DUTCH BELOW: A friend and I arrived at Surya yesterday shortly after opening time. We come here often and have never had a negative experience until now. Upon entering, a man with little to no hair on his head asked whether we had a reservation. We didn't. He told us there was no availability until 6:30 PM. The entire restaurant was empty, except for a few guests. We then walked outside, and I checked the website to see if there really was no availability. It felt to us as if he did not want to serve us. We were wearing headscarves. On the website, all time slots were available. I then made a reservation for 5:00 PM. We walked back inside, and he checked the system to see if we had a reservation. Suddenly, we were allowed in. I asked him why we had been refused earlier, and he said that his system showed the restaurant would be full (which was not visible at all). I showed him my phone so he could see that all time slots were indeed available. The man appeared nervous, started stuttering, and didn't seem to know how to react. He led us to our table and walked away. This really shocked me, and this is not the level of service we're normally used to at Surya. Very disappointing. The food was lovely, but one of our wines wasn't cold enough (and after giving it back it returned with a cold glass but the wine was still not cold enough) and the seats in the back were rather cold.

This was my first time going to an Indian restaurant and I really enjoyed it. I had the lamb momos as a starter, which tasted great and was really filling and then had butter chicken with garlic naan. The portions were big and everything looked and tasted really good! I would definitely come here again.

I've been coming to Surya for years, and we've made many of our friends addicted to it. The food is really good, and when we recently asked if the curry madras could be a bit spicier, they were happy to oblige. (We took it back to the kitchen and got it back exactly to our liking.) The butter chicken is and remains amazingly flavorful. You won't be able to recreate it like that at home. The service is always friendly, too. Go there!!

The food was delicious. A soup starter with garlic naan. The main course was butter chicken. Deliciously tender and generous portions. If I had to complain about anything, it would be that it was a bit too dark inside.

The food was delicious. Inside, it was dark and cozy. They had placed us right under the box, but when we asked if the music could be turned down, they happily accommodated us. The service was very friendly and welcoming throughout the evening. Everyone greeted us when we left. The food was so delicious that we had stomach aches halfway through our plate. There were plenty of vegetarian options. I had the dumplings with cheese and tomato sauce, which were very tender. The sauce was a bit spicy, but not too much. The naan was homemade and very thin and soft. My girlfriend had the vegetarian butter chicken, which tasted wonderfully sweet. However, the vegetarian chicken pieces were quite large and had a very strong flavor. Very satisfied with the evening.

A cozy restaurant with excellent food and good service. And flexibility with reservations. However, the tables are very close together, which reduces the feeling of privacy.

We had the shared menu and the food was absolutely delicious. The staff was super kind and attentive. We didn’t even have to ask to take the leftovers home, they offered right away to pack it up for us. The restaurant is also in a really cozy location. We’ll definitely be back!

Very sad to see standards drop. This used to be a 5 star place hands down a few years ago. I visited after a gap of 2 years or so, and I left disheartened. Food is now just ok.

We had a DELICIOUS meal! We sat on the terrace, it was lovely and the outdoor area was lovely and inviting. The interior looks beautiful too. The food was delicious and there was so much choice. We received a friendly welcome and the staff took great care of us. They explained all the dishes. I'll definitely be back!

I have had the pleasure of dining at Surya before. That was in Amsterdam at the time. Our visit to Utrecht was the first and certainly not the last time. The food was delicious, well-prepared and a tasteful compliment to Indian food.

Walked in on a Friday night without any preparation. This turned out to be a pleasant evening in a charming restaurant with friendly staff. We had a shared dinner for 2 and were pleasantly surprised with delicious food, something different and a taste sensation. All in all a good choice! I can definitely recommend this restaurant.

The best butter chicken I've ever eaten!

Recommended for neurodivergent people, nice and dark inside and there is a waterfall on the wall, very cute. Also many vegetarian and vegan options, very nice. Super friendly staff and the food was in front of us very quickly.

I have been eating here for years, the butter chicken remains my favorite! Definitely recommended!! Service also very attentive and fast! Only tip I can give is that they can do something about the seating arrangement perhaps? For the rest completely satisfied!

Great food. We were there on a Sunday afternoon, nice and quiet. But on a beautiful summer evening you can sit here wonderfully in the middle of the center of Utrecht you are good.

If you want to feel a Nepal experience this is not the right place. The food (dal bhat tarkari) was tasty, the quantity ok (but certainly not generous), the price on the high side. The restaurant is nicely decorated, comfortable, cozy - but does not remind me of Nepal at all. You do not feel a connection with the specific cuisine - it could have been an Italian restaurant. You do not encounter any Nepalese in the service, and everyone only spoke English. There was hardly any contact. After our plates were cleared we did not see the service (literally) anymore, while we were still sitting there for a long time. No question if we wanted anything else, dessert, coffee, more drinks...? In short; ok, but not special, and then especially the service and the atmosphere. Too bad!

An attractive tent in itself. Service was nice and very fast. But the food was average. Just tasted great, but lacked some depth and some pieces of meat were dry. Starter was also a lot of (fairly dry) chunks of meat with a standard sweet chili sauce. For authentic Indian I expect some more deep flavors. Portions were very generous.

Had a good meal at Surya. Service was friendly. I will definitely come back here again.

Really nice. Only minor criticism in that the bathroom hand dryer wasn’t working. Other than, damn good portions can’t lie.

Some of the best Indian food we have had. Delicious samosa, butter chicken and vegetable Korma. And Hendricks G&T with cucumber!

Excellent Indian and Nepalese food. A large selection of dishes. We had the lamb Momo Surya, the chicken Keema Mutter and the Balti chicken and all three were very tasty. The cheese naans were among the best we've tasted : not too crispy, very buttery. The staff was very nice, discreet and efficient. We had a fantastic evening. Thanks.

I was there on a Friday evening; almost all the tables were taken. But the service was still very fast. I had a very large portion of tandoori chicken tikka.

Super tasty food and great service. Due to my faith, I wanted to pray quickly and the staff was very helpful in finding a place where I could do it quickly. I normally never tip, but I liked the service and help so much that I did it here. Highly recommended 🩷

I would have given more stars if that were in any way possible. This Indian restaurant - a staple of Utrecht's diverse cuisine - offers the most delicious sweet, savory, mild and spcicy dishes. The quality of the food is always consistently top notch - we always order either a chicken korma or butter chicken, and a lamb vindaloo. I also had a great mocktail, and we finished with the best lava cake (recommended by the manager). Love this place.

Delicious food, very good service, well thought out so that the group could try a variety of dishes (not the standard multi-course menus).

Unfortunately it was very cold there, which made us feel uncomfortable. And the food we had chosen, which was not supposed to be spicy, was spicy afterwards. Like the lentil soup and the samosas. But the food was tasty and the employees really did their best.

Wow wow WOWWW! I think the best butter chicken I’ve ever had ✨ and the portions were just right! Felt full after the meal. Highly recommended Surya. Also lots of good vegan/vegetarian options. €22.50 pp with 2 curries, rice and momos for starter.

Would have given more than 3 stars if it were almost impossible for the disabled to enter let alone visit the toilet (steep stairs with only one handrail) Food was also good, ditto for service.

Delicious Indian food - curries, naan and starters and mango lassi, everything was great! But I want to talk about their service, which has always been amazing. My friend loves Surya and for his birthday I asked the staff if they could make a Jake's Special menu which had his usual order of onion bhaji, lamb rogan josh, peshwari naan and mango lassi. And they did it. Even yesterday I had to book a table for 11 people and it was kind of last minute, so I sent them an email and they're response was quick. We managed to get a table. The food yesterday was so good! Great place to introduce Indian food to people who haven't had it ever.

Friendly staff, although we made a reservation we were asked to find a table ourselves, and take a seat. I expected more flavour, sadly the food was a bit salty, these things happen and that also can be my luck during my visit. I hope my next visit will be better. I suggest putting a reservation sign on the table and taking the customers to their table, it's nice. Smakelijk eten 🥵

I love Surya! Cozy, elegant, and stylish with delicious food. I love their paneer tikka (starter) and butter chicken (main) together with some tasty naan. The cocktails are great too. Prices are fair, and the staff are friendly. Highly recommend!

Nicely decorated restaurant. It is a bit darker inside, but it has a cozy atmosphere. There was a light on the table that you could turn around to order, which was very handy. The food came quite quickly and was very tasty!

Unfortunately... the times we ate with you were wonderful. But yesterday was a bit of a dump...the chicken soup was cold...no egg in it...then the interval from starter to main course was really too long. ..although we had a great time, people who arrived much later than us were served earlier. And then the main course again, the same problem, not quite cold... of course everyone's taste in heat differs... but normally the pan in which it is served is nice and warm and the curries, even the fried shrimp, were cold. ..well cold cold...The delicious carlic bread...fat..🙈 we didn't have any more dessert because we didn't feel like waiting that long again! ..And we weren't really warmed up by the meal, nor by the flavors. Probably too busy or the cook sick or stress whatever, but just a shame because it was especially for my partner's birthday! And don't forget the trip to Zeeland, Utrecht...well we did that anyway,,well,, but just a shame! We didn't say anything but left out the tip and left a little early. The girl at the counter looked a bit disappointed. We also didn't feel like telling the whole story in English...so we packed up and left...again, a shame Surya Utrecht..!!

Very tasty food! The naan (garlic cheese) was really good. The main dishes such as the paneer were also delicious. Furthermore, it's a nice place to sit, the atmosphere is good! The only downside was that the paneer had a small black layer here and there. That was a minus. This can be prevented by asking while eating if everything is okay. Anyway, it was busy too. Furthermore, the service was certainly good.

Food and service were amazing. Food this is the closest Indian food I have found in Nederlands so far. The menu is limited but food taste is spot on. Spicy chicken wings - Has the typical kabab flavour you get in Bangalore. Butter chicken came with basmati rice and we add a naan to it. Drinks - Fruitage and Hefeweisen Cost - €40.25 Visited during the weekend, Saturday lunch to be precise. We made a reservation and would advise the same.

Service was good, personals were very kind, interested and helpful. Price's are avarage. Certainly try chicken momos. I ate butter chicken and lamb biryani. Both of them was delicious and big portion.

Food was very tasty, price-quality ratio also excellent! However, we did have to wait 45 minutes after entering before our drink was on the table (and because we were still chasing it ourselves), furthermore, we were not proactively asked if we needed anything else; Too bad, you could certainly have sold an extra bottle of wine.

No doubt the best Indian restaurant in Utrecht. We have visited Surya a few times and never a visit that we didn't like. Every dish is cooked to perfection. I think 'Samosa Chaat' is our fav also with the Mango Lassi & Lamb Biriyani. Friendly service and the yummiest food.

Food is really good! Compliments too the kitchen! The service not good. It took 45 minutes for someone to come to our table. We also got the wrong cocktail. What tasted like a smoothie. I told the waiter and she said it is supposed not to taste like alcohol?! She told me i could buy a shot with it. I pay 12.50 for a cocktail, first of al they gave the wrong one and second it was a very badly made cocktail. Its a pitty the service is so bad. The waiting time for me is too long there and the service poorly.

Nice place and good food, but it could have been served warmer. It was now lukewarm and when you chat for a while, it is cold. Furthermore, there were mainly English-speaking staff, which I understand in a way, but which I also think is a shame. They were quite fast!

Hard basmati rice Well I never have in my life Ate such hard rice. The side dishes were top notch. But that rice was just like brick. Of course I reported this immediately. But it took quite a long time before the new rice arrived. In the end I refused the rice and spoke to the person in charge, some Surinder. He apologized and we spoke to the chef together but that was too late. It was the first time that Suriya received such poor service. I have never had such bad rice in my life in the many (100+) Indian restaurants! The last time in this restaurant for me. I also immediately communicated this to those responsible. Too bad because it is a nice restaurant with good service, but there is room for improvement on some fronts. The last time Surinder! You screwed up and didn't solve nests! # One more star because that incompetent manager of yours didn't call me. Apparently he doesn't care. Rice is the basis for eating with the other dishes and that was not OK in total, hence 1 star. The service and hospitality of the staff was fine!

Worthless food. Not Nepalese or Indian food worthy. The (manager) is sitting with 10 friends on a table and is laughing and doing nothing with the complaints. What restaurant is this?

We had a three course menu. The food was very tasty and more than sufficient in quantity. When the weather is nice you can sit on the terrace.

Mind blowing lamb! So succulent, flavourful and fresh. Don’t miss the spicy chutney and the coconut ice cream. Loved the beer here.

Awesome! Delicious food and the lychee cocktail was superb. And strong, lol, that was a very nice date! Lamb Rogan Josh was delicious! And you keep eating that cheese naan, dangerously delicious.

It was my first time at this restaurant. The waiters were very friendly and ready to help. They gave us advice about the menu and came to ask if everything was going well. We both ordered a curry, it was very juicy and tasty, the portion looked small but it was instead the perfect amount of meat and sauce. Every plate came with a big portion of basmati rice and a salad. Fine price for the quality of the food and the location, in the very heart of the city and in a cozy square.

Nice ambience with indian beers. Would not be going there anymore though. They have huge posters of Indian separatist Bhindranwale in the restaurant. Will be taking my business somewhere else. I go to restaurant for Food if it was his personal belief I would still go to restaurant but someone who is openly making a political statement at the restaurant I would like to skip the ones I don’t agree to.
