Umami by Han Amsterdam in Vondelbuurt

We were staying nearby and went here for dinner on our last night. It was a beautiful experience — really cheerful, friendly service, incredible food and great atmosphere. The vegetable gyozas and orange chicken were stand outs for me!

Very friendly service and warm ambiance. Food was delectable and well-priced for the quality and presentation – we ended up ordering à la carte. I would highly recommend the Umami Duck, Ceviche Seabass, and Orange Duck. Would definitely return!

If you want to wait a long time, you should come and eat here…. We arrived at 7:00 PM and had to wait an hour for our apatizer, then we had to wait another hour for our starters. At this moment we are still waiting for our main courses and it is already 10:00 PM. The dishes aren't great either. Very stupid… sorry……

Good food, quick service, Lovely experience

We had booked our Christmas dinner there. The special menu for this was excellent, the restaurant was extremely cozy, the table was beautifully set, and the service was attentive and very friendly. We were also thrilled with the dishes and cuisine. Absolutely recommended, it's something special and the price/performance ratio fits the case.

Imagine going to the Van Gogh museum, getting a hankering for Ramen, looking up a nearby restaurant and landing on a Michelin star restaurant named Umami. Imagine the sheer shock of realizing, upon your arrival, that the ambience and decor are par none and the aromas are on point, with the price point being even MORE on point. We weren't very large party, so a lot of folks ordered a LOT of different things, but for myself and my husband, we ordered the gyoza, the shrimp buns, I ordered the seafood ramen, he ordered the salmon hot stone rice dish. Even my 7 month old appreciated the lobster broth in the ramen, and the drinks were absolutely amazing as well. The kitchen was open and we could look inside and it was super clean and orderly (albeit chaotic, which I loved!) and the service was excellent as well. This is NOT a place to miss, when you're in Amsterdam!

What a lovely experience the food was unbelievable and service was super welcoming!!! Also the atmosphere was so warm and comfortable I could have stayed all night. I loved the opportunity to order a pre set menu or individual menus as I am open to trying new things !! The food did not disappoint my tastebuds were in heaven!! I got to try 6 different items and they all were amazing!!

Food was good. However the inside was too niosy and they put us on a table close to kitchen (leave the restaurant if they sit you there) - all waiters are walking and shouting all the time close to the kitchen. It doesnt give you a find dining experience. I got dizzy becuase of people coming in and out of kitchen area, plus it is smelly -

The food was absolutely fantastic and really worth the money for such high quality and was a fantastic taste experience. The only thing I have to comment on is that it seemed like there was only one waiter there who really knew what he was talking about. The quality of the service was mixed depending on who came to one's table. I prefer to have one and the same waiter/waitress throughout the evening and do not change in between. But overall it was really exceptionally good, and also cheap for the high taste quality of the food.

We went here for dinner on a busy Saturday. Me and my boyfriend opted for the three course meal where we could pick and choose the dishes. First (cold) starters came just fine, quickly, and very delicious. Then it was ONE HOUR wait for the second course. At that point we were really hungry and were getting frustrated. Food was good but not worth waiting an hour for. Some of the dishes, like the fried prawns, were delicious but no different from any Chinese restaurant. Just smaller portions and made beautiful. the quail also wasn’t anything special. Waiting for the third course was anxiety inducing since we were not sure if it will arrive in 10 mins or another hour. That made it hard to focus on conversation and actually enjoying dinner. Good food but taking an hour long between courses is not acceptable, sorry

Google average rating not indicative, this establishment deserves 4.7 minimum. Very large, deep room, pretty furniture, lighting, cutlery... Affable service and then, and then: what an explosion of flavors! The BIB Gastronomic menu is a gift at this price! Each dish was an experience, superbly presented, an inventive combination of aromas, subtle sauces, crunchy petals, spices... Wow. I highly recommend. Really decent budget for this quality, well done!

The food was not of great quality. We had the social menu and every item was very average tasting. It was very disappointing, especially as we had a super good experience with Umami by Han in Rotterdam, where the ingredients were super fresh and the cooking was excellent. The staff could be more enthusiastic and passionate.

We were visiting from America and decided to try out this Michelin rated restaurant as we've never had a bad experience at one. Well there's a first time for everything I guess and this was ours. The service was beyond awful. We waited forever for someone to get our order. Then we waited forever for water, and no one refilled it until we were about to leave. We saw waitstaff just standing around but not helping us out. I guess that's why people in America give tips. The waitstaff here has no incentive to treat their customers with respect. Our waitress had the audacity to ask us in a very passive aggressive way if we spoke English, even though English is our first language. When I told her what she was doing, she got defensive. I would never go there again nor recommend it to anyone. The food was also not Michelin star worthy, which is probably why the last time they got that rating was a couple of years ago.

The food was great! We came to the restaurant as a group of 4 and ordered almost every dish. The portions are small, but with the sharing concept and 3 courses it is certainly enough. The service was nice and explained everything well.

Bueno, hay una primera vez para todo, supongo, y esta fue nuestra. El servicio era más que horrible. Esperábamos siempre que alguien recibiera nuestra orden. Entonces esperamos eternamente por agua, y nadie la rellenó hasta que estábamos a punto de irnos. Vimos camareros parados pero no ayudándonos. Supongo que por eso la gente en Estados Unidos da propinas. Los camareros no tienen incentivos para tratar a sus clientes con respeto. Nuestra camarera tuvo la osadía de preguntarnos de una manera agresiva muy pasiva si hablábamos inglés, a pesar de que el inglés es nuestro primer idioma. Cuando le dije lo que estaba haciendo, se puso a la defensiva. Nunca volvería a ir allí ni se lo recomendaría a nadie. La comida tampoco era digna de una estrella Michelin, probablemente por eso la última vez que obtuvieron esa calificación fue hace un par de años.

Decent food! A bit pricy compared to most asian restaurants, similarly priced to other asian fusion restaurants, but it matches the plating and surprising flavor combinations. The rendang was a bit of a letdown, however the other dishes were all satisfactory.

Umami have branched out into Japanese sandwiches for takeaway on Uber Eats. We have previously ordered the sandwiches and really enjoyed them. Today’s sandwiches were a joke… each ‘half ‘ of the sandwich was approximately 3cm in width as though they had ran out of bread. There was no smoked salmon in the Creamy Sando sandwich and the sandwich was so narrow that the two king prawns per half poked out the side of the sandwich. It was the same for Tori sandwich in which the chicken poked out. If you run out of bread, cancel the order, don’t cut a half sandwich in half and pretend that that is all you get for €11, yes you heard me correctly.. DO NOT order the sandwiches unless you are prepared to be disappointed.. Even more so for us as this was meant to be the comfort food for my wife (who is ill)

We have just spent a family evening in this restaurant, what a nice surprise for a sum of 40€ for the gourmet menu (without drinks), we were able to taste 6 different dishes absolutely delicious and perfectly presented. Lots of work on each dish. The service is very efficient, and the staff takes great care. We will come back with great pleasure. Well done to the whole team.

Positive; the service was just perfect Top! What nice people and hospitable The food... in itself a nice concept with small snacks and such. But the food was so bad. 10 courses and not 1 dish was above 6.5. 6 times a slice of radish or a slice of beetroot on the dish???? That was the creativity, otherwise it was just mediocre unfortunately Shame

This was one of the most flavorful Umami dishes I’ve ever had. My friend and I had the beef, but you could choose from chicken, pork, seafood, and more. Oh, so good!

Strange place. We (7 people) ordered the tasting menu of four courses totalling 8+ dishes (???). Way too much food in total, with all dishes having a bland and almost annoying character. Wine pairing was McDonald’s-level served but a guy who seemingly had no idea what he was doing. Why this place is in the Michelin Guide is beyond me. The whole place feels like a place for country bumpkins coming to the big city wanting to eat at a “fancy” restaurant.

Was here for the third time and probably won't come again. With a group of 5 people you are first expected to place the order for all rounds in one go, this then takes half an hour and then we were presented with a carousel of 30 dishes in 3 rounds in a period of 1.5 hours. It ended up being more gobbling than there was affection to enjoy the food and the experience. In addition, it is packed on Saturday evenings. Apparently the restaurant also thinks it is a good idea to play loud music on top of the crowds, making it difficult to have a conversation. The food itself was good, not all dishes equally tasty, but overwhelmingly positive. However, the poor service and the hasty concept gave me the feeling of having ended up in a food shack, which was not the experience I was looking for.

The food was good in flavour, but sadly we went home hungry. The portions were very small, if you shared your plate with 2 others then everyone got one bite and that was it. Sure you had a lot of different dishes, two a person per round (we also had the inbetween round), but it was like getting a taste and nothing else, some dishes were two bites and that was it. Last round came with a small bowl of rice, which was fine I guess, but you couldn't order anything extra. Desserts were a disappointment, I had the lychee coconut one which was one small scoop of coconut icecream and some soup-like dressing around it (the lychee but it might as well have been some molten icecream instead). They also overpoured the coctail I ordered, there was way too much rum in it and thus very strong flavoured of alcohol. The night started pretty good, but eventually more and more cracks started showing: the service was overwhelmed and it was hard getting the right person's attention, the person who introduced themselves at our table was too busy to attend to us and everyone else just hurriedly walked across which made us think they didn't want to help. We had to practically wave at people to ask for drinks or another bottle of water, the ones talking to one another right next to our table had their backs turned to avoid eye contact (out of sight out of mind). It was an okay evening, but I wouldn't go there a second time and def not if you want a quiet evening because the place is very loud. Lastly, it was obvious they were speeding up service to empty out tables. After ordering as a group we received our first round a mere 10-15 minutes or so after. We had only just gotten our first drinks at that point. After finished it would again only take 10-25 mins before the next round came. It all felt very hurried.

This was on all aspects so disappointing. We went for lunch. Service was really slow even though it was half empty. First the guy repeats the order wrong, then the wine takes for ever. The starter was dull and no flavor. Ramen was the worst I ever had (and believe me I traveled to Japan and I had a lot) the ramen had sliced olives in it 🤢 together with duck (too much fat and cut pieces with bone) Staff was not focused on service, wrong order again, forgot a wine, asked us 3 times if they can bring the bill and didn’t even greet us when we left. Waiter walks with skin tight tshirt, towel + dubro cleaning spray in his jeans belt… like really? The food gives u CONfusion instead of fusion.

We loved the variety of tasty dishes that were served from the 5-course menu. We are picky eaters and were pleasantly surprised that we liked every dish. The staff were quite friendly but service was a bit slow towards the end of the night. Nonetheless, we are looking forward to come back here to try the lunch menu. Overall, we had a very positive dining experience.

The service was sloppy, inattentive, fully bored-routine, uncoordinated and tired. We were not even asked for water, the wine pairing didn't come with the food or the food didn't come at all. We had to remind the waitress and waiters several times for the missing dishes or the missing wine. In the end we waited over an hour for the in-between and didn't get to the main dish at all, because time was already running too late. From the beginning on, we felt like a stress or chore for the staff. The food was okay at best. Not deserving for a Michelin-mention and very questionable recommendation.

Excellent Michelin Bib Gourmand menu.

Some very good dishes (mushrooms and the black cod) and some less (some of the fried things). Service was all right. Atmosphere was ok, but it was insanely hot inside (outside temperature was 23-25), so hot it made sitting inside uncomfortable, and I'm European, An American would probably die of the heat :D On Sunday you can park in front of the restaurant, which is nice too. 3*

The place is really nice and really clean, just a lovely spot to eat. We had a bao bun which is AMAZING, a salmon sandwich which was good and a vegetarian ramen bowl which wasnt that good, just missed some flavor and a chicken ramen which was very good, rich and flavorful The only reason I am giving three stares is because the waiters made the lunch a bit awkward and my partner was already seated 20 minutes before I arrived and didnt see a card until 15 minutes after having been seated and a male waiter gave a me a strange look a few times which just made me feel a little awkward. Food overall good but nothing outstanding, will come back to try more on the menu but for what we have had the bao bun and chicken ramen were definitely the best!!

We had one Bib gourmand selection and one social 3 course. Both were good but some of the dishes lacked that final touch that would have awarded them a 5/5 rating. The best dish we had was the scallop, which was cooked to perfection and accompanied with a perfectly balance and fresh assortment. Would for sure recommend to others to visit it is a very satisfying dinner experience and well with the ~60 EUR/person. Some small uplifts could have put it on my WOW-list, but alas it fell short 😊

Very popular with local Amsterdamers - always a good sign. Near our hotel and we called in on the off-chance of getting a table. Very busy so probably best to book. Delicious ramen.

This is a Western-style creative cuisine of Asian cuisine. Although chopsticks are used, the presentation is French-style and the price is slightly higher. They have a Michelin Bib Gourmand set menu of 3 or 4 courses, plus a 5-course option with dessert. Wild mushrooms, cod, butter chicken, and fried shrimp are delicious. Fried shrimp would be better if you help customers peel the shells. There is room for improvement in the freshness of the soft-shell crab, and the bean sprouts would be better if they were cooked. The salad was a bit too salty. The portions are not large, and each dish is presented in an exquisite style. The tahini sauce on the bread is very delicious. Many dishes are decorated with flower petals, but the petals are not delicious.

Vegetarian ramen is OK. Bao Bun is good.

The food here is fairly ambitious and has obviously attracted the attention of the Michelin reviewers. Everything is done competently and really there is nothing to complain about. However for my taste everything is just a little greyed out. There are hints of exciting flavour combinations but nothing “pops” at you. Nothing screams “fresh” or “taste me”. Not sure if it is the ingredients or just the local tastes. Having said that, it is well priced for the amount of effort going in to the food.

This place has a huge potential that is hidden by its inconsistency and terrible service. Many dishes come with a ‘Wow’ factor while some dishes are poorly executed with mistakes that are not expected not even from very cheap restaurants - like the deep-fried fish and deep fried chicken that is as oily as it can be. The service is slow (terribly slow) - we waited for more than one hour between cold and hot plates on top of a general slow service since the beginning - as one of the waitresses said - ‘you have to be patient’ (we were already waiting for more than 25 minutes to place our initial drinks order).

MY husband and I had lunch here after hearing it had received a Michelin bib gourmand. and it was excellent! We each ordered a ramen bowl, they were both delicious and the portions were great for cost. The service was great and our food came quickly.

The waiter was so rude, and apart from that he said he didnt serve outside while another guy told us we can sit outside. Would never go back. They act too highly of themselves and are not very welcoming. Unless you look like a Michelin food reviewer lol.

That young man is from China I ask him for something and he was all rude and he says I only have two hands I don't recommend anyone in this bag because the quality of food is also bad I don't understand how he changed definitely not worth it will never eat more in this restaurant

After reading so many good reviews and hearing so many good things about Umami by Han we decided to give it a try.... We were a group of 4 and without reservations we managed to be seated which made us so happy! But.... Upon arrival we were greeted by a lovely smiling girl that promptly took our group to our table, gave us some bar menus and brought us some water after a few minutes. As our meal progressed and the restaurant got busier and fuller we started noticing the rude and disrespectful way some staff members were treating eachother. From yelling from the kitchen area to the bar area, they were telling each other to walk faster and to "shut up" - in my opinion this is completely disrespectful as a person to be treated like this at work, and as a guest to be witnessing such behaviors in a "fine dining establishment" When it came to our food experience, the staff would come to our table to present the food in a way that felt fake and honestly uninterested upon us asking some questions regarding the food. The 3 course meal was extremely slow to be brought out and some dishes lacked in flavor and were only luke warm. The cocktails were the best part of our experience. I would suggest as well to buy better cutlery, as wood chopsticks feel like I'm eating take away in the street. If your work environment for your staff is so toxic and dangerous, you should be careful with the way you're treating people because most guests will see and feel the vibe as they walk in. I will not be coming back

This is DEFINETELY the BEST ramen that i ate in the entire world OMG

The menu itself looks great with a lot of choice but it’s quite obvious this restaurant goes for quantity above quality. We were two and had 12 dishes in total. Only the Sichuan Seabass and Chilli Iberico Ribs were worth it. All the other dishes were either not on the right temperature or simple missed flavour, but most of them both. Not finishing most dishes, even though the small size, says it all. How you can mess up shrimps and salmon is something I can’t get my head around. Furthermore, staff forgot to bring drinks multiple times. There were two lovely staff members though which was the only reason for leaving a tip. This place simply misses the passion and love to bring quality on the table. Matter of time before Michelin will drop this in their Bib Gourmand list.

I came here because of an instagram video I saw that made the restaurant look great, and because of the bib gourmand recommendation. The reality was mediocre at best. The temperature of the food was not right (mainly lukewarm), with either not enough flavour or not the right flavour, and generally very disappointing. I can’t believe this is included in the bib gourmand, makes me not trust this guide anymore either. Maybe it was good in the past but certainly not now. Service was mixed - our waiter was very good but others not very friendly and some things we ordered never arrived. Would not go back, sorry.

An expensive restaurant made for rich people with no taste. It should come as no suprise that the food is extremely bland, expensive and portions too small. You are better off going to the local cheap familiy run chinese restaurant which will be made with more love, and less €. Do not fall for the tricks of consumerism, love in food is found at the family run restaurants, not the elites. I mean this, there is not 1 dish we had that justified costing more than €2. It was that bad.

Overall the food was great, we enjoyed all of the dishes. The interior of the restaurant was also nice, with a fun atmosphere too. An unfortunate blemish on the experience, however, was a particular server. He was not rude specifically to us, but to other tables around us, and also to his colleagues (a memeber of our party bumped into another server who had been brought to tears by his behaviour).

Good quality food with an interesting twist. I liked all the dishes. The ambient is modern-asian. We had the 4 course menu for a group of people, €52 each.

There were a bunch of interesting fusion dishes to try here; but having no aircon at such a place is a no-go from me… but since our overall experience was good, i give it 4 stars

This place is the furthest thing from a michelin star restaurant. I’ve never been treated with more arrogance and disgrace than this all-racist team. We came in and were sat at the bar instead of inside. We asked if we could move inside and were told the place was fully booked. This typically wouldn’t be such a big problem, however, the seating was far away from any waiter’s view and we were left to wait 25 minutes to have our orders taken. Now onto the “all-racist” bit, this dumpster of a restaurant was NOT fully booked. When a white couple came in 2 minutes after us with no reservation, they let them inside. In fact, another white couple also came in 10 minutes after the first, again, with no reservation, and were also sat inside. We ended up booking a reservation online while waiting for any of the waiters to notice us and went to sit ourselves inside. After a 30 minute wait in total, we were finally allowed to order like the peasants we were made to feel. Honestly, less of a michelin star, more of a michelin tire quality restaurant. Don’t come here if you’re not white, or if you’re hungry. PS: they also messed up our order the first time, and our order took a total of 1 hour to arrive from the moment we stepped inside this trash can.

Can’t understand how this restaurant is recommended by Michelin guide. We ordered eight small dishes to share, and received eight really small dishes, but a couple of the dishes was something completely different from our order. Some overcooked, some more or less tasteless and one dish was inedible.

Unfortunately didn’t have a chance to try the food. Called in advance to know if they had an available table, they told me to come as they had plenty of seats. As we arrived, the waitress\host was quite unpleasant. As we arrived, we were placed at the lounge/entrance, next to the bar, with a loud speaker just above us, while our kid was sleeping… this was weird. My wife had asked if we could seat in another area, as this spot was clearly very disappointing, and the waitress gave a justification that made no sense. We grabbed the cheap plastic menus, which I was quite surprised given that they well mentioned in the Michelin app. At this point I realized they had a very nice dining area, which wasn’t nothing to the area we were seated. I believe we were seated here because we were with a child, which leaves me sad, since my kid is used to go to fine dining Michelin restaurants, better than this establishment. Being treated as a secondary client doesn’t feel right, as I like to eat well, enjoy and not be placed in a dark corner, in a cheap table with paper napkins, when you have an actual dinning area with an open kitchen, wine glasses and white table cloth. The waitress spoiled our lunch and we ended going to Momo, which the treatment was quite the opposite. Not considering them as a friendly place for children.

We went as a group and went for the 5 course sharing menu... There was so much delicious and beautiful food!! It was truly amazing. Would give 5 stars if the restaurant wasn't as hot as a sauna due to limited fans/aircon on a very hot day.

Amazing value for the lunch menu. Got to taste 8 great small plates between the 2 of us for 50€. I doubt you can find this quality price ratio anywhere in Amsterdam.

Amazing staff and smooth service. Food was unique and exciting, although some of the dishes were a little too simple in taste in my opinion. You'll definitely get through with the 3 course menu. The staff didn't seem to know too much about the wines, which was a little bit sad with a restaurant in this class. Overall very pleased with the experience. The kindness of the staff was a big part of that.

The decor and atmosphere are very good and the food is very tasty, but you usually have to eat more than 4 dishes to be full and it is quite expensive. The service is just good.

Had the Bib Gourmand 5 courses with wine pairing, excellent experience! Because I had already ordered a wine in advance that was actually part of a pairing with the second course, the service served a different wine. This kind of attention to detail distinguishes the wheat from the chaff, the service is very hospitable and has all the knowledge of what they are doing. to serve. In general, the food tasted excellent. The only point of criticism is the Soft Shell Crab, a very delicate product that is fried and comes with an overpowering sauce which is actually a waste of the product. This gives the food a 4 on a scale of 5, but it is actually a 9 on a scale of 10, which is unfortunately not possible on Google! Sat outside, unfortunately smoking was allowed on the terrace, I don't think it's that fresh while eating, hence a 4 for the atmosphere. Finally: for price quality you won't get better anywhere in the Netherlands, absolutely rightly awarded with the library gourmet!

The food was excellently presented and composed. Great quality and tasted superbly. Go for the social menu it will make you taste more dishes and a nice sharing experience. This is one of those restaurants that has almost Michelin star quality food but fails on staff and ambiance. The waiter was extremely loud so we got the food presented four times (also when presented to the tables next to ours), he also scolded and corrected another waiter in front of the guests very loudly. The physical set-up of furniture is like a canteen, hard tiles on the floor with chairs that creates loud noises when moved and the bare walls creates enormous echoing. Impossible to have a conversation in a normal tone. The price/food quality ratio is great, the food is excellent but staff and ambiance brings the overall score down.

Vi fejrede min datters graduation på denne restaurant, som vi havde fundet på nettet. Og vi blev ikke skuffet. Maden er tapasagtig, hvor man i vores tilfælde hver vælger 2 retter i hver af de 3 forskellige grupperinger. Maden var meget lækker bla. kammuslinger. Betjening var i top.

Quick takeaway: Don’t order the street food here. We tried the ramen, but it was more like a mediocre fish soup with overcooked salmon. The shredded smoked salmon in the poke felt cheap and fake. I’d recommend a quick trip to Hawaii for the chef for some inspiration—no offense intended. Maybe we made a mistake by not knowing about the need for reservations when we stopped by the first time, but given the uncool snobbery of the host at the bar, we just don’t feel like giving the actual dinner menu a try. There are so many other options in Amsterdam.

Very good food. But the service was messy and the staff seemed stressed. It took at least 30 minutes before we got a menu to look at. Hard to get in touch with the wait staff. No water on the table which seemed to be on every other table. The shining exception was the nice bartender who went out of his way to make sure we had a nice evening while we had a drink while waiting for our table.

The food was very good in general, but I felt that there was something missing for it to get a 5 star review. Most dishes we ordered didn’t conquer my palate, like the ceviche, which needed some extra acidity. Also, the service was a bit slow, although not too much. The atmosphere was quite nice. Overall, I recommend this restaurant for a nice meal, where you can try several dishes for an affordable price.

The food was delightful , tasty , but more of an eclectic mix of Asian flavors rather than Umami. Comes in a unique sharing portion concept which allows you to explore several flavours of within 1 meal. I appreciated that. Service was a total letdown though . First , I was served a bottle of large still water without my consent( opened before my eyes , poured into a cup), then I had to put up with the passive aggressive demeanour of the staff where they openly roll eyes at you when you ask for assistance more than once . Lastly , the wait in between the 2nd and 3rd course was sooo long ( close to an hour) that i lost whatever appetite and joy i had from the first 2 courses .

Umami offers delightful flavors but could use a bit more kick, coming across as overly palatable to accommodate Dutch tastes. Portions are small and not customized for the number of people, yet prices are high. The presentation is well done. Great taste, but not the best value.

Had dinner with my wife. We ate at A-Fusion Foods & Drinks a night earlier and it was money better spent, if you are not afraid of the crowds and prefer the taste of the proportions. If you are looking for more ambient dinner experiance then you might have a reason to choose Umami over A-Fusion. Also wine list is better here. I prefer the food over anything on my restaurant visit and that is why my choice is A-Fusion Foods & Drinks over Umami.

Incredible food. Interesting combinations of flavours. And extremely good value. Very highly recommended. Tempting to order too much and we did. But they were very happy to cancel one of our courses. And we still left with a doggy bag.
