuimos a tomar una copa a la vuelta de la esquina y volvimos. Y valió la pena esperar al 100%. La comida estaba muy deliciosa. . . Se sirve a un ritmo más lento de lo que estaríamos acostumbrados (porque creo que el único chef cocina todo desde cero) pero cada plato era delicioso y valía la pena la espera. No era barato 170 € para nosotros dos, pero eso incluía un entrante, principal, postre para cada uno de nosotros más dos bebidas cada uno y agua. Sin embargo, no nos importó pagar esa cantidad porque valió la pena. Definitivamente recomendaría si te gusta la auténtica comida tailandesa sabrosa.

Very pretentious place which aims to serve fine dining Thai, yet the food was just average and very overpriced. We got the 2 soups as a starter and then 2 mains of chicken/pork belly which were super spicy and so tiny (35€ each). service is very rude, the waiter was never accommodating and didn’t like us not speaking dutch. wouldn’t recommend. EDIT: The aggressive reply from the restaurant tells a lot about how they value customer feedback!

What a perfect Thai restaurant. I didn't realize we had such a fine Thai dining experience right under our noses here in Amsterdam. The curries here were fantastic, very silky, rich and really a wall of flavor explosions in your mouth. Such interesting dishes and friendly service. I will be returning to try more.

The meal that came for lunch that the tour brought was very delicious Thai food. Ever since I've eaten Thai food abroad. This shop is the most impressive. We had so much fun eating that we forgot to take pictures of the food.

Great services! Easy to go. I walked from Rijks museum. Their food is so authentic. Balanced flavor. (Not too salty not too sweet) . Their tomyum was very unique. I will recommend to anyone who love Thai food or wanna try Thai-local dish. Come here you would love this place.

The staff can’t help it but waiting 1 hour and 30 min for a main course is just disrespectful. I mean sure we did not order a starter and apparently they have a system in place where they first serve tables with staters. But they could have mentioned that the food would take at least an hour. The food itself was decent but nothing special and fairly overpriced. Yes it’s a nice place with pretty decoration. But please learn how to manage expectations of your guests.

I recently visited Sukhothai Thanee located in the center of Amsterdam, and it was a fantastic experience. While I have a soft spot for their Beef Stew in Massaman Curry, every dish, from the Crispy Sea Bass to the Grilled Ribeye in Panang Curry, burst with authentic Thai flavors that transported me back to Thailand. The Mango Sticky Rice for dessert was a sweet finale that perfectly complemented the savory dishes. The attentive and friendly staff enhanced the dining experience, and the chic and elegant interior added to the overall ambiance. In conclusion, Sukhothai Thanee is a hidden gem for those seeking fine dining with authentic Thai cuisine in Amsterdam. With each dish crafted with care and attention, it is a culinary journey you won't want to miss.

Ate here with the family for a birthday. Upon entering you were greeted by a doorbell in Thai. Very nice! Our coats were accepted and hung up. Very nicely decorated restaurant, not extremely large, but that provides extra ambiance. The tables were laid out very neatly. The chairs are comfortable, not your standard wooden catering chair. We had a pre-selected surprise menu. Starter 1: something tasty with dried shrimps served on a tray. 2: grilled chicken with a nice spicy sauce. 3: fish cakes. 4: papaya salad (spicy!) Main course 1: a whole sea bass fried with a fresh "salad/dressing" of mint, lemongrass, lime. 2: massam curry. 3: yellow curry with lobster. 4: chicken with cashews, bell pepper, onion (spicy!) For dessert: sticky rice with mango or a kind of warm green pudding with coconut milk and raspberry ice cream. The food was very tasty and very tasty. You could taste the freshness in every dish and the herbs were also recognizable. Delicious food. This is not an "average Thai". The service was also top notch. This was the first time but certainly not the last. Truly a hidden gem!!

Delicious meal beautifully served in a lovely room. It was my birthday the day before but due to Eurostar breaking down we were a day late in celebrating. The restaurant was so welcoming and even supplied a huge birthday candle ! A great place for our special occasion. Fine dining Thai cuisine

Special to eat here. Lots of flavors and surprising dishes. Nice and spicy. We had a very tasty meal. Also nice to chat with the chef. We also got homemade curry to take home. Compliments to the chef.

Tucked away little gem of a restaurant and so worth it. Coming from the Pacific Nw where delicious Thai food is abundant I was craving something spicy and this place did not disappoint. The waiters were both awesome and made me feel so welcomed. Food was exceptional, and very creative. Highly recommend!

Oh my God. I'm loving the atmosphere here. And the food are SUPERB. It's over the TOP. U GUYS SHOULD TRY THIS RESTAURANT when u are in Amsterdam! U won't regret it! Owners are really friendly and welcoming, ambience is COZY and really it's A MUST TRY restaurants. I'm out of words. Really deserve more Michelin awards in the years to come!
