I arrived after 11 PM on my last night in Amsterdam and was so disappointed to find out the kitchen had already closed. We had really wanted to try Surinamese food before leaving. But the staff were incredibly kind and accommodating and offered to give us one last meal. ❤️ And I’m SO glad they did! Everything was flavorful, comforting, and absolutely delicious. It was such a wonderful introduction to Surinamese cuisine and easily one of the most memorable meals of our trip. The kindness and hospitality alone deserve 5 stars, but the food absolutely does too. Thank you for going above and beyond for us and turning our last night in Amsterdam into such a special, unexpected travel memory. Highly, highly recommend Warung Spang Makandra! Amazing food and even more amazing people. ❤️

Rude staff who get annoyed even when you ask for clean cutlery, when you literally have dirty cutlery lying on the table. The quality of the food has also deteriorated significantly.

You can get affordable Surinamese food in a cozy setting. It is a real restaurant and you can enjoy a nice meal. However, it is often full, so making a reservation is recommended. I was there on a Sunday evening and it was completely full. Because of that, you sometimes have to wait a bit for your drinks or the roti plate with your roti, for example. The baka bana was tasty, the satay was fine, and the roti was also fine, but nothing special. Unfortunately, the cocktails advertised on the tables were unavailable and the dawet was sold out.

Ordered chicken nasi and chicken roti for takeout, but unfortunately they were very tasteless.

I had the Indonesian yellow rice with vegetables and tofu. But oh my... it was so bland. Hardly any flavor or spices. Also, the bowls were sparsely filled. The atmosphere and service, however, were very good.

A typical restaurant, very popular and very friendly. The dishes are excellent, varied, and reasonably priced for what they offer. Frequented by young and old, as well as celebrities.

The food is very tasty, but the portions seem a bit smaller than before. Still, the taste is just as good as it used to be. The sauces, in particular, are amazing; the spicy sauce is fantastic. We always eat here with great pleasure. I also find the prices very reasonable. Only the parking costs are a bit high, but it is worth coming for this food.

Bad experience! I had reserved by phone, but upon arrival, I wasn't on the list. We were still able to find a seat somewhere. The two small tables were terribly wobbly, impossible to sit at. So we went to sit somewhere else again. The music was way too loud, and the acoustics are poor, meaning you have to shout loudly to understand each other while eating. Not relaxing. The service is uninterested and unfriendly. None of the 4 different Surinamese drinks were available. I had ordered pom. Relatively a lot of white rice, but very little pom to be found. Such a shame! Surinamese Javanese cuisine is delicious, but this was a disappointment.

The food was delicious and the prices were good. My only complaint was that the staff, while taking a cigarette break, smoked near our table, and we could smell the smoke. Overall, I recommend it to anyone who wants to try exotic cuisine not available in Poland.

Very poor service. A smile or decent service is too much to ask of this team. The nasi is just as unimaginative as the owner sitting in the corner scrolling on his phone. The chicken was drier than a cracker and I am still looking for the satay sauce. God only knows why this place is full. We will never come here again. Bye.

Food was terrible, felt like everything was reheated in the microwave or deep fried a second time. Quite rude waiters as well.

Normally I don't like to write reviews, but we were quite disappointed with the service and food quality. The saoto soup was not served hot/warm, it was around room temperature. When we mentioned this and asked whether the soup can be reheated, the owner was visibly annoyed and telling us that this normal. And after waiting more than 15/20min, we asked whether our soup is ready, the waiter asked in the kitchen. The soup was finally reheated in the microwave, but all the crispy toppings were already soggy. And finally when I paid the bill I also noticed that they charged us an extra drink which we didn't order.... So all in all, too many things went wrong, and it was not a pleasant experience for us.

Reasonable prices and great food, warm service

The food was okay. Even though we had a reservation, we waited around 30 minutes to be seated. The restaurant was very busy, and we then waited another 30 minutes for a waiter to take our order. They were clearly understaffed, and as a result, the service was terrible. The waitstaff simply weren't able to notice customers or respond to requests in a timely manner.

I had the roti with chicken fillet. Portion size was huge. It has all sorts of veggies. First time eating Surinamese food I would say decent but the masala/spices could be cooked more. Sauces to add spice were good The resturant though was over stimulating on a mon afternoon for lunch. Boxes, crates all around, some drilling sound from next door? I felt it could be better managed

talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference, put it in a blender, eat it, then eat it again, it never gets old. All those tourists complaining about service should try KFC. The waiters are wonderful.

Last weekend we went to this place together with a friend who came to visit Amsterdam. We got a table for three without reservation, sat down, took a while before we could order, but it was pretty busy. So far, so good. After we got our drinks, the tv behind us started playing very loudly. The World Cup final was on, but the owner decided to turn the tv on 30minutes before the match started. We asked kindly if he could at least turn down the volume because we couldn’t have a conversation anymore. The owner gave me a pretty rude ‘NO’ and told us ‘everyone wanted to watch this’ and if we didn’t like it, we could go and find another restaurant. A lot of people left right after the tv started playing loudly, so clearly the other guests also weren’t amused. The food was pretty decent, but the arrogant and inappropriate way the owner treaded us, is a reason to never visit this place again. The waiters did apologise for the way their boss acted.

A legendary restaurant. Just trust us and come.

This was our second time trying Surinamese food, having eaten at New Albina nearby on a previous visit. Spang Makandra is the more formal sit-down version of the same culinary tradition, and the food earns that setting. We ordered the Nasi Rames, the Javanese Rames, and the deep-fried telo with peanut sauce. The Rames plates arrived loaded: rendang, fried noodles, cabbage, cucumber, red onion, krupuk, the kind of plate where everything is doing something and nothing feels like filler. The telo, cassava fried until golden and served with peanut sauce, is the thing to order as a starter. Simple and exactly right. Surinamese-Javanese cuisine carries the whole layered history of Dutch colonialism on the plate, Indonesian flavours transplanted to South America and then carried back to Amsterdam. Spang Makandra does it well. One honest note: the tables are packed in tight. The restaurant is clearly trying to seat as many people as possible, which is understandable but means you're dining closer to your neighbours than is comfortable. Worth knowing before you go, and worth going anyway.

The experience was phenomenal, one of the best things I’ve ever eaten!

I've been several times with group sizes small to big and the food is always amazing and the service is extremely welcoming and accommodating.

First time having a more formal Surinamese food experience and it was great! Lots of vegetarian options which is always nice to see. The dishes were not spicy at all but they had a selection of 3 sauces on the table to add. Didn’t document the bara and fried banana starters we got but that was my favourite part! Cocktails were also nice. The staff were also kind and welcoming.

The food tastes like a salt bomb.

Terrible customer service! Today, first of all, we were given too little cutlery by one of the employees. Fortunately, another employee noticed this and brought cutlery for the rest of us. After that, part of our group ordered sandwiches, and it took about fifteen minutes before we were told they had run out of sandwiches due to the Keti Koti celebration. We then ordered something else, but mine took so long that the rest were already finished, so I asked if they could pack it up so I could eat it at the office. The plate was brought to the table and I was told that I had to put it in the plastic bin myself for ‘hygiene’ reasons. When I said that I hadn't even touched the plate, she started practically throwing the plastic bin around with an irritated expression and left it at the checkout without a bag or cutlery. I never want to come back here again.

It is a popular restaurant. The portion is large. The taste is a little bit disappointing. It is okay but not as good as I expected.

I went here with a few people to celebrate a small occasion. Someone had seen good reviews about this restaurant, so we came all the way from Utrecht, because we feel that Utrecht doesn't have any good Surinamese restaurants. For me, this was the worst place I have ever eaten "Surinamese" food (as far as I can remember). I eat Surinamese food regularly and am actually quite easygoing when it comes to that, but I really didn't think this was good. The prices were reasonable, although I found the portions to be on the small side. The plates were hot, which was nice. The Fernandes was nice and cold and they also had orange Fernandes, which I liked (some places don't have those). The pickled cucumber tasted very watered down, as if too little vinegar or too much water had been used (or perhaps it hadn't been given time to soak in). That isn't very important in itself, but good pickled cucumber or red onions really complete a Surinamese meal for me. I had the mixed meat with nasi. The nasi didn't taste the way I'm used to. There was something in it that made the taste different. Perhaps the restaurant deliberately wanted to try something new, but it wasn't my thing. Additionally, the nasi basically consisted only of rice, without many additions. It was also quite dry, although fortunately the surwa made it a bit better. The chicken fashong and the lamb were the biggest disappointments for me. They were both very dry, and the fashong didn't taste good. Personally, I wouldn't call it fashong. The casripo chicken was also on the dry side. The taste was decent, but I expected more from a restaurant. The music was quite loud, but I think that was a deliberate choice. It wasn't disruptive. I did like the decor, though there were items lying under the benches like containers and bottles of Fernandes, which looked a bit messy. Personally, I didn't think the food felt Surinamese. If I hadn't known the name of the restaurant, I might as well have thought it was an Indonesian restaurant. I actually found Fernandes to be the most Surinamese. The people who worked there were friendly, and there was also a bar. I wouldn't come back here again myself.

Heard from friends that this restaurant is great, and when it comes to the atmosphere and service it is, but unfortunately the food was far from it. The rice was incredibly dry, the satesauce flat, and the rendang and tempé dry as well. I think either the food had been sitting out or was re-heated. The bara was nice, the food isnt expensive, but that's the only positive thing i can say about the menu. So so so unfortunate, was hoping for an amazing surinamese indonesian restaurant around the corner, but the food came short.

Rice is a bit too hard but mixed meat was fabulous. I love the chicken on the bone, super tender and juicy and amazing sauce.

Delicious Surinamese/Indonesian dishes in the coziest neighborhood of Amsterdam

Food: Our dishes were the Vegetarian Spang Makandra and Indo Rames. Both dishes were great. They both had loads of vegetable goodness and were seasoned very well. The fried plantain and bread are tasty. The sauces elevated all dishes. Service: Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and made great recommendations. Ambiance: Beautiful decorated, like you are in a tropical rainforest. Value: Prices were reasonable for the quality of food and service.

I have been a customer for almost 10 years and unfortunately you truly see the decline of the quality of the food. The food used to be much more flavorful and you received full portions. Now you barely get half a meal. We visited the place on a weekday this time, and several dishes were unavailable or sold out, as were several drinks. As a result, we had very limited choices, even though we arrived early in the afternoon. It is a shame that it is going downhill like this. A plus is that the food is served quickly and there are nice seating areas.

Hmm, what can I say? I enjoy eating out, but this was really disappointing. Old noodles that looked like they had been scraped together. I got a spring roll; it tasted spoiled. I took two bites and left it. I ordered telo, but had to find out myself that it was sold out. It's not what it used to be.

Sauto soup lukewarm/cold. The soup is piled high with French fries and chips, which ruins the taste. The rice that accompanies the soup was also cold. Large and small Sauto are listed on the menu, but the bowl you get for small and large is exactly the same, though the price is, of course, different. Small portions of food for the amounts you pay. The price-quality ratio leaves much to be desired. The meals are served with small bowls of sauce that are placed on your plate alongside the food. Staff uninterested and unfriendly.

Food is bad when compared to other surinamese restaurants. Male server was rude and inpatient when asked about potential allergies in food. Would not recommend anyone here. Go somewhere else.

The food was really good and nice and spicy. Now I can't walk anymore, I ate too much. But it was too delicious.

Disappointing, unfortunately more of a Surinamese concept than a Surinamese restaurant. Bakabana was unripe and hard, the “peanut sauce” was just bland satay sauce. Pitjel was sour somehow? The nasi was dry and lacked flavor. Rotiplaat was tasty, though, but the potato should at least have been cut into pieces instead of one big piece. The service was fine, nice waitress :) Drinks arrived later than the food, but she resolved that quickly!

Went to eat there again after many years. The saoto soup was way too salty and seemed like a Maggie stock cube had been dissolved in water; the chips were so soft. The baka bana was dripping with grease and the peanut sauce was sour. Such a shame. Never again. Severely disappointed. I also told them the food wasn't good and left almost everything untouched.

The food is great and a lovely place, however we had problems ordering drinks, nothing we asked for was available and waitressess kept coming back offering things that they did not have either. But the big problem was a barrel of vegetable oil stored under our seats (which we did not know) that started leaking while we were dinning. It left a puddle of oil and stained our clothes and shoes. We reported the problem, paid and left, but there was no sincere apologies or compensation to the issue, rather they pointed out it was our fault for putting our feet under the seat (!?), that they did not have this issue before. I would recommend the place for the food, def, but the service really makes me doubt.

Best chicken satay I've ever had. Drinks come slow but food comes fast, packed and lots of people waiting to get in which speaks to the deliciousness of the food.

I've been coming since the old location; I've been to the new location three times now, and you had to pay for a glass of water... so you can't really just buy a bottle of mineral water. A nasty disappointment with a cocktail on the table and a full dinner. Apparently, the new location has changed the eatery atmosphere and Surinamese hospitality. It was the last time.

Food was awesome, lots of bold flavours. There was a que but we barely waited to get a table. Worked out to around €25 each with drinks so i would say its really good value for money

The atmosphere is nice, but the food is not. I asked for a recommendation and the chicken fillet with roti was recommended. The dish lacked flavor. There was hardly any chicken in it, only had big pieces of potato and a lot of green beans. I ate the roti with peanut sauce and green beans.

Great place to eat, generous portions, and excellent service from the dark-haired guy at the entrance 👏. Just a heads up that the sauces that come with the satay chicken are spicy.

Excellent food for affordable prices

The portions were quite generous, and the flavors were a bit strong, making it very appetizing. The meat skewers were delicious, especially the peanut sauce on top! The flowers in the vases on the tables were all wilted. If the restaurant could pay attention to replacing them, customers would have a more pleasant dining experience!

My first time eating Surinamese food was amazing! I had the Spang Makandra Special and love it. My favorite was the chicken satay. My wife had the chicken in soy sauce and my son had the chicken roti.

Service has really gone downhill; after taking our order, they came to ask what our order was 3 times. The starter had just been served and they brought the main course immediately! Drink glasses are completely warm and a lemon slice isn't possible with your soft drink, only with a cocktail 🤯🤯🤯 Portions were halved compared to 3 months ago! All in all, it's not what it used to be, what a shame!

They say it takes twenty minutes, but it takes 45 minutes for the food to be ready. There was only one person in the kitchen and five serving. The tjauw min is extremely salty, the mixed meat is burnt or spoiled, and the pitjel is one big sticky mess with a bitter aftertaste. It is so crowded, stuffy, and stuffy inside that we went outside to wait. We counted five people who came outside and shouted, "Oh, I need some fresh air!" Simply put: inedible, far too expensive—let alone the price-quality ratio—is too bad for words, so just don't go eat or order. Perhaps more kitchen staff could lead to a better result. Until then, we absolutely advise everyone against spending even one euro here.

We attended Spang Makandra while visiting Amsterdam, and we were excited for our dinner after hearing positive praise from a friend. After waiting for our food for an hour, we finally got our meals, but my fiance took a bite into his food and chipped his tooth on a small rock that was in his rice. We notified the manager, who handled the situation professionally and removed the meal from our bill, which was appreciated. However, this still resulted in a dentist appointment after our experience here. Unfortunately, I would not recommend this restaurant to a friend.

Went here because I read that there are vegan options in some of the other reviews but when we asked the waitress she didn’t know of any vegan options. In the end she asked the chef and they made the roti vegan but the taste was just okay.

I made a special trip there because I wanted to try Surinamese food. It was a great choice. I was impressed by the sophisticated plating and atmosphere, which were the most stylish of all the Surinamese restaurants I have visited so far. And the taste goes without saying.

Last Sunday, we had a lovely family dinner. We had to wait at the bar for a bit first, after which we were assigned a nice table. The food was fine, although we felt the flavors used to be a bit stronger and the dishes juicier. Unfortunately, the waitresses work with fixed tasks, meaning one cannot clear a plate from the table and another cannot take drink orders. That does not benefit the service. But the HIGHLIGHT OF THE EVENING! was MAX. What a great guy, who makes jokes and provides excellent service. He is proactive, keeps an overview, and really made our evening. And that's even though he's only been working there for 3 weeks 👌🏽

The dishes were mediocre, though there was a good vibe and a lot of activity in the tent... but Spangmakandra has gone downhill. I don't think the people preparing the food are Surinamese.

Spang Makandra had long been a household name in De Pijp, but the move to a larger space, just a few houses down the same street, was a really great decision. The food is just as fantastic as ever and still affordable, but now you are in a large restaurant instead of a small (also very atmospheric) eatery. The staff is super friendly, service is fast, and even if you have to wait in line outside because it is full inside, you are served quickly. My new favorite neighborhood restaurant!

Had an amazing dinner here with two friends. The food was absolutely excellent: a perfect blend of spice, sweetness, and tanginess in every dish. You can really tell that a lot of care goes into the flavors. What truly stood out was the hospitality. The owner made us feel like we were part of his family, which made the whole experience even more special. The service was warm, attentive, and genuine. We did have to wait about 15 minutes for a table, but it was completely worth it. For three people, the total came to around €50, which felt like great value for the quality we received. Definitely a place we’d come back to.

We walked in on a Monday evening about 7:00pm, there place was packed. Host went out of his way to seat a party of 3 with no reservation. We had Chicken Satay, Spring Rolls, Curry Shrimp, and Nasi Ramen. Surinam food is a cross between Jamaican and Indonesian cuisine. Very good flavors, some with a bit of heat. Delicious! Cold beer to put out the fire. $$$

An absolute can't miss! Incredible Surinamese food with excellent cook to the food, great flavors, such a unique cuisine with a blend of sian and carribean flavors. You can taste the citrus added tang and fruitiness to typically more spice heavy food. Great atmosphere. High energy. Good drinks. No reservation necessary and was seated quickly and efficiently. The staff were beyond friendly and helpful. Can't recommend enough!

We had a delicious meal, full of flavor, herbs, and spice. We hadn't reserved, but we were seated right away and were welcomed with a smile by the owner. The atmosphere was cozy, the music was great, and the decor was nice. My girlfriend had been there a while ago and said they've changed things up nicely, with more space now. The food was served quickly; the noodles were flavorful, and the soup was also flavorful and filling. The satay sauce was the best I've tasted in a long time. The chicken was tasty and tender. The drinks served are unique and nice and cold; I had a glass of Makoesha and my girlfriend had Dawet—a delightful experience. The service was very polite and helpful, rushing to the rescue when a fork was missing and some sambal/ketjap was also out. The owner walked around and had a friendly chat with the customers; there was a lot of laughter. Highly recommended if you like versatile, flavorful dishes and can handle a bit of spice.

The food was divine, and I'm not exaggerating. I've never eaten anything so delicious before. And the young team was very friendly and attentive.

A nice and popular Suriname restaurant in the middle of Amsterdam. It serves various authentic foods and beverages which reminds me of my home country-Indonesia. The satay was tender with nice sweet peanut sauce. The food portion were really big, that I think we can share for 2-3 people. The price is very reasonable.

Food and service was so amazing but was ruined when we were asked “can I take your photo?” which seemed normal as the restaurant was filled with Polaroid pictures of people having dinner. This then turned into a man demanding we pay him €5 for this photo he asked to take - maybe this is a usual tourist trap we are not accustomed with but really ruined our intimate dining experience at this restaurant as he became very aggravated and argumentative towards us while we were eating.

There's another exception (besides soccer): restaurants. I have a favorite restaurant in the world 🌍, and it's in Amsterdam 🇳🇱. I love it so much that for my b'day in 2020, my mom gave me a 🎟️ voucher for a meal there and my wife a voucher for ✈️ plane tickets to get there. 😍 Unfortunately, as you know because of the year I mentioned, that could not happen. 😭 And I never went back there until this year. At last! 🤩 It has changed a lot since my last visit, maybe 15 years ago. It's bigger now. It's fancier also. It was already a favorite of Ajax players' but it used to be more simple. Now it looks more like a 🍸 cocktail bar. But.. the menu hasn't changed. Or at least, what I used to love is still there. Spang Makandra is a restaurant specialised in 🇸🇷 Surinam cuisine. And I'm not a specialist in Surinam cuisine, as you can imagine. But that's not an issue because they offer a special combo of what's best in that cuisine. Well, I almost hope it's the best cause it's so good! 😅 OK, there's something missing in that plate: the plantain 🍌. But don't worry, I fixed that. That plantain is so, so amazing. 😋 The staff was as nice as usual and the price... Well, the first time I went there, I paid €10 for a full gargantuan meal (no wine, no dessert). This time I paid almost twice that price. But it was still worth it, and it's still affordable given nowadays standards. 👍 If I visited Spang Makandra for the first time today, would I think it's my favorite restaurant? If I'm honest, maybe not. But that's not the case: I've known this place for years, I always loved it and it remains, as of today, my favorite venue in the world. 👏 And I objectively believe it's a top-notch restaurant and a place you MUST visit when you're in Amsterdam. . . . The food is absolutely amazing, comes to your table a few seconds after you order and feeds your soul with all the flavours! The service was a bit cumbersome, but they made all that up with taste.

My go to Surinamese restaurant . One of the best in AMS

It would be great if the recipe and plate presentation were consistently consistent, but unfortunately, that doesn't happen consistently. That's disappointing. I agree with other reviews about the gentleman with the glasses; you can draw your own conclusions. Today I went again and ordered a Spang Makandra special. What was immediately noticeable: the plate wasn't entirely up to par with the Spang Makandra special. It contained at most one spoonful of nasi, which was completely covered with bami, making the plate appear full. At the same time, the plates around me were clearly different: deeper, neatly presented, and with whole prawn crackers, as usual. This difference was immediately noticeable. When I pointed this out to the man with the glasses, he said I'd already eaten some, but he immediately corrected himself. He said a plate of nasi would be brought later. Because this was taking some time, I mentioned it again to the Dutch waitress. She took the plate with her for assessment and returned with the same plate and a separate plate of nasi. Both the waitress and the owner had seen the plate beforehand. The situation can easily be verified, if desired, through internal documentation, including the camera footage from 7:45 PM, which shows that no bite had been taken before the report. The owner himself indicated that such a remark to a guest is inappropriate. The owner also indicated that new kitchen staff were being trained. This is understandable. At the same time, a busy period demands extra assurance of consistency and quality. An appropriate approach would have been to take the plate back, visually assess it with a colleague, recreate the dish according to the Spang Makandra special, and offer an apology. They indicated that they would "make it right," which I appreciate. However, that's not the intention. The point isn't to make it right afterward, but to systematically ensure quality and handling during busy periods, befitting a restaurant with years of demonstrable experience. The atmosphere is pleasant, but a clear long-term vision for customer retention is lacking. This is especially unfortunate, as I'm a regular customer. From that perspective, this experience feels like a clear no-go, not because it can't happen, but because this level of service needs to be better maintained at a business with this reputation.

Best food we had in Amsterdam. Very tasty and lovely service. We would come again if we had more time.

I was with Surinamese friends who didn't finish almost any of the dishes because they didn't like them. My saoto soup was bland, but a generous portion for the small version. The bara was dry and didn't have enough spinach (according to them). I loved the non-alcoholic coconut drink! I thought it was a cozy place, but I don't need to go back.
